“Sometimes it can be hard to grasp how much time passed between events in the Bible. After the Old Testament’s completion, for instance, 400 years passed before God’s next direct revelation.

Let’s put that span in terms we can better comprehend. In 1620, the Pilgrims landed on the shores of what would become Massachusetts. That was 404 years ago. Think of all that has happened since then—everything from the American Revolution to man walking on the moon to the creation of artificial intelligence. God’s people waited that long without a word from the Lord! While many grew despondent, others clung to hope.

Anna, for example, was a widow and prophetess who served at the temple in Jerusalem, waiting for Israel’s redemption. She trusted that “A shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse ... and the Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him” (Isa. 11:1-2). This promised Messiah would bring order, strength, counsel, and wisdom as He delighted in the Lord, and He would make everything right.

Then, at the appointed time, Anna witnessed the miracle of fulfilled prophecy as she gazed into the face of the tiny baby Jesus. In response, she praised and thanked God for being faithful to His promise (Luke 2:38). Like her, we can praise God, secure in the knowledge that God will do all He says He will do.”

Anne had started school, which sadly had caused her and Magdalena’s relationship to become quite strained. Benjamin however, would often walk his little sister to school when their parents didn’t have the time. One day, when the pair were making their way to school, they saw a huge tent on the usually empty moor.

“What’s that?” Anne asked, tugging on her brother’s sleeve.

“It’s a circus,” Benjamin explained, “they travel all around the country, even the continent. They have all sorts of rides and shows. Sometimes they have strange animals from the orient!”

“Sounds like a gay time,” Anne said.

“It does,” Benjamin nodded, “if it’s not too expensive, perhaps we could all go.”

On his way back home, Benjamin saw two people dressed in strange clothing standing on a little stage near the big circus tent. Afraid to get too close, he decided to watch from a distance. But without realising it, he slowly crept closer and closer until he was snapped out of his trance when one of the people noticed him.

“What are you doing here, boy?” the man shouted, “We don’t open for another week!”

“I’m- I’m sorry, I just wanted to-“ Benjamin stammered.

“No free shows, lad,” the man said, “run along.”

“Give it a rest, Tim,” a female voice said. A woman with short cut hair appeared on staged, “leave the poor bugger alone, he’s not hurting anyone. Are you, boy?”

Benjamin shook his head profusely.

“No miss, I’m not. I’ll leave,” he said, but as he turned around to leave, Tim shouted after him.

“Oi! Tell us your name and you can stay,” he said.

“Benjamin, sir, Benjamin Gale,”

“Very well then, Benjamin Gale. Have a seat,” Tim said and gestured towards the hay bales.

Benjamin quickly sat down and silently watched in awe as the trio on stage began their rehearsal.
