Hi, I read your fics for the last two microfic prompts and I'm really curious: Do you look at the prompts and come up with a constant plotline because of them or do you think if the story beforehand and make it "fit" to the prompts? (the storys are so cool btw)
I had planned the story beforehand for blood in coffee and drift and made it fit the prompts but for the rest of them I came up with the plot after seeing the prompts. The Halloween one was completely spontaneous. I changed the initial plot halfway.
And thanks for liking the stories. I'm going through a bad block and I only write microfics now so it means a lot to me

Regulus frowns, “About what?”
James’ face fills with such condescending pity that Regulus wants to punch his jaw broken, “Oh love, this mansion is simply a trap. To lure the guileless humans in. They are sacrifices, you see. To keep the magic satisfied. The virus was made by the three of us. And you already know we achieved immortality with a mix of science and black magic. But you see Regulus, magic doesn’t do anything for free. In exchange for immortality, we have to give it human blood and flesh every Halloween.”
James says it so easily. Like it doesn’t matter at all. All the people they’ve been sacrificing for something as ridiculous as an eternal life doesn’t matter at all. 
“That’s why we had spread the disease. We had to sacrifice quite a lot to activate the magic, but we now just need to sacrifice a few humans every year to keep the magic satisfied and the portal functional.”
“What portal?”
James looks so fucking excited to be talking about this. That psychopath. “This is where science comes in. When we found the book about the magical procedure, we thought it was needlessly complicated and difficult. It was just such a hassle,” James makes an annoyed face and Regulus can’t believe this guy. Sirius is right – he has the worst taste in men. “We modified the spells easily. And that’s how,” In the blink of an eye they are in the library in front of the portrait over the mantle. “We turned the picture into a portal. The magic didn’t just make us immortal, it opened a whole new world for us to exercise our true powers. The world on the other side is almost a mirror version of this one. The only difference is that we’re the ones ruling that world.”
So that’s why their figures are so grotesque in the portrait. That’s their mortal soul that they gave up. 
“That’s the choice I’m giving you, Regulus. Come with me to the other side.”
“Why? So that you can sacrifice me too?”
James actually has the audacity to look hurt by his words. What the fuck. 
“I would never do that to you. A few people came to this place just before you three. We already used them. I just–we were actually going to let you go, you know?”
“Oh I should be so fucking grateful, shouldn’t I?!” He snaps.
“Regulus, I–I really do like you and I know you like me too. And you’ll like it in that world. I’ll make you happy.”
“You’re crazy–”
“Moreover,” James talks over him. “Your brother and friend are already inside.” 
Regulus’ blood runs cold. “What the hell did you do?” 
“I didn’t do anything. Nobody did. My friends were simply quicker to try to convince them to go with them. I’m the idiot who fucked around too long and gave you the time to figure everything out,” James shrugs. “So? What’s your choice?”
Regulus chuckles humourlessly, “Stop pretending I have one,” He swallows harshly and takes a deep breath. “What’re you waiting for? Let’s go.”
James grins.

“It wasn’t that hard,” Regulus knows he shouldn’t provoke James but he’s so fucking pissed off that he doesn’t give a shit anymore. “You practically laid it all out for me.”
James laughs, “You have no idea how much I love your feisty nature.”
“Shut the fuck up,” Regulus spits. “You created a disease with no cure. You caused a plague. You killed all these people. For what? Immortality? You absolute monster. And you don’t feel an ounce of remorse.”
James rolls his eyes, “The town folks were a necessary sacrifice,” He says dismissively. “Me, Remus and Evan were aiming for greatness no other human could even imagine – a mix of magic and science. The deaths of a few worthless people mean nothing. In the face of our superior power, they mean nothing.”
“Oh?” Regulus mocks him with a raised eyebrow. “Then did your parents’ deaths mean nothing too?”
Regulus knows he hit a nerve when he sees James’ jaw clench. “They didn’t understand,” James snaps and stands up with such force that the chair falls back on the floor. Regulus should be scared, but he’s so tired of being frightened all the time. “They opposed my goals. Told me to stop. I didn’t want to kill them. I loved them. But they didn’t see my vision and didn’t want immortality. So I had no other option but to let them get infected too.”
“You’re a monster.”
“I’m a God! I’m greater than any other human. I’m better than them all,” Then James’ face softens. “Regulus, come with me. Join me in this. You’re special. You’re smart and beautiful and perfect. You’re absolutely brilliant.”
Regulus wants to laugh, “You crazy bastard, go where with you? I’m stuck here as long as you want to keep me here. What’s with giving me a choice all of a sudden?”
James looks confused for a few seconds before his expression clears. Malicious glee fills his face. “Oh!” He exclaims cheerfully. “So you didn’t find out about that yet, I see.”

Regulus runs until the echo of James’ footsteps isn’t following him anymore. He knows better than to think he has lost James but at least a monster isn’t breathing down his neck now. He sees another door in front of him and slams it open. 
That’s his first mistake.
The room is red. There is nothing but red in the room. Blood is dripping from the curtains and the bedsheets, there is blood pooling on the floor, the rug is soaked with blood and the room reeks of rotten blood. Regulus covers his mouth with his hand and gags. But the sight of the blood or the smell isn’t the worst thing in the room. 
It James. Sitting in the centre of the room on a throne-like chair James has his elbow on an armrest and is leaning his head on his fist. He has the same warm smile on his face that made Regulus fall for him. His eyes are adoring and his expression is open and gentle. 
Nothing about him is monstrous. But Regulus knows better. James’ looks are deceiving and he has already been the victim of it once. He’s not going to let his guard down again. 
James’ smile sharpens just a little, “Looks like you figured it out, love.”

Regulus doesn’t have any more time. He can’t wait around any longer. He needs to get out of this place right now. No matter how much he wishes that it’s some sort of elaborate prank, it’s not. If he doesn’t even manage to escape this wing of the mansion then how the hell will he ever find Sirius and Barty? 
He tiptoes out of bed and quickly puts his clothes on. He checks on James and sees him sound asleep. Regulus doesn’t know if James is actually sleeping or simply pretending to, but he can’t find it in himself to care. He opens the door and soundlessly leaves the room. As soon as he closes the door, he fucking sprints.
Regulus has no goddamn idea where he is going, but he needs to get as far from James as he can. He takes a thousand detours to avoid the bedroom. He opens every single door not caring about the voices he hears from inside because guess what? There is fucking nothing inside those rooms. No hallucinations, no ghosts. Nothing. 
He doesn’t even come across any ghosts as he runs along the hallways. The ghosts aren’t probably real anyway. Just another twisted play of James. Every single thing in this house, every single death, even James' own so-called ‘tragedy’ is a byproduct of his and his friends’ selfishness. 
“Regulus,” He hears a crooning voice coming from somewhere behind him. But he doesn’t make the mistake of turning. He runs faster.

Regulus can’t sleep. His whole body is tense. He curls into himself and squeezes his eyes close. He can’t believe it happened. He’s so disgusted with himself. Because he let his happen. Because he liked it. He let James touch him in such an intimate way and liked every second of it. He shouldn’t have. 
James is a monster. He’s keeping him captive here. He has killed so many innocent people and he can kill Regulus anytime he wants. He shouldn’t have liked the way James’ lips felt against his own, the way his fingers glided across his skin, the way it felt to be in his embrace. 
He should have pushed James away, not melted into him. 
He can still feel James’ warmth against him, his breathy voice whispering sweet nothings into his ear. The teeth, the tongue, the marks sucked on his skin, he can still feel everything. 
He hates it.
(He craves it.)
He let himself fall in love with a monster, and now his heart isn’t getting the fucking memo that it isn’t some spooky Halloween movie. This is a life and death situation and Regulus’ stupid heart wants nothing but James. Even if that means choosing death.

Regulus' luck is running out. Correction: Regulus' good luck is running out. His bad luck has decided to make home over his head.
And Regulus is so fucking tired of this shit. James, that son of a bitch, is still acting like there's nothing wrong and is forcing Regulus to play his shitty game.
He's fairly certain James isn't going to kill him. Not yet, at least. Regulus has the inkling that he wants him to figure out his motive. How he became a monster and turned the mansion into a huge Venus Flytrap?
But how the hell is he supposed to figure the whole thing out if the only rooms he can enter are the ones James allows him to. Then also, he is always standing right behind Regulus and not letting him snoop.
Up until now, Regulus is thinking that maybe it's because the townsfolk tried to kill them. James did this out of anger and grief, but that doesn't quite feel right to Regulus. Then why fill the place with ghosts? Why play mind games?
Whatever the reason is, Regulus needs to figure it out fast before it's too late and James gets bored enough to kill him.

The mask James has carefully curated over himself is falling apart. James is a monster and Regulus can clearly see his monstrosity now. And James isn't even trying to hide it anymore. It's like he knows that there is nothing Regulus can do about whatever is happening around him. There is no way for Regulus to escape him. Especially when Sirius and Barty are still here somewhere in the mansion.
And of course, Regulus can't forget about James' two other friends, Remus and Evan, who are just as monstrous as James and are lurking around the mansion, haunting the place.

James knows Regulus knows. He can see the shift in his eyes. His chocolate orbs now seem red with bloodlust. It puts Regulus on edge. James can kill him anytime he wants. But James acts as if nothing has changed at all. 
“Good morning, love,” James kisses his temple and Regulus is left frozen on the bed. James sits across from him and puts the tray with breakfast between them. “I’m thinking we should try going north today. We have yet to check all the rooms there although I’m pretty sure the rooms are shifting on their own.”
“You would know, wouldn’t you?” Regulus says before he can bite his tongue.
James looks up at him slowly. He tilts his head to one side and gives him a once over, like a predator scrutinising its prey. There is a shadow of a smirk at the corner of his mouth that makes Regulus’ blood freeze in his veins. The smirk shifts into a bright beaming smile, “Of course I would. I’ve been living here a long time.”
Regulus swallows harshly and looks down at his plate again. He doesn’t have an appetite but he needs food if he’s going to stand strong against James. He is playing games with Regulus, he knows that. And Regulus doesn’t want to play along, but he also has no idea how to leave James’ playground. All the mind games are breaking his spirit, and perhaps, that’s exactly what James is aiming for.
