Honoring Black Maternal Health Week: April 11th - April 17th
From April 11th to April 17th, we recognize Black Maternal Health Week, a crucial time to raise awareness about the unique challenges and disparities faced by Black birthing mothers, birthing parents, and their families. This week is especially significant as it begins with the International Day of Maternal Health and Rights on April 11th, highlighting the intersectionality of maternal health and human rights.
Black Maternal Health Week shines a spotlight on the alarming disparities in maternal health outcomes experienced by Black mothers and birthing parents. Despite advances in medical care, Black women are disproportionately affected by pregnancy-related complications and have significantly higher rates of maternal mortality compared to their white counterparts. Black infants also face higher rates of mortality and morbidity, highlighting systemic inequities in access to quality healthcare and support.
It is unacceptable that in the United States, Black women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. These disparities persist regardless of socioeconomic status, education level, or access to healthcare. Structural racism, bias, and unequal treatment within the healthcare system contribute to these disparities, perpetuating a cycle of inequity and injustice.
During Black Maternal Health Week, we stand in solidarity with Black mothers, and birthing parents, families, and communities, and we amplify their voices in calling for action. We demand policies and programs that prioritize maternal health equity, address systemic barriers to care, and center the experiences and needs of Black birthing individuals. We advocate for culturally competent care, access to comprehensive reproductive healthcare, and support for maternal mental health.
As we observe Black Maternal Health Week, let's continue to take action to address the disparities in maternal health outcomes. Let's educate ourselves and our communities about the root causes of these disparities and the importance of advocating for change. Let's support organizations and initiatives that work to improve Black maternal health and empower birthing parents to navigate the healthcare system with dignity and respect. If we work together, we can create a future where every mother and family receives the care and support they deserve, regardless of their race or ethnicity.
Organizations that we can support or promote to our Black Communities for assistance:
- Black Mamas Matter Alliance
- Black Women's Health Imperative
- National Birth Equity Collaborative
- Sista Midwife Productions
- National Black Doulas Association
- SisterSong
- The Shades of Blue Project
- Mamatoto Village
- Black Birth Justice
- Loveland Foundation
- Every Mother Counts
- Momology Maternal Wellness Club
- Sisters in Loss
- Birthing Advocacy Doula Trainings

Every day as a black woman, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sibling, auntie, cousin, and friend I pray to make it home. I pray my loved ones make it home. Our education, professional success, and other accoutrements do not add value to our lives in the eyes of those who seek to destroy our race. The blood of Blacks continues to be shed in the name of hatred. Non-POCs do not understand the level of PTSD and mental anguish we face while maneuvering through daily activities. Just the struggles we as POC face just to show up…to work, church, school, or even shop is baffling. We bear a smile, perform, and conceal too well. We do this in the name of strength for those who walked before us endured many egregious acts. But, I’m tired of being called strong. We are tired of being seen as strong. Let us just be humans. Let us be seen, heard, and valued not for our contributions but because WE ARE! Enough is enough! The injustice, disrespect, and slaughter has to end. #wematter #saytheirnames #stopkillingus #fyp #explorepage #tyrenichols #blacklivesmatter (at Las Vegas, Nevada) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn_AttVNSYY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

No Happy Anything
It’s unnerving how some people can make you sure of your irrelevance within minutes of being around them. You understand how much you don’t matter. How insignificant you are; to them, to the world at large. That is not a bad thing, on the contrary. I feel it puts things in perspective. However, for a person like me who has a habit of exploring her surroundings and reading the people that are…

• A 25 year old young, victim of caste politics, hung himself in rupangarh area of ajmer district. • He alleged in his suicide note that how police, under political pressure, wasn't actively investigating on his complaint about assault on his physically challenged father by an upper caste villager. The deceased, identified as Omprakash Raigar, in his suicide note, which has now gone viral on social media, alleged that he had filed a case, complaining about an assault on his physically disabled father. However, the Rupangarh police and a local from an influential community diluted the report, creating political pressure. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This is what no one seems to understand. 06/24/22 was the day the government seriously 100% declared war on not only us (The American people) but also past and future generations.
We need to remind them why they need us. They need us to pay taxes. They need us to have the power they have. Without us, without the people, there wouldn't be anything to govern. They wouldn't be rich if it wasn't for us. Just like they can take away our rights, our freedom, our choices, OUR LIVES. We can take away their lives just as easily.
THEY NEED US. WE DO NOT NEED THEM.

I Love Me — VoicePlay music video
youtube
Everyone has insecurities. Sometimes they can make it difficult to like the person you see in the mirror. If you need a little help loving yourself today, take a listen to VoicePlay and Emoni's upbeat reminder that each of us is unique and wonderful.
[NOTE: After the song ends, Emoni promotes her suicide prevention initiative, #WeMatter. If hearing about this subject would be upsetting, you may want to skip or mute that part.]
Details:
title: I Love Me (feat. Emoni)
original performers: Meghan Trainor, featuring LunchMoney Lewis
written by: Ricky Reed, Gamal "LunchMoney" Lewis, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Meghan Trainor, & Thomas Troelsen
arranged by: Layne Stein
release date: 28 September 2016
My favorite bits:
starting simple but upbeat with just Emoni's melody, Geoff's bouncy bass line, and some snapping
all the informercial-style struggle acting
Layne beatboxing while using the hairdryer, which I have to imagine would have dried out his mouth a bit
those harmonies on ♫ "I'm gonna fly" ♫
Geoff's little grimace when he eats the unmixed protein powder
how low Eli gets at the end of his ♫ ⇘ "I'll be fiiiine" ⇘ ♫ riff
Layne's fantastic percussion breakdown
Tony's crisp interjections as he changes into his comfy goth wear
all of the guys cutting out to appreciate Emoni's big riff
Geoff, Tony, and Eli's legato ♫ "I love me" ♫ rhythm under the higher voices going wild
Earl and Emoni's harmonized ♫ "I don't know about you" ♫ run
Nick swooping in to smooch his husband's cheek, and the way Earl's face lights up 😍

Trivia:
The first hair product Layne wrestles with is their tried-and-true ultra hold spray that keeps their ’dos in place through all of their onstage antics. I'm pretty sure the second one is a styling gel from the same product line, but we only see the back of the tube and the current packaging design is slightly different from the one he had in 2016.

The tattoo on Earl's collarbone that he debates whether to reveal or cover was designed in memory of those lost at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando earlier in the year.
This was their first track mixed by Ed Boyer, a legend in the a cappella recording world. Eventually bringing him into their regular workflow has freed up some of their time and allowed them to do even more and better music.
The video description credits their camera work to "Skyn E. Leggs". What a silly way to say they used a tripod.
When this video was first released, YouTube had a more flexibile option for on-screen links, so selecting one of the singers from the screen at the end of the song portion would take you to an unlisted video that was a full-length cut of just that singer for the entire track. Sadly, those have since been made unavailable, but the voiceplay_randomness account on Instagram managed to get copies of most of them: Layne ● Emoni ● Geoff ● Eli ● Tony
