The city of Justice, Illinois is home to one of Chicago's oldest and most mysterious ghost stories; Resurrection Mary. The paranormal stories and sightings of Resurrection Mary began in the 1930's and continued into the 1980's. The ghost has been seen walking along the side of Archer Avenue by Resurrection Cemetery. There are also reported cases of the life-like ghost hitching rides before vanishing. No one knows the true identity of the ghost, but in this video, I showcase two Mary's who many believe are the best candidates. I also cover all of the scary ghost stories, starting with the first known encounter in 1939. The video also includes footage of Archer Avenue and Resurrection Cemetery.

Resurrection Mary

Just outside of Chicago, Archer Avenue leads motorists past Resurrection Cemetery, the final resting spot of a young woman killed in the 1930s. Many believe the same young woman mysteriously returns to the cemetery night after night, dancing and hitchhiking her way back down the avenue. Of all of Chicago’s ghost stories, this one has been told and retold for over 80 years.
Resurrection Mary, as she is called, was reportedly first sighted in 1939, when a man named Jerry Palus met a beautiful young blonde woman in a white dress at a local dance hall. After dancing together all night, Jerry offered the beautiful stranger a ride home. She directed him down Archer Avenue, stopping in front of Resurrection Cemetery, where she vanished before reaching the front gates...

Tell them I was born here, south side of Chicago, lived here my whole life, will die here if given half a chance. And is there a chance? Hey, daddy, do you wanna dance? Let’s cut a rug, let’s jitterbug. They put dollars in the jukebox.
We begin the Beguine. Now we’re singin ’with a swing, but here’s something you should know—

Episode 114: The Francis Leavy Handprint Photodump
Image 01: Firefighters amid the rubble of the collapsed Curran Hall, which killed Francis Leavy. (1904, Chicago Daily News) Image 02: Francis’s ghostly handprint was still unable to be removed when this photo was taken 15 years later.(Chicago Daily Times, 1939) Image 03: Portrait of Francis Leavy.(Chicago Fire Department) Image 04: Francis’s Badge at the Fire Training Academy. The academy has a badge (or replica) of nearly every fallen firefighter. Image 05: Francis “Frank” Leavy Memorial Brick. (Chicago Fallen Firefighter/Paramedic Memorial Park) Image 06: A ghostly woman known as “Resurrection Mary” reportedly burned her handprints into the wrought iron fence around the Resurrection Cemetery in August of 1976. Image 07: The Museum of the Holy Souls in Purgatory is a small century-old display of items said to have been burned by souls trapped in purgatory. According to tradition, family members must pray for souls in purgatory so that they can atone for their sins and pass on to heaven. The museum is located in the back of a church, which is the most hardcore church a thing could do. Image 08: Stains on a wooden table left by deceased Fr. Panzini on November 31, 1731. Image 09: Handprint of deceased Joseph Schitz when he touched his brother’s prayer book December 21, 1838. Image 10: Joseph Leleux was haunted by strange noises for 11 nights in 1979. On June 21, 1789, the ghost of Joseph’s mother appeared and told Joseph that he was obligated to have Masses celebrated for her and her ghostly husband. The ghost placed her hand on Joseph’s nightshirt, leaving a burned handprint. This interaction prompted the unreligious Joseph to convert and create his own congregation. WHAT?! au I’d love to see: what if John was killed in the nursery fire that night? Mary never wanted to raise her children as hunters, but she’d have known exactly what it meant. She’d have figured out that Sam was the target and is “special” to the demons. She probably would have made the connection to the deal she made. She would have seen that ignoring the supernatural couldn’t stop it from killing her husband and destroying the life she’d built. How long before she starting thinking, maybe these boys should know a little something? Be able to take care of themselves? Be prepared for the worst? Before she starts reaching out to old family friends who know what goes bump in the night because there’s value in having a network that can help protect her kids? What kind of hunters do Dean and Sam grow up to be?

“The Dollhouse” — a dialogue poem between Chuck and Metatron, for today’s prompt of the same name!
this poem was inspired by a good handful of other things, namely Supernatural 11x20 "Don't Call Me Shurley", "A Doll's House" by Henrik Ibsen, "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo, and a philosophical dialogue between Socrates and one of his students, Euthyphro :)
