The Exorcists’ Masks of Virtue
The vast majority of Exorcists in Hazbin Hotel have a notable design element that other angels don’t: their masks are missing an eye. Specifically, the right eye.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I believe this is a reference to the Bible, Matthew 5:29. Jesus says, “If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.”
He’s being hyperbolic. Mr Free Healthcare was not pro-mutilation. What he means is that you have to be willing to make sacrifices to prevent sin. The context of the eye metaphor is him condemning adultery and warning that even something as easy, casual and small as a look full of lustful intent can lead to further, worse sin if you don’t notice your sin, hold yourself accountable for it and do the work to not let it influence your decisions. This will probably be hard. It could be very, very painful. Changing your perspective can feel as horrible as plucking out your eye, so many people can’t bring themselves to do it. But although it won’t feel that way in the moment, it’s healthier for our general wellbeing in the long run to abandon traits and behaviours that damage ourselves and/or others.
(You may notice that Jesus’s teaching that you can have sinned, redeem yourself by giving up sin and thus escape damnation is the founding principle of the Hazbin Hotel. You may also notice that it contradicts everything the Exorcists believe.)
The Exorcists seem to follow this idea of painfully excising badness for the sake of the greater good devoutly to the point of placing it above teachings like ‘Thou shalt not kill’, with their job being to remove sin, in the form of sinners, to protect Heaven. Hence the missing right eyes. They’re a declaration of moral righteousness and inability to stumble.
But the truth is that the Exorcists all have their right eyes. Their flawlessness is a facade. Underneath, they are untouched, think themselves morally untouchable and, as shown by their horror and outrage when even one of them is killed, would much rather be physically untouchable too. This perfectly represents their complete unwillingness to acknowledge their own faults, let alone improve. They are never the ones who sacrifice. They force the sinners to sacrifice and don’t compensate it with any salvation. They metaphorically rip out the sinners’ eyes, but still condemn their entire bodies as inherently, permanently sinful. So they’ll just have to do another Extermination to get the other eyes! And another one to cut off their right hands! And so on until there’s nothing left.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only exception to the rule is Vaggie, both in appearance and character. Her mask has the left eye crossed out instead. Even before her expulsion, she’s set apart to the audience as an Exorcist who has the capacity to, shall we say, see a different side of things. Her mask having its ‘sinful’ right eye reflects her understanding that the Exorcist worldview is wrong.
Tumblr media
When she almost kills a demon child, her hateful vision clears. She discards the part of herself that’s an unquestioning, merciless agent of death, terror and grief… and as punishment for what Lute perceives as treacherous weakness, gets her eye plucked out.
Tumblr media
Of course Lute leaves her with only the ‘sinful’ eye. It brands Vaggie forever as the inversion, a perversion, of what the Exorcists are meant to be.
Tumblr media
You know, all this talk of eye removal in the Bible reminds of another line - ‘an eye for an eye’. Adam directly quotes it in “Hell is Forever”. He uses it to frame the Exterminations as Old Testament-style punitive justice; the sinners did harm and so they receive it. But putting aside the debate about how ethical the concept of revenge is, the entire point of taking an eye for an eye is that it’s proportional. The punishment fits the crime. If someone cuts your eye out, you shouldn’t murder their whole family in front of them and then slowly disembowel them to death. That would be the sin of wrath. You should just make them pay without excessive pain or collateral damage. This is the fairest form of revenge.
The Exorcists don’t do that! The Exterminations aren’t proportional to the wrongs of all they hurt, nor was Vaggie’s brutal punishment equivalent to her extremely mild insubordination. Lute literally takes Vaggie’s eye, and more, after Vaggie does nothing to her! That’s the opposite of the phrase! Adam and his soldiers are wrathful and cruel, deriving satisfaction from others’ suffering. But they just can’t stop going on and on about how disgustingly evil the sinners are, in total hypocrisy… despite some of the sinners being far better people than the genocidal Exorcists are… it’s like they’re obsessed with specks of dust in the sinners’ eyes when they have massive logs stuck in their own. Oh hey, that’s in the Bible too!

The locked Tomb Series Names and Symbolism #2
Apparently I am going to do more of these... So, today's subject; Anastasia and Samael. Bear with me, for this is going to be a long one.
I will admit that Anastasia and Samel are two of the characters that have most piqued my interest, alongside Cassiopeia, so it's needless to say that I am looking forward to seeing more of them in Alecto, as well as getting some answers. For now, however I would like to comment a bit on my own take for the symbolism Muir might or might not be trying to bring forth with these characters.
We are going to start with Samael first in this post, mostly cause I don't have a lot to say about him. There are only few things I know off the top of my head and they do not really seem relevant but let's do out best, shall we?
We are going to turn to Hebrew lore for this one, and I admit I am not the most well-versed when it comes to this, so feel free to correct me if I have gotten sth wrong. The gist of it is that Samael (meaning Venom of God - thanks wikipedia) is an archangel considered the accuser or adversary, seducer and destroyer. One of his most prominent roles in Jewish lore is that of the Angel of Death, meant to take the soul of Moses, and head of satans. He condones the sin of man, while remaining still a servant of God. In the Greek Apocalypse of Baruch, he is said to have planted the tree of knowledge, thus leading to his banishment. It is also mentioned that he is responsible for tempting Adam and Eve with a snake.
There is probably a lot more going on, but please bear with me. From what we can get from this one however, alongside the scant mentions of Samael in the books (as Anastasia's cavalier, whom John had to kill because sth went wrong, and someone Alecto carries some grief/guilt over "I am so sorry about Samael") I think we can assume that to some degree at least, Samael opposed what John stood for, with or without actively standing against him. A safe assumption to make considering that he risked partaking in Anastasia's new formula of ascension (which also speaks of the immense amount of trust he placed in his necromancer). I do think however, that he was a bit more vocal about his distaste in John's Method of achieving Lyctorhood, possibly even campaigning in favor of Anastasia and Cassiopeia's research. Or he would have supported it, seducing more people into it, had he lived. I would also like to address the "planted the tree of knowledge" bit, here. Because it would be awfully fitting, if said tree of knowledge was the fruits of Anastasia and Cassiopeia's labor. If said tree of knowledge was that necromancers didn't have to kill and consume their cavaliers in order to ascend, or proof that John's way was not the only way. That of course plays into the narrative that John is in fact a pathetic little man that is spectacular at manipulating events and rewriting history the way he wants it to be written, while still being a pathetic little man. (I swear he is so good at making you forget just how much grief he has caused, just how vindictive he can be.) So much like God banishing Samael, John kills Anastasia's cavalier during the haze of ascension claiming that something went wrong and he had to at least save Anastasia. (I am not entirely convinced that all of this is a lie, and I have a theory that Alecto could have played a role in something actually going wrong, unknowingly aiding John's goal)
One more thing I want to say about Samael that perhaps contradicts what I have so far written, is that note in the lore that he condones the sin of Man while remaining a servant of God. And I think that if we translate this in our case, TLT Samael, probably loved and respected John as his God, while campaigning and promoting the sin of man, which in this case, is lyctorhood without sacrifice. And that makes his death, if he was ignorant of what happened during it, all the more tragic and all the more beautiful.
Now to the Angel of death and leader of the satans thing. We all remember those demons that appeared in the end of NtN right? Now, this might be ridiculously far-fetched because to our knowledge Samael is dead right? (Who tells us this I wonder, and how do they learn of it?How accurate of a narrator are they? How reliable their source?) BUT what if, in John's killing Samael while within the eight fold world something went wrong? Something no one could anticipate? And Samael is not quite as dead as we think he is? Could he be the leader of these Demons in Antioch, sworn to destroy God for what he forced upon him and his necromancer and so many others before and after them? Does he retain cognition of who he once was? Does he not? Is he altered to really resemble a demon as we know them in lore? Or is he really dead and the echo of that disruption of the Eight- Fold word spawns those demons?
I don't know about you people but I am looking forward to unearthing some truths in Alecto.
Anastasia will be in a separate post, because this would end up being huge otherwise. Have a merry little Christmas people and take care of yourselves!

It's really sad how Victor expresses that all of his happines, and curiosity regarding science have dissapeared after the whole chain of events that led to the promise he made to Adam.
Not even Clerval's presence - who is basically the only person who can make Victor feel anything positive - is enough to get him out of his cycle of isolation, and depression. Victor's love for science is just gone, forever tainted by the deats of William, and Justine. And what was once a source of unlimited joy, and despair, it is now a chore that Victor must use to fulfill the promise.

Hi there, was hoping I could ask your advice if it’s okay! How might someone relatively new to the Castlevania fandom on Tumblr get to know the community better? 👋 I know everyone is super hyped for Nocturne, so I figured now was a good time to try to become more active in the fandom!
Hello dear, you're absolutely on point! 🕸️The Fandom🦇 is slowly awakening now that the Nocturne sequel is hitting the bend, so this is the perfect time to dive in, I'd say.
Now, I tend to be a fandom hermit personally on here for Reasons, but this isn't about me. Here's some resources!
Follow the tags! I noticed some of the most popular ones are #castlevania, #castlevania nocturne, #castlevania netflix, #castlevania fanfiction, #netflix castlevania. If you have particular character faves, follow their tags too
There are many creatives involved and versed in the Castlevania show&game lore on here. Browse the tags and posts, see what sounds interesting to you. Reblogging or commenting are always good ideas. If you see a piece of meta you like, comment, reblog, send asks, see where it gets you! This fandom has low key gained me some friends for certain.
Here's some blogs from which I've seen plenty of castlevania show (and game inspired) media, I've not interacted with all but worth checking out, mostly going from my side-blog items heh:

This list is by no means exhaustive and I am missing blogs for sure, therefore making this rebagel🥖able for anyone who wants to say hi, self-promote, both, or just add to the list.
Welcome to the fandom!
PS: won't comment on fandom dynamics or conflict, I avoid that as a rule, but remember to curate your experience: use the privacy and block features available. One aspect that (for now) makes tumblr different to other socials is that your fandom experience here is highly influenced by who you follow/see in the tags.
I'll also say the series fandom is *very* vibrant on twitter (or 'X', now, I guess). So if you're up for the latest and greatest, it's usually there. Not sure if you use that platform tho.

Look I know that not everyone who likes this game has bad taste or whatever. I’m sure there are things to enjoy about the reboot! It would be insencere to imply that every fan who likes it is a “fake fan” or whatever.
….but I find it very amusing nonetheless in this case
Do remember that the developers of this game made a whole presentation where they explained why their vision for DMC and Dante was better and cooler and that the original Dante was like “a gay cowboy” by comparison
Reply: I just love how the OG tweet can’t help but shit on the main games. What’s with fans of adaptations/reboots and being physically compelled to shit on the source material?
I really don’t like Adam Deats’ tone here. “The story was actually doing something”. Implying the OG games weren’t? Are the DMC games really this looked down on for their plots? They seem fine to me.
oh but the deats brothers are fans of the products they want to adapt. no it’s all ellis’ fault and no other if nfcv diverged from the source material :V

Best of Original Cartoons: Castlevania: Nocturne
FredFilms Postcard Series 3.8
Kevin Kolde changed American cartoons on television and streaming forever. And Thursday, September 28, will just be more proof of it.
You think that’s hyperbole?
When producer Kevin Kolde joined us at Frederator Studios in 2005, he brought along the animation rights to the Konami video game Castlevania, thinking it would make a great direct-to-DVD movie, and that the 30+ years of the franchise’s worldwide success would feed sequels forever. A “universe,” if you will. There certainly wasn’t any broadcast or cable channel that had shown a scintilla of interest in anything other than an animated comedy. Kevin, on the other hand was a dedicated video game player and felt that the video game-to-feature film attempts had been woeful failures. He was absolutely certain felt he could do better.
Who was I to argue?
It took 10 years after Kevin had recruited Warren Ellis to write the script and “no” after “no” after “absolutely not!” before the good folks at Netflix stepped up and gave a Castlevania series a chance. As a global video platform, Netflix was uniquely suited to reaching across the Earth to the game’s generation of fans. And Kevin’s team building of Warren, voice director Meredith Layne and Powerhouse Animation’s Sam Deats, Adam Deats and Brad Graeber would deliver a winning mini-series (the original movie script broken into four episodes) guaranteed to capture the imagine of fans that had been pining for adult animation that examined more than just the hijinks of a wacky family.
Kevin’s showrunning skills were unparalleled, extremely unusual for a non-writing producer. But all his instincts were perfect, extending to the notion that a franchise universe could be in the cards. Enter Castlevania: Nocture, a new series that, IMHO, is just the beginning.
youtube
Back to my original “hyperbole.” Cartoons on television have changed forever. Proof? Arcane, The Guardians of Justice, Beastars, Blood of Zeus...  the list goes on. And none them possible without the success of Castlevania.
You can thank Kevin.
.....
From the postcard back:
Congratulations! You are one of 125 people to receive this limited edition FredFilms postcard!

Castlevania Nocturne Season 1 Review
Its a good time to be a gamer, or an adult who likes animation. After decades of flop after flop, it seems that filmmakers and animation studios finally got their shit together, and realized that video games aren't just a fad that will pass in a few weeks. We can now rest easy, knowing that the people who make video game adaptations actually know what video games are, and did their research on them before putting pen to paper.
Tumblr media
Sure, in every boom, there's bound to be a few stinkers. I doubt any news outlet is putting the live action Monster Hunter movie in their 'Top Ten Best Video Game Movies' lists anytime soon. But as it stands today, the market for video game adaptations for the big (or small) screen is bustling, with major successes like the Super Mario Bros movie proving just how successful they can be.
Tumblr media
Streaming services, as well, have taken this in stride, putting forth their best and brightest to make some damn good shows for their platforms. With shows like Arcane, Cyberpunk : Edgerunners, and Castlevania (2017), most video game or animation fans have been eating well with Netflix, and the release of Nocturne last September was just another scoop on the sundae.
Tumblr media
Castlevania: Nocturne is a short animated series created by Clive Bradley, and directed by Sam and Adam Deats. Based on the Konami games, Nocturne follows a group of young magical heroes who work together to stop a secret ruling class of vampires from summoning a messiah and bringing about the end-times. A cunning show with a dark premise, Nocturne is 8 episodes of fast-paced, blood spraying, beautifully animated action that lives up to it's precedent's legacy.
Tumblr media
Coming just 2 years after the finale of the original series, Nocturne only ups the quality of the series as a whole on all fronts. For starters, the visuals. My god, the animation is incredible! I wish I could show every fight scene, every smoothly-animated sequence here, but alas, I'd lag the shit outta this post. I'll spare you, mobile users.
Tumblr media
Watching this show took me back to 2017, when the original series came out. Sitting on a bus, on a youth trip in the middle east, I'd watch the fight at the end of season 1 over and over, trying to spot how they animated it. Seven years later, I still find myself staring in slack-jawed amazement at the slick animation on display, which moves so fast that at times, I can't even tell what's going on. One thing's for sure, though: its goddamn beautiful.
Tumblr media
On top of that, Nocturne keeps the series' ball rolling, adding onto the previously established lore while keeping the past relevant, to make it fit the overarching narrative. It acknowledges what happened at the end of the previous series, and continues where it left off, albeit a few decades later. Nocturne's main characters aren't nobodies: their family lineage and abilities link them to the previous trio, showing how though the passage of time, the show stays the same.
Tumblr media
The main character, Richter, is a stark contrast to Trevor, the previous series' protagonist. He's polite, nicely dressed, works well with others, and has a lot to learn about his ancestry, which gets revealed more over time. Where Trevor felt like a seasoned vampire hunter, Richter has this sense of youthfulness about him, making him feel more inexperienced. We get to watch him learn and grow, rather than start with him already being experienced, and it feels satisfying to see how far he's come by the last episode. Plus he gives me gender feels, so he's alright in my books.
Tumblr media
Supporting him is Maria, this series' counterpart to Sypha, and Richter's adopted sister. She is a leader in the fight for freedom in the French Revolution, and can summon magical animals to fight for her. Her youthful energy, stubbornness, and deep knowledge of politics keep her from being another 'strong empowered woman' , a stereotype which many fantasy series believe is somehow akin to feminist writing.
Tumblr media
The third member of this series' main trio isn't a counterpart to Alucard, though she could end up being just as powerful. Annette, a Caribbean woman who fled slavery as a child, can harness the powers of an African god to control rocks and metal, to create weapons or help her allies. She is one of the first major Black characters in this series, and proves to be a valuable ally time and time again, saving her friends' asses at least a dozen times.
Tumblr media
Despite the show only being 8 episodes as of time of writing this, Nocturne manages to pull you in quickly, with its likeable characters and quickly escalating plot. When I started this show last year, I was hesitant to let go of the old trio and old story, and adopt this new one. By episode 4, though, I was into it, and wanted to know more about the story. While the original Castlevania takes four seasons to get to the point of a unified team and major evil, Nocturne does it in a fraction of the time, with all of the same grace and glory, and none of the season 3 like its predecessor. Now this is speedrunning!
Tumblr media
To top it all off, Nocturne continues its family legacy of giving some damn good representation in a show that's source material never really demanded it. Much of the main cast falls into various minority groups, and for one in particular, her struggles are shown in detail. We live in an era where a major animated action series features a metal mage who escaped slavery, an gay Aztec vampire who falls in love with a holy knight, a Black vampire with flaming hair and bat wings, and a vampire matriarch with the power to blot out the sun. There's something for everyone here, and I mean it.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, that's all there is for now. Castlevania: Nocturne, as it stands, is just one season, with a second on the way. Still, what's here is strong, and proves that the original Castlevania wasn't just a lucky break. Just like it, Nocturne delivers blazing fast action, awesome character design, and tons of representation, but quickens the pace of the story to get the ball rolling right away. After 8 episodes, I already feel attached to these new characters, and I anxiously await the next season. Who knows, maybe they'll add a werewolf character!
