I can’t remember if I ever posted my Zaoll Muse on this blog before, but this wig switch-up really saved the doll for me. Since I got her she had black hair and I named her Murphy back then and over time I just got really bored with the doll and didn’t know what to do with her (and wasn’t willing to sell her because I’ve always loved the Zaoll sculpts for ages).

Then one day I plopped my Angel Philia’s wig on my Muse and her character revived itself and she became Amelia. Her character has found a home within the Arcane and Mononoke series since then.

How to hybrid BJDs

Done tap-dancing. Here's a how-to.

Research, research, research. Looking at measurements offered by companies might be helpful, but it depends upon where they measure. Neck measurements might be at the neck opening, or they might be at the base of the neck, and frequently, the only way you find it is when you get the body, and crap - the head doesn't fit.

2. Plan for one of the parts (head or body) to be blushed or dyed to match the other. Generally, it's easier to get a lighter head and blush it to match the body. That's what Ducmon (popular face-up artist) does:

My first hybrid was actually a butter-yellow Angel of Dream body that I dyed using the dezombification serum, followed up by my very first body blushing.

2a. Invest in chalk pastels, acrylic and/or airbrush paints, and sealant. And when I say "invest," I don't mean go run out and spend $10 on a single pot of Pan Pastels. Don't get me wrong - Pan Pastels are amazing. Highly pigmented, deposit lots of color, and easy to use. However, plenty of face-up artists use cheap old chalk pastels. You'll just have to build color with layers.

2b. Yes, you can buy expensive artist-quality brushes, but know what else works just fine? Make-up and nail art brushes. In fact, nail art brushes - the kind you can buy in packs of 5 for a buck or 2 at the dollar store - are the best brushes for those super thin eyelash/eyebrow lines.

2c. When in doubt, Zaoll. Seriously. Dollmore Zaoll heads seem to work with everything. I kinda kid, but also, not kidding. Zaoll heads are great because they are a face-plate style head that sits on top of the neck, so they perch on just about everything. Also - Dollmore constantly sells random heads for at least half-off in their "Special Sale" section. I had 4 - I recently sold one.

3. Paint/blush/dye to match. And you're done!

Ha ha ha. This is actually the hardest part - but it is possible. If you don't get the color you want on the first round, either wipe and start over, or spray sealant and add another layer of color. Oh, and something I learned from matching a body to a head - move the doll into different areas/under different lighting. Something that looks like a perfect match under cool, white lighting might look completely different under a warmer, yellower light.

The head I got this super-great-priced Zaoll body for didn't work well stylistically, so I tried Merry Doll Round Merry on it and hooray! She's adorable! Color match not great but size and style are. :)

I found this slightly broken American Girl doll wicker chair at the thrift store this month. It seems to work really well for 50ish cm dolls.

Meet Sadako 🥹 I just finished painting her face.

Sadako is a Parabox Otohime! She stands at 80cm, which makes her my largest doll.

I have been saving and waiting to get her for a while. Today she came in and she is MASSIVE. But also very light! She's a vinyl doll, so she's not quite a BJD.

But also, she's one of the cheaper dolls I own. My most expensive being a Dollmore Zaoll Muse.

And yes, I purposefully picked the name Sadako. If I get another one like her, I'm naming her Kayako.

I love D0llmore. Their dolls look so classy and antique-like. They're beautiful, cute and somehow gothic at the same time. Kind of Victorian. They also seem to be great quality - I've never seen anyone complain about it. And the prices are good, too. So it puzzles me, why there's not much D0llmore's dolls around BJD community nowadays. Though, it was quite a lot of model dolls and Zaolls a decade ago or so.

I'll get of their dolls once I decide which one (cause they're all adorable). Trinity is a dream, but I'm not a billionaire.
