WE WANT YOUR (finnish) FILMS!
Tumblr media
We are looking for a film by a Finland-based artist/group to screen as part of our night of performance Looking down and backwards… at Kutomo, Turku on the 13th February.
A night of potentially trashy and possibly esoteric, music-filled performance as strategy for resistance for people who are generally unimpressed with the world but think it is better to laugh than to cry, to kiss than to kill with immigrants and animals and TRACEYEMINSOUNDSYSTEM.
To have your film considered send a link to the film and a text about why you might like to be part of this event by midnight on the 29th January. There is no fee for this screening because we have an unexpectedly small budget (and we know how much artists love to do things for free). Maybe we will select more than one film.
If you have any questions please email [email protected].
Please share with friends and enemies!

immigrants and animals (Jamila Johnson-Small and Mira Kautto) usually make dances, today we invite you to SEX - a week-long alternative artists’ discussion. SEX is an anti-festival and 24 hour artist retreat, a day-long working holiday. We want to make time to spend thinking about making art. The politics of presentation are something we constantly negotiate as freelance makers and instead of being public, performing, presenting or networking bodies we would like to invite other artists to spend time with us in a more intimate setting for discussing making, doing and being. This is a call out for five artists to each spend one day and a night with us in a London flat from noon til noon to talk and think about doing, making and being. The project will take place over a period of six days. We want to undo the professional body with everyday ‘realness’ and small intimacies by hosting the discussion in an apartment, cooking meals together, having a sleepover, sharing food, stories, grievances and questions for 24 hours. SEX is our third proposition in a series of things (events/happenings/workshops) that seek to undo what being ‘professional artists’ seems to demand from us as we feel this often compromises how we want to work, what we want to do and how we want to be in the world. This is in part to share our practice that isn't about getting better at anything other than being present, and attempting to articulate (physically, verbally, however) ourselves in ways that make sense to us and also communicate something to others. We are not interested in competition or hierarchies, we are interested in space and atmosphere and how we might create a level ground. How can we deal with the simultaneous diversity of our individual identities in communicating with other people as we are public, private, performing, professional, social, medical, political, loving bodies all at once? SEX will happen between the 22nd and 26th of September in London. This is a self-funded project, food and accommodation in a private apartment will be provided but we are sorry not to be able to cover travel costs. We would like to meet you. To apply for SEX, send us some kind of correspondence including motivation/questions currently concerning you, your availability during the week of the project and contact details by the 14th of August. The application can take any form, if you would like to send something in the mail then contact us via email for a postal address. We will be in touch by the 21st of August. The call is open for anyone with a creative practice. SEX will also happen in Helsinki in 2016. [email protected] About: immigrants and animals (Jamila Johnson-Small and Mira Kautto) have a dual base in London and in Helsinki. Working between these two cities, in countries that both sit at the edge of Europe and are estranged from the mainland in different ways we make work that echoes this estrangement and we feel rooted in neither community. Our work is a continual investigation into how we can present our different female bodies with agency on stage and why we might choose to parade ourselves in-front of a public in the first place. We have been working together since 2010 to make dances of resistance that explore the politics and perversities of casual desires. We aim to untangle agendas present in the conventional forms of things. As an independent conceptual dance outfit we don’t want our critical context to be shaped by anyone else, there is a DIY spirit to our work ethic and politics. Right now, we would like to be able to speak about our work better, to stop making things for a while and think about what we have made, to have more time for reflection, to have space to think about our practice and its place in the world, to have some other practitioners to talk about it all with.

Volksroom
Tumblr media
Things we have done in Brussels so far:
Eaten at an Indian restaurant (one of our favourite past times)
Stayed in doors for several days
Soaked some beans
Over five hours of karaoke
Been to the second hand shop
Watched a shit film (Maps to the Stars. Why?!)
Booked several Helsinki - London flights
Had many laughs with the Volksroom crew
Written and submitted a few applications
Rolled around on the foam roller
Realised that Mira will be in London for the next Arnold Swarzenegger All-Nighter at Prince Charles Cinema
As part of our intention to spend this week figuring out what mysterious things we have been doing when we have said that we are working all these years, we invited some other people to come to the studio to work with us - Salka Rosengren and Stav Yeini, whom we did not know at the start of the day. We spent the day teaching them the score for Laura Laura and then watching our performance from the outside. This was great. Small revelations. Tomorrow we work with Dani Romo Pozo and Liz Kinoshita to do the same.
Tumblr media
And on Monday, Laura Laura will be in the house as part of Open Mondays. If you are in Brussels, come see it! Maybe we will blow your mind. After all the work-in-progress sharings, she is finally ready. If you can read Finnish, here is a review of the performance we did last week at Kutomo. Apparently we are androgynous and our double-bill has a great concept. Mira's translation:
The similarity between the dancers in demeanour, movement and the realisation of the piece is highlighted so that the difference in ethnic background seems to disappear. In this way the familiar boarders/restrictions between different identities dissipate and multiply.
Today saw the birth of our side-project: tinosehgalsoundsystem. A tribute to TRACEYEMINSOUNDSYSTEM (thank you, Aaron Wright). Hope that it doesn't come to your town any time soon...

WE WANT YOU (if you are in London)
Hello!
Some weeks ago we published a call out on our website for a new work that will be presented in January as a part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog. As we have not yet said much about it on the blog here it comes:
ARTIST CALL OUT - The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog
Tumblr media
immigrants and animals (FI/UK) want to commission a London-based artist (or group of artists) to make a new performance to be presented as part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog in London on the 16th January 2015. The night will be a triple bill including work by immigrants and animals, work from an invited Finnish artist and the commissioned performance.
This will be the first event in a series of exchanges happening both in Helsinki and in London. The intention is for it to be a place where we (immigrants and animals) can show our own work in a context and under conditions of our own choosing, rather than the context framed by another curator or framed by chance. We want to show the connections and contrasts between works made in the different environments we are working within. It is an approach to our baselessness that sees us creating in two different dance scenes and simultaneously outside of both.
The commissioning package will include a flat fee of £1000, 5 days (negotiable) rehearsal space and a performance as part of The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog. We are looking to commission an artist or group for whom the liveness, the socialness and the bodiliness of performance is important to create a work that fits the context of the event.
The performance should be suitable for a black box theatre (please bear in mind there will be no raked seating) and last no more than 30 minutes. You must be available on 16th January for the performance, Sunday the 11th January for a technical rehearsal and Thursday 14th or Friday 15th to meet other artists involved. Rehearsals will take place between the 1st December and 10th January. Everyone involved should be over 16 years of age.
Upon selection we will meet with the artist/s to further discuss the proposed show.
To apply please send us:
Name/s
50 words about anything (yourself, your work, the proposed show, whatever)
Preferred dates between 1st December and 10th January for rehearsal
Contact details (phone number, email, home address)
Link to a video trailer (hosted on Vimeo or Youtube) no longer than 3 minutes for the show you would like to make (Technical skills are not too important, nor is the quality of the recording necessarily. If you do not have access to equipment and would still like to apply then send us an email. If you for any reason it is not possible for you to send us a video and you would still like to apply then send us 3 minutes of audio. If for any reason this is not possible for you and you would still like to apply then send us a proposal in any form that is possible for you)
Following the deadline and selection, around ten submitted videos will be published on the immigrants and animals blog. Please only apply if this is okay with you. The intention behind this is to have a more transparent and generative application process.
We will make our selection based on the seeming relevance of the proposition to the other works to be presented in the evening and how excited we get whilst watching. We will take into consideration the number of people in the group when making our selection as we would want everybody to receive a fair wage.
The deadline for applications is midnight on the 16th November. We will be in touch on the 24th November.
If you have any questions please email [email protected].
immigrants and animals is a conceptual dance outfit of two with Jamila Johnson-Small and Mira Kautto. Jamila is based in London and Mira in Helsinki, we work between these bases. We make esoteric, trashy, critical, repetitive dance works as an attempt to resist other bullshit things in life.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Jamila and Mira
<3
The Lone Wolf, the Dark Horse and the Underdog is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
The same information can be found on our website too. We would love to hear form you and see what you want to make!

Laura Laura and William William Are In Love
Tumblr media
Mira is in London and on Friday - the 3rd of October - we will be performing a mash-up of Laura Laura and William William as part of the The Palest Light at TripSpace:
http://www.tripspace.co.uk/
THE PALEST LIGHT #5 focuses on performances that examine stereotypes of gender and sexuality. How do we hold the body in relation to our gender, what do we communicate through these restrictions, and what feedback do we receive from others?
Originally we imagined these shows would be performed as one, always as a double-bill and together they form a study on gender in performance that is grounded in our love of music, our disgust at the promotion of oppressive stereotypes of gender and sexuality in mainstream pop music used as a vehicle for systematic misogyny, and our belief in live performance as a potential site of resistance.
The chase is better than the catch. LOCKUPYOURDAUGHTERS.
We hope to see some of you there! Friday, 8pm, tickets £10/£8 on the door, 339-340 Acton Mews, Hackney, London, E8 4EA.

Beautiful like a camel
Tumblr media
My brothers were given the names of freedom fighters and I got one that means something like 'beautiful' or even 'beautiful like a camel'. Fuck being a girl.
On Thursday night I performed something as part of the performance-based research for my solo at London Topophobia at a space on The Oval.
I wanted to do something autobiographical. I didn't want to be cool or distant. I was obsessively reading Nelson Mandela's autobiography, probably as some kind of weird attempt to connect with my dead estranged father who also, instead of spending time with his family, seemed to prioritise The Struggle.
I went to the studio and felt a bit lost - how to compose something from material so painful and uncomfortably close? I thought about the feeling of my father's hand on my three-years-new belly.
I thought about having to stand up in front of people and tell me them things about my life. My private life. I thought about the song Private Life by Grace Jones, a song that Mira said I remind her of at a certain point in Laura Laura. I thought about my mother making a me a Josephine Baker costume to wear to a fancy dress party when I was six. I thought about famous black women. I thought about my dad's obsession with Claudia Jones.
J'en ai marre with your theatrics, your acting's a drag. It's okay on TV but you can turn it off. Your marriage is a tragedy but it's not my concern. I'm very superficial, I hate everything official. Your private life drama, baby leave me out.
I managed to think about Me and begin composing something that is close. It is a beginning, I think.
My score so far:
It starts. It goes on. I say something. I dance. It ends.
I did two performances and in-between I drank a bottle of prosecco. The second one was better.

Nineties nostalgia
Dear Slim,
OH MY GOD we forgot to include The Craft in the original Luxembourg film ratings post. Major ommission.
Tumblr media
It is one of the many films/tv shows about 'witches' or relating to the occult that uses The Smiths 'How Soon Is Now?' as part of the soundtrack.
It was a sunny nostalgic day, the perfect day for watching a film that was enjoyable as a young teenager and is now something of an offensive horror-show that seems to preach that girls (well they are women really, pretending to be girls, weird in itself) don't have friendships because they like and respect each other rather they constantly compete and manipulate one another, craving and validating themselves through sexual attention from boys who abuse them.
This doesn't go pear-shaped or get too unbearable until the second half of the film and there are some moments that remind me of the gloominess of being a teenager.  Great.
Tumblr media
And some nineties fashion gems.
Tumblr media
Our nineties nostalgia did in fact also include trying to remember the most annoying songs of the decade. We came up with:
The Scatman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6oXW_YiV6g
Freestyler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymNFyxvIdaM
Stan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOMhN-hfMtY
Ebeneezer Goode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFJdUJg4wOk
Spaceman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCbAEkfXSDE
And many more...

Farewell Luxembourg, get ready Oulu!
We had the most wonderful time at the residency with Trois C-L and Laura Laura is becoming a grown up. It was a luxury to have people help with practical things at Banannefabrik and in the end we performed to a full house in a varied evening of new work. Here is a brief summary of what we experienced during our stay:
- Met a bunch of great people we hope to see again
- Many plans of going to the theme park, which never happened
- 5 films for 25 euros at the cinema
- Late nights (working)
- Cheese
- Trailer trouble
- A lot of Karaoke, especially Alice Cooper, although we are better crooners
- A very welcome visit by the great Steph
- Bunch of other stuff I won't write about so I won't get too nostalgic
Tumblr media
Next week we will be heading to Oulu and OuDance with Laura Laura and are super excited to spread her Love in the north too! Be there on the 11.9.!
