PSA: Sieges Are Awesome
so I just watched ANOTHER TV show where the characters could have simply barricaded themselves inside a VERY cosy and defensible fortress instead of heading outside to get killed/maimed/captured by the baddies
I call this Television Abhors a Siege and it is EVERYWHERE and I hate it
I HATE IT
yes, I know the writers look at each other and say, well, if our characters retreat to their stronghold then how will we fulfill our Swords Go Clang quotient for this episode?
this is only because the writers lack both imagination and education
you see, I've been reading medieval military history in exhaustive detail now for 8 years and SIEGES ARE AWESOME, both tactically and dramatically!
tactically, sieges make sense, because there is no way to thwart an enemy and buy time like HIDING SAFELY BEHIND A STONE WALL. the only time you would not do this is when a) you have a realistic chance of pulling off a surprise attack (the TV characters are never smart enough to do this) AND b) there is no realistic hope of circumstances altering to favour you in the near future (the TV characters never consider this either).
also historically speaking, whenever people looked at each other and said "this siege has no realistic hope of success" they did not march out to throw themselves on the enemy's swords: they negotiated and usually with great success (the TV characters never consider this either). but let's say you're in one of the VAST MAJORITY of situations where a siege DOES make sense and only the most unhinged mental gymnastics would justify leaving your fortifications to fight (see: the majority of TV shows and movies that deal with this scenario)? does this mean that your characters must sit inside their walls twiddling their thumbs?
pfft don't be silly
sieges are totally dramatic!
it's not about LEAVING your fortifications to fight, it's about USING your fortifications to fight.
your baddies could try everything to get in and there might be fighting over a gate, a breach, or a tunnel/mine?
your characters might sally out under cover of night to destroy the enemy or their weapons?
one of your characters might escape the fortress in a desperate journey to find help?
your characters might turn out to have a traitor or saboteur in the group?
there might be injured people who need urgent attention, or supply shortages?
a FRICKING METEOR might fall out of the sky onto the heads of your enemies, sending them running and allowing you the opportunity to regain the initiative? (and if you think this couldn't possibly have happened, something very close to this literally happened at Antioch in 1098 during the First Crusade)
anyway this is just to say that I am begging you all to reconsider the dramatic potential of the noble siege. for one thing, it makes the characters look like total imbeciles if you ignore it. and for another, sieges are AWESOME. eta: I learned all this doing the study for WATCHERS OF OUTREMER, my historical fantasy epic of the medieval crusader states! Book 4, A CONSPIRACY OF PROPHETS, puts my own magical spin on the 1098 siege of Antioch ;)

Re-reading Twice Dead King, the character I was most struck by on a second viewing was Mentep. Now there’s a tragic figure. Simultaneously a mentor, an ally, an antagonist, someone so terribly understandable who I want to smack upside the head for being a lying liar who lies.
Ultimately, Mentep is a penitent. He has committed terrible acts (that we only get scant details of) and he wants to redeem himself. Thanks to his tampering with his own memories, he doesn't fully know what he is repenting for, which puts him in a bind. However, he knows that he played a role in creating the flayer curse/longing sickness, so he goes to a planet where a high concentration of them have gathered and works on his cure. He's respected, he's able to do his work with only occasional interruptions from the local angsty youth. Things are good-ish (until the armada shows up.)
Mentep and Oltyx have a weird relationship. Despite being his normal asshole-teenager self, Oltyx does respect Mentep more than most. Trusts Mentep enough to let the guy perform experimental brain surgery on him. Twice. And Mentep is able to be much more candid with Oltyx in return. He's one of the few consistently calling Oltyx out for his bullshit. On the surface, it is a standard mentor relationship, but what got me on a second reading is that there is hardly a single conversation Mentep has with Oltyx where he isn’t lying to and/or manipulating him.
It starts early with Yenekh. Mentep knows Yenekh has been suffering from the curse, he hasn’t told Oltyx, and when he finally has to tell him, he conveniently does so right before distracting everyone with the “oh btw, we’re all gonna die to a giant human armada” news. This is done with the best of intentions. Mentep wants to protect Yenekh (and Oltyx, in his way), so he delivers the news this way to get the bad news out of the way and then both of them on the same side. But it is the start of a pattern.
Which we get again when Mentep fails to mention a that Antikef is a flayer den ruled by a “We have Illuminor Szeras at home” Vizier, and boy does that end badly for Oltyx (see the last 60% of Ruin). Naturally, Mentep has a good explanation:
Tumblr media
But it is another lie, one that costs Oltyx dearly (put a pin in this, I am coming back to it.)
There's some little fibs and ommissions along the way as they go to Carnotite, but it all builds up to The Big Lie. The one that sends Oltyx spiraling and gets Mentep killed. Because you know what really helps with paranoia? Finding out your mentor and your best friend have been hiding a secret blood pit in your basement! Again, it makes sense why Mentep is lying about this! He has every reason to believe Oltyx would have rejected the flayed ones he and Yenekh were sheltering (he in fact does exactly this), and Mentep's entire goal is to cure the curse to atone for his role in its creation. However...
Tumblr media
I think Oltyx is correct to call Mentep out here (Oltyx is wrong about most things, but not this). Somewhere a long the way he became a means to an end for Mentep. Mentep was focused on The Curse and not the person in front of him who was cursed. He used Oltyx's friendship with Yenekh, his need to save his kingdom, his trust, his fears, all in service of admirable goals, but he was using Oltyx. Is it any wonder this is where it ended?
The lies were Mentep's undoing from the start. Remember the lie about Antikef? The one that led to all the events of Ruin? Yes, Oltyx and Djoseras did talk and avoid a civil war, but Oltyx also went through hell. He saw his home turned into an abbattoir, his father reduced to barely more than an animal. Oltyx was literally vivisected and almost consumed by his own dysphoria. And then committed regicide after leaving his brother behind to die. Antikef is where Oltyx truly learned that compassion was weakness and saw how horrific the flayer curse could become. So how was he ever going to accept the flayed ones as Mentep wanted him to? Oltyx experienced the comically perfect combination of traumas to ensure that would never happen, thanks in part to Mentep's manipulations.
I cannot stress enough that Mentep's individual lies all made sense at the time. May have even been the best option, at the time. But the consequences piled up, and even as he is dying he still refuses to give Oltyx even a scrap of the truth. That is the core of his tragedy for me. Well, that and this:
Tumblr media
He bases all of his manipulations on his understanding of people's psyche's, which are usually accurate, but it also traps them. It gives them no room to grow or surprise him or for outside factors to come in and intervene. Contrast this with Zultanekh, who is upfront to a fault. He gives Oltyx advice and resources, but what Oltyx does with those things is up to him. Even when he is screwing up royally, he's allowed to make those mistakes. Mentep causes ones of Oltyx's darkest hours (the secret blood pit), while Zultanekh lifts him out of another (the Blood Angel's attack). In the end, Zultanekh is the one who sees Oltyx's true growth and witnesses the birth of his kingdom. A birth that comes not from curing the curse but embracing it.
There was never a sickness to be fixed, which means Mentep never would have achieved his redemption because he was focused on the wrong things. Which does make his death and rebirth as Xott a bit of a reflection of Oltyx. He was too burdened in his first life, but in his second he (or at least a version of him) was able to witness the people he hurt reaching a place of peace.

“Trope” x3
For every “Trope” I get, I will post a TV trope for my muse.
Antares // Acid Attack
His usual measure when up against fully mechanical foes that do not need to be retrieved in a fixable state. Usually administered through the stinger using a specific injector tip that wont corrode easy.
Chirptune // Feathered Fiend
Chirptune can be this, if one were to become her enemy. Because she can also communicate with actual birds, she can also call forth small groups of these too.
Yellow Three // Fragile Speedster
Relatively that is. Compared to the other members of the mechanical squadron, Yellow Three is the least durable but also the fastest. He's still harder to damage than the average human though (still made of metal, after all).

Would anyone care for an unsolicited RimWorld tip?
Tumblr media
Less like a "tip" and more like "how I play". See, when you're playing a cannibal colony, you're gonna be butchering a lot of humans, and I mean like A LOT. 1000+ human meat from every raid. Double if it's winter time, when the bodies can be preserved for longer.
So as a human is butchered, their clothes come off from the process, when your storage system is filled up with shitty clothes you don't want and can't sell or give away at the moment, just toss them outside!
I usually leave out any clothing of awful-normal quality, as well as clothing of any quality that I Just Don't Like. Such as tribal clothing, shoes, and flophats.
My colonists can wear the normal quality clothing if they like, but I forbid them from wearing anything of awful or poor quality.
Best part is that when a caravan comes around, you can just sell off all this shit at once for a couple hundred silver, at most.

Tips & Tactics: Wizard’s spellbooks.
Not every wizard has to have a large, expensive tome to record spells in.
What if, since there is such a wide array of different wizards in the multiverse, we got to see an equally diverse range of ways to record spells?
Here are a few ideas:
Tattoos. A wizard could ink their spells known directly into their skin, making them very convenient to keep with them. This could have drawbacks, as a wizard may need to magically remove unused spells in order to provide room for newer ones.
Memorization. The wizard records spells using a complex mnemonic device. They prepare their spells each day by reciting the device pertaining to the spells they want for that day.
Cookbook. For the culinary-inclined Wizard, why not include your favorite recipes and spells in the same place? If you think about it, you can format spells almost exactly in the same way as recipes.
Ring. A simple ring, with illusory magical script floating around the band. The wizard can focus on a particular spell to summon it forth on the ring’s surface.
Scarf. An insanely long knit scarf, which the wizard spends a little time knitting each time they learn a new spell. With specially coded stitches and loops, the wizard can store their spells within the scarf.
Mirror or Spyglass. Instead of a spellbook, this wizard can use a mirror with different slots for special panes of glass. Each pane is watched with different magical knowledge, allowing the wizard to swap out and bring to the front the most relevant spells.
Undead vermin. Perfect for the Necromancer on the go, this spellbook consists of a small being preserved with magic, which recites spells whispered to it. Can take the form of a rat carried by the tail, a snake coiled around the arm, or even a goblin’s head on a chain.
Dragon’s Eye. Literally, a dragon’s eye gouged out and used to replace one of the Wizard’s eyes. Enchanted so the wizard can see an illusory display of their spells known.
Aberrant Visitor. The wizard has a strange symbiote from behind reality living in their body, which whispers arcane knowledge to them.
Origami. A delicate piece of paper that is very carefully folded. Can be unfolded into a large amount of variations, with spells written on each one.

White Hat SEO Techniques:

2. Black Hat SEO:

3. Gray Hat SEO:
Gray Hat Definition Between white hat and black hat techniques, lies SEO. These methods can be questionable and become black hat if search engine terms change, even if they are not completely against search engine standards.
Gray Hat SEO Techniques:

Conclusion:
Every SEO strategy has its own advantages and disadvantages, just like every hat has a distinctive style of its own. Before choose which SEO "hat" to wear, organizations must carefully assess their long-term objectives, risk tolerance, and ethical attitude.
Never forget that SEO is about more than just rankings. It involves creating a reliable, worthwhile internet presence that benefits your audience and endures over time. So, pick your hat carefully!
