Good morning. Season 4 finale.

Holy smokes gang. What an episode. I absolutely loved it. I think it took a little bit for me to become really invested despite the in medias res thing we had going on, but once that action started I was in it. The visuals this episode were great, I especially liked the description of the mollusk mask on the viziers face. I also was quite pleased about the little reference to hastur being the peacock king that’s fun.

I know a lot of people are sad about the butcher. I am not because as soon as he showed up again I figured he would be one of the casualties of the episode, and narratively I like that it was Kayne who did it as opposed to Larson or an unnamed cultist or alien, especially considering I had a theory that Kayne was connected to the music in his head and the powers he had. I did love the twist of him being on our side though I actually audibly reacted to that. It surprised me but made sense in the perfect way. It also makes perfect sense to not include that scene, but I am excited to see some of the fan work that comes out of that missing piece. I’m AMAZED that Charlie managed to make it out alive, but then again he might be bleeding out on a street in Spain right now. Oh well. No body no death so I’m counting him as still kicking.

Speaking of Charlie, I loved the scene where John was forced to come clean. I liked how it twisted the previous scene of Arthur speaking for John and John finally being heard by someone else and feeling so so happy, to now be forced into a position where that newfound relationship is potentially going to be destroyed because he no longer has the option of privacy. Wild.

Of all the scenes with yellow, predictably Arthur’s confrontation and apology was my favorite. He’d already admitted fault in a previous episode but this I think is where it really hit home. And in other lines, while Yellow remained adamant that he didn’t care, you could tell that he genuinely did want to understand the connection between Arthur and John, and wanted to understand why he couldn’t experience the same thing. Most tragic fragment of a nightmare king. I hope you have fun flaying Larson alive for the next couple thousand years. Also why was Larson so flirty this episode dude he killed your son stop whispering in his ear like that.

And then of course, we get to Kayne. Kayne Kayne Kayne Kayne. Glad we got confirmation that Kayne isn’t/it doesn’t matter if he’s nyarlthotep because while have a fondness for the crawling chaos and Call of Cthulhu mythos, I actually like when things are separate from that. Plus I think it makes him scarier if he can’t quantify his existence. Holding out his bloody hand for Arthur to take and Arthur choosing to go with him willingly obviously paralleling his denial of Larson earlier in the episode. I also liked his takedown of Larson a lot. Fuck that guy.

Anyway @everyone who questioned why I draw Kayne covered in blood in every scene even when he’s not fresh off a carcosan murder spree how does it feel to be wrong.

Holy shit? Imagine a guy's eyes just *flying* out of his head, and then smashing like glass? That's such a weirdly comical way to blind a guy. Kayne could have just stabbed them, or magically took away his sight and left the eyes- but no he makes them pop out of his head and shatter like glass when they hit the floor. And then he sends Noel somewhere- fuck, who knows where? Maybe Spain. HUH? Not a city. . . Not a region. . . just. . . Maybe Spain! Man Kayne's just havin' fun! I'm gonna talk about episode 18 once again because holy fuck that episode sure does make me want to eat glass/pos

Ok so the argument in episode 18. It's Bad. It is a genuinely horrific argument that ended in physical violence, which sure is an accomplishment when you literally share a body with the person you are fighting with.

Now, most arguments that John and Arthur have, are eventually just swept under the rug, after all there's no point bickering when there is a creature trying to kill you to death right? But this one is not.

John broke Arthur's trust and Arthur does not let go of that. It takes him a while before he even gets on civil terms with John. He says that he'll only agree to work with John if John agrees to never mention Faroe's name ever again, which John agrees to.

A lot of their arguing and petty squabbling in episode 19 comes from Arthur still being upset from what John said in episode 18.

Episode 20 rolls around, and John and Arthur are back to being on good terms for the majority of the episode. The King however, brings up this argument to Arthur, and Arthur states that whilst he hates Join for betraying his trust, he doesn't hate John for calling him an unfit father.

Whilst that may be true, it doesn't mean it didn't hurt for his best friend to tell him that he sees Arthur as the absolute worst part of himself.

Anyway, we come to episodes 24 and 25 which is where things really get interesting in my opinion. Throughout episodes 21-23, Arthur has told Yellow about how he reminds him of the worst parts of John, the parts that betrayed his trust.

But now John is back. John is back and Arthur is overjoyed to have his friend back but things have happened whilst John has been gone, and now Arthur is dead set on killing a man that John knows nothing about. A man that Arthur simply describes as a bad person, meaning he deserves to die.

John is naturally shocked at this. Arthur is a man who has generally shown sympathy and kindness to all sorts of people and creatures when he's sure they're not a direct threat to his life.

What John doesn't know is that Larson cheerfully bragged to Arthur about willingly sacrificing his own daughter as she begged for him to save her. John does not know this because Arthur does not tell him this.

Of course he doesn't. Arthur has never been one to talk willingly about his own trauma, this on top of the way John betrayed his trust in episode 18? Of course he's not going to tell him.

The last thing Arthur wants at a time when he is already incredibly emotionally vulnerable is for John to turn around and say something along the lines of "is he really that much worse than you?"

John is changing and doing his best, but Arthur is human and emotional and John hurt him, and that's something that he does not simply forget.

I don’t think rent is a perfect show by any means but it feels very disingenuous to see people critique it for like. Having middle class assholes as the protagonists because I feel like it’s VERY upfront about that. Maureen’s art is fucking ridiculous and does nothing for actual social change. Mark literally gets yelled at by a homeless woman for profiting off her pain. To me that musical is this kind of reckoning of these people that romanticize this idealized bohemian lifestyle with the inescapable black cloud that is AIDS. It absolutely could have been more clear about that but I do think it is aware of the hypocritical nature of its own characters in some respect

+ when people get upset at Larson for making a musical about AIDS as a straight HIV- man like holy shit get a life. I wonder why the main character is also a straight HIV- man literally watching his friends die around him well never know

various thoughts (i have many but here’s a handful):

listening to the first episode, after John asked Arthur to look in the mirror and said he had the demeanor of someone not to be fucked with, i thought “…i’m sorry but no. this man is a sad wet cat. get him a warm blanket”

speaking of part 1, i was listening to it in the backseat of a car with headphones in so that was a game of turning up the volume to hear dialogue over the road sounds and turning it down to not demolish my eardrums when John shouted

by the time i was wrapping up part 4, i started to wonder if “John Doe” was a name the fandom made up for him, but when he explained to Arthur that he really liked the name and wanted to be called that…my heart absolutely melted. can you tell John’s my favorite? he’s my favorite :)

the one bit where Arthur is asked questions directly tied to everything that had happened since being bound with John? fucking impeccable. i would’ve said “ohh shit” aloud if i weren’t in public at the time

Kayne said he had some sort of ulterior motive! what the heck! i haven’t seen much in the way of theories yet but John’s slip-up about being gone for a long time, i definitely don’t think he’s telling the truth. that said, i don’t think he wants to hurt Arthur in any way. especially considering he was trying his damndest to save him during that entire conversation

the piano strings guy. holy shit. what was he called? the butcher? absolutely terrifying, and now he’s coming after John and Arthur. fun!

the dynamic between Arthur and John is incredible. not romantic not platonic but a secret third thing (*vague gesture in their direction that does not explain what the third thing is*). they’re just Them. not to mention i nearly cried over the fact that before John named himself, when he and Arthur still didn’t like each other, Arthur still took to calling him “friend.” i’m shaking them like a pair of glowsticks.
