it's cool how twisty and layered the concept of home/the past is in fma 03 - the driving incident for the plot is the elrics refusing to accept change and trying to return to an idyllic past by resurrecting their mother.

when this fails, they make a very decisive break with the past by burning down their family home. they're done looking back - and yet fundamentally they're still trying to reclaim what was lost.

and then the story ends with the two of them cut off from the past entirely in a new and unfamiliar world. but the weight of the past bears unevenly on the two brothers. Al gets his body back and even loses his memories of the years he spent in the suit, albeit only temporarily; Ed remembers everything and retains his disability.

the desire to cut themselves off from the past by burning down their home led the boys here - but they did get part of what they wanted.

i suppose the real conclusion here is that life is a war of attrition, not equivalent exchange. the elrics had no hope of returning to their innocent childhood. the mother they tried to resurrect hated them. ed never got his arm back.

but the fact there's more to life than a rigid law of equivalent exchange doesn't mean accepting fatalism or despair. it doesn't mean nothing can be fought for, that trying to make things right is always pure hubris.

resurrecting Trisha was an abdication of the responsibility to move on and live. but fighting to restore Al's body was an acceptance of responsibiliy. it was facing the fact they fucked up and working to fix it- maybe not perfectly, but in some way.

Hmm FMA 03 but instead of the canon real-world-au ending, Wrath ends up ACTUALLY befriending the Elrics and then sacrificing himself at the end of the main series to get Al back, thus allowing Ed + Al to stay in their universe (with some kind of additional price, Al's memories like canon or the two having to feel horrible about losing their friend)
