One of the most well-studied marine mammals in the world has been secretly harboring a superpower sixth sense. Two captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have now proved to researchers at the University of Rostock and Nuremberg Zoo in Germany that they can reliably sense weak electric fields in the water with their long snouts. The discovery hints at the possibility that some marine mammals really can sniff out the electric currents of small prey buried in the sand. They might even use the skill to sense Earth's magnetic field.

ID#1500 “Crumble” and ID#0279 “Red_Red” frequently visit Bayou Bernard, including the canal that runs right beside IMMS! These two have a long history with our Research Team, and in their most recent sighting, both were seen with new calves! Crumble’s appeared to be less than 5 months old, and Red_Red’s was no more than a week old. Red_Red did an excellent job attempting to keep her new baby hidden from our Research Crew- you can barely see it poking out from behind her in our photographs!

Crumble has plenty of experience raising calves, with at least three successful pregnancies since 2012. On the other hand, this is Red_Red’s first documented calf! Hopefully Crumble is willing to share some of her parenting secrets with her. Dolphin calves don’t sleep in their first month of life, which means their moms can’t rest either!

DOLPHIN MOMS DO 'BABY TALK' WITH THEIR CALVES

Baby talk or Motherese/ Parentese is a speech pattern nearly universal across cultures and languages in human caregivers interacting with children. It is characterized by a higher than usual pitch, exaggerated intonation, repetition, calling attention to objects and use of slow stretchy speeches. What we know about baby talking in other nonhuman species is sparse. Now, researchers have  found evidence for baby talk in bottlenose dolphin, a species that shows parallels to humans in their long-term mother–offspring bonds and lifelong vocal learning. 

Researchers analyzed audios from made wild bottlenose dolphins in waters near Sarasota Bay, Florida, United States, and found that females produced signature whistles with significantly higher maximum frequencies and wider frequency ranges when they were recorded with their own dependent calves.

This finding provide an example of convergent evolution of motherese in nonhuman mammals, and may help us understand how motherese can facilitate vocal learning and bonding in nonhumans as well as humans.

The Brookfield Zoo is such a shining light in the zoo community. Not only do they spearhead a first-of-its-kind study (encompassing 43 zoos, aquariums, and marine parks) investigating what factors actually impact cetacean welfare, they invest $10 million into updating their habitat based on the findings of their study. Their seven dolphins, ranging from 18 to 50 years in age, recently returned home to Brookfield after over a year away while their habitat was renovated. These renovations include:

🌊 "New additions to the dolphins' habitat, including rockwork structures, sand pits for enrichment, built-in bubbler systems, and more!"

🔬 "Upgrades for scientific research, including underwater microphones and overhead camera to study the dolphins"

💡 "Building upgrades, including a new roof, skylights, energy efficient lighting, a new heating and cooling system, and improved accessibility"

🌴 "And a fresh look in the stadium designed to depict the natural environment of Sarasota Bay, Florida."

You can read more about the upgrades here. In a time when so many facilities are throwing in the towel and getting rid of their animals, it's so refreshing to see a place dedicated to optimizing their dolphins' welfare and continuing vital research efforts.

Bottlenose dolphin! They have to come to the surface to breathe every seven minutes or so. Each breath exchanges up to 80% of the air in their lungs, compared with humans’ 17%! They make me think of lisa frank folders, so I went with a fun colorful background. :-)

Common bottlnose dolphin flag! The colors on the flag represent beaches and shallow water where dolphins swim, as they live in the tidal zone. I made the circle within the therian symbol into 3 separate crescent shapes which are supposed to resemble dolphins, especially when they leap out of the ocean.
