May 10, 2024 - Hundreds of radical environmentalists and anticapitalists have broken through police lines and fences and stormed the terrain of the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg. They are attempting to stop the planned expansion of the factory, which would mean the destruction of surrounding forest and farmland. The factory also uses immense amounts of water, and all to sell shitty electric cars to give people the idea that personal consumption choices can save the environment from destruction, and make fascist Elon Musk even richer than he already is. The actions in the past days have forced Tesla to temporarily shut down production at the factory. [video]

CATL May Dominate Battery Production in North America with Planned Mexico Gigafactory

CATL May Build New Battery Factory in Mexico

It looks like CATL, the world's biggest battery maker, could be setting up shop in Mexico! According to a recent Bloomberg report, CATL is thinking about constructing a new factory across the border. This plant would supply battery packs to electric car companies Tesla and Ford.

Two Potential Sites in Northern Mexico

Sources with knowledge of CATL's plans said the company is considering two locations for the new factory. One is Ciudad Juarez in the state of Chihuahua. The other is Saltillo in nearby Coahuila. Both cities sit right on the Texas border.

The sources, who wanted to stay anonymous, mentioned CATL may invest a whopping $5 billion in getting this factory up and running. That's a lot of money that could create many jobs in northern Mexico!

CATL Dominates the Battery Market

Data released last month by China's automotive battery industry group showed CATL is still king. Nearly half - 49.6% to be exact - of all electric car batteries worldwide came from CATL. Companies like BYD, LG Energy, and Guoxuan followed behind with smaller but still sizable shares.

It's no surprise then that Tesla picks CATL, LG, and Panasonic as suppliers. These three make the most batteries on the planet, after all. With a new factory, CATL looks to expand its massive lead even further.

What This Could Mean for North America

A CATL battery gigafactory in Mexico would be huge news for the electric vehicle industry in North America. Producing locally could lower costs for automakers. It may also mean more jobs as battery production ramps up to meet growing EV demand. Exciting times are ahead as companies like CATL power our shift to electric transportation!

Northvolt Secures Record $5 Billion in Debt Financing for Expansion and Recycling Facility
Tumblr media
Europe’s Leading Battery Manufacturer Readies For Possible Stock Market Listing
In a significant development, Northvolt, the Swedish battery manufacturer, has solidified its status as Europe’s best-funded start-up by securing a groundbreaking $5 billion in debt financing. The funding, acknowledged as the largest green loan in Europe to date, is poised to fuel the expansion of the company’s inaugural gigafactory and the construction of a state-of-the-art recycling facility on the same site. This move highlights the insatiable demand for capital in the region’s burgeoning battery sector and positions Northvolt for potential stock market listing, pending improved market conditions.
Record-Breaking Financing
Northvolt’s recent announcement validates earlier reports from the Financial Times in March, indicating the company’s intent to raise $5 billion in debt. The funds were sourced from a consortium of 23 banks, alongside significant contributions from the European Investment Bank and the Nordic Investment Bank. This financing, which encompasses the refinancing of a $1.6 billion debt package from July 2020, brings the company’s total raised capital to over $13 billion, facilitating its ambitious plan to establish four major factories across Sweden, Germany, and Canada by the decade’s end.
Challenges and Milestones at Northvolt Ett
The financing will play a pivotal role in realizing the full potential of Northvolt Ett, the company’s inaugural gigafactory situated below the Arctic Circle in northern Sweden. Although the company Ett commenced battery production in late 2021, it faced delays and setbacks, impacting overall production. Notably, the Swedish truckmaker Scania, among other customers, has been awaiting deliveries from Northvolt Ett, contributing to the company’s losses, which surged eight-fold to nearly SKr11 billion ($1.1 billion) for the first three quarters of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Focus on Sustainability and Circular Practices
Peter Carlsson, Northvolt’s CEO and co-founder, emphasized the financing as a milestone for the European energy transition. The funds will not only support the gigafactory but also finance the adjacent recycling plant, Revolt Ett. This marks the first instance of a company outside Asia placing a recycling facility next to battery manufacturing. According to Northvolt, recycled battery materials boast a 70% lower carbon footprint than mined minerals, reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainable and circular business practices.
Environmental Recognition and Future Challenges
Northvolt received a commendable “dark green” rating from Cicero, a Norwegian consultancy assessing the environmental quality of debt offerings. Emma Nehrenheim, Chief Environmental Officer at Northvolt, expressed pride in attracting top-tier financial partners, noting that global capital is increasingly keen on investing in electrification and climate change mitigation. Despite the challenges faced by the company, executives remain optimistic, anticipating that future gigafactories will necessitate their own multibillion-dollar financing packages.
Northvolt received advisory support from BNP Paribas, Allen & Overy, and Mannheimer Swartling, underscoring the strategic collaboration behind this monumental financing endeavor. As Northvolt navigates its expansion and sustainability initiatives, the battery manufacturer is positioned as a trailblazer in Europe’s transition towards greener energy solutions.

Demand for electric vehicles is still low Mazda doesn't offer all-electric vehicles in the United States after it pulled the MX-30 electric crossover from its lineup this summer due to poor sales. Mazda sold just 100 units of the MX-30 in the first eight months of 2023. The automaker plans to release another battery-electric vehicle in the United States, but it reportedly won't arrive until 2025. Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly recently told Automotive News that the upcoming electric vehicle will likely be a crossover, noting that the automaker will add more electric vehicles if consumer demand grows. Releasing one new EV in two years is unlikely to help Mazda gain a foothold in the US EV market. The automaker's approach to electric vehicles appears to be overly cautious, but Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro believes the share of electric vehicles in the overall U.S. new passenger car market is too small. Only Tesla cars are popular. Speaking to Fortune, Moreau acknowledged the importance of electric vehicles, but said demand for them is still low. [caption id="attachment_84648" align="aligncenter" width="780"] Tesla[/caption] The head of Mazda said that electric cars are not gaining popularity, with the exception of Tesla “Electric vehicles are an undeniably important technology, and we are developing it. But in the US, electric vehicles took up about 6% of the market last year. This year - 8%. And 57% of them came from Tesla. Other electric vehicles are not gaining popularity, stocks are piling up,” he said. Moreau added that the lack of charging stations is another factor hampering the growth of electric vehicle market share in the United States. He also wasn't particularly optimistic about the auto industry's transition to a zero-emissions future in 2035: "How we get to zero depends on consumer choices and social infrastructure."

Volkswagen puts off construction of gigafactory in Czech Republic amid low demand for electric cars
Volkswagen will not set up new European battery gigafactories for electric vehicles (EVs) for the time being, according to Euractiv.
The carmaker’s CEO Oliver Blume made this statement. He noted:
Given the market situation, including the slower uptake of the EV market in Europe, there are no commercial reasons to decide on additional locations in Europe for the time being. At the same time, Volkswagen and PowerCo have already selected three sites for battery cell production: Salzgitter (Germany), Valencia (Spain) and St. Thomas (Canada). These three sites have a production potential of up to 200 GWh per year.
After a meeting with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala in Prague, Blume commented on Volkwagen’s decision. The Czech Republic offered Volkswagen a site in the west of the country. After the rejection, the government will look for another investor.
