Letter from Rob Travalino to DB Fans- 2022
Hey y’all! So we managed to get in touch with Rob recently, and he was extremely kind to write a note to us! We’ll be updating the zine with this section soon-ish, but thought you might enjoy reading it here first! Enjoy :)
-Li / @paynnincorporated
(Also hehe, there might be more news to come! Rob’s kindly taken some fan questions from the organising team! We’ll share answers when we get them.)
----
Dragon Booster remains one of my favorite life moments, and there have been so many since the show. It was a fantastic journey to be sure, and it often seemed the dragon was in control from the beginning, and the show was meant to be.
Our Canadian partner Alliance Atlantis (Ken Faier and Jennifer Bennett) came on board the very first time they saw the presentation. They learned about the show because Kidscreen Editor Jocelyn Christie loved it so much that she did a feature about it and put us on the magazine cover. We sold the show to CBC (Martin Markle) and Disney (Gary Marsh) with just one meeting.
We already knew Ace Fipke from another company called Mainframe, and NerdCorps in Vancouver was actually custom-built just for Dragon Booster. Our original sales video/animation test was made in a rented apartment that we filled with computer workstations, passionate artists, and animators. That apartment crew became the seeds of NerdCorps Entertainment.
Then, even more, amazing things happened:
Everybody found something different to love about the show and message, which was so rewarding. My co-creator Kevin Mowrer and I lived in the world for years. It began with a feature film prequel idea that takes place years before the series and focuses on Tannis Bllayrr. The world took years to plan and create. It was meant to function as a real place, and we'd hoped to make it into a sprawling online game.
I carefully scripted the show and story for you, the fans, and was thinking about what the story and each detail might mean and hopefully inspire. I wanted Dragon Booster to reflect the world and finding our place in it. Kevin Mowrer shared this vision and carefully put story, emotional content, and personality into every but of art and design he did. The NerdCorps crew picked up the vibe and expanded from there, taking the look and feel of the show and world to even new levels. As a result, the show itself is full of cool double and hidden meanings about culture and our world. Like Mortis might suggest, like Dragon City, and each of us, it all depends on how deep we're willing to look.
Obviously, I'm still a fan myself, and sometimes I look back, and wonder, wow, was I really part of all that? That for me is the best aspect of the creative process, when the community comes together, and when the characters and world take on lives of their own and begin to guide everybody together.
All of you are part of this world now, you have lived in and helped build it. You are part of a long chain of crews, dragon powers, Dragon Priests, and approaches to life that, like the history of Dragon City, have led here. It's a fantastic honor that you continue to explore and expand the history and world of Dragon Booster.
While much of the show still holds up today, one of the things I'm most happy about is the basic message that we can all be superheroes as long as we realize that true superpowers only work for moments, and that they only come out when we're genuinely balanced with ourselves and those around us. I'm super honored how the show has kept so many fans for so long.
Thank you and of course, thanks Beau!
Release the Dragon!

Okay, everybody relax—I wrote this random crack Steddie fic where Steve was a writer and I wrote this from his point of view and I recently reread it after a long, long time and I was floored so enjoy.
Also it is a present-day set crack fic just to clear up time inconsistencies.
Atlantis.
When I was 10, my parents took me to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida. I’d been to Disney World a hundred times by then, knew what the air would smell like and how the waves would sound licking the shore right beside the needlessly expensive condo we’d rent in Daytona. I expected roller coasters and cotton candy and to be sick with exhaustion by the end of it, trailing behind my booze-ridden parents, watching other kids get lifted on shoulders, fireman carried, cradled. Sometimes I walked slower than I felt, hoping one of them would have grown so annoyed of begging me to hurry, that they would lift me instead.
They never did.
Instead of a theme park, I got space. Thirty-minute presentations of one spacecraft or another—Apollo 8, Apollo 17, Apollo 11, the Challenger, the Columbia. Tears rolled down my face as we wandered through exhibits of dead astronauts, failures, fuck-ups.
But I cried harder at the successes—the cheers of the control room when Apollo 8 successfully launched, the testimonial of Gene Cernan about being the last man to have touched the moon, and Neil Armstrong himself confiding in the camera, all for a silly visitor center.
I cried the entire day. I hadn’t been able to explain it, and my mother took to believing I was scared of it all. She scolded my father the whole hour it took to get back to Daytona, convinced I had been frightened at the implication of the universe being so vast.
She never failed to misunderstand me.
If there was anything I understood, it was vastness. The echoing hallways of our four-story house, my king-sized bed, the hollow place inside me that burned bigger each time my father left for a business trip, mother in tow. At a certain point, they started forgetting to hire babysitters.
Just me and the house, my own black hole.
It’s hard to comprehend how big a super heavy-lift launch vehicle is until you’re standing beneath it. My legs weren’t long or fast enough to run the length of it. I slowed to a jog half-way, and walked to the tip of the launch escape system. Then I turned around to look for my parents, and they were gone.
I didn’t panic. I knew I would find them at the nearest supply of alcohol—but not just yet. For now it was me and Saturn V, this monstrous thing, it’s vastness like a mirror. One, two, three, four, five impossible structures that might’ve fused into one had it been launched, four that might’ve been abandoned, and one that might’ve returned home. A fraction of what it had been.
My mother always turned up drunk, my father, tired. He would say something of being jet-lagged, and retire. My mother would giggle and invite her friends to the house so she could boast of all her thrilling adventures. Sometimes I wondered if they remembered they had a son at all.
The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex has grown in the time since I’ve been there, most notably in their addition of the Atlantis, a spacecraft that traveled in and out of space on nearly 30 round trips. It was the first spacecraft of its kind—reusable. Returnable. Designed with the capacity to come back whole, warm with information, not lacking in love.
I’d like to stand beneath it one day. I’d like to see what I couldn’t when I was ten, to know that these wonderful metal creatures can come back whole.
And that it wasn’t my fault the others could not.
I’m off to cry now, thanks for reading :’)

Kingdom Hearts 4 - Thoughts, Predictions and Ramblings
I've had a mountain of thoughts collecting in my brain since Melody of Memory but I never could find a way to express them properly. Before I knew it UX had ended, Dark Road came and ended and now Missing Link is on it's way and the only thing I can think is how this all ties together and will lead into Kingdom Hearts 4 and the series going forward. I decided not to wait any longer, sorry if I can't present a coherent post here but I'd rather get all these thoughts out than let them fester any longer! 😆
Melody of Memory
Thanks to MoM's ending we know Riku ventures to Quadratum alone to find Sora, Kairi stays behind to train with Aqua and Donald and Goofy head to the Underworld to most likely ask Hades about Sora's whereabouts.
With Riku, I predict we'll get a Dream Drop style in KH4 where we switch back and forth between him and Sora, though I doubt they'll drop this time and will be very much awake. (Soriku stans we in there ayeee!! DDD 2!!).
If Yozora stands in Sora's way (whether initually or eventually) and traps him in crystal as the bad ending of Limit Cut suggested, that means Riku will most likely be the one to free him. And booooy the implications that has, especially when you consider Disney films like Atlantis the Lost Empire and Frozen where the main character had to fight for their loved one to free them from their frozen state. It would be a glorious parallel and would make for a tender moment between the two, something I believe is much needed after Riku was left out of sharing the Paopu Fruit and his rescue was forgotten by Sora. Not to mention Riku himself believed nothing he did was enough for Sora, not becoming a Keyblade Master, nor becoming a leader amongst his peers or even connecting himself to Sora and dreaming of his exact location for a year after being lost. Riku needs affirmation that he's needed by Sora, and Sora needs a reminder of who his Light is.
I love the idea of Kairi making potential friends outside the trio, thus I love the idea of her spending time with and possibly bonding with Aqua. Hopefully after their training sessions, Kairi will finally become a Team Player no longer dumped to the side. I think this will give her character the desperate boost it needs.
And finally, thanks to context from Dark Road we now know the dead can be contacted from the Underworld. However, I feel only those whose hearts are in The Final World can be contacted, not those whose hearts transferred to the other side of reality. I'd be surprised if Hades could reach hearts even on the opposite side of reality, but I won't completely rule it out. The Underworld could become useful for contacting Nameless Star in the future so they don't have to keep traveling to The Final World, and her human form may be revealed here (as we saw in Dark Road, the dead reappear in their original human forms rather than in the Final World's transparent stars). I expect that her human form won't look the same as her Quadratum form since it appears the "Somebody" who unalived her took "everything about her" which may include her original body, similarly to how Yozora's body was also taken and his heart was replaced.
Only time will tell and I can't wait for KH4 to come! When the next trailer drops I'll probably melt into a bowl of ice cream.🫠
Dark Road / Missing Link
Dark Road had a LOT of content in it but what I want to take away most from it for future titles is reincarnation (player character) and family lineages (Xehanort being Ephemer's great-great grandson or so) which we know will be touched upon in Missing Link (per an interview with Nomura). This can lead to an interesting dynamic between all the characters as we discover who comes from what lineage and which characters may even be distant relatives.
Aside from Xehanort, everyone else's lineage is up in the air aside from one other character, Riku. If the Crown Necklace Theory proves true then that means Riku, who had the Crown Necklace since he was a baby, is of royal blood through one of his parents or at least a descendant of a prestigious family. Given his silver hair and blue eyes, the only line I can imagine he comes from is Ephemer's. And this is also shown through Xehanort who descends from Ephemer and is also constantly represented with a crown.
Tumblr media
If Ephemer's line are represented by crowns it's fair to assume he and his descendants are considered "royalty". And what could this mean for Riku in KH4 and the future? As Kingdom Hearts characters are constantly represented by Chess Pieces, the Ephemer descendants are the King pieces of the story so to speak. It all adds up when you consider Riku was not only initially the Keyblade's Chosen and the initial bearer of the Crown Necklace but now Yozora has seemingly come into the series as the opposite King on the chest board from the dimension of fantasy. And who does Yozora resemble most? Riku. Learning Riku's lineage is important as it could very well further point to Riku being the "True King" of the Kingdom Hearts dimension. It'd all tie together. But I have a theory on the Verum Rex, Falsus Rex discussion that I will save for a future time.
Aside from Riku, there aren't any other characters with even a hint about who they might be.
The only other candidate for Royalty is Kairi, not only being a Princess of Heart but she was raised in a castle by her Grandmother who may have been Queen of Radiant Garden, or they were at least of a high social class. If Kairi also comes from Royalty, is it the same Royal line as Ephemer's descendants? Her relationship with Xehanort seems to have started when she was only 4, he chose her as the vessel who would find and connect with the Keyblade Wielder for a reason. It would be interesting if he chose Kairi due to her being from his family line. The only evidence I have that points Kairi to being a Descendant lf Ephemer aside from possibly being royalty is that her Grandmother is the one who retells the story of how the Dandelions scattered across the worlds in search of light. Her Grandmother may have learned that from her ancestors, one being Ephemer, but it's also possible it was just a common children's story told to everyone regardless of lineage. But all of this assumes she descends from Ephemer and not a potential secondary Royal line. Her family is only from Radiant Garden as far as we know not Scala ad Caelum/Daybreak Town so it's very possible she has nothing to do any of the Dandelions and simply descends from the (speculated) Radiant Garden Royal family. Only time will tell and I'm very excited to learn more about her and her family.
As for Sora, there are no hints about his family lineage at all, aside from one line from his mother far back in KH1 we don't know anything about his father or any other family members (if we don't focus on the manga which mentions his uncle). He doesn't have a crown necklace of his own like Riku, he doesn't come from a castle like Kairi so we can assume he doesn't come from any Royalty. For Sora, I can only make an educated guess and I think he may come from Brain's line. If Xehanort and Riku come from Ephemer's line and Eraqus is rumored to have come from Brain's line, then I would expect Sora to also come from Brain's line since Eraqus is to Xehanort what Sora is to Riku, in a sense.
Also in learning which characters descend from which line, we can discover who is related to who. If Riku does in fact also directly descend from Ephemer then that would mean he and Xehanort are relatives - distant cousins. And the same would be true for Eraqus and Sora if they both descend from Brain. And if Kairi descends from either of these lines, that would make her a distant relative of either Sora or Riku. Her being distant cousins with Riku would be very interesting to their relationship, but her being distant cousins with Sora...well, talk about awkward.
But I'm jumping way ahead here. We'll have to wait for Missing Link to come out to see who comes from what family and I absolutely can't wait to see how it all plays out and how it ties to the plot of Kingdom Hearts 4 and the series' future!

Barbie as Rapunzel (2002)
Tumblr media
I don’t know if I can do this. How many movies are there? I sat through this. Did I watch it? Not fully. Look, I love the story of Rapunzel so much, and this ain’t it, friends. I’d been waiting for Disney’s take on this fairy tale for years, and this came first. Disney took this, chewed it up, spit it back out and made it magical. Tangled is where it’s at.
From the beginning I thought the animation was a vast improvement already, but boy was I mistaken.
Animation
Nope. Nope. That Rabbit is the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. He looks fake and then has those hyper-realistic eyes. NO. My main note is that the animation looks like a bad Sims game. That works really well for a video game. Not for a MOVIE.
A Strong Point
I’m being generous here. The Barbie movie studio really knows that they can follow a formula and that they can create a story that would mildly entertain toddlers. Once again, Barbie tells Kelly a story to encourage her to follow her dreams and face something she’s afraid of. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, I guess? The music was also kind of pretty.
Sidekicks
We’ve already mentioned that freaky ass rabbit. The dragon, however, looked cool, but looked kind of like Spyro? Gothel’s sidekick weasel cat didn’t work. Creepy as shit.
Voice Acting
A wild Anjelica Huston appears as Gothel, which yes, is the fairy tale name of Rapunzel’s witch mother, and this wasn’t unique to Disney. The dragon was voiced by Cree Summer, who also played Kida in Atlantis: the Lost Empire, but also Susie in Rugrats. I knew her voice instantly. Props again to Kelly Sheridan for being Barbie and committing.
Storyline
Rapunzel is an artist, but Tangled does it better. Rapunzel and Prince Stefan live happily ever after. What the hell is even this mangled version of this fairy tale anyway?
I don’t know how much more of this I can take.
Yours truly,
K

The Call of the Heart
To go with @writing-heiress Fairytale/Disney AU. I decided to go with the Idia X Estella: Atlantis AU for this.
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~
The girls knew they didn’t have a choice in this matter. If they hadn’t come with Silas then he will kill their father. The only parental they have left in their lives after their mother died all those years ago when their home sank thousands of miles down into the sea. Estella, Oriane, Silas, Epel and Idia all stood in a room that was hidden in the throne room. Silas walked to the edge of a small yet deep pond and looked above him. In the center, high up in the air, were floating stones with carvings of the princesses ancestors. Kings and queens who once ruled the land. They were protecting a large cyan energy sphere.
They would weep if they saw how their kingdom has fallen. The lead mercenary kicked a small rock into the crystal clear water. The cyan turned to crimson as it sensed a disturbance. He looked up and many crimson beams start circling around the room. “Come on, let’s get this over with.” Epel said. “I don’t like this place.” He had warning bells going off in his head and a pit was growing bigger in his stomach by the second.
“Alright, Shroud.” Silas said. “What’s next?”
Idia nervously held the Shepherd’s Journal and started reading out loud. “O-Okay. There’s a g-giant crystal hovering a h-hundred fifty f-feet above the o-our heads over a b-bottom less p-pit of w-water…”
What he didn’t realize is that when he was speaking, the lights turned to their original color when a beam landed on Estella’s crystal necklace. Oriane noticed and grabbed her sister’s hand. She was getting a bad feeling about this. It was all too familiar to her. The crystal started floating above her neck… as if guiding her. “Interesting.” She mumbled in her native tongue. Her eyes started glowing that same cyan as the light over took the pupils and irises. Oriane held her hand tightly.
“No.” Oriane muttered. “Estella no.”
“Then move it.” Silas ordered.
“I don’t even know how to move it.” Idia said, losing his stutter the more angry he got. “I don’t even know what’s holding it up there!”
“ESTELLA!!” Oriane shouted once her younger sister started walking towards the crystal. She held onto her hand for as long as she could until Epel grabbed her hand and pried it off. “SISTER NO!” The other men stopped when they heard the older princess yell. Silas held his hand out and stopped Idia when he went to run after her. That cry that Oriane released… it was one Idia knew. All too well. They all watched as Estella walked the the edge of the pond.
“Talk to me Shroud and Princess.” Silas said. “What’s happening?”
Oriane just stood there in silence. ‘Not again.’ She thought. ‘Please no.’
“Look,” Idia said pointing to the page in the book. “All it says here i-is that crystal is a-alive, somehow. I don’t k-know how to explain it, it’s their deity, it’s their power source.”
“Speak English professor.”
“It’s a p-part of them, they’re a part of it. I’m doing the best I can here!”
“Well do better.” The mercenary pulled his gun out.
“Well, why don’t you translate and I’LL WAVE THE GUN AROUND!”
The argument stopped when they heard Estella speak. Her voice sounded disoriented as she spoke and she even turned to the group. “All will be well Idia Shroud and older sister. Be not afraid.” She said.
“Let my sister go!” Oriane yelled. She ran forward to grab her sister but Silas grabbed her arms and held them tightly to her side. Idia gave a shy smile though he felt dread rise in his stomach. Oriane’s voice held the tone of a heartbroken sibling.
“What did they say?” He asked as he held the struggling princess.
“I-I didn’t catch it.” Idia mumbled.
Oriane stopped in her tracks. Her blood turned cold as her little sister started walking on the water. “NO! ESTELLA NO!” She screamed. They all watched as the younger princess was walking towards the crystal. They cyan beam is still on her, she’s what it wanted.
Estella walked until she was directly under the crystal. The stone heads started moved away from the crystal. They all stared in shock and amazement. Oriane’s eyes started watering and a tear fell from her eye. The multiple cyan beams combined into one the moment it sensed that the crystal was near. A bright flash of cyan light filled the area as Estella closed her eyes. A larger beam came from the crystal and shined down on the girl.
“My daughter.” She heard a voice say. “It’s time to join us.”
She started floating up towards the crystal. Her hair lifted above her head and rippled in the air. Her necklace was the guiding force to the massive sphere.
“SISTER!” Oriane screamed.
Estella floated into the sphere until her body couldn’t be seen anymore. The stones started spinning around the sphere as its power was being transported into the girl. The faster they went, the stronger the wind they made. It wasn’t long before a cyan silhouette was in the center where the crystal once was. It was as if Estella’s body had turned into her people’s power source. A ripple of cyan light flashed through the area— the transformation was complete.
Everyone else stood in shock at what they had just witnessed. Estella started floating to the ground, slowly like a leaf. She landed on the water’s surface, with a circle of cyan light around her. “Estella.” Idia whispered. He started to take a step out towards her but Silas grabbed his shoulder.
“Easy there, Lover Boy.” He taunted.
“Estella.” Idia said, a bit louder.
“Little sister.” Oriane said.
They’re only response from her came in the form of her opening her eyes. The light had overtaken them completely. “No.” Oriane mumbled as she let out a wail. ‘Not again.’
Estella started walking back towards the group. The stone heads started falling from the ceiling and splashed when they collided with the water. The splashes were slipping away from her as if she was in a protective sphere from the water. When she got to the group, Silas held out a hand to touch her but was stopped.
“DON’T!” Oriane yelled.
“Don’t touch her.” Idia said. He knows by the look of Oriane’s face that he’s faced something familiar; an older sibling losing the younger one.
I'd love to hear about your Marvel OC if you want to share!
So her name is Peggy Barnes-Rogers and she exists in my Marvel Universe I made up called Earth 904, which has elements of the MCU, comics, and animated series. Basically me just taking whatever I liked from each.
She came to be after Striker Labs kidnapped Jean Grey and tried to clone her, because in my universe the Phoenix Force can be passed on through offspring (or in this case, genetic material). Jean Grey escaped and didn't realize they had her genetic material. But they did.
For years they worked on creating clones of Jean Grey, and they were finally successful. They created a few viable embryos and incubated them in a lab until they were fully formed fetuses, almost ready to be born.
Then, the Avengers found the new lab site and invaded it. In the process, the lab began to burn, and only one incubation tube survived. It cracked, and fell open, and all the embryonic fluid leaked out, and the newborn baby took her first breaths.
Now, the Avengers had a newborn baby on their hands, with no idea what kind of powers or lineage she had. All they knew was that they found her in an evil science lab, so who knows what it could have been. They also know they can't just let this baby become another lab rat.
Meanwhile, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes were married and happy. Bucky's younger sister, Becky, just passed away, and Bucky talks about how he had always had a parental streak, and how he had raised his younger siblings at times. He mentions that before WW2, he'd always wanted to be a father.
So, it was like a match made in heaven.
Here's this baby, with potential superpowers or alien powers or who knows what, and two former Avengers who know how to handle superpowered beings, and also want to be parents.
Steve and Bucky adopt the baby and name her Peggy, after Peggy Carter.
Peggy grows and indeed, she does have superpowers. She's the new host of the Phoenix Force. She has all the powers Jean Grey has, but because she grew up in a supportive environment that prepared her for what life she may live, the Phoenix Force didn't overtake her, nor become destructive like it did with Jean Grey.
Peggy joins the X Men when she's older, and eventually forms her own team with Erika, Magneto's granddaughter; Kiara and Tana, T'Challa and Storm's daughters; Helena, Baron Zemo's daughter; Stella, Magneto's granddaughter; and Anne, Tony Stark's daughter. (Anne later leaves and becomes a villain known as the Iron Maiden).
Later, Peggy discovers that the Phoenix Force is only one of four Forces, which take on the forms of the four chemical elements of life. The three other hosts of the Forces are Celeste, Emma Frost's clone, who is the host of the Diamond Force [Carbon]; Sooraya Qadir (Dust), who is the host of the Earth Force [Nitrogen] ; and Tana of Wakanda, who is the host of the Water Force [Hydrogen] (the same Force in Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire, because in my universe Storm is descended of Queen Kida). The Phoenix Force is representative of Oxygen.
Peggy, Sooraya, Tara, and Celeste learn that the Four Elemental Forces were meant to be the guardians of life, and that the four are most powerful when they are together and fight as one. Thus, whenever there is a cataclysmic threat, the four join forces.
Peggy eventually gets a younger brother, Jürgen/Jamie, an alien hybrid of a Titan and an Asgardian who was rejected from both societies because he was a hybrid of the commonly enemy societies.
Peggy's girlfriend is Kiara of Wakanda, who is the new Black Panther after reclaiming her throne from Shuri, who expelled Kiara and Tina from Wakanda when they were children after starting a coup that assassinated T'Challa and Storm.
Peggy, Tana, Kiara, Jürgen, Anne, Helena, Stella, and more have been OCs of mine for a very, very long time. Obviously their stories are looks have evolved as I have grown, but the basic essence of them remains the same.
Amoreena | chapter four
Tumblr media
Chapter Four
summary: Heaven is a real place and it's located exactly 14.6 miles away from the FBI, Quantico Headquarters. Off behind a small park, under a fantastical willow tree surrounded by wildflowers, in every colour young minds can imagine.
Don't forget, heaven also comes with angels.
Warnings: fluff, hurt/comfort, depressed spencer, reader has a daughter, falling in love, strangers to lovers, library smut, oral (female receiving) lots and lots of fluff
word count: 3.9k
from the beginning <3
Everyone at work was very understanding. Almost all of them saw it coming, he was taking more sick days than normal and he wasn’t putting up a fight anymore when the 30 days was required to take rolled around. They were profilers after all.
He arrives on Thursday morning to pack his desk. The team is finally home and all together to wish him well on his future journey, giving him hugs and kisses as they each visited his desk.
They had already replaced him, Will LaMontagne was giving the FBI a shot, finally. Spending more time with JJ, the kids were old enough now to accept both of them working. And Kate Callahan was back, now that her baby wasn’t a baby anymore either.
Even Penelope and Derek showed up, bringing a cake that said ‘happy retirement’ written across the frosting. They were happy for him, they shared the same excitement he had. There was a thrill in his eyes again as they asked him about his plans.
“Tell us about this Y/N you met,” Emily cut into the laughter to get to the serious topics.
“I’ve been going to the park a lot recently and I found this little reading nook by a pond. She was there with her daughter and they invited me over to their picnic,” he realized how fake it all sounded as he continued to speak. “Her daughter is wonderful and super smart, I took them to the Smithsonian on Sunday and I’m completely smitten.”
Everyone swooned, happy to see him finally finding someone that makes him gush like this. It had been a very, very long time since Spencer has told any of them about a person, let alone someone he was in love with.
“She is wonderful,” Penelope added, “she makes the best tea and she lives in a literal Disney movie.”
Spencer laughed, “yeah she does. They probably read more books than I have, they make so many references all the time and they even dress up for what they’re reading, it’s amazing.”
They were amazed by how giddy he was, unable to stop smiling at him, “here we dressed up for the museum, I was milo from Atlantis and she was the old man in Tarzan,” he pulled his phone from his pocket to show them the photo.
It was his background now, Y/N sent it to him when he finally went back to his place Monday night, knowing he’d miss them. Not wanting him to be alone.
He was beyond proud to show them the photo, beaming from ear to ear as they all complimented his attire.
“She looks like you,” Kate added, “must be the genius gene,” she added, making awkward eye contact with JJ as they both clocked it.
“She’s exactly like me, that’s why Y/N likes having me around, it’s good for Amoreena to feel normal with the way our brains work,” he spoke about her like she was his own. Forever grateful to have her in his life.
“So when are you proposing?” Matt teased him. Knowing the feeling of love like this all too well with his perfect wife and a handful of children.
“I’m not trying to jinx anything,” Spencer admitted. “I actually have a job interview at the Library she works at later, so I’ll be around here a lot more.”
“He’ll be moved in by the end of the month,” Tara smiled, proud of him and the courage it takes to follow your heart.
“I’m going to miss you guys,” he presses his lips together softly, nodding as he avoids eye contact with them. “But you can call me whenever you need my brain, I guess.”
Hugs were exchanged as Spencer had to leave, Derek even offered to drive him back to his apartment to help with 4 boxes of books from his desk, and to have a bit of a talk like they always do.
“It’s surprisingly easy to be a dad, all you have to do is be there and love them,” Derek shared a tidbit of advice
“She told me she doesn’t mind me being like Amoreena’s dad, but I don’t think I can yet. I want her to decide when she wants me in that role.”
Spencer explains his feelings the easiest to Derek. Like he was already in his mind and knew the thoughts before he said them, Derek was never mad or disappointed in him. He loved him fully, and Spencer loved him right back.
“Like when you chose Gideon?”
Spencer can only nod, it’s still too sad to think about him being gone. “You know what it’s like, you love your father but there are other people in your life who fit the role better.”
“Yeah,” Derek agreed. “You’re going to be great, regardless of the name she uses when she thinks of you.”
“Thank you,” Spencer smiled as they pulled up to his apartment, “you should bring Hank to meet the animals this weekend sometime.”
“He’d love that,” Derek smiled back at him, patting his shoulder lightly. “I’m really proud of you.”
“I wouldn’t have been able to do it if you didn’t first,” he admits. “You’re a strong man who decided to put his happiness first, I can be too.”
“You sure as hell can,” Derek wrapped him up in one last hug before sending him off to live that best life he was talking about.
The only person who didn’t know yet was his mother. He wasn’t sure how to tell her, he knew she’d be proud of him regardless but that anxiety of disappointing her never went away even now that he was 40.
“Spencer!”
“Hey mom,” he smiled when she picked up. “How are you?”
“I’m fantastic, Marge and I are going on a walk later to see some ducks that were born, I really love it here Spencer,” he could hear it in her voice. She was much more joyful when she was surrounded by friends.
“I’m glad to hear it.”
“you sound happy, what’s going on?”
She was his mother, after all, she could know exactly how he’s feeling from just hearing him breathe or being in the same room as him. It was like a superpower, she always knew what was going on.
“I met someone,” he can’t help but smile. “And I quit the FBI to have a family.”
“You’re kidding?” He couldn’t read her tone, not sure if she was surprised or disappointed.
“Her name is Y/N, she has a 7-year-old daughter named Amoreena who is exactly like how I was as a child, you’d really like them,” he explains and he can hear his mother's smile from his end of the phone.
“I would love to meet them, you can bring them to visiting hours next Tuesday?” Diana offered, genuinely happy for him in a way that made his heart burst.
“I’ll see if they’re free and I’ll let you know.”
“I love you, Spencer,” she reminded him. “It’s nice to hear you’re happy, that’s all I’ve ever wanted for you.”
“I love you too, thank you, mom, for everything.”
She hangs up before they can get too emotional, leaving Spencer inside his sad little apartment all by himself. Taking the opportunity to pack his overnight bag for Y/N and pick out some books from his collection to show Amoreena.
There’s an envelope sticking out of one of his books that manages to catch his attention, taking it out to see his name written on it in Gideon’s handwriting. He almost forgot he had this, how important the words were.
Spencer,
I knew it would be you who came to the cabin to check on me. I’m sorry the explanation couldn’t be better, Spencer. I’m sorry it doesn’t make more sense, but I’ve already told you. I just don’t understand any of it anymore.
I guess I’m just looking for it again, for the belief I had in college, the belief I had when I first met Sara and it all seemed so right.
The belief in happy endings. When you find that, never let it go, Spencer.
Don’t let this job do to you what it did to me, get out and get a life when you can. I have faith in you, till I see you again, take care, son.
Gideon
He walked over to the window then, seeing a beautiful red and brown bird perched on his fire escape. He couldn’t help but smile, “I found my Sara, thank you,” he whispers to the bird who turns its head to the side before flying off.
Gideon always did have the best timing and the best advice.
“Y/N, your one o’clock is here to see you,” the receptionist at the Library said over the phone, hanging up and returning her attention to Spencer, “she’ll be with you in a moment.”
“Doctor Reid,” he hears her voice as she rounds the corner, appearing behind a stack of books in the most beautiful blue dress he’s ever seen. “Lovely to see you again.”
“You too,” he smiles.
“Right this way,” she can’t help but smile as she escorts him to her office.
“I don’t normally consider people who don’t send in a resume, but I have a feeling you’re going to be good at this,” she teased him as he sat at her desk.
“Allison is going on maternity leave in a few weeks, so you won’t start until she has the baby. If you’re serious about wanting this position, it’s only Monday through Thursday, 9 to 2:30.”
“You’re not going to ask me anything?”
“I don’t know if you know this, but the literary historian and I get to spend a lot of time together, I’d rather hire someone I know I already like,” she smiled again. “And it would be nice to see you every day without a 7-year-old taking all your attention away from me.”
“You just want to live out the fantasy of kissing someone in the encyclopedia section, don’t you?” He teased her right back, making her blush. “I knew it.”
“Sue me!” She laughed, and he finally understood what tinker bell meant when she said farries are born from the purest laughter.
He was in love with her right then and there, he was sure of it.
It had been under a week and yet as he stared at her, hearing her wonderful laughter and seeing her beautiful smile, knowing she wanted to spend time with him, that she genuinely liked him and none of this was one-sided, it made him fall harder than he thought he could.
“Come on then,” he stands abruptly, taking her hand and pulling her out the door.
She tries to giggle quietly as she follows him all the way back to the quietest section of the library. Most of the books on the shelves didn’t even have bar codes because they haven’t been checked out since the 60’s, no one needs them but they can’t seem to part with them.
She backs up against the shelf and pulls him into her space, he drops her hands and holds her face instead, looking at her beautiful eyes as they sparkled in the fluorescent lighting.
“I was expecting this to be hungrier than this when I imagined it all for all these years,” she whispers, biting her lip to force her smile back.
“You’re just so fucking beautiful,” is all he can say, brushing her cheeks with his thumbs lightly a few times before finally placing his lips against hers, ever so gently.
Her hands stretched around his back, pulling him in closer till their bodies are pressed together and then she’s kissing him deeper. Breathing in through her nose like she’s trying to keep him there forever, her fingernails dig into his shirt and he knows she wants more.
He slid his thigh between hers, opening his mouth to give her all the access she wanted and letting her take control of the speed. She wasn’t kidding when she said she expected it to be hungrier. She was kissing him like it was the first time she has had contact with another human being in years, and it just might have been. She said she was single for a while before Amoreena, probably the whole time since as well.
“Spencer,” she took a moment to gasp for air, breathing against his lips as he did the same. “Can we?”
He kisses along her jaw then, moving towards her ear to whisper, “do what? Use your words.”
“Anything, just touch me please, god it’s been 12 years,” she begged as quietly as possible, tugging at his hair as he nibbled on her earlobe.
He kissed down her neck making his way towards her chest. Holding her by the hips now, she arched her back into the shelf as he kissed all the way to where her dress started to cover her breasts but he didn’t stop. Kissing over her clothes as he dropped down to his knees in front of her.
He undid his tie, slipping it off his neck and handing it to her, “in case you need to scream into something.”
She held it in her hand for a second, registering what he just said and moaning softly in response as she held it closer to her lips, he took that as a yes and slipped under her dress.
She was wearing just a pair of regular cut pink underwear, not expecting this in the slightest when she got ready this morning. He kissed her over top of the fabric, spreading her legs so that he could kiss the insides of her thighs as she tried to desperately grind into his face. grazing his teeth against her skin as she shivers, thighs shaking in anticipation.
He kisses right where her clit should be under the fabric, knowing he’s correct when she whimpers around the tie he handed her. It's muffled and adorable as he kisses her again and again, knowing she wants more and teasing her gently.
He pulls her panties to the side, mesmerized by how perfect she is for only a second before returning to the task at hand. Being the first person to pleasure her in years, wanting her to have the best time possible.
With one hand he holds her panties back, using his other to slowly swipe a single finger through her folds to see just how wet she was. Smirking against her thigh as he’s able to slip right in.
“Please,” he hears her whisper, lifting the dress up so she could look at what he’s doing.
“Such a good girl for me,” he pressed the words against her skin.
He spreads her legs even further, resting one of them on his shoulder as he dives in, sucking her clit into his mouth abruptly as he pumps his single finger in and out. She jerks her hips at the sudden contact, stuffing the tie in her mouth and biting down as she whimpers.
He knows what he’s doing, where all the pleasure spots are and what feels the best on most women. Searching around and trying different tongue movements, memorizing the sounds she makes and attempting to hear them again and again, knowing it means she’s enjoying herself.
That’s all he wanted, to please her. Not even realizing how hard he was as he continues to eat her out furiously in the back corner of the DC Public Library. He forgets they’re even in public entirely as he moans against her clit, sending shockwaves through her body.
She’s quaking then, holding onto the top of his head with one hand as the other grips a shelf. She’s panting into the material of the tie, the hot breath making its way through the fabric and stopping the whorish moans he knew she’d make. It had been too long since someone treated her right.
He added a second finger then, wanting to push her over the edge as he curled them, finding her g spot and caressing it with every thrust of his fingers. She clenched around him then, a high-pitched noise left her mouth as she finished around him.
He couldn’t help but smirk, re-moving his fingers and cleaning them off in his mouth. Releasing them with a pop before dragging his tongue along her one last time. Gathering up everything she released and placing her panties back over her nicely.
He kissed over her underwear one last time before fixing her dress and standing up, “did I manage to fulfill the dream?”
She couldn’t help but laugh, looking like she was coming down from a real high, not just an orgasm. She pulled him in close and held onto him for dear life as she continued to catch her breath, and then her hand started to wander.
“Nope,” Spencer whispered, moving her hand away from his aching cock. “As much as I want to, I’d rather fuck you at home.”
“Home huh?” She teased him, kissing his cheek softly as she pulled back.
"I love you," he whispers against her ear, without a fear in the world that she didn't feel the same way.
"I love you too, Spencer."
They couldn’t stop smiling at each other, it felt surreal to be this happy. He kissed her a few more times, staying hidden in the back corner until the blood in his body let this dick and went back to where it was supposed to be.
She just held him in her arms, leaning back against the shelves as they kissed softly, running her hands through his hair gently, over and over. She whispered a few thank you’s to him, letting him know it was everything she waited for.
It was truly perfect.
Amoreena was so happy to see him back at the farm when she got off the bus, she missed him during the few days he wasn’t there.
She asked him to help with her homework, her teacher assigning them an “all about me” project to showcase their growth at the end of the year ceremony. It was almost June, she only had a few weeks left before she was off for the summer and free to show him around the whole kingdom.
Y/N brought out a box of craft supplies and a collection of photos. Showing Spencer every single moment of her and Amoreena’s life.
From her first sonogram to the first bump photo, she had and every maternity shot on the farm you could think of, to the day she was born, her first bath, first steps, chocolate cake shoved on her nose at her first birthday, everything. He felt like he watched her grow up in the blink of an eye, staring at all the photos while Y/N and Amoreena made a plan for her project.
She did look a lot like him, in some instances, she even looked like his mom. There was a look Diana would get when she was intrigued with something, or when she was trying to figure something out. She’d bite her tongue and tilt her head, and it was exactly what Amoreena did.
He never thought he’d see a child-like himself this early, he always expected someone to contact him at 18 and surprise him like Rossi. He really never, ever thought he'd have a child in his life who he was blessed with watching grow up. He never believed someone would have a kid so much like him and allow him to see the world through their eyes. He was amazed by how lucky he got, to be brought into an already happy family that wanted him, they didn’t just need him.
There was no need for a father in Amoreena’s life, she was happily living her life with her grandparents and her mother, explaining to him that she had a bunch of aunts and uncles, plus 15 cousins and they all lived close too. Her life was full of people to love her, and yet she wanted Spencer to love her too.
“Can I put the photo of us at the museum on here too?” She asked Y/N, looking at Spencer to see if he was okay with it too. “I already told my friends that you’re my dad.”
He felt like he couldn’t breathe, he didn’t want to cry in front of her so instead he just stopped all movement inside of his body and held it in. Looking at Y/N who was also a little emotional as Amoreena went back to looking through the photos.
Amoreena didn’t even notice how their expressions changed, she didn’t understand the weight of the words as she said them. She was oblivious to the hole in Spencer’s heart that she was filling with glitter glue, making him feel like he was whole again.
“Yeah,” he finally managed to speak. “I’d love to be on your project.”
“I know you said we don’t need dads but I kinda want one,” Amoreena’s soft expression made his heart melt even more. He was putty in her hands, willing to be whatever she wanted from him as long as he could.
“When did you say that?” Y/N asked softly, confused as to where she was when they had a conversation.
“The other morning at breakfast, um, my father left when I was little. It was just me and my wonderful mother until I was 21, then I found someone to call Dad. His name was Jason Gideon, he was my mentor and he made he feel like I was smart and loved,” he smiled, letting her know he genuinely meant it. “There’s a big difference between being a father and being someone's dad.”
“What’s that?” Amoreena’s innocent mind running wild as she tried to figure out his meaning.
“Anyone can be a father when two adults make a baby,” he said softly, making eye contact with Y/N as she blushed. Knowing where he was going with this. “But dads are special, they’re the people who are supposed to make you feel safe and loved. A person who you can turn to for advice and know he’ll love you no matter what you have to say. Dad’s are supposed to love you forever, regardless of what happens in life. Just like your mom does already.”
Amoreena leaned into his chest, pressing her head against him softly. He wrapped his arms around her gently, giving her the tiniest hug he’s ever given. “I pick you then, you’re the best guy I know and I think that means you’d be a good dad.”
Y/N silently cried, getting up from the table and walking into the kitchen so Amoreena wouldn’t see her sob. Spencer tried to widen his eyes so the tears he was generating would slip back into his tear ducts. Not wanting to cry as she held him.
“I’d love to be your dad,” he whispered, kissing her head softly as she held him tighter. “But first I’ve gotta check on your mom,” he whispered into her hair. Watching her pull away and look for where she was.
“Okay,” Amoreena shrugged, returning to her project as he wandered into the kitchen.
She was leaning against the counter when he walked in, her dress pulled up over her face as she cried into the material. Wiping her face as Spencer walked in and looking at him with the happiest smile.
She was laughing into her tears then, shaking her head as she sobbed, “why am I crying?”
He laughed then too, pulling her into a hug and spinning her around gently as she kept laughing. Her face buried into his neck as she smiled, he set her down gently so he could pull her into a kiss.
Her cheeks were all wet as he held her face, peppering kisses to her lips as they both tried to stop smiling.
“I’m going to miss hearing her call you Spencer,” Y/N whispered.
“Me too,” he giggled again. “But dad does have a good ring to it.”
i was tagged by the lovelies @glittertrail @hannahlovesdance07 and @janeyjacke to post my 9 favorite movies, thank you so much💕
✨no pressure tags ✨ @moonshotsx @missjanjie @inthehytes @sapphicsupremacist @stillgoode @sweetestberryofthebunch @petitmonde and anyone who wants to do it!!
i'll put the titles + a lil explanation on why they're here under the cut just cause i got way too into it deciding which movies to choose:
little miss sunshine -> very feel-good film, i watched it for the first time with my brother when things were not great at home and it helped a lot to make us feel better 💗plus it's super endearing in my opinion.
the handmaiden -> simply incredible, the plot twists, the cinematography, the romance??? crying throwing up truly. i could even say it's my all time favorite movie. i have a terrible hard time sitting down to watch movies, and the fact that i enjoyed watching this one so much while being so long just tells you how good it is.
but i'm a cheerleader -> i don't think i need to say anything but if you haven't seen it yet please do it's incredible, very gay very camp, kinda enemies to lovers vibes for a bit but then turns all soft? yes please!! plus, rupaul playing "straight", what more could you want??
brother bear -> my ultimate favorite movie as a kid, i watched it non-stop and would always be singing the main song, i must have really related to koda being the annoying youngest sibling to my brothers 😅 i loved the animations, the pretty colors and the story always got me emotional. i stand by that it's one of disney's best movies.
the rocky horror picture show -> a classic, it is such a wild story i love the plot twist at the end cause it's crazy and i'm in love with the songs. i also watched it with my brother for the first time one halloween and i'm so thankful he showed it to me, cause i only knew a few songs from it before.
hocus pocus -> another childhood favorite, i remember being obsessed with this movie and would be so happy when in october they always had it on in disney channel, i just find it very entertaining to watch, and i think i've seen it at least once a year since the first time i did.
elisa y marcela -> i cried so much the first time i watched it, idk i'm usually not one to watch historical lesbian movies cause they tend to be very slow and depressing (not saying this one didn't have sad bits cause it definitely had) but something about this one left such a lasting impression on me, that ending too!! plus the love story between these two!!
pride -> in terms of movies that make you feel all the feels this is it!! from joy to pure pain and sadness, to hysterically laughing, it has it all. it's based on true events (based cause right at the end they took artistic liberties with what actually happened) about a group of queer activists helping the striking miners during thatcher's government. i just love how they depict the friendships between the miners and the activists, it's so beautiful to me. probably the movie i've rewatched the most.
atlantis: the lost empire -> idk what to tell you, i loved movies about adventure when i was young, and the whole concept of atlantis was fascinating to me, plus i'm sure deep down i really loved rewatching the movie cause i had a crush on almost every character in it. also i remember rewatching it a lot during the summers with my cousins <3
May I request I Cross My Heart by George Strait with Helga Sinclair and a female reader?
I cross my heart / And promise to / Give all I've got to give / To make all your dreams come true
Fandom: Disney / Atlantis: The Lost Empire
A/N: I hope you like it!
Word count: 294
Tumblr media
The bridge blew up behind her, making Milo and Helga’s former workmates stranded in the City of Atlantis. She felt a slight tingle of regret and guilt, and glared at Rourke who seemed just as pissed as her as they drove towards the sleeping volcano. Rourke was pissed because he felt like his allies had betrayed him, and Helga felt like Rourke did wrong. What they were doing was wrong.
She knew she had been on it all the way through, stealing the Crystal, betraying Milo who trusted her and Rourke, slaughtering the people of Atlantis. She remembered seeing Milo for the first time, coming home soaking wet, blue-eyed and he didn’t doubt Helga’s intentions for a second. He just... trusted her. Maybe he sought for approval, that someone would finally believe him and that’s why he was so naive. Now she felt bad, but it was too late to turn back,
She just kept her thoughts on you, how you’ll be bathing in money for the rest of your life once she got her share. She wanted to make all your dreams come true, she had promised it to herself and you. She’d help you to get on your feet, make sure you would be happy. You had been living as poor all your life, and Helga wanted the best for you. You deserved to be happy. You deserved to wear something warm, use whatever accessories your heart desired, eat proper food and have access to the doctor.
That would make this horrible thing she did justified. She only wanted you to be happy and healthy, not having to worry about anything ever again. It would justify this. She would forget those faces she left behind eventually. She just tried to believe it.
The Bear Roots of Burbank Cartoons: A Lookback at Boo Boo Runs Wild
Tumblr media
5 years ago, [adult swim] aired the greatest of all Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episodes, “Boo Boo Runs Wild” (1999), on August 13th, 2016 A.D. at 4 AM.
Look and see, kids, how America’s not-so-average bear connects in the wide world of animation that produces many of the cartoons that you love in Burbank, Canada and more!
As and after I saw it, I knew that I found the greatest band of cartoonists out there, and that greatest band of cartoonists out there was none other than...
Tumblr media
Spümcø, whose many creatives would end up working at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Cartoon Network Studios, and many other popular Burbank and Canadian studios that made the cartoons I grew up and beyond watching.
Tumblr media
Obviously, the character design is rather different, but they still look like the right characters, even with the slight color changes...
Tumblr media
and with their items of human attire out. Ranger Smith, on the other hand...
Tumblr media
Ranger Smith is wildly off model, and probably on purpose, throughout the picture.
Tumblr media
Only in one scene appears he with a more familiar face.
Tumblr media
Now, I didn’t have to watch Wild Kratts (which, by the way, features 6 Spümcø Canada creatives) to learn that “there’s only one thing a bear likes more than raiding a pic-a-nic basket.”
Tumblr media
As the title suggests, Boo Boo loses his temper when Ranger Smith restricts him from tearing bark and decides to go primal in returning to his bear roots: “From this day forth, I’ll not dress in the man’s attire, and I’ll not speak in the man’s tongue. From now on, it’s going on all fours and grunting for me!”
Tumblr media
Boo Boo wreaks havoc for the trees with his natural bear roots.
Tumblr media
Unlike past episodes, however, the artists went far wilder than the usual Hanna-Barbera cartoon, making the trees alive and screaming in pain! OH, WHAT TOURTUE! Not to mention how I love Boo Boo’s goofy/manical laugh, a beautiful product of John Kricfalusi’s voice (Yes; I know that he was a formerly abusive megalomaniac who still has ADHD, but God knows what cartoons would be like today—at least those produced in Burbank and Canada—if it wasn’t for the many layout artists that he led).
Tumblr media
Also unnatural to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon is the extreme levels of slapstick, wackiness and graphic nature of cartoons since such shows as Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures, Beany and Cecil’s DiC reboot, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. Boo Boo and now Cindy Bear are licking away at all of the honey... and bees... with insanely long tongues (may be that they’re sloth bears?). This left Yogi Bear practically speechless.
Tumblr media
The mere sequence of dialogue between Yogi and Ranger Smith, discussing what to do about Boo Boo, involved HEAVY work in the storyboards by Vincent Waller. So many expressions that they couldn’t fit in each of Spümcø’s 3-panel storyboard pages!
Tumblr media
As you see, in addition to Vincent Waller’s storyboards, John K. added extra poses (storyboard revisions more or less, but definitely layout poses) under the respective scenes. That way, Vincent could focus on telling and writing the story in rough pictures. (source of storyboards)
Tumblr media
I also love the sound design. While it’s definitely true to a Hanna-Barbera cartoon, John K. and the late Henry Porch were very creative with some weird, dated and out-of-context sound effects, similar to what they and Horta Editorial did on The Ren & Stimpy Show in the first two seasons. The production music (probably APM and Capitol Records) also gave it a vintage, nostalgic feel.
Tumblr media
Ultimately, with the aforementioned abusive megalomaniac aside, Spümcø undoubtedly harbored some of the finest animators and artists ever. Such names as Bob Jaques (Spongebob Squarepants, Buy One, Get One Free*, The Baby Huey Show), Ben Jones (DC Super Hero Girls, Cats Don’t Dance, Teen Titans GO!), Vincent Waller (Spongebob Squarepants, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), Albert Lozano (Inside Out, A Kitty Bobo Show), Todd White (Spongebob Squarepants), Eric Koenig (Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Madagascar, Cats Don’t Dance, The Simpsons, and The Tigger Movie), and Erik Wiese (Samurai Jack, The Mighty B!) are among the hundreds of creatives who ended up almost everywhere working in Burbank and Canadian animation.
Tumblr media
Other names on the Spümcø team that one might recognize include Gabe Swarr (Dexter’s Laboratory, The Buzz on Maggie, Foe Paws, El Tigre), and even background artists such as Richard Daskas ( @rdaskas - Samurai Jack, Time Squad, Sym-Bionic Titan, Batman Beyond), Richard Ziehler-Martin (Tiny Toon Adventures, The Wacky World of Tex Avery), Hector Martinez (Tom and Jerry: Robin Hood and His Merry Mouse, Timone and Pumba, Captain N, Evil Con Carne, Dora the Explorer), and Tony Mora (MAD, Teen Titans GO! to the Movies, Pickle and Peanut). I mean: in short, these artists worked for Warner Bros. Animation, Disney Television Animation and Walt Disney Feature Animation, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network Studios!
Tumblr media
Spümcø’s production assistants on Boo Boo Runs Wild feature Matt Danner —a fantastic character designer, storyboard artists, director and producer, whose credits range from (Johnny Test and The Legend of the Three Caballeros to Team Hot Wheels and The Looney Tunes Show—and Cartoon Brew editor Amid Amidi. Brian A. Miller was an executive in charge of production, not for but probably in association with Cartoon Network.
Tumblr media
Spümcø’s creatives, as I said, are all over the place in Burbank animation. Other shows that still air on @adultswim have ex-Spümcø creatives. For example: today’s re-run of Samurai Jack EPISODE XVI features Chris Reccardi (The Powerpuff Girls, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy)...
Tumblr media
Scott Wills (Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal, The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat)...
Tumblr media
Lynne Naylor-Reccardi (The Shnookums and Meat Funny Cartoon Show, Wander Over Yonder) and Jim Smith (YooHoo and Friends, Tom and Jerry Tales, McGee and Me)...
Tumblr media
and Leticia Lacy (TRON: Uprising, Sym-Bionic Titan, Wander Over Yonder, Korgoth of Barbaria).
Tumblr media
Even outside of Cartoon Network Studios, where most ex-Spümcø artists end up, @cartoonnetwork’s The Amazing World of Gumball, from Cartoon Network Studios Europe (AKA Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe), features ex-Spümcø artist Charlie Bean (The Powerpuff Girls, Robotboy, Batman: The Animated Series, Timone and Pumba, Creature Crunch) on The Cartoon Network Europe Development Team.
Tumblr media
One of Cartoon Network’s biggest and craziest hits, Teen Titans GO!, also features such ex-Spümcø artists as storyboard artist, director and producer Luke Cormican (The Buzz on Maggie, Brandy and Mr. Whiskers, Brickleberry, The Replacements, El Tigre)...
Tumblr media
Gerald de Jesus (The Book of Life, The Ricky Gervais Show, TMNT)...
Tumblr media
and Eric J. Pringle (Fosters’ Home for Imaginary Friends, The Problem Solverz). What wacky cartoon filled with live-action images, unpredictable visual gags and extreme slapstick humor wouldn’t?
Tumblr media
Relatively, you could even tune in to Nickelodeon, the original home of Spümcø’s ground-breaking hit, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and see names of creatives associated with Spümcø and Ren & Stimpy, such as Zeus Cervas (Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Spongebob Squarepants, Clarence) on today’s episode of The Patrick Star Show...
Tumblr media
or even Gabe Del Valle (Mighty Magiswords, Spongebob Squarepants) on today’s episode of Middlemost Post!
Overall, Boo Boo Runs Wild introduced me to the cartoon studio whose works I took for granted and on which I was missing out all of my life, and I strongly encourage this generation to support this Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode, which you can watch RIGHT NOW on [adult swim]’s site. It was officially on their YouTube channel, but it was removed for unknown reasons. This short never even got a DVD or VHS release!
The last televised airing of Boo Boo Runs Wild on [adult swim] so far was January 6th, 2019 A.D., but Spümcø also produced “A Day in the Life of Ranger Smith” and “Boo Boo and the Man” (based on true events in the life of John Kricfalsui) for Cartoon Network.
Tumblr media
As I come to a close, it’s worth noting that layout Ed Benedict, an animator and artist whose credits go all of the way back to the 1930s with Disney and continued with MGM and Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network Studios, originally worked on Yogi Bear episode “Yogi’s Birthday Party” as a layout artist, and reprised that very role for “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. What a legacy the animators and artists of this episode leave!
Tumblr media
Always will I remember how Spümcø, whose legacy connects to my Cartoon Network-infused childhood, blessed me and graced me that fateful day, August 13th, 2016 A.D., with the ultimate example of the fine art of cartooning that is the Yogi Bear / Ranger Smith episode “Boo Boo Runs Wild”. I was living in the moment, and I thank God for it.
“For years they have [been] asking me to make new Yogi cartoons, but I can’t even get a half a million [dollars] to make one, probably because I actually like the characters, but 60-70 million $ to make walking corpses is economical.” - John Kricfalsui on Yogi Bear (2010)
Another Ranger Smith, Boo Boo or Yogi Bear cartoon from the people behind The Ren & Stimpy Show is highly unlikely today, due to the abuse and harassment of John K. angering the world to the point of hating and condemning the man who helped to shape not only Cartoon Network but also television animation—and animation as a whole—with an undeniable legacy of artists and animators who deserve way more credit and respect than we perhaps thought of giving as kids.
So this edit will heavily talk about Encanto and all the spoilers that it entails. If you haven't seen the movie yet then I would implore you to do so because it has changed my life in the possible ways including giving me a husbando that I never in a million years I planned on getting.
Tumblr media
"My first Disney husbando for film in the last ten years and the last thing that I expected for it to be a dorky, heartbreakingly sweet, rat man who just loves his family so much and would give anything to just keep them happy." (Me.)
OKAY now that I've warned all the spoiler conscious people I can officially talk about the new love of my life in every sense of the word, Bruno Madrigal. Oh boy, where do I even begin talking about this dorky man? He is absolutely the cutest thing that I have ever seen Disney create and watching his story absolutely warmed my heart. Encanto as a whole has become one of my favorite Disney movies of all time within the quick span of just a couple of days. And to me that is saying a hell of a lot because creative Disney as a whole has been there for me since I was extremely young. But during this last decade of watching Disney fumble about with trashy live action remake, after trashy live action remake and movies that while "good" were just never relatable to me. Then in comes Encanto with one of the most relatable stories that I have ever seen Disney tackle in my entire life. It was one of the few Disney movies that I could relate to the main character through every step of the way. I firmly believe that this movie was made for the outcasts of the world.
Enough of the background, I really desperately want to talk about my experience with this character. When I first heard that there was a member of the family that was outcasted and that "we don't talk about" I was praying to the Disney animation gods that they didn't do what I was thinking that I was going to do. It was going to be another twist villain and they were going to ruin what looked like what could be an absolutely fascinating movie. Imagine to my surprise scrolling through spoiler tumblr that it wasn't the case that they went with at all and I had a victory screech. The amount of happiness that Disney didn't take the obvious bait and make Bruno the "villain" of the story could fulfill my serotonin levels for the rest of my life. The minute I saw an actual image I was like "Okay I'm not into facial hair but he is attractive". For me I need a personality to make a fictional character a husbando. Without a personality you're just a character that I could probably feel an emotional attachment to.
Come Christmas Eve, watching Encanto was one of the first things that I did and while I instantly fell in love with the main character, her journey and her relationships amongst her family, it wasn't until Mirabel went through the walls of the house and ran into tío Bruno that this movie became one of ultimate top four Disney movies of all time (right up there with Beauty And The Beast, Atlantis Lost Empire, Princess And The Frog, and Hunchback Of Notre Dame). The minute that Bruno opened his mouth I instantly fell in love with his character. He was just such an adorable lovable dork, and I just automatically fell in love with him no matter what. If I had to label a moment it was when he introduced "Jorge" and "Hernando" so yeah it was pretty much instantly and I just knew that he was going to be everything to me (yeah it was pretty much automatic WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME??)
The more that I got to see of Bruno honestly, the worse my feels got because I fell in love with the way that him and Mirabel acted as a duo, there was just so many little things that I loved about this movie. It was I feel like a movie for us weirdos that get really into and lean on for emotional support. I absolutely fell in love with the way that Bruno's interactions were with everything. Hearing him talk about how much he loved his family when Mirabel chased after him I absolutely fell in love with the heart that he has. He's just such a wonderful tío more than anything. He loves his family more than anything in the whole world. He would do anything for his family, even moving into the walls of the casita to stop his family from blaming Mirabel.
Getting to see Bruno get easily accepted by his family is one of the most heartwarming things that I have ever seen in my entire life. When Pepa instantly hugged him to her when he tries to awkwardly wave before she picks him up in a massive hug. It's just such a beautiful moment and one of my favorite Disney moments up there with Belle's library. It's just a moment that feels so earned for his character after hearing all that he's had to go through. Even though he's the comedy relief there is this undercurrent of tragedy and that's what made me fall in love with his character.
For the first time in over a decade I have a Disney husbando. I never thought that it would happen again since the last one that came from Disney animation studios in an animated feature film was Naveen. But then in came Bruno Madrigal and my love for him hit me upside the head. He came at me when I was least expecting it and now he's one of my favorite husbandos that I have in my arsenal.
Screenwriter Tab Murphy Talks “Hunchback,” “Atlantis” and “Brother Bear” During Walt Disney Family Museum Happily Ever After Hours
by Tony Betti | Source (x)
Over the weekend I had the fortunate opportunity to attend the Walt Disney Family Museum’s Happily Ever After Hours Virtual Program featuring screenwriter Tab Murphy.
Tab Murphy has a wide embodiment of work for the screen, but this program primarily focused on his work for what is now known as Walt Disney Animation Studios. He contributed to The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Brother Bear.
Right off the bat, Tab said that his first foray into animation was a bit jarring. He wrote the script, and then partnered with Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz who, as he put it, had the script posted on walls all around a room and would then go up to certain sections and draw big Xs through the words and say “this is where we think a song should be.” As they worked together though, Tab said he realized how right they were to do that, and the end result is simply amazing.
Anybody familiar with the original story of The Hunchback of Notre Dame may recall that there are a ton of characters present in the original novel aside from the namesake Hunchback, Quasimodo. He said that was where one of the hardest parts of writing the movie adaptation lied, especially for a Disney animated film, noting that there was a certain “checklist” of sorts for a Disney film that the characters had to hit. So they developed the film around the characters that would best fill the roles of the principal lead (Quasimodo), the Hero (Phoebus), and the Princess (Esmeralda), along with the obvious villain, Claude Frollo. He said that the story was exceptionally dark for a Disney film, but he found the heart in it when you would take away everyone else leaving Quasimodo to do his own thing with the birds or the gargoyles, and the world got bright and colorful. This sentiment is actually echoed in the production design of the film, whenever Frollo is present, the colors are grays and dark shadows, and muted and boring hues, but whenever Quasi is involved in his own thing there are far more colors and brightness.
He also elaborated on his love for writing the character of Esmeralda, saying he felt that she was Disney’s original activist, and she was most definitely not a damsel in distress, standing up for the issues, with Tab citing the line (though he flubbed it a little) “You mistreat this poor boy the same way you mistreat my people. You speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those most in need of your help!”
When asked about the development of Quasimodo, Tab pointed out that more classic adaptations of the story, such as an earlier incarnation from Universal in their horror movie craze, took the character and turned him into a literal monster, some sort of terrifying creature. “This is a human being,” Tab said, adding that his version would not scare you but draw out empathy. But he still had to be realistic. He couldn’t be the hero either, that wouldn’t be true to the source material, but he echoed thoughts and ideas shared by animator James Baxter in a recent program from the museum, that he needed to be gentle and warm to reinforce that this was a human and not a monster.
Interestingly, Tab said that he had not watched the film in its entirety since the world premiere back in 1996 up until about two weeks before the program, forgetting how beautiful the final product turned out. He said he cried his eyes out and believes that story holds up because of that emotion, something that everyone can relate to at some point in their lives, that they’re different and feeling alienated and an outsider who overcomes that. “Everyone who worked on that movie, everyone was on their A-game.”
After Hunchback, Tab was assigned to tackle Tarzan, though he openly admitted he wasn’t as involved in that one as much as people think he was. Shortly after he began, Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise (directors of Hunchback) asked him to join their team for a radical new movie that would buck the trends of Disney Animation, Atlantis: The Lost Empire. According to Tab, the pair pitched him the idea while comparing it to Disneyland, saying “You know how you go in to [the park] and go right into Fantasyland, through the castle, see the princesses and fairy tales. Well, we’re going to take a hard left straight to Adventureland.”
Tab was excited, this was going to be something so out of the ordinary and he would be a part of it. He noted that he was especially excited because of the subpods that would shoot out of the Ulysses. At another point in the session, Tab mentioned that he was never worried about budget when writing for Disney animation, noting that the animators were so good they would figure out how to get what he wrote onto the screen successfully, with the Subpods off the main submarine as they battled the Leviathan an excellent example of that. He also elaborated on what he referred to as “movie moments,” those special quotes that you know, when writing them, people will always remember and associate with the movie, with Atlantis having one of his favorites, when Helga is firing the flare gun at Roarke’s balloon and uses his own words, “Nothing personal.”
As many know, the film was not an immediate box office success. It didn’t do poorly, it just didn’t reach the numbers that Disney likes to see. Because of that, Tab thought he had written Disney’s first flop. The film came out in 2001, and he said it wasn’t until last year when he was stuck at home that someone had exposed him to the following that Atlantis: The Lost Empire has acquired over the years. He even started getting letters and messages from fans, some saying that the film had inspired them to be linguists or archeologists as those who were younger when they saw it are now adults exploring their career path.
Tab has an almost Jeff Bridges-like quality to him, almost channeling the Dude from The Big Lebowski, and elaborated on the sentiment of career paths, commenting that when he was in school, he was studying forestry and biology. In one of his best pieces of wisdom from the session, he said that “Part of knowing what you want is knowing what’s not meant for you.” It was his love of movies that continued to grow prompting him to get into the industry as a screenwriter. However, that background in forestry and wildlife would come in handy on his next assignment, Brother Bear.
Tab said goodbye to the kids, and jetted off to Florida for a short-term residence at the Yacht Club resort where he would go to the Animation studio that was part of the Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) where Brother Bear was in production. Most of the original story, he said, was created from campfire stories that he and director Aaron Blaise would share. Together they wrote the original story which was mostly similar and had Kenai being transformed and subsequently mentored by an older bear named Grizz, voiced by Michael Clarke Duncan. He packed up and left and only after that did they change one prominent piece of the writing. Grizz would now be dropped for a younger bear, Koda, and that one “movie moment” as Tab says, where Kenai has to say the “he did something bad.”
Tab said the story of what happened on Brother Bear is truly the story of animation. It’s living and breathing. Things get dropped, added, changed, tweaked. He felt like a starting pitcher in a baseball game, there to set you up for success and then be moved or changed out to make sure the game is won, but also only one part of the greater team as a whole. When asked about how he would draw out emotion in his writing he said he would only put the words down, and it was the rest of that same team that would succeed in making you feel something, adding that he might have words that touch you emotionally in scene, but the rest of the team knew how to enhance those words and make it something truly special.
Andy on Asian Animation or SYAC: The Master Review 2
Let’s talk a bit about anime and Dobson’s work relation with it.
I think we can all agree, that starting from the late 90s and early 2000s on, anime and manga became extremely popular in the western world. Sure, Japanese animation was nothing completely new to us (Speed Racer, Nadia-Secret of Blue Water, Samurai Pizza Cats, Sailor Moon, Kimba and Akira e.g. come to my mind as properties already known in the west before 1995) but it really was around this time that thanks to “mainstream” stuff like Dragon Ball and Pokemon people became aware of how different Japanese animation was from western. Eventually resulting in the really good shit (like Cowboy Bebop, Black Lagoon, Kenshin and Heat Guy J) coming over and enriching nerd culture for more than just a few people who knew of it as an obscurity at that point. Now, if you know anything about Dobson, you likely know that his relationship with anime is rather… complicated to say the least. Or, to let him explain it with his own words…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dobson essentially likes silly and wacky 90s anime. But later on he hated anime in general, because it got too popular and a bad experience with an anime club in college soured his enjoyment of it. Furthermore, he put the blame on his lackluster art style and storytelling capabilities as seen in the likes of Formera, Patty and Alex ze Pirate, on anime in general, while also claiming that Disney pulling the plug on 2D animation is the result of the “anime inspired” Treasure Planet, meaning anime in a sense deprived him of his chance at working at his dream job and “ruining” western animation.
Tumblr media
Which to me has always been ignorant as fuck. For starters, I can understand not liking certain stories or genres, either for objective or subjective reasons. But to hate on an entire nation’s form of entertainment (not just individual shows or genres), depriving yourself of the chance of potentially watching a lot of good stuff while also being rather insulting to these other works and people enjoying them? Especially when the stuff you can supposedly “stomach” has been rather simplistic compared to other things?
Tumblr media
 Second, blaming Japan for “poisoning” your art style? What, did the ghost of Osamu Tezuka possess you and FORCE you to put sweatdrops on your characters forehead while also going for the rather simplistic character style of Rumiko Takahashi, as well as emulating the slapstick of the likes as Slayers and Ranma ½?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Next, if he had emulated them successfully, I say he would have actually managed to tell decent enough stories worth to read online. Not create Uncle Peggy aka “Discount Happosai” or the bland proto-Isekai known as Formera.
Tumblr media
I mean, let’s give some context here: There have been people who successfully managed to emulate certain anime and manga aesthetics into western animation and make it work. Otherwise we wouldn’t have gotten the likes of Avatar-The last Airbender, Samurai Jack, the Animatrix, Thundercats 2011, Super Robot Monkey Hyperforce Go, Kim Possible, W.I.T.C.H, Megas XLR and Wakfu. You know, shows that are actually awesome as hell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heck, Dobson’s favorite animated show of the last decade, Steven Universe, is heavily inspired by anime aesthetics to the point of being embarrassing.
 But Dobson… well, he emulated anime aesthetics in his work the same way as these crimes against animation did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Combined with his general shortcomings as a storyteller it is no wonder his initial comics did not do well.
 Lastly, and sorry for digressing here a bit, but if the Wikipedia entry on Treasure Planet is something to go by, there was no real inspiration by anime involved in making this movie.
Supposedly the idea of making an animated Treasure Planet in outer space movie was already pitched by Ron Clements WAY BACK in 1985 but only came to be after Michael Eisner greenlighted stuff in the late 90s. Design wise the movie was supposed to look 70% traditional and 30% sci-fi inspired and people took inspiration for the art style by illustrators associated with the Brandywine School of Illustration. A western style of illustration established in the 19th century, that had a big impact on the illustration styles for many 19th and early 20th century adventure novels and short stories.
What, is anime supposed to be the only form of animation allowed to have sci fi elements or steampunk in it? Fucks sake, The Lion King and Atlantis, which came out one year earlier to Treasure Planet, were likely more inspired by anime. Don’t believe me? Watch Atlantis and then a certain anime by Studio Gainax called “Nadia-Secret of Blue Water”. Or read up on the controversy surrounding the two.
The truth is, it is not entirely clear what caused Disney to shut down 2D feature film animation in the early 2000s. In fact, if anything, most people put the blame on Michael Eisner and a certain change in the publics taste in movies in general, combined with Disney trying to turn almost every movie they had into a franchise via cheap follow up movies on video and DVD.
And even if Disney did not shut down, are we really supposed to believe that a certain guy with fedora would have made it big at Disney to the point Alex ze Pirate would have been made into a feature film?
Tumblr media
But Dobson could never quite understand this and instead of “reinventing” himself properly, he would rant about anime and its fans in one form or another…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
 And on the peak of his hissy fit create this little art piece he baptized Anime Sux. Alternatively “West vs East”. Or as I like to call it, slap a jap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, the pic was done in 2008 and Dobson claimed sometimes in the last decade, that he no longer holds his old opinions. Unfortunately, by that point he would also more or less use the chance to vent in his webcomic about anime (or rather its fans), which brings us finally back to SYAC.
 While Dobson never outright thematized in more detail WHY he hates anime and manga in SYAC (likely cause if his comic reasoning was even slightly like his reasoning in his blogs, people would have torn him apart like a bag of paper) he did use the format to punch down on anime fans and their preferences.
 For example, for someone who has a 4chan story going around of having been rather arrogant towards others in college for not liking Ranma ½, Dobson has THIS little college related comic to show off, where he portrays an aspiring manga artist as a delusional jackass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then in this strip titled manga, his manga fan is essentially portrayed as a young woman dressing up like a very stereotypical high school anime girl, who is in the wrong for even just DARING to draw her comics in the direction manga are read.
Tumblr media
On one hand, I get Dobson’s point. She could be at risk of alienating a market of readers as she is obviously drawing for a western audience. Then again, if she doesn’t draw a traditional western comic but a manga, why shouldn’t she? I mean, as long as she enjoys it, which I assume she does as she seems genuinely just happy when stating that she likes manga, why not let her? Plus, this comic was drawn in the late 2000s. I think by then most people kinda knew how to read from right to left, so Dobson’s claim she would alienate or confuse people is kinda redundant. If anything I find a) Dobson getting angry at her just very petty (just let her have fun) and b) portraying a western manga fan as someone who would be confused by the sheer idea of reading stuff from right to left is also in itself just really dumb and insulting. What is Dobson trying to imply? That anime fans are so stuck in the way they consume certain media, they can’t act according to “western standards” again?
Then there is this strip where yet another female anime fan is essentially portrayed as the embodiment of how “ignorant” manga fans are of the idea of different art styles...
Tumblr media
Which becomes rather laughable once Dobson describes his style as a mixture of European, American and  Japanese. Why? Because he is the one oversimplifying things, rather than the anime fan.
You see while anime and manga of all sorts do share certain aesthetics (like the black and white art style, emphasize on the eyes of characters, the way hair is drawn, recurring tropes within certain genres and so on) style wise (both in art and storytelling) there can be severe differences, depending on the artist alone. Akira Toriyama’s style differentiates significantly from the likes of Eichiro Oda, Rumiko Takahashi, Kentaro Miura, Tezuka, Kaori Yuki and so forth.
The same also goes for many western artists. Herge had a significantly different style from Uderzo and Goscinny. Don Rosa has a different style in which he drew Scrooge McDuck than Carl Barks did. Rob Liefeld and Jim Lee draw mainstream superheroes differently compared to how Jack Kirby, George Perez and others did. Heck, Ethan Van Sciver and Jim Lee were closely associated with Green Lantern in the 2000s and look how they differentiate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Which btw is the kind of skill level Dobson would have needed to have, to make it in the mainstream industry
So when Dobson says “I draw in a combination of American, Western and Japanese” all I can think is the following: THAT DOESN’T NARROW IT DOWN! WHAT THE HECK HAVE YOU LEARNT IN COLLEGE ABOUT COMICS? WHICH ARTISTS, WORKS AND STORYTELLERS DO YOU TRY TO EITHER EMULATE OR HAVE BEEN INSPIRED BY?
Then there is this little thing…
Tumblr media
Where do I even begin? How about the fact that Dobson’s hand in the last panel looks like he has lost a thumb? The fact that the little boy, anime fan or not, is aware of Sae Sawanoguchi, a character from a short lived OVA and anime series from the 90s, which considering his age, I kinda doubt he would be aware off. Unlike Dobson, who got into anime in the 90s and admits in fact within the posts I loaded up earlier, that he had watched the anime in particular, known in the west as Magic User Club.
Then there is the implication by Dobson, that anime is so “corruptive” as a medium, little kids don’t even know the most basic characters in western animation because of it. I expect in a next panel, that all of sudden some 50s PSA guy comes along and lectures me that if I want this kind of thing not to happen at MY convention, I need to teach little kids more about the GOOD western animation, instead of the BAD eastern one. Then there is this rather unflattering portrayal of a shonen ai/shojou ai fangirl…
Tumblr media
 Which makes me laugh cause honestly, even some of the worst shonen ai and shojou ai can do better in portraying a “realistic” gay relationship than Patty if you ask me.
Also, as much as I think fangirls can be extremely thirsty (I have read my fair share of extremely stupid yaoi and yuri fanfics) I think that in hindsight Dobson is really not anyone to complain about shipping obsession and sex when he himself has KorraSami, the Ladybug fandom and a certain rat pirate under his floppy belt.
As you can imagine, Dobson would get heat for those comics, considering how he himself has been greatly inspired by anime and manga for his major comics. And while I don’t have any explicit deviantart posts of him reacting to criticism in that regard, I do have this comic which addresses it directly.
Tumblr media
 And yeah, if I were schoolgirl number 4, I would just sigh and walk away after telling Dobson that his mistakes and shortcomings are not related to having consumed anime, but rather by what sort of anime (and other stories) he had consumed and the amount of effort he had put in creating his stories instead of emulating just something more popular. Plus, if you really want people to draw more from life, how about drawing more from life yourself down the line? And no, tracing Star Wars movie frames does not count.
Finally, Dobson, considering how very little most people think of your work, I say mission accomplished: People have learnt from your mistakes and know not to be a Dobson.
And at last, there is this comic, which kinda wraps up Dobson’s “vendetta” with anime and manga fans within the pages of SYAC.
Tumblr media
By trying to mock anime fans and make them look just as shallow as he is. I at least suppose. Honestly, the message of this comic is rather muddled. On one hand, I would say the strawman accusing Dobson hates anime just because it is popular is very simplified. After all, Dobson has made his reasons for not liking anime clear in a few more details. It’s just that the details in and on themselves in real life are still rather shallow and boil down to a lot of personal bias rather than an objective criticism of actual flaws. Which I think is worth pointing out.
But frankly, what is Dobson trying to say or point out here? That the strawman is not so different or even dumber than him, because he hates Justin Bieber for “shallow” and superficial reasons too?
Okay, this doesn’t quite work as well as Dobson wants. First, the argument Dobson’s strawman makes is in huge parts based on some verified statements Dobson made for not liking anime. Second, he just says a name and that triggers the guy to express his hatred for Bieber. We don’t know why the guy hates Bieber and you could make in fact the case, that he hates him not because he is popular, but because he has a genuine issue with the artist, his work or his behavior as a human being. Third, if you want to make yourself look like the better person Dobson, try to argue with the guy and make solid arguments why you don’t like anime. Instead you just deflect the criticism by changing the subject and then try to make yourself look like the “smarter” person in the room by mocking your critic in the most condescending manner.
Which as I think about it, sounds like your modus operandi on twitter and tumblr.
Weirdly enough, that more or less marks the “end” of Dobson tackling anime fans and the beef he has with them within the pages of SYAC. Despite how much Dobson’s negative reputation especially in early years was build around him hating on anime and belittling its fans, he didn’t really do more afterwards in the Dobson focused pages of SYAC. And mind you, those strips were also separated by other strips in-between, focused on Dobson just being at conventions.
Unfortunately for him, the strips didn’t really help in any way to diminish that negative reputation and instead just confirmed for many, that Dobson can’t handle criticism about his flawed opinion on anime. If anything, it just made people think even less of Dobson, as the strips just painted him as someone who would rather portray his critics as strawman he can be “rightfully” annoyed at, instead of fellow humans with slightly different tastes in entertainment, who are still worth listening to.
So, now that we have the anime fan related “annoyances” out of the way, what other sort of silly problems in making webcomics would Dobson cover in his strips and are “relatable” to everyone?
Lets see some of these examples in the next part.
HOW FAR I’LL LET GO FOR YOUR WORLD
Tumblr media
theme/s: moana, frozen, and little mermaid inspired. the story of a queen and a prince who lived in two different worlds. which one would let go of their throne, title, and family for the other?
Tumblr media
word count: 1,937 words
Tumblr media
roze’s note: i know those are three disney inspirations and that it’s not really explicitly shown in this oneshot but i hope you all will like this! for me, i think this is one of my best works so far. i enjoyed writing it~ anyway, enjoy reading!
Tumblr media
once upon a time, there was a queen.
“all hail (y/n), queen of atlantis! long live the queen!”
the roar of the chant continued on, their voices muffling inside your head as you refused to look at all of them in the eyes. instead, you glanced at your father, his gaze already on yours with a troubled look on his face, one that you could say that could mirror yours.
your breathing was normal but deep inside, your heart was pounding by your chest that if someone were to come close to you, they would have been capable of knowing your fears and anxiety. but even if they looked closer, your tear-stained cheek will not be in view for it was already washed away by the water—or rather, your water. it’s yours now, you own the sea.
“what seems to be bothering you, our queen?" glancing over at one of your most loyal bodyguards, neito, you found his eyes gleaming with concern over your state. you could clearly read them well—the eyes. it's one of the perks of being a mermaid. without using your mouth, any mermaid or merman can have a conversation with either just by looking into the eyes. it's one of the advantages they have against the humans.
yet still, there are casualties in the population.
"don't mind me, monoma." you say, glancing away in hopes your emotions were kept in check, most especially now—where everyone is relying and looking up on you, with their stares and wary gazes focused on your figure, observing each and every move or expression that comes across your face.
he looks like he wanted to talk some more into you but another guard stops him, one that you could say you trust the most.
“apologies, my queen. is neito bothering you again?” kendo, your personal bodyguard. she was a commoner thus the officials did not really want her in such a high position but since your parents trusts her too, she was entitled as the “royal commander”, the guardian of the younger princess of atlantis just because everyone thought that there would be an army for the future queen and it should only be fair to have someone by the princess’ side.
how they thought so wrong.
“no worries, itsuka-chan. monoma was only asking how i was.” you answer as you look around the hall, still finding it a bit dull despite the celebratory theme of the party.
after all, what’s there to celebrate about when yo were just a replacement of a throne that was not really yours since the beginning?
“congratulations for getting the throne, princess (y/n)!”
your eyes landed upon an unpleasant sight of the siren that had been lurking around the kingdom for years.
"she is no longer a princess, dabi. please address the queen correctly." kendo scolds the man and he instantly apoogizes.
"my bad, my bad." he doesn't sound regretful at all. "it appears that your highness is still grieving for her sister and i only wanted to place a smile on her beautiful face once again."
you were trying hard not to show any kind of expression in front of everyone at his words. it was a good thing kendo stayed by your side or else you would have banished your sister's fiance instantly—rather, ex-fiance. sirens were not originally allowed to lurk with the mermen but your family allowed it because your sister claims that she loves the man.
and to think he would have became king if she indeed wed him. you were actually close to coming into conclusion that he wanted to be one, that's why he was with your sister. it could be possible but you couldn't linger in that thought for long or else you'll burst out from the thoughts that clouded your mind.
"excuse me, i need to take a breather."
"wait-your highness!"
you were already swimming away from them—from everyone. you couldn't handle it. to be crowned as queen the day after your sister was declared as dead.
it was all suffocating.
your hand reaches out into the light outside, your lips parting with a silent call—for help? redemption?
whatever it is—you just want to—
you saw how fast darkness envelops the sky from above the water, pulling you away from your train of thoughts. pursing your lips, you suspected a storm would sooner than later.
you were about to head down back to the castle when your attention was called out by a shadow that looms over your figure—something that you certainly could identify.
a ship.
memories of your sister's smile the last time you had seen her pass your mind and you were close to the temptation of that feeling that you never thought you'd ever come by—revenge by pure hatred. yes, that's it. who would have thought that you would ever hate humans?
before you could ascend further, something gets thrown into the water and you were no stupid to not think it was a human. a specie that has legs—of course.
you found yourself colliding with the figure—not too hard though. you were able to prevent it from hitting you hard, but the impact was still there at least.
it was because of his face—that face. you stared at it too long.
you had never seen a human before so you certainly had never seen anyone that could compare this one to. but he looked much like any merman would, minus the gills and the tail. were you enamored because you had never seen anyone with this kind of face? this kind of beauty?
it sooner came to you that he wouldn't be able to breathe without gills.
you have a chance of killing this human.
yet...
pulling him with you, you swam as fast as you could towards the surface, farther from the ship that he fell into. once you had gotten him out, you were able to breathe the fresh air of the outside world, giving you a sense of freedom you always feel when you go out of the water.
you didn't know what you were thinking as you placed the boy down the shore, a hand on his chest. light emitted from where your hand was and as you hovered them further up into his face, the light followed.
water came out of his mouth, just as you had intended. a sigh came out of your lips when the boy coughs and was able to breathe once again. you might have not seen a human before but you have studied them through books and asking from those who have interacted with them.
that’s why it was so hard to resent them. when you learned that your sister was killed by pirates, you couldn’t believe it. yet for some reason, you still did.
you wanted to blame someone—anyone. and that thought of killing this man earlier dawned to you that you were willing to do murder just for revenge.
your sister wouldn’t have liked that.
“who... who are you?”
when you look up to his eyes, every little thought in your mind vanishes away like fire when poured by water. you never knew anyone could have two eye colors and now that you have seen this man, you became much more fascinated.
he doesn’t move away as you lean forward and stare at the turquoise and grey of his orbs, but you could see him glance down and feel his gaze by your tail, an indication that you were not of his kind.
but he remained still.
“you’re...” he looks up again. “you’re a mermaid.”
there were no ill-tone in his voice and you begun to wonder what was on his mind as you continue to keep silent.
your skin crawled for the first time when you two gazed at each other as seconds pass by, too enamored to look away from each other.
was it the same for him? you thought. though as you were to open your mouth and speak, voices from the background catches both of your attention.
he had a troubled look on his face and you didn’t fail to notice it.
“find him! find the prince! make sure he’s dead!”
mermen had could understand human language. and you were no fool to not understand what the situation was.
your hand finds his and as he looks at you again, words slips out of your lips.
“come with me.”
questions towards yourself came as soon as you spoke. you refused to answer them and instead waited patiently for the boy.
you’d just have to make do for later.
what’s important is now. you can’t just let this boy die in front of your eyes. not when you had felt a connection with him.
he glances down at your hand that was on top of his and then made eye contact once again. he has this expression that you couldn’t read, but it only intensified the curiosity you felt towards him.
“how?” his voice was much clearer this time and you couldn’t help but notice how tingles came by your arm as you felt him interlace his fingers with yours, already deciding despite of his question.
you lean forward and he didn’t bulge. there was no fear in the hues of his eyes and all you could feel was the calmness of his soul and the fire that was on your stomach.
“you have to be a siren.” you answer, coming out as a whisper, as if it was a secret that shouldn’t be heard by anyone.
“a siren?”
you nodded, raising another hand to his chest, you felt the warmth emanating from it, much different from how a merman’s body would feel.
“what’s your name?”
“shoto. prince shoto todoroki.”
“prince.” you say, remembering back to the echoes of the voices from earlier.
nodding your head in acknowledgement, you introduced yourself curtly. “i’m (y/n).”
although after he had shook his head in response, you had pulled him backwards—towards the water, dragging him with all of your strength. he didn’t have time to struggle, and you preferred it that way.
because in order to be a siren—to let go of his humanity and become impure in front of the living, the prince has to die first.
you didn’t let go of his hands as he lost the oxygen of the above. and before he could breathe his last breath, you lean in and placed your lips on shoto. it was the very last step of living as an impure being living under the water; having the same breathe with someone who does the same—which meant you.
when you pulled away, you saw shoto’s eyes flutter open again; the once turquoise and grey were now dark, as well as the hair that were once crimson and white. he begun to mirror the features of a merman, yet with the same dullness that your sister’s fiancé has.
shoto reminded you of dabi, most probably because dabi was once a human too.
yet their features do look alike. are humans usually like this? you questioned in your mind.
a gentle squeeze on your hand alerts you of the completeness of the process, his senses coming back to life that was once dead—or much closer to death.
“i... what have you done to me?” he was breathless despite having gills and nose to breathe. though, the expression in his face told you a whole different story.
“i made you one of us now.” you say, holding tightly onto the same hand that you’d been interlaced with since earlier.
“i am the queen of atlantis. welcome to my world, prince shoto.”
What Character are you THG Disney Verson.
Please Note if you don’t wanna Read why I picked everyone To be the Characters Check out my other Post without explaining why...
Hello. So I decided to make Disney Collages of Characters who I think they match in The Hunger Games… I added their Name. What Character(s) and the Movie(s). So I was going off looks at the start. But as I gotten to some it’s more the personality. ( Some Do have that personality of the characters chosen others Are the farthest thing but Look like the Characters). So I will write under each Collage of why I picked the Disney Characters for The Hunger Games one. Because man some do need explaining.  Also some don’t match the Princess to Prince  But Look past that point for this, And Please note yes this is all my opinions On this. I wanna Thank @alliswell21 @mandelion82 @b-boop5  @winegirl65  For all your  help giving me ideas of who to use when I was stuck and Yes Some where chosen.   I will for sure make more Disney realted ones now that I Got the pictures so don’t you worry.  ( I want to note there may be a few spoilers if you haven’t seen these movies)
( Please note I may do them in a few Different parts or all Because there is 29 of them)
So here they are and Enjoy.
Tumblr media
Delly Alice In Wonderland. I chose her because Even tho I’ve never seen Alice in Wonderland I felt like this suited Delly. And Also this is how I kinda picture Delly to Look like
Tumblr media
Madge Cinderella. Okay she was gonna be another Princess but I decided on Cinderella for a few reasons. Besides the whole Mistreated at home Madge does have experance of a mother who is Ill  also this is how I kinda Pictured Madge.
Tumblr media
Marvel Prince Philip. Okay I am gonna be real Honest I’ve watched Sleeping beauty but it’s not one I seen A lot And I just felt like Marvel Looked like this Prince.
Tumblr media
Glimmer Aurora Sleeping Beauty. Well she slept on the job in The Hunger Games and we know where that got her... Aurora kinda looks like Glimmer.
Tumblr media
Cato Hercules. Okay he  has that Hercules look to him. He wants to be on top.  ( I have only seen this movie a handful of times so I am blanking on Hercules that movie that Character but I feel like Cato is very much him.
Tumblr media
Clove Megara... Now I’ve sworn on it that Meg is Katniss ( who won’t admit to being in love) then I made Catos and was like Okay lets match them and Clove for Meg kinda works.  Kinda looks like her somewhat ( Plus I am not sure if any women is this knife throwing type in Disney.)  Anyways Hercules and Meg go together so i had to do it for Clove. Plus She’s kinda got that Meg in her
Tumblr media
Cashmere Elsa.... Now I honestly did this on looks ( Elsa was one of my only Princesses Left and I had to use her in this). So Cashmere. was my choice
Tumblr media
Enobaria I decided on maleficent . She’s kinda got that Maleficent in her..  ( Also with her No one I could think of Else). So yeah she’s a villian in this but they are bad ass arnt they.
Tumblr media
Wiress and Beetee. I went with more of a theme Big Hero 6 . Becuase they are all techy and stuff.  and Inventive to.
Tumblr media
Foxface Merida.. I went with Merida because mostly the hair Color and we don’t hear foxface talk but I can sorta picture her have the strong Scottish Accent. I Don’t know why.  But mostly for looks for this one
Tumblr media
Thresh I went with Maui from Moana for him Because Thresh is strong. Indepedent I can actually see someone like him being scared of the heart of tifti and Rue kinda bugging him a bit. ( We didn’t see it but Districts partners they share a bit of a bond)
Tumblr media
Cressida Thanks @alliswell21 for This Cressida idea. Now I am gonna be honest. I haven’t ever seen Atlantis the lost empire or any of the Movies. ( If there are more) But when I looked at Kida and Helga I was like yes Fitting for Cressida here.  * I recall a commerical before the movies on one of my many disney flims and it was Atlantis on it so I kinda knew the Kita character a tiny bit but not well*
Tumblr media
Mags Tala Moanas Grandmother. I think Mags fits the bill for her Quiet well because Mags is kinda the odd oneish  But doesn’t give a flying f what others say shes like b**** been though it.  Type of deal. My Favourite Tala line ever is Whatever just Happned here.. Blame it on the pig...  Also Tala ( If you never seen moana why and kinda spoilers) when she died she gave up the gift of the heart so Moana could go on sorta like how Mags did in the Hunger Games.
So this is Part 1 to my Disney Hunger Games Character Collages. ( PART 2 will be up soon and Remeber there is a big post of all 29 without me Going into This much detail.
