Zukka au where they keep seeing each other in the palace corridors every night and it’s really awkward because Sokka’s a spy who’s having secret meetings to plot to take down the Fire Lord (Zuko’s father) and Zuko’s an insomniac

Ok minor detail but ...

So I noticed in A:TLA, and it’s carried over in LoK, that Airbenders always seem to have an advantage in a fight. And at first, it felt like plot armour, particularly in A:TLA.

But when Aang fought Bumi, he lost most of that advantage. And I realised that this wasn’t just plot armour. Someone had sat and worked it out: nobody has had to fight Airbenders for generations. 

None of the other nations have had to train to face them, or practised sparring with them, or anything. Apart from Bumi, no bender in the show has ever even met an airbender before Aang comes along. And in LoK, for the most part people still haven’t. We never see fights between those who have (for e.g. we never see Tenzin and Lin fight); when Korra and Tenzin use airbending, its a unique fighting style that people aren’t trained to manage.

It’s a really small detail, and it fundamentally works to give the heroes an advantage (and make up for Aang’s young age and lack of combat experience), but I love how it’s an advantage in combat for completely logical reasons.

The detail in these shows is amazing.

look we know Iroh can see spirits bc he saw Aang on the dragon in book one and Zhao mentions that its because he’s been to the spirit world

anyways uh Sokka was taken to the spirit world by Hei Bai and after he can see glimpses into the spirit world. he’s confused at first, but after a talk with Aang, it makes sense and he moves on.

until Yue. the first time he sees her after she dies it’s just for a second, a glimpse out of the corner of his eye. the moon is full and light filters down through the trees above.

the second time he sees her, he really sees her. theyre in Ba Sing Se, and he sees her standing by the window late at night. he nearly choked on his breath as she smiled at him and as a cloud passed over the moon, she was gone again.

he saw her again after the war while he was bedridden and healing. they talked that time, about everything and nothing, until she had to leave again. he notices others around more often after that, filtering in and out of the Fire Nation Palace. he even sees Avatar Roku on occasion.

he sees her less as time goes on. he works in the Fire Nation as an ambassador, working day in and day out. he works with zuko too, through long nights that drag on to longer days. if he spends more time in zuko’s room than his own, well that’s his own business. yue makes it her business though, the next time she visits. its late at night and zuko has long since passed out, fully dressed, on the bed. sokka is finishing up the report for the morning meeting when he sees her. and for the first time- he isn’t happy to see her. hes angry and confused since she hasnt visited in over a year. harsh words are exchanged, because he misses her every day and he looks forward to every chance he gets to see her.

its years until he sees her again. after a necklace is exchanged, followed by vows. Izumi is two months old, with beautiful eyes and a smile that knocked Sokka’s breath from him when he first saw it. she’s had a cough for the last two days that rattles her entire, tiny body and breaks his heard each time he hears it. Katara is on her way, but the healers are worried she won’t make it through the night. zuko’s with him as he holds her to his chest, singing her song to her when he hears the matching harmony. he looks up to see Yue, tears in his eyes. “please don’t,” he whispers to her, waking Zuko from the very light sleep he was under.

Yue, for all she is, just smiles at him. she looks down at Izumi and remembers a story her parents told her, about a different princess who was nearly lost to sickness. Sokka is shaking his head, his tears falling more freely. “please. anything else.” Zuko is rubbing his arm, trying to shake Sokka from whatever dream he appeared to be having.

Yue steps closer, moonlight ending just at Sokka’s feet. she reaches up to brush her fingertips over Izumi’s wispy hair, then turns her gaze to Sokka. “she’ll live through the night,” she promises.

she doesn’t leave after that. she follows the moonlight filtering in through the window until the moon is gone. she listens to Sokka and Zuko talk, makes comments about Zuko’s hair and mannerisms. she tells Sokka he picked a good one, and that she’s proud of him. that she stopped coming because he needed her less and less.

in the morning she’s gone. Katara comes, and Izumi is still breathing. it’s a rough recovery, but she survives. the streak of white in her hair never leaves, and Sokka swears that some nights when he sees his daughter in the moonlight, he sees Yue smiling back at him.
