This is intended to be a companion piece to The Wedding Ring. I missed the opportunity to celebrate its posting anniversary so I was (am?) targeting to post this on the anniversary of TWR's completion. I'll put the premise of the story below a break because it will contain TWR spoilers.

This is a companion piece from James' POV showing the progression of the ring. It picks up after Lily and James' conversation about faking an engagement, goes through the designing of it, the proposal, Lily's acceptance at the wedding, and then (likely) would end with a post-TWR scene that would be completely new.

I think it could be a lovely piece that people may enjoy but I'm just not sure. 🤷‍♀️

What exactly is The Engagement Ring, asked no one

"When you were three years old you were a terrible climber," Mia begins. "Anytime there were biscuits at stake you were fearless. I thought you'd kill me from the stress but then your father told me something that has stayed with me all these years." 

Mia settles on the edge of her bed, patting to the spot next to her; he has no choice but to abandon his search and join her, stomach twisted in the knot it has been in since speaking to Lily earlier. 

"He's good at that, you know, which is a trait you've inherited from him. You are fearless, he said, and if you lived that way all your life you would never turn from a challenge. You'd always work for what you want." 

The unmistakable fondness in the mirroring hazel adds more guilt to the concoction in his stomach.

"It was hard to stomach when you used this particular trait to steal from the liquor cabinet—yes, I know about that—but it has brought you so much success in your life, James. We are immeasurably proud."  She pushes the messy hair from his face in a way she hasn't since he was a child. "So you can imagine my disappointment to see you dissolve to jewelry thieving." 

He grimaces at her light laughter. "I can explain! But please don't tell dad or Sirius."
