Me and flips have not been friends ever since I landed on my head/neck during a double back when I was 18, so of course deciding to finally learn a front flip half twist is going to be good for me. Living by the whole "if I'm scared I'll do it scared" thing now, working out well for me so far.

#technique is dodge lmao #the reason i could do a double back was my upper leg muscles are fn strong & will launch me into heaven even if my run up is absolute shite #but my coach at the time believed in 'if youre scared you don't ever have to do it again' so i just never got over that accident #which is why im almost immediately moving into the flip part instead of going UP first #anyway i literally need to commit to pull my hands into my left shoulder instead of letting them faff about and then I've got the twist #we'll work on the ehrm. *neatness* afterwards lmao

I know it’s easy for people to say oh Isabeau just needs to switch coaches and “fix her jumps” as if it’ll happen in a few months time but if you’ve been here long enough and seen skaters who try and correct their technique it really isn’t as simple.

#like the process of relearning how to do everything in a correct way is already going to take time #and you’ll have to start all over from correcting doubles then to correcting triples #mao asada tried for years to fix her flutz like it really ain’t ass simple as changing coaches and poof your problems are gone #remember when evgenia switched the TCC and it was basically the same technique with minor modifications it takes years #and unfortunately the at the rapid pace womens skaters are churned out people don’t see the benefit of correcting for long term results if- #you’re going to get replaced by someone who is a younger and doing the jumps better #that’s kind of changing now but the culture is still very much that imo #all that being said I still want her to make the switch because she does have the natural talent and skating skills #cheer up bbs #isabeau levito #figure skating #gpf 2023 #Grand Prix Final

One coaching challenge I'm running into is that we have an 11th grader on the team who is incredibly advanced. Like, so far above everyone else's skill level it's unreal. And her goal is to dance at a D1 college, which means that I've been watching technique videos for the last two weeks (and I'm nowhere near done) to try and find anything to help her keep leveling up.

The bright side of this whole experience is that I have run into SO many helpful notes to give my intermediate dancers to make sure they keep progressing, too.

#it feels like i've only got 1 year to make her feel prepared for college auditions even though she's still got 2 more years of high school #like at the dance camp we had last month #the instructors told her they think she could make a team like boise state #which is a HUGE deal because they're incredibly competitive #but like she's so far beyond anyone in the room skill-wise (coach and dancer) that trying to keep her progressing requires so much research #also her ego about the whole thing is so nonexistent so it makes it easy to spend all this time lol #i can tell she feels like she's not progressing though #which means i'm over here frantically googling: advanced stretching techniques and advanced leap technique and back flexibility routines #and how to keep progressing oversplits and ankle strength exercises #she's the sweetest kid i just want her to feel like she's getting something out of this experience #my coaching adventures

exactly 2 months left until my third tournament. i have been preparing as hard as i can since my second one (which was absolutely tragic) and i really want to show my coach and myself that i can do a lot

#fencing tips: set realistic goals #yeah haha lol as if #realistic goal would be to win at least one fight as it hasnt happenes in a tournament yet #what i’d actually love to do is get to the next round #so for now i will continue to improve my technique and in the last month i’ll try winning against all my club mates #especially the two best guys #but friday i will treat like a tournament since we’re exactly in the middle of my two tournaments #i have to give my all and prove that i can be great #not better than SOMEONE but amazing on my own #i have to set goals for each training tbh #and im usually like. my coach is an amazing guy but then there come those rare moments when i realise that he won olympic silver #and very into the fencing elite and im here like #didnt i overstep with treating him like normal human being #and i feel lowkey intimidated and embarassed #but i know he is a very honest and kind person but then i think about that man who knows all famous people and sport people and it feels #very different. like hes a completely different person #so like maybe at first i prove myself until i go too hard on communication

ik i spoke about it in the tags of the isabeau levito post but i really do intensely dislike the way the us fed and coaches are framed against the russians. there’s this idea that the american way of coaching is (morally) better, that the children aren’t exploited or coached in dangerous and unhealthy ways, and it’s very odd to me because surely we can all see that that isn’t for lack of trying? there were strong hints of it with alysa, and its become abundantly clear with isabeau, that the only reason the us system is any better is because they can’t figure out how to emulate the russian one. they want their factory chain of child prodigies, and the only reason they don’t have it is because they don’t know how. 

it pains me so much to see commentators and reporters and some american fans speak about the us system like its the best thing ever and then turn around and criticise sambo 70 like!! the call is coming from inside the house!!

#to make abundantly fucking clear this is not a defense of eteri it is a criticism of BOTH systems #and inspired by isabeau levito's technique being worse than almost all of the eteri girls #if that girl lasts until the olympics i will eat my fucking hat #she skates beautifully but its genuinely hard to watch bc all i can think about is how she will end up like evgenia medvedeva unable to move #like atm yes team tutberidze is worse #but to act like that is because of the morals of the american federation is disingenious #if isabeau proves me wrong ill be delighted!! in fact i hope she does!! #she is very talented #but i worry for her #and i worry for all the us junior girls who will be coached in her footsteps #figure skating #mo rudaí
