Week 9: Going live
This year, Griffon Media created a new TV Show called KGSM-TV.
This is a fantastic experience for the students in the program because it is giving them all an inside look at what the real world is like.
Tumblr media
I have a lot of high hopes about how the students will do. We plan to go live sometime soon in the future and I’m nervous. I think the students will d just fine, I just worry that people will judge our work.
All in all, I’m excited to keep working.

Week 8: Why Spring Break is important
With us having only four weeks of the semester, lots of students are finally feeling refreshed after spring break.
Tumblr media
Spring break is a major help to students every year, especially this year. I went to Dallas for my break and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Being away from Missouri was incredible. Away from school, away from family, away from responsibilities, all of it. I would give anything to go back and pursue journalism out there. The opportunities would be endless.
I can’t wait for summer break now.

Week 7: How the trump administration has ruined the media
Anyone who knows me knows that I don’t really have the best opinion of former President Donald Trump or how he was as the leader of the free world. In my opinion, he did a great job at ruining a lot for the journalists of the world.
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong, journalism has never been perfect, and it never will. But I genuinely believe he made it harder for the people in our field to succeed. Before the Trump administration, “Fake News” wasn’t a term you heard often. But after Trump, any time a journalists does almost anything, it’s considered fake news.
I think because Trump was so out there as a leader, it resulted in stories becoming a little more out there. I think journalists felt the need to match his level of crazy sometimes.
We’ve been a divided country for quite some time, and I have no doubt that Trump added to that. It stinks, but that’s where we are.
I think he makes journalist struggle.

Week 6: Why the media is important
As a multimedia journalist, I obviously have a very strong opinion on the topic that I’ve chose for this week. Journalism and the media are necessary to live.
Tumblr media
Without the media, people would see a major change in their lives. What would they do to get their news? Major events would be happening on a day to day basis and they wouldn’t have any idea. Breaking news, governmental changes, etc.
They are the reason that they’re involved and know what’s happening.
People like to go around and say that we’re the “fake news” wand while I hate this statement because it’s true for some, It’s not true for all. Some of us are working hard for to bring you the news and the truth. A little bit of support wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
Tumblr media
It’s a shame that we live in a time like this where people feel this way. Journalist are here to help you not hinder you. I can only hope that one day we see this change.

Week 5: Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine
Well, I did it. I got the first round of shots for the COVID-19 vaccine. And let me just say, ow.
Tumblr media
I’m super proud of myself for taking the initiative to get the vaccine and do my part with stopping the spread of the virus, but I was not ready for the side effects.
At first, I felt really warm. Like really, really warm. I had a small headache kick in and I felt kind of sick. After getting some coffee and food in my system, I felt a lot better. As the day has continued on, I’ve slowly felt worse and worse.
By far the worst part is the never ending pain in my arm. Every move I make hurts. And the body aches have started to take over which is not fun.
Funny enough, the headache and the body aches feel pretty similar to when I had COVID-19 around this time last year.
Tumblr media
Overall, I’m still very happy that I got the vaccine, I just wish it didn’t hurt so bad. I apologize for not writing more, but I’m in so much pain, I’m going to bed.

Week 4: Gen Z do be sad though
It’s no secret that Generation Z is a little bit out there and tend to live different lifestyles. Part of it because they want to see change and want to do whatever it takes to make it happen. But it’s hard to do it when the generation is struggling so much with their mental health.
Tumblr media
It’s hard enough growing up and facing the normal teenage struggles, but growing up in a pandemic and watching “history take place” every day can be quite draining on your mental health.
This generation tends to “idealize” or “romanticize” depression and anxiety, but the bigger concern should be about how Gen Z shows higher rates of depression. They scored the highest on the Loneliness Scale test.
In 2017, the latest year for which federal data are available, more than 1 in 8 Americans ages 12 to 25 experienced a major depressive episode, the study found.
Though 37% of Gen Z reported receiving help from a mental health professional, only half said they felt they did enough to manage their stress.
Tumblr media
A large portion of the generation has resorted to humor to cope with their trauma and depression. Memes have become a cry for help, but also something to laugh at when you realize you’re not alone.
Overall, Gen Z has dealt with quite a bit in their lifetime, especially during ages that are so influential to the rest of their life.

Week 3: The weather outside is frightful
Winter can be a season filled with cozy nights by the fire, hot chocolate, snow days and much more. But as we get older, winter is not what we always thought it would be. It actually can be extremely harmful according to some studies.
Tumblr media
One of the most negative and common effects of the cold season is seasonal affective disorder. When everything is cold and dreary and you’re stuck inside, it’s hard for many to stay positive. It often leads to major depressive episodes that can last months.
Other major concerns are dry skin and eyes, bad eating habits, a lack of routine - especially with exercise - and migraines. All of these can take tolls on your body.
Tumblr media
This year has been one of the most brutal winters we’ve had in years. I’ve felt terrible and most of the people I know have as well. Thankfully, it appears to be getting better soon.

Week 2: The toll of the journalistic field on mental health
It’s no secret that the job you have can and will effect your mental health. Journalists put themselves at risk through majority of their time in the field. They cover mass murders, car wrecks, and much more. All of these upsetting stories will eventually change someone’s outlook on life and make them more prone to mental health disorders.
Tumblr media
The article that I read from JournalistResource.org goes in-depth on several different levels and goes into great detail with statistics and facts about how the job can effect people.
The article from JournalistResource.org talks a little bit on very specific situations such as hurricane coverage, what it’s like in the newsroom and more. The details that are discussed talk about how some journalists suffer from PTSD’s after covering specific events. There are also some statistics that discuss how some journalists turned into alcoholics after certain event coverage.
Tumblr media
I think it’s important for journalists to realize that they’re not alone with these issues and there are lots of resources available to them to help cope. I often feel like I’ve been burnt out in the field due to some of the coverage I’ve done, but knowing that I’m not the only one makes me feel a lot better. I hope journalists everywhere can acknowledge their struggles and get the help they need.

Week 1: The mind of a college kid in a pandemic
It’s safe to say that everyone has been hit in some way, shape or form due to the COVID-19. It’s obviously taken a toll in the workforce, regarding physical health, and most of all, mental health.
Mental health concerns typically have a negative connotation, but it can completely change your outlook on life and how you want to live. For many college students, their mental health is at some of the lowest points ever in their life while they’re attending school. With a pandemic keeping them from getting the social interaction they need, it’s no wonder that their mental health is increasingly getting lower.
Tumblr media
As a college student who has struggled with their mental health for several years, I can say that this pandemic has affected me in many different ways. Due to the pandemic, I was able to take some time to myself to start recognizing when I was struggling. That being said, now that I’m back in school, I feel worse than I have in a long time.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m doing great in my life right now, but I’ve lost all motivation to do anything regarding school. I want to spend my days in bed, I want to be anywhere except campus. I want to find a passion again.
Tumblr media
I feel for all of the students that are struggling right now. It’s a difficult time to be in school and deal with so many issues. I’ve got my fingers crossed that we can all move past it.
