The parallels between the 4.10 fight and the 5.10 fight are so juicy
The 4.10 fight occurred bc VR-LA didn’t take an ultimatum that would lose him some of his memory
The 5.10 fight occurred because Kyana didn’t take an ultimatum that would give her information about her past
(VR-LA technically made the choice before the 5.10 fight Kyana knew what VR-LA would do with it and put it in his hands anyways)
Throughout the 4.10 fight everyone but VR-LA goes down; VR-LA barely takes damage if I remember correctly
Throughout the 5.10 fight, everyone but Kyana goes down. She wasn’t even attacked

I’ve been relistening to earlier episodes too and oh man, just wait until you get to episode four… VR-LA says maybe the most ironic line of the entire campaign
re listening to the Per Aspera campaign. Episode one and I’ve wanted to make several jokes that only show up later in the campaign. Specifically “There’s bones in there??”. Y know, skull of the dead god and scrawling a of secrets on bones.

The thing about Monster that I'm currently obsessed with: the way Odysseus humanizes his enemies as he dehumanizes himself. He correctly describes the motivations of the Cyclops, Circe, and even Poseidon which takes a level of understanding that people struggle with under the best circumstances. But then in the same verse he describes himself from the view of the Trojans. ("Does a soldier use a wooden horse to kill sleeping soldiers because he is vile?")
and of course the whole song is "Monster". If Odysseus can't stop seeing his enemies as people (seeing his own son in the Trojan infant), if that is what is killing his men and if there is no future where he makes it home as the person he is, then of course he has no choice but to stop being a person.

also re last post i think a crucial part of treating your ace friends like you actually respect them is not acting like non-sexual content and child-friendly content are the same thing. which also means not assuming all stories and media aimed at adults need to contain sex (@ creators, take note). because it's shitty to be an adult and find that there is nothing out there written for someone like you and everyone's suggestions are always for children's media. there's nothing wrong with kidlit etc but sometimes, you know, you're an adult, you want stories that reflect the fact that you're an adult, and you want acknowledgement that adulthood and interest in sex are not synonyms. and likewise when you are writing non sexual content for an adult audience it sucks to have people assume it's meant to be for kids and to expect it to fulfil a purpose it wasn't made for

for the person asking what the fics were:
The first was actually a series: meteor shower by spoondrifts. There’s two fics but only one was tagged with “Aromantic Asexual Alastor” hence why I only counted it as one. It’s a story about queerplatonic Rosie/Alastor/Vox and I thought it was very cute.
The second and my favourite is Bank’s Closed by Scenefox2003, which is just a very thorough and respectful exploration of the aroace experience through the lens of this character. The writer is aroace too which is probably why it’s so accurate and heartfelt. I highly recommend.
Also if anyone else has other recommendations of good fics please reblog them, I’m starving.

me crawling through the slew of smut under the “Aromantic Asexual Alastor” tag to find the two (and I MEAN two) good fics that actually respectfully explore Alastor being aroace

Oh absolutely! This is why when I ran a game for my mom and younger brother, both of whom had never played anything like dnd before, I restricted their class choices and only had them picking from the base phb lineages. They had a great time and weren’t bogged down having to learn spellcasting mechanics on top of all the other rules.
Want to know my spiciest d&d take as someone who introduces a lot of people to the game?
Classes (and subclasses) should be rated for complexity, and newer players should be steered away from overly complex options so that they're not asked to do double or triple the work of memorization of other players. This is especially true if the player is going to be slower to pick up on game mechanics, be they young, old, or simply not someone who's very experienced with games in general.
Think about it this way: everyone at the table is expected to learn the base game (what dice to roll, how to pilot their character by talking, actions in combat), some of which is written down but the rest being vibes based and mostly communicated through gentle coaching by the DM. On top of that a portion of your players are going to have to learn how spells work, effectively doubling or trippling their early game class features. This is to say nothing of druids, who not only have to learn all the base features and spells but also have to keep several different statblocks on hand when it comes time to turn into animals/summon familiars. If you have my luck, it's always going to be the shyest/most anxious player at the table who selects the most complicated class, paradoxically meaning the player who's least likely to ask for help is usually in most need of it.
I'm not saying we should restrict all new players to only playing vanilla human champion fighters, but I think a level of oversight is absolutely necessary when guiding new folks into the game. Consider running a trial adventure that's limited to martial classes, introducing a few magic items half way through to give them a taste of what spellcasting could be like.
Forget about the traditional Tank/dps/expert/support/caster party balance, that shit is for experienced players who know what they're doing.

This one is arguably very personal because I have no idea if other aros feel the same – but I've seen too many stories about a character being rejected where the person doing the rejecting is (accidentally or not) implied to be some sort of "bad guy" or "the one who has it easier", so I guess I had an itch to show my side.
Aromantic people and alloromantic people have such different views on what "true love" is that it's not about one or the other being "in the wrong" – it's just one big compatibility issue. All I can say is – as an aromantic, being confessed to romantically IS what leaves me heartbroken, for such reasons. Hopefully there will be a broader understanding of this in the future.

Yeah, I know "not all aro/aces" and all, but please don't use "not all aro/aces" as an excuse to not explore anything exclusively aro/ace ever. Otherwise any trace of aro/aceness might end up effectively lost to fandom osmosis.
To sum up... If you wouldn't be homophobic that way, please don't be aphobic that way.

Hold up, I thought Odysseus’s mother’s bit in The Underworld sounded familiar!! Penelope sings it later in The Challenge! I’m not going crazy!

I’m sorry the mental image of Maxim having a spelljammer house and a giant floating gear hanging about on the astral sea, acting like a way stop for the Per Aspera whenever the gang needs a quick stop. There’s a retractable dock attached to the gear now, a set of extra rooms for them to use when they need, and a lab Dani’s taken over. After a few years, he starts allowing merchants and traders onto the outer rim of the gear. At some point, after a close call with Gith pirates, VR-LA installs a portal to Limbo in his basements. His home becomes a known sanctum against the githyanki and other nasties of the planescape, as well as the first stop on the journey if you want to get outside the planescape, and into the next. Please let me have this I beg of you.
