I’ve been meaning to do this show for quite some time now but I was so wrapped up and watching and not commenting on it because it was just that good! But here I am now talking about it and that’s all that matters. Thou this series so far only has 1 season with 9 episode it’s pretty fucking incredible and the cast and crew outdid themselves HANDS DOWN. If you can get there—if you can basically spend your teenage years not wanking too much and your 20s not fucking too much—you get to marriage and everything will be cool. And that’s just totally not my experience. The reason I think people don’t stay married is because they don’t realize how much work it takes.” But why an Academy Award, I asked? “We had a tattoo bet in COVID,” Mumford said. Mulligan’s last film, Promising Young Woman, was supposed to come out in early 2020. But the film’s release date was postponed on account of the pandemic. “So they just kept doing press,” Mumford said, “but it kept getting pushed, and the more press she did, more people saw it, were like, ‘This is fucking dope, this might get nominated for an Oscar.’ ” So they were stuck at home, on Zoom every day. “And I said, ‘Look, let’s just make this interesting. At this point, if you don’t get nominated for an Oscar, you have to be punished. You have to get an Oscar tattoo.’ And so the agreement was if she did get nominated, then I would get the Oscar tattoo. And she did get nominated. And I got myself an Oscar, which I’m thrilled with.”

A Set-Up Date

So, there you were. In a cab, in a nice dress, driving to Carey’s house for… well… a blind date. Your best friend had set you up with someone you don’t know – never in a million years, you would have ever expected something like this to happen. She watched your past relationships breaking and destroying not only themselves but also you. You’ve had gone through more heartbreaks than any human being should ever have to go through, that’s why she decided that she finally wanted to help you, and with a bit of convincing, you essentially agreed and let her do her ‘magic’, as she liked to call it.

--- Flashback: Two Weeks Earlier ---

You were sitting on Carey’s couch, enjoying a nice bottle of already half empty white wine. You had just escaped from the probably worst date in dating history “I don’t know Carey. I think I should take a break from trying to date.” Sitting sideways on the couch, with your right arm placed on the back of the sofa to support your head, you looked into the empty wine glass. Carey reached over to the coffee table to grab the bottle and refilled the glass in your hands “Oh no, I’m not gonna let you morn like that.” She put it back and looked deeply into your eyes “Let me help you. I met someone who I’m more than just one-hundred percent sure, he’s perfect for you.” “Don’t get me wrong, but that’s kinda hard to believe”, you admitted, but she didn’t let go “No, trust me. I just need your permission to ask him. He’s looking for someone as well.” To be completely honest, Carey wasn’t entirely sure, if Jake was looking for someone at that moment, but she had mentioned you a few times before during conversations and he just was perfect for you – she was convinced of that. You smiled slightly and nodded “Alright, BUT, if anything goes wrong, I won’t talk to you for three months.” Carey tilted her head looking at you “Yeah, right, as if you’d be able to do that.” And the both of you started laughing out loud.

--- End Of The First Flashback, But Start Of The Talk Between Carey and Jake ---

It was a small party for the cast and crew of ‘Wildlife’ for wrapping up the movie, when Carey decided on asking Jake out on a date, for you. She sighted the actor standing alone, leaning on a round high-table. When she walked up to him, she glided her arm over the surface, looking sweetly at the blue-eyed man “Jaaaaake”, she extended his name. “Yeees, Caaareyyy”, he imitated her. “I have a question”, she started, but corrected herself, “well-no, actually… a proposal? A request?” It all sounded like a question. “Are you sure? You don’t sound like it?” He asked carefully joking. The actress gathered herself quickly “Yes, I am sure, sorry. So… I have a friend.” Jake looked at her with his left eyebrow raised, already kind of knowing where this was going to lead to “And she’s really sweet and beautiful, and kind, and loving, and intelligent-“, the actor cut her off smilingly “And why are you telling me this?” She smiled at him “Because I thought that you and she could meet. You know… maybe on a-“,”A date”, he finished her sentence, nodding his head, still smiling. “Yeah”, her grin got wider as she saw him thinking. After a comfortable silence of a minute, he looked up to her again “Why?” The smile didn’t leave his face. “Because I think that you and she would fit really well together.” “Why do you think I’m looking for someone? Do I look that desperate and broken?” Both started laughing. “No! I just thought since you’re single and, oh gosh, I don’t know…”, Carey placed her elbows on the table with the head in her hands – she was starting to regret this ask. She waited for a bit and was about to excuse herself “Alright, I’ll do it”, Jake finally agreed. The woman’s head shot up, her face showing nothing else but excitement “Oh my gosh, really?! Are you serious?” He nodded, making her run around the table into his arms to hug him “Thank you, thank you, thank you”, they separated, and she continued “You won’t regret this. I promise.” She started walking backward “I’ll text you everything, alright? Thanks again!”, her voice echoed over the mass of people. The actor gave her two thumbs up, really hoping he won’t regret this, but actually trusting his co-star.

Your heart was beating faster than it ever has had, your hands were even starting to shake ‘Calm down (Y/N), everything’s going to be fine. Carey won’t set you up with someone horrible, so calm the heck down’, your inner self demanded. With all the anxiety boiling up inside of you, you didn’t even realize that you were already at her place. You paid the driver and opened the car door. Before approaching the front door, you took one big breath, trying to somehow get your heartbeat regular again – it didn’t really work. You knocked on the door and waited as you heard quick footsteps rushing downstairs. Suddenly, the door got ripped open and you got pulled inside. As soon as you were in the comfort of Carey and Marcus’ house, your best friend held you by your upper arms “Let me take a look at you”, she took two steps back “Babes, you look fine as heck if Jake doesn-“, you didn’t let her finish her sentence “Jake?” Carey looked at you wide-eyed “Ehm…” Your date partner was supposed to stay a secret, so you don’t get your nerves up too much and were surprised when you met him, but the actress herself had just realized that she had messed up. “What Jake?” “Yeeeah… I wanted your date to be a surprise”, she started not being able to stand completely still. “So, what Jake? What’s he like? What’s his last name?” You immediately started bombarding her with questions, but her husband who had just come downstairs and hadn’t heard your entire conversation decided to answer for his wife… or actually ask her something as well “Gyllenhaal! You only told her just now? How are you (Y/N)?”

You weren’t able to move, not even blink – the shock was too deep. As soon as the last name of your blind date left Marcus’ mouth, the world around you stopped for a second. After getting back into real time, you turned to Carey and gave her a look of disbelieve “Gyllenhaal? J-Jake… Gyllenhaal? Are you freaking kidding me?!” Anger rang through your voice, even though you didn’t want to – it was all just anxiety but came out as anger. “(Y/N), look, trust me. He’s great, you’ll love him, he’s perfect”, she tried calming you down as she went to pet your arm, but you back away. “But Carey, Jake freaking Gyllenhaal!! The actor Jake Gyllenhaal! Have you looked at him and then at me? We are completely different people!” “No, you’re not! Believe me, please… You’ll see. You’re so much alike, you’ll get on perfectly fine.” You avoided her gaze and noticed Marcus leaving the current situation in the hallway. “I…”, you tried starting a sentence, but couldn’t. She came up to you and rubbed you comfortably over the shoulders and arms “It’ll be perfect, please believe me”, she begged you. She looked at you with puppy eyes and you gave in, mostly though because you just didn’t want to fight “OK. Repeating”, you pointed a finger at her “If anything goes wrong, no talking to each other for three months.” To which she just rolled her eyes. “Let’s get you something to drink”, Carey made her way to the kitchen with you behind her.

As you were drinking your cup of tea, the actress started telling you a little bit about your date “He doesn’t really like to talk about his work a lot. He loves talking about his family though.” You nodded at her statement “I’m sure he’s great-“,”He’s perfect, you’ll see.” As she was about to continue with her adoration for the American/Swedish actor, the doorbell made a sound. “Oh, I think that’s him”, she took a look at the hanging clock in the kitchen, “Perfectly on time.” Carey stood up and walked back into the hallway, you quickly gave the clock a short look – 7:30 p.m. – ‘Wow, he really is on time’. You quickly followed the actress but stayed out of sight as she opened the door.

“Hello, handsome young man. Who are you here for?” She joked, letting him come in. “Well, if only I knew”, he looked around the room, until his eyes fixed on you. Carey ran up to your side, put her left hand on your lower back and slightly shoved you into his direction “So, (Y/N) Jake, Jake (Y/N)”, she introduced you to each other. The blue-eyed actor extended his right hand, which you gladly took “Very nice to meet you (Y/N)”, he greeted you. “Pleasure is mine.” You answered, but immediately regretted it and your inner voice decided to comment ‘Pleasure is mine? Are you kidding me, where are we? Downtown Abbey?’ You could have face-planted the floor right there, at that exact moment. “Well, kids, I think you should be going”, Carey’s voice rang through your ears as you just noticed that Jake and you were looking at each other for far too long. She shooed you out the door “Have fun kids”, and was about to close the door, when she stuck her head through the little gap “But not too much!” And with that, she shut the front door and left you a blushing mess, and Jake laughing while looking at the floor embarrassed. “I’m so sorry about her”, you apologized for your best friend as you were making your way to his car. “Don’t worry, I’ve worked with her for four months, I got to know her quite well”, he gave you his one-million-dollar smile. As you reached the vehicle, he, being the gentleman you expected him to be, grabbed the door handle of the passenger side and opened it for you. “Thank you”, your quiet voice spoke to which he just nodded and smiled. He jogged around the car, before placing himself on the driver’s seat. “I thought, we could do something simple and be really cliché with a dinner?” He sounded a bit unsure, but you loved the idea of sitting at a table with him. “I’d love to, great idea”, you gave him an assuring smile, making a stone fall from his heart and he was finally able to breathe normally again.

During your drive to the restaurant, you got to know each other a lot better. He told you a little bit about himself and you told him about yourself. You found out that he loves his family and has a lot of respect for the women in his life, which let’s be all honest made you love him even more. You told him about your dream job and what you would wish for your future. The conversation soon ended as you reached your destination. Looking outside of the window, you came to sight with a really lovely looking old rustic restaurant. Fairy lights were decorating the entrance and a long way with stones was lighted up by little lanterns on each side.

From this moment on, I would highly recommend listening to this playlist: Call Me By Your Name, I listened to it and imagined the restaurant playing those songs or if this were a movie and you’d only be able to see these scenes with the music on top. So, just a recommendation because I think it’s so beautiful 😊 (I’m sorry, I’m just a sucker for cute things like that 😊 But in general, this playlist is one of the most beautiful things I have ever listened to)

“Wait a second”, Jake stated before getting out of the car, running around the car only to open your door again, extending his hand for you to take and he helped you out of the vehicle. You just gave him a sweet smile, in a bit of a trance of how gentle and sweet he had been so far – a better start than any of your other dates had ever had. He put his arm in an angle for you to link yours with his, which you obviously did. You walked further towards the entrance of the restaurant and were able to see all the small details of decoration the building had. Flowers lined up on the side as well as hanging on the walls inside little wooden pots. The door was open for everyone to enter and exit and wide enough for two people to walk in at once. The two of you walked inside and got hit with a mixed smell of roses and freshly baked bread. Jake guided you to the waiter right at the front “Hello, I booked a table under Gyllenhaal”, he kindly greeted the man in a button-up shirt with a tie. The waiter flicked through a leather book filled with all reservations “Right”, he looked up at you, smiled and led you further “This way.” The restaurant was silently playing slow songs you would have been able to dance to. You got led back outside, but this time to the back of the restaurant, where they had an outside area to sit.

On the right side, they even had a bar. The canopy was made out of wood bars. Plants and flowers of all kind were adorning the walls, as well as fairy lights - them and candles on each table being the only light source. You noticed how really not many people where there and thought, you were really going to enjoy this date. As soon as you reached your table, the man left the two of you and Jake was right behind one of the chairs, pushed it back and waited for you to take a seat. You thanked him again and quickly, he was in front of you, sitting on the other chair. “I hope this is OK. I didn’t know what kind of restaurants you’d like, but I thought this was quite cozy”, he sounded very unsure, but you really didn’t want him to. “No, it’s absolutely perfect. It kinda looks like a restaurant from a fairy tale”, you admired the outside, looking around with wide eyes. “Yeah”, Jake chuckled, looking at you with loving eyes at how adorable your looks were wondering around the room. He handed you the card “How about we start with some wine? White?” The actor asked you. “Yeah, white sounds good”, you gave him another kind smile. ‘He likes white wine, just like you – he’s a good one.’ Your inner voice made itself noticeable again. The moment the waiter came back to take your orders for food, Jake asked him for a bottle of white wine. Right after, you told him your order for a meal, blue-eyes in front of you followed you a different meal. The moment you were alone again, Jake started to slightly lean on the table and looked at you, which you copied with a smile. “So, tell me how you and Carey met”, he started another conversation. You steadied your right elbow on the surface and put your chin in your hand “We met through her husband Marcus. He’s friends with my brother, they were in a band together when he spent three years in England. When Marcus flew over to America to meet up with him, he took Carey with him and when the two men were together, Carey and I would spend some time together… and that’s kind of how we became best friends.” The entire time, he looked interestingly at you. “And how was she on set?” You wondered. He leaned back in his chair and started “I don’t think much different from how you know her. She really is one of the best co-stars I’ve ever had. I remember on the first day”, he started laughing, thinking about the memory “Right at the first scene we had together, she tripped and messed up some of her lines and she was worried, she was going to get fired.”

“Yeah, she worries quite a lot.” To which he nodded. Two waiters came back, one carrying your food, the other one held the bottle of white wine and two glasses. They adjusted the table to set everything up perfectly.

Way too quickly, the both of you finished your meals and were only talking. “Where do you think, you’ll be in… let’s say… ten years?” Jake asked unexpectedly, catching you off guard with his question.

“Oh… ehm…”, you thought your answer through “Hopefully married. I’d really like to have kids-“, “How many?”, he wondered. “In ten years… maybe two. I think that’s a possible goal to achieve”, your statement made him laugh, showing you his perfectly straight and white teeth. “And, I would still like to work at my current job, I just love it way too much to leave it behind so soon. But I hope to be traveling more, or that I will at least have traveled more than now”, you paused for a second and took a sip of your wine before continuing “And you?” “I hope I have kids at that point, that’d be a bit sad if not. I’m not sure about acting though, maybe not so much in movies anymore, but more on stage, theatre.” You got a bit nosey and confident “What about marriage?” He gave you a smile while answering “Definitely. I want to have a steady relationship before having kids.” Your conversation kept on for a while before you decide to ask for the bill and leave. After a lot of back and forth, Jake paid for the meal, with a lot of objections from you.

The drive to your apartment was spent with a pleasant chat about a lot of random subjects and making each other laugh. You directed him to the building and were sad as soon as you reached it. Once more, he told you to wait and jogged around the front of the car to be gentleman-like one last time for the night and help you out. Jake walked you to the porch of the building and looked directly into your eyes. “I’m really thankful, Carey told me about you”, he admitted with his hands in his pockets. You looked onto the floor smilingly “Yeah, me too. Thank you for tonight”, you looked back up to him, “I really enjoyed it.” “I did too.” A silence overcame the two of you. A passionate look was shared. Jake thought his next move really well through but couldn’t hold himself back and started to lean it. A millimeter before your lips met, he stopped “I really normally don’t do this on the first date, but-“, you interrupted him “I don’t mind.” And with your consent, he leaned in a bit more and your lips met gently. His hands wandered to your hips, making sure not to place them to low. You placed your hands softly on the sides of his face. Your lips moved in sync gently, scared to go too far. It was a soft kiss, filled with love and a bit of insecurity, which disappeared within the first ten seconds. Y separated. He took a strand of your hair and placed it behind your left ear. A grin started spreading on the lips of the two of you.

Nothing could have prepared you for the long journey of love, passion, and trust you were about to start…
