Tod Browning on the set of West of Zanzibar (1928) with Lon Chaney and Lon in a publicity still. Tod was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and had 62 director credits from 1915 to 1939. His entry among my best 1,001 movies is Freaks. This is his second honorable mention, after Mark of the Vampire.
Tod's other notable credits include The Unholy Three, The Unknown, London After Midnight, Dracula (1931 with Bela Lugosi) and The Devil Doll.

Despite his embarrassment, Randall managed a smile to Emily, showing his attempt to be a good sport about the whole thing. He laughed along with his parents before trying to eat a little more (just to get something in his stomach; he still wasn’t terrifically hungry, on account of his nerves), June and Wilhelm returning to their own plates for a moment, enjoying the music and the chatter of the other spirits around them.
Eventually, Wilhelm spoke up again, stealing a cherry tomato from his wife’s plate (at which she gave him a sly but amused smile) as he said to Randall, “So, you met your ladylove at the haberdashery-Junie tells me you’re great with a needle and thread!”
Randall gave a curt, modest nod, at which his father smiled, saying, “Then that must your handiwork there, your wife’s veil-it’s beautiful.” “Th-Thank you,” the younger Pace smiled, a genuine one this time, adding, “I...I like to think of it as my masterpiece.”
“It must’ve made a beautiful wedding gift,” June beamed, eyes softening at the mention of the union, a sign of how she wished she could’ve been there to see it. “You seem like such a lovely girl, Emily, we’re delighted to meet you, and have you a part of our family.” “Yes, we are,” Wilhelm agreed, lifting his glass of water in a toast, saying, “To the both of you-Mianta!“

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #182
Brought to you by a marine biologist and a nod to yesterday's joke I guess...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
I'm not a fan of April 1st. TBH I avoided Tumblr for the most part yesterday, but I couldn't not-notice one of the running gags yesterday was about crabs. So, today, we'll cover another little crab boi - the Freshwater Crab!
Tumblr media
Here's another little friend who appeared for one event and then was never seen again. The Freshwater Crab was introduced in June of 2020 and, yeah, that's it. The nice thing about these event animals, though, at least from my perspective, is that *most* of them are named directly to species common name, so, like, I haven't had to do some extended sleuthing in quite some time. Heh - that all ended today.
There are about 1300 species under the umbrella term "freshwater crab" in Brachyura - the true crabs. They come from a bunch of different SuperFamilies, so it's speculated the move into freshwater habitats has happened multiple times over the true crab lineage. We actually covered another one when we spoke about the Vampire Crab who is closely related to today's crab - they both come from Family Sesarmidae. Just like that cutie, this one is also popular in the pet trade for its small size and bright, varied coloration. I do believe this is Perisesarma bidens, the Red-Clawed Crab!
Tumblr media
Picture from Fish Keeping Project.
Although it's called the Freshwater Crab, and it can live in freshwater, it is most at home in brackish water, which is much more salty than a river or pond, but not as much as the ocean. This is because these crabs' natural habitat are tropical mangrove swamps, which typically border the ocean. On a wider scale, these crabs are widespread through the Indo-Pacific region, from Zanzibar to Japan. These are semi-terrestrial, meaning they spend much more time on dry land than you'd expect. At low tide, these crabs can be found on the mangrove forest floor just chillin' and finding some grub to eat, which can be really anything they can get their claws into. Like, if it's not a predator, it's food. Which...can be problematic since they have been found to eat trash, too. Oof.
And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?

okay so it’s about time i talk about one of the oldest AUs i have because it’s a melverse au that’s really cool and it’s a shame i dont do more with it.
Modern Monster is the name of the AU and also the name of a magazine within the AU, which is the magazine that Wemberly, who is one of the main protagonists, works as a journalist for. the general gist of the plot is as follows:
unlike canon melverse, monsters are fully integrated into human society in this world and the spaces around them are more equipped for their needs. your species is now listed on your ID alongside other important information, among other changes.
of course, things aren’t perfect. humans and monsters have come a long way but there’s still some imbalance between who’s needs are met. the solutions in place for werewolves who turn uncontrollably are uncomfortable at best, and while blood drives for vampire blood banks are common, much less common are organ donors for the purpose of feeding ghouls. as the definition of “monster” becomes even broader, even less has been done to remedy the needs of those of much more obscure species, like aliens, giants, and imaginary folk.
enter Finnigan Ford, a revolutionary politician of his time. surprisingly few monsters have yet to break into politics around the world, so it’s even more remarkable that Governor Ford has managed not only this breakthrough, but also a positive reputation among both humans and monsters. truly, he could be the force of change the world direly needs… if not for the fact his ultimate goal is to bring about the apocalypse
Finn’s true name is Famine, and along side his brothers Duke (Death), Warren (War), and Percy (Pestilence), he was tasked by his father Aiwen to end the world in any way he can do that the earth may start anew. his political success is partially owed to the ease in which he can make rival politicians dissapear. eating someone leaves not much evidence, after all, and with the help of Duke (who happens to be the state coroner) it seems unlikely anyone could stop him
enter Wemberly, as she’s known to her friends. a journalist for Modern Monster magazine. in her dedicated efforts to secure an interview with the most talked about monster in the state, she uncovers some less inspiring things he’s done. it ends up falling on her. does she put her own life on the line and bring forward the crimes he’s committed, or does she play it safe and watch him rise to power through ill-gotten gains?
all the melverse characters you know exist within this AU with much different lives. barnabus is a wildly successful attourney still learning to cope in the modern world, the muse is a widely renowned but terribly lonely rock star, the seven deadly sins are all permanently locked away in isolation on each continent, zanzibar is a heavy weight monster wrestler pushing the boundaries of what’s fair, and so on and so forth.

some vague concepts for in9 episodes that i think would be cool:
a murder mystery inspired by cluedo (perfect for some very hammy comedy performances with steve as colonel mustard and reece as professor plum)
pirates???? (no further ideas with this one. i think i just want to see them in eyeliner and weilding swords....)
one of them is an unhinged professional cellist (basically i wanna see one of them being sexy and insane in a tux. maybe the Main cellist feels threatened by a new member of the orchestra because he’s a Better musician and it’s all jealousy, mind games, and murder)
enchanted relic found at a carboot sale (probably haunted or smth so it’s somehow different from tempting fate)
a photographer whose camera keeps picking up souls of the dead that become increasingly more disturbing in each picture
a light-hearted jeeves and wooster type thing?? could turn dark if they really wanted it to
some sort of fairytale retelling a la zanzibar & shakespare or the stakeout & vampire stories
a fucked up roadtrip
an unnerving critique on pyramid schemes and cults
middle class rival next door neighbours and their petty squabbles over fences and bins etc and their constant need to feel like they have to “keep up with the jones’”
just half an hour about a family that can’t stand each other playing monopoly or doing a pub quiz
two strangers, who are the complete opposite of one another, get trapped together in a lift
doomsday preppers taking shelter in their bunker
the lads playing judges in a beauty contest
a bloody musical episode!!!! please!!!

Joan Crawford and The Man of a Thousand Faces By Jessica Pickens
Tumblr media
Joan Crawford was one of Hollywood’s top stars, eventually winning an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1946. But she credited growing as an actress to an actor who has been forgotten by many: Lon Chaney. Dubbed “The Man of a Thousand Faces,” Chaney was known for transforming physically for many different roles, often donning makeup or costumes that were painful in order to get the right look. “He will do anything, and permit almost anything to be done to him, for the sake of his pictures,” said director and frequent collaborator Tod Browning.
Chaney transformed into Quasimodo for THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (’23), the acid-burned PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (’25), a sharp-toothed vampire in LONDON AFTER MIDNIGHT (‘27) and an armless circus worker in THE UNKNOWN (’27). It was the latter that Crawford, then early in her acting career, worked with Chaney in. “Mr. Chaney was known as a generous man to young actors. He certainly was to me,” Crawford is quoted as saying by biographer Charlotte Chandler.
In THE UNKNOWN, Chaney and Crawford are circus performers. Chaney is Alonzo the Armless, a knife thrower, and Crawford is Nanon, his assistant during the act and the daughter of the circus’s owner. Due to having been groped and harassed by men, Nanon does not want to be touched by men and has a fear of their arms and hands. Because of this, she feels safe around Alonzo but rebukes the advances of Malabar, the circus strongman, who is in love with her. However, Alonzo has a secret … he actually does have arms but is hiding from the police, so he transformed himself into an armless performer to change his identity. To keep Nanon, Alonzo takes drastic and horrifying measures.
Tumblr media
By 1927, Chaney was one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s top stars and Crawford was a “little contract player,” as she called herself. But as Chaney had done with other young actors — like Loretta Young — he helped Crawford and she cited him for the rest of her career as someone who influenced her career. “With him I became aware for the first time of the difference between standing in front of a camera and acting,” Crawford said. “Until then I had been conscious only of myself. Lon Chaney was my introduction to acting.”
When they first met, Crawford said Chaney greeted her like a long-lost daughter and treated her like she was the star of the picture. But once he had his costume and make-up on, he became that character. “He had such a friendly, charming manner, except when he was getting into costume and putting on his makeup,” Crawford told Chandler. “He did this in his dressing room for a couple of hours before we started shooting. Then, he became Alonzo. That is when you had to be careful.”
THE UNKNOWN was directed by Tod Browning, who was known for his eerie films with a seedy atmosphere, like WEST OF ZANZIBAR (’28) or FREAKS (’32). Working together several times, THE UNKNOWN is considered Chaney and Browning’s best collaboration … and also their most bizarre and unnerving, according to Chaney’s biographer Michael Bliss. With most of their films, the plot idea started with a situation or a character type. Then the script was built around that idea. In the case of THE UNKNOWN, it was starting with a scenario of an armless man.
Tumblr media
In many of his films, Browning’s depictions of people with disabilities are negative; often linked to crime or something horrific. THE UNKNOWN is no exception. In the film, Chaney’s Alonzo is pretending to be disabled to hide from the law for a crime he committed. Because he can be identified by a double thumb, he uses a corset and layered clothing to strap his arms to his body. Even while hiding out, he continues to commit crimes and murder. Alonzo also lusts for Nanon, and the young girl becomes an obsession. And while Nanon cares for Alonzo, she doesn’t consider him as a romantic partner.
As the armless man, Chaney’s character uses his feet for ordinary tasks, like smoking and strumming a guitar. Crawford said that Chaney had to learn how to hold a cigarette with his toes. Other actions were performed by a double. Paul Desmuke (or Dismuki) was a real-life armless circus performer who performed the knife throwing and other action in scenes.
Tod Browning tried to place his characters in believable surroundings, rather than putting his characters in supernatural or storybook settings, like Frankenstein’s monster or the Mummy. “The thing you have to be most careful of in a mystery story is not let it verge on the comic. If a thing is too gruesome and too horrible, it gets beyond the limits of the average imagination the audience laughs. It may sound incongruous, but mystery must be plausible,” Browning said.
Tumblr media
The film was met with favorable reviews, but also astonished audiences and reviewers. “It is gruesome and at times shocking, and the principal character deteriorates from a more or less sympathetic individual to an arch-fiend,” said the June 13, 1927, review in the New York Times. The New York Times also compared the story to a mixture of “Balzac and Guy de Maupassant with a faint suggestion of O. Henry plus Mr. Browning's colorful side-show background.”
Even 93 years after its release, THE UNKNOWN confuses and shocks audiences. Many continue to call it one of the strangest film plots, according to the Museum of Moving Image. Even the British Film Institute calls the film “Out-there stuff.” Rest assured, at one point in the film your jaw will drop during THE UNKNOWN. And oddly mixed into this sadist tale, is the story of the budding career of Joan Crawford.

Image: A perturbed young woman fast asleep with an incubus sitting on her chest, symbolizing a suffocating nightmare with paralysis. Engraving by J.P. Simon ~ 1810 Wellcome Library London
Derived from Late Latin incubo ("a nightmare induced by such a demon"), from incubare ("to lie upon"), this weird figure and its variations, that are often said to be responsible for unwanted pregnancies (especially in unmarried women), has received many names around the world and through the ages: the Southern African incubus demon is the “Tokolosh” or “Tikoloshe”, a dwarf-like supernatural entity; in Bolivia it is known as “La Sajra”, with appearance of a cat; in Brazil and the rainforests of the Amazon basin: “Boto”, a combination of siren and incubus; “El Trauco” in the traditional mythology of the Chiloé Province of Chile: a hideous deformed dwarf who lulls nubile young women and seduces them; “El Mohán” in Colombia; “El Sombrerón” in Guatemala; “Chusalongo” in Ecuador: an entity dressed in black, that suddenly transforms into a clawed dwarf; in Turkish culture an incubus is known as “Karabasan”: evil beings, thought to be spirits or jinns, that descend upon some sleepers at night. In many cases the victim's health gradually deteriorates and in some cases develops suicidal tendencies.
In Swedish folklore there is the “Mara” or “Mare”, a spirit or goblin that rides on the chests of humans while they sleep, giving them bad dreams; in Mexico it is known as “Jarel” (referring to the sleep paralysis with the words «se te sube el muerto») ; in Philippines they call him “Tikbalang”; “Dorlis” or “husband-in-the-night” in Martinique and some African regions; “Liderc” in Hungary: here, a Satanic lover that flies at night and appears as a fiery light (an ignis fatuus); “El Kuripí” in Paraguay: a creature with a gigantic male member; “Baku” (“Eater of dreams”) in Japan; “Popo Bawa”, in Zanzibar.
The “Alp” of the Germanic folklore is one of the better known (sometimes likened to a vampire, but its behavior is more akin to that of the incubus), as well as the “Mårt” or “Mårt-pressure” (also called “a Mårt-ride”); “The Popobawa” is the name used in Swahili language, which translates literally as "bat-wing": a sort of dark shadow cast by mischievous and evil spirits when they attack at night.
Nevertheless, the earliest mentions of an incubus come from Mesopotamia, ca.2400 BC • via Bibliothèque Infernale on FB

BITING A GHOST —Pu Songling (1640-1715) Shen Linsheng once told me this story. A friend of his, an elderly man, was taking a nap one summer’s day and had drifted into a dreamlike state, when he perceived a woman raising his doorblind and entering his room, her head swathed in a length of white cotton and her body clothed in the hempen dress of mourning. She walked on into the inner apartments of the house, and he thought she must be his neighbor’s wife come to pay his own wife a visit. On reflection he found it strange that she should be making a social call dressed in full mourning, and was still puzzling over this when the woman came out again. He looked at her more closely this time, and saw that she was a woman of some thirty years, with a sallow complexion, bloated features, a pronounced frown, and a strange expression on her face that struck fear into his heart. She hesitated a while and then slowly approached his bed. He feigned sleep, but secretly watched her every movement. The next second, she hoisted up her skirts, clambered on to his bed, and pressed herself down on top of him with the force of a ton weight. His mind was still clear, but his hands when he tried to lift them seemed tied fast, and his feet when he tried to move them were paralyzed. He would have cried out for help, but try as he might, he found he could make no sound. The woman now began to sniff her way all over the old man’s face, rubbing her nose in turn on his cheeks, his nose, his eyebrows, his forehead. Her nose was cold as ice, and her chill breath penetrated his very bones. He conceived a sort of desperate plan: he would let her work her way down to his jaw and then he would bite into her. Soon enough she reached his jaw, and he sunk his teeth deep into her face, summoning up every remaining ounce of strength. She tried to pull away, struggling and yelping in pain, but the old man bit into her harder than ever. He felt the blood dribbling down his jaw and dripping down on to the pillow. He was still struggling to hold on when he heard his wife’s voice out in the courtyard, and cried out: “Help! There’s a ghost in here!” He relaxed his jaw in order to speak and thereby released the woman, who flitted from the room. His wife came hurrying in and, seeing nothing whatsoever, made fun of her husband for having been deluded by a nightmare. The old man told her in detail about the apparition and protested that the blood shed by the strange woman would be proof that it had been no mere nightmare. There was indeed a great wet stain on both pillow and bed, as if a large quantity of water had leaked through the roof, and when he bent down and smelled it, it gave off such an extraordinarily foul stench that the old man began to vomit violently. Several days later, he could still taste the lingering stench in his mouth.

If you could only watch one episode per season for the rest of your life - what episodes are you choosing?
Oooo tricky!
Season 1: The Harrowing. It is one of my fave and I have a huge soft spot for Tabitha and Hector. Plus Hector pulling out Lord of the Dance kills me everytime.
Season 2: Ooo this is hard cause I do love Cold Comfort and Gadge but I would properly pick Cold Comfort. I could watch it over and over.
Season 3: The Riddle of Sphinx. Need I say more.
Season 4: Again it is hard to pick between Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room and Zanzibar because I love them for different reasons but probably Bernie (even though it breaks me).
Season 5: The Stakeout. I love the interactions between Varney and Thompson and we do love vampires.
Season 6: How do you Plead? This is one of my new faves! The story, the characters, the music is just 👌👌 (Also Urban Bedford is bae shh)
