fellow fansies - I have complied a (hopefully) comprehensive list of cast members for anyone new to the fandom or for those who may like a refresher on the casts. I've not included every single character, just the main ones, so if you'd like a character adding just ask; also if you notice any cast members are missing or have been labelled incorrectly in any way, please let me know, I want this list to be as accurate as possible. characters with a dash (-) for any of the categories I wasn't sure if they were included in that production or not. if you're able to fill in any of the blanks that would be much appreciated. any questions, please let me know <3

collaboration spotlight — Disney Playlist Sessions — Newsies
Continuing the celebration of Disney On Broadway's 20th anniversary, VoicePlay's talented arrangers put together a handful of songs for the North American touring cast of Newsies. These reimagined tunes span and mix genres in the guys' expect-the-unexpected fashion, and the talented cast members perform them beautifully.
These videos were filmed at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas during the week when the tour was performing there.
.
youtube
This song was a huge hit in 2015, and its exhuberent melody is a fantastic match for a group of young musical theater professionals. This is the most straightforward arrangement of the batch, but that doesn't make it any less fun.
Details:
title: Shut Up and Dance
performers: Dan DeLuca & the touring cast of Newsies
original performers: Walk the Moon
written by: Ben Berger, Eli Maiman, Ryan McMahon, Nicholas Petricca, Kevin Ray, & Sean Waugaman
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
release date: 26 March 2015
My favorite bits:
the rhythm being provided entirely by spoon playing, tap dancing, and a guy with a wooden box
those simple, solid backing harmonies
a quintuple pirouette in tap shoes, very impressive
Dan's flip up into falsetto during his quiet solo after the dance break
Trivia:
VoicePlay also arranged a portion of this song for themselves as part of their "Aca Top 10 – Summer Hits 2015" countdown.
.
youtube
Turning a classic wistful Disney ballad into a romantic duet could be a fairly simple task, so the VoicePlay boys decided to include a little twist. With the addition of a slightly faster, more jazzy rhythm, these actors made it endearingly flirty.
Details:
title: A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes
performers: Dan DeLuca & Stephanie Styles
original performer: Ilene Woods as Cinderella in Disney's Cinderella (1950)
written by: Mack David, Al Hoffman & Jerry Livingston
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
release date: 2 April 2015
My favorite bits:
the swingy beat and surfer movie instrumentation
the little harmonizing moments as they pass the melody back and forth
Stephanie's incredible vibrato
Trivia:
VoicePlay had previously recorded a portion of this song as the opening segment of the Pumpkins, Poppins, and Sorcerers medley on their 2012 album of Disney music, "Once Upon an Ever After".
.
youtube
Within the show, this song is a rousing anthem for the newsies. This version adds a more feminine touch and a groovy beat that stands on its own.
Details:
title: Seize the Day
performers: Angela Grovey & the touring cast of Newsies
original performers: the cast of Newsies (2012)
written by: Alan Menken & Jack Feldman
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
release date: 9 April 2015
My favorite bits:
Angela building from soft and breathy to a big, bold belt
love a good bell chord, especially on a lyric like ♫ "one" ♫
the boys' synchronized scoops after the key change
and a bit of funky bass to round things out
Trivia:
VoicePlay included a brief excerpt of this song in their "aca-Disney" medley that they recorded as part of the kickoff to Disney On Broadway's 20th anniversary celebration.
.
youtube
The best mashups have a unifying theme, and this one definitely follows that rule, interweaving two hopeful, defiant songs by downtrodden residents of the Big Apple.
Details:
title: King of New York mashup
performers: Jacob Kemp & the touring cast of Newsies
original songs / performers: "King of New York" by the Broadway cast of Newsies (2012); "Why Should I Worry" by Billy Joel as Dodger in Oliver & Company (1988)
written by: "King of New York" by Alan Menken & Jack Feldman; "Why Should I Worry" by Dan Hartman & Charlie Midnight
arranged by: Layne Stein & Geoff Castellucci
release date: 16 April 2015
My favorite bits:
Jacob staying in that distinctive theatrical accent while singing
DeMarius's gritty high notes
those crunchy harmonies on ♫ "Why should I worry?" ♫
Trivia:
Like regular VoicePlay collaborator Deejay Young, DeMarius Copes went on to be a longtime member of the touring cast for Hamilton, with the Philip tour ensemble.
.
Extra:
As a bonus video for this series, castmember Zachary Sayle, who played Crutchie on the tour, recorded a performance of a song newly added to the show, "Letter from the Refuge".

As you know, Jacob Kemp is raising money for Covenant House and you should totally donate.
However, he’s not the only member of the Newsies family to be raising money for homeless kids. I’ve listed the others below!

If anyone else in the Newsies family joins this effort, I will update this post.

ignore my lack of artistic ability and hear me out.
so I had this dream, and for whatever reason I decided to draw it out for you.
Ben Cook showed up at my window as Peter Pan, followed by Josh Burrage as Tinker Bell. they taught me and my brothers Stephen Michael Langton and Anthony Rosenthal how to fly, and off we went. second star to the right, and straight on till morning.
we found ourselves flying over Neverland, past Angela Grovey and Bowry Beauties as mermaids in the lagoon, and Jeff Heimbrock in the Tiger Lily headdress dancing around a fire.
We had a short run in with Captain Pulitzer, and his crew, comprised of: Mike Ryan, Jon Hacker, Anthony Norman, Brendon Stimpson, Mike Faist, and Adam Kaplan. before landing safely and meeting up with the lost boys. MASTER (2022)
Starring Regina Hall, Zoe Renee, Amber Gray, Molly Bernard, Nike Kadri, Ella Hunt, Talia Ryder, Talia Balsam, Bruce Altman, Noa Fisher, Anna Van Patten, D.C. Anderson, Angela Grovey      , Will Hochman, John Kroft, Kara Young, Emmett Carnahan, Megan Byrne, Orlagh Cassidy, Robert Emmet Lunney, Joel de la Fuente, Jennifer Dundas and Julia Nightingale.
Screenplay by Mariama Diallo.
Directed by Mariama Diallo.
Distributed by Amazon Studios. 98 minutes. Rated R.
The word “master” has a lot of meanings – and a lot of resonance – in Mariama Diallo’s chilling and thought-provoking film.
The first and most obvious one – Gail Bishop played by Regina Hall has gotten her dream job as the first African American headmaster at a small New England college called Ancaster. Then there is the question of the students trying to master their studies, master their personal lives, master their fears. And, of course, in a film about a few Black women struggling to survive in a nearly all-white college – even one with the liberal and intellectual bonafides of Ancaster – the term master has more sinister historical undertones.
The fact is, very little is as it seems in Master. If you simply watch the trailer for the film, you would be excused for thinking that Master was a straight-up horror film. In certain ways it is. It uses many of the trappings of horror – the jump cuts, the eerie music, the dream sequences, the shadowy figures in the dark.
However, Master has a lot more on its agenda than just being a fright flick. The supernatural forces, the strangers lurking in the shadows and the sudden violence mask a more nuanced and thoughtful plan. In fact, it appears many of the horror elements are mostly symbolic. Diallo is using the trappings of a horror film to study the racial discrepancies in a world of monied white privilege, even one which seems to be woke and right-thinking.
Master is sort of like Jordan Peele’s Get Out – minus most of the humorous elements.
It’s a delicate balancing act, one that does not always work, but also one that makes some devastating points of debate.
The film focuses mostly on the parallel unravelling of two Black women in their first semester at the college. (We are only shown four Black people in the film – all women – however, a line of dialogue suggests there are a few others spread out on campus.)
The first one is Bishop – the new master mentioned above – whose dream job is slowly devolving into a nightmare. She is not sleeping. She is hearing strange sounds in the night. She is seeing odd people dressed in pilgrim garb lurking in the dark of campus.
The other is Jasmine (Zoe Renee), a freshman who has been placed in an allegedly “haunted” dorm room. (An earlier Black student had hung herself in the same room years earlier.) She finds herself walking in her sleep, having confrontations with her roommate (Talia Ryder) and her other supposed friends, and being followed around campus by shadowy figures. People are carving the word “Leave” on her door and leaving a noose hung on her doorknob.
She is also having problems as a student for the first time in her academic career. A teacher (a Black professor) gives her a hard time for not finding racial overtones in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter – one of the whitest pieces of literature in American history. This leads to a stand-off with that professor, who is trying to get tenure and is afraid that Jasmine’s complaints may be a blot on her record. However, it seems the professor has deeper secrets and concerns than that.
How much of this is happening, and how much is just their overburdened imaginations running wild? We never really know, and we probably shouldn’t. The film’s ambiguity is one of its powers.
An argument could be made that the horror movie trappings somewhat trivialize the important sociological points the Master is seeming to make, and that would not be completely inaccurate, either. However, Master is a thought-provoking and often chilling film which deserves to be seen.

I think too many people sleep on this video
youtube
Like just...Watch it. It’s perfect.
Lyrics below (taken from Holly Bradbury’s comment on youtube)
Ben: I'm what you want me to be I once had a job it got taken from me. This can't be. I have PTSD.
Josh: Newsies is now a memory I once had fans now they all forgot me. I'm lonely. I miss Angela Grovey.
Both: If only Disney would cast us again all of the damn Newsies should be in Frozen. Unemployed, unemployed we are unemployed.
Josh: I can't dance anymore cause my knees are destroyed.
Ben: And we all have got nodes from singing so high. Both: Unemployed. No job to enjoy. Unemployed.
Josh: At an audition for a new show they ask me my name I say Jojo.
Ben: Get over it.
Josh: No one wants to see my switch split.
Ben: Every time I'm at a deli I steal all of their spoons and start tapping my feet. It's not the same. What happened to our instagram fame?
Both: Messed up bodies, sore throats. We're all in the same boat. Except for David who left and booked Hamilton. Unemployed, unemployed we are unemployed. We are all getting fat cause Newsies is no more. Let us flip, let us tap we need class ASAP. Unemployed, so unemployed. Unemployed.
Josh: Don't let this define you
Ben: I try to forget but Fansies remind you.
Josh: You can try to hide but Newsies will always find you.
Ben: Cause if you won't cast me I'll just do Newsies regionally for the rest of my life until I play Pulitzer and Bunsen Justin hoff please cast us in another show
Both: We are unemployed, unemployed we are unemployed. We need a new show for men who look like boys. Let us sing, let us dance please give us a chance. Unemployed, unemployed, unemployed.

Character Profile: Medda
Real Name: Medda Larkin/ Larkson
Nickname and Meaning: The Swedish Meadowlark (stage name)
Age: Unsure. However, Medda is old enough to securely own her own theater, and young enough to play a flirtatious and lively character on stage. I would put her in her late 20s to mid 30s.
Gender: Medda is always played by a woman.
Family: Unsure. We know for certain that she doesn’t have a husband, as her title is “Miss” and not Ms or Mrs. (Newsies Live script, page 18) However, in the film, she does mention having “some other guy”. (Newsies Film script, page 84)
Medda…:
Is not actually rich. When Medda asks Jack to paint another backdrop, she mentions that “things have been going so well I can actually pay”, implying that she didn’t have enough money to spare to give Jack a fair wage for his time. (Newsies Live script, page 19)
Is selfless, especially when it comes to artists. Jack regularly comes to Medda’s theatre to paint backdrops for the theatre, where she supplies him with the things he needs to work. (Newsies Live script, page 19) However, in order to get good at painting, Jack would have had to make many bad or mediocre paintings as practice. Medda would have had to let Jack use her supplies for free in order for him to get that good.
Is maternal. Medda always makes a point to be nice to the newsies, letting them stay overnight in the theatre, (Newsies Live script, page 19) giving them candy, (Newsies Film script, page 28), encouraging them when they’re scared, (Newsies Live script, page 63) and treating them like her own children. (Newsies Film script, page 83) In turn, the newsies love her like their mother (except for Race, who hits on her.) (Newsies Film script, pages 82, 83, 84)
Is optimistic. Medda knows that life is tough for the newsies. She knows that many of them are orphans or cast out by their families, many of them will always be poor, and some of them might never escape homelessness, but no matter what, she reminds them that better times will come if they just wait for them (and in the mean time, they can always come to her for comfort). (Newsies Film script, page 84)
Is beyond tough. Medda will break the law by harboring fugitives (Newsies Live script, page 18) and verbally assaulting police officers (Newsies Film script, page 90) if she thinks it will keep one of her many newsie children safe. She brings Jack’s drawings of the Refuge right to the governor after Crutchie is arrested- (Newsies Live script, page 74) and that’s not even mentioning that she is a woman, and runs a whole theatre mostly by herself! (Newsies Film script, page 27)
Headcanon Fuel:
What did Medda do before she ran the theatre?
Why does Medda care for the newsies so much?
How did Medda get the money to start up the theatre?
Actors and Physical Appearance:
Helen Anker
Tumblr media
Capathia Jenkins
Tumblr media
Angela Grovey
Tumblr media
Aisha de Haas
Tumblr media
Ann-Margret
Tumblr media
Medda is a curvy woman with big, curly hair and a penchant for pink. She is typically portrayed with darker skin. Although her stage name is the Swedish Meadowlark, she probably isn’t a Swede, as her accent is completely fake. (Newsies Film script, page 27)

Small world
I have a friend on the Waitress tour right now, and he is one of four people I know who knows Angela Grovey. Like obviously, Jacob knows her, so that’s one. My friend Sam knows her because his husband was in the Jimmy Buffett musical with her (they may have known each other before that, I’m not sure). My friend Mike knows her because after she left the Newsies tour and the show opened up to regional theaters, she reprised her role as Medda up in Maine, and he (not surprisingly) played Mike.
I couldn’t figure out how Ryan knew her (Ryan is Cal on the Waitress tour).
So I did some googling.
They’ve known each other for 19 years! They did a production of Little Shop in 1999.

I am in full support of the fact that the funniest line in newsies is when Bunsen says "medda you're on!" and she responds with "oh yeah? how'm I doin'?" typically followed by awkward silence in which medda breaks the fourth wall and throws her hands up saying "tsk, tough room".
