Celebrating the Heritage of Our National Parks in Capitol Reef National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While hiking the Chimney Rock Trail with a view looking to the west to the namesake formation in Capitol Reef National Park. I used the high ground I was on to look down on it and perhaps create more of a sense of grandeur.

What To Expect When Fetch-Questing
A silly totk fic for Linktober 2023 Day 9 prompt: Deity. 2000 words.
Link sped up the steps, damp but no longer dripping from his hail-hylia plunge into the lake beside the plateau’s Temple of Time.  He’d prayed incessantly to hit the water right (and not break his neck) and not hit lake-bottom (and once again not break his neck).  One mostly injury-free neck later, here he was planning to pray yet again.
He’d planned to sprint all the way to the Goddess Statue’s feet, too, but all at once his stamina gave out; he gripped his side, panting, forced to a measly jog.  This curse had to go.
He lurched toward Hylia’s likeness in a much less dignified manner than he’d have liked.  She still smiled at him.
Well.  She was a rock, so that was to be expected.
“Goddess Hylia,“ he panted with his final step, “I’m sorry to ask so much- my strength got cursed right out of me, and-“
A sound issued like the echoing moan of deep water in a cavernous dark.
Link stood silenced.
The echo coalesced into a voice- distant and vague.  “I am trapped…”
The Goddess?  Trapped?
“Under the water…”
“…Uhh-“
“Behind the stone gate…”
Link spun around despite knowing there were, in fact, no gates anywhere near him.  “What gate?”
“Of the great plateau…”
Link made a face.
The echoes faded.
“You can’t possibly mean the gate damming the plateau’s entrance.”
A bird twittered somewhere in the rafters.
“You’re… Hylia.  You can’t get trapped in a flooded staircase. Right?”
Link stared at the statue’s cheery face.
“You are not stuck in a staircase.”
He folded his arms.
“This is silly.”
He unfolded his arms.
“It’s a test, isn’t it?”  He ran a hand down his face.  Of course it was a test.  This was Hylia.  He didn’t have any mummified-monk spirits with him this time, did he?  Maybe she wanted to see if he still had what it took to be the hero of Hyrule.  After all, maybe she could zap someone else’s endurance up a few thousand percent.  Didn’t have to be him, did it?
He rolled his shoulders and walked out at a brisk pace.  No time to lose.  He could run a staircase-cleansing errand for the Goddess.  Maybe she wanted it to be easier for people to visit the temple again.
Yeah, that was probably it.
---
Link did a little more praying at the gate and a lot of kicking himself for not blowing it up when he still had all those remote bombs.
He did… HAVE some bombs.  They were a lot scarier and trickier than the Sheikah ones.
Link prayed some more.
---
Four time-bombs and one singed toga later, Link’s sandaled feet spattered him with muddy water step after step in the long, water-logged slope back up to the plateau’s great height.  Hylia sure didn’t seem to be there.  Neither did the original steps.  Most of the fish had ended up on the road at the foot of the Forest of Time.  Plenty of rocks, though.
One such rock had an odd, pointed shape.  Its large size became more obvious as Link approached, as did the carvings of four eyes, a mouth, and a pattern—a beard, maybe?—in its surface.  Link slowed, wondering.
“You who hear my voice.”
“H- FFF-?” Link snapped to a fighting stance, arms and legs spread wide, ready to grapple, draw, or strike.
“Come to me…”
That was not the right voice.
“In the Temple of Time Ruins… “
“You’re in the temple?”
“Up the road on the plateau to the south…”
“Yeah, I know where it is, thanks,” Link said as he broke into yet another sprint.
What had he done?
---
He had stitches in both his sides when he returned to the temple statue’s feet.
“You who hear my voice.”
Oh no.
“As a result of you draining the water from the gate, a part of me has been freed.”
Oh NO.
“You have earned my gratitude.”
He’d screwed up and screwed up big.  What was the matter with him?  Of course Hylia wasn’t stuck in some hundred-year-old flood!  She was the Goddess, and at the utterly-most-minimal-absolute-least she could swim.  He hadn’t done an errand for her.  He’d helped some statue-stealing trickster.
“I speak to you now from the Depths below in the guise of this statue…”
Link’s eyes went wide.  “You speak from the what?”
“You who hear my voice.”
“Nooo no no, we covered that part-“
“I direct you to the four chasms across this plateau.”
“…Let me guess.  The horrible, seething red pits?”
“Each has one of my eyes nearby.”
“Because of course it- your EYES?”
“Drop them into the chasms.”
“You want me to chuck your EYES into chasms?!”
“Then deliver the stones to me, who dwells in the Depths below this temple.”
“To I who dwell. Or- wait-”
“Do all of this and a reward will be yours.”
“No no, it’s ‘to me, I who dwell’ – yeah, that’s it.  I think.  It’s confusing. Oh- wait, unless ‘Who Dwells in the Depths Below this Temple’ is your name.  That could be your name.  Is that your name?  Like, you’re nameless but that describes you so you call yourself that?”
Link sniffed.
He shifted from foot to foot.
He almost rolled his eyes.
“Eh.  You don’t care, do you?”
Wind ruffled Link’s bangs.
“Yeah, I don’t care, either, I guess.  About your eyes, I mean.  You hijacked a Goddess statue!  An effigy of Hylia, herself!   You think I’ll just fetch your eyes and jump down some glowing meat-holes in the ground to deliver them to you?  What am I supposed to do, stick them in your face?  That doesn’t work.  Someone loses an eye, you can’t just pop it back in.  Well, you can.  But it isn’t helpful.”
And whether Link’s eye-fetching quest would be helpful was hardly the point.
“What I’m- trying to say is you’re clearly not to be trusted.  I’d have to be a complete idiot to do this.”
Link’s pronouncement made no obvious impression.
Which… he should’ve expected for a rock.
He sighed.
“Not doing it,” Link said.  He turned and stalked out, determined to find himself a horse.
---
Link tossed and turned in a bed beneath Lookout Landing.
Stupid statue.
Stupid statues.  The horned one AND the faker in the Temple of Time.
They could both rot.
---
Link stared at the ceiling in New Serenne stable trying to listen to the frogs and crickets.
He kept picturing some random old lady poking a big eyeball with a stick.
“You who hear my voice,” it would say with a squelch.
She’d hop into the pit with it in her arms like a wet stuffie.
Link rolled his eyes at himself.
---
His reward would totally be to get eaten, right?
Right.
---
“I can no longer sense the mother statue in the temple,” the statue at the Spring of Courage said.
Link blanched.
It was spreading.
---
Link found the eye within an actual stone’s throw of the chasm closest to the four-eyed rock which had spoken at the plateau’s entrance.  He should’ve seen that coming.
He also shouldn’t have taken things quite so literally.
Eyes made of stone were much less disturbing than giant, living eyeballs.  He’d take it.
…He still didn’t want to touch it.
He ultrahanded it into the pit, took a deep breath, and jumped in after it with yet another prayer to Hylia.  He liked his new pants and had no desire to see them ruined.
---
The eye slid into place with a distinctive hum and a flash of light, leaving no trace of a seam.
“You have returned 1 of my eyes to me thus far.”
“You surprised?  I am.”
“After you have found my eyes on the plateau above, each of them near a chasm… bring every last one here to me.”
Not ominous at all.
Link exited the abandoned structure the steward constructs insisted was a mine.  It didn’t seem very mine-like to Link.  It did seem creepy.  And he did feel crazy for putting eyes in the face of a hundred-foot-tall statue which so obviously was going to try and swat him like a fly the instant he did the fourth one.
---
“You have returned 2 of my eyes to me thus far.”
“Thanks for keeping count.”
“After you have found my eyes on the plateau above-“
“You already…”
“-each of them near a chasm…”
“…covered… that…”
“Bring every last one here to me.”
Link tamped a shrug and walked out.
---
“You have returned 3 of my eyes to me-“
“Are you-“
“-thus far.”
“-kidding me?”
“After you have found-“
“Look, dubious colossus-“
“-my eyes on the plateau above-“
“I can see how may eye holes are left!”
“-each of them near a chasm…”
Link’s shoulders slumped.
“Bring every last one here to me.”
One of his eyebrows rose like molasses flowing backward.  “Got it.  I see a hole, I fill it.”
He made it most of the way over the bridge before cringing.
---
The fourth eye hummed and Link braced himself, tensing as all four eyes burst with blue light in the same instant.
This was it.
He could see the statue’s giant arms in his peripheral vision.  He’d have warning if they tried to give him the old bug-squish.  His heartbeat rushed in his ears.
“You have returned to me my eyes, the vessels of my spirit.”
Link’s sword-hand gave a slight twitch.
“We can now speak properly.”
Link blinked.  “Speak…?”
“In ancient times, my eyes were stolen and sealed away.”
Laying around on the ground in plain sight didn’t seem very ‘sealed’ to Link, but what did he know?
“For eons, I have awaited one who would hear my voice and return them to me… And here you are.”
Yep, here he was: shark-bait.
“As promised, I will repay your kindness by bestowing good fortune upon you.”
Okay—this was it.  It was about to say, ‘I’ll make your death merciful’ or ‘You’ll have the honor of being my first meal since Rauru imprisoned me here’ or something like that.
“What do you desire?”
Link waited.
Nothing moved (except him—he was breathing, of course).
That sound of the blood in his ears seemed to echo throughout the truly massive chamber dedicated to this statue.  It was every bit as tall if not taller than the great statue of Hylia in the Forgotten Temple.
Link heard the forge construct beep somewhere far above him.
He shouldn’t relax.  The moment he did, it might strike.
“What do you desire?” it asked.
Link blinked.  “…What are my options?”
“I sensed you approached my counterpart with a desire in mind.”
…He had.
“I have the power to restore some of your body’s vigor.  Do you wish for more resilience against harm?  Or perhaps you prefer to improve your body’s ability to exert effort.”
Link shook his head, still eyeing those two utterly unmoving stone shoulders.  “You can just… do that?”
“Yes.  What do you desire?”
Link shifted his gaze to each of those four eyes in turn.
He had to say something.
It was either say something or walk out.
He thought of his abortive run up the temple’s steps.
“I desire more stamina.”
“The strength that you have chosen will be yours.”
A light washed over him, and as it filled him—and as it scoured some of the evil magic from his body, visible as red and black tendrils evaporating from him—he relaxed a fraction.
“Your wish is granted.”
Link stared at the statue, nonplussed.  “I expected you to be evil,” he said.
“Good… Evil… That’s the futile perspective of narrow-minded beings… There is no such distinction in wandering spirits.  Visit me again when you have an abundance of them.”
---
Epilogue:
“What do you mean you can give my old tunic back?  How did you get it?!”

Top 5 archaeological sites in your province
Well, I hope everybody's settled in for an illustrated archaeology infodump, because this one got long...
But thanks for asking, this was fun to put together.
1. Tse'k'wa (Charlie Lake Cave)
Partly because I worked there as a field school TA. Also because it's one of The Coolest sites. Look up the raven burials, they're incredible. Basically it's a rock shelter overlooking a filled in ravine used by Clovis-ish peoples moving north through the ice-free corridor 12,000 years ago. Our work there was looking at the top of the hill above, where the activity might be more recent. This is the home of the northernmost Clovis point in existence, among many other cool artefacts.
Tumblr media
It's a very cool place, and you can usually visit if you call ahead and use the driveway instead of the unauthorised path up the bank.
2. Keatley Creek
This site might be the closest thing to a precontact interior plateau city we'll ever find. The house pits are so close together they almost overlap in places. A community this size was possible because of Keatley Creek's prime location on the Fraser salmon run and the nephrite jade celt industry across BC (think like axe blades and chisels, etc.) that they supplied with top quality material. A disaster that impacted the salmon run is probably why the site was abandoned, but they left behind lots of evidence of the good times for us to find.
Here's the site in modern times courtesy of Simon Fraser University:
Tumblr media
And this is the inside of a modern reconstruction Lillooet pithouse like the ones those depressions used to be:
Tumblr media
3. Hagwilget Canyon
There hasn't been a ton of work done on this site, but oral histories document it as a key trade hub in precontact BC. People from all over the northwest would come to the canyon to trade and socialise annually. And, with all those people moving through, you needed proper infrastructure, such as:
Tumblr media
The first (and best, if you ask me) Hagwilget Canyon Bridge.
And here's the new one, in case you need context for how massive a crossing this really was:
Tumblr media
This thing was built before white people arrived, from natural materials, and stuck around for generations. It was an incredible feat of engineering, and I'm so glad somebody thought to get pictures.
4. Kilgii Gwaay (Haida Gwaii)
This is a cool site for a bunch of reasons. It's about 10,000 years old. It was occupied before cedar was well established on BC's coast. It was only occupied for about 50 years. It's a wet site with amazing preservation. It's been under the ocean for most of its history.
Once upon a time there were people who lived on a nice little patch of shore between a pond and the sea. They fished in the ocean and hunted bears and drove wooden posts into the ground to make their homes and drying racks. They made stone tools. And then the water came up, slow but unrelenting, and made them leave. The grandparents who held little kids hands as they walked away were probably the people who had first picked this place as a home. Everything we know about them came from the short time they lived there and the things they left behind.
And then the water covered it, and kept bones and tools and wood stakes safe for ten millennia. Only luck and climate and geology working together made it possible for us to find it again. It's like a tiny, perfect Atlantis. I wonder how many generations after heard stories about the village the sea took back.
5. Vancouver Island Petroglyphs
Had to have at least one hometown hit on this list, right? There's rock art all over the place in BC, but some of the ones on the Island are phenomenal. They're pictures carved into rock faces, sometimes flat, sometimes vertical. They tend to heavily feature mythical creatures.
Here's some from Petroglyph Park near Nanaimo:
Tumblr media
I like the chalk additions. You can't really damage carvings ground into bedrock and exposed to the elements for hundreds of years with sidewalk chalk, so why not let kids be kids?
This is the petroglyph wall at Sproat Lake Park:
Tumblr media
There's a dock set up in front of the wall to view the pictures. They must have been very cool to see from a canoe before the dock went in. Here's a close-up of some of the creatures:
Tumblr media
And here's a really big seal near Sooke, BC. Haven't seen this one personally, but it looks amazing:

The Many Heroes of Valentine’s Day
Would you like to have dinner amongst the floating isles of the sky? Or paraglide amongst the rolling hills of the wild? How about being serenaded beneath the setting sun of Lake Hylia? If none of that tickles your fancy, you could always go skinny dipping beneath the silent moon of Ordon Spring.
<3 This is an older headcanon series I did on my Wattpad that I am sharing now. Before I post I want to mention while the words are my own, the artwork used is not. For your visual pleasure, all artwork can be found by the very talented WrenLink here on Tumblr. Below is a link for all inquiries about artwork.

***SUPPORT OUR ARTISTS*** AS THEY MAKE US PRETTY THINGS :)🧑‍🎨👨‍🎨👩‍🎨
Without further ado...are you ready to go on a date with our favorite fairy boi? Select your hero and select your adventure: Let’s GO ⚔️🛡️
               The Hero of the Skies
<3 It's February 14th on Skyloft and you've selected the Hero of the Skies as your date.
-The Hopeless Romantic
-Obviously he'd give you a tour of the skies, snuggled up close to him on his crimson loft wing.
-Or the surface, he wouldn't care so as long as he was spending time with you.
-Being the hopeless romantic that he is, this man is all candlelit dinners with astounding views of the skies and breezy trysts in between.
-Maybe you can check out Bamboo Island and practice slicing up some bamboo...
-While he's behind you with his arms wrapped around you.
-And his hands firmly guiding you as you slice your sword downward.
-At this point you aren't paying attention to slicing bamboo anymore.
-Or maybe it's not that particular bamboo you're paying attention to...
-Sky would be the pull out your chair at the table for you type.
-Of course, he'd eagerly wait for you to take the first bite.
-Speaking of first bite, how would dinner at the cozy Lumpy Pumpkin sound?
-You'd then venture over to the secluded Isle of Songs
-Alone at last, he'd nuzzle his face into yours
-Where his lashes would flutter into yours like the feathers of his loft wing
-And he'd shower you with eskimo kisses
-Don't be fooled by all these displays of romance
-After all, Sky is the only hero with a whip.
-You do the math
-Sky would then whisper with a faint breath into your lips "would you do me the honor of being my valentine?"
-If Sky were a Valentine's candy, he'd be a conversation heart.
-For this gentle hero has no problem with verbalizing what it is he feels within the bowels of his heart.
Tumblr media
                   The Hero of Wild
<3 It's February 14th on the Great Plateau and you've selected the Hero of Wild as your date.
- The Spontaneous Flirt
-The Hero of Wild is up for anything and I mean anything.
-Dates with Wild would be a blissful whirlwind of surprises.
-I recommend packing some comfortable clothing, as this guy loves the great outdoors.
-Fishing, hiking, horseback riding, Wild is down to do it all.
-You know what else he loves? A partner with fire and spunk.
-Despite his adventurous demeanor, Wild isn't as brave when it comes to starting a conversation.
-Though he would be a fantastic listener.
-The wilderness can be quite perilous. Wild would protect you at all times.
-You would be bound to his hardened body as you paraglide across the Great Plateau.
-Of course, this is merely to catch the stunning views of the Necludas
-It's definitely not to hold onto him oh so tight, oh no.
-He isn't called the "Hero of Wild" for nothing. One moment you may be infiltrating Gerudo Town in matching outfits.
-The next you're holding hands amongst the dazzling sands of Lurelin Village.
- Speaking of matching outfits, Wild has quite an impressive array of outfits in his wardrobe.
-Role playing would be a serious turn on for him.
-This boy isn't all mountains and sea. In fact, he loves to settle down beneath the stars with a fresh cooked meal.
-Which he'll cook and do an excellent job at. Each bite will be more tantalizing and luscious than the next.
-Speaking of luscious, let's discuss his kisses, shall we?
-While role playing would break Wild out of his timidity, he still is, within his core, a shy boy.
-He is a big fan of innocent forehead kisses. That way he can mask the crawling blush that's worked itself up to his ears.
-He also wouldn't mind feeding you bites of the delectable food concoctions he's created.
-There aren't napkins in the wild. But never fear, he'll just use his tongue to clean up the mess.
-If Wild were a Valentine's candy, well, he wouldn't be a candy but a succulent strawberry.
-For this hero has no problem showing you everything nature has to offer, himself included.
Tumblr media
                        The Hero of Time
<3 It's February 14th across the sweeping fields of Hyrule and you've selected the Hero of Time as your date.
-The Chivalrous Lover
-Let me start off by saying Time will come across as very guarded.
-But just like the drawbridge to Hyrule Castle Town, it is something momentous once he lowers his guard.
-Manners and respect are of the utmost importance to this hero. This is a man who will always make sure he walks on the side of the street, while you are securely beside him on the curb.
-Beyond his reticent exterior is the wondrous heart of a child lying within.
-Yes, Time would have no problem playing games in Castle Town or Kakariko and winning you prizes.
-That heart piece you want from bomb chu bowling? Yours.
- That heart piece you want from the horseback archery in Gerudo desert? Yours.
-His heart? Yours.
-This is a man who wants to show you Hyrule through his eyes.
-What you weren't expecting was the double visions of Hyrule in which you will become acquainted. The Hyrule of his childhood and the Hyrule of present.
-He may wish to show you the Kokiri forest where he grew up.
-Only to whisk you to Lake Hylia where you can catch the setting sun and he can serenade you with the many tunes he knows on his ocarina.
-Speaking of Lake Hylia, did I mention how secluded it is?
-You see, seclusion is very important for Time.
-This is a hero who has no kink, he simply wishes to merge himself body, mind and soul with his beloved.
- Time would like nothing more than to get lost in the depth of your eyes before claiming your lips in between his own.
-If the Hero of Time were a Valentine's candy, he'd be a traditional box of chocolates.
- For this hero knows all too well how heartless time can be as it trickles away. And so, much like the ageless box of chocolate, Time would like a love that is timeless. A love that will last forevermore and where time has no prevalence.
Tumblr media
               The Hero of Twilight
<3 It's February 14th in Ordon Village and you've selected the Hero of Twilight as your date.
-The Mercurial Paramour
-The Hero of Twilight is a little bit complex.
-He may not say much verbally, but he'll say plenty with his very expressive face.
-At first glance, Twilight may seem very simple. He is but a ranch hand to his friend Fado.
-He may make this seem like work, but secretly this hero is a big softie when it comes to animals.
-He would love to show you his cat collection or the many dogs that cohabitate in his village.
-He may not show you the goats he herds, he does have an image to upkeep after all.
-Twilight could dash you across the many locales of Hyrule but he'd prefer to show you the cozy magic of Ordon Village.
-He has a quant abode where he would happily cook you a romantic dinner.
-Still wanting to venture out into Hyrule? Not after a moonlit jaunt to Ordon Spring.
-This is where Twilight's dull rancher facade will shatter.
-Don't be bashful if he suggests some skinny dipping.
-Do you think he wore that flimsy rancher outfit for work? No, no more like he was working at showing you his biceps and all the things his muscle could do to you if you let him.
-Something about the dark side of the moon transforms this man.
-He's got you alone and right where he wants you. Hopefully you won't mind a little nibbling and biting.
-A little will turn into a lot as you'll find Twilight forgo every last shred of control he may have had.
-It won't be long before you understand why this hero was chosen to be transformed into a wolf.
-And quite frankly, you'll also find you don't mind.
-If the Hero of Twilight were a Valentine's candy, he'd be a cinnamon heart.
-For this hero will melt you with his sweet exterior, surprising you with the taste of his masterfully hidden spice that will linger on your lips. And leaving you in desperate need of more.
Tumblr media
             The Warrior of Hyrule
<3 It's February 14th at Hyrule Castle and you've selected Link, a warrior of Hyrule as your date.
-Love's cynic
- The most impenetrable of all versions of the hero.
- Takes his knight training and his allegiance to the Hylian royal guard, very, very seriously.
- You know what else he takes seriously? His devotion to you.
- This warrior may come off as pompous, but only because he feels he has much to prove.
- In fact, this relentless ambition he possesses is rooted in deep insecurity.
- He secretly wants a partner that can see through him, that can reassure him that he is enough.
- He wants someone who will choose him and only him.
-He may not be able to fly you above the clouds, glide you beyond the mountains, transport you through time or realms; but he can offer you something just as priceless.
- This warrior will fight all your battles with you, and if he can, for you.
-Speaking of fighting, he has the most raw physical strength out of any of the heroes.
- He may be confined to Hyrule Castle but, he has no problem sneaking you into his room. Where he can demonstrate just how strong he is.
- Do you think your endurance can match that of Hyrule's greatest warrior?
- This hero isn't about rough love making. Though he would never reject a request or challenge to prove his sexual prowess.
- He would much rather strip you raw with his gaze, letting your fingers linger over the heavy beating of his secretly fragile heart.
- This warrior wants to see you beg.
- Hyrule Warriors Link would not be a Valentine's candy, he would be the deceiving decadence of red velvet cake.
-For this warrior, looks are deceiving. But what he feels in the core of his heart is not.

It used to be a lake.
The Sheriff found it hard to imagine. His humble town, built in a giant hole, an extension of Tumble Town that had evolved into the bustling center as opposed to the part outside of the plateau. Drier than dry and arid, where even the littlest amount of rain is welcomed and celebrated.
It used to be a lake, the local archaeologist told him when he started poking holes in the sand. The Sheriff had come over to make sure Pix had the right permits to dig around. Apparently, he did, so The Sheriff could not deny him access to the premises of Tumble Town. That didn't mean he couldn't keep a close eye when Pix dug up the past. The Sheriff watched carefully and, eventually, curiosity took the better of him.
"It used to be a lake," Pix explained. Though he specialized in ruins and ancient architecture, he could tell The Sheriff about the region. The pit in which a part of Tumble Town was built was once a lake, the waterline possibly reaching as high as the edge. On top of the plateau was no arid wasteland, but lush meadows and green grasses teeming with all sorts of wildlife and possible settlements dotting the landscape.
Then the oceans receded and the water level was permanently lowered across the world. A known example was the Great Bridge sticking out far above the Central Lake. The lake had no connection to the ocean and wouldn’t have been emptied like that, though it could have dried up afterward until nothing but the sediment was left.
"Do you think your ancient capital came all the way here?" The Sheriff asked.
“It's always possible," Pixlriffs said. They might have used this lake as a place to fish, and the area was big enough that if they fished responsibly, it would be a good supplement to their diet. And, though it was quite unlikely, some fishing boats may have sunk one way or another, their pieces drifting to the bottom  of the lake, stuck in the sediment and covered over the years.
The Sheriff had laughed at him. He may not be as knowledgeable about the past, but he was sure that Tumble Town wasn’t built on what was once the bottom of a great lake. He allowed the archaeologist to dig around - provided he covered the holes again when he was done - and returned to his duties.
Later that evening, Pixlriffs showed him rusted materials that obviously looked like they were used on a fishing boat.
It used to be a lake and The Sheriff could no longer deny it, his world having been turned upside down.

Floating the Yakima
My cousin and her husband are visiting this week so Beth arranged a 12 mile guided float down the Yakima. We’ve taken guided fishing trips on the Yakima before but this time it was fun to just relax and float by the beautiful scenery. The weather was sunny but cool.
Despite the lack of rain, the river was high due to high demand for agricultural irrigation. Several dammed lakes are managed to provide the necessary water. The dams feed water from the bottom of the lakes, so the water is cold and comfortable for the trout and salmon.
The trip starts where the Yakima passes through conifer forests near our house but then moves to the semi arid plateau, cutting through the igneous rock formations until it eventually joins the Columbia.

there are those who live faraway
by the hill, plateau,or both
where lines of river are yet streams
And those of the forest tribes
with the lakes no larger than ponds...
Even these know the occasional hazards...
those strong winds and boats capsizing.
These know no sudden storms
like the broad rivers of the distributaries
These like freshets, open into the sea, and ocean, which is why...
There are myths around the turbulence
The fierce winds that seek the rivers
Mamiwater; the river goddess...
She takes whom she loves
in the middle of a storm...
which she had herself started
with the beats of her mighty,fish-tail,beautified
with a myriad of flashing- mirrors
like one experiences at midday, when the sun
rides,the surface,of a flowing stream.
You never know
which maiden had been converted,
you suspect, the retreating shape
of the supple body, which walks,as if floating away, like a fevered river,in a storm,
the glutes, like a full load of passengers,
now tossed about,in a stormy-sea.
She makes them rich whom she will, the myth says,
afterwards, because, it's her spirit, they worship...
the early morning bath...
now parading the fairly, wide, compound, covered in just a loin-cloth, loosely wrapped
around the wet body,
plump,and supple,
The glutes,convert into harmonies
in 1/2 beats... echoing from the slippered feet.
But, it's just cousins and nieces ...
what if they have the water spirit, Mamiwater?

Disney Dreamlight Valley - Thoughts
It's like staring into a portal into an alternate dimension where Disney and fucking Gameloft are actually design-conscious devs in their own right, and will somehow package the Most Corporate Shit Ever with the single strongest distillation of the Life Sim formula I've seen yet.
I'm shocked, seriously. The premium elements are strictly cosmetic, the required commitment is minimal and none of the Valley's inhabitants adhere to a schedule that hampers your progression. Goofy's downed something like sixteen Adderall and cannot stop pacing up and down the central plaza, when he isn't stuck in a stumbling loop while fishing in one of the meadow's three lakes. The last I spoke with him, his shop was open and fully available by 3 AM.
Everything's accessible. Nothing's gated, except what should be gated in the context of a Life Sim, to induce a sense of progression. You've unlocked pathing tiles for the Village? You're free to cover the entire plateau in cobblestones, if that's what you want.
What the actual fuck. Coming out of Gameloft, devs who consistently paywall parts of their offered content, this feels like a Twilight Zone episode in its most positive form.
I mean - Yes, the quest-givers don't shut up and pester you for a constant downpour of menial shit that supposedly ties into reviving the Valley, but that's only if you do decide to interact with them. If you don't, you're free to spend entire days tweaking the Village's layout.
So, how different is it from Animal Crossing, exactly? Well, first of all, the whole damn thing has a Copyrighted symbol in full-view. If you're one of the staunch anti-Disney posters on here, this is a definitive mark of avoidance for you. Past that, it's basically a name-swapping affair: Tom Nook is split up between Scrooge McDuck (for personal housing needs) and Goofy (for exterior farming resources). Isabelle is more or less handled by The Sword in the Stone's Merlin, and Mickey eventually serves as your Blathers analogue. The one outlying mechanic is an Energy system, which asks you to either keep some food on you at all times to keep topping off, or that simply suggest you return home for a few seconds. Considering how most of the game will take place within walking distance from your personal plot of land, this is an extremely generous implementation of that mechanic.
If I had to dock Dreamlight any points, I'd mention the lack of obviousness of certain quests. I've reached one of the themed Realms in my current save; Realms being tiny instances themed around characters that aren't part of the House of Mouse's main stable. Take, for instance, WALL-E, from the movie of the same name. I've ended in his tiny little pocket world, and was asked to find something to repair one of his treads. I went looking and only found scrap that the game did define as quest items, but never specified what I should do with.
I'd assume this is just a matter of taking five to go check out a walkthrough online, but I really shouldn't have to do this. Even Crossing's most annoying event, like Gulliver's visits, typically include clear cues in the character's dialogue. WALL-E only spews "Directive?" at the player and disengages. Your 'toon somehow immediately grasps what's going on and realizes the robot needs repairs, but the process involved is never made clear. There's a crafting bench nearby, but no amount of fishing around got me close to anything resembling gear or tread blueprints.
Past that, color me pleasantly surprised. The farming mechanic is even more forgiving than Crossing's, the game's client-side currency is generously doled out, and the server-side token is actually not accessible in a Cash Shop!
At this point, it's sort of hard to figure out what the game is doing online. Apart from analytics, the occasional ad served in the Store page - which you can entirely miss - and the gatekeeping of Dreamlight (the currency, not the game itself) to structure player progression and avoid abuse, it behaves entirely like your average PC offering, complete with a flawless response rate on the Steam Deck and a gaggle of easy exploits accessible with a trainer. Can't pay back Scrooge's loan fast enough for your liking? Just pick a trainer producer of your choosing or hex-edit yourself a berjillion coins, and move on right ahead! No online-only bullshit as you would've expected from Disney and Gameloft!
It's a very pleasant surprise, overall. Skip it if you're allergic to remixes of When you Wish upon a Star or if Disney's older stable feels so saccharine to you that you'd rather jam sporks in your eyeballs - but it's actually a very competent Life Sim that's surprisingly lenient and pleasant. It's the most pro-consumer flex I've seen the Mouse pull off in a long time, and a great alternative if you're looking for something to fill in that Tom Nook-shaped divot in your heart, in the absence of a Nintendo Switch or a copy of New Horizons.

SPRINGVALLEY (full unofficial map)
Points of access:
1. To Bayridge village: -> the Seaside path on the western end of the Winter Mountains. After the gate is opened and the road is cleared, the path runs next to the Dark Core Barricade to Bayridge village.
2. To Rockville: -> through the Wolf-pass, running throught the Winter Mountains. The direwolves attack, but MC, notices a sign of Garnok's corruption, and the Soul Riders dispel it. The wolves stop being hostile and now we can freely ride to Rockville.
NEW FACTIONS: --Jet Syndicate: Rockville, Bayridge village, Beauvista triangle. --Von Blyssen family: VB manor, equestrian centre and vineyard. --Spring rangers: Cliffside station, Highmarsh station, Morrinweald station --Spring Druids: Everspring village, Thistlebranch village --The Valas: Morrinweald and Caer Cailleach (Kah-lee-ah) --Trident Fishing Club: Shark point and Shoreline fishing village
LOCATIONS: 1. Everspring Area: -> druid village, Cliffside mountains and Everwind plateau. The Monarch Woods are full of various butterflies and the area is full of life. The Druids are protecting a spark of Aideen’s power in the middle of the lake.
2. Central Area: -> Jordan Jet’s three stables, holding home competitions between them in the Shoreline Equestrian. Also competing with the Von Blyssen riders. There is a Life Warden tree in the Suncrown Island, that is the centre of the VB gardens.
3. The Cursed Forest Area: -> helping protect the Von Blyssen vineyard from the thorns and corruption coming from Morrinweald. Storylines with the Vala witches, who were corrupted by Garnok’s power.
Stop signs: 1. Suncrown bridge: it was a beautiful stone bridge going across the river, now in ruins. It will take time and collecting resources to repair it. 2. Claymore Iron Gate: closed and the fence runs from the mountainside to the waterfall over the Old Morass. Runestones are also placed next to the fence to keep the wild vala magic in the dark valley and stop it from reaching the Claymore area. 3. Wisp valley: the path upstream next to the Suncrown river leads to the Jorcrater, but is still overgrown and closed off for now.

My Time for a Getaway in Capitol Reef National Park by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: While walking the Chimney Rock Trail with a view looking to the west while on a morning hike in Capitol Reef National Park. My thinking in composing this image was to use the high ground I was on and capture a view looking across the varied terrain to the cliff walls and monocline of the Waterpocket Fold. The blue skies and clouds would be that color contrast to complement the earth-tones in the lower portion of the image.

Kind of a baby!Lance HC but also just a general HC for Lance, but he is SO outdoorsy. Our man loves the outdoors! He loves the sunlight, the fresh air, the breeze, loves experiencing nature in its purest form. <3 And he loves swimming (as long as the water’s warm) because it reminds him of being a kid and learning to swim with the Horsea and Magikarp that inhabited the river leading into the Dragon’s Den. Whenever he went missing as a kid (which happened a LOT more than anyone was comfortable with), he would always be found near the water where the bolder pokemon would surface to play with him.
Of course this is still just as true now that he is a grown ass man. Lance is lucky there’s no lake on Indigo Plateau because he would absolutely sneak out as soon as he finished his paperwork to go hang out with his fish pals if there were. (I like to think water is probably his second-favorite type after dragon, but don’t let his flying types know he said that or they’ll leave him on top of a mountain until he takes it back. They come in a close third!)
FOR SURE, he's a nature guy. Next to people and Pokemon, Lance aims to protect the outdoors as much as he can.
Sees trash on the ground? Picks it up and puts it into a bin.
Lawn overgrown with weeds? Cut them himself.
Sees a tree? Hugs it. (OKAY MAYBE NOT THAT FAR)
I have a headcanon myself that he loves taking photos when he travels or even just taking a walk to keep little momentos of the little things in life. And yes he keeps them in a cute little scrapbook with dragon stickers on them. :_)

The settlement of Lake Illumeni
One of my favourite pastimes in breath of the wild is looking at useless details so if you're into that, let's go look at the settlement of Lake Illumeni together!
Lake Illumeni is located in the ridgeland region, just north of gerudo highlands, south of the tabantha frontier and right next to Illumeni Plateau. Surrounding the lake we have five old houses. I took the liberty of getting rid of any enemies before filming so let's go take a look at this peaceful little neighbourhood!
Ignore my lackluster editing skills please. As you can see all the houses are in pretty bad shape, there's no real hint as to why. There was an Ice wizzrobe roaming the area but I don't know if that really indicates anything.
So this is one of the more mysterious settlements I've seen, as it doesn't give a lot of hints about who lived here and why.
Tumblr media
I didn't want to go too far from the lake, so I went as far as the nearest "thing" I could find. All the locations were pretty far by foot, this is truly a secluded settlement. To the west there was really nothing but an enemy camp of bokoblins. To the north there were a few groves of trees and beyond that a group of bokoblins on horses. The skull marker to the north is a Lynel. To the east we had more groves and some moblins, and an old broken carriage!
Tumblr media
On Illumeni Plateau there was nothing but a stone Talus. And lastly to the south there's a rift in the mountain facing the gerudo highlands, in this area I found that a few moblins and bokoblins had built some wooden structures and were guarding towards north, but I didn't find much of importance there either, at least not close by.
Tumblr media
During the evening, the little grove around the lake became filled with fireflies and some other wildlife.
So who were these people, and why choose such a remote location to live in? It is unlikely that they used the relatively nearby Tamio river for transport, as the way down to the water is very steep. One strange detail though was that I couldn't find any fish in the lake at all. There were two octoroks, but no fish. Could this be a sign that the people of Illumeni fished until the lake was empty, and then moved to somewhere else? Well, who knows. In any case, a very pretty settlement that once was someones home.

Salt Lake City to Tucson
22 September - 13 October 2023
Tumblr media
My last post was on September 14th, just before I headed to Salt Lake City to start my long-anticipated ride to Tucson. Since then I’ve had an amazing three-week adventure on the bike, I’ve had numerous enjoyable rides around Seattle, and I’ve spent hours going through the resulting photos and notes. But I’ve also struggled with my motivation and my interest in maintaining this blog. Regardless of what I end up doing with the blog, I thought it would be good to write up a summary of the recent trip. Whether I flesh out individual days of the ride or whether I continue to post about future rides remains unclear.
======
I rode out of Salt Lake City on Friday, September 22nd. I rode into Tucson on Friday, October 13th. Along the way, there were 22 days of amazing landscapes and incredible riding. I traveled around 1150 miles (50+ miles/day, more than 450 of it on gravel roads and dirt tracks. I suspect I walked my bike a total of 4-5 miles on steep or rough segments. There was 83,000’ of climbing, including several sustained climbs of 4-5,000’. Much of the first week was spent climbing to or riding above 10,000’. I camped a little less than half the nights. I never took a full day off, though I considered it in Flagstaff.
Tumblr media
Highlights. There were a lot of them. Big Cottonwood Canyon and Guardsman Pass. Skyline Drive on the Wasatch Plateau. The aspens in the valley of Sevenmile Creek. Hell’s Backbone Road. Scenic Route 12 from Boulder to Escalante. Bryce and Red Canyons. Camping at Rock Point on the edge of Marble Canyon. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The San Francisco Peaks. The Mogollon Rim and the amazing descent to the Salt River.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The weather was great, except for some rain in southern Utah that required a major detour to avoid muddy roads and added two days to the trip. Temperatures were cold at night, particularly on the Wasatch Plateau, but it was great during the day. Heat was never a problem during the ride itself, though the weekend after I got to Tucson, temperatures rose into the high 90s.
My route evolved over many months of pouring over maps and checking online sources. Some of the territory was familiar to me and that influenced decisions about places I wanted to visit (or felt okay skipping). I wanted to experience as wide a range of landscapes and geologic provinces as I could. I wanted to avoid busy highways, but I also didn’t want a route that was too rough and too remote for my bike or my capabilities (particularly riding solo).
Tumblr media
The result was a wonderful mix of roads and trails. Almost 600 miles of my route was on the Western Wildlands Route (courtesy of Bikepacking Roots), a north-south route from Canada to Mexico that parallels, but lies farther west than, the better known Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.
Here’s a list of each day, showing mileages and elevation gain. I may eventually work up descriptions of each day and link them here, but haven’t done so yet. I posted fairly regularly on Instagram (@gravelbeach) and that remains a source of photos and limited narrative.

LINK to Ride with GPS: Collection of all 22 rides
Tumblr media
TOTALS (numbers vary depending on later corrections):
1170.6 miles (53.21 miles/day) (1884 kms)
690 miles paved / 480 milesunpaved
83016’ (3773’/day) (25,303 m)
Tumblr media
My bike and my gear worked out well. I rode my Salsa Warbird with a bikepacking setup. I’m on 42mm tires (tubeless). I had no tire problems, despite sharp chunky volcanic rocks and the potential for goathead thorns. My suspension stem and seat post make the rough roads a little less jarring. My only mechanical problem was a missing chain ring bolt that I discovered on the second day and was able to get fixed. I replaced the brake pads in Flagstaff. Shifting worked fine (and continues to work smoothly after shipping the bike home and adding another few hundred miles around here).
Tumblr media
My body held together, despite turning 65 on Day 4. I never had any problems with altitude besides the labored breathing you’d expect from 5000’ climbs to 10,000’. My lips were badly chapped and my skin got darker. My hands and seat were sore at times, but that was to be expected and was never an obstacle. My legs were sore when riding, but recovered quickly.
I’d been thinking about this ride ever since I wrapped last year’s trip from Whitefish MT to Salt Lake City. It was an inevitable second chapter to what became an epic ride that stretched from border to border (a one day’s ride from either end). Combined, the two-part adventure covered 2200 miles and 130,000’ climbing over 40 days of riding.

LORE UNDER THE CUT
CLAN FOUNDERS
Tumblr media
The kits who founded the clans are reincarnations of the original cats who lived in the territories. They don't know anything other than this about their old lives. They were washed up on the shore as per StarClan's will. However- as expected- they were dead. StarClan spoke to them about starting their own respective clans and granted them their lives back- plus nine more. As of now they are settling into their new homes and lives. As a side piece of lore- Stormstar and Wingstar are siblings!
CricketClan:
stoic temperament, forest biome, grotto camp.
Cricketstar
female, quiet, splashes in puddles, 2 moons.
StormClan:
gracious temperament, beach biome, shipwreck camp.
Stormstar:
male, nervous, avid play-fighter, 3 moons.
MossClan:
proud temperament, plains biome, wastelands camp.
Moss-star:
male, noisy, moss-ball hunter, 4 moons.
WingClan:
amiable temperament, mountain biome, cliffs camp.
Wingstar:
female, quiet, quick witted, 3 moons.
Territory Map
Tumblr media
WingClan: WingClan's territory was founded by 3 moon old Wingstar. Many cliff edges must be jumped to meaning it's cats are skilled jumpers. Their prey mostly consists of birds. They have a small stretch of territory over MossClan territory to reach the lake, their only source of fresh water if it hasn't rained on the moss pile they leave out to collect water from.
MossClan: MossClan's territory was founded by 4 moon old Moss-star. Their territory is mostly open grass with no cover, but the closer they get to the lake the more marshy it is. Their prey consists of mostly rabbits and fish. They are very fast, but have soft pads due to the marshy and grassy terrain.
CricketClan: CricketClan's territory was founded by 2 moon old Cricketstar. Their territory is in the forest at the bottom of the mountains and stretches as far as the ledge overseeing the ocean. They are great at stalking in the undergrowth and climbing trees. Their prey mostly consists of squirrels, mice and shrews.
StormClan: StormClan's territory was founded by 3 moon old Stormstar. Its on the beach the four founders arrived at. They are powerful swimmers and good at climbing wet rocks. Their prey mostly consists of fish, octopus and crabs.

This Mississippian Mound village sits on a high plateau in what was once a forest filled with deer, bears, raccoons, big cats, opossum, wild turkey, squirrels, etc, et al. Alligators, fish, and turtles live in the surrounding creeks and lakes. Snakes and waterbirds are everywhere. I imagine waking up here each day was pleasant for the most part. Today it is surrounded by a subdivision, and backs up on the extremely noisy I-10 freeway. #apalachee #village #ghosts #archaeology #moundbuilders #indigenoushistory #landmark #florida #nativeamerica https://www.instagram.com/p/Cnj4YsEricT/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
