Danish pancakes
For any and all Danish learners, this is my (technically, it's originally from Frk. Jensens kogebog) recipe for Danish pancakes, proudly presented in Danish and English | italics indicated a comment. Note that in Denmark pancakes are a dessert. The are large but thin, like crêpes.
Ingredienser, fire portioner - Ingredients, four servings
4 dl mel - flour 4-5 dl mælk/hvidtøl - milk/light ale | plant-based milks work just as well as cow's milk. you should try it with light ale though, it's really good! 3-4 æg - eggs 1-2 spsk. sukker - tbsp. sugar | spsk. is short for spiseske 'tablespoon' 2 tsk. vaniljesukker - tsp. vanilla sugar | tsk. is short for teske 'teaspoon' 1 spsk. olie - 1 tbsp. vegetable oil en knivspids salt - a nip of salt | knivspids literally translates to 'knife tip'
Fremgangsmåde - method
1) Bland alle ingredienserne i en skål. Pisk evt. sukker og æg sammen først - Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Optional: whisk the eggs and sugar separately and then mix.
1a) Dejen skal have konsistens, så den kan hældes relativt let uden at være for tynd - The texture of the batter should be so that it's relatively easy to pour without being too thin.
1b) Teknisk set skal dejen hvile i køleskabet i en halv time, men man kan sagtens bruge den med det samme - Technically, the batter is supposed to rest in the fridge for half an hour, but you can use it immediately without problem.
2) Varm en smule olie på en stegepande - Heat a bit of oil in a frying pan.
3) Bag pandekagerne ved mellemhøj varme (ca. 7 på komfur med 1-9) - Fry the pancakes on medium-high heat (approx. 7 on a stove with settings 1-9) | generally Danish pancakes are the size of the pan you're frying them on, so make sure you cover the entire pan with a thin layer of batter.
4) Server pandekagerne varme med is, syltetøj, sirup, flormelis eller sukker - Serve the pancakes while hot with ice cream, jam, syrup or (powdered) sugar | in Danish, the separate word flormelis is used for powdered/icing sugar, not to be confused with puddersukker 'brown sugar'.

What is a ‘wug’?
If you’ve been to linguist tumblr (lingblr), you might have stumbled upon this picture of a funny little bird or read the word ‘wug’ somewhere. But what exactly is a ‘wug’ and where does this come from?
The ‘wug’ is an imaginary creature designed for the so-called ‘wug test’ by Jean Berko Gleason. Here’s an illustration from her test:
Tumblr media
“Gleason devised the Wug Test as part of her earliest research (1958), which used nonsense words to gauge children’s acquisition of morphological rules‍—‌for example, the “default” rule that most English plurals are formed by adding an /s/, /z/ or /ɨz/ sound depending on the final consonant, e.g., hat–hats, eye–eyes, witch–witches. A child is shown simple pictures of a fanciful creature or activity, with a nonsense name, and prompted to complete a statement about it:
This is a WUG. Now there is another one. There are two of them. There are two ________.
Each “target” word was a made-up (but plausible-sounding) pseudoword, so that the child cannot have heard it before. A child who knows that the plural of witch is witches may have heard and memorized that pair, but a child responding that the plural of wug (which the child presumably has never heard) is wugs (/wʌgz/, using the /z/ allomorph since “wug” ends in a voiced consonant) has apparently inferred (perhaps unconsciously) the basic rule for forming plurals.
The Wug Test also includes questions involving verb conjugations, possessives, and other common derivational morphemes such as the agentive -er (e.g. “A man who ‘zibs’ is a ________?”), and requested explanations of common compound words e.g. “Why is a birthday called a birthday?" Other items included:
This is a dog with QUIRKS on him. He is all covered in QUIRKS. What kind of a dog is he? He is a ________ dog.
This is a man who knows how to SPOW. He is SPOWING. He did the same thing yesterday. What did he do yesterday? Yesterday he ________.
(The expected answers were QUIRKY and SPOWED.)
Gleason’s major finding was that even very young children are able to connect suitable endings‍—‌to produce plurals, past tenses, possessives, and other forms‍—‌to nonsense words they have never heard before, implying that they have internalized systematic aspects of the linguistic system which no one has necessarily tried to teach them. However, she also identified an earlier stage at which children can produce such forms for real words, but not yet for nonsense words‍—‌implying that children start by memorizing singular–plural pairs they hear spoken by others, then eventually extract rules and patterns from these examples which they apply to novel words.
The Wug Test was the first experimental proof that young children have extracted generalizable rules from the language around them, rather than simply memorizing words that they have heard, and it was almost immediately adapted for children speaking languages other than English, to bilingual children, and to children (and adults) with various impairments or from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Its conclusions are viewed as essential to the understanding of when and how children reach major language milestones, and its variations and progeny remain in use worldwide for studies on language acquisition. It is "almost universal” for textbooks in psycholinguistics and language acquisition to include assignments calling for the student to carry out a practical variation of the Wug Test paradigm. The ubiquity of discussion of the wug test has led to the wug being used as a mascot of sorts for linguists and linguistics students.”
Here are some more illustrations from the original wug test:

If you’d also like to read the sagas in Danish (or Norwegian, or Swedish, or Icelandic, or Faroese), you can!
This link will take you to the main page for the Danish texts, but if you look at the top of the sidebar on the left of the page, you’ll see the option to view the texts in another language! Woohoo!
I’ve just recently finished the first volume of the Oldtidssagaerne, and can personally recommend specifically the Vølsungernes saga! Also featured in the book I read is Ragnar Lodbrog’s saga, which was also a delightful read! To find these quickly, just search for them in the search bar at the top of the page!
Happy reading, friends! ✌️💕📖

this is the level of madness and brilliance i want to be with my three majors
Unrealistic polymath genius: has six PhDs.
Realistic polymath genius: just has the one set of degrees, but their bachelor’s, their master’s, and their doctorate are each in a different field, and they’d be happy to explain – at great length – how the three relate to one another.

Oh, by the way, I absolutely take requests for finding resources for learning Danish! If there’s something you’d like to know more about, and it either isn’t already on the Big List of Resources for Learning Danish, or you wish there was something more on a certain topic, please let me know and I’ll try my best to find something useful for you! ☺️🇩🇰
(I also take submissions for resources to be added to the list, but I can’t guarantee all submissions will be added. What goes on the list is up to my discretion.)

Studies: May
I know, I know, we’re nearly half way into June. But this idiot had a load of stuff due and just never had the chance to post things.
I personally really like how the Heartstopper colour scheme worked out (even if a lot of the things were left blank.
I’m going to start another 100 days of productivity throughout June-August so there’s that.
Happy pride month :))

hi guys!! long time no see
so… turns out uni may just be too hectic for me to actually post every week (or daily)
but, I’ll definitely make monthly posts
and, who knows? maybe I’ll do another 100 days of productivity some time soon
(side note: I’m so ready to fill up the Heartstopper themed pages this month :)))
