I'm starting to think people don't understand that adaptations have to be different. Did netflix have the same amount of time as Book 1 to work with? Technically yes, but 20 episodes is for sure more than 8 so they didn't.
If you are constantly comparing it to the original and upset about the changes. Then for sure the netflix adaptation is not for you.
I've seen some bad adaptations over the years, for example my favorite book is Inkheart. Even the 2010 Avatar movie is a better adaptation than Inkheart's.
Conclusion it's a pretty good series, if you like the original, if you can watch it without constantly comparing it to the original you will enjoy it more.
Editing to add to this since so many have said something.
Inkheart is not a horrible movie, but it is a bad adaptation. Fantastic cast, with no loyalty to the source material.
There is a difference between adapting a story, and remaking it. This is literally being referred to as the netflix adaptation, so clearly it's not a remake. Because it is an adaptation, changes are expected. It would be stupid to expect a copy and paste story.
The changes make sense, because if you want book 2, and only have 8 episodes to work, you have to make a lot happen. The original show has clear start and end points for the events that occur (aka you know that start of the episode and the end). That's fine, when you have 20 episodes to work with, each 20 minutes. That doesn't work with 8 episodes each 1 hour (or about an hour). It doesn't translate to smooth storytelling. A lot of important things occur in book 1, but let's not forget that book 1 is also more episodic vs the rest of the series. In fact don't we often say "it gets better," about the book 1? What I am saying, a lot has to happen in the first season to set up not just season 2, but season 3. They did really good making sure those events happened.
I don't mind the mixing of plot because they didn't have much of a choice if they wanted a cohesive plot. I would also like to add I'm so glad the removed the northern air temple episode's setting. Never felt right with me.
I'm not saying don't compare them because it's impossible not to. I'm saying that if you are constantly going to be thinking of everything they changed, if you think the original series is so perfect. So unflawed, that how dare they even try. If you are going to be watching it already offended that they decided to even touch it. This adaptation is not for you.
If you were like me and wished that fire did in fact burn everytime it touched someone. If you are like me and thought the original series was too light-hearted for its plot. Then you will enjoy it. It's a fun adaptation, that keeps as loyal to its source material as it can be.
Yes I have my issues with it, but that doesn't mean it wasn't a fun watch.

okay chat maybe him like getting jealous
Assuming you’re the anon who asked about Spooky
Tumblr media
Him this episode >>>>>>>>>>
I've seen posts before about Spooky and people say he'd pull out a gun and start swearing when he's jealous and really show his ass but honestly? I don't think that's accurate
I haven't watched OMB in a hot minute and Netflix is being some hoes rn so forgive me if I'm wrong but wasn't he incredibly patient?
He was patient with Cesar and with Cesar’s friends. I don't recall him ever losing his temper and going insane besides season 4 when he heard people fucking shit up outside
Spooky gives me the silent jealous type. Silent but also petty
Like if you came back to him after talking to a guy he'd say some petty shit like “thought you'd be around him all day”
“That's your man now, right?” “Stop being childish”
You could tell when he's jealous though cause you'd feel him staring at you the whole time
I could also see him clearing his throat loud as hell if you're nearby to both get your attention and introduce him to whoever it is you're talking to
It's gotta be a guy he doesn't know cause realistically what Santo is dumb enough to flirt with you?
I feel like I'm expected to say he'd have this huge outburst but Oscar doesn't give me that vibe. He's pretty patient and I think especially if y'all have been together for an extended amount of time, he'd feel secure enough to know you won't do some foul shit
I feel like someone touching you would cause him to immediately get involved. He'd walk over and physically take their hand off of you while pulling you closer to him or behind him
And let's be real, no one is dumb enough to try shit with him. He's 6’1 and known as the leader of the Santos
But if someone did try him because they're drunk or whatever, I feel that even though he's jealous he'd still put your safety first. His jealousy would go to the back of his mind and he'd try to get you out in case shit gets intense
Another situation he'd step in is if you're visibly uncomfortable. Typically if someone's flirting with you, he knows you can handle it but if you're so obviously uncomfortable then he'd step in and get you away
I feel like if you're dating Oscar your safety would go over everything so while he's still a man and wants to play all big and bad in whoever's face, getting you away is his biggest priority
“Are you jealous?” “Should I be?” “No” then he'd nod or smth
Now let's say you're hanging around a new guy a lot. Would he get jealous? Probably. He's a guy.
This is a different situation ‘cause he's not seeing anything. He can't pull you away. What does he do?
Short answer; nothing. Long answer; he doesn't seem like the type to be so jealous he'd snoop on your phone or follow you because relationships require trust and if you caught him, you'd be upset. I could see him asking questions about the guy and then denying he's jealous ‘cause “I have nothing to be jealous about”
And it's like??? Are you telling me  that or telling yourself that?
Over time it'd become obvious he's feeling a certain way. You'd say you're gonna hang out with whoever the guy is and he'd just make a “mmm” sound instead of actually responding
“Something wrong?” “I didn't say anything” “Exactly”. Eventually it'd come out though
And the idea of him flirting with someone else to make you jealous comes up but I don't think that'd happen. He hardly has any relationships besides his gang which means he hardly has any close relationships. He has the kids, who he's like an older brother too (or literally an older brother to) and Mario (and we don't know how much they interact) so I don't see him risking a relationship just to be on petty shit
He'd say smth petty but flirting with someone else just as payback for some shit you can't control? Nah
You could probably calm him down easily just by being near him. Making jokes about him being jealous would help also because it's you acknowledging that you see how he feels without having a sappy ass conversation
I feel like this is so anticlimactic and disappointing but realistically I don't see him flipping his shit. He's 19-25, which could make him a bit immature but 1) he's grown up quickly so I think he can handle his emotions. 2) He has two strikes already. He's not popping his shit and risking life in prison because he was jealous. And 3) he knows you know where home is.
He gets jealous, sure, but all those reasons stacked together makes him act calm, only getting somewhat aggressive if someone is touching you or making you uncomfortable. He’s more petty than anything
Quick story time. So I got away from my abusive dad when I was 13-14, right. I was also obsessed with Spooky. Tell me why my therapist said “I think you love him so much because he’s a strong and scary guy and in your head he’d protect you if your dad came back for you”. The way I almost blocked her-
I’m still seeing her years later😃

Netflix atla live action review ep 1-3
So i was able to watch the first three episodes and i wrote down some thoughts. Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a big post. There's a lot i don't like, but it's not all negative. So let's get the negative out of the way first, then we'll get to the positive.
The cgi is abhorrent. Especially the green screen stuff where a lot of movement is happening. I'm specifically referring to the scenes of Katara and Sokka in the canoe as well as the Omashu railing system, and anytime Aang is flying on his glider. The bending may be better than the original live action, but it's not good either. Bending for me was always gonna be impossible in live action. I never feel like there's any connection between the moves the actor is making and the cgi element. In animation it's much easier to make the two connect, but an actor is basically staring at nothing and moving their hands around a bunch, hoping post will make it look good. This show also fell prey to the "ball of water is consistently losing water and yet remains the same shape and size" trap. I think out of all the elements the airbending looks the best and the earthbending so far the worst. The Avatar state looked very janky as well, some shots looked like there wasn't even an actor there anymore and it was all animated. And not animated in a good way either, some of the movements were way to wobbly, reminding me of that weird broom flying cgi in the first harry potter movie where the character is flopping about awkwardly bc it's badly animated. The animals also look pretty weird to me, i can barely tell where Appa's face is most of the time. Also for some reason they have momo making monkey noises instead of lemur noises? Like he legit sounds like a chimpanzee? I wonder what that's about.
The costumes are very hit or miss. They're very bright and i've often seen them fit awkwardly on the actors. Suki's headband was practically sliding off of her head while doing a fight scene, and in Omashu an extra's headscarf literally slid off of her head as she walked out of frame. Don't even mention Bumi to me either, that guy looks absolutely insane to me and i mean that negative. I can't suspend my disbelief enough to pretend that's a real guy. I liked Suki's makeup however, and i really like how they did Katara's hair and outfit. We got our first glance at Ty Lee and Mai too, and i like that Ty Lee is basically a carbon copy of her cartoon outfit.
Some story choices are.... interesting. Some of them, i'm not sure whether i like them or not yet. I'm confused as to why they combined three different stories into the Omashu storyline. We have Bumi, Teo and the Mechanist, as well as Jet all piled up in the same city, and somehow Zuko is there as well. The Jet story happened way too quickly, and i'm confused as to why Sokka was so upset at Jet's betrayal when he hadn't even spoken to the guy at all, he didn't even know his name. I don't like the choice of having everyone split up in Omashu. There was a lot of focus on Katara and Sokka and Aang barely appeared. I will say i really loved the no bending fight Aang and Zuko had in Omashu. Such a shame that their choreography barely got any time to shine due to the fight scenes being edited like marvel movies to hide mistakes. This has me excited for the blue spirit episode though!
I don't like the way they revealed that Aang is the Avatar in the watertribe. Why is Gran Gran the one that immediately knows? Just bc she's old? I liked that Aang revealed it himself in the original, but in this one it's just Gran Gran telling everyone who he is and Sokka not even believing her.
Then there's the opening for the first episode. I have very mixed feelings. I like that they showed the bond between Gyatso and Aang, and i liked the way they switched between Gyatso's last stand and Aang falling into the water. I'm sticking to my guns however with saying that we didn't need to see the attack on the airtemples play out. I liked it being this mysterious event that happened so long ago it's become legend to anyone alive today. But now, as a viewer, we have more information than our main characters. It also took away from the emotional turmoil of Aang finding Gyatso's skeleton. In the original, there's still this slimmer of hope, are they really dead? Could some still be alive? Only for it to be ripped away then and there. Now the audience already knows Gyatso is dead, we know what Aang is about to find. They also didn't really linger on Aang's emotions after this, like at all? He buried Gyatso and basically went "alright where to next?"
There also seems to be a lot less bonding time, making the relationship between the characters in episode 1 and 2 very weird. Katara and Aang barely had one conversation in the first episode, and Katara was already talking about Aang changing her life and helping improve her bending after only one day. It feels very weird and forced. It gets better by episode 3, but it was definitely bad in the first two.
I'm gonna say it again but i'm mad about Sokka's sexism arc disappearing. Suki was angry at Sokka for just comparing her skills as a warrior to him, when she hadn't even seen him fight yet. She also starts out as being weirdly enchanted by Sokka just bc he's an outsider. He's not even attractive at all, and they're trying to sell him as some sort of heartthrob. I like their bonding time while they trained, but i don't like how immediately Sokka is hung up on her. He still needs to meet Yue, and idk about you but to me it would be weird for him to already like one girl, and suddenly jump to the next.
I'm not sure why Kyoshi is being Aang's main Avatar guide here? I always figured it should be the Avatar right before you that would do the job, so why did Kyoshi get to Aang before Roku? And why did she already give Aang the speech about saving the world? What else is Roku gonna do? I know we get the Hei Bai story in this show, so what's the point of the Hei Bai story when it doesn't lead to Roku's dragon coming to Aang to warn him about the comet? I'm not mad at this btw, genuinely just confused. I don't understand the point yet.
Onto the acting, once again very hit or miss. So far Gordon (Aang) has been one of the best. He's a very good representation of Aang's character, and i like that he brought out Aang's sassier side right away. Kiawentiio (Katara) so far has been really good too, and i like her chemistry with Gordon. I was prepared for Ian (Sokka) to be much worse than he ended up being, and a lot of jokes in the first episode did end up landing for me. Unfortunately the opposite is true for Dallas (Zuko), i was expecting his performance to be better than what it ended up being. It's not bad per se, but definitely less refined than i was hoping. Same for Paul (Iroh). I don't like the way he delivers some lines at all (especially the Jasmine Tea lines, it's way too forced, i don't actually believe he likes jasmine tea rn. In the original uncle barely mentions which tea he's drinking, and only once asks for jasmine tea bc it's his favorite. Otherwise he always just says "cup of tea" and never mentions the flavor. Idk why but the emphasis on jasmine tea really bothered me lol). I really liked Azula so far. Elizabeth brought a very cutthroat energy, which is precisely what i'd expect from a character like Azula. Daniel Dae Kim was also just everything i was hoping for and more. I'm hoping to see more of him (for his acting... no other reason.......)
Idk why but i was elated at seeing the cabbage merchant and hearing him say the line. Best moment of the whole show so far (and that's saying a lot i think lmao).
The music is very good. Some of the placement of the more dramatic music is a bit awkward? Like moments that i feel should have a low quiet melody seem to have a more dramatic flow which makes the scene lose emotional value to me. Maybe that's just my preference though. I like the nods to the original music throughout the show, especially for Kyoshi, the fire nation theme as well as the avatar theme, and then the exact same credits music as the original. I love the more epic/dramatic version of the avatar theme.
Overall, i am enjoying myself. I wasn't expecting greatness from this adaptation, and so far i'm remaining kind of neutral i think. It's not absolutely horrible, and i'm not cringing every five seconds. Of course it's never gonna compare to the beauty of the original animation. That's always going to remain untouchable to me. And this adaptation obviously does not come close at all. But it's fun, i guess, so i'm gonna keep watching.

Heartbreak High on Netflix: Let's talk about Sasha.
!! SPOILERS AHEAD !!
I've watched a lot of movies and shows, and I've read a lot of books, but I have never met a character that has made me so angry.
Sasha is a narcissistic, ableist bitch.
One of the first things that Sasha does is abandon Amerie completely when the news about the map breaks. I understand being upset and betrayed, but to walk away completely without even asking for an explanation is so baffling to me. She also can't remember if she cheated on Missy or not. How can you not remember that kind of thing?
When Harper shamed Dusty at the game, Sasha immediately called Harper a black hole of negativity and turned her back on her, and suddenly Sasha and Amerie were friends again? Sasha is constantly thinking she's a good person while flipping through friends as soon as they do something bad.
Now, her relationship with Quinni. When Quinni reveals to Sasha that she is autistic, I'm fairly certain that Sasha said something along the lines of "but you're, like, normal". Throughout the series, Sasha acts like she's understanding and an ally and activist, but repeatedly is annoyed with Quinni, especially in the episode Angeline.
Sasha must have known by then that Quinni has a routine, and if she doesn't follow that routine then her whole day is ruined, right? They'd been dating for a while so you think that she would know that, and I'm fairly certain that she did. But Sasha not only messed up the schedule for Quinni's book reading, but upset Quinni five (5) separate times that day. Let's list them, shall we?
Sasha shows up out of nowhere and wakes Quinni up from her nap. Honestly, who does that? Showing up at someone's house and waking them up.
She gets the bus driver to stop for Gelato on the way to the book reading, knowing that they're going to have to get off the bus and knowing that Quinni wanted to get there early. She made the driver stop anyway, didn't listen to Quinni's protests, and did what she wanted even though this wasn't her trip to derail.
She stopped to talk to a friend she hadn't seen in a while, letting a line form in front of them at the shop. Not only that, but she brought that friend on the bus with them, putting Quinni in between the two of them while they talked about a friend that Quinni didn't know, while she knew that Quinni can get overwhelmed.
When they were at the book signing, Sasha acted miserable and annoyed, when I don't think Quinni ever asked her to come. Sasha was on her phone the whole time, not even attempting to share Quinni's excitement for the book reading, and wasn't paying attention at all. Even if you don't enjoy something, I feel like you should still attempt to have fun if someone you care about is excited.
This is technically situation five, but it's a long one:
On the bus back home, Sasha was so upset with Quinni for the book signing. Quinni was talking passionately about how she wants to be a writer and how she wants to write a book, and Sasha says "I want to get pissed". She dismisses everything because she's upset that she didn't get to go to Amerie's party, when she could have gone. She chose to go out with Quinni and was upset that she wasn't somewhere else.
Quinni says that she can't deal with a party right now, and Sasha gets upset that she didn't get the night out that she wanted. She then says that she's always dong things for Quinni, and then says "what about me, do you ever think about me?". Then she drops the rudest line I have ever heard, and says "sometimes it's hard being with you when I just want to be a normal teenager". Who fucking says that?
Quinni asks if she's not normal enough, and Sasha tells her not to pull the autism card. Quinni had a good night, and she got to meet her favorite author and have her book signed, but everything came crashing down when Sasha said those things.
I've seen some Harper hate, but while Harper's action aren't excusable and they aren't justified, her actions are rooted in her trauma and what happened to her at the festival. With extensive therapy, Harper is probably a very nice girl. Her and Amerie were friends for what, at least a decade?
But Sasha is just a terrible person. I can't stand the way she treats Quinni, who is one of the kindest and sweetest people in the entire show. She has this image of herself, a good person, an ally, an activist, but in reality she's awful.
I want to see someone punch her so bad.

are you planning on watching the rest of the live action? I'm not trying to be confrontational or accusative here because it's obviously fine to be critical of it but it's kind of wild to me that you keep going off about it based on hearsay and you've only actually seen 1 episode
The reason I don't want to watch the rest of it is because of what I've been told lmao, like I don't need to see all of it to make up my mind when I get told the 1, 2, 3 of everything and got upset just from hearing it jfkg. I don't think it's hearsay to see clips or be told the script word for word somehow, it's not like people are just lying to me for fun about this. I don't think SEEING this version of Sanji NOT watching Zoro verse Mihawk and NOT shouting his line will make me go "Oh yeah that's great actually I'm so glad they excluded him", same with knowing Nami's village ACTUALLY treated her like shit or making Gin a 5 minute cameo where Sanji doesn't even need to put himself on the line for the Baratie. Like, I can watch it all for sure, but somehow I have a feeling I'd just get more upset from actually seeing it HHH
I watched the first ep and I did not feel One Piece, I have been told of the changes and feel even LESS of One Piece. I know myself enough to know I would just go into this tearing my hair out and the more I'm told the more my jaw drops at what the hell they've done LMAO like I really don't think looking at the pretty sets and the attractive actors is gonna change my mind 😭 and considering people who have seen the whole thing are finding reasoning in my complaints, I feel like perhaps this series is the predictable netflix show that's been on time and time again, you know? I don't particularly want to watch a car crash of my favourite series I guess

The lack of buddie has never been as bad as it is this season. At least in s5A they had the first 3 episodes and then a centric episode in 7. Buddie haven’t had a meaningful conversation since the premiere this season. They’re very purposely keeping them apart. Whether that’s Kristen trying to halt the shipping of them or it’s a narrative reason idk but it’s immensely frustrating as a buddie fan how they haven’t had a meaningful conversation since the premiere.
And I've said repeatedly that people can feel that way and be upset.
I have also said that unsolicited complaining in people's inboxes of it isn't fair to fans that are having a good time.
I'm a buddie shipper. I'm not frustrated or upset with how things are going. I'm quite happy with the season. Idk if you sending me this was prompted by my posts on Tuesday or if you just decided to come complain, but if it's the latter, I've been pretty open about having a good time or at least pretty positive about the season. So...
-
To be honest, I think it's very possible that they're narratively keeping them apart. I also think it could be that they're just changing stuff up and giving us some new dynamics because the fans responded well to it last season.
Someone sent me an ask that I didn't post and said they like the new dynamics but it shouldn't come at the cost of buddie. That Hen and Chim aren't seeing this distance.
And I disagree. It's an ensemble show with 7 main cast members and about 45 minutes a week to work with. With the choices being made, all of the usual dynamics aren't getting the screentime they normally would.
Hen and Buck are a central dynamic right now and we're definitely seeing that change things. We've seen Hen and Chim working together, the same that we've seen Buck and Eddie, but outside of Henren Begins when's the last time we had a major Hen and Chim scene?
-
Buck and Eddie are still interacting. They haven't been completely ripped apart. If I wanted to make a buddie in 6a gif set, every episode besides 6x03 would have something. They just haven't had any major moments. There's plenty of little moments and if we wanna talk narratively, it makes sense how this is all going.
Buck intentionally keeping distance from himself and the 118 (minus Hen) so that's contributed to this. He's doing something that he subconsciously knows he shouldn't and so we're seeing these team scene with him feeling removed. And we have seen Eddie trying to push a little and understand it every time.
-
Additionally, we've had 2/7 episodes being focused only on one relationship. We didn't see much of any dynamic that wasn't tied to Hen in 6x06.
-
All this to say, if you're that frustrated, take a break from the show. It's on Hulu so you don't have to wait a million years for it to come on Netflix. Or plenty of people download it for gifs, I'm sure you can find it somewhere.
Marie Kondo it. If it's not sparking joy, let it go. You can absolutely come back when you know how this is resolved and that it's resolved. It's just not making you happy right now and that's okay. It's how you approach being upset that might not be okay. Again I don't know what prompted you sending me this ask, but I will say that if it was just because you wanted to complain, then consider thinking about who you're complaining to and why you're upset.
(And unless I'm remembering wrong. We barely saw them outside of calls at work in 2b. There's when Maddie was taken, 2x14 and 2x18 that have some heavier scenes but that's all I can think of.)

Do you truly think Bughead stands a chance at getting endgame? I’ve tried to hold out hope these last two seasons. I thought once upon a time that eventually the payoff would be worth it, but the nonsense just goes on and on. I feel like BH’s get kicked in the teeth every episode and are punished for their years of devotion. And it’s not even like BA and JT are written well or have anywhere near the level of BH’s chemistry, but sometimes it feels like we’re stuck with them because RAS has disdain for his audience and is fixated on the “new” above honoring these characters and giving the show the ending it deserves. I’m sorry for being so negative. I just feel so stupid for continuing to invest anything in this show. I don’t want to discover a year from now that my time has been wasted and that the show is still trying to convince us that Betty and Jughead belong with other people and can’t even be assed to let them discuss anything not plot point related.
i've been avoiding these asks for a while because i don't want to come off like i'm telling anyone how to feel but since i keep getting asked i guess i'll try and give my honest opinion but hopefully without offending or upsetting anyone (jinxed by even saying it, i know).
bughead is not the first ship to get kicked in the teeth. they're not even the first ship to break up and have the writers ignore the fact that they dated for a good portion of time. they are not the first ship to date other people and totally act like they never dated until it's time to ramp up any drama. they are not the first ship to date, break up, date others, and then tell that new person that they love them.
and every ship i am thinking of for the above? they ended up together in the end. so yeah, i think it's possible. stories aren't told in a vacuum and shows that go on for 22 episodes or more need to drag out their narratives. these are not 8 episode netflix or hbo max shows that have limited time for their stories, they are filling a lot more air time. they have and will drag things out if they're trying to get to a certain point. yes, riverdale does this worse than others. 100%. 1000% even.
maybe it's a product of us all bingeing and watching shows with 8-10 eps a season but recently i was rewatching gilmore girls with my exchange student and i legit kept leaving the room because i felt like it was dragging on even tho i watched it when it was on week to week and was invested. there were a lot of episodes that just felt like they did nothing past fill some time. which is probably what they were doing when you need to make 22 of them in a season.
and listen, i'm not the biggest fan of anyone writing this show overall (how no one seems to know what anyone else is doing is just such a bad way to write?) but i don't think roberto actually has a disdain for the audience. ted? sure. we don't appreciate his genius and therefore suck. his arrogance is well known. evan? he wants attention. he got it. it was a dumb move. raise your hand if you're a bughead fic author who has written more interaction between betty and archie in your fics than this man (their king!) has written onscreen.
this show is badly run, written, and promoted. that's pretty obvious at this point. not a lot of people are watching, not a lot of people care anymore and i totally get why. i'm not going to tell you to continue being invested in something making you unhappy, your fictional escapes should bring you joy so taking a break when needed is always a good idea.
personally, if they're going to drag out this whole timelines mess, i don't think everything that happened will be ignored, it's just a continuation—and i'm not going to assume anything about the 50s thing, we don't even know how long it's going to last or what will happen within it. but we haven't even seen the finale yet and at the end of the day, i feel like they didn't have tabitha tell veronica it was 50/50 for the fun of it. but that's me and i think everyone should do what works for them when it comes to this show and fandom.

WEEKEND CHAT :: 9 JANUARY 2023 :: TV DRAMA
Hello all,
I'm trialling a new home for my YouTube Weekend Chat longer writings - especially for TV/MOVIES/BOOKS - as Tumblr makes the writing & publishing process a lot easier. I hope you don't mind; do let me know if you have any problems accessing these posts here.
I'll catch up with three big Netflix TV productions today; before that, a quick bit of news:
The new show by the team who brought us DarK was .. not successful enough? 🤔
‘1899’ Canceled After One Season At Netflix
We don't know all the reasons of course (we DO know that Netflix is scrambling to cut costs) - but it looks like cost could be an important factor in this case.
On Reddit, there was a discussion about it:
The sad implication is that this type of decision does affect how people watch (and will watch in the future): They will become more cautious and not watch the first season any more but wait to see if a second season is greenlit.
We haven't watched 1899 yet, but I believe it ends on a big cliffhanger, so naturally people are upset.
As I've pointed out before, Netflix is not the only service struggling with decisions over expensive series and long-term planning (we've seen equally upsetting decisions by Amazon Prime, for example). But Netflix does seem to go through these issues more frequently (which indicates there's a problem with their streaming & financing model).
So, what does that mean for the future? It means with more cautious viewing behaviour, many shows (especially smaller, more niche, more unorthodox ones) will struggle even more to make an impact and get renewed. It doesn't bode well for fostering creativity in my opinion.
==========================
OK, on to our first Big Drama series: Alice in Borderland (adapted from the manga by Haro Aso) Season 2. (Note: If you haven't watched S2 yet, there will be a few unavoidable, but minor, spoilers in my discussion)
Netflix has an article about the actors and changes for season 2:
‘Alice in Borderland’ Levels Up in Season 2
Tumblr media
Season 2 really felt very different to us: in terms of production value, cinematography, choreography of fight scenes and much more, this was a BIG step up. It really looked and felt superb. 👍🏻
Question for those of you who have watched S2 : did you have a strong "The Last of Us" impression, too, from the way the Tokyo Borderland city scenery was portrayed, all overgrown? I just couldn't shake it. And then ... SPOILER ALERT! ==>
... there was the ... scene with the elephants! My brain just wired "Giraffe"! 😁🦒
==> END SPOILER ALERT!
Is that just me?
We thought the second season was overall better than the first (the first had various issues with strange pacing, sometimes unimpressive acting, the story veering around at times) and we were truly hooked.
The big divide for most people will be over whether they found the ending (and therefore explanation of the true events) believable and satisfying.
If you feel the need to either 'study up' more, or don't want to watch Season 2 but want a summary of what happens, then Netflix obliges with this article: Game Cleared: ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2 Ending Explained
I won't discuss the ending too much, since many may not yet have seen it. But while it is obviously pretty 'out there' - what else could it be with a story like this, seriously? - we didn't think it was unbelievable. In terms of bringing closure, a death game story like this with an apocalyptic setting really has its work cut out. What matters is the journey, and the final episode had enough twists and turns to satisfy, we felt.
You could call it a bit of an easy 'cop out' kind of ending. But what kind of ending can you possibly have for a story like this? I haven't read the manga, but I assume from what I've read online that the adaptation sticks pretty close to the conclusion (?).
However - BIG HOWEVER - there are enough questions that remain, unresolved or without clear explanation, to warrant some probing. 'Alice in Borderland': 11 Unanswered Questions After Season 2
The really 'teasing' issue is of course the zoom in on the Joker card right at the end. Woah - is that an indication of more Alice in Borderland coming? It could be, couldn't it? (I believe Joker is actually a character in the manga, but doesn't appear in the TV series. Maybe this is a chance to propel the story even further?)
PoodlePa and I obviously talked about AiB for a long time afterwards, and something strange happened. PP quoted - off the top of his head - some lines from a TS Eliot poem (ya know, the guy who wrote famous poetry a hundred years ago, including The Wasteland).

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock - from "Prufrock, 1917"
Do I dare
Disturb the universe?
In a minute there is time
For decicions and revisions which a minute will reverse.
--------------------
If you remember the significance of the "one minute" in the AiB ending, then you'll see why I thought this was eerily hitting the mark!
Had enough of Death Games? 😯
Let's move on .. to more grisly deaths and murder mystery investigations!
I'll discuss The Pale Blue Eye next in Part 2!

Season 12 Episode 13: "Spencer"
Can I just say, Season 12 episode 13 "Spencer" makes me so incredibly upset and I wish I could go back and fix it personally.
Like okay, it's not like a bad episode. It's well written, the suspense is there, it's interesting no doubt.
However
This. Is. Not. Spencer.
Like, I'm honestly kind of pissed as to how this whole thing has started playing out. I recognize that there was a need to make sure Matthew could step away from the show and work on personal projects but the way that they handled so much of Reid's absences makes me just sick to my stomach honestly.
It might be the fact that I consumed the 12 years worth of content up to this point in a relatively short time span, (its been about a month of me watching the show, trying to finish it up to season 12 before it leaves Netflix) but I feel like I know these characters better than I know myself. I have carefully watched the last 12 seasons, I've seen them react to some scary shit and get through fucking awful things in their personal lives. Not a single thing about Spencer would lead him into something this legally precarious.
there is so much that I do understand, like his reliance and trust in experimental medicine (he is a man of science, *cough cough* three PhDs), and his extreme desire to logically fix things and have an answer for everything because that's how he functions and has always functioned. That part about his situation I get, especially when it comes to taking care of his mom, something he has been doing since his dad left. He is fiercely protective of the people that he loves.
However, Dr. Spencer Reid is not an idiot. He would have done his research about what was in those vials. He would have made sure that nothing in the medicine was illegal stateside. He would have known better.
Spencer has made it his business to know everything about everything. It's not even necessarily intentional all of the time, due to the whole memory thing, but knowing everything gives him a sense of control. I know this because I am the exact same way. The security comes from not being able to be surprised, because surprises are always bad, especially in his line of work (and especially considering how this turned out). Consider season 11 episode 11, "Entropy", when Spencer first meets Cat Adams. The whole plot of that episode is based around the fact that Cat prepared for every possible scenario, but Spencer prepared beyond that. He thought of every single detail, he knew for a fact that he could take her down no matter what happened, and he was even able to do so when the plans changed and they had to save all of the people from the bomb on the city gas line. People's lives were on the line, Spencer prepared, and Spencer won.
I can hear the arguments now against this point. "Well Spencer had his team with him then, and he didn't in Mexico," and "Well when his mother is involved, he's to close to think that logically about it," but to those I say politely shut the fuck up. To me, these are both faulty arguments and let me tell you why.
First let's tackle the team argument. Yes his team was there day-of to help take Cat down, but Spencer had to do a lot of preparation before they even sent him into that room with her. As you may recall, the entire plan itself was Spencer's idea. He suggested going undercover. he knew that if cover was blown, she would be more likely to negotiate with a peer. He led the entire conversation with very minimal input from his team who were in his ears the whole time. Spencer masterfully negotiated through that situation because he planned. He considered every possible scenario that could have happened, he made predictions, and he prepared accordingly. That is the work of a genius, which he is, not just in abstract intellect but in social prowess and essentially psychological warfare. This is a man who thinks things through.
Through the entirety of the drug acquisition process over the last few months, Reid was not thinking things through. It's very clear to any viewer that Spencer was clouded and reckless which is entirely unlike himself. Even in the most desperate and delicate of situations, he has never hesitated or failed to read every case file, scour every possible corner of a case, and recognize something that no one else could see because of it. Reid would not have just accepted that the medicine was fine. He would have at least wanted to know the fucking ingredients, examine the validity of this drug he would be giving his mother. Even in his most desperate state to help his mom, he wouldn't have been this stupid about it. He couldn't afford to be that stupid about it, because it was his own mother after all.
Which brings me to the next argument, that he wasn't thinking straight because it had to do with his sick mother. I call bullshit on that too because who in their right mind would give their mother experimental medicine if they had no idea what was in it, especially Dr. Spencer "I am going to attempt to play every single possible combination of chess moves ever" Reid. He is nothing if not thorough. Under no circumstance could anyone every convince me that Reid would not have inquired about the ingredients before he was in a fucking jail cell drugged out of his mind in Mexico and only at the prompt of drug testing by Mexican police.
Granted, I am on the first episode of this arc, so maybe they handle some of this. Only time will tell. However, I do not believe that they will be able to convince me that this is normal or expected behavior from Spencer. There is no way to explain this happening other than meta writing reasons of Matthew needing to be able to step away, which feels really irresponsible story wise. There are so many better ways to have handled the absences and this is truly my least favorite of the infinite possibilities of excuses they could have used.
I will probably reblog this and build my opinion as I watch more, but let me tell y'all I am upsettti spaghetti about this and it makes my stomach hurt.

Liveblog: Sword of Destiny by Andrzej Sapkowski
Context: I caught bits and pieces of several scattered episodes of the Netflix Witcher series while at my parent’s place, and have had my curiosity piqued! I’ve already read The Last Wish since then; you can find my thoughts here.
I'm posting my thoughts about this book short story by short story. Part one is here!
Disclaimer: Names might be misspelled, and most quotes will be paraphrased. I’m reading via audiobook at work.
.
A Shard of Ice
I do really like that more often than not, fights aren’t perfectly easy or clean for Geralt. They take effort!
Goodness he is very upset with the muck, isn’t he. Poor guy.
Oh hey we’re back with Yennefer. I wonder if this is post-dragon incident or prior to the falling out that had her upset during the dragon incident? (There’s no particular indication that we’re jumping back in time, but then. There doesn’t often seem to be, with these stories. 😂)
Definitely post-dragon
Damn this guy--Istredd?--is a jerk
Ohh okay hey. This whole ‘witchers don’t have feelings’ thing is something I’d been wondering about, actually! I've wondered where it came from and whether or not it was just straight up fanon.
So let's talk about it!
Andrjez was very careful to thoroughly debunk this in the narrative well before letting the mage say this shit and before letting Geralt get all tangled up about it. I feel like that's pretty clear and intentional?
Pretty sure most of Geralt echoing the mage’s words is pure, dripping bitterness and sarcasm.
Like seriously we just followed Geralt being anxious and grumpy all morning, we just saw him being upset by people’s comments, we’ve seen him glad for a friendly face in the previous story, we’ve seen him genuinely desperate to help Jaskier, we’ve seen him lonely and regretful and longing to talk to someone, we just saw him genuinely disgusted by his work…
.
Actually yeah. Fuck. Let’s talk about that disgust specifically!
Because it actively stood out to me on its own merits just in that first scene as seeming like a strong reaction, and now… now it seems like it’s the one claim that Geralt maybe does believe to at least some degree, is echoing more genuinely.
And. Look. Completely different scenario, reversed direction, but… I can’t help but think of many unrealized ace-spec folk’s experiences, looking around at allo society and allo people’s actions and thinking, ‘Holy hell, surely they’re all just… exaggerating? Playing it up? Does no one have any self control?’
Because we genuinely don’t share and can’t imagine that intensity of feeling on that particular subject.
But no! Attraction is a real thing that people do genuinely feel, and quite strongly. Even if I just have to take their word for it.
And some people do have self control despite those feelings, and some people don’t.
And. I can’t help but think of that now, that type of disconnect in communication and experiences; the conclusions you draw based on what you see and how people act vs. what you feel.
Geralt sees his actions—his work, slogging through the muck despite his disgust—and he hears people express their disgust and their unwillingness to do the same, to the point where they declare he must not feel the same as them if he’s able to do the work… and maybe he believes them, on that front, to at least some degree. He believes that the disgust they feel must be so much stronger than his.
(Spoiler: I don’t think it is.)
(Disclaimer/context: I think that I do genuinely have a somewhat muted disgust reaction, or at least that I am not as disgusted by certain things as other folk are. There are things I’m willing to clean or approach and that genuinely don’t bother me all that much, but that send other folk away gagging.)
(Which is why Geralt’s reaction in the first scene struck me so strongly — my hindbrain went, ‘it’s just some trash and decay…? If you’ve already decided to commit, if you’ve had a few moments to desensitize, why is it still bothering you so much?’)
(Admittedly I’ve never literally submerged myself in that sort of thing but like. I’ve watched Dirty Jobs. People do!)
(Also admittedly I literally run away with my heart in my throat from people vomiting. The joys of phobias. 😂)
(Extra grumping: If it isn’t clear, I’m also obviously of the firm belief that some people feeling some things more or less strongly than others—or not at all—is a completely normal thing!)
(And that telling people what they do and don’t feel is an exercise in futility and misjudgment.)
.
BACK ON TOPIC
Huh. Interesting how averse Yennefer is to the word mutant.
I don't... much like the shard of ice metaphor? Or don't get it? Or...
Okay so look, at this point it's probably pretty clear that I do not often connect with or even clearly understand more... idk. Flowery? Indirect? Ways of presenting things.
That's a personal taste thing and a personal reading comprehension thing and I can admit that, hah.
I’m also not even certain that I’m putting it right because like. The Broken Earth Trilogy? FUCKING GORGEOUS, one of my all time favorites, and goodness if its narration and storytelling isn’t complex and confusing in some ways.
It has been too long since I first drafted these notes, and I read this last part of things without much time to write, so:
Asshole
^ I no longer know what that note was reacting to. xD
Fucking hell girl quarrels
^ This can be just a general complaint on its own I think, hah.
So look it's just. Like. Yennefer obviously has some poly leanings, but this is not a poly *situation,* and I'm not sure how to talk about it, but. I have. Feelings? Mixed feelings.
Oh! Hey! Hey!
This is very sad but I am finally confident in one (1) instance of guessing what the unspoken thing was. They aren't able to say to one another whether they love one another.
Glad I can pick up on it when it's *this* blatant at least :'D
And it's... character wise, this is honestly pretty interesting? I just. These two are so... *fractured,* they're both so doubtful that they can feel or be anything positive to one another or to themselves, and that very doubt is itself creating some of what they're afraid of, and it's.
Yeah. Interesting.
.
There's that story! I might need to reread this one in print, give it some closer attention without wandering off into my own musings, hah.
I really liked some things in it; I obviously liked some of the worldbuilding & character *info*.
I just didn't much like -- idk, the tone? All that much. And I still have issues with how Sapkowski handles women and romance and Yennefer's motivations. :')

Do you have any tips on how to write the stranger things characters in character and not out of character? I see so many bad takes and mischaracterizations and I just want to avoid them
hi, love! i'm so terribly sorry this took so long for me to answer! truthfully, i know what you're talking about with generally bad characterizations, and i wanted to create a little list of tips and tricks that i personally use to try and write the most canon characters that i can!!
take note of the bad characterizations you see and make sure to avoid them - this probably is very easy for you since you're saying that you're noticing them, and that's good! we all have separate little versions of our faves in our heads when we write, but that doesn't mean that they have to be ooc! if you see something that isn't right or that you don't like, remember it so that you make sure not to do the same yourself!
ask other authors - if you know or admire other authors who write specific characters very well, send them an ask or a message (me included, i'm always willing to help anyone out!) about it and i'm sure they can either help you rework it, or they'll tell you it's absolutely fine!
rewatch some of the scenes (if possible) - i know this especially works for me. when i first wrote for eddie (who is a character who is severely mischaracterized, imo) i made sure to watch youtube compilations and some of his episodes and scenes on netflix! i think it really helped me get into his adorably dorky side a little more, and it can totally help you out with dialogue and interactions that are less wrong-feeling.
general mischaracterizations that i see often - here are a list of some of the most general mischaracterizations i've seen recently, regarding a lot of different characters.
eddie - people tend to completely forget about his dorky personality and they turn him into some badass hero. the irony of eddie munson is that he looks intimidating as hell, but wouldn't even be capable of hurting a fly. much less does he want to hurt a fly.
steve - i've seen a ridiculous amount of fics that make steve a complete asshole for no reason, even when the plot takes place in later seasons. i can list ways that this could work, but in general i just don't think it does unless you create an actual reason for him to do so that aligns and makes sense. also fics where he's angry with the kids and is genuinely rude to them make me so upset because no!! he would not do that!! in general we need more fics that include him and the kids, tbh!!
robin - so i'll admit, i think robin's character may be confusing for people because of her contrast in s3 and s4, but you can write both!! you can write her with her little anxious habits and stuff while also giving her the cool scenes! really she's been like that the whole time if you pay attention. i mean, just remember the whole "are you kidding me? i made that shit up" scene on the boat??? (i'm remembering it.... i will never forget it...)
these are the most common mischaracterizations i've seen, and i hope that all of this helps you a little!!

The King: Eternal Monarch - Episode 6
Tumblr media
I’m super tired, but there were some bugs in my hotel room, so I had to switch and now I can’t really seem to fall asleep anymore. I still have two episodes downloaded for my layover, but Netflix doesn’t want to cooperate anymore tonight… So might as well go for something else on the list… I’m really not thrilled about this one since I sincerely dislike the main actor but oh well. I started it, now I must finish it. And it’s about time. I don’t remember any of the names of the characters, this review might be a little messy.
So Lee Gon came to get Tae Eul in Seoul. Of course, in a private helicopter. Of course that the Prime Minister hears of its arrival. She doesn’t manage to get any information on Tae Eul, but she’s quite upset about the meeting. Now the king’s cooking for his girl like a pro chef. Cause head lady Noh showed him, since it’s the only food he can eat without having it tasted. He talks about his past. She says she needs her ID and to go home. He doesn’t want to let her go and will keep her in his world. He’s already a shitty person ugh. He still shows her. I forgot that it was the one he held onto since he was a child. Anyways. He only sends her back because the national security council has been called on by the Prime Minister.
Everything is happening all around and keeps skipping from one scene to another and I find it very hard to summarize the action without going in too much details. So I'm sorry if this recap seems a little scattered, I think I will need some more time also to get a little more into this story (especially since I wasn't so thrilled with it to begin with).
So basically, what's happening is that some Japanese military ships are about to enter Corea's water. So the Prime Minister doesn't want to stay idle about it. Lee Gon somewhat kind of agrees and says it's time for war. So he puts on his uniform and promises to come back to Tae Eul. She goes back home, with the ID from 25 years ago, because someone took the one from Head court lady Noh and they can't confirm who could have done that.
So, Lee Gon goes on his ship to defend the Kingdom of Corea's waters. The Japanese are like good, they won't attack since the king's there. Lee Gon is more in the mood "they dare come into my territory? Let's shoot some missiles at them so they have a fair warning." So far, it seems to work, because that means that they are reading to go at war if Japan was trying to push further in. Anyways, Japan backs up and it helps the Prime Minister to gain popularity. But she's upset because China wants to speak with the court about the visas instead of with her. She's never happy that lady.
Tae Eul is still waiting for Lee Gon to come back, but she has no news. She's listening to some tape and discovers something shocking to her. But I can't remember why it is so, because I was too lazy to go over my older reviews of this drama. Something about Lee Gon's grandfather or something. I don't know.
Lee Gon learns that there was something weird about the dead body of his uncle. It showed signs of a natal disease that he didn't have. So they don't know why it's like this. Because it's the one from the other world, but oh well. Lee Gon guesses that his uncle isn't dead and that he's going to get the other half of the magic ancestral stick.
I forgot that this drama is basically an everlasting add for the alley. Now I really want to get a bubble tea.
When Tae Eul sees Lee Gon in front of her home when she gets back, she runs towards him to embrace him. He thinks he's a danger for her. To be honest, I'm like... they've only known each other for 6 episodes. It's even too early for holding hands by accident, let alone purposely hug each other. I've never seen a drama rush the love story so fast. It loses all the best part which is reaching the end of the drama and being looking for that first kiss, that shouldn't be satisfying, but actually is. I don't know. They forgot to follow the recipe and instead of a cake, I'm being served pancake. Please, I need more fluffiness.
And that will be all for episode 6. Thanks for tuning in!

Thank you very much for the reccomendations! I'm a bit lazy on watching shows (litterally took me like a year to finish an anime i watched) but I tend to get them finished if im hooked upon them + I tend to watch at night. I've only watched 4 so far (1 out of the 4 i havent completed yet) I've seen sweet home already and it was amazing, but it made me cry. (Sweet home was my 2nd kdrama) I've also started all of us are dead and IM LOVING IT, i rlly need to finish it as i havent resumed it in like a month, im on episode 8 currently ! I have business proposal, alice in borderland in my list on netflix and i plan to watch squid game at some point, ill look at the others as well! I've also watched extracurricular, though I thought it was okay there's just one character I really dispised that ruined it for me (almost dropped it but decided to finish it bc of the 2 characters I rlly liked in the series) I do have a reccomendation though! I really reccomend strangers from hell, although it was removed from netflix in may (which im upset about as it was my first and is currently my favorite kdrama) its a horror/psychological thriller but its really good!! Though have you heard all of us are dead is getting a season 2?? but not just all of us are dead... Sweet Home has been confirmed for not just a season 2, but a season 3 as well!! I'm excited for both (and this means I need to finish all of us are dead) I suppose I lean towards the horror/thriller genre but I'm open to other genres! Sorry if this is a bit long, I kinda got carried away with this but I really give Strangers From Hell a strong reccomendation if you find a place to watch it as well as find the time! At your own pace ofc! You're welcome and thank you as well for answering my question and writing such fabulous work! I'll definately try to look into your reccomendations! You have an amazing day as well! (its currently 3:14am for me ill be going to sleep in a bit)
I think I'm the same to be honest! Unless something has me hooked I'll watch it slowly and only on occasion! I've watched a few Anime's and the only ones I watch over and over again are "Sailor Moon", "The way of the househusband" and "My Hero Academia" I loved them alooootttt!
all of us are dead had me sobbbinngggg!! I originally only watched it because my friend was talking a lot about it and I wanted to check it out. I finished it in two days T-T and I loved every moment of it! I'm super excited that they're going to make a new season of it!!!!
extracurricular has been on my list for a long time, I totally really need to check it out! OH! GIRL FROM NOWHERE! It's not Korean its a Thai but I forgot to mention that in my suggestions!!! I've been hooked on it! Its so soooo good!
I'll have to see if I can find strangers from hell somewhere, it always came up in my suggested feed but I never looked into it T-T I'll totally check it out though! Thank you!
I think I'm leaning more toward thriller/horror genres too, they always do so so well with it! There's two films that had me GRIPPED "the call" and "Forgotten" let me tell you the TWISTS AND THE JUMPS! I was sdgjksklffsdf I can't even express how much love I have for those "horror/thriller" films!
Oh my goodness! Yes go to sleep I hope you rest well my love

Hi! So I'm watching GG on Netflix for the 1st time, still have 10 eps left, and decided to check out Tumblr and some blogs for commentary and stuff and stumbled upon yours. I feel like ranting and have no one to do so, sorry! So, is it just me or did they do a total 180 on Dean to justify keeping him? Like, in s1 he's a D-bag, serial cheater, terrible businessman who almost got his family broke and FAKED CANCER. And now he's the superstar salesman and best guy ever? It bothers me a lot TBH.
Y'all... You came to Tumblr for the show and found my blog. Oh, dear sweet anon, the stans are gonna be PISSED.
Tumblr media
Many—including those who think they get to decide such things—do not consider me part of the fandom because I'm *so* negative. Consider yourself warned 😈
To your point (and don't apologise, my asks are always open for ranting and even raving), I actually do not think they did a total rewrite of his character; rather they emphasised certain aspects of his character and tried to justify other aspects. I've always said (and a lot of both canon and things the writers have said support this) that the show was meant to portray the Beth & Dean relationship as a core relationship of the show on par with Beth-Annie-Ruby. So, in that respect, the writers thought that Dean's "sins" would be seen as part of a complicated marriage. And part of an interesting story. They did not get that the audience wouldn't give a shit about Dean's manpain. They did not get that the reason people disliked Dean was because of what they wrote and instead tried to pass it off as the audience being too simple and too blinded by horniness for Rio. And so as the audience continued to dislike Dean, they pushed more and more Dean story to try to get the audience to be interested in him and enjoy watching his stories.
But why I say it wasn't a complete 180 is because some of the seeds are there from the beginning. Like, for the Boland marriage problems. In the very first episode we see that Beth is hurting herself—choosing to wax is a total valid choice, but the framing in the pilot is that Beth is doing something uncomfortable that she doesn't particularly enjoy or value—because she has neglected the sexual aspect of her marriage. (And actually, in that scene, the dialogue reveals that the non-sex Boland marriage was due to "normal" disregard. The notion of postpartum depression doesn't come up until season 2.) That scene and the one in the diner with Annie & Ruby (Bed Bath & Beyond coupons) show that Beth has taken her marriage for granted in a way; which is an understandable occurence for a long-term relationship. But it's not portrayed that Beth is particularly upset that she & Dean aren't in a great place. So, from the jump, the writers attempted to put some blame on Beth. It—of course—did not work at all. You cannot have Matthew Lillard burying his face in 20-something crotch while Christina Hendricks and her expressive face is crying and raging. The audience is going to want to fight for her and against whoever hurt her. Another early scene that reveals the writers' intention is the one where Dean is talking about Beth & Amber to the unsuspecting customer. The writers think this will show us that Dean is conflicted and remorseful. The audience saw a pathetic midlife crisis caricature talking about women as cars. Ultimately, the writers kept getting frustrated by the audience reaction and so they emphasised this "it's a complicated relationship between two people who have both done bad things" slant. And so we get so many scenes from Dean's POV where he is shown to be concerned, scared, and caught off guard by Beth and her "new life." The writers straight up (in an interview) equated Beth having sex with Rio—after she stopped wearing her wedding ring and only let Dean return home because (1) his "cancer" and then (2) his being shot by Rio—as the same as Dean's (as you say) serial cheating while Beth thought the marriage was ok.
A second area where I'll say the seeds were there from the beginning is Dean's competence as a salesperson. We know he made "bad investments," but we also know that he kept the dealership open for close to 20 years. A straight-up bad salesman couldn't do that. But— again—as with the above example, the audience saw a man who put his family in a precarious financial situation that directly led to Beth deciding to rob the grocery store. So the writers pushed hard on Dean the skilled natural salesman who is stymied by the corporate culture (the car dealership he goes to work for in season 2) and he just needs an understanding environment where he can thrive (the spa store).
This is getting long and I could continue and continue (let me know if I should 😬). But, essentially, I agree with you that they pushed the "Dean is a great father! Beth is putting the family in danger!" vibe hard as the show went on; I just disagree that it came out of nowhere.
Hope this somewhat "answers" your ask. Thanks for stopping by my little bitty corner of the internet and feel free to browse my many Good Girls thoughts.

hii! i hope this doesn't sound weird. i recently finished vincenzo and i've seen a lot of people talk about the villains don't deserve to love scene and as much as i love it, i don't really remember watching it and now i can't find it on netflix?? is it a deleted scene or something, if you know? or if you know the minute in the ep although i'm aware that's way too specific. thanks anyway hope you have a great day✨✨🤍
hey! this isn't weird at all!! since you watched vincenzo recently on netflix, you probably never saw the 'villains don't deserve love' scene (and several other scenes with product placement, like the kopiko scene in ep 15).
if you weren't watching while the show aired on netflix, then you probably didn't see that scene actually. see, that scene was actually deleted after the episode was aired because korea had a product placement controversy. that scene contained an product placement promoting a chinese bibimbap company so it was later edited out of the episode.
(there were actually a couple scenes that were edited out, and actually i'm pretty sure they reedited the version on vincenzo that is up right now, because in the first episode, when vincenzo is sitting on the airplane to korea, in the originally aired version, it was the english version of adrenaline that played, not the italian version.)
it's actually a pity because that scene was very important, and gave us so much insight into both vincenzo's character and his relationship with cha young, and honestly a lot of us were upset when it was deleted.
i'm not a 100% sure of the minute, but i do know it happened after vincenzo broke up with min seong and min seong stands in the rain with the sign on his phone. while you probably won't find these scenes in netflix, if you check kiss asian, i'm pretty sure they have the original version of the show.
