Cocoon (Adelta) Review + Guide

Recently I decided to re-play a visual novel I haven’t heard that many people talk about, Adelta’s first game, Cocoon! Adelta is pretty well-known these days for their other games, Koshotengai no Hashihime and Uuultra C, which were both released in English, but I don’t think many people have played Cocoon. I couldn't really find any English summaries or reviews, so I decided to write my own while I was re-playing the game. Cocoon was released in 2014 and there's actually two games, 'Cocoon' and 'Cocoon Black Noise', but I decided to include both of these in this review.

Synopsis Set in the second half of the 21st century in the Taitō Ward of Japan. In this world, talented indivuduals are embedded with a microchip called the ‘Sky Implant’ (SI). These implants decide what kind of special skill set these people receive. Our protagonist Sora, is a painter who lives in Asakusa. He has a form of synesthesia which makes him able to 'see' colors in human voices and environmental sounds. After graduating from a special training school, he moves to a SI-based mansion called 'Cocoon'. For those who live inside these mansions, work can be done remotely from home, daily necessaries are usually bought online and human contact is minimalized. One day while visiting a museum in Ueno, Sora meets a mysterious person with bright red eyes, setting off a chain of events.

Characters

Hajima Sora SI Skill: Artist | Age: 20 | The main character of this game. He doesn’t go outside much and tries to express his view of the world through his oil paintings. In contrary to his serious appearance, he’s not very good at studying or getting work done.

Kondo Yuki SI Skill: Social worker | Age: 21 | Sora's childhood friend who cares a lot about him. After his parents died in a fire when he was young, he decided to become a firefighter. He cares a lot about others and will try to save anyone in danger.

Motogi Gin SI Skill: Engineer | Age: 26 | A music producer who likes sharing his creations with everyone online. He’s also a big fan of Sora. He has been trying to meet Sora for a while now after seeing one of his paintings. Incredibly easy-going and optimistic.

Shio (CO) SI Skill: None | Age: 20 | A foul-mouthed young man who often pushes himself to achieve his own goals. He is one of the people the Sky Implant was tested on many years ago, but escaped the facility together with an engineer. Multiple personalities reside inside his body. He returned to Tokyo to take his revenge on the company that created the Sky Implants (Mother). He has the ability to read people’s minds.

Kagami Motogikyō SI Skill: Engineer | Age: 27 | An employee of Mother, the company that created the Sky Implants. A very intelligent and serious man who is strict with himself and others. He’s Gin’s half-brother. A side character in the first game, but has his own route in Black Noise.

Yashiro SI Skill: None | Age: 20 | A tall, intimidating looking man. People around him often don't understand what he's thinking. Similar to Shio, he was part of Mother’s Sky Implant experiments, but he didn't develop multiple personalities. He’s a side character in the first game, but has his own route in Black Noise.

Tsukishiro Ayato SI Skill: None | Age 24 | A mysterious side character who Sora keeps running into. His hobbies include visiting art museums and watching Kabuki. Doesn’t have his own route but he does have some bad endings in both games.

Tsukishiro Yoshimasa SI Skill: None | Age: ??? | A mysterious young boy who looks like Ayato. Although he looks like a child, his way of speaking is similar to an adult. Also a side character.

Takamiya Kaname SI Skill: None | Age: 20 | A young photographer who’s originally from Hokkaido. He’s very soft-spoken and uses polite language when when he’s talking to children and animals. He is currently undergoing a rehabilitation project in Tokyo. He only appears in Black Noise and also has his own route.

The story of Cocoon and Cocoon Black Noise is pretty much the same, but each game has different routes. Yuki, Gin and Shio only have routes in the first game, but Kagami’s and Yashiro's routes are only in Black Noise. The second game also adds a new character called Takamiya who also has his own route. I have to say that the quality of Black Noise is definitely better and it also has a lot of new scenes, but I also feel like it's better to play both games because they're short anyway. The only game I can kind of compare it to is CAGE, which is also split into two different versions (CAGE -OPEN- and CAGE-CLOSE-).

By the way I’ll be calling CO ‘Shio’ in this review because that’s how they pronounce his name (and I don’t want to keep writing CO to be honest...)

Immediately after starting my first route (Yuki) it becomes clear that this futuristic society deals with a lot of problems. There’s a new kind of computer virus which has been infecting Sky Implants and violent arson attacks and bombings are becoming more frequent. Sora and Yuki witness this almost immediately after their trip to the museum. Normally the Sky Implants prevent people from committing any crimes or hurting themselves, so they suspect this series of strange events is caused by someone else’s actions.

I recommend playing Yuki’s route first and Gin’s after that. After finishing both of these you unlock Shio’s route, which feels more like the ‘’true route’’. Shio's route reveals a lot more information about Mother and the individuals who work for this company. Yuki’s a bit of a possessive childhood friend character which I’m not always the biggest fan of, but his route wasn’t too bad, it just doesn’t really explain much. Gin is a funny character, I like how he basically lured Sora into his house by...pretending to be a girl online. However, I liked Shio’s route the most because it’s a lot longer than the others and we finally learn what is up with him and Yashiro. Some Shio route spoilers below!

It turns that that whatever has been ‘infecting’ people wasn’t a virus after all, but a person called ‘Shou’’. Shou was accidentally created by Mother (the company that created Sky Implants and the network) and has no physical form, so he can only posess others. He’s one of Shio’s other personalities, but Shio doesn’t always seem to agree with the damage Shou causes.

Yoshimasa (the young boy who looks like Ayato) is actually the founder of Mother. He must be almost 90 years old but I think he has the ability to shift his consciousness to his family members or change his physical form? Though he also used a hologram in another scene. What surprised me the most is that Ayato (the guy with the long purple hair) is his son.

After finishing the main game I immediately played Black Noise and decided to play Takamiya’s route next because he doesn’t appear in the main game. Sora meets him during the park scene after they visit the museum, but he doesn’t like talking to him. His voice is ‘jet black’ and it makes Sora feel somewhat uneasy. They also added a new side character, a detective who’s investigating the recent incidents. Takamiya seems to have a difficult time understanding other people’s emotions and his bad endings are pretty brutal. He spent six years in a youth detention center because of his psychopathic tendencies. I did think he was an interesting character but oh man did I have trust issues every time he showed up.

After that I played Kagami’s route who appears a lot in the first game too. It was interesting to see everything from his perspective. In this route they chase Yuki, who has been posessed by ‘Shou’. I had no idea Kagami used to have a wife and children?? They all passed away in an accident, but the Sky Implant limits his emotions which is why he’s able to act pretty normal. Eventually he disables this and he starts showing strong emotions again. Kagami turns against Mother and in the good end he purchases a solar power business in Austria and they move far away from Mother’s network and influences. By the way, he looks good without the glasses too! A pretty solid route.

Yashiro’s route is the last one I played and it’s not the most ‘happy’ route. Sora follows him because he wants to meet Shio again, but nobody knows where he went. Shio’s... unfortunately killed by Yashiro later in this route because Yashiro still follows Mother’s orders, and Yuki has been permanently posessed by Shou, so Yashiro kills him too. Surprisingly he doesn’t betray Sora and decides to run away together with him. In this ending they move to Osaka, but Mother is rapidly expanding their network to new cities, so they probably have to move again in the near future. The ending is kind of bittersweet, but I’m honestly surprised he got a good ending at all after everything that happened in this route omg.

There aren’t that many choices so luckily it wasn’t that hard to figure out! Some of the bad endings have a CG and some don’t, also Ayato has so many bad endings... The ‘full completion’ CGs should also show up immediately after you play the final ending.

Final thoughts Cocoon Black Noise was released some months after the first game and you can really see the improvement. I remember when I played Cocoon for the first time I wasn’t really sure what to think after playing Yuki’s and Gin’s routes, but the other routes do a much better job at explaining the plot. I really liked Shio’s and Kagami’s routes. Takamiya’s route was pretty interesting, but I kept fearing something horrible was going to happen, so I had some trust issues while playing through some of the wholesome scenes LOL. Yashiro’s route was...an experience, I do like the ending but it was pretty painful to see Shio die after he became one of my favorite characters.

It took me about 8 hours to finish the first game, Black Noise's length was similar, so if you want to play a short visual novel and see how Kurosawa Rinko's writing and art has changed throughout the years, I do recommend playing this one (just don’t expect anything as polished as Hashihime). It’s only available in Japanese you can just use Textractor to translate the dialogue, if you don’t mind machine translations. Both of these games have a lot of CGs and they look pretty good! The only thing that could be better is the music I guess? There’s not a lot of different tracks and the game is unvoiced, so I often muted the game while listening to different music.

I also appreciated to little extras they added, like the full character profiles which you can unlock after finishing each route. Also, if you go to the gallery and look at the CGs there’s some fun extra commentary (though it’s Black Noise exclusive unfortunately). Some of these are really funny, especially Ayato and Yoshimasa’s... Ayato behaves like a pervert but Yoshimasa truly sounds like an old man lol.

By the way the official website doesn't seem to work anymore? I tried using the wayback machine but none of the pictures on the site work anymore and I can't really access any of the pages. You can still buy both of the games on DLsite though.

It’s been said that Okita’s mother, Ume (梅), came from the Miyahara family in Hino, and today I’m even more convinced about this.

Today [August 10, 2005], I went first thing in the morning to the Miyahara family, which is said to be the family home of Souji's mother. The wife informed me that Miyahara Hisao (宮原久男), the current head of the family, had been lying in bed for a long time due to health problems, but had finally recovered to the point where he could talk to people, so I visited him immediately.

Here in Hino, it is said by some people that Soujiro's mother came from the Miyahara family. Of course, the Miyahara family has passed down this belief, and Hisao, a descendant of the Miyahara family, has said so himself. That’s why I’ve written about it in my own work. However, I would like to be more certain. I wanted to hear it directly from the Miyahara family members and confirm it in person as soon as possible.

Why are there so few documents on Souji? The materials and relics related to the Shinsengumi were quickly disposed of early in the Meiji era (1868-1912), either burned or buried, or hidden deep in storehouses and barns, so there are few relics. This is especially true for Kondo, Hijikata, Okita, and Inoue, who were key figures in the Shinsengumi. The name in the Tennen Rishin-ryu Nakagoku Catalog that remains in the Hijikata family was altered to "Hijikata Yoshimasa," but this was probably done to blind the government authorities.

As we can see from Kondo’s execution in Itabashi, while Arima Touta of Satsuma was against it, he gave in to the Tosa samurai’s insistence for harsher punishment and had Kondo beheaded. At the time, Kondo had not yet been cleared of suspicion for the assassination of Sakamoto Ryoma, so unfortunately this increased the grudge against the Shinsengumi two or threefold.

Where in the world had Souji's belongings gone? It is said that he died on May 30, Keio 4, at the detached house of a gardener in Sendagaya (although there is also an Asakusa theory), but even so, there are no relics at all.

The Shinsengumi made an impact in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu, and more than half a dozen jouishishi, including those from Choshu and Tosa, were killed by the Shinsengumi. Okita Souji was the First Squad Captain of the Shinsengumi and the first assistant Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. If the Shinsengumi was an object of fear, Souji was a symbol of the forces on the Tokugawa side. For this reason, his death was kept extremely secret, and his body must have been quietly brought to Sensho-ji Temple in Azabu late at night to avoid being seen. All of his belongings must have been disposed of. However, I feel that his sword might have remained. Even if it is impossible to find a Kikuichimonji, there must be a sword somewhere.

Hisao said, "We had a sword in our house until the end of the war, but we had to give it up after the war.”

Perhaps that was the reason.... It was already too late. It is possible that he left the sword at his mother's house because he did not know where to take it. The Miyahara family is now in the construction business, but in the past they were peasant farmers, so it is highly possible that the sword belonged to Souji.

There is a local historian in Hino named Tani Haruo, who passed away last year, who had done good research on the Shinsengumi and on Souji.

I had a lot to gain from my visit to the Miyahara family, and I have been in a happy mood since this morning. Unfortunately, however, there were no documents left behind. Everything is just a "story" as told in the past, but still, it is very interesting and convincing enough. There is only one thing that Hisao showed me that he had recently discovered. It was a photo of Souji's mother's brother, Kyugoro, and an enlarged drawing of him. (See above).

For Souji, this is his uncle, so it would not be surprising for him to resemble his mother's brother.

Incidentally, there is a photo of his sister Mitsu in her later years, which many people already know, but when I compared it with Kyugoro's face, which I was shown today, I think the resemblance is somewhat striking. At least, it is quite different from the flat face that was modeled after Kaname, a descendant of Mitsu at the beginning of the Showa period. The Kyugoro I saw looked fearless and strong, too good to be true even for a samurai. He looked even stronger than Kondo-san and Hijikata-san. The confirmation that the man is Kyugoro is that his name was written on the photo as Miyahara Kyugoro.

Hisao, whom I met today, said, "My great-great-grandfather, Kyugoro, was a great man, so my grandfather (Isojiro (磯次郎)) took the character “久” from his name and gave it to me.” Hisao's grandfather's wife was named "Nui," and Hisao has learned that from her.

The important thing is that he has heard that Souji was the son of one of Kyugoro's sisters (it is not clear whether he’s the son of an elder sister or a younger sister). This is what people who are familiar with Hino's folktales have told me. I remember that Hijikata sent several letters from Kyoto, two of which were addressed to Taira Sahei (one was dated on the 10th day of the 1st month of Genji 1, with a picture of the Shogun's guard formation, and the other is to send his greetings to the priest of Takahata Fudoson Temple because Hijikata was on his way to fight Choshu and might not survive.)

This Taira family is related to Hijikata Toshizo's family, and their descendant is Taira Tatsuzo. He is 80 years old this year, but his memory is still vivid and he told me stories about the old days. When I visited him the other day, he strongly insisted that "Okita is a Hino native.”

I have been looking around for evidence, but I have not been able to find any documents, but today's story and the photo seem to make it even more true. What remains as a document is the existence of a draft of a letter that Inoue Taisuke (nephew of Genzaburo) was going to send to Okita's grandmother (also named Mitsu (様)). In this, it shows that the relationship between the Okita family, the Inoue family (both the head family and the branch family), and the Miyahara family is unusual. And, in this, the name of Miyahara Kyugoro appears in two places. The contents of this draft are a bit serious, and since it is about the tangled relationship between Mitsu's son Hojiro and Taisuke's sister Hana, we do not want to make the contents public, but the Inoue family has already made it available to us. Thanks to this, we know the depth of the relationship between the three families.

Then there is the difficult question of why the Okita family and the Miyahara family have a relationship through marriage. It is a well-known fact that the Okita family has been related to the Inoue family and its branch families since then, but how the Okita and Miyahara families came to be related is a mystery. However, I have a theory that it’s not inconceivable. I will leave that for the next article.

Do you have Shamrock headcanons…

Ask and ye shall receive!! :D

First up, Shamrock only really started wearing his hair slicked back to show off his eyepatch. He’s very proud of it, mostly because it was a present from Tsubaki. Having his hair mussed up is a great visual indicator of his wavering loyalties and how he’s no longer quite so certain that Tsubaki’s path is the right one.

Speaking of the eyepatch!! Very very few people have seen him without it. He’s a fair bit self conscious about the crater left behind where his eye was, and it makes him uncomfortable to not have anything covering it. Before, only Tsubaki and Higan had the privilege of being able to see Shamrock completely bare faced, but going forward? Shuuhei will probably join that very small number. He doesn’t realize just how much of a show of trust that is, but he will. Eventually, he will.

His bedroom is very minimalist and he hates having a mess. Ironically, his desk where he does the majority of his work for Tsubaki’s company is a disaster area… No matter how much he tidied it up it’s always a mess the next day or so later. Higan’s room gives him a conniption lmao

He’s more of a cat person! Not that he dislikes dogs, but he prefers an animal that will move at its own pace and be more content sharing a room with him, rather than constantly demanding his attention. … He very much does not tell Tsubaki this www

He has a soft spot for cute things, like plushies and chara bento. Making the latter became something of a hobby for him, and his Instagram page is full of weekly meals he’s prepared. Sakuya always refused his offers, Shuuhei doesn’t get a choice. You WILL eat better, so proclaims Shamrock!

Post war, he begins to accompany the Tsuyuki family when visiting Yoshimasa’s grave. It takes a LOT of convincing, but they manage. It helps that Misaki plies him with how luckless her brother is. If they leaving the carrying to him, everything will just end up on the ground, right? Right! Shuuhei doesn’t appreciate the tactic for the genius it is—

He likes to knit and sew. Like, he’s very much the househusband type. He and Mahiru probably follow the same bloggers and YouTube channels. Mari Kondo is something of an idol for him

He has a motorcycle license. Sakuya thinks it’s way too cool for him. Belkia agrees. Shamrock thinks they can keep their opinions to themselves.

He doesn’t like sweets very much. They make his teeth hurt. Same with cold food ww. They’re sensitive.
