Akemi has to argue Mizu into using the inn’s bath house. Mizu says there’s a spring nearby—Akemi has no idea how she’s found the time to sniff it out. There’s dozens of things like this, things that just hadn’t occurred to her. Of course Mizu couldn’t use a bath house.
But as Akemi points out, they’re the only ones staying at the inn, and Akemi can stand guard for Mizu. Besides, it’s an opportunity for the proprietress to properly launder Mizu’s clothing—not to mention her own. The inn is happy to provide them with yukata. Still, even though the proprietress leaves them to themselves, Mizu is supremely awkward undressing, unable to make eye contact.
Akemi, in turn, shrugs off her kimono and lets them puddle in the basket left to them. She looks up, finds Mizu’s eyes darting away. She holds her hands out for Mizu’s cloak, her kanten, her hakama, her underclothes. She pushes the basket through the doors—Mizu stands well out of view, far past the door. Her breasts are still wrapped. She stands tense, her eyes on the yukata that Akemi has placed on a chair.
Akemi has seen a lot of women in various states of undress, women of all sorts of shapes and sizes, but she’s never quite seen a woman like Mizu. Her limbs are long and lean, but sculpted deep with muscle. When she lets down her hair, there’s something pure about her—she’s no less a woman than Akemi, it’s just that she’s leaned into a different set of possibilities.
Mizu isn’t familiar with bath houses. She wants to step into the water immediately. Akemi has to stop her, show her to the washing stations on the sides. There’s a long, irregular mirror on the stone wall of the bath house, misted by the heat of the baths. Akemi sits, wipes off a portion and takes down her hair, then ladles water onto her hair until it’s soaked.
She passes a soap bar to Mizu, who again glances away as soon as Akemi looks at her. Wordlessly, she accepts the soap, dips it into the bucket near her station, and starts to work up a lather—then she seems to realize she’s still wearing her bindings. She undoes them, letting out an unconscious sigh of relief. Her breasts are larger than Akemi would have thought, high and defined. Mizu lets the bindings puddle on the bench she’s sitting on, and begins lathering up herself up feet-first, soaping up her long, long legs.
Akemi has to look away. She starts by washing her hair, and moves down—the opposite direction. She watches herself in the mirror, can’t help but look at Mizu, a good amount of the tension gone out of her, her posture relaxed, if still perfect. Even her expression is softer. She’s meticulous in cleaning herself, obviously taking advantage of a rare opportunity. The sight of her working soap into her hair while gleaming with water and suds drives Akemi a little crazy, and she turns her back to finish dousing herself in water. Which is helpfully cool. Maybe she should have let Mizu go to that spring.

Hiroshi Yoshida (吉田 博, Yoshida Hiroshi, September 19, 1876 – April 5, 1950) was a 20th-century Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker. He is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the shin-hanga style, and is noted especially for his landscape prints. Yoshida travelled widely, and was particularly known for his images of non-Japanese subjects done in traditional Japanese woodblock style, including the Taj Mahal, the Swiss Alps, the Grand Canyon, and other National Parks in the United States.
