Thomas Jennings was a free man born in 1791 in New York City. He was 30 years old when he was granted a patent for a dry cleaning process. In his early 20s Thomas Jennings became a tailor, and later opened a dry cleaning business in the city. As a tailor. Jennings' skills were so admired that people near and far came to him to alter or custom tailor items of clothing for them. Eventually, Jennings reputation grew such that he was able to open his own store on Church street which grew into one of the largest clothing stores in New York City. While running his business Jennings developed dry-scouring. He had many customers complain of their clothes being ruined by stains and so he began experimenting with cleaners and mixtures that would remove the stains without harming the material. He earned a large amount of money as a tailor and even more with his dry scouring invention and most of the money he earned went to his abolitionist activities. In 1831, Thomas Jennings became assistant secretary for the First Annual Convention of the People of Color in Philadelphia, PA. Thomas L. Jennings Dry Scouring technique created modern day dry cleaning. Jennings was fortunate that he was a free man at the time of his invention. Besides all the other indignities and cruelties slaves had to face, they were also ineligible to hold a patent. Under the US patent laws of 1793 a person must sign an oath or declaration stating that they were a citizen of the USA. While there were, apparently, provisions through which a slave could enjoy patent protection, the ability of a slave to seek out, receive and defend a patent was unlikely. Later, in 1858, the patent office changed the laws, stating that since slaves were not citizens, they could not hold a patent. Furthermore, the court said that the slave owner, not being the true inventor could not apply for a patent either. Thomas Jennings died in New York City in 1856.

Thomas L. Jennings (January 1, 1791 – February 13, 1856) was an African-American inventor, tradesman, entrepreneur, and abolitionist in New York City, New York. He has the distinction of being the first African-American patent-holder in history; he was granted the patent in 1821 for his novel method of dry cleaning. Jennings' invention, along with his business expertise, yielded a significant personal fortune much of which he put into the Abolitionist movement in the United States.

Nonsexual Dominance with the EMHH + MH Boys
(A/N yall sleeping on the Koval brothers smdh, also,
EverymanHybrid
Evan <;3
Piloting
Evan often times finds himself guiding you places, whether it be grabbing your arm (gently) if you start to wander off in a grocery store, walking with a hand on your lower back when he and his friends plan a hiking trip, etc. He just doesn’t want you to wander off where he can’t help you. Evan also really loves driving with his hand on your inner thigh, thumb tracing shapes as his eyes focus on the road ahead
Groom
I like to think Evan takes pride in his appearance most of the time, he’s worked hard to get the body he’s wanted! What they’re not to take pride in? That kinda transfers over into your appearance. He’ll brush and style your hair for you if you ask, pick out outfits together, hell. Evan even taught himself how to do makeup just to pamper you. He loves dressing you up (with permission ofc) to match his outfits! He’s possessive at heart and it’s just his cute way of say ‘we’re together, fuck off’. (Please do the same to him he’ll cry if you take the time to brush his hair for him)
Jeff <3
Groom
Jeff finds playing with your hair comforting, it grounds him. So after some jokes that ‘ he just needs to learn how to do hair.’; Jeff finally does. He knows his way around YouTube and after a couple weeks he’s offering to do your hair almost everyday! Jeff also likes picking out/suggesting clothing options! He likes colors that look pretty against your skin and will always point out which ones do in his opinion, though you always look great in everything you wear <3
Shoelaces
Jeff here loves to take care of you, and more often than not he finds himself kneeling down to tie your shoelaces, always grumbling about how ‘It annoys him’ and ‘ You could trip!’ So, he takes the liberty of tying them for you, though you think he’s beginning to catch on that you’ve been untying them for a while now..
Vinnie
Order
If you’re not the public speaking type, Vinnie is your guy!! He loves ordering for you if you don’t feel like speaking (or if you have nonverbal episodes {i.e me} ). He won’t tell you want to get though, In his mind thats some douchebag bullshit so he’ll just either have you point out what you want or go to a place you both regularly visit and order your usual. He just wants you to be comfortable.
Resting
Vinnie is very observant when it comes to you, so if you’re tired he’ll throw his arm across your shoulder and pull you closer, resting your head on his shoulder. He always plays it off like you were already leaning on him though.
Marble Hornets
Tim/The Masked Man
Lit
Sometimes when his hallucinations start getting the better of him, Tim will sometimes talk long walks wit no particular destination in mind. He’ll run his fingers through his hair and hold out his hand, a cigarette between his fingers, grumbling for a light. He’ll ask you to flick the lighter and ignite the cancer stick for him, and you do begrudgingly.
Pilot
It’s out of sheer habit that Tim does this, he’s subtle with his PDA, so a guiding hand you lower back or a gentle tug at your hand is common. It’s easy to get lost in the woods of Alabama, and he’d rather not loose you in the same forest that the thing is in. Tim is a grumpy dude, so don’t expect him to entertain your teasing in public, just a crooked grin and chuckle usually.
Brian Thomas
Feeding
I like to think Brian has younger siblings or used to take care of people younger than him, so it kinda delves from this and the fact you got sick one time and he had to spoon feed you soup for a week. It’s almost natural to him now, raising a spoonful of whatever he’s eating/making to you and wait for you to eat it.
Assertive
Brian loves you, he really does but sometimes you want to make stupid decisions and he doesn’t want you to get hurt, so he has to be more assertive sometimes. Sure, he’s not gonna stop you from doing the stupid thing, but don’t expect sympathy when you come back to him saying he was right (he’ll baby you dw, hes just the ‘ i told you so’ boyfriend)

“I’m quite fascinated by Thomas in many ways. There’s an emotional bravery but also a naivety – there’s an eccentricity to him but there’s also the constraints of the aristocracy and things he’s grown up with. What made him get up and go and come to a landscape where it’s barren and you’re living with the land? I think he misjudged it. He probably had a vision of what it was and that leads me towards what I think is the heart of him - he’s an idealist and a romantic. I was determined to get this hope in there, this pulsing beat of optimism.“
Tom Hughes talking about his character in The English (2022).

Day 31- For What We Fall
Traintober 2023
Other Stories
Day 31-Lights Out
For What We Fall
A/N: This Story is the follow up to Day 9-The Fallen Light
The lorry pulled to a stop, eyeing the valley below dubiously. From atop its trailer, Caomhnóir looked grim as his crew climbed out of the lorry’s cab,
"Thank you for coming, Caomhnóir," Skarloey said. I know it was not an easy trip to make."
The tank engine gave a tense smile, "No thanks are needed, Skarloey. The Lady looks after all engines. Even those that were stopped from passing on."
"It's true then." Duke said, "Proteus is being held here by the spirit."
Thomas frowned, "No, not directly. Only the Lady can prevent another engine's soul from passing on. Whatever is happening, Proteus has bound himself, whether he realizes that or not."
"Can you unbind him?" Jennings asked.
"I do not know. He must wish to be unbound first. I have been blessed by the Lady to protect both those passed on and any they would seek to harm, but that does not give me the ability or the right to control them.”
A cool wind blew through the valley, winding its way through the assembled engine's wheels.
"We're being watched," Rheneas guessed.
"Indeed." Thomas activated his lamp, the golden light shining into the gap where the bridge once stood.
The wind pulled back with a hiss.
"We are not here to harm you." Caomhnóir called softly, "only to keep you from harming others."
Skarloey saw Duke and Jennings shift discontentedly, but they did not disagree with the shining guardian.
The wind hissed, curling around the rocks and trees of the valley, cutting through the waves of the water far below.
'Liar.'
Before the tank engine could reply, a soft whistle echoed up the valley, sending a shiver down the engines' frames.
"Proteus," Duke whispered. Jennings looked stricken.
The wind shifted, blowing towards the sound.
"You don't have to believe me." Caomhnóir said into the quiet air, "But trust him."
The wind stilled from a moment before it blew towards the point the whistle had come from.
The whistle came again, softer this time, its tone encouraging.
The wind slowly shifted and Skarloey knew it was considering Caomhnóir."
Finally, it made a sound like a sigh, and the wind moved down towards the cliff.
The fallen leaves around them began to swirl together, attempting to form a small shape.
The whistle came again, and where the old iron bridge once stood, a golden light appeared, as if an engine's lamp stood in the air before them. Fireflies flew from the woods behind them, to form behind the light, taking the shape of an engine very similar in shape to Skarloey, with a large lamp atop its smokebox. A tear trailed down Jennings's face as she beheld her brother's form.
Proteus's light shone on the leaves, strengthening the wind until the leaves swirled together into the spirit's form.
Caomhnóir ignored the stricken gasps of the narrow gauge engine as he looked at the child before him.
"Hello little one." He said gently.
The spirit regarded him with open suspicion. He allowed his lamps to dimly shine on her, the spirit shuddering at the unexpected warmth.
"Is that better?" He asked. The spirit nodded slowly.
Thomas smiled at her. "May I ask why you tried to push Sir Handel off the bridge the other night?"
The girl's head tilted in confusion.
"The engine that your guardian calls Falcon."
'Lonely.' The wind whispered through the leaves.
"You tried to kill Sir Handel because you were lonely?" Duke asked in askance.
The spirit slowly pointed towards Proteus's light.
Proteus let off a mournful whistle.
"You wanted for him to have a friend." Thomas guessed. The child nodded.
"I don't believe Proteus wants you to kill another engine to keep him company."
Proteus whistled an agreement.
'Left,' the wind hissed accusingly.
Duke was the first to figure it out, "the railway closed." He said, the spirit turned to face him. "The Mid-Sodor fell. We were all sold off or left behind. None of us wanted to leave, this was our home, just as this was once yours."
"You know who this is?" Skarloey asked.
"I believe I do," Duke said gravely.
"Before either of you arrived," he said glancing at Jennings and Proteus, "the locals would use the bridge to cross the valley. We told them it was dangerous, but they didn't listen. One night during a storm a family tried to cross...they never found the youngest child's body. The railway funded a bridge for foot traffic further up the valley after that."
"Do you know her name?" Caomhnóir asked.
"Elin," Duke answered, the spirit perking up at the sound of her name.
"That doesn't explain why she killed Proteus." Jenning snapped.
Proteus whistled sharply at his sister, who looked taken aback.
"She was alone." Caomhnóir translated for the human crews. "She didn't attack out of malice, but out of thirty years of desperation to not be alone anymore."
"Why did he stay?" Skarloey asked.
Proteus wheeshed mournfully.
Thomas sighed heavily, "she didn't know how to move on, and he could no more have left her to suffer alone than he could renounce the Lady."
Jennings and Duke looked stricken.
The fallen engine whistled at Caomhnóir.
The tank engine shook his head mournfully, "I'm sorry, I don't know how humans pass on, if she were an engi..."
Thomas suddenly cut off and the other engines stared as his eyes turned completely golden, his brass fittings and number one shining brightly in the dying light. The light faded and Thomas shook his head.
"Never mind,” He gasped, “the Lady has decided to intervene."
Samantha looked up toward her engine, "Is the Lady intervening for a Human even allowed?"
"A human? No. But a child?" Thomas grinned dangerously, "I don't believe there is anyone dumb enough to stop her."
He glanced over to Proteus, "Even with her aid, she will need a guide."
Proteus whistled resolutely.
The spirit looked back and forth between Caomhnóir and the fallen engine before she approached the tank engine, laying a spectral hand on his running board.
The two stared at each other for a long moment before Thomas spoke quietly.
"I promise. By the Lady, you will see your family again."
The spirit looked at him a moment longer before walking to where Proteus stood, climbing into the cab
"Proteus!" Jennings whistled, "Will I see you again?"
Proteus whistled firmly and Thomas's eyes glowed brighter, "The Lady has recognized his sacrifice." Thomas said, "As long as rails run through this valley, he will watch over it. We do not know how long his journey will take, but he will return."
"I miss you everyday brother," Jennings said, crying.
"And I as well," Duke said, tears of his own trailing down.
Proteus whistled softly back before the light turned towards Caomhnóir. The meaning was clear.
'Ready.'
Caomhnóir's lights powered up, the light burning brighter, swirling around the fallen engine and his passenger. It grew brighter and brighter, the engines and crews forced to look away from its intensity.
A triumphant whistle was heard and the light cut out, leaving only the engines and crews on the cliff.

Useless//Habit x Reader
sfw/no warnings
sorry this took so long im sorta lazy ://
You know he’s an evil man, not even man, thing more likely. You know you shouldn’t. But how can you resist when he’s grinning at you and holding doors for you. Even he knows he’d let the door slam in anyone else’s face.
He knows you’re shy, easy to get under your skin, that’s why you’re his favorite. Habit may be ruthless to Vin or Jeff, but god forbid if he ever was to raise his voice at you.
There you are, sitting on Vin’s porch with your knees to your chest. The storm has just begun and rain is pouring. You can hear Habit cackling in the house, teasing and terrorizing the others.
“How did it come to this?” You think, playing with the loose strings on your clothing. No one even noticed you were outside, at least you thought.
Memories replayed in your mind. How you would sit and listen to Habit, not yell or try to rile him up. You listened with purpose, and that’s what he adored.
Yeah messing with Vin and Jeff did cause him joy, but oh how he felt when you would include him in stuff. The others only wanted to get answers from him, treated him how he should be treated. You couldn’t argue, he had a cold heart.
That’s when you noticed the door swinging open, jumping at the sudden movement and sound. You gasped and turned around, looking at the man hovering over you.
He’s wearing his Death Proof hat, a plain shirt and some worn out baggy jeans. Habit’s smirking and it does no help with the butterflies in your stomach. He sits downs next to you and huffs.
“Hey..Everything okay?” You ask softly, observing how he’s hiding his face in his hands. All he does is groan and mumble incoherently. You go to ask again but he lifts his head and turns to stare at you.
“You ever yearn for something you can’t have?” He speaks, his voice is shaky, it’s something he’s definitely been hiding. You sit and think about it. “Mm, yeah I guess. Why?” You respond. This doesn’t seem like Habit, you wonder if parts of Evan is coming out.
Habit examines your face, then your hands, then back to your face. “What can’t you have?” You ask, slowly placing your hand atop of his. He jumps a bit, like he’s surprised you’re willing to touch him.
“I gotta go.” He says emotionlessly, staring at you. He stands up quickly and rushes back inside, grabbing his jacket and heading to his car. Your mouth is agape as he passes you down the stairs.
You watch as he drives away, a cold and staticky feeling washes over you. You feel like screaming, but nothing will come out. Is this for the best? Is this something that was suppose to happen?
You try not to overthink it, standing up and going back inside. Jeff is standing in the kitchen, holding a cup and observing you. Has he been watching? Didn’t he go with Vinny downstairs.
You shake it off your mind and head upstairs to your bedroom.
