And then they took their horses and rode throughout a fair forest; and then they came to a plain, and saw where were many pavilions and tents, and a fair castle, and there was much smoke and great noise; and when they came near the siege Sir Beaumains espied upon great trees, as he rode, how there hung full goodly armed knights by the neck, and their shields about their necks with their swords, and gilt spurs upon their heels, and so there hung nigh a forty knights shamefully with full rich arms. Then Sir Beaumains abated his countenance and said, What meaneth this? Fair sir, said the damosel, abate not your cheer for all this sight, for ye must courage yourself, or else ye be all shent, for all these knights came hither to this siege to rescue my sister Dame Lionesse, and when the Red Knight of the Red Launds had overcome them, he put them to this shameful death without mercy and pity. And in the same wise he will serve you but if you quit you the better. Le Morte D'Arthur, Book 8 | Thomas Malory

Gareth 🧸🔪 for the ask game if u want=)
🧸Headcanon about childhood
I think Gareth is actually a runaway. He didn’t tell his mother where he was going, he just left. But the journey from Kirkwall to Camelot gives a kid a lot of time to think and Gareth started to make up unfortunate potential outcomes in his head. He went into the kitchens not to try and one-up the competition, but to avoid his brothers seeing him and reporting back to their mother. He’s out of touch and didn’t know how they would react, so his anxiety made a mountain out of a molehill. Beaumains time it is.
🔪Headcanon relating to fighting/violence
While Gareth could technically be considered a protege of Lancelot, he tends to overthink the situation, and initially struggles to reach his full potential as a fighter for this reason. He can’t turn his brain off and get in the zone as easily as Lancelot or Gawain. But when he does, he can’t lose.

|| @toadmiretoweepover lionel vc: nah, kay's got some issues. it's hilarious however that you think that dinadan is sane when he's being friends with tristan and some forgotten knight nobody, so he's off his rocker too.
Tumblr media
"Who doesn't have issues among us, Prince Lionel? And, setting aside Dinadan's terrible taste in friends with Tristan, he's rather sane I must say. If not him then I volunteer Lord Palamedes. I refuse to be the only sane one with all of you boneheads."

Star-gazing
“Sir Gaheris?” A voice Gaheris was uncomfortably re-acquainted with broke the near silence of the night. Gaheris bobbed his head vaguely as Beaumains came to stand beside him. He wouldn’t think of the younger man as Gareth, not yet anyways.
Gareth, in his mind, was still several feet shorter than him and still chubby with baby fat. Gareth was a warm weight against his ribs at night, so long as Father and Mother never heard of it. Gareth was scared of thunderstorms and dark nights and thought cheese grew on trees. If Beaumain’s eyes sparkled the same green they were not as bright, so they couldn’t be the same.
“Is everything all right, sir?”
Gareth would never call him sir. Gareth would ask him questions. Him and Gawain and Aggravain each in turn, until they’d all gotten tired and snapped at him. And then he would ask Gaheris again. Gaheris’s mouth quirked up.
“Quite. I was just stargazing.”
“Oh.” there was a pause while the younger man turned his gaze skyward as well. “Oh.”
Gaheris couldn’t help but chuckle at his brother’s awestruck gasp. His brother.
Gaheris cast a sidelong glance at him. Beaumain’s eyes sparkled as he took in the sight. His hair was tied in a loose ponytail, though so much of it had fallen out it was more down than up. If Gaheris looked closely at his face’s profile, he could see where it followed the same outline as Gareth’s.
Beaumains was taller than Gaheris, with broad shoulders that were sure to impress a number of ladies (and several knights as well). He was confident, self-assured, he was a goddamn hero. As much as Gaheris could see Gareth in him Beaumains felt more like a reflection than the same person.
Or was that just an excuse for not recognising him that whole year? For how the boy who’d been his second half in childhood grew up without him. For leaving him.
Gaheris turned his head sharply as his throat burned and tears welled in his eyes. Beaumains still noticed.
“Are you alright?” he took a step closer before tacking on a “Sir?”
“Quite,” Gaheris heard his voice break. Beaumains hovered while he cried quietly. When Gaheris had collected himself enough to look up Beaumains was still there, fidgeting awkwardly.
He doesn’t know either. Gaheris realized.
“Would you like me to leave, sir?”
The question shattered the momentary silence and Gaheris’s heart in one go.
“No,” Gaheris answered, “No, stay.”
It took no thought, he was certain he wanted Beaumains here. He wanted- he wanted to be brothers again, though he doubted they could ever be the same as they were. They watched the stars till they set. When they came down from the roof and went to their rooms Beaumains truly felt like his brother. Maybe not the Gareth yet, but a Gareth. Someone Gaheris could see Gareth becoming, if he gave the boy in his mind some time.

Gareth and Lynette Sure don't like each other
Its just so fucking funny to me
I dont have my sources rn but i just find it hilarious how fcking mean some people are to gareth
And the fact that Gareth and Lyonesse are so jn love and trying to have that premarital sex but then Lynette (and iirc in some versions, even the other Orkneys) cockblocks them so bad to the point of enchanting an armor to attack Gareth (and he actually gets stabbed in the thigh the two times they try to consumate their premarriage relationship)

You have an oc who’s Sir Gareth’s child? I am intrigued 😮
Aww thank you so much!! I'm glad you're intrigued, because I'm about to ramble about her a little
So, disclaimer-- I'm no King Arthur expert. Far from it, really. I plan to read more of those stories for research soon, but what I've come up with in this universe could make every single Arthurian fan shudder collectively in horror at how I'm abusing the source material. I'm absolutely positive someone will end up feeling that way about my fairy tale retellings at this point, honestly. So feel free to take my thoughts with a grain of salt, and know that I mean no insult to the original stories
(OH and just for the record, this is set in my fairy tale world! I decided King Arthur counts as a fairy tale, so I'm encorporating them into my series. Here's hoping I do it pretty well!)
Anyways! Sir Gareth's daughter is Risha Beaumains. She doesn't spend too much time in the court with her family, but prefers to sail the high seas with her best friend, Jack Archer, as his first mate. Yes, she is a pirate. No, her family doesn't not technically condone this, but they aren't really stopping her, either
She, along with her other best friend Alec, helped start Jack's crew back in the day. When they're hanging out, the three of them have exactly one brain cell between them, and it's anyone's guess who it belongs to at any given moment
I'm pretty excited about her as a character-- I feel like she has the potential to be the kind of character I love. I'm kinda picky about liking female characters a lot of the time, and some of the ones I love the most are ones that are just human, you know? (Elizabeth McCord is a perfect example of this in my mind) My goal is to do that with Risha. And also give her a good sense of humor because that's very important to me
I've only actually written her a little so far, but she's going to have a bigger role in the next book I'm gonna write! I'm looking forward to writing her and her future boyfriend best friend since childhood Alec, they have such a fun dynamic (in my head, anyways)

Sir Beaumains & the Green Knight
Tumblr media
“It may happen,” said Beaumains, “that I may be beaten or slain, but I warn you, fair damsel, I will not flee nor leave your company no matter what you say. You always say that they will slay me or beat me, but it always happens that I escape and they lie on the ground. Therefore, it would be good of you to keep silent instead of rebuking me all day. I shall not go away until I see this journey through to the end, or else I am slain or thoroughly beaten. Therefore, ride on your way; I will follow you, no matter what may happen to me.”
Thus as they rode together they saw a knight come riding toward them. He was all in green—both horse and armor. When he came near to the damsel he asked her, “Is that my brother, the Black Knight who is riding with you?”
“Nay, nay,” she said, “this unhappy kitchen knave has slain your brother through misfortune.”
“Alas!” said the Green Knight. “It is great pity that so noble a knight as he was should be so ignobly slain, and by the hand of a knave, as you say he is! Ah, traitor!” said the Green Knight. “You shall die for killing my brother! He was a full noble knight, and his name was Sir Perard.”
“I defy you,” said Sir Beaumains, “for I will have you know, I slew him knightfully and not shamefully.” With that, the Green Knight rode up to a green horn that was hanging from a thorn tree. He blew three loud notes, and at once two damsels came and quickly armed him. Then he took a great horse, a green shield, and a green spear. He and Beaumains ran together with all their might and broke their spears down to their hands.
Then they drew their swords and gave each other many serious strokes; each of them gravely wounded the other, and in the end, as he was attempting a long-reaching blow, Sir Beaumains struck the side of the Green Knight’s horse with his own, causing it to fall to the earth.
Then the Green Knight quickly moved away from his horse and prepared to continue the fight on foot. Beaumains saw that, so he too dismounted. They rushed together like two mighty champions and fought a long while, so that by the end they were both bleeding heavily.
At that moment the damsel came up and said, “My lord Sir Green Knight, why, for shame, do you stand there fighting so long with this kitchen knave? Alas! It is shame that ever you were made knight to see such a lad be your match, like the weed overgrowing the corn.” At this, the Green Knight was ashamed, and then delivered a mighty stroke that cleaved Beaumains’ shield in two.
When Beaumains saw that his shield was cloven asunder, he was ashamed at that blow and by the words the damsel had said. Then he gave him such a blow upon his helmet that he fell to his knees; suddenly, Beaumains had him groveling on the ground.
Then the Green Knight cried for mercy and yielded to Beaumains, asking him not to slay him. “All is in vain,” said Beaumains. “You shall die unless this damsel that came with me asks me to save your life.” And with that, he unlaced his helmet as if he would slay him.
“Fie upon you, false kitchen knave! I will never ask you to save his life, for I would not be so much in your debt.”
“Then he shall die,” said Beaumains.
“Do not be so quick,” said the damsel, “to slay him, you greasy knave!” “Alas!” said the Green Knight, “do not allow me to die on account of these words. Fair
knight,” said the Green Knight, “save my life and I will forgive you for the death of my brother. I will become your man, and the thirty knights pledged to me shall ever do you service.”
“In the devil’s name!” said the damsel. “How should it be that such a dirty kitchen knave should have the service of you and thirty knights?”
“Sir knight,” said Beaumains, “all this is for nothing unless the damsel speaks to me and asks me to save your life.” At that, he made a move as if to slay him.
“Let be,” said the damsel, “you dirty kitchen knave! Do not slay him, for if you do, you shall repent it.”
“Damsel,” said Beaumains, “your order is my pleasure, and by your commandment only his life shall be saved.” Then he said, “Sir knight with the green arms: I release you at the request of this damsel, for I do not wish to make her angry, and I will do everything as she commands me.” Then the Green Knight kneeled down and did homage to him with his sword.
Then the damsel said, “I am sorry, Sir Green Knight, for the damage done to you and for the death of your brother, the Black Knight, for I have great need of your help: I am sorely afraid to pass through this forest.”
“Nay, do not fear,” said the Green Knight, “for you shall lodge with me tonight, and to- morrow I will help you through the forest.” So they took their horses and rode to his manor, which was nearby. And this damsel continued to rebuke Beaumains, and would not allow him to sit with her. The Green Knight took him and sat with him at a side table.
“Damsel, I think it is a marvel,” said the Green Knight, “that you rebuke this noble knight as you do. I warn you, he is a fully noble man, and I know of no knight who is able to match him. Therefore, you do great wrong when you rebuke him, for he shall perform good service for you. Whoever he says he is, in the end he will prove that he comes from a noble bloodline and the lineage of kings.”
“Fie, fie!” said the damsel. “It is shame for you to speak so worshipfully of him.”
“Truly,” said the Green Knight, “it would be a shame for me to say anything that is not worshipful, for he has proved himself a better knight than I. I have met with many a noble knight in my days, and never have I found a knight who is his match.” So that night they went to rest, and the Green Knight commanded thirty of his knights to secretly watch Beaumains all night to keep him from all treason.
In the morning they arose and heard mass and broke their fast. Then they took their horses and rode on their way, with the Green Knight leading them through the forest. Then the Green Knight said, “My lord, Sir Beaumains, my body and my thirty knights shall al- ways be ready for your summons, late and early, whenever you should call, and we shall go wherever you send us.”
“You say well,” said Sir Beaumains. “When I call upon you, you and your knights must yield to King Arthur if I command you.”
“We shall be ready at all times,” said the Green Knight.

May I have 💝🫂 and 🌟 headcanons for Gareth? He's my favourite~
Hi, sorry for the delay, not all these emojis appear on desktop! So I had to Frankenstein this answer between my computer and my phone lol
💝Headcanon about love language:
This is harder to answer than it should be bc my multi-shipper self likes Gareth with Lyonors and Lynette and some crackships but Gareth sort of mutates to his partner. lol. In a world with wifey Lyonors, I think he likes how calm she is, on the opposite end from Kay and Lynette in regards to his treatment. "Words of Affirmation," so to speak. She reassures him when he’s anxious and strokes his ego when he’s confident. In a world with wifey Lynette, Gareth is more of an "Acts of Service" guy. He performs feats for her to show his affection. In return, she patches him up<3 Now for the crackships, he [redacted]...
🫂Headcanon about friendship:
The thing about Gareth is all his friends are older. Whether by design or subconsciously developing these sorts of relationships, he has situated himself into the "little brother" role that Mordred usurped from him, in a sense. Whether that be friendships with Kay, or Lancelot and his kin, or even his sister-in-laws, he has successfully appointed himself as the youngest around, surrounded by people he can look up to and ask for guidance. High anxiety Gareth is real to me and he needs to be immersed in an environment of people who Know What's Up or at least lead him to believe as much.
🌟Headcanon about desires/wishes:
Gareth does, secretly, wish to be French. Blasphemous, I know. Idolizing Lancelot has gone to his head.

Sir Gareth would survive a horror movie!
He sees a dead man magically get his head reattached so the next guy you tries to murder him he decapitates him and then chops the head up into small pieces and then throws all of those pieces in different directions. He did not need to be told twice.
But this is an ancient tale so there's probably going to be three different things so let's see what absurdity happens next
