#Gl: WELL I'M NOT GOING BY YELLOW LANTERN
ghost-bxrd · 5 days
Note
Building on that earlier post about Talon Dick making poor Hal's life hell...
Another Green Lantern - I'm thinking Guy Gardner - is hanging around for some reason. And he won't stop mocking Hal for being nervous around some 'weirdo kid'.
Dick overhears. Or Jason does, and reports.
Well, Hal maybe a jerk, but he is their jerk, only they get to mess with him. Plus, seriously, is the guy going around in that suit calling someone else a weirdo?
Mission launched.
Y E S.
Jason and Dick love screwing with Hal, but they also kinda like him. Sometimes.
Anyway, some half ass dude thinks he can just show up and insult one of THEIR idiots? Hell no.
Cue: Robin and Dick devising several devious plans. Those plans involve copious amounts of glitter, about fifteen heart attacks via surprise attack from the vents, six instances of creepy bird laughter, and at least three times waking up to luminous yellow eyes watching him from across the room… eyes that are gone the moment the GL blinks he starts screaming.
The new Green Lantern guy tries to retaliate exactly one (1) time, and has the misfortune of making Robin the target.
Dick very nearly (and very literally) claws his face off.
None of the other JLA members are sympathetic to the Green Lantern’s plight. They’re actually kind of impressed he’s still alive.
(Hal totally sheds a tear or so because— the scary children have his back! And it’s a nice feeling, okay!? Stop judging him!)

Green lantern: "You are a child! You can't possibly ask us to keep putting you in so much danger!"
Captain Marvel: "One of your weaknesses is the colour yellow"
GL: "Well I-"
Captain Marvel: "I am immune to everything but magic. I have one less weakness than Superman over there"
Superman: "Why am I getting dragged into this?"
Captain Marvel: "Magic is a lot harder to come by than, say, a fucking yellow sweater! What happens when you have to fight aliens that are yellow by nature, huh? What happens then? You call Supes? And how many other heavy hitters do you think you should have available at all times? Just him? And you- no wait, you're getting your ass handed to you by the yellow aliens, I forgot"
GL: "..."
GL: "Damn kid"
Flash: "I'm not gonna lie to you GL. You lost this fight. I was going to side with you, but kid's got a point. Brutal."
Wonder woman: "And I feel that, the moment the young Captain decides to put himself into the superhero fights, it would be more of an hindrance to try and stop him"
Flash: "Yeah. And also I feel like we might not even be able to. Dude's a tank with powers given by the gods. I'm not touching that"

Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #8 (Spring 1994)
When Hal Jordan went bonkers in GL#50, he didn't just kill the Green Lantern Corps -- he also killed Green Lantern Corps Quarterly, the anthology series that, as the editor goes out of his way to point out in this final issue's letter column, was still selling pretty well when it got cancelled. DC could have kept the series going with past stories of the Corps, or maybe current stories of past Corps members, but I guess they wanted to go all in on the "only ONE Green Lantern left" thing and felt this series undermined that idea, so they asked Lobo to stop by and help kill it.
The stories included in this loosely "Emerald Twilight"-connected issue are:
"The Book of Endings"
The issue's framing story is written by Superman editor Mike Carlin, which I'm guessing means it had to be done at the last minute and he drew the short straw at the office. This story reveals that, while Hal and Sinestro where fighting in GL #50, they didn't even notice that the Book of Oa, the massive book containing the history of the Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, was burning up right in front of them (and neither did the Guardians, apparently, or they would have thrown some water on it or something).
Tumblr media
As the oversized pages burn, we see stories that have absolutely nothing to do with "Emerald Twilight," like...
"Close Encounters"
This story is set during World War II, when Green Lantern Abin Sur, Hal Jordan's predecessor, is sent to Earth to stop a murderous madman -- but not the murderous madman, because the Guardians have forbidden him from interfering in human wars. Abin's target is an alien mercenary called Dask N'oir, who comes to Earth looking to offer his services (and sci-fi weapons) to the Nazis. Fortunately, the Nazis aren't big on multiculturalism and don't understand alien languages, so they think Dask is a demon and try to fight him.
The Nazis are so spooked that some run off to the Allied side to ask for help against the "demon." There, they bump into the 1940's Flash and (non-Corps affiliated) Green Lantern, Jay Garrick and Alan Scott, who bravely confront Dask... and are knocked out in one blast.
Tumblr media
Abin Sur shows up to arrest the alien criminal, but he too gets easily knocked out when Dask shoots some yellow goo at his hand that incapacitates his Green Lantern ring. When Abin wakes up, he realizes Dask stole the ring, leaving him defenseless. That's when Abin notices that one of the unconscious Earthlings around him happens to have an off-brand GL ring on his finger...
Tumblr media
So, Abin borrows Alan's ring and goes off to fight Dask, eventually tricking him into shooting that yellow goo at his own hand, thus allowing Abin to retrieve his ring. Before leaving with Dask, Abin returns Alan's ring and wipes his and Jay's memory of the encounter. The story ends with Abin looking forward to the day he can return to Earth (spoilers: he shouldn't) as Alan wakes up and wonders why his ring is in the wrong finger.
"Bad Intentions"
This one is written by future Guy Gardner: Warrior writer Beau Smith, and features an extremely Beau Smith character called Probert the Bad One, a sort of alien Conan the Barbarian with guns. One day, right after Probert has blown up a T. Rex to rescue a kid from being eaten, a Guardian shows up to ask him for help in taking down his sector's Green Lantern, Krudd, who has used his ring to take over a wealthy planet. Great pick, Guardians.
Probert only agrees to help because Krudd has taken his former lover, Poola, as a concubine, but he refuses to take the ring the Guardian offers him, because Probert don't wear no pansy-ass rings. (This might explain why Poola is a former lover.)
Tumblr media
Of course, Probert regrets that decision once he's fighting Krudd and realizes his machine gun is no match for a power ring that can conjure up anything, including anti-machine gun force fields. Just as he's saying that, a GL battery materializes right next to him. Probert starts trying to activate the battery with various oaths ("It's probably something girly-like. Flower flower, give me the powers.") until he lands on something that works: "GIVE ME THE JUICE!"
Suddenly, despite still wearing no ring, Probert is imbued with green power, which he uses to materialize more guns. Krudd fights dirty and is actually quite good with the ring, so Probert ends up taking it away by cutting his finger off with a green energy knife (at least he didn't cut off the entire hand, unlike some other maniac).
Once Krudd is incapacitated, the Guardian comes back to take him and Probert's power away, but Probert says nah, it's his now. The Guardian takes that to mean that Probert has agreed to continue helping them "on retainer" and vanishes before Probert can protest.
Tumblr media
He still ain't wearing no ring, though.
"Yella Belly!"
In this Gene Ha-drawn story, L.E.G.I.O.N. sends Lobo to Garnet, the most crime-ridden planet in the universe, to collect a criminal. This puts him in conflict with Garnet's very un-Green Lantern-like Green Lantern, Jack T. Chance. Lobo's not in the mood for fighting one of his many '90s ripoffs... until Jack calls him a "yella belly." Big mistake.
In the fight that ensues, Jack tries killing Lobo with a green chainsaw, but the ring stops him because that's not within its parameters. "Letting its wearer get kicked in the nuts" is within those parameters, though.
Tumblr media
Jack tries shooting Lobo in the head with a regular gun, but Lobo catches the bullets with his teeth and headbutts him after playing dead. As Jack is recovering from that blow with the assistance of some booze, Lobo gets an idea based on Jack's hurtful remark from earlier: he covers himself in the yellow blood of some other alien he'd killed earlier and exploits the ring's yellow weakness to beat the crap out of Jack, yelling "Yella belly! Yella belly! YELLA BELLY!"
Lobo tries stealing Jack's ring, but it's "encoded by his D.N.A." and can't be stolen... so, for the second time this issue, someone cuts a ring-bearer's finger off. By simply "wearing" Jack's severed finger on top of his own, Lobo is able to access the ring's power and thinks about all the wonderful things he's gonna do with it (starting with exploding L.E.G.I.O.N.'s planet) -- until the ring informs him that it only works in planet Garnet, killing Lobo's interest.
Tumblr media
As Lobo leaves with that criminal he came for, we see the finger crawling back to Jack and reattaching itself to his hand. Upon waking up and learning that Lobo left, Jack takes that as a victory and declares himself the baddest dude in Garnet. (Until he was easily beaten by Hal and left for dead in space, anyway.)
Back to the framing story, the narration concludes that the Guardians are a bunch of incompetent asses and kinda had this whole "Emerald Twilight" thing coming. All the stories in this issue feature a ring being stolen and used for nefarious purposes (not always in that order), so maybe it has a point. As the Book of Oa finishes burning, we get a small glimpse of the future: it appears to be a young man...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...wearing a crab on his face?! Huh, weird.
Plotline-Watch:
I guess the above panel means this issue is technically the first appearance of Kyle Rayner's classic "crab face" costume, discounting ads and stuff like that. This should be going for hundreds on eBay, not a couple of bucks!
We'll see Probert the Bad One return on Guy Gardner: Warrior pretty soon. Alan Scott will also make some appearances there, starting sooner than you might think.
Lobo and L.E.G.I.O.N. will cross paths with Kyle Rayner in the near future, though they won't be called L.E.G.I.O.N. anymore...
Speaking of Lobo, as he's leaving Garnet's atmosphere, he kicks some little dweeb off his flying vehicle while exclaiming "One side, fan boy!" I have no idea if that's supposed to be someone in particular or if it's just a random joke, so I will assume it's the titular fanboy from the 1999 Fanboy miniseries by Sergio Aragonés.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And speaking of planet Garnet, I looked it up and its next appearance is in Superboy and the Ravers, of all places, so I guess we'll see that eventually over at the '90s Superman blog.
Guy-Watch:
Guy Gardner: Warrior #19 continues the "Emerald Fallout" storyline and also Guy's fight with Militia (or as Guy has started calling him, "Melissa"). Ice helps, but then she starts getting a little too aggro (a side-effect of her new powers) and tries to take on Militia all by herself while leaving Guy behind, which doesn't go too well for her.
With Ice down and Guy's new armor malfunctioning, Militia's really got our hero by the balls. Militia picks that moment to reveal his identity and why hunting Guy was so personal to him: he's Guy's supposedly dead cop brother, Mace Gardner! Cue emotional "family reunion" music.
Tumblr media
Mace resented Guy for becoming a superhero so, after getting crippled, he faked his death and volunteered for government experiments that gave him his legs back at the cost of making him look and sound like a '90s supervillain. Just when it seems like Mace might kill him, Guy's yellow power ring, which has been on the fritz for the past two issues, gets a sudden burst of energy that allows him to defeat his bro in about two seconds.
Tumblr media
Seeing that Militia failed them again, his superiors at the Quorum decide to ditch him and remotely disable his armor, leaving him crippled again. What's all this stuff got to do with "Emerald Twilight," you might ask? Not much, until Alan Scott suddenly shows up (told you he'd be back soon) and tells Guy the universe is in danger. So, you know, TO BE CONTINUED.

GREEN LANTERN CORPS #222-224 (FINAL ISSUE)
March/May 1988
By Steve Englehart, Joey Cavalieri, Joe Staton, Gil Kane, Mark Farmer, Anthony Tollin, Agustin Mas, Carrie Spiegle, and Albert DeGuzman.
Tumblr media
The Green Lantern Corps have to decide whether they kill Sinestro or not... but their decision will mark the end of an era for the corps.
Tumblr media
SCORE: 8
Did I review issue #222? Maybe... but these last three issues were meant to be read together.
Spoilers for a three decades old story?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not a fan of Gil Kane. I understand why they wanted him to be involved in this story, but perhaps it was a big departure from Staton.
However, in this case, Gil Kane did very well... mainly because of two reasons.
Because it's in space and we don't get to see Gil's outdated human fashion choices.
Mark Farmer did an amazing job modernizing his style.
Tumblr media
So what happened? Why is this the end?
To make the story short, when the GLC decided to kill Sinestro, they broke a hidden rule. If a GL ever killed any male from Korugar, the battery would destroy itself.
Hal had to visit the Guardians (now retired), and there he found out the battery's destruction would create a black hole that would destroy the universe. They commanded him to get into the battery himself to face... well... the yellow impurity that in this case was the soul of Sinestro or something like that (this story takes place way before the creation of the Parallax entity).
As a result, only a handful of Green Lanterns are left after this story.
But the story behind the story was that DC wanted to go back to having one main Green Lantern. Something that would prove to be difficult, as Earth had three of them (plus ex-green lanterns).
At the time the book ended, Green Lantern Corps (originally Green Lantern) had the sixth longest run at DC. It would be replaced a while later by a new volume of Green Lantern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I am not sure what happened with the last issue (Cavalieri replaced Englehart). So he probably didn't approve of the change of direction... or maybe he was already working on New Guardians (at least, I think I remember the same team of Millennium being involved in that).

I’ve seen a few fics mention that the gls don’t have to eat/sleep Bc of the rings? Is that fannon or real ?
Well I have seen Hal go "oh boy im sleepy, time to take a nap right here, in the middle of empty space!" before, so i'm going to say that they still get tired at the very least! But the old GL rings have a built-in life support system, so even if they do need to eat/sleep, going without won't kill them.
The ring functions off willpower, so if the green lanterns believe that they don't need to eat or sleep, then they won't need to eat or sleep. The only limitations of the ring are the color yellow and the ring bearer themselves.

If you had to alter the mechanics or names of some of the latern power rings, how would you go about it? I’m really an outsider trying to start reading gl, and I was frankly confused about why hope and willpower are separate rings, and I thought to ask you since you know a lot
Okay there's two separate parts to your question and I'm going to answer the second part first.
Okay so why are the hope and willpower separate rings? A bit of backstory, while the main functions of how the green lantern corps + rings work has been mostly stable since 1959 (I say mostly, 90s are an exception and the current ones are less powerful and don't have a yellow weakness), the rest of the corps did not exist (Sinestro had a yellow ring but wasn't a yellow lantern, and the Star Sapphires are complicated). That's why the corps are focused around willpower rather than an emotion. It's the ability to push back fear rather than having a certain emotion.
The blue lantern corps are an off shoot of the green lantern corps kinda. They were created by Ganthet and Sayd after they got kicked off oa. They were an acknowledgement by Ganthet and Sayd that it wasn't right to cut off all emotions. The blue lantern rings work best in tandem to the gl rings- making the gl rings twice as powerful, can only be defensive except in the presence of a gl ring. The first (and most famous) blue lantern is Saint Walker. The blue lanterns believe that all will be well.
You actually do not need hope to work a gl ring, Hal for example was particularly shown to have difficultly working blue lantern rings because despite having a lot of will, a lot of stubbornness, he didn't have hope for a better tomorrow. They tap into different emotions.
Uh for alternate the mechanics, I would completely change what's happened with the Star Sapphires and make the violet lanterns (as the new version of Star Sapphires are sometimes known) as a separate entity than Star Sapphire and the Zamorans. I hate Carol being reduced to love lantern even when that had nothing to do with star sapphire until geoff. Else, I actually really like the different lantern corps? A lot of thought was put into individualizing the various corps, so its not like oh the villain has the same powers as the hero, how original.

Send me a character and I’ll tell you a song lyric that reminds me of them. - Guy (and if u want also any other JLI character that you like)
I have... many songs for Guy... I'll try to sort them by time frame, vaguely. This will probably be very cringe but I refuse to apologize. It also got really long, so I'm putting it under a read more lol.
TL:DR:
JLI Era Guy - Industry Baby by Lil Nas X: "You was never really rootin' for me anyway / When I'm back up at the top I wanna hear you say / He don't run from nothin', dog / Get your soldiers, tell em that the break is over"
Yellow Ring Guy - Lips Shut by Nina Chupa: "I killed kindness, with my own violence / I'm thinking twice now, I'm on the brink of niceness"
Warriors Guy - Under The Pressure by The Score: "No, not today / Not gonna make the same mistakes / No, not today / Not gonna cave, not gonna break "
Post-Warriors Guy - Born For This by The Score: "We are the warriors, who learned to love the pain / We come from different places but have the same name / 'Cause we were born for this / We are the broken ones, who chose to spark a flame / Watch as our fire rages, our hearts are never tame / Cause we were, 'cause we were born for this / We were born for this"
JLI Green Lantern Guy: Industry Baby by Lil Nas X
"And this one is for the champions
I ain't lost since I began, yeah
Funny how you said it was the end, yeah
Then I went did it again, yeah
I told you long ago, on the road
I got what they waitin' for
I don't run from nothin', dog
Get your soldiers, tell 'em I ain't layin' low
You was never really rootin' for me anyway
When I'm back up at the top I wanna hear you say
He don't run from nothin', dog
Get your soldiers, tell 'em that the break is over"
I think it fits Guy in that time period really well, because his life's - his life's pretty shit. He's recently come out of a six year (-ish) coma, he's lost his job and his ability to do his job, he has two - three friends max, and even they get annoyed and angry at him often. He gets treated so unfairly and is being given... very little consideration and compassion or awknowledgement for the good he does.
If I was in Guy's position, I'd probably throw the towel really fast, but Guy's not the kind of person to give up, even if going on hurts him and he's so desperate to prove himself. He wants people to see how good he is, he wants to be awknowledged as the Top Guy (hehe), by the JLI and the GL corps. He's treading water and still swimming upstream, no matter what.
Yellow Ring Guy: Lips Shut by Nina Chupa
"I killed kindness, with my own violence
I'm thinking twice now, I'm on the brink of niceness
With myself in hindsight, I should love the highlights
I should treat myself right
I should not be scared of night time thoughts
That I'm not enough for my own life
[...]
I hear a million carbon copies of myself
And every single one of them is shouting
You should go to hell
The more they talk the more I think I might as well
And maybe, maybe I should sew their lips shut
They want me praying at the altar of my doubt
They shout Judas in the flesh has come around
So it's supper for suckers before I'm out
I should sew their lips shut"
I love the opening lines of this song for Guy, because when Guy first gets his yellow ring he is literally on the brink of niceness and he struggles with it. He's trying so hard to kill kindness with his violence, but he can't, because Tora has shown him kindness and made him show his own niceness and now he can't stop! He's a softie! He hates it! I love him!
This period of Guy's life is about him healing, from the downward spiral he was in since he got trapped in the Phantom Zone - he's realizing he doesn't have to be the though Guy leader all the time, he gets friends who genuinely like him, in an uncomplicated way (Sally... My fave), because he can have relationships like that again and he's getting better, feeling steadier and calmer, he starts not hating himself so much and being less insecure, because for so long, being a Green Lantern was the only thing that gave him value and now it's gone and Guy's still here, he picked up the pieces of himself and found... that he's still worth something, if he tries to be. And he does, even when other people don't accept him or value him. (Superman, the League after Tora's death...)
Guy has lost everything at least twice now, and he's still going on and I think that's the point where he gains his amazing confidence in himself, because he knows he can pick himself back up now, no matter what, even if he has to do it alone.
Warrior Guy: Under the Pressure by The Score
"Fear wears a smile but I'll be the last one laughing
Try to take me down, no it ain't ever gonna happen, no, oh oh
No, not today
Not gonna make the same mistakes
No, not today
Not gonna cave, not gonna break
Under the pressure
Under the pressure
(I'm never gonna break)
(No matter what it takes)
Pressure, pressure calls my name
I think it's time that I should
Push it back and entertain it
Forever, ever like a game
Stacked up the cards against me
Now I think my luck is changing"
As Warrior, Guy finally gets a fucking break, he's still going through a lot (Tora's death, his own death during Our Worlds At War, Arisia...) BUT he finally has friends, finally has a real home, is finally happy with his life again. He gets visited by other heroes, they meet at Warriors, children look up to him again - Guy's finally settled into his skin again. He knows who he is again, he knows what he can do, he knows what he's worth. He's calmed down and steady, able to support others, like Kyle and Zinda, and Impulse, and - and everyone who comes through the door long enough to be spotted.
Warrior Guy is so wonderfully warm, and open, and accepting. I really do think this is the ideal Future for Guy - being able to grow old as a fixture of the hero community, someone the younger generations all look up to and can lean on, call on for advice, someone incredibly dependable.
But still rough around the edges, and inappropriate at times, headstrong and stubborn, difficult to get along with. Because by god, has Guy learned how little being nice and normal will get you, how little people will give you if you struggle like he has. If someone sticks around while he's a gruff and rude asshole, they're gonna stick around. If someone's only friends with him while Guy plays nice, polishes off his accent and his crude jokes, then they're gonna drop him as soon as things get difficult.
He's found his people now, in his Warriors Crew, in Zinda, in Ted, in Kyle, even in Bea and he's content now.
Post-Warrior Green Lantern Guy: Born for this by The Score
"We are the warriors, who learned to love the pain
We come from different places but have the same name
'Cause we were born for this
We are the broken ones, who chose to spark a flame
Watch as our fire rages, our hearts are never tame
'Cause we were, 'cause we were,
'Cause we were, 'cause we were born for this
We were born for this
I've struggled for years and
Through all of the tears
I've faced the doubts I hide
I never gave into my fears deep within
'Cause I heard my voice inside
I know I was born for this
I know I was born for this
I will never lose my voice
If I cut out all the noise
I know, I was born for this
I know, I was born for this
I believe, I believe
We can write our story
I believe, I believe
We can be an army
[...]
These words that I write are for someone like me
To know you're not alone
The moves that you make ya they come with mistakes
Don't ever lose your hope
Just know, you were born for this
Just know, you were born for this"
This one is kinda my anthem of the entire New Green Lantern Corps, but it's always tied up with Guy specifically. I hate every word Geoff Johns has ever written with a burning passion, but I love Guy rejoining the Corps and getting to be a mentor, and appreciated and loving the Corps so much and finally getting loved in return, and finally, finally getting part of the group, of the family. After literal decades of being an outsider, Guy is finally part of the family. I am going to make myself cry.
Like, Guy is more than just a Green Lantern, he has lived without the Corps before and he can do it again, he doesn't need them - but he loves them. He loves them so much. Guy has loved the Corps with all his heart ever since he first put on the ring, first recited the vow, and by god he has never stopped loving it and his fellow Lanterns, even while he was in a coma, even while they treated him like shit, even when he wasn't a Lantern anymore. Guy has loved the Corps for decades, and he's finally getting loved back. He was born for this, and he's home.

If Carmilla is a Star Sapphire then that means that Scáthach is a Green Lantern, right? Which makes me laugh a little, thinking of her going up against the Guardians when they're doing dumb shit. And I'm guessing that would mean that Cú Chulainn is also a Green Lantern.... Fionn could be the leader of the Indigo Tribe.... I do not see Diarmuid has one of the Indigo Tribe though.
Oh anon you have unlocked my Pandora's Box with this one lemme tell you because Fionn is Blue, Actually
Scathach is a GL though you nailed that, so her and Carmilla have a "friends to enemies to lovers" plot going on! She's a great GL but is formally banned from OA because she's always mouthing off to the Guardians
Medb is Red because they're all about hatred and anger and...well I think she should be allowed to go unhinged on Conchobar someone. Cu is actually a Yellow Lantern! The ability to instill great Fear :) Fergus is the other Green Lantern and he and Scathach are in neighbouring Sectors so they see a lot of eachother
I do get why you think Fionn would be Indigo since it's all about Compassion but errr the Indigo Tribe (more often than not) force that emotion onto other people and are also slaves to their own Ring in a sense. I also don't think "Compassion" encapsulates everything Fionn stands for; "Hope" is much better for him (fun fact: Blue Light is actually the strongest on the Emotional Spectrum but also the most difficult to use!)
Diarmuid isn't a Lantern himself, though he used to be. He came into possession of the Orange ring (Greed/Avarice) and it was Fionn's healing that safely separated him from it which is why he's now part of Fionn's space crew. He's also a cool alien because this is my self-indulgent AU <3 (Cu and Medb are also aliens)
