To anyone who thinks we have progressed enough or that the fight for equality and understanding is over, my brother has just said to my face that only pretty women get raped. He said that to a woman who has spent many nights with her keys clutched between her knuckles and crossing the street every time a man came towards her. To a woman who had heard one to many stories of friends and strangers being sexually harassed and targeted. He said that I don’t have anything to worry about because I’m “not pretty”.

No matter how far we have have come, we have so much further to go. We need to abolish this rape culture and this dismissal of the struggles of ALL women. Nothing will ever change if we pretend the problems don’t exist.
