- Even though I have already said it many times I will repeat it forever, I really like her ability to insert small details into her stories and continue to use them throughout the rest of the story. I also love the care she takes in describing scenes that apparently seem normal and yet she manages to transform them into wonderful ones by adding small actions or gestures that make them unique. Without forgetting her skill in characterizing the characters, who are written so well that you fall in love with them from the first words and the precision she puts into writing about Bradley, differently depending on the series but always in a way that is impossible do not fall in love with him. I literally love her entire masterlist, Is It Working For You and the entire Bradley and BG universe was the first series I read by her and it has a special place in my heart, I love reading it and rereading it. She is truly amazing!

- I've said it plenty of times about her too, but her skill in transporting the reader precisely to the place where the story is taking place always leaves me speechless. The precision with which she takes care of every detail of the environment is truly special and fascinates me every time. Si Vis Amari Ama is the series thanks to which I discovered her blog and I am madly in love with it. One thing I really appreciate about this series is the fact that she included phrases or words in Latin, this once again confirms the passion and care that she put into her works. As well as it is written, every time I'm in Rome I feel like I've been catapulted into the series! I also find her talent in making the relationships between characters real and her artistic sense when she makes mood boards incredible.

- The first series of her that I read was Remember you even when I don't and I read it in one go because it had captivated me from the beginning. Her ability to write and make you feel the emotions of the characters is fantastic. I love how in her stories it's like riding a roller coaster for everything you feel and I love even more how in many of her stories she talks and underlines how certain loves never end, no matter what they have to face, they often go through immense turns and then return. This love came back to me is the perfect proof, which made me shed more than one tear and which I loved immensely.

- I madly loved her series The boyfriend experience, the slow burn that occurred between the characters, how they understood that they had feelings for each other and how they let themselves go and got together. I love how she can write about happy feelings as well as sadder feelings. With Slow Dancing in a Burning Room my heart is strained with every chapter, but I can't help but read the series because of how well it is written and how real the situations and conversations between the various characters are.

- I recently discovered her Honey and Jake universe and fell in love with it after reading the first few lines. I love her ability to create stories not only by writing them beautifully but also by building the entire outline. With the presentation of the various main characters, inserting photos of them as she imagined them, writing their background and their nicknames. Not to mention the various mood boards that she creates and the various digital Daggers that always manage to make me smile and are so carefully done.

snippet of that lilene fic i started writing last night (it is heavily inspired by the film, crush):

Marlene came out of the toilets, bag slung over her shoulders, and grabbed James' sleeve, ignoring the other two as she started to pull him down the corridor.

"I'll see you both later!" He waved, that grin still there. 

Remus patted Lily's head, sympathetically, "You really need to get over this crush?"

Lily frowned, "Look at him! I can't simply get over a crush, especially when the crush in question is looking at me like that!"

"Then make a move", Remus shrugged. 

"I can't, that's absolutely terrifying. No thank you."

"So you're choosing to pine forever?"

"Who would I even move on with?" 

Remus was suddenly pushed against the wall, hands gripping him by the waist as they held him in place.

"Hi", Sirius spoke.

Remus' hands instantly gripped the back of Sirius' head, fingers threading through his hair and pulling their faces together.

They started to snog, Lily leaning against the wall beside them and with a sigh, she pulled out her phone. 

"Sea.of.Stars just posted. I think they graffitied the wall by the bike rack; they did this little cartoon doodle of a snake riding a bike, but its tail is stuck in the wheel… That's kinda sad. It's well done though."

Remus turned his head to the side, glancing at her, as Sirius started to kiss his neck, "You should date Sea of Stars."

"No one knows who they are."

Sirius kissed Remus once more before turning to Lily, "There's a rumour it's Dorcas Meadowes. Because they graffiti their skateboard." 

Lily tilted her head in contemplation, "Dorcas is very hot. I don't think we have much in common, though."

"And what exactly do you have in common with James?"

Lily folded her arms, "And what do you and Sirius have in common?"

Remus turned to his boyfriend, "We're both extremely dynamic. And ardency is undeniably attractive."

Sirius laughed, "We're also both immensely hot. Si vis amari Ama."

"You're so enthralling when you speak Latin", Remus hummed, before kissing Sirius again.

(A Very Brief Introduction to the Estonian Language, snippet 2)

Estonian is said to be a “transitional form from an agglutinating to an inflected language”, an opinion most of us would find hard to argue with, but not very helpful either. Without going into too much detail and embarrassing myself, what it essentially boils down to is that it piles dozens of different endings (usually one at a time, thank God) onto the root of the word, and, in case that’s too easy, changes the root spelling. In English, for example, a river’s a river. OK, you take on an “s” if there’s lots of them but that’s about it, although one or two verbs are, admittedly, a bit iffy, with speak, spake, spook, as Hyman Kaplan would have said, but Estonian? It’s on viagra... Take a look at this:

Nominative - jõgi - river

Genitive - jõe - of the/a river

Partitive - jõge - e.g. pumping the/a river*

Illative - jõesse - into the/a river

Inessive - jões - in the/a river

Elative - jõest - from, out of the/a river

Allative - jõele - to the/a river

Adessive - jõel - upon, on the/a river

Ablative - jõelt - from, off the/a river

Translative - jõeks - for, as the/a river

Essive - jõena - as the/a river

Terminative - jõeni - up to, until the/a river

Abessive - jõeta - without the/a river

Comitative - jõega - with the/a river

* Partitive singular also used for number of things, so two rivers would be kaks jõge... (see below)

... which raises various points: this is the singular so multiply by two; no difference between “the” and “a”; adjectives only follow suit until the translative, after which they throw up their hands in despair and go genitive (which does actually simplify things); various forms get shortened (e.g. illative jõesse to jõkke, a real ink saver that one); the inessive plural probably has two forms and on-one even mentions the instructive (or the prolative), then there’s the exceptions, the maybes, the sort-ofs, and the ones that no-one’s quite sure about. Rumor has it that Estonia has a 24/7 helpline for natives worried about their declining capabilities... Anyone remember German or Latin with its pathetic little band of conjugations and declensions (der, die, das, amo, amas, amat)? Estonian has 600 of the buggers.

15. How do you come up with titles for your fics/chapters?

for titles: i am a sucker for using song lyrics (especially fall out boy ones lol), so a lot of them come from songs that i think fit the fic/vibe well!! and i go to great lengths to find the right lyrics. for example, i knew i wanted my fic what a match: i'm half-doomed and you're semi-sweet to have a fall out boy title because it had such pining loserboy qualities that i thought only a fob lyric would suffice. i literally went through each of their albums and looked through the lyrics of each song until i found that line from the disloyal order of water buffaloes that became the title :D

but sometimes, i try to be original and come up with titles on my own lol. i think my favorites of those have been drowning on rooftops, which i came up with like right before i posted, and beneath these boughs, my devotion blooms, which i don't recall how i came up with title, but i know i really really like it :)

and then there's si vis amari, ama, which is a quote from Seneca in the original Latin 🙃

for chapters: i actually only have six fics with actual chapter titles, so i can just give my reasonings for each one lol

Maybe it's Called Growing Up: all the titles come from TXT song lyrics! each chapter was a byler scene based off of a TXT song :3

To Hell and Back Again: ok the chapter titles for this one are super lame because i just named them after an important symbol/aspect/object in each chapter. like there's literally one chapter that's just called "bike" :)

the truth beneath the rose: i basically am doing what i did in thaba but am making things more descriptive and pretty sounding :D so instead of it just being like "wine" it's "wine in bottles, wine on tongues"

come to me again (in the cold, cold night): all three of the chapter titles are taken from this scene from buffy the vampire slayer, which is one of my all-time favorite Spike scenes. it's when he reveals to Buffy that he's won his soul back, but he speaks in these really broken and poetic lines that i love. AND THEN IT ENDS WITH HIM DRAPING HIMSELF ON A CROSS??? hell yeah 😎

sweetheart, you're so cruel: so the chapters on ao3 don't technically have titles, but each one has a heading designating it as Side A, Side B, etc like records! and then each side is divided into subsections with headings taken from classic rock lyrics :D

usually in the middle/towards the end! i rarely have a title planned out before i start something, and the title usually gets changed multiple times before it gets posted heheh

Emmeline: As for my almost marriage...Radbod is...he's a good priest and he treats me kindly. Better women than I have had worse husbands. You see that a lot in my profession. Bad husbands. Theobald: Oh, er, Brother Maldwyn...we became acquainted at the monastery. He was...my student. He was twenty-seven when I met him! I was thirty. He didn't know Latin, so I had to teach him. Foresooth, I love my Maldy, natheless the man was an absolute lunatic in his youthful days. At the time he didn't comprehend why his attempted seduction was problematic. We have Latin Grammys (Vegas) on 18th and AMAs (LA) on 21st this week so that might explain. When will this show end? What kind of promo this guy needs that he didn’t get it already? Guess he is not so close to Taylor Swift or we would have seen bring baby C to NY just like Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner, Cara DeLavigne and others that have attended. From a marketing point this should be the best time to have the breakup since both have no big projects to promote. Yeah the tour, but he has a big fandom and will sell regardless. She has Familia to release, but she’s not getting any promo anyway.

We know Lauren will be in NY this week (20) for her Mini-Tour and then Chicago (22), Miami (23), LA (29 and 1 and San Francisco (02). I’m just pointing this because is actually funny that circus stuff almost always happens when Lauren is also working. I’m actually curious about the girls next steps now that Lauren is “all” independent.

One more thing: L said in an interview she’s buying a house with a backyard in Miami while a certain someone is selling her LA one. I don’t have to say what crossed my mind with that info, right? Also, if C is moving back to Miami to stay definitely, which is not confirmed, could this mean she’s close to ending her contracts and starting milamoon era like Lauren?

hi!! i noticed that many tumblr accounts including you all believe that l and c are together still. i’m not sure i really believe that so what is prompting y’all to believe they are?? is there some sort of evidence i’m missing?? thanks :)

We know they were together at amas in October 2018. Other than that it's mostly indirects and Camila's lyrics, so you have to be a little bit more delusional, because we don't see them together anymore. 🤣

It's a little bit funny, but I didn't believe they where together either, but what convinced me were Camila's playlists. She created a love playlist at the beginning of 2018, repeating a lot of songs from 2015.

Also from the recent ones, Lauren sang Yellow on Camila's birthday in 2020.

And she went to Latin grammys "representing" Camila in November 2019.

Don't forget L is involved in Shawmila. Her starting to mention Camila again and promoting "Wonder" on her Instagram is all part of a bigger plan.

But there is no way to tell for sure, because we know what they want us to know. They still have their private lives

How (not) to say ‘fuck’ in Etruscan (and other things I cannot believe I spent so much time tracking down for a throwaway joke in a Witcher slash-fic)

Buried in chapter 4 of my fic Something Nice is a joke which, as much as it amused me, no-one else is going to get unless I explain it. So here we go.

For the last few people in this fandom who haven't heard yet: The Witcher 3's vampire-language is Etruscan. To my knowledge, there's never been an official statement from CDPR to confirm this, but the evidence (ie. that basically all the vampire vocab can be found in online Etruscan sources) seems pretty solid. To explain why this made me go oooooh that's so NEAT, we need a little context.

Context!

The Etruscans (in my admittedly far-from-expert understanding) were a people who lived in Italy back before the Romans got around to conquering-slash-assimilating the rest of the peninsula, and the language they spoke is one of the most frustratingly mysterious of the ancient world. Most dead languages are at least related to something modern linguists have a decent handle on, but Etruscan seems to have been related to almost nothing else spoken – it may even have pre-Indo-European roots (a whoooole other tangent I am in no way qualified to cover).

Surprisingly, we do owe our modern Latin alphabet in part to the Etruscans, since the earliest Roman alphabets were adapted from the Etruscan (who got it from the Greeks, who got it from from the Phoneticians, and so on). The Etruscans may even be the reason we're stuck with so many weirdly redundant K-sounds (not only K and C, but X and Q, which are really just 'ks' and 'kw' with an overblown sense of superiority).

But being able to sound out every surplus K-word from an Etruscan inscription isn't much help nowadays when there are no surviving Etruscan dictionaries to tell us what it actually means – not even a decent Etruscan Rosetta stone to give us a push-start. So while modern linguists may rattle off Ancient Greek fluently or puzzle out Egyptian hieroglyphs from thousands of years before the Etruscans even had an alphabet, the Etruscan vocabulary available to us nowadays remains embarrassingly limited. Bits have been figured out from context or thanks to loanword exchanges with their neighbours (plenty of ancient Greeks and Romans certainly spoke Etruscan, even if they failed to write it down), but a lot is still as mysterious to the experts as it would be to you and me.

So why to I love the idea of using Etruscan as the Witcher’s vampire-language so much? Basically, if you want a language that will sound both old and reliably alien to anyone listening to it – be they the mainstream English-speaking market or the original Polish-language audience – Etruscan is a damn good call. You're not going to have much vocabulary to draw from, but it's not like there's a lot of vampire-chatter in the game anyway. It's a cool little easter egg for fans nerdy enough to try and figure out what they're saying.

Translations and Sources

You aren’t going to find a lot of great Etruscan language sources on the web – few of the easily-discovered online sources on Etruscan vocab appear to have been updated within the last ten years, and lord knows how consistent some of these are with current scholarship (let alone how sure linguists can be about anything with a task like this). All the same, have some links you may find useful:

Paleoglot.com’s Etruscan tag – Blog by an actual linguist who regularly discusses Etruscan material, and who even created their own translation applet! – which was, unfortunately, in flash, and is thus no longer usable. (There is a certain irony that even the tools available online to help you understand Etruscan are written in a language that is now no longer supported or understood by any modern browser.)

Not that translating what’s in the game is going to be easy, oh no. Take, for example, the oh-god-please-don't-kill-me ceremonial greeting Geralt has to offer to the Unseen Elder to survive that meeting – "Eclthi, lautni ama".

'Eclthi' is apparently a "demonstrative (locative)" (’here’, ‘there’, etc). "Lautni" is trickier – it means a freed slave, but may also imply a familial relationship or a client of sorts, while the root “lautn” apparently designates simply “possession.” House slaves in the ancient world were often considered part of the family, and freed slaves were an important class in many ancient cultures, who often maintained relationships with their former masters, so you can see the internal logic, but what sense was the Witcher using it in? It’s hard to know.

"Ama" is possibly worse – most translations seem to have taken it as "to be", but sometimes also “to love”, or even "now" or  "meanwhile." Then you hit the question of Etruscan grammar, and I have no idea where I’d even start. So, with a little creativity, you could probably translate that phrase as anything from "take this and consider me a friend" to "meanwhile, this is family" to "a demonstration of love from your slave." I mean, you've got the same general theme going there regardless, but there's a lot of ambiguity in the inflection.

For what it's worth, I feel garasham's translation efforts are easily the most convincing I've seen – they have the above line as “Here I am a slave / a friend / kindred” FWIW. (Mind you, given the wiki doesn't even try to do more than offer you one possible meaning for each word, there's not exactly much competition out there).

So, bringing this all back to that fic and how to say ‘fuck’ in Etruscan...

I've already gone to the web's Etruscan dictionaries once while I was writing Forget-Me-Not, seeking inspiration for a 'real' name for "the Queen of the Night" from the first Witcher game. Neither 'queen' or 'night' got me far, but the Etruscans did apparently have a goddess of the moon called 'Aritimi, Artume or Artames', which worked pretty well. If anything it's almost too close to the better-known Greek goddess Artimis, who was obviously a relative (ancient cultures bleed into each other even when they're not bleeding all over each other, nothing new there), but I'm not going to be picky.

However, being a) a giant nerd, who b) writes a lot of smut, and c) is no more mature deep down inside than the rest of us, I couldn't resist seeing if I could find some slightly more obscene vocabulary. Did the Etruscans have a word for, say, 'fuck'?

Alas, if they did (and I mean, they totally did, c'mon), the web wouldn't tell me about it. Nor could I find much else relating to sex or genitalia (male or female), or even a decent word for 'thrust'.

On the flipside, there were a couple of different terms meaning 'plough'. And anyone who's played – well, any of the games, but especially Witcher 2 – would probably realise exactly why that filled me with so much glee.

Speaking of which, here, have a picture which is in no way related:

The fact that the various Etruscan terms meaning ‘plough’ could also apparently be translated as things like “to worship“ or “to act through movement, including ritual acts,” or that an important mythological figure was “a prophetic child who sprang from a freshly plowed furrow” was in no way discouraging.

The word I ultimately picked was 'esari'. Admittedly, variations on the prefix ‘ar-’/‘ara-’/’aras’ were much more consistently attested to throughout the various online Etruscan dictionaries as ‘terms meaning plow’, but figuring out how to convert an Etruscan prefix into a satisfying word is officially where even my enthusiasm for all this nonsense gives out. Esari was, by comparison, already a much more solid-sounding term, so let’s go with that.

Why go to all this trouble anyway? Well, the honest answer is “entirely for my own amusement”, but the nominal excuse comes right back to “so I could give Regis and Geralt this little exchange during a sex scene.”

"Unless you have any particular objection," said Regis, moving to straddle Geralt's body, "I thought we might engage in some esari... hm, what was the equivalent term in your language again?" The vampire leaned in close to Geralt's ear as he made a show of remembering his answer, "Ah, yes—I thought I'd fuck you."

Then I saw that their hairstylist posted a story at the airport yesterday. You only found out about two hours before the rest of the world, but that was enough time for you to get to the airport and on the earliest plane to Brazil. Andrew was the only one that knew you were coming, but that was enough. He’d have a car waiting for you, he’d told you.

It might seem crazy to hop on a plane to Brazil just because your boyfriend was sick, but you knew it was so much more than that. It was the first time Shawn had ever canceled a show. And a show in Brazil nonetheless, these were the shows he didn’t get to do very often. These were the fans that had little to no opportunity to see him unless he came to their country. Fans in the states or Europe even, they’d go to upwards of ten shows in one tour if their hearts really desired to do so. But the Asia leg, Latin America, and South America leg of the tour, those were special. These were fans who had probably never seen Shawn before, and may never get that opportunity again. They’d plan months in advance to see him. And as much as knew the fans were looking forward to this night, you knew Shawn was too.

You also knew Shawn would be blaming himself. The fact alone that he hadn’t called you to tell you, told you he was devastated and angry with himself. Probably going through his past week, picking apart every little thing he’d done wrong that could have caused him to make it to this point today. He forgot to do vocal exercises one day, or didn’t drink enough juice another day, or he hadn’t had the proper sleep on the plane rides, or maybe he went a little to hard night one, or at the AMA’s. He’d blame every single little thing, except the one thing that was the actual cause of his illness.

95 shows. In 8 months.

It was a miracle he hadn’t had to cancel a show any sooner. You’d had concerns when he’d told you last year how long this tour was going to be, but he was nothing but thrilled to be touring the world again. You understood, it’s the artist’s dream. It’s what they live for. He was just ready to sing again. He was concerned about show design, setlists, tour details. You were always only concerned with him.

And that’s why you were flying to Brazil, no matter how crazy it sounded.

You landed in Brazil only a couple hours before the show would have happened.

Usually you try to stay off social media when it comes to concerns about Shawn, but the plane ride was long. You got bored, and finally caved and connected to the wifi. Videos of Shawn sitting in the back of the stadium visibly upset, were all over the internet. Fans were sending him well wishes, and if #GetWellSoonShawn wasn’t trending already, you’re sure it would be within the hour. And this was the exact reason you wanted to be there for him. He needed someone there to remind him to take care of himself. It would be okay for just a few hours to forget about the world and their expectations of him, and just put himself first.

The ride from the airport to the hotel where Shawn was staying wasn’t too long, and you knew you’d be seeing him soon. Despite the circumstances of your visit, you had missed Shawn since his last visit home, and you were excited to see your boy again. Andrew met you in the lobby of the hotel, where there are a good thousand screaming girls out front.

“Welcome to Brazil,” Andrew greets you with a the most sugary sweet voice you’ve ever heard from him.

“Hey Andrew.” You smile lightly at him as you both reach the front counter.

The lines around Andrew’s eyes are just a bit deeper today, and the bags are just a bit darker. He looks tired, understandably.

“How is he?” You say quietly as the woman across from you gets your keys prepared.

Andrew sighed, “A mess. But you know him well enough to know he would me.”

“It’s why I’m here.” You match Andrews sigh, a heaviness coming over you. Seeing Shawn broken is never easy, but it happens to even the happiest of people.

You grab the key to Shawn’s room from the woman at the counter, and Andrew shows you the way through the hotel. “We finally got him to leave the stadium about forty five minutes ago. So he’s in his room.”

You nod, “Thanks Andrew, we really appreciate you.”

The two of you separate as Andrew heads to his room and you enter Shawn’s room as quietly as possible. You could have knocked, sure, but Shawn is used to other people having access to his room for emergency reasons. You know he wouldn’t be too alarmed from the door opening. You prop your suitcase at the entrance and make your way into the room, finding Shawn propped up on his bed, looking out the window. He hadn’t even moved when the door opened.

“Hey bub,” you whisper as you gently ease yourself onto the edge of the bed.

Shawn’s body immediately shifted towards you. His eyes landed on you, and within seconds of making eye contact, he broke down in tears. “What are you doing here?” He stuttered out. You moved quickly to sit right next to him, thigh pressed against thigh. You take his cheeks in your hands and pull him towards you.

“I had to come see the most important person in my world.”

Shawn let out a light sob as you did your best to quiet him, not wanting to strain his voice.

“I messed up.” He choked out.

“No, no you didn’t, Shawn.” You run a hand through his curls tugging gently on one so he’d look at you. Through wet eyelashes, he looks up at you, and your heart breaks a million times over. There’s very few things in the world worse than the twisting that’s happening in your stomach right now. “Babe, you go sick because you’re working so much. It happens, people get sick and they call out of work all the time. The world goes on, and you heal, and the next day you come back stronger than before.”

“But,” Shawn hiccups, wiping his nose on his sleeve, “When a normal person calls in sick to work, they don’t,” he hiccups again, “Disappoint 80,000 people.”

“Shawn, your health is more important than someone’s happiness for two hours. If you don’t get well, you’d disappoint so many more people down the road. We have to take care of you.”

Shawn nods slowly, “I know.” He looks earnestly into your eyes, as his tears slowed. “I know it, I do. But how do you get over the feeling that you’ve got the weight of the world resting on your shoulders and one mess up could ruin it all?”

You smile gently. “Babe, the world doesn’t actually revolve around you.”

Shawn huffs, “I know that.” He pushes himself upright on the bed.

“Right, okay, then the world won’t stop just because of a canceled concert.”

“Why does my heart hurt so bad though?” His eyes are wide and glossy staring at you. He’s beautiful, even in sadness and dispair.

“Because you wanted to do better. But sometimes your body can’t keep up with what your heart wants. You wanted to sing to all your fans, and give them the best night of their lives, but your body can’t keep running on empty. You’ve got to stop to refuel.”

Shawn sighed, “I just want to forget about it. Forget about all the people I’m letting down.”

“Then forget it, let’s think about other things.”

Shawn nods, almost eagerly. “I want to hear about what’s going on at home.”

You lean down to gently place a loving kiss on Shawn’s lips. “Okay, but first, go shower, and I’ll order us some food.”

Shawn nods, leaning in to grab her neck and kiss you for a few short moments. “I really love you so much. Thank you for coming.”

“I’ll be here anytime you need me, Shawn.”
