[ID: A colored, digital illustration of Link and Marin from Link's Awakening. It is a bird's eye view of the scene where Link washes up on Toronbo Shores, with one difference: Link is a mermaid.
Link rests her head on her right arm, wet hair spilling over her shoulder. Her hat, scabbard and shield are resting in the waves next to her; her tail drapes behind her as water laps at her scales. She has pink hair and a bit of a tan. Marin kneels and reaches out a hand tentatively. She is a woman of color with brown skin and russet curls. Both of their faces are obscured. end id]

Location name references in Breath of the Wild
A year or so ago, I went through the location names in Breath of the Wild and tried to find out which names reference previous things from the series. The following is an overview of everything I was able to find back then. Will be taking this region by region and adding some observations where relevant. I also think most of these names are the same in Tears of the Kingdom but I know at least a few changed, so all of this may not apply to that game. Of note is also that I am leaving out the more obvious ones like Gerudo Desert, Lake Hylia, Death Mountain and the Lost Woods as these tend to be well-known. This focuses on the slightly more obscure ones.
I do want to point out one major one though: the Hebra Region (ヘブラ地方). This is actually a reference to A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds and Four Swords Adventures. In the former two, the main name of Death Mountain in the Japanese version is ヘブラ山 or Hebra Mountain. In Four Swords Adventures meanwhile, there is a minor region on Death Mountain called Hebra's Hill (ヘブラの丘). But let's get into the more minor references.
Gerudo Region
Tumblr media
Arbiter's Grounds = Arbiter's Grounds from Twilight Princess
Spectacle Rock = Spectacle Rock from The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II and A Link to the Past. Many similar locations, sometimes with similar names, have also appeared throughout the series.
Koukot Plateau = the names of Koume and Kotake, who together make up Twinrova, smashed together. They appear in Ocarina of Time, the Oracle games and the memories in Tears of the Kingdom.
Mount Nabooru = Nabooru from Ocarina of Time and Nabooru Town from Zelda II.
Yarna Valley = Yarna Desert from Link's Awakening.
East Gerudo Mesa = Gerudo Mesa from Twilight Princess.
Overall, this region has few references, mostly centered around deserts and the Gerudo people. The only odd one out is Spectacle Rock, which is usually located in the north of Hyrule on Death Mountain.
South of Lake Hylia
Tumblr media
Parache Plains (テトラ平原/Tetra Plains) = Tetra (テトラ/Tetra)
Faron region
Tumblr media
Lake Floria/Floria River/Floria Bridge/Floria Falls = Lake Floria from Skyward Sword.
Martha's Landing = Martha's Bay from Link's Awakening.
Tuft Mountain = King Tuft from Tri Force Heroes.
Toronbo Beach = Toronbo Shores from Link's Awakening.
Koholit Rock = Koholint Island from Link's Awakening.
There is no real theme here, aside from the locations on Eventide Island referencing Link's Awakening, as the whole island is a reference to that game. This region also contains the only reference in Breath of the Wild to Tri Force Heroes.
Great Plateau and southwestern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Digdogg Suspension Bridge = Digdogger from The Legend of Zelda and Oracle of Seasons.
Manhalna Bridge = Manhandla from The Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons and Four Swords Adventures.
Gleeok Bridge = Gleeok from The Legend of Zelda, Oracle of Seasons, Phantom Hourglass and Tears of the Kingdom.
Aquame Bridge = Aquamentus from The Legend of Zelda and Oracle of Seasons.
Mount Daphnes = King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule from The Wind Waker.
Lake Kolomo/Kolomo Garrison Ruins = the Lokomo from Spirit Tracks.
Forest of Time = Forest of Time from Oracle of Ages.
Temple of Time = Temple of Time from Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. The appearance of the structure most closely resembles the Ocarina of Time incarnation.
The bridges here are named after bosses from the first Zelda games, which is a running theme with the bridges around Hyrule Field. The other bridges are named after bosses from the other NES Zelda game, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, however.
Kakariko Village and Southeastern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Proxim Bridge (モヨリ橋/Moyori Bridge) = Aboda Village (モヨリ村/Moyori Village) from Spirit Tracks.
Owlan Bridge = Owlan from Skyward Sword.
Horwell Bridge = Horwell from Skyward Sword.
Eagus Bridge = Eagus from Skyward Sword.
Batrea Lake = Batreaux from Skyward Sword.
Nabi Lake = Navi from Ocarina of Time.
Mable Ridge = Maple from the Oracle games and A Link to the Past (GBA).
Sahasra Slope = Sahasrahla from A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds.
Telta Lake = Tatl from Majora's Mask.
Lake Siela = Ciela from Phantom Hourglass.
Pillars of Levia = Levias from Skyward Sword.
Bonooru's Stand = Bonooru from Ocarina of Time.
Pierre Plateau = Pierre from Ocarina of Time and (maybe) Majora's Mask.
The island in the southeast of Hyrule Field is centered around Skyward Sword references, while the area around Kakariko Village contains references to helpful characters from throughout the series: companions and friendly NPCs. If I had to hazard a guess, this is a general reference to the Sheikah's and Impa's supporting roles throughout the series, as Kakariko Village is their home in Breath of the Wild.
Tabantha and Hyrule Ridge
Tumblr media
Kolami Bridge = Komali from The Wind Waker.
Seres Scablands = Seres from A Link Between Worlds.
Breach of Demise = Demise from Skyward Sword.
This region contains relatively few references. This is of note because there is only one reference made to the Rito from The Wind Waker, which makes sense considering the Rito live in Tabantha in Breath of the Wild. However, there were a lot of named Rito that appeared in The Wind Waker and only one is referenced in Breath of the Wild. This is especially notable as there are a lot of references to individual Zoras, Koroks/Kokiri and Gorons in other regions of the map.
Northern Hyrule Field
Tumblr media
Carok Bridge = Carock from Zelda II.
Helmhead Bridge = Helmethead from Zelda II.
Rebonae Bridge = Rebonack from Zelda II.
Orsedd Bridge = Horsehead from Zelda II.
Mount Gustaf = King Gustaf from The Minish Cap.
Mabe Village Ruins/Mabe Prairie = Mabe Village from Link's Awakening.
Romani Plains = Romani and Romani Ranch from Majora's Mask.
Rauru Settlement Ruins/Rauru Hillside = Rauru from Ocarina of Time and Tears of the Kingdom and Rauru Town from Zelda II.
Crenell Hills/Crenel Peak = Mt. Crenel from The Minish Cap.
Thims Bridge = Smith from The Minish Cap.
Minshi Woods = Minish Woods from The Minish Cap.
Pico Pond = the Picori from The Minish Cap.
Trilby Plain = Trilby Highlands from The Minish Cap.
Here we see the rest of the bridges that reference the NES games. The eastern island and area further to the northeast in general contain many references to The Minish Cap (not pictured here is also the Trilby Valley that also references that game). Mount Gustaf to the west meanwhile is one of three mountains that references a king of Hyrule: we also have Mount Daphnes mentioned earlier and Mount Rhoam in Hyrule Ridge, which of course references king Rhoam from Breath of the Wild itself. Finally, the places named after Rauru could be named after the sage from Ocarina of Time, but it is also possible they reference the first king of Hyrule from Tears of the Kingdom. It depends on how much of Tears of the Kingdom's story was conceptualized when Breath of the Wild first released.
Lanayru Region
Tumblr media
Trilby Valley = Trilby Highlands from The Minish Cap.
Zauz Island = Zauz from Phantom Hourglass.
Linebeck Island = Linebeck from Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
Mercay Island = Mercay Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Molida Island = Molida Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Bannan Island = Bannan Island from Phantom Hourglass.
Goponga Island/Goponga Village RUins = Goponga Swamp from Link's Awakening.
Inogo Bridge = The Indigo-Go's from Majora's Mask.
Tabahl Woods = Tabahl Wasteland from Link's Awakening.
Zodobon Highlands = King Zora de Bon XIV from Ocarina of Time.
Oren Bridge = Oren from A Link Between Worlds.
Ralis Pond = Prince Ralis from Twilight Princess.
Luto's Crossing = Laruto from The Wind Waker.
Rutala River/Rutala Dam = Queen Rutela from Twilight Princess.
Ruto Mountain/Ruto Lake/Ruto Precipice = Princess Ruto from Ocarina of Time and Ruto Town from Zelda II.
Toto Lake = Toto from Majora's Mask.
Mikau Lake = Mikau from Majora's Mask.
Lulu Lake = Lulu from Majora's Mask.
Ja'Abu Ridge = Lord Jabu-Jabu from Ocarina of Time and Oracle of Ages.
Veiled Falls = Veil Falls from The Minish Cap.
Lanayru has a pretty clear division, with the western Wetlands mostly referencing Phantom Hourglass and the eastern Great Spring containing many references to Zoras and characters relating to the Zoras. We also see a few stray references to Link's Awakening and Veil Falls from The Minish Cap. This is notable because in that game, Veil Falls act as the source of Hyrule's water, which is also often the case for Zora's Domain whenever it appears in the series (and so too in Breath of the Wild).
Lanayru Bay
Tumblr media
Samasa Plain = Samasa Desert from Oracle of Seasons.
Brynna Plain = Labrynna from Oracle of Ages.
Horon Lagoon = Horon Village from Oracle of Seasons.
Talus Plateau (トロイワ高原/Toroiwa Plateau) = Talus Peaks (トロイワ山地/Toroiwa Mountains) from Oracle of Ages.
Lodrum Headland = Holodrum form Oracle of Seasons.
Tarm Point = Tarm Ruins from Oracle of Seasons.
Wintre Island = Woods of Winter from Oracle of Seasons.
Spool Bight = Spool Swamp from Oracle of Seasons.
Tal Tal Peak = Tal Tal Peaks from Link's Awakening.
The area around Lanayru Bay is a hotspot for references to the two Oracle games. The stray reference to Link's Awakening (DX) also fits this theme, with it being the other Zelda game for the Game Boy Color, as well as the other Link's Awakening references in Lanayru in general.
Great Hyrule Forest
Tumblr media
Upland Lindor/Lindor's Brow = Linder from The Wind Waker.
Irch Plain = Irch from The Wind Waker.
Rowan Plain = Rown from The Wind Waker.
Elma Knolls = Elma from The Wind Waker.
Aldor Foothills = Aldo from The Wind Waker.
Mount Drena/Drenan Highlands = Drona from The Wind Waker.
Lake Mekar/Mekar Island = Makar from The Wind Waker.
Lake Saria = Saria from Ocarina of Time and Saria Town from Zelda II.
Mido Swamp = Mido from Ocarina of Time and Mido Town from Zelda II.
Lots of references to Koroks and Kokiri, which makes sense as the Koroks live in this area in Breath of the Wild.
Eldin Region (a.k.a. Death Mountain)
Tumblr media
Lake Darman = Darmani from Majora's Mask.
Darunia Lake = Darunia from Ocarina of Time and Darunia Town from Zelda II.
Gorko Lake/Gorko Tunnel = Gorko from Skyward Sword.
Gortram Cliff = Gortram from Skyward Sword.
Darb Pond = Darbus from Twilight Princess.
Medingo Pool = Medigoron from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.
Gero Pond = Don Gero's Mask from Majora's Mask.
Lots of references to Gorons, as the Gorons live here in Breath of the Wild. Don Gero's Mask is probably here because it is initially worn by a Goron in Majora's Mask.
Akkala Region
Tumblr media
Kanalet Ridge = Kanalet Castle from Link's Awakening.
Ulri Mountain/Ulria Grotto = Old Man Ulrira from Link's Awakening.
Torin Wetland = Tarin from Link's Awakening.
Malin Bay = Marin from Link's Awakening.
Ukuku Plains = Ukuku Prairie from Link's Awakening.
Kaepora Pass = Kaepora Gaebora from Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Four Swords Adventures.
Tingel Island = Tingle, who appears in a lot of Zelda games.
Ankel Island = Ankle from The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures and The Minish Cap.
Knuckel Island = Knuckle from The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures and The Minish Cap.
Davdi Island = David Jr. from The Wind Waker, Four Swords Adventures and The Minish Cap.
Akkala is a cluster for Link's Awakening references, with the reference to Kaepora Gaebora likely also tying into this. That owl's spiritual predecessor, simply called the Owl, namely appeared in Link's Awakening. The islands of off Akkala's coast meanwhile are named after the four Tingle brothers.

Link battles Sand Crabs and Leevers in brief new clip of Link’s Awakening remake
The official Japanese Zelda Twitter account shared a 14-second clip of the Link’s Awakening remake, which sees Link heading east on Toronbo Shores.
You can see Sand Crabs and Leevers in their remade forms as Link battles his way through the beach.

links awakening isn’t a perfect game.
so far, there have been TWO situations where i had to look up how to get past a certain area.
1. i had to figure out how to get the boss key of the second dungeon to appear(i was killing the rabbit first, and moving onto the skeleton enemy in the room above, when i should’ve been attacking the enemy that looked like a weird cultist).
2. i was trying to get the walrus in animal village to move, and got marin’s song from her ocarina. but no matter how much i tried, none of the animals would react. so i checked a playthrough, and you needed to meet marin at toronbo shores. but i traveled to toronbo, and she wasn’t there.
turns out you needed to do sidequests for the animals before marin would appear...
it’s a fun game, but it has it’s flaws.
at least it’s better than NES zelda 1, where you can’t figure out where the other dungeons are...

"You found your sword! It must be yours because it has your name engraved on it!"
Linktober Day 9: Sword Place!
The Blade of Evil's Bane and its resting places would be an obvious choice here, but I think we should give some of the other swords in the series some love sometimes, too. I'm sure this humble blade has been on many adventures with ALttP Link, so here's the place where you find it in Link's Awakening - on Toronbo Shores, the beach where Link shipwrecked.

Day nine wow (sorry i get more and more surprised each day that im having the ability to continue this)
Today we have some Wind and Wild platonic angst (why do i always have to do angst with wild??? *cries*
Hopefully nobody dies but I’ll decide it as I write.
--------------------------------
“Hey, Wild look!” Wind exclaimed. They had recently arrived in Wild’s Hyrule where they were staying at Lurelin for a few days. This town had to have been the furthest thing from Hyrule castle. The closest guardian was all the way near the horse god and even then it was closer to the Gerudo Region.
“What is it?” Wild asked, curious to what the sailor may have found. “That island.” Wind pointed across the water.
“Oh, that’s Eventide island. On top of Koholit rock is Korgu Chideh Shrine.” Wild explained, pointing at the shrine.
“I’m sorry, what rock?” Legend asked from behind the two. “Koholit. Y’know, west of Toronbo beach? I thought you were awake when I was telling Time about it?” Wild said. It was true, the previous night he told Time all about the ranch ruins, Mabe village ruins, Eventide, the Spring of Power, basically anything he thought was suitable.
(anything I thought was a reference to another time lmao, I might make a post later)
“No, I was asleep. It’s been a while since we’ve stayed in comfy beds.” Legend said. He looked like he’d just seen a ghost. Wind hoped he was okay.
“Can we go over there?” Wind asked. “No way, Time put me in charge of you two and I’m not going anywhere near that goddesses forsaken place!” Legend exclaimed. Wild and Wind shared a knowing look before booking it to the closest raft.
“Get back here you idiots!!! Wild is the only one that knows how to fight in this world!!!” Legend yelled as the other two jumped onto the raft. “No way Vet! You guys are safe in the village, if anything we’re the ones in danger!” Wild yelled back with a laugh. “Really?” Wind asked in an excited tone.
“Hell yeah, there’s an over world boss on this island. I think it might be a blue, or second grade, hinox.” Wild explained, taking out his korok leaf.
“Whaddya gonna do with that?” Wind asked, cocking an eyebrow. Wild smirked.
“This.” He swung at the sail and the boat pushed forward. “Cool!” Wind said in awe.
The two boys sailed along but as they got closer to the island, the wind got rougher.
“You okay, Wind?” Wild asked. The younger boy was sitting down, holding some of the rope on the raft. “Yeah it’s just, really... me... out here.” Wild looked at the boy in disbelief.
“Did you just make a pun with your name?” “Yes.” “Dear the goddesses you’re stupid.” “Hey!” “What?”
Wind playfully glared at Wild before the two started laughing. “Anyway, we should go back. This is the closest I’ll take us.” Wild said, taking out an oar to turn the boat around. “Okay.” Wind stood back up excitedly, wanting to tell everybody what happened.
Suddenly, a rather large gust of wind came through. Without anything to grab, the sailor was thrown overboard. Sure, he could handle cyclones but he was in a boat. This was a raft. Y’know, nothing to grab!
“Wind!” Wild yelled out, reaching for the sailors hand. “Shit!” He pulled out the slate and made a block of ice behind the younger hero.
It didn’t stop him.
For some reason, the wind was now going towards Eventide. If Wind wasn’t stopped, he’d be stuck there and only one person can be on the island at a time.
“Fucking shit.” Wild said as he saw Wind wash ashore. Wind was basically 50 metres away from the sandbank but had no way to get Wind off the island. Then he had an idea.
Wild pulled out the Shiekah Slate.
“Wind, I’m going to talk you through this step by step.” Wild said, seeing the sailor look into his Pirate’s Charm. (the necklace is called The Pirates Charm)
Wild placed a cryonis block and sat on it. If he stayed on the raft, he’d go back to shore before Wind was done.
Also, he burnt the raft so the boys couldn’t come looking for them.
A few days later
“Wild!” Said hero looked up from his spot on the ice block to see Wind running - slightly limping - on the sandbank toward him.
He was battered, bruised and bloody. Wild would have to heal him up before someone like Sky saw, He worried a lot about the other heroes.
As soon as Wind was on the ice, Wild enveloped him into a hug. “I thought you were dead.” He laughed. Wind hadn’t replied since fighting the hinox. “Sorry, I pocketed this so I couldn’t hear you.” Wind said. Wild squeezed him a little.
“I’m sorry I took you here.” He said. “It’s not your faul-” “Yes! It is!” Wild pulled back with tears going down his cheeks.
“Wild-” Wind was cut off again. “When I did this the first time I was knocked out over and over. I was on the verge of death without my weapons. You don’t know how lucky you are to have experience before doing this!” Wild exclaimed. He went to Eventide not long after meeting Purah and wasn’t very experienced against Hinox.
He doubted Wind was experienced with them but the younger hero had been through three adventures and remembered them all. He had more fighting experience than Wild did his first time here.
But that didn’t stop wild being scared for him.
“Wild, I’m fine. Just a few scratches.” Wind said, looking up at the other blue-clad hero.
“Can you jump that far?” Wild asked, pointing to a nearby ice pillar he made in preparation for when they go back. Wind shrugged and jumped across, using his korok leaf like he had seen Wild use his paraglider to go between these.
“Yeah.” He landed on the other side. “Good.” Wild smirked before breaking the ice. “AAH!!! WILD!!!” Wind shrieked as he was plunged into cold water.
“I hate you so much!” He yelled out in a fit of laughter, looking up to see Wild was gone. “Wild?” He looked around before being pulled underwater.
He looked around panickedly to see bright blue eyes staring back at him. Wild pointed up and Wind looked to see a lizalfos. Wild pressed a finger to his lips and led Wind through the water.
Wind could feel himself growing lightheaded so he tugged on Wild’s shirt. The other hero looked at him as his eyes closed.
He didn’t let the air escape him, just closed his eyes as he strained to not breathe in.
He couldn’t stay awake much longer.
He felt the air leave his lungs.
Shit. Shit. Shit!
That’s all Wild’s brain was saying as Wind passed out.
There wasn’t time to give Wind anything before so the older hero forgot to give him a zora helmet.
“...fault!...” Wind could hear snippets of conversation.
“...Twilight!...”
“...himself!...”
“...danger!...”
Wind shot up. “Danger?” He asked, scared there was an ambush.
The other eight people visibly jumped.
“Oh my goddesses Wind.” Wild took the hero of wind’s into a hug. “I’m so sorry.”
SLAP!!!
The sound resonated throughout the room.
“Heh. Nice hit.” Legend said, scooping food into his mouth as Twilight glared at him. “What? It was a good hit!” He gesturing his hand towards Wind as he spoke. Twilight shrugged in a way that said ‘yeah okay’ before continuing to watch Wild and Wind.
“This isn’t your fault Wild!” Wind yelled. “Yes it is! You could’ve died.” “But I didn’t!” “But you nearly did on the way back!” Wild got louder and more distressed. “There were lizalfos!”
“I could’ve taken them!” The room went quiet as Wild began to cry.
“I-I could’ve beat those lizalfos easily but I was so mad I let you get lost on the island that my first thought was to get you away.” Wild said, his shoulders shaking as he looked down. “In the end, you could’ve died because of that. I should’ve just fought it, but I didn’t.”
“Will you ever shut up?” Wind asked with a laugh as he hugged Wild once more. “’You’re dumb and I hate you.’ Is that what you wanted to hear?” Wild shook his head.
“Then shut up and stop blaming yourself.”
END

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening (2019) - Sword Search on Koholint Island
Link’s finally awake after washing up on Toronbo Shores, and Marin thankfully retrieved his trusty shield. But...hey, where’s his sword? Go find it so this story can really begin!
Needless to say, this is an arrangement of the song from the Game Boy original.

Top is what my island is like currently without terraforming. (For the most part. I  a little before realizing that I should take a picture for a before vs after.)
Second is roughly what I’d like my island to look like. I was going to do a Mabe Village/Toronbo Shores and maybe a little bit of Animal Village combination but when I started changed my mind. I put too much Bells into the island before terraforming so I’m not going to make any dramatic changes.
It’s going to take me almost two weeks to make changes because I can’t move more than one building every 24 hours.

Tingle's Maps: Toronbo Shores - The edge of reality
"It would seem most residents of Koholint are not too fond of the beach, But one resident, Marin, seems to visit Toronbo Shores almost as frequently as Link." Tingle's Maps: Toronbo Shores - The edge of reality #TinglesMaps
Marin finds Link shipwrecked on Toronbo Shores Toronbo Shores is a location you will visit quite frequently in Link’s Awakening. You’ll do many things here like shipwrecking, sword searching, even trading dog food for bananas: basically everything other than what you probably want to do at the beach. It would seem most residents of Koholint are not too fond of the beach, maybe because of all the…
