Under Siege (1992)
Tumblr media
I haven’t watched all of Steven Seagal’s filmography but I’m nonetheless confident in calling Under Siege his best film. It takes a somewhat familiar formula (it’s Die Hard on a boat) and delivers everything you want to see. There’s a lot of action and thrills, the stakes are high, the bad guys are terrific - so good they easily steal the show.
Aboard the battleship USS Missouri, Executive Officer Commander Krill (Gary Busey) is preparing a surprise party for the captain. No one suspects there's more to it than music and a hot lady busting out of the cake. Actually, it’s a ploy to get William Strannix (Tommy Lee Jones) and his crew aboard so they can commandeer the ship and its nuclear arsenal. With all of the sailors killed or captured, it's up to the cook (Steven Seagal as Casey Ryback) and "Miss July" (Erika Eleniak as Jordan Tate) to save the day.
Unsurprisingly, Steven Seagal is not playing some lowly cook. He’s got special skills; exactly the kind required to take the Missouri back from the terrorists who’ve captured it. Even before we learn his backstory, you believe Ryback is up to the task because the character is smart. He knows he can’t take all of these baddies down on his own/through conventional methods so he finds ways to even the odds. Booby traps, subterfuge, calling for help, freeing some of his shipmates, getting anyone who will be sympathetic to help him and - my favorite - he picks up the weapons of those he defeats. It doesn’t sound like much but it’s what anyone with a brain would do in real life and in the movies, you rarely see anyone pick up a gun, much less pick up a spare so they can arm someone else to help. Though Seagal doesn’t prove himself to be all that charismatic, he handles the stunts well. You believe it when he sends the opposing goons to Davy Jones' locker. There are a lot of great kills in this movie, many of which will make you yell “Damn!” out loud.
I know Seagal has fans, but he's never been able to elevate the material handed to him. Luckily, we're in the hands of Andrew Davis (who made The Fugitive a year after this film) and a great supporting cast. First, there’s Gary Busey as Commander Krill. What a perfect role for him. The second he appears on-screen, you know he'll be an antagonist but then he surprises you by being even more despicable, sociopathic and corrupt than expected. You love to hate him because because you can tell he’s been thinking about this day for a long time, mentally picturing how it would all go down, and the people he was going to kill. You can’t wait for him to get what’s coming and the same goes for Tommy Lee Jones’ William Strannix. Somewhere between the cold, calculating Hans Gruber and the fanatical Egor Korshunov (from Air Force One”, another Die Hard-like action picture) he’s also enjoying this heist a little bit too much but between the jokes he makes at his victims’ expense, he keeps his cool. He recognizes the threat Ryback poses and comes up with counter strategies that keep him - and you - on your toes the whole way through.
Finally, we have Erika Eleniak as "Miss July", who might think is just a pretty face - and a bare chest - to add to the “R” Rating but she contributes A LOT. She’s the avatar for the audience: brought onboard the ship under false circumstances, she is totally in over her head. She realizes her only chance is to stick around with Ryback and yeah… that’s what you’d do too! I’m surprised more films haven't copied this aspect of Under Siege to give the hero someone to bounce off of and help them when they find themselves in a jam there’s seemingly no escaping.
Under Siege is a surprisingly memorable take on the Die Hard formula. I know that sounds like a backward compliment - like it’s only good if you’ve seen Die Hard a thousand times and you want something new - but this picture is solid. It’s a great “dad movie”, something you and the old man could sit through and thoroughly enjoy any day of the week. It makes great use of its location, both villains are memorable, the action is satisfying, Seagall handles the stunts well, and his sidekick is a great new ingredient to spice up the recipe. When you catch it, feel free to stay until the end of the credits to get some bonus facts about the ship upon which the film was shot. (On DVD, February 11, 2022)

304 shrugged, reaching over and taking the cube from her again as he fidgeted through the colors. “Well, those analogies are entirely plausible if rare.” He grinned rather forcibly to himself, saying, “I’m allowed G and PG rated movies. However, nothing higher. They’re boring sometimes, but it’s nice to fall asleep with the feeling of them. Sleep mode, that is.” He lifted his head from the cube he was concentrated on, abruptly asking, “Have you read the files, Madeline? Some agents say it’s easier dealing with me after reading them.”

Personal Project By  Egor Samolyuk
The moment has come. Horrors born beyond times awakened from the graves of Ancient Gods and became free. These twisted abominations of many limbs invaded and devastated cities, villages. And they knew that people will not survive in desert so all that’s left to do is to make lairs near water, grow, multiply… and finally conquer the last city. In the light of the risen Sun, she stood on the road to the Oasis of Life. On the road that once was safe and nowadays overgrown with their filth and corruption. Great kingdoms of Sekdjetet will not die in vain, people of this land will fight and She, Khepri, their queen, will lead them.

Just stunning.
Watch this video from Alexei Navalny, exposing a Moscow Deputy named Alexey Shaposhnikov. In 2018, this man, who had heretofore a declared income of tens of millions, contributed 870 million roubles to a company named “Vash Consulting.” (By the way, the nature of these “consulting services” is vaguely worded).
Despite being questioned about this directly on the radio show of politician Egor Zhukov, Shaposhnikov insisted that “You can treat it as you want”, avoiding the question of where this money came from. When asked whether he would confirm that this money was acquired legally, Shaposhnikov claimed he did not owe any explanations.
When the radio presenter Zhukov asked for an explanation personally, Shaposhnikov’s response was, “No, I don’t owe you any explanations, either.” (English subtitles included). (Watch Zhukov’s facial expression after this comment).
As of today, this public official has an unexplained income of 2 billion roubles, a monumental jump from income on previous asset disclosures. Despite having his job financed by the taxpayer, he considers himself above even the simplest explanation as to how he acquired such money.
A stunning reminder of the rampant corruption in Russia today.

**********************************
Each of us is Zhukov Egor for a reason,
Frightened by Russian Spring
The authorities want to keep him
in prison,
As well as whole country with him.
The world is divided into them and us -
They lead us through prisoners boom
Thieving prosperous class
Of officials and tycoons.
At the first stage - a stab in the stomach,
On the second - corrupted court state brand.
On the third a bunch of angry jailers,
And the title of a convict at the end.
Each of us is Zhukov Egor for a reason,
Chief thief is afraid for his fat ass.
And wants to keep youth in prison
Signing himself a death sentence.

"Golden mean" or a prize that has lost its credibility? Golden Globes handed out in Los Angeles
No host, no stars on the red carpet, no press, and even no live broadcast. Why has the prize lost its former greatness?  https://medium.com/@com548510/golden-mean-or-a-prize-that-has-lost-its-credibility-golden-globes-handed-out-in-los-angeles-6d5eb88c89b8

This year the organizers of "Globus" simply published the list of winners on the official website. They joke in social networks: the next stage is a closed mailing or a chat in a telegram. Cheap and cheerful.
Thunder in the paradise of the Golden Globes thundered a year ago. First, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation into corruption in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which distributes Golden Globes. Then the celebrities were called to include black film critics on the jury. The channels refused to broadcast the ceremony, and the stars began to abandon their figurines.
The Association has promised to improve, has joined its ranks with new, including black journalists. At first glance, the innovation did not greatly affect the results. Still, the Golden Globe and its main winners this time cannot be blamed either for being conservative or blindly following the current agenda, says film critic and Esquire columnist Yegor Moskvitin:
Egor Moskvitin film critic, Esquire columnist Steven Spielberg's West Side Story can be interpreted as a movie about racial conflicts, about national minorities. At the same time, it can be interpreted as an incredibly old-fashioned love story that does not flirt with new trends in the least. Or, for example, the film "The Power of the Dog". On the one hand, yes, this is an LGBTQ + drama about a confrontation between two men, one of whom is aggressive because he is forced to hide his homosexuality. On the other hand, this is such a study of the change of eras, and the point here is definitely not in the identity of the heroes, but in how the director captures how much courage has changed over a hundred years. And this story is much more than what you can think of it. The same is with other nominations. So I think the prizes are very balanced. "
The expected awards went to "The Squid Game" and "The Descendants" - really much talked about TV series. Many are surprised that the political satire "Don't Look Up", which has not left the first line of Netflix popularity for several weeks, was left without awards. However, another project of this streaming platform - "Power of the Dog" became a triumphant. But this jarred many: given that the accusations of the Golden Globe of corruption began precisely on the basis of the relationship between the organizing committee of the award and Netflix.
But they turned away from the Golden Globe even earlier. If he was once considered a harbinger of the Oscar, then in recent years interest in the Oscar itself has fallen - taking into account all the socio-political processes taking place in the cinema environment, from the MeToo movement to the new requirements for the Oscar nominees. So neither Globus nor its laureates are encouraging, says Maria Bezruk, a member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia, journalist:
Maria Bezruk member of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia, journalist “The main award for the film Reign of the Dog, which also won the award for Best Director, to female director Jane Campion, stems from all these socio-political processes. On the one hand, yes, the film won the prize for the best directing in Venice, so what's wrong with the fact that the Golden Globe, for its part, supports the cinema, marked by the largest European festival? On the other hand, one can see in this a certain desire to please the conjuncture. This year's selection was generally limited. Therefore, films such as West Side Story may receive an award for Best Musical or Comedy. I think this is a disgrace, because when it comes to a remake, it's somehow strange for me to discuss an award for the best film in one category or another. But in general it is sad that there is nothing to discuss, by and large. "
Many critics have little faith that the Golden Globe will succeed in reviving. But the prize is unlikely to disappear: the industry needs it so that its representatives understand the context in which they exist and work.

James Norton, star of “War and Peace” and “McMafia,” and Vanessa Kirby, who portrayed Princess Margaret in the first two seasons of “The Crown,” will play intrepid journalists in Agnieszka Holland’s politically charged new film “Gareth Jones.” WestEnd Films is handling international sales.
Norton is being talked about as a potential next James Bond off the back of his star turns in the BBC’s “McMafia” and “War and Peace.” In “Gareth Jones,” which is set in the early 1930s, he plays an ambitious Welsh journalist who travels to Moscow to attempt to interview dictator Joseph Stalin. The film is based on real events.
In Russia, Jones meets New York Times reporter Ada Brooks, played by Kirby, who is soon to be seen in “Mission: Impossible 6 — Fallout.” Brooks clues Jones in to Russian government oppression and, after a clandestine trip to Ukraine, he writes about it, but then has to fight for the truth in the face of propaganda, denials and cover-ups. As he tries to tell the story, he meets a young George Orwell and shares his findings, in turn influencing the author’s classic novel “Animal Farm.”
“The script joins, in a very artistic and original way, a few issues from the 20th century which seem particularly valid today,” Holland said. “George Orwell’s famous novel, ‘Animal Farm,’ links everything together: It reveals the mechanisms of totalitarian falsehood, and the terror that can be fought only by resistance to deception and violence.”
For Norton, it is another project with Russian connections after he played a British-educated banker from a Russian crime family in “McMafia.” “Gareth Jones” will shoot in Poland, Ukraine and Britain, with principal photography to begin Feb. 26. WestEnd will begin worldwide sales at the European Film Market, and is co-repping the film in the U.S. with WME.
Holland was Oscar-nominated for “Europa, Europa,” which dealt with Nazi Germany. She said that “Gareth Jones” has themes that remain relevant: “Nobody wanted to shed light on Stalin’s atrocities, which Gareth exposed. Today, we don’t lack corruptible conformists and egoists; we lack Orwells and Joneses. That is why we should bring them back to life.”
The film is produced by Andrea Serdaru-Barbul, who also wrote the script, alongside Polish filmmaker Klaudia Smieja, Stanislaw Dziedzic of Film Produkcja, Angus Lamont of Crab Apple Films, and Ukrainian producer Egor Olesov of Kinorob. It was supported by the Polish Film Institute and the Ukrainian State Film Agency.

Figured out what to call the corrupted!Egore au! Deus Ex Machina Au.

((I made another au. Egore as a corrupted demon. He doesn’t go by Egore, rather 304, based off the serial number he was given upon being imprisoned/captured. He’s held at rank B or A priority if he were to escape, mostly because he can barely do anything without his desktop. He shuts down like a computer when the desktop is shut down but it’s slightly unpleasant waking up.
He’s a S rank corrupted due to his cognizance, however he’s surprisingly polite. 304 has metallic knuckles replacing his old ones when he started having issues with arthritis and an electronic processor built into his brain to increase his memory and ability to retain information. He has one mechanical ear and eye to replace the others after an accident with installing the processor.
He was taken from an abandoned facility, most corpses of the workers seemingly mutilated. It’s hypothesized that 304 was originally captured but soon became the jailer rather than the jailed.
He hasn’t confirmed anything yet.

PDP faults suspension of Edo council chairmen
Tumblr media
The PDP has criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State for removing four council chairmen elected on the platform of the APC from office. The four council chairmen were removed from office between August 2 and October 10 this year. The Chairman of the PDP in Edo, Dan Orbih, said it was wrong and unconstitutional for the governor to remove anyone constitutionally elected by the people from office. Mr Orbih was speaking on Wednesday in Benin after receiving an award bestowed on him by the Edo State Chapter of the Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP). Represented by the Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Edo, Chris Nehikhare, Mr Orbih said it was disheartening and a rape of democracy for a democratically elected governor to remove an equally democratically elected Local Government Council chairman. The party stalwart was referring to the recent suspension of the council chairmen in Edo by the governor. All of the removed chairmen were elected on the platform of the ruling APC. The suspended council chairmen are Aremiyau Momih of Etsako East, Yakson Musa of Etsako West, Eghe Ogbemudia of Egor and Patrick Aguinede of Esan West. READ ALSO: BAYELSA GOVERNORSHIP: DICKSON DIDN’T REJECT JONATHAN’S ADVICE – OFFICIAL It will be recalled that Mr Obaseki has similarly sacked secretaries in the four councils, citing corruption and abuse of office by the sacked officials. Mr Orbih, however, cautioned the governor to reverse the sacking, arguing that removing elected officials by another elected official was undemocratic and ultra vires. “These chairmen were not appointed by the governor but were elected by the people in their respective council areas. The governor knows very well that for any action to be taken against the chairmen, such action must emanate from the Edo State House of Assembly after due investigation. “But the present action of the governor certainly points towards a fallout of the political differences between him and his predecessor. “They should not allow their internal crisis or differences to affect the people of Edo State.” The PDP chief also called on the governor to appreciate the fact that the Local Government system was recognised by the Nigerian Constitution. Mr Orbih advised the governor to also desist from interfering in the financial independence of the councils and allow the chairmen to discharge the duties for which they were elected. The Chairmen of the CRPP in Edo, Samson Isibor, described people considered for the award as people who had distinguished themselves in their chosen fields of endeavour. He said the award was given to Mr Orbih in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of democratic values through constructive criticisms and fighting executive corruption. Alrighty, sorry if I sounded impatient, just a bit too paranoid for my own good. Take the time that you need. A bit nerve racked about these pics but if you need an explanation for the bottom one, it's just this stupid au I made exploring the idea if the happy haunts were corrupted and what they would look like. Sorry about the semi-messy lineart but here you are. :) -Anon M
(That's wonderful! I love your style. Thank you so much for drawing this! I'm flattered that you drew Tommy and I like Egore very much ^_^ What ideas did you have for how and why they were corrupted?)
