Well well well... Funny seeing you here on the blog that you followed; actually maybe I should expect to see you here...
The bizarre adventure is still going I have just been experiencing pretty severe depression for several months. However, I still have lots to say. The adventure is here to stay and I am committed to making one post a week, here's hoping I have some good things to say.
Love all of you, unless you are a conservative, then I definitely don't love you 💜

I am back to work on Tribes of Orsinium: Dushnikh Yal. I started from scratch, because I have learned a lot of about development processes from college. It is going well so far, I have most of the main district redone and am looking forward to doing work on the market district.

Red Faction Guerilla Re(Mars)tered
Red Faction Guerilla was launched on June 2nd, 2009. The remastered, annoyingly title Re(Mars)tered released on July 3, 2018. The remaster is essentially the same game from 2009 with updated visuals. It is a third-person action shooter and takes place in an open world environment. So without further ado, let's talk about the game, starting the with theme.
The game takes place on a newly colonized Mars; which sounds great, but the colonizers are actually the super-evil, very original, space Fascist military, the Earth Defense Force (EDF). You play as new Mars miner man, Alec Mason, he arrives from a transport ship and immediately meets up with his brother Dan Mason (don't get attached). Alec and Dan converse about the state of the EDF occupation on Mars and eventually Dan tells Alec about the Red Faction, a terrorist organization that is interested in reclaiming Mars from the EDF. Dan is a member of the Red Faction and is interested in Alec joining. However, Alec wants nothing to do with it and instead they go out to receive some salvage from a nearby derelict building. This is where the game begins.
At this point you are given your sledgehammer and told to go mine some salvage from the buildings. The destruction physics are still quite good to this day and aged quite well. The hammer is capable of destroying almost any structure that exists in the game: walls, offices, towers, bridges, etc. I would love to say that the game really follows through on this mechanic. The ability to destroy almost anything has some really interesting implications for emergent gameplay. I am sad to say. the game does not lean into this. The game plays just about how you would expect an open world action game from 2009 to play. You have main missions that usually task you with following someone, following someone and not getting too close, shooting bad guys, and it even managed to get the AC-130 style gunship mission that was in every single game from 2009. Since it is a game from 2009, it is also an open world game with lots of superfluous side content that isn't very satisfying and basically boils down to go hear and do the thing. You can go here and drive a car, you can go here and blow up a building, you can go here and defend against waves of enemies. Because of this need for nebulous content, the level design suffers greatly.
The subtitle Guerilla, implies guerilla warfare, one would expect to be taking attacks of opportunity on high risk targets and then immediately ducking out to escape retribution. However, you mostly just fire and fire and fire at waves of enemies. I had hoped the game would use the advanced GeoMod 2.0 engine to give interesting choices for players. The game does not really leverage the idea of environmental destruction very well and it shows in almost every mission. The game tells you to go and save this group of hostages from a building, now you might be wondering if it is possible to free the hostages using some form of creative destruction. You would be sorely mistaken. In fact, the game actively discourages this because hostages can be killed by collapsing parts of the building, especially if they are on the second floor of a building. Destruction becomes an obstruction to fun, rather than the vehicle by which you enjoy the experience. However, your experience may be different, lets talk about mine a little more.
I have played a lot of the major open world games between 2006 and now. Once you have played so many games with the exact same core loop, you start to grow quite tired of the structure of conventional open world games. Mission after mission of an extremely mid story, and anytime not spent doing missions is spent driving to the next mission. Miles and miles of driving. You go to a location, to drive to a location, to do a few things and then repeat the whole thing all over again. It lacks any real depth and I wish that wasn't the case. After about 18 hours of playtime, I made it through the main story and completed a few side missions.
Ultimately, the game falls flat for me. The destruction is fun, but the game underutilizes what could be core feature and uses it as a gimmick instead. Red Faction Guerilla is a product of its time; it has a basic story about the rag tag group of dusty miners vs the high tech fascist EDF and their corporate interests.
5/10

I was working in a college game studio class this morning. I am very proud of my work today and the work of everyone around me. However, I do have a creeping suspicion that I am not quite cut out for this. The noise and chaos of it all really racks my brain and I wish that it didn't. I want to be a good developer, I even want to be a great developer, but that goal seems so far away right now.

I Like Games that Waste my Time
Red Dead Redemption 2, Death Stranding, Skyrim with way too many mods, etc.
Make me walk, make me sit through a 4 second collecting animation, make me stop and think about where I am going and what I am doing. The time spent reflecting during these quiet moments is much more important to me then 200 climbable watchtowers, or twenty camps that can be cleared out in the span of a few hours.
Sure, I don't hey repetitious gameplay loops where you engage in the same activity over and over at a fairly rapid pace, but I find they don't stick with me as long as those slow experiences. If I get in a massive fight and have at least 2 minutes to think about what just happened, there is some level of reflection. However, if the fight is followed in 30 seconds by another fight, I tend to find those encounters less memorable.
I want to think about those encounters and what they mean to me. What is my place in this world? What is my impact? Something more akin to the immersive sims of the past e.g. (Deus Ex).
I like feeling like a take up some amount of space and the world runs regardless of me. Sitting alone next to a campfire waiting for the morning is relaxing; even in a digital space. While Red Dead Redemption 2 is no immersive sim (though I really wish it was), I get lost in those moments between the story beats. Losing a friend in a violent gun battle and sometime after that taking a minute to ride down the road and reflect; maybe even get out near the water and fish for bass while I think about everything that has happened. Most people did not like the Guarma section of Red Dead Redemption 2, and I agree. For me Guarma was the epitome of go here do this gameplay; there was no room to breathe or think. No time to ruminate on everything that was happening in that moment. I believe that breathing room was essential to the core experience of the game.
Ultimately, this is a really long post that is saying; game designers, please waste my time if your world is worth seeing, I don't want to fast travel between all the care and effort you put into it.
TLDR: I like being bored and video games are adhd bait :>

I really underappreciate having a place where I can talk to myself. It is helpful in a very strange way. Wish I had something more important to say though.
