The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware — 4⭐️
Here's the thing: I read a lot of books.
When you read a lot of books, you start to get desensitized to the good ones. You guess all the plot twists before they happen. Nothing really shocks you anymore, and while you can appreciate a well-executed twist, they don't hit you like they used to.
At least that's what I thought before I read The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware.

Only two books have made me literally gasp out loud in surprise over the past few years—The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson and Ruth Ware's latest release. I read that life-changing line towards the end of the book, gasped, audibly said "What???" and had to close the book for a few moments to register what I had just read.
This wasn't my favorite Ruth Ware book, that honor goes to The Death of Mrs. Westaway because creepy, gothic thrillers will always be my favorite. But I loved the atmosphere, tone and overall plot arc of this novel and I would highly, HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who needs a good twist in their reading life.

Things Bookworms are upset about:
- sequels coming out in a different size than the first book
- damaged book mail
- that we can’t read through our tbr pile before we die
- that time the Library of Alexandria got burned down
- the book waiting list in our local library

I’m a Ravenclaw and my husband is a Slytherin and we’ve actually had this EXACT conversation before.
Slytherin: Why is it whenever I'm having fun it's "wrong"?
Ravenclaw: Because your idea of fun is usually illegal!
Slytherin: That's what makes it fun!!

IMO, every woman is secretly envious they never got to wander around a (maybe?) haunted mansion hallway carrying a candle, dressed in only a big white night dress and thinking to themselves: ‘Hmmm. Something is going on.’

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw — 2.5⭐️
Let me preface this negative review by saying I didn't HATE this book. I was just incredibly disappointed in it *sends book to room*.
Tumblr media
I have been pretty excited about this book since it came out. A creepy/witchy/Practical Magic-ish YA standalone—ummmm yes, please. But The Wicked Deep fell so flat for me.
The ambiance gets a 10/10, that's why this book was a 2.5 for me rather than a 2. I adored the tiny, Oregon town setting and loved the spooky flashbacks to the Swan sisters. It was the plot that I truly didn't like. Penny and Bo's romance was so fast, rushed and unnecessary. I was hoping for a slow burn, but I didn't get it. Instead, we watch them fall in love instantly. I also really disliked the ending. I won't talk about it because...spoilers. But for me, it was just so fast, not logical, and honestly, just really stupid. Nothing the characters did at the end made any sense. Plus the sacrifices Penny and Bo made for each other didn't at all add up for two people who HAD LITERALLY JUST MET and had sex a couple of times.
Soooo I guess you could say I was mega disappointed with this book. If you are a fan of Hocus Pocus/Practical Magic type movies, I would still recommend picking it up for the atmosphere alone—just don't expect a plot masterpiece.
