summary: even in times such as yours, you still led a privileged life with nothing to ask for. that is until first your father, then your mother died and you were left to care for your two younger sisters. the position for royal physician seemed to be open and with your father having been a general and your mother having been a maid for the queen, you thought you might be able to get it.. little did you know that your visit to the palace would put a completely different offer on the table.
a/n: WE’RE BACK TO POSTING REGULARLY BITCHACHOS! ♥ and this deserves a fucking update, still one of my fav originals to date
Tumblr media
“Stop it, this isn't funny!”
You smiled from ear to ear when you could hear your sisters bickering with each other, walking up the familiar stairs to your home that you haven’t walked in weeks now, before carefully sliding open the doors.
Your youngest sister was annoying the older one with a stick, acting as if it was a sword, while the older one just wanted to be left alone.
Funny how so many things had changed... yet others stayed exactly the same.
“You should treat your older sister with a little more respect, you know?”
“(Y/N)!” both of them ran into your arms the moment you had finished your sentence, you hugging them as hard as you could, breathing in their scent that you missed so much, "You’re finally back!”
“I'm sorry I wasn't able to come sooner,” you kissed both of their heads, then showed them the bag that you were holding with a grin, “But I brought you a lot of treats!”
Were you allowed to take them? Probably not. But the kitchen staff always prepared too much for you concubines anyways. It’d be a shame to throw it all away when you had two wonderful sisters sitting at home who’d devour such things.
And indeed, the fact that you were gone for a while seemed to have been forgotten while they stuffed their faces.
For a moment you were afraid that maybe they haven't had enough to eat, but they looked healthy.
“Hey! Why are you eating so much, you make it seem like I haven't fed you at all!” Jun entered with crossed arms, “I've been cooking every day for you brats!”
“Sorry, Auntie Jun, but it's really good,” the youngest said.
She scoffed, but then quickly pulled you into her arms to greet you properly. After all, you also hadn’t seen her in a while.
“I got you something as well,” you whispered, pulling out a bag full of coins and sliding it into the pockets of her dress.
“No, no, no, I don't want this.”
“They give this to us every once in a while to buy new clothes, but I don't need that. You've been clearly taking care of them, Jun, I want you to have this. If not for you, then for your parents.”
She didn't like to take, she usually only gave, but.. she sighed in defeat when she knew she had to take it this time. Like you said, if not for her sake, then for that of her family.
“Thank you,” she squeezed you in her arms once more, then looked at the children to make sure they were still busy with the treats, before pulling you further away from them to have a private conversation.
What she was about to talk to you about shouldn't be heard by them.
“How are you? How are.. things?”
“I'm alright. They haven't found out why I'm there yet, but I think the queen is getting suspicious.”
“Because you're not pregnant, yet? The herbs work?”
“As well as I thought they would, yes. I've slept with four princes so far, so I should be pregnant by now. The good news, though, I heard that because Prince Seokjin is the heir to the throne, he is the one who needs to get a child as soon as possible. So the king ordered that nobody but him is allowed to get me with child and.. he hasn't been one of the four yet.”
“So as long as you stay away from him..-”
“Yes. At least it gives me an excuse. Not a good one, the queen knows men too well, but it's better than nothing.”
“Why haven't you talked to the king yet? You've been up there for a while, haven't you had the chance yet?”
“He's very reserved. Just like I had expected. My father used to tell me that he only saw him so much because he was pretty much the only person he ever trusted. I need a chance to speak with him when he’s alone.”
“Why can't you just tell anyone else? What about one of the princes? Maybe they could help you?”
“I don't know them well enough, Jun. Yes, some of them seem to like me a lot, but I can't take that risk. If I'm wrong, they might give the order to kill me. But with the king, I at least still have the card of my father to play. He will listen to me when he finds out who I really am and then all of this will finally be over.”
“So.. none of the princes could be an ally?”
“Well.. Prince Seokjin might be. He's.. troubled, these days. The weight of becoming the leader and bringing an heir into this world is crushing him. I talked to him once and I feel like he might understand me the most.. of what it's like to trying to look out for your family.”
“Then why not try that?”
“I've only seen him twice. I don't know what he's doing, but he doesn't seem to be much interested in me, to be honest.”
“Well, you managed to sleep with four princes so far. That's more than half of them. If anyone can do it, you can,” she put her hand on your shoulder, “But you need to be careful. I told you that the whole thing about you not being pregnant would cause a problem.”
“I know. But that is why I need to be careful with Prince Seokjin. If I see him and I really do end up sleeping with him but not get pregnant, then people are going to seriously ask questions. That is why the king is still my first option and Prince Seokjin only the second.”
“Whatever you do, you need to hurry,” she turned her head and looked at the two girls sitting on the floor, still eating and chatting about which treat they like the most, “They've been alright, but they ask questions that I don't know how to answer. They know you're working at the palace now, but not what you do there. Neither does anybody else. Yet. But if people do find out, I'm worried that they might treat the two differently. You know how the town folk looks at concubines.”
“I know. Which is why I'm grateful that you haven't said anything to anyone.”
“You know I'd never do that.”
As much as you would have loved to stay the whole night and talk more with both Jun and your siblings, time wasn’t something you had much of these days.
Concubines, especially those with your rank, were only allowed a short period of time in the village. Nevertheless, you spent every second that you could with your family, had your sisters tell you about what's new, cuddled a bunch with them and assured them that you'd be back soon.
However, this time saying goodbye wasn't as hard as the last time, because now they knew that you’d indeed keep your promise of returning to them.
You were not like mother, you would not abandon them.
“Can you bring more treats next time?” the youngest asked with big eyes, making you chuckle and kiss her forehead, “The red ones with the pretty flowers on top?”
“I'll bring you as many treats as you want.”
“YES!” and with that, she ran back into Jun's arms who smiled as well.
And you took that opportunity to kneel down in front of the older one, “Tell me honestly. Are things alright?”
“Yes,” she nodded, “Jun takes good care of us, don't worry.”
“You haven't had any problems? Did anyone try to come in here?”
“No, people leave us alone,” she hugged you tightly, “We're alright, (Y/N). Really.”
God, she has grown up so much.. how long hadn't you seen her? What happened to your baby sister that always tried to get guidance from you? Now it was almost like you could ask her for guidance instead.
“I'm so proud of you..”
“Just come back to us safely.”
“I will,” you kissed the top of her head and then got up from the floor, “I will see you all soon, alright?”
And with that, you walked back to the palace, your heart not as heavy as the last time, thankfully..
..only to run into Eun and..-
“Prince.. Taehyung,” you bowed, but couldn't help the smile that spread on your face when you saw how Eun had her arm hooked with his.
So.. this was her secret Prince, huh? Definitely not a bad choice... but then again... none of them were a “bad choice”.
“There you are! I thought I might see you at the market,” she smiled, “Where did you go?”
“I uh..- I was just.. taking a walk,” you lied with a nervous chuckle that you quickly covered up by switching topics, “Anyways.. did you enjoy your day?”
“Ah, it was so nice, we had a lovely time.”
As much as you liked seeing her this happy, something about this picture in front of you was making you furrow your eyebrows.
Eun had been the one to scold you for sleeping – genuinely sleeping – with Jimin. She had been the one to tell you that it 'wasn't your place', yet she had her arm hooked with Taehyung's and was looking at him like she loved him.
Whereas he seemed to be.. not nearly as interested in her.
And why did she never tell you about her prince? Why had she kept it such a secret? You had told her about all of the ones you had slept with and now that you thought about it.. she seemed to have been relieved.. and now it all made sense. She had been relieved because Taehyung hadn't been one of them.
“My brothers told me quite a lot about you, (Y/N),” you three walked back to the castle, three guards in front, three guards behind you, “Good things only, of course.”
And see, you saw the way he looked at you, but Eun didn't. She just continued to look at him with those loving eyes and.. it hurt you. Because out of everyone at the palace, she was the only one that you truly cared about.
“Thank you, your majesty,” you said plainly, “I very much enjoyed my time with them.”
You needed to talk to her.
Tumblr media
“Can I talk to you for a moment?” you pulled Eun aside at dinner later that night.
You thought about doing this some other time and giving her a bit more space, but you hadn’t been able to think about anything other than this. If she was truly in love with Prince Taehyung, then she needed someone to wash her head and tell her that this wasn’t a fairytale.
“Of course,” she followed you into the gardens, a place where you thought it’d be best to have such a conversation. Most importantly, because of the privacy.
“If I ask you a question.. will you promise me to be honest about it?”
“Yes. We're friends, aren't we?”
Which was exactly why you needed to have that conversation with her. Because you might end up being the one breaking her heart in the end. Because if Taehyung wanted to have you, he would.
“Eun.. why did you never tell me that Taehyung was your designated prince?”
“It.. just never came up.”
“It did.. a lot of times, actually. I kept asking you about it and you kept laughing it off. It was as if you wanted to keep it a secret.”
“Don't be silly,” she fidgeted with her hands, “Why would I keep that a secret?”
You stopped walking and gently grabbed her arm to make her stop too, “When you first met me, you said you wanted to be my friend because the other girls were all very competitive over their princes and that they had this mindset that they might change them and make them fall in love with them,” when she lowered her head, you knew you were right, “Eun.. did you fall in love with Prince Taehyung?”
It didn’t take more than ten seconds for her to burst into tears, confirming your suspicions.
You immediately pulled her close, rubbing your hands up and down her back, trying to comfort her as best as you could. You pitied her, really.
“Everyone else has at least two girls.. but Taehyung only has me. I thought.. I thought I was special..”
“But you are special,” you immediately leaned back to look into her eyes, “Don't you ever let a man not make you feel special. No matter who he is. You are beautiful, you are kind, you are intelligent and every man out there would be a fool not to see that.”
“But Taehyung..-”
“Is.. a different case,” you shook your head, “You said it yourself, Eun. These princes aren't looking for love, they're looking for sex and someone to give them children.”
“Not with you.. you aren't like that.”
“Yes, Eun, I am exactly like that. I'm just like you, just like every other girl here.”
“No,” she wiped away her tears and took a step back, “I overheard Taehyung talk to one of his brothers..”
“So..?” you furrowed her eyebrows, not knowing what she was trying to tell you here.
Eun straightened her back, “I don’t know which brother it was, but one of them told Taehyung that they had fallen in love with you.”

@hogwartsmystory is a predator (final)
If you haven’t read the other parts of this callout, I encourage you to start here. As in both previous posts, the normal tags are not included in order to allow this to reach as many people as possible. Potential triggers are listed below, and the main content is hidden to keep sensitive individuals from being unintentionally exposed.
TW: Pedophilia, Abuse, Gaslighting, Sexual Assault, Self Harm, Suicide, NSFW Topics, Faked Illness, Faked Mental Illness, Faked Death, Victim Blaming
Originally, I intended to craft this final part to you, the reader, as an emotional appeal. To be wholly honest, there’s only so much evidence that can be utilized without either forcing Jill to relive unnecessary trauma or exposing deeply intimate or personal parts of her life. Until now, everything I’ve told you and everything I’ve shown you is what was enough to convince me when Jill first reached out to me. If you, the reader, don’t believe the factual information that’s been presented so far, then I don’t think that you will. If you, the reader, believe Jill and her story, then no further evidence is going to magically make her story more true.
However, I don’t have to. Instead, I can let the friends-- the family--that Ren created on his website speak for themselves, and show you with their own testimony just the kind of person he was. Jill wasn’t the only person that Ren hurt. Jill wasn’t even the only person Ren preyed on as a sexual predator. Many people on staff, and many people outside of it, knew Ren and grew to have what they thought was a close relationship with him. People regarded him as someone to look up to, to find comfort in, to aspire after, to lean on; people thought of him as a friend and a hero in his community.
On April 12, 2021, at 9:57 AM Greenwhich Mean Time, the current administrators of Advanced Scribes issued a statement addressing Ren’s actions and his faked death. An additional announcement was made the following day. While the announcements themselves and the replies (including moderator statements) are publicly available, I have saved a print-to-PDF versions on Google for you to browse at your leisure.
I intentionally waited until the initial panic and outrage died out a little to let the most important statements come to light. Included in the PDF are sentiments that I personally thought were the most important sentiments; edits have been made and pages have been deleted, so you can see the current state of the conversations by visiting them directly. You can find the first discussion at https://advanced-scribes.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=42100#p1454263 and the second discussion at https://advanced-scribes.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=42107#p1454361.
Before you continue reading, please look over the statements and replies. The words of former staff former friends say more than I can ever hope to about Ren and the kind of reality that he stood for. Additionally, Jill herself has added to the conversation (username Rakuen), so you can read a bit from her perspective by looking into these announcements. After you’ve taken a look, continue below and I will sum up my final thoughts on this predator and his legacy.
Advanced Scribes • Our Statement (PDF)
Advanced Scribes • Change (PDF)
The Act of Grooming, Part 3: Entrapment
One of the reasons that predators get away with their crimes for so long is because they trap their victims. When they gain access to and successfully lure in their prey, they then engage in entrapment behavior to separate victims from other people and build reliance. The reason why kids are so prone to predation is because of how vulnerable they are. Young people just want to belong. They just want to have community, security, and affection. When they can’t get those things in their lives, they seek it out and take it where they can get it even when the situation is obviously bad. Kids can’t be held accountable for being smart because they’re kids. Jill was vulnerable. She wanted belonging and support. She fell into Ren’s lures, and he trapped her. He used his affection as a tool to solicit sexual favors and pictures from her, but never shared his face with her. She was always chasing his love, and all the while he was simultaneously preying on other individuals in the community. For God’s sake, this man had a selfie thread where underage girls would send pictures of themselves publicly on the site for him to look at, and he even intentionally disabled the website’s COPPA features.
Before Jill, there was Buttercup. Buttercup was also an admin, and she was also 13 when she met Ren. While Ren was a minor during he and Buttercup’s relationship, his behavior with her was just as predatory and Buttercup attempted to warn Jill via PM before she ended her relationship with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The picture he sent Buttercup wasn’t even him.
The entire time that Ren was convincing Jill that Buttercup was evil, and jealous, and a spiteful, hateful person, he was manipulating her the same way he was manipulating Jill. Ren is a predator who knows what he’s doing; he always has. He draws in his victims and makes everyone hate them so that he’s the only person they have. He makes them so desperate for his approval that they let him screw them over time and time again, and for what? Just to see his face. Think about what you read. He didn’t just do this to Jill and Buttercup. He did this to every person he cheated with or got close enough to get a grip on. Even if he didn’t sexually exploit someone, he emotionally did. An entire community of people suffered through this over and over and over again. Read the statements again. If you only read the live version, read the PDF.
I also want you to bear in mind that everyone on staff was equally a victim as they were an enabler. It doesn’t erase their responsibility, but their roles in this story or more nuanced than “moderator bad, burn the witch!” Some of Ren’s supporters were as young or younger than Jill when they met him. The two people most notorious for standing at his side right now were both “rewarded” with a relationship with him in the fallout of his faked death.
At some point, this man looked at his behavior and not only decided that he didn’t need to take responsibility, but that his victims daring to try and claim some kind of ownership over their own story was a personal affront to him.
Ren is a monster of his own creation. He chose to be that monster again, and again, and again.
What makes his enablers equally to blame is when they became adults and made a conscious choice to ignore what was happening, which brings us to the next topic.
Finally... How Old Was Jill?
Despite everything I’ve said and shared so far, I still get this question in my inbox.
How old was Jill? Did she lie about her age? Is she free of guilt because she was a kid? Did he know how old she was? Was she legal in her country?
I gave you all everything I had. There were some things I just couldn’t confirm because there was no proof either way. However, all of that changed when the announcements were released. I now know exactly how old Jill was when they began dating, exactly how old she was when people knew about their relationship, and even that Ren was public with all of this information. I also know that staff knew everything, and chose to do nothing.
As you can see in the screenshots above of Buttercup’s message, it was sent on Jun 17, 2015. At that time, Jill was 14 years old. By Buttercup’s estimation, they had been dating for around a few months, which is how I was able to discern the previous exact age of 14 years old at the time they began dating.
However, Ren himself refutes that fact in a Valentine’s post for Jill. As pointed out in the “Our Statement” thread, the post that user amnesia. references includes very sexual and disgustingly graphic descriptions of Ren’s activity with her. It also says this:
Tumblr media
As per the timestamp of this particular post (as seen below), Jill was 16 at the time. Ren, a man claiming to be twenty-five years old at the time, was proud to admit that he had been with Jill since she was 13.
Tumblr media
You can view the full PDF of this post to see what else he said here, but please be warned that his descriptions are NSFW and absolutely disgusting.
Warm Fuzzies Post (PDF)
No adult should talk about a kid like that. In the statements, several staff members admit that they knew that the two were dating when she was 16, and that it grossed them out. But none of them did anything. To amnesia.’s credit, they claim they tried to pursue legal action but found no viable routes.
From the discussions and statements, we can discern five things:
1. Jill was 13 when she started dating Ren. 2. She did not lie about her age. 3. Ren did not lie about her age. 4. Ren knew how old she was. 5. Staff knew how old she was.
Jill’s feelings and her opinions on staff and their behavior are separate from my own. She does not share my beliefs here, and I need to make it very clear that what I’m saying next is entirely my own opinion.
To everyone who was staff at that time: shame on you. It’s one thing to be a victim yourself and to not understand how or when to stand up for what’s right, especially when you’re young; it’s another to become an adult and to have let something like this permeate your legacy and your community for all this time. From what I understand, none of you are completely innocent in this. Ren wasn’t secret, he was loud and proud and he didn’t give a shit what anyone thought. Everyone who was an adult then and is an adult now shares some responsibility for that. Those of you who mean your apologies, thank you, but those of you who are using this event as a stepping stone to make that website into your own personal playground know who you are. Stop. There’s an entire generation of kids between AS and CS who have lost years of their childhoods to this shit and the only right thing at this point would be to turn the site over to the police so that Ren can answer for his crimes the right way.
To everyone else: protect the people around you. People like Ren don’t think about how other people think or feel. They don’t care who gets hurt or who they trample under their feet. Look around at your community, and ask yourself if those who interact with you know that you are safe. Inevitably, someone is going to get hurt. Are you the kind of person that they can come to when it happens, or are you the kind of person who will turn your head away?
Be the person that everyone knows they can come to, because, eventually, someone’s going to need you.

Scumbag System (SVSSS donghua) Episode 10 Thoughts (spoilers)
(covers SVSSS chaps 24 - 26, BC Novels Translations)
And thus the first season of the SVSSS donghua comes to an end...rather weirdly abruptly to be honest, but more on that later. Obviously I love the donghua. It was not perfect, but it still exceeded my expectations. I truly appreciate what they were able to do within their budget constraints and I think they captured the spirit of the source material perfectly, which is really all I hope for when it comes to adaptations.  The writing was strong, the humor hit the spot always (for example, when poor Shizun got motion sickness from sword riding, I guffawed), and they also gave us some of the most beautiful characters I’ve ever seen on screen, especially with Shen Qingqiu, Luo Binghe and Liu Qingge. I really, really hope they release official figurines for them. I’m going to start saving my money now just for that possibility.
Even though their time together in this episode was short, the BingQiu love was definitely strong. They gave them a combo move that was not in the source material: for someone like me who grew up watching Cantonese dramas, two characters who have a combo sword move (”雙劍合璧”!) are usually a couple so I was especially tickled by this addition. I am always thankful to the donghua team for the little Easter Eggs they give us for BingQiu, like the way Binghe's eyes lit up when he sees SQQ...
Tumblr media
or when SQQ touches him...
Tumblr media
Once again, for those not in the know, it can easily be interpreted as a disciple just being devoted and filial to his Shizun. But for those of us who have read the novel, of course we know it’s indication of Bingmei falling in love with SQQ. I love how subtle yet significant these little expressions of Binghe’s are, and I hope they continue on with these little touches even in the next season.
Of course then there are the more obvious gestures, like that HUG:
Tumblr media
It lasted for a good 15 seconds and oh my God look at the Binghe’s hand placement!  There was totally nipple groppage happening there! This wasn’t in the book by the way...SQQ didn’t get woozy and Binghe most definitely didn’t have to catch him like some fainting damsel, so we have the donghua team to thank for this wonderful moment of (sexy) physical contact between the two of them.
The donghua team was also especially generous in this episode since not only did we get some BingQiu love, but we got a pinch of LiuShen and QiJiu love too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LQG’s eyes were on SQQ the entire time! And then Yue Qingyuan as usual took any opportunity he got to touch his Qingqiu.  So all shippers were fed. Hell, they even threw in some more straight-baiting again so peeps who are watching the show for the “straight” romance between Luo Binghe and his never-to-be-future-wife Qin Wanyue were fed too since the scene where Binghe gives her the handkerchief to wipe away her tears were not in the chapters of the book for this episode, and racking my brain I don’t even think it was in the book, period. I’m trying to remember if that handkerchief even holds any significance but even if it does, it’s all for naught since we know Qin Wanyue is at most just a minor side character. She does pop up again later on but then is mostly forgotten, so...not quite sure what that moment was all about other than to, I don’t know, throw off the censors?
I’m also not sure why we spent so much time with Liu Mingyan and Gongyi Xiao in this episode. Nothing against them personally, I like both characters very much (despite my previous complaints about GYX’s character design), and it’s not that they don’t deserve more screen time, but this was the season finale! Even though the next season has been announced, God knows when we’ll see it next year and how many episodes it would be, so every minute of screen time matters! That’s why I was a bit puzzled that they used up half of the episode showing LMY basically facing the same perils with her group of fellow disciples as before and GYX just running from that huge serpent. Even if that thing DOES turn out to be Zhuzhi-lang, it was still a bit much. They weren’t exactly character building scenes either so...why? Budget reasons? Didn’t have enough money to pay SQQ’s voice actor (Wu Lei-laoshi) so they had to stick in miscellaneous scenes to lessen his screen time?
I’m kidding of course. God I hope that wasn’t the reason because that would just be sad.
Speaking of miscellaneous scenes though, what was going on with these two dudes?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I gotta admit, I’m a bit salty that these two mob characters got to do what our main couple can’t. What’s their story? Why do they get special privileges? Damn these nobodies. XD
All kidding aside, I have to say, of all the episodes this season, this might be the weakest one, not only because of the “filler” scenes, but also, the way the episode ended was so odd, especially for a season finale. The season basically ended on a scene transition. Not a cliffhanger, just a scene transition, and then cut to credits. What?? Why??? It’s almost as if they just ran out of time so had to stop the show all of a sudden. And then as if to make up for it, they added post-credit scenes which, honestly blew me away because it was so unexpected. It was indeed almost enough to make me completely forgive the weakness of the episode as a whole and that weird-ass ending.
Tumblr media
I teared up!  The scene was kind of chopped up, didn’t even flow that smoothly, but I still got emotional! I’m sure when I see this scene in its entirety next season I am just going to be destroyed. I think they made it even more gut-wrenching than it was in the novel. Looks like the donghua team really aren’t gonna hold back when it comes to delivering the BingQiu knives.
We also got to see Mobei-jun appear in the post-credits scene; I guess they had to stick him in there since he was featured in the poster for this season, so it would have been weird if he didn’t at least make an appearance.
Tumblr media
I immediately thought of him as Sephiroth’s younger cousin when I first saw him on the poster and I still feel that way. Anyone related to Sephiroth, I will approve and instantly have affection for. For the MoShang shippers’ sake, I hope the Shang Qinghua they create for him will be just as pretty. I think I can now safely discard my guess from last time and also that moon-faced bearded ojisan others have guessed. We actually got a glimpse of the real deal in this sequence:
Tumblr media
They strategically made him blurry so you can’t really make out his features, but what we still can tell from there is that he does not have facial hair (hence, he cannot be the ojisan) and the hair crown he’s wearing is silver and different from the twinky sect leader. So I guess we’ll be getting a fresh out of the microwave Airplane Bro instead of any of the no-name potential cannon fodder we’ve already seen.
We’ll probably get the abyss opening up in maybe even the first episode of next season but that’ll still leave a lot of ground to be covered in just 10 episodes (rumored). There haven’t been any talk about a third season, but I really hope it’ll happen, even though it might take them a while to make it. I know it’s premature to even think of a third season when we haven’t even gotten an actual release date for the second, but I’m greedy because I already miss the donghua. This season was over so quickly, I’m already mourning the lack of new episodes. I hope we get the second season in the first quarter of next year and then by some miracle, a third or even fourth to properly finish out the story. I know we will never get the FULL story, but as long as they keep the spirit of BingQiu’s love and continue to hint at it like they’ve been doing this season, I will be more than satisfied.
And while I’m wishful thinking for new seasons, I hope we also get a BingQiu duet and character songs. I love the opening and ending theme this season, if they want to save money I totally don’t mind if they just use the same OP/ED themes in the next season as well, but I hope they throw in a good BingQiu insert song and then release some individual character songs as well. I’m still not a fan of Binghe’s voice, but maybe they can have someone else do his vocals for the songs. SVSSS is the older son of MXTX’s works, I feel like it already got short-shrifted in terms of adaptation since it got the lesser budget compared to MDZS and TGCF. Hopefully with how popular the donghua is this season, it will be given a bigger budget next season so they can bring to life all the subsequent proceedings from the book properly. And whatever they’re paying Wu Lei-laoshi, SQQ’s voice actor, they should double it because that man is just amazing. I worship his voice and performance. I wish he would read the audiobook version of the the novel. I would listen to the hell out of that.  I have always loved SQQ, but if I’m going to be honest, I came into the show just a little more excited about seeing Bingge being brought to life. I still love Binghe of course, in all his phases, however, now,  because of Wu Lei-laoshi’s stellar voice performance (and of course SQQ’s beautiful looks), I’m leaving this season absolutely head over heels about SQQ/Shen Yuan. Also thanks to the show, I’m completely obsessed with Liu Qingge as well.  So for those two reasons, I will eternally be grateful to the donghua team.

So sometimes I check wikis to like look things up about a show or series that I don’t have time to read or watch the whole thing fully cuz that’s a time investment I just don’t have but I have questions I just want a quick answer to.
The problem is, wikis are of course, made by like regular people with varying levels of biases and also sometimes selective memory of events. As can be seen in my more recent posts with SVSSS and MXTX’s works I’ve been on those wikis, but sometimes the explanations of plot points and a bunch of other stuff are really confusing and circular. SVSSS’s is being more cleaned up recently, but it still has some things that it says happened, that I couldn’t find at all when reading the book and I’m just like, where did they find that info to put on the wiki?
Like one of my earlier posts when I started reading SVSSS at the beginning, I mentioned how I read that original Luo Binghe got killed by his harem eventually and I thought that made sense cuz ultimately no one in that original plotline made choices that made them genuinely happy. But when I read the book, I didn’t see any mention of that anywhere...? I think last time I went to go look at BC Novels they had one chapter left to translate. Is it in there?
Then at other times, I wonder if there’s an inconsistency because there’s a limitation between the translation I read and like something in the original Chinese text like there’s a typo, which obviously there’s a mistake then. But then other times, I’m wondering if people read a different thing, but most of the people with a different interpretation don’t seem to be able to read Chinese and are reading the same translation as me, but I’m confused where they got certain details from?
Like for instance, there’s another part on the wiki where it says Airplane originally planned for PIDW to be a BL from the beginning, but I’ve literally been trying to find where that was stated because I don’t remember that and I don’t see that anywhere and the chapter citation that is listed on the wiki goes to a chapter that doesn’t talk about that at all. Airplane/Qinghua does say that he made changes to Qingqiu’s character that were originally more complex to make him a trash human and he did that to make a living, but I can’t find where it says he originally wanted it to be a BL theme to begin with. In the chapter they cite it says that Qinghua had designed Binghe to have an appearance in a way that appealed more to a female audience and be more of a pretty boy. That doesn’t mean that he meant his entire book to be a BL it just means you make your main character look a certain way partly for internal logic because that look is really popular with women so the in-story women would probably find him attractive and in a meta sense any females who happen to also read a stallion novel like some women read shounen manga would find him hot in real life. A successful story does things like that to reach people outside of its target audience and that’s kind of a lot of the reason why a lot of Shounen Jump manga are really popular with women too even though a lot of the stories have the male perspective in mind. The chapter it cites only talks about the actual physical appearance design choice he made for Binghe vs Mobei-Jun. He just says that Mobei-Jun was made for the kind of male character he prefers to think about, but Binghe was just designed with the idea of what would make him more popular and also could kind of be like a self-insert-ish for his desire to beat on people for funsies. It doesn’t talk at all about what the genre he planned for the book to be and interpreting the text to that much is really stretching the context to wishful thinking levels. I don’t even actually care either way what kind of novel PIDW was because it’s not actually that important to enjoying the story of SVSSS, but I don’t know if it’s the Ravenclaw in me or what, but it just bugs me when there’s something that seems *wrong* printed on a thing that is supposed to inform other people. I’m literally reading chapters at the same time as trying to write this post to find where I think maybe it was said, but it sure as hell wasn’t the chapter the wiki cites.
The other day I re-read the chapter when Qinghua taunts SY with Qingqiu’s real memories, and he doesn’t even say it then. ATM, I’m trying to look through the last chapter because there’s that one part when Qinghua shows up right at the end and talks with SY at the celebration, but even at the start at the chapter, SY talks about how Qingqiu was super straight to him. SY is an unreliable narrator, but given the context of Qingqiu’s life events that makes sense. His personal trauma because of Qiu Jianluo also pushed him away from any amount of closeness he could have with other men other than ones he already trusted to some degree. He had a lot of problems forming new relationships of any kind with other men because of deep-seated trust issues. Not that he didn’t have any, but meaningful ones were pretty absent. One only because of a very sad misunderstanding and lack of communication and explanation, but the others just tough.
But like also there’s like that SJ slept in the Warm Red Pavilion and he went there just for comfort rather than more lascivious reasons. Yeah, it’s true that he didn’t go there for those intentions, but like it’s still in the environment so it’s not like he’s unaware of what happens there. I mentioned it in the previous post about his search for means to grow his cultivation, but only to say he’s probably not that innocent and there may be some truth to him wanting to do something to Ning Yingying out of desperation to make up for his low cultivation foundation. Like he’s aware of those kinds of things and he probably came across something that said that was a way he could grow his cultivation. Desperation and this motivation I think is probably the only reason why he would be so tempted to cross that line with Yingying because he otherwise treats women rather well. She is his favorite too, so if a person who usually treats females well for some reason wants to do something that would be hurtful to their favorite person, there has to be a much deeper motivation behind that. The only thing that is a canonically greater obsession I think would have to be his cultivation level. He has a number of self-esteem issues and such a well, but his greatest pride and greatest concern is his cultivation. He is proud of his abilities, but also he laments and regrets the version of him he couldn’t become so much I can foresee that if there was a suggestion that he could overcome his late start in some way by using someone female, I think he’d at least think about it and also consider who he knows could be a viable candidate should he want to act on it and that is how that part of PIDW happened. Pain and desperation make people do things that are uncharacteristic, so it has to be something that really bothers him more than in a moment of weakness that idea is there.
Which is another point I have an issue with on the wiki because it says his low cultivation is “logically” because he started late and spent so much time with a fake master. It’s not logically. It’s factually. It’s mentioned several times especially in the extras chapters from Shen Jiu’s point of view where he talks about how he is specifically behind because of wasting time with Qiu Jianluo and Wu Yanzi and also that he was the last to form a golden core. If it was coming out of SY or someone else’s mouth as an explanation, maybe you can say “logically”, but if it’s coming from SJ’s point of view chapter it sure as hell is not. That *IS* his motivation. He states it himself.
Also, I think some people don’t understand what it means to have a low cultivation foundation. Cultivation from what I gather according to the rules of this world is like a lot of talents we have in our world where you need to start young to be good at it. There’s a few skills that you can learn that if you don’t start at a specific time you lose the optimal window to develop your talent for it because of the way the brain functions and basically purges off skillsets you’re not using in your environment.
Learning a language is one such skill. When a baby is born, it has the capability to learn how to speak every language in the world, but as it gets older its brain purges out the sounds that it doesn’t hear from its environment and this keeps going into older childhood as well. The taxi driver I talked to the other day about this said you have to start before you’re 10, which sounds about right. The phoneme purging in your brain starts quite early though so that’s why my company has classes for Moms and their 1 or 2 year old so that they can speak to them in English to try to keep English sounds in their environment so that they can have perfect pronunciation when they grow up. If you try to learn a new language when you’re older that’s how you have accents. You don’t have the phonemes to speak the language perfectly so your brain is imitating the sounds with the ones you do have. Plus it’s a constant use skill. I used to be able to speak Cantonese with no accent up until my teens, but I haven’t spoken it in so long that slowly I started to have an accent and now I can’t say the words properly anymore. I don’t know that much Cantonese to begin with that aren’t baby words, but I used to be able to say them properly.
Music is another one and that one has an even more narrow window. Kids with parents hoping that they will be music prodigies usually start them on music VERY young like 3 or 4. It’s not that it’s impossible for someone to pick up an instrument later in life, but there’s a type of sense to music and hearing the scale and developing that skill that if you don’t start kids on it at that time, their musical ear will not be as good.
And it’s that “not as good” thing that Qingqiu is chasing. He is exceptionally powerful and talented which is why despite starting late he became favored. He is very capable and good at what he does, but he is not as good as what he could have been. Even though he is so good, he is only haunted by how much better he would have been if he had started on time and had proper instruction. A musician who maybe wants to be a concert violinist but took up the instrument late may struggle to get a good seat in an orchestra because despite any talent they have, their ear is not as developed as someone else. Such a musician would be vexed and lament that they hadn’t discovered their love for the instrument sooner just as Qingqiu is vexed and laments that he didn’t start proper cultivation development earlier.
And I’m griping about SVSSS more because I read that book so I have more points of reference to go on. But like the wikis for MDZS and TGCF aren’t much better. MDZS is maybe a little more coherent and easier to follow, but TGCF confused the hell out of me and it took me awhile to understand what was going on. I really needed it though cuz I was watching the donghua and like I think the way they present some of the scenes is like slightly out of order for like foreshadowing and other like film reasons, so I checked the wiki while watching to try to get more context cuz I don’t have much time right now to pick up another book at the moment. I was so confused though cuz like...it seems like the logic in the entries is so circular and I’m trying to keep track of all the characters and what’s happening. I hope it’s better now but at the time I was watching it I was so confused and struggling to make sense of what’s happening.
And like maybe you’re wondering why if I read the book, would I bother checking a wiki. Mostly out of laziness because I’m thinking of something and I don’t want to go find the exact chapter to help me flesh out my thought and reference point. I end up getting more frustrated sometimes depending on what I’m looking up because of the above things.
Plus again I’m like a bit mystified as to why Qingqiu’s look seems to appeal to me. It’s not just him though and like other characters with a similar style in some of the games I play. I think there’s some imprint from some very old childhood memory that I only vaguely remember. Like it’s a look that seems familiar, but I can’t put my finger on where it’s from and I can’t figure it out, so I keep just going to check images to see if it will make me remember. I think it’s a movie I saw with my Dad as a young child, but I can’t remember it at all. I remember there was one Jet Li movie I watched with my Dad once and I ended up watching all the time cuz I thought Jet Li was really cute in that movie (I was also 3 so I don’t know why I’m thinking that way, but whatever), but like Jet Li was bald in that movie because it was about a Shaolin Temple. I think at the time my Dad showed me that movie I already showed an interest in movies from my own heritage, so that’s why he showed me that. But like I can’t remember anything else. I suppose it could have been something my grandpa watched because sometimes he’d watch a Chinese movie when I was playing in the living room and I’d stop to watch too and then he’d fast-forward through the intimacy scenes, but because I’d just look over at something he was already watching I have no idea what any of those were.

My Top 10 Kdramas
I was reading @overthinkingkdrama‘s list on her top 10 kdramas thus far and that got me thinking about mine. It’s been a while since I’ve evaluated my favourites and their ranking so thought it’d be interesting to check in. *frantically checks mydramalist completed list*
The problem is that after most dramas, I forget the characters and stories. There are many dramas that I have rated 10/10 right after having watched them many years ago but now I cannot remember what exactly I liked about them. There are some I remember because they’ve been rewatched multiple times. So do I include the ones that I’ve rewatched/are more recent that I remember or the ones from a couple of years ago which I remember enjoying but I’m not really sure why?
Let's start with notable mentions. These are rated 10/10 by me but I couldn’t fit all of them on the list so .....
Notable mention 1: Dear My Friends
Tumblr media
Somewhere after the saeguk phase and before the crime thrillers phase, I was in a slice-of-life phase of kdrama watching. I picked this up during then. There aren't many stories that are focused on the lives of older people. They aren't that well represented in dramaland apart from the sweet/mean grandparents. This was such a heart-warming drama that made me laugh and cry. It was slow paced and probably boring for some but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the friendships and the relationships between the characters. Their stories were so touching and heartbreaking at times. This drama was very realistic, calming and meaningful. I definitely want to give this a rewatch some time in the future.
Notable mention 2: Tree With Deep Roots
Tumblr media
A couple of years ago I went through the saeguk phase. I think a particular mindset is needed to watch a saeguk (or 10). You know it's going to be heavy, with multiple characters and intrinsic details. There won't be many fast forwarding opportunities without missing key plot points. This probably explains why I haven't picked up a saeguk in recent years - I cannot commit to it. This show is far from the romance genre, it is a saeguk about Hangul. I remember it being an incredible story with brilliant characters and mix of fiction and history. And with 24 episodes, never once did it get boring. What a performance by Han Seok Kyu! Jang Hyuk and Shin Se Kyung did a wonderful job too, plus there a short performance by Song Joong Ki. Time for a rewatch?
Notable mention 3: The Princess’ Man
Tumblr media
What I vividly remember is me crying whilst watching this drama. I shed too many tears. Too many. The story can be compared to Romeo and Juliet - two people who fall in love in spite of their family's bitter rivalry. I remember it being well written with a balance of romance, drama, action, suspense, friendship, betrayal, war, politics and revenge (the usual mix really). Probably the best work I have seen of Park Si Hoo and Moon Chae Won. They did brilliantly individually and also together. Great chemistry. I wish I remembered more. Writing this list will tempt me to rewatch all of these. Cannot recall specific songs from the OST but I think I have a few in my Spotify Korean OST list.
Notable mention 4: You Who Came From The Stars
Tumblr media
I think I am the most upset about this not being in the top 10. The reason for it not being in the top 10 is because I did rewatch it a year or two ago and it wasn’t as enjoyable as the first time.
Shall we start right at the beginning, with the intro. I loved that intro and despite being a serial fast forwarder, I made sure to watch it at the beginning of every episode. This was the first show where I thought the female lead was relatable. Jun Ji Hyun was vulnerable, sweet, goofy, not the smartest in the room and she made Song Yi so real to me. I loved her more than Kim Soo Hyun in this show. I loved the internal/external monologues she would have with herself. As a couple, they had incredible chemistry and remain to be one of my favourite on-screen couples. The story was complete and flowed well. I liked the second male lead and the side characters too. 'My Destiny' by Lyn is still one of my most memorable and most listened to OST. I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy it the second time. Writing this is tempting me to rewatch this gem.
Notable mention 5: Her Private Life
Tumblr media
I have to agree with Deok Mi: Kim Jae Wook is so annoyingly beautiful.
The female character was particularly relatable to me. I am a fan girl (not to the extent of the character) and a life outside where people don't really know the extent of my fangirlness. This has to be my favourite (truly) rom-com. There are so many things that I loved here, but what made the drama that enjoying were definitely our main leads Sung Deok Mi and Ryan Gold. Park Min Young and Kim Jae Wook's chemistry was so natural. I loved how mature their relationship was - they sorted out all misunderstandings quickly and acted like adults. There was no pointless drama. The leads tried to understand each other and also give the other space. Ryan Gold seems like the ultimate male lead, he has raised those standards even higher. Side note to appreciate Deok Mi's wardrobe. Those pant suits were gorgeous - I wish I could pull them off. I guess there was a lack of real obstacles and conflict. But I liked that for a change.
10. Queen In Hyun’s Man
Tumblr media
The premise was interesting and story was executed really well. A truly romantic drama. The mix of old and modern world was done so well. Yoo In Na and Ji Hyun Woo are absolutely adorable together. Love this show.
9. Bridal Mask
Tumblr media
GAKSITAL! I was raving about this drama to everyone who would listen to me. I think this drama is a masterpiece. The amazing storyline with complex characters, excellent actors, epic cliffhangers, and breathtaking music (that loud/epic tune still rings in my head). The storyline was engaging and each episode always left me wanting more. The story is unique and I love how it explores a different part of history. The friendship and conflict between the two male leads Kangto and Shunji is the heart of this show.
8. Rooftop Prince
Tumblr media
Every time I think about this show, I'm reminded of the comedic and quirky scenes of the characters adjusting to the modern world (post time travel obviously). I like how the stories in the old and modern world are integrated. There is a shift from romantic, light hearted comedy to sad and melodramatic later in the show. The sad scenes were truly heartbreaking. Enjoyable watch, great acting, wonderful OSTs that I still listen to!
7. My Wife is Having an Affair This Week
Tumblr media
Another slice of life drama. I loved how the show explored marriage, relationships, cheating and divorce. It was only 12 episodes so didn't drag at all. The characters are so complex and human and the story is so beautifully written. Song Ji Hyo and Lee Seon Gyun are amazing as the leads, portraying every emotion of a struggling couple from start to finish. You need to go in with an open mind to watch this show.
6. 49 Days
Tumblr media
Everyone has that one show, which isn't brilliant but somehow touched your heart and you love it despite its flaws. This is mine. 49 Days has a unique story and I knew I was going to be crying as I come to love these characters. I did cry, lots. I cried each time I rewatched it. I cried because it was sad and it made me so frustrated that life was so unfair to these characters and they're not going to get the happy ending that they deserve... The writer stayed true to their vision. It wasn't all rainbows and balloons at the end with loopholes to give each character their happy ending. I think I love this show because it really pains me to watch these characters and their lives. I really came to love Jung Il Woo and Lee Yo Won. LOVE the OST.
5. Signal
Tumblr media
What a story! And the execution of that story. Amazing from start to finish. I can still hear the sound of the walkie-talkies in my head. One of the best crime thrillers I have seen. Cases were well paced. The mystery would leave me at the edge of my seat every time. A couple of the cases were REAL cases, which was terrifying but brilliant. The music was mellow and fit the scenes so well. This show and the ones below were truly an experience. Loved the actors and the acting.
4. Father is Strange
Tumblr media
Ah another phase of my - the family drama/soaps phase. After seeing a couple, I didn't go into this show with high expectations. It has the typical family drama elements: illegitimate son/birth secrets, sick family member, horrible in-laws, evil side character/bully. What made it stand out from the other shows was how the characters dealt with these issues. It wasn't the same as previous shows, the characters were more mature and real and dealt with these issues in a more progressive and refreshing way. The show also touched on issues including parenting, bullying, marriage, career vs pregnancy and societal pressure. I was so invested in everyone's stories and arcs. Lee Yoo Ri though. My favourite character, she made the show for me.
3. Reply 1988
Tumblr media
This is such a nostalgic, true-to-life trip from start to finish.  Reply 1988 exceeded my expectations, after Reply 1997 it was hard not to. What made it stand out from the previous Reply series was the focus on family and friendship instead of the romance. This meant we got to know EACH and every character and feel what they were feeling. The story isn’t fast paced with big ups and downs. It depicts the true day-to-day life, which made it feel even more real. I didn’t expect to cry as much as I did in this drama. And it wasn’t because someone was dying. They were the small acts, unsaid things that truly touched my heart. Junghwan’s and Jung bong’s terrace scene watching stars, Jung bong in the hospital, Bora leaving to go to the hostel, Dong ryong wanted to spend time with his mum, Sun woo’s wedding invitation to Taek’s dad, Bora and Bora’s Dads letters to each other, etc etc. I truly felt like a part of the Ssangmungdong community. Even though I didn’t enjoy the ending, this would be one of my favourite dramas ever. The length of the episodes and the ending has stopped me from rewatching it but every once in a while, I think about how beautiful this drama was.
Also, as an epilogue to the show, everybody should watch Youth Over Flowers: Africa.
Tumblr media
2. Healer
Tumblr media
Ji Chang Wook. That's it. Do we need to say anything else. Solid romance, great story, brilliant action scenes, gripping, wonderful OST, good acting and JI CHANG WOOK. Love this show. Ji Chang Wook. Watch it for him.
1. Age of Youth
Tumblr media
This is such a precious show. I have rewatched it and am planning to watch it again for the nth time. This show really defines slice-of-life. I am sure everyone watching this drama could relate to one of the girls or even just a situation faced by the girls. I was able to relate to different situations and aspects of many of the girls personally and also have seen other friends/family facing similar situations. I was really glad that the plot focused on the girls the most and not the boys. It didn't take a detour. It was consistent. This show touched my heart in the way no other show probably will (for now atleast). The relationships were realistic. The casting was perfect - Age of Youth 2 was great but changing the actor changed the dynamic for me. The music was beautiful - I still loop 'Butterfly' by Sogyumo Acacia Band. I have no complaints or flaws for this show apart from it being too short.
Just realised I've left Forest of Secrets/Stranger out of this list. EURGH let's add that in somewhere.
Tumblr media
If Be Melodramatic carries on the way it doing, it's going to be in my top 10.

Hey, how ya doing? I was wondering what your headcanons are for Joker's parents, considering they never contact him. And also if it was you, how would you rewrite Akechi's story arc? Sorry if you talked about these already, I couldn't find anything.
@bakahimesama oh hi!  I’m good! :)
I haven’t actually posted much of my own content about persona 5 because i wasn’t on tumblr when i played it!  (I took a year off tumblr back then lol).
TBH I don’t find the question of Joker’s parents one that is very compelling to answer--since they feature, literally almost not at all (it feels like p4 protag gets more detail than even Joker, even though his stuff is barebones too), I feel like the only option is for them to be, basically, totally absent.  They somehow raised a son who has a strong sense of morality and justice, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything about them, especially when he was kicked out from being with them.  And thusly, I see them as sort of boring empty people that don’t *really* care about their son and would rather he not be troublesome.  But they aren’t so controlling as to stop him from doing what he wants to do, but when he’s an embarrassment they will send him away.  But they don’t contact him to berate or check on him, so once again, I don’t think they *really* care.
I enjoy the au some people have worked with, with Tatsuya and Jun from p2 being his parents, but I would work with that concept very differently from how I’ve seen it done (tho I haven’t checked in on those for awhile, interest kinda died).
And if I were writing about Akechi, I don’t actually think there’s much I would change.  I suppose I would alter the whole part of p5 in general where it’s revealed that the PTs knew the whole time about him, I would just tweak that, make it happen a little later and a little less literal forced dramatic irony.  I knew the instant it happened that Akechi could hear Morgana, but I know not every player realized that, so I’m not sure if I would change that bit of foreshadowing or not--but I would at least make it so that the PTs didn’t notice, not at that part.
I also didn’t want Akechi to be the traitor while playing, it was too obvious (both from the previous foreshadowing, his role in the story, AND his gameplay abilities--he’s way too overpowered to keep lmao).  I actually REALLY wanted the traitor to be Haru--because her character felt too simple lmao.  And if that were the case, Akechi gets a little more messy, because he wouldn’t be on their side either, but he wouldn’t have been perhaps exactly the traitor--or maybe both he and Haru would be, I’m not sure.  But.  I’m not sure what I would actually change.  I like most of how p5 functions (and criticism for me honestly often goes towards the translation b/c some aspects are clearer in japanese context).  I guess part of my satisfaction with him comes from the fact that he made me do a lot of research on bastard children in Japan and what the foster care system is like, and with that context and a few other things, he becomes very easy to understand.  To me, at least.  So I actually end up quite pleased with him.
lkjlkfsd this is really rambly and not very interesting I’m afraid.  I haven’t actually written anything about p5 and im not super inspired to.
Akeddi notwithstanding.

*SPOILERS* CYZJ Subbed Ep. 9 reaction
Episode 9 is finally out with subs, so you know what that means: another play-by-play reaction text post! And it’s another 2-hour episode, so we’re back to the super long format.
As with previous installments, each major section of the show has a header so you can scroll if you’re looking for something specific. And, of course, spoilers and foul language kinda come with the territory.
Mission reveal and song assignments
Another two performance mission assignment – picking the third finalist pair and then establishing a ranking for the finalists – because they just gotta be ranked going into the finals *rolls eyes* - I could rant about how much I wish the producers would stop pushing the competitive aspect of the show while talking about it being about “breakthroughs”
Hao’s little goddamnit-esque laugh when the 1v1 mission is announced  :/
Anybody else get the feeling Victor’s the reason Eric & JC are worried about the other team picking their song? Like Hao might give them something out of left field because he wants them to show a new side or because he thinks it suits them, but not to torpedo them – Victor, however, seems a bit of a wild card
…! I seriously thought Eric had the card down the front of his pants for a moment there!
Aw, Hao’s smile is so sweet – I already knew Eric/JC got to do one of Eric’s songs – that little “you’re welcome” bow & Victor being totally checked out makes me think that was all Hao’s doing
So, yes & no – I expected Victor to at least playfully push to mess w/ the other team – he seems kinda disengaged though
Wait, is that Hao’s handwriting?! I was admiring it when Eric first revealed the card – I know people who only know English who don’t write that nicely – kid’s definitely an artist
“How can I not be satisfied with my own song?”  XD
Aw, that was really sweet of Victor to say he hopes they don’t mess w/ the song too much
I love that when Victor asks “by who” Eric & Xiao Wu both go “Drake” w/ a very soft “duh, who the fuck else” feel – and then Hao gets stoked when they start singing it
Yes! I’m so glad Jiacheng said that about Hao & Victor’s performances not being them together! I thought it about the last 2 performances, but since I didn’t really see anyone else talk about it, I wondered if it was just me. Plus there’s the whole cultural disconnect & not being part of the target demographic that added to it. It’s good to see someone who’s in the thick of it with them recognize that same thing
I want to talk about the warm fuzzy feelings I get from Eric & Jiacheng being so thoughtful about their choice and how this reinforces my desire for the show to stop leaning into the competition narrative, but Eric mimicking both Hao & Victor is too cute
I love that Jiacheng doesn’t know how to process Eric’s goofiness for a second – same Xiao Wu, same
Aw, the doodles!
Hao’s “don’t say anything” is great! – take a stand & make Victor dance!
“Okay fine, alright, I’ll dance. I’ll dance” – damn straight!
Second mission reveal
“Sprint Out” Attack? And that means…?
Meh… Another drawn out process to pick a collaborator? - it was cute w/ the ladies but since I haven’t seen anyone talking about the guests and the tease at the beginning of the episode was blah, I’m not really looking forward to it
Trying to ignore the elevator talk and not roll my eyes too hard
Meeting the musicians
Oh dear god, Yanan is so fucking cute watching Liron Man play! – tell me someone’s giffed that doofy expression and weird little wiggle! *heart eyes*
Ooh, Liron Man’s got a great smile – has nothing to do w/ anything but I couldn’t leave it unremarked upon
“The sound produced is very cute […] like a tortoise who lost its soul” – say what now, Yanan?! – that does not seem like a “cute” sound, sir!
Once again, being thoughtful and aware of the other contestants – brownie points to Jun
I’m so glad dude knows some Chinese! We don’t need another person stranded behind the language barrier even if it’s just one episode
Apparently, I love the pipa and didn’t even know what it was – now that I have a name, research will be done!
“My mother’s profession is also in the pipa” – poor girl stepped in it!  XD
Here I was thinking they reacted much better than with the previous lady guests, but no, still shy as fuck
I realize that as an apparently internationally-recognized musician, Wangtao probably plays the clarinet in ways that I never could imagine – unfortunately I took band from 7th through 9th grades, including marching band, so I cringed when I saw what he plays – and I immediately had to go look up this Eddie Izzard bit because my brain wouldn’t stop going “clahr-en-ahrt” and “WEzul WEzul” until I did
Watching Jun & Yanan discuss their options is a really interesting look into their personalities – “are we choosing calm or movement?”
“You decide” – brave words, Jun – I wonder where this fell on the timeline of Yanan deciding to leave the show
It’s not going to be a famous Western artist, Samuel – it’s never going to be a famous Western artist – sorry to burst your bubble, kiddo
Bahahaha! For all Zhennan’s “leave us a good one” in the elevator, Jun & Yanan picked the most obvious choice for the kiddies – …yes, I know I’m an asshole for finding that so funny
…Does Zhennan’s shirt say “same shit different day”?!
They completely lost that whole “working w/ musicians will be hard” thing real quick
“I feel like I tortured little kids”  XD
Someone’s setting himself up for a headache confusing jazz with jazzy, especially when picking a classically trained accompanist
It’s really cute seeing Eric & Xiao Wu being a little awkward with the pipa player after they seemed to calm with the previous female guests – they both barely look at her
I love arrogant!Eric, especially when he’s immediately replaced by embarrassed!Eric – I am, however, more than a little creeped out by the cartoon bull being blown around by, what, an umbilical cord?!
Aw, Jiacheng immediately defends his “arrogance” *heart eyes*
Wait, did Xiao Wu’s lyrics sound bad? Eric said it could “be a little better” so maybe the phrasing was awkward, but the translation of “lately, I’ve been scared of sleeping alone” grabbed my attention and made me wonder what prompted those words
They’re dorks and I love them
Poor Hao being left to talk to their musician alone
…! I totally blanked that this could be Minghao’s first chance to really do a traditional Chinese sound – aw, yay!
Hmm, Victor really agreed to do purely traditional? I guess “purely Chinese” doesn’t have to mean traditional instead of modern
And then we flash back and I stand corrected!
Performance day
Wait, they’re not gonna show how they chose the performance order between MH/Victor and Eric/JC?! I feel so cheated! thank god
Minghao & Victor are up first – 1v1
“I’m always ready!” *heart eyes*
Hao accidentally proposed confessing to the other contestants  XD – just because you think something is meaningless doesn’t mean it really is!
What’s cuter: Hao’s reaction when he realized putting in the other contestants’ names wasn’t the best idea or Hao’s reaction to the thought of name-dropping exes?
I love MH’s logic! Victor’s trying to downplay any romantic intention behind calling out a female artist by saying it’s about respect & admiration, so Hao throws out Jony J & Gong Ge - if it’s about respect & admiration he’s not wrong, but Victor’s face says otherwise – I laughed so hard I had to stop the video and go calm down by doing a load of laundry
I’ve gotta say, as someone who liked both JJ & GG from the beginning & still really likes them and as someone who started watching specifically for Minghao, I love that he brought them up again and in such a positive light. Fans can – and do – hate on them, but he’s got every right to continue to look up to them. He’s the one who was directly affected by their actions, yet he continues to admire them and voice that admiration. I don’t get how people try to drag them on his behalf when he says things like this.
Aw, it breaks my heart a little that Victor thinks making the song about the show is “limiting” their creativity – Hao’s had a lot of fun and had made connections on the show that he obviously values – how is making an ode to that a limitation?
I love when Hao speaks in English – it always surprises me how rich & deep his voice is – like I usually chalk it up to being an artifact of the language, but it’s genuinely appealing – does that make sense? Just me?
Am I the only one who thinks changing the names to their own makes it about self-doubt, not narcissism?
Victor’s so American!
I feel like Victor having to dance is a little bit of karma for being a pain in the ass  >:D
That little intro clip is adorable!
Aw, Victor did MH’s 8 hand sign!
Overall thoughts: I loved that! It wasn’t perfect, but I think, after Clap, it was Hao’s best performance by far. He definitely had fun and loosened up with Supernatural in ep.8, but this was a whole other level and I think a lot of it was from actually playing w/ Victor during the performance. I love that they switched it up and Victor had the vocal parts; he’s a talented singer so it was nice seeing him step out of the rapper role. And I was really impressed with Hao’s English. A lot of times, non-English-speakers do odd things with their emphasis on words, but he was pretty damn spot on. It makes me wonder just how fluent he actually is since we don’t see him speak it much beyond simple phrases. The one thing I wasn’t entirely feeling was Victor’s rap. It felt a little rushed? Cramped? It’s understandable since he’s working within a pre-existing song, but it did stick out to me. I don’t know why Victor was worried about dancing. That bit was less choreography and more conscious swagger, if that makes sense, and he pulled it off swimmingly. I wish they hadn’t cut to the audience during Hao’s dance break because it was my favorite one he’s done so far – less artistry and more simple fun. Can we take a moment to thank Eric & Jiacheng for making this gem happen?
“And we were constantly laughing at Victor’s attempt at dancing” – Eric! I’m glad he finally has someone else’s dancing to pick on but also smh
Eric & Jiacheng’s 1v1 prep and performance
Aw, Jiacheng gushing about the comradery on the show and wanting to help each other show their best sides  XD
The idea of them singing acapella is actually really cool – if anyone on the show could pull it off really well, it’s these two
I love that Xiao Wu seems to throw out more English the longer he’s w/ Eric – he’s gaining experience and confidence in other areas – why not English, too?
Back to Eric’s crush on Dilireba  XD
Aw, JC says they got close – of course they’re (probably) going to in a situation like this, but it’s cute that he’s talking about it – I know I’ve said it before, but I love that he’s so open with talking about stuff like that
Xiao Wu really looks like he’s about to cry reading those comments – and then Eric ruins the moment telling him not to cry
I already saw @bathtubofdonuts’s post talking about them incorporating the fan comments in the stage but seeing them get to that point is so sweet
Wait, so why is it important to tell us the screenwriter lady is in the audience? Was it the OST for her drama?
Aw, Hao’s so touched already
I was starting to worry the editing was going to lose the comments to those close-ups
It’s not weird to comment on how pretty Jiacheng’s hands are, right?
Wah! JC’s teary-eyed!! I was already tearing up – don’t make me cry!
Ah, okay, so she helped Eric write the song
Overall thoughts: I was sniffly & teary, but I managed not to cry. That was beautiful. This is why I was worried when they were talking about making a more impressive set design in ep. 8. They do simple so, so well, and they really don’t need a bunch of extras. Just having that one element of the comments playing behind them was so gorgeous and impactful. I’m really glad that they didn’t have accompanists on stage with them because they’d just be a visual distraction. I know I’ve talked about it in previous reactions, but the combination of their voices is incredible. I doubt Eric has ever sung a sour note in his life, and I wish Jiacheng knew how gorgeous his voice really is. His little power vocal moment toward the end? Ugh! So good! I’m gonna keep saying how happy I am that they got to work together because of this show.
“I feel that this bundle here is trembling” – I’m going to be so sad not to see this sweet kid after the show ends! TnT
1v1 performance results
Nooo! I know what’s about to happen – I’m not ready for the angst!
Poor Jun looking so nervous over there w/o Yanan
I hate this fucking setup so much. I’ve said that I think the way Jony J left the show was probably at least partially prompted by the production staff. Knowing that Jun was given options after Yanan left and that, for all his extraness, Jun is super shy, I have a hard time believing the production staff didn’t go, “So you don’t want to be in the running anymore and ~play by the rules~? Okay, so how about we make it look like there’s gonna be an elimination then you come out and dramatically withdraw? Wouldn’t that be awesome!” Jun’s never been my favorite because his playfulness can come of really childish to me, but I highly doubt he would put Minghao this scenario again for funsies.
Having seen translations of this weeks ago when the episode aired, I was not prepared to tear up. It hurts to see Hao so freaked out again and try to pull Jun back bodily. And seeing the distress on Jiacheng’s face as he says “no!” at him, my breath caught in my throat. Ugh! I’m seriously starting to cry watching JC panic more as Jun compliments them all. X(
Oh god that whole bit after the interview section was… weird. It’s pretty obvious the way Eric & Jiacheng are smiling in the background that things were cleared up. But that audience reaction… It’s so cold? This weird sort of idea that idols “betray” their fans is something I’ll never understand in kpop. (This is taking into account all the chaos that happened because of Jun’s decision, not just what made the edit.) Disappointment I get, but there’s no compassion for the grace he displayed in a shitty situation or relief that he’s going to continue performing. This whole situation was made so much worse being in front of a live audience.
The interviews after Jun’s reveal are so sweet, but why does it feel like a memorial? It’s just shy of saying “in loving memory of Wen Junhui”
Top 3 ranking performances
I love when the show has to blur someone’s phone because it’s not the sponsor phone – it’s usually Samuel, but this time Eric’s the culprit
And there’s the performance order ceremony
Minghao, Victor & Lian Pieru (pipa) are up first
Interesting thoughts about the Mechanical Era – it seems like Peiru’s a good match for Hao
So the interview thing is the only lead up we get? I don’t want to episode to be 3 hours, but they’ve got such an interesting story they want to tell and Peiru seems like such a character, I was really looking forward to the preparations – now I do actually feel a little cheated
Overall thoughts: I may have actually liked this performance better than In My Feelings. It wasn’t as entertaining, but it was a cool concept that was executed really well. I’ve gotta say before I go on though, I’ve seen people complain about the editing of other performances, but this is the first one that’s been distracting to me throughout.  :/  If I didn’t know before going in that Victor was supposed to be the narrator, I don’t think I would’ve gotten that. The harsh stage whisper sort of effect in the beginning comes off kind of judgmental and, well, harsh where I was expecting more of an impartial observer style narrator. I wish his character had either done less interacting (to be an observer) or done more (to show his investment in the storyline and justify the judginess). It was a nice change of pace to see him being subdued while Hao was the higher energy partner. Hao’s rap in both performances this episode was great. They felt more natural and less stylized, which I really dig. He also showed his vocals more here than I think he really has in a while. At least it was more impactful than past performance. I would love to see a purely vocal song from him – no rap, light choreo – because he does really interesting things with his voice and we don’t get enough of it. [I just got a flash of him singing w/ Susu O.O] The choreo was impressive even if the edit made it hard to get the full effect. The end was great with the angry faces and the final little trill of the pipa.
It weirdly warms my heart to see them acknowledge they’ve been kind of at odds in their partnership up til now
Eric, Jiacheng & Lian Peiru (pipa) perform second
Uh, does Jiacheng’s overcoat have Donald Duck smack in the middle of a traditional tapestry?!
Not gonna gush about the VCR, but these two are so damn cute
We don’t even get an interview lead-in for them?!  >.<
Ooh, pop-style pipa is really cool…
Somebody put Xiao Wu in a musical please - even my theatre-hating ass would pay to see that
Aw, Liron Man reacting to them  uwu
Overall thoughts: I really enjoyed that. It was soft and sweet, and of course their voices are amazing. The set design was really pretty with all the florals. For some reason, thought, for most of the song Eric seemed strangely pulled back? Maybe it was because Xiao Wu was still on a high from the previous performance and the pipa is so distinct, but his parts just got overpowered to my ear. It was still beautiful.
Huh, Samuel really hasn’t gotten much screentime in this episode, even for reactions
Zhennan, Samuel & Wangtao (clarinet) are up third
Maybe it’s because he’s a good bit older, but I really appreciate the way Wangtao talks about Zhennan here – at least I assume he’s referring to Zhennan since Samuel seems pretty cool with being a kid – it doesn’t soften me to him, but it’s a needed reminder that his bravado may be more façade than arrogance – still find it annoying though *shrug*
Anyone else have to look up what an elaphure is? – it’s a Père David’s deer
Excuse me, mister clarinet man, don’t make me start thinking clarinets are sexy – I’ve already resigned myself to the fact that I’m probably gonna look up your music but that’s just taking it too far!
Overall thoughts: For anyone who thinks I’m just going to shit all over this because it’s Zhennan and Samuel, you’re wrong. I actually kind of dug that. It’s not really my bag, but I don’t dislike it at all. First off, the stage design is impressive with that cube setup. It’s really interesting having Wangtao on top of it (but also, get off the tall thing!). I would love to see a fixed cam of the performance to get the full effect. I really liked Zhennan’s solo in ep. 2, so seeing him go back to that sleepy, almost lazy delivery style is really nice. I’ve complained about him leaning too hard into his imagery (or did I cut that bit because I was being an ass?), but it was used beautifully here. Samuel really impressed me. His rap style still sounds a little like he’s trying to be someone else, but it didn’t sound awkward this time. It’ll be really interesting to see where his style goes as he comes into his own. And these are his best lyrics yet. Yes, I snorted at the LeBron reference in the otherwise whimsical song, but I really liked the honestly and depth. The dance break was beautiful and a nice escape from the more stock mainstream choreo Samuel’s been showing us. He does hip hop well, but I’m glad he gave us something more contemporary here and showed off his range. If I have a complaint it’s that Samuel’s voice gets lost in the “I don’t want” bits. I wish they’d at least brought him forward so you hear him more, or better yet, given him something a little more ornate to weave around Zhennan’s more drudging sound. His little vocalization before ZN’s final part was a pleasant surprise, and I would’ve liked more of that. They’ve made the best use of the accompanist so far, too. The whole thing was lovely and haunting and understated. Of all their stages, I think this performance has been the most effective in delivering the message they wanted to get across.
Jun & Liron Man (handpans) are up last
Why are the lead-ups getting shorter?! We’re going straight into the performance with no interview or VCR. I get that he’s not eligible for votes anymore, but I still want to see something, man
Total Pure Moods vibes here – fun fact: I wanted that CD so badly that both of my (divorced) parents got it for me for Christmas that year – I was a weird kid
Aw, is he singing along with Jun?! So cute! *heart eyes*
…off the tall thing, please…
Overall thoughts: If you’d told me before this that I would eagerly watch a Jun solo three times in a row, I would’ve laughed in your face. His style just isn’t for me usually. And yet, I watched this three times in a row (I zoned out and just listened to first time, watched the second, and read the lyrics the third). Thank you, Yanan, for picking the handpan. I never would’ve thought the distorted ring of a handpan would complement Jun’s very unique vocal quality as well as it does. This is the most at ease we’ve seen Jun on the show, and I don’t mean relaxed or confident. It didn’t seem at all like he was performing or was “on” but like he was singing for the sheer personal pleasure of it. After his stress in previous episodes, it was so good to see. As for the song itself, I have no fucking clue how to describe it. It reminded me of the weirdest things without really sounding like any of them. I mentioned Pure Moods, but also The Little Mermaid and “What Is Love” – as in the song from A Night at the Roxbury (listen to it, young’uns, and be confused). There were others, but I’ve blanked because that last one was a little too wtf.
“He was definitely enjoying it, really” – you know it’s true when the guest is saying it
Wait, no contestant reactions even?! Why are we getting robbed of the good stuff in this episode, goddamnit!?
Points reveal for the finals
This is for the ranking going into the finale – plus starting points which seems weirdly unnecessary?
Hao & Victor got 66 votes – why so low?
Xiao Wu & Eric got 73 – better but still really low considering the stages & past scores
Zhennan & Samuel got 72 – why so low?!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad my boys are leading, but they all gave incredibly good, polished stages and those scores really don’t seem to reflect that. I mean, they’ve given out 80s before – are the panelists given criteria or is it purely a matter of preference? – the contestants all look a little disappointed with the scores, too
After show nonsense
“passionate teens Zhou Zhennan and Samuel, gentle warriors Wu Jiacheng and Zhou Xingzhe, mood players Xu Minghao and Ma Boqian” – I don’t know why those labels amuse me so much but they do
I’m glad we get to see Samuel & ZN react to the handpans because they were so cute with the other instruments
Damn, Samuel really is a quick learner
Did he mean to play Eric’s song? He’s definitely got a bit of an artist crush on Eric, but that’s adorable if he was trying to play it. And impressive that he did it well enough on something he just learned how to get a sound from that the others recognized it!
  My personal rankings
MH & Victor
Jun
Eric & Xiao Wu
Zhennan & Samuel
Usually picking my rankings is super easy. My favorite and least favorite have been leagues away from the others, but I really liked everybody this week  :D
And now, another long wait until the subs come out for the finale...

Welcome to our income reports where we share ways we’ve been making money through the , the challenges and lessons we learned each month, and finally to celebrate successes however big or small. Though we have a few side hustles, we’re happy to say that the travel has become our main hustle.
Life Updates
We spent most of February with family in Atlanta before moving. I got sick with bronchitis and still haven’t recovered. We added a new car to our fam that’s perfect for our new adventures (will post about that soon). And on my birthday, we drove cross-country to Las Vegas, where we’ll be living for the next year!

Why We Share Our Income Reports
If you’re new here, you might be wondering why on earth we would share something so personal. We’ve been hesitant to share our income reports for the last 5 years, and we’re super nervous about this post, but since we’re all about trial and error, let’s see how it goes! We’re putting out these income reports for these following reasons.
To Show You How We Make Income Blogging
We always want to be 100% transparent about how we make money through this . The amazing thing about the ging world is that every we’ve talked to does things a bit differently. There are also countless ways to grow and improve your business. When we started, we made most of our money through affiliate sales. Since then, we’ve shifted heavily to sponsored content. A big part of this is because my background is in sales and it’s what I’m good at. You can learn more about my sale method below. As time goes on, this will continue to change, but we want to share how we focus on our strengths to effectively meet our goals.
To Show You the Potential of Blogging
Whether you have a or are starting a , we want to show you that you can make a career out of ging.
Even if you don’t want to , there are a ton of ways to be financially and location independent and we hope to inspire others to go after it too. If you want to keep your day job, ging can be a great way for you to make some extra side money.
Esther started the 6 years ago and I joined her full time 3 years ago. Even until last year, our parents were worried about us financially, wondering when we would stop “playing” and start taking our lives and work more seriously. Neither of us ended up being “good Asians” (namely a doctor, lawyer, or engineer). It’s an unconventional job and where most people don’t understand all the work that goes on behind the scenes.

We love that our jobs give us flexibility in what we do, but being your own boss isn’t all that it’s cut out to be either. You have to be disciplined and work hard at your business to grow it.
To Track How We're Doing
I’ve always loved sharing goals online and tracking them. Putting them out in the world (via the ) has helped me so much with accountability. Since we’re constantly tweaking trying to improve the , looking at these numbers will help us learn whether we’ve been making the right changes. It’s amazing to see how the sources of income have changed over time and to see where we still have room for improvement.
Ultimately, our life goal is to make enough to live on half our income (right now we’re at 30%), where the rest will go back into the community or support organizations we love.

What's Working on the Blog
We switched our ad manager from Adthrive to Mediavine, since we wanted to see if they had a better payout. Overall, it has had its up and downs but the numbers started to steady by the end of the month. Hopefully, we made the right choice, but we’ll keep you updated.
Instead of working on new posts, we spent time refreshing our old spring content. We’ve already started to see those posts start to trend again and will keep an eye on them in March.
I wish we had more updates on new things we tried last month, but between being with family and being sick, February wasn’t all that productive work-wise.
What Didn't Work + Lessons Learned
Switching from AdThrive to Mediavine had a few hiccups. Based on how our site was built, we had to update a few posts and make changes. With the switch, we also lost google analytics data for 4 days so the numbers above are lower.

How to Work with Sponsors
The e-course is out! Are you a content creator and want to learn how to work with brands?
We used to do many one-off partnerships with brands, but over the years we’ve been focused on longer term partnerships. Most our brand sponsorships are over $20k, and one of our most recent ones was over $35k.
With over 10 years of trial and error working in corporate and managing our first business, Jacob has figured out the best ways to pitch and work with brands.
At first we were reluctant to put out just another e-course in this oversaturated, dog-eat-dog market, but we’ve seen our coaching and course actually help people quit their jobs and start their own businesses. How cool is that? Plus, all our students who have put our course to action have made their money back within the month, and one of our students using the e-course has already booked $11k in sponsorships. So effin’ excited to see them conquer this new chapter in their lives. If you’re interested to learn more, see the intro video here.

After visiting Sydney and Canberra the previous year, the itch to return to Australia was permanent and strong (and admittedly, still present). The many, many times I had heard “oh, so you liked Sydney? No. Try Melbourne.” were quick to convince, especially when a bout of it came from some good high school friends who are living and studying there.
Tumblr media
The Yarra River is brown not because of dirt, but clay. However, it might be interesting to note that before Europeans colonised Australia, it was clear in colour…
Broke but Enthusiastic (Lol)
One’s experience in a foreign place is always shaped by who you’re with. You could be alone, you could be going with people who have never been; you could be visiting locals or – as in this particular case – you could be visiting non-local residents.
Whatever the situation, your company affects the lens through which you view the city. For me, the lens I saw Melbourne through was perhaps my favourite one: the all too familiar university students on a budget lens.
University students are best at making their own fun (and I’m not just talking about the college parties – although these were quite fun in Melbourne!). When you’re a student and haven’t got much money at your disposal, little side lanes and hidden coffee shops suddenly become that much more interesting. You find new and lowkey ways of connecting to a place.
By The Yarra River again!
Uber, Uber Everywhere
Melbourne has been ranked the most liveable city in the world for seven years in a row – a feat that nearly all the Melburnian Uber drivers felt the need to reiterate. It might be interesting to mention that in this particular week, Uber had just launched its Pool service in the city and so there was a promotional 3 free UberPool rides. Granted, we took advantage of it (imagine 3-5 friends, that was like 15 free rides between us).
But while Uber was helpful that week, the tram system was also efficient and easy to use – almost too easy, as you can get away with not paying for the ride. Even still, the tram is actually also free within the CBD and the Docklands (a heavily debated albeit convenient system), which meant that it was easy to move around without spending a cent. (I’m sure you’re starting to get why it’s one of the most liveable cities!)
Tumblr media
Drinking Mulled Wine at Ponyfish Island, a cute café floating under a bridge on the river
I Survived The Edge!
As seen in my previous post about viewing cities from above, the Eureka Skydeck offered a holistic view of Melbourne from 285 metres up. The building has an experience called ‘the edge’, a glass cube which extends out of the building so that you’re looking at Melbourne through the glass floor! Part of the experiences is that, once you’re suspended over the city, the glass ‘pretends’ to break. (It was lowkey scary even though you can tell it’s fake). We got a cool rubber wristband declaring that ‘I survived the edge‘ so I guess it worked out.
The City’s Architecture
Melburnian architecture seems to draw from all sorts of influences from French Renaissance to Neoclassical. In additional to more traditional European architecture, there were little pockets of interesting shapes and colour on buildings.

If you’ve been following my Instagram for a while, you’re bound to know how much I adore Street Art – it’s one of the most democratic forms of artistic expression and as a result is perhaps the most honest reflection of the spirit and times of a place. Melbourne had street art all over.

Hosier Lane, one of Melbourne’s most famous side streets, was especially remarkable. It was perhaps a 5-minute walk through streets of art on the walls. Interesting fact is that the street artists continue to paint on and over the walls such that no two days are the same!
  Sight-Seeing and Learning
Because I went during Australia’s winter, it was a relatively stress-free time to check out things like the Sea Life Aquarium and the Melbourne Museum. The National Gallery of Victoria comes in heavily recommended, although we didn’t get the chance to pay it a visit.
The Melbourne Museum had your typical dinosaur bones and stuffed animals, but also the artworks and rich, diverse histories of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. As I’d mentioned in my post on Sydney/Canberra, the stories of these the oldest civilisation in history have been overwritten by decades of genocide and continued discrimination, and so the museum offered a chance to learn more about the different groups and their lives in Australia both in the past and also today.
In addition to the sight-seeing, part of the experience was to also see how my friends typically live as they study. Their semester was still going on, so I got to visit their university buildings and see their accommodation. University life across different countries can be so similar, yet so different.

  The Artist’s Soul
Overall, it’s not difficult to see how exciting and vibrant Melbourne is as a city. The reason I say it’s really for the artist’s soul is because anyone who believes themselves to be a creator – of music, of dance, of paintings, of stories – will no doubt be inspired by walking the streets of this city.
Visiting friends who mean the world to me also made my stay there super, super special, and there are so many memories I’ve been able to revisit in my mind – from sneaking in and out of university dorms to downloading random apps to ‘win’ free bubble tea to my getting scolded on the tram (for paying the fare when I could’ve gotten away without doing so).

Despite my being there for one week, Melbourne quickly became a favourite city of mine. It didn’t seem to take itself too seriously, allowing equally spaces of green and places to boast memorable buildings. But it’s the art and activity is what captured my heart the most: I wouldn’t mind living in Melbourne. I guess it makes a lot of sense why it’s been crowned the most liveable city in the world for seven years then – those Uber drivers knew what they were on about.

New Post Up!! Melbourne is for the Artist's Soul... After visiting Sydney and Canberra the previous year, the itch to return to Australia was permanent and strong (and admittedly, still present).

The questions remain. How did so many bombs get placed in the building without anyone noticing? Did the three teenagers found in a field have anything to do with it? They seemed to have had a great deal of knowledge about the shooting. Why did they say no bullies at Columbine? Why haven't the"third-gunman" reports received more attention? Why does the top investigator with the FBI have disturbing ties to Columbine and the shootings? Why were officers told not to talk? Why are some files "missing"? Did Klebold and Harris wear masks, or were other assailants wearing masks? What is to be made of the numerous timeline discrepancies? What happened to them on Jan 30, 1998? Who else knew? Why were Manes and Duran arrested and others not? There are even more questions and fewer answers...

Bill Zabel is a long-time Columbine researcher who lives in the Denver area. He recently did a series of telephone interviews at "Vyzygoth's Grassy Knoll,"(based in Tampa, Fla) link here:

Tidbits and Oddities
Some of what Zabel says is a little bit out there, but all in all he seems to know his subject. He didn't name his source in everything he said, though he does seem to have talked to many of the players. Excerps:
--MIB(men in black) were walking the halls at 9am, the student thought they were cops.
--On Monday, 4-12-99, the week before, the school had a mock shooting and a lock down.
--Wound to Klebold was to the back of his head, not the side.
--The DEA was called in because they had infrared scanning equipment.
--MIB were shooting at each other in the gym, according to one girl.{They could be talking about the rumored 'armed response' between SWAT teams at about 3pm}
--Josh Ladd, who died later in that air crash, said MIB were chasing each other in the hall.
--The DECCA banquet, which many students used to excuse their absense that morning, actually occured the DAY BEFORE, on Monday, April 19. Zabel found this out when he went to the Welshire Inn and a manager and another employee there confirmed that. Susan Keating compiled a list of students who went to that baquent and it is dated 4-19-99. {The implication being, I guess, that numerous students had foreknowledge and were told to use that DECCA function as an excuse.}
--He watched Bree Pasquale's interview on TV, quoted her as saying '"OMG, the parents were involved" Pasquale allegedly said that the library shooter look like Klebold, only older.
--Harris' dad was seen with H&K that day, before the shooting. He was also not at work that day.
--The BBC showed a video clip of three vehicles driving down one of the pathways near the school in Clement Park. First vehicle was a state trooper car, the second was a large black panel van, followed by a green mini-van full of MIB. The person sitting in the front passenger seat, also dressed in the uniform, was Thomas Klebold, Dylan's father.
--Three girls that Zabel interviewed were told they would disappear if they kept talking.
--One student descibed the shooters as men wearing ski masks, not students.
--About five students said the 'splatter punks' were inside the school at some point.
--Rachel Scott and Cassie Bernall were associated with the trenchcoat mafia at some point.
--Says reconstruction of cafeteria afterwards involved putting a Wiccan symbol-something having to do with tree branches-on the ceiling(ceiling of the old library area).
--Judy Greco, special ed teacher, admitted to being a practicing Wiccan to the Rocky Mountain News, and was putting kids into a trance in her class. Judy Greco was involved in helping H&K to put their 'basement tapes' together.
--Nate Dykeman was seen in the office area with a weapon. Robert Perry was 250-280lbs at that time and was also a shooter. Chris Morris would have been the rooftop shooter. Stair was also there. Zabel says that all four had a parent working for law enforcement.
--a .45cal pistol and an AR-15 were also found on the scene.
--He claims to have video of the FBI bringing someone dressed in black out of the school on a stretcher. The face is covered by a towel.
--Rumors of more victims than the ones named were common amongst the police.
--Zabel saw a video clip of a guy holding a shiel with 'NATO' on it.
--One of cop's rooftop snipers was an Italian guy who barely spoke English who said he was some kind of a foreign exchange program.
--At the memorial service couple of days later the street was lined with soldiers carrying M-16 rifles. Onlookers were allegedly intimidated by the display. There were also numerous military brass there, admirals and generals from all the services.

Part 4 of Zabel's Columbine interview over at Vyzygoth:
vyzygoth.com/audio/zabel11-27-06.mp3
Excerps:
--102 bombs & devices found in the school(unk if he included those found in their cars); 24 of them were 20lb propane tanks!!
--Witnesses saw 'devices' out in the open before the shooting started, including one kid who saw one in a trashcan in a science classroom.(Possbly referring to that special-ed kid who muttered something about 'bombs in a trashcan' the day before)
--In his statement, science teacher Kent Friesen admitted showing the students how to make pipe bombs. When the cops searched his room, the found several sitting in wire basket sitting on his desk.
--Students accused ex-student Cory Friesen of carrying some of the gear into the school.
--Denver SWAT found the kitchen bomb on 4-21(elsewhere reported as being discovered on 4-22), after the area had been declared secured of bombs at about 9:30pm on 4-20. FBI SA Rich Price said this bomb was too sophisticated for teenagers to have constructed, and included a mercury switch attached to a timing mechanism(probably taped to one of the watch hands?)
[Note: this kitchen bomb was also reported elsewhere to have had a remote-control detonation device]
--Three witnesses-- a JeffCo deputy and a couple of 'CSI' types--witnessed the BATF carrying a device INTO the school the night of the 20th. That night dispatch called Denver SWAT to assist JeffCo in looking for four men who went into the school without authorization. Denver SWAT encountered four BATF in the school at the top of the cafeteria stairwell, who told them they got lost trying to hook-up with another SWAT team.
--Zabel had the opportunity to talk to some the BATF at the Columbine Review Commission meetings. He said they were heavy-duty, neo-nazi biker-types, who he said were "mouthing-off" and using the 'F-word' a lot.
--The follow-up interviews of two of the main janitors were never released, and they were fired after 4-20.
--Zabel also talked to John Stone, who always used the phrase "the people involved in this" instead of "Harris and Klebold" when talking about the suspects.
--He says that FBI SA Rich Price took credit for not allowing the cops to go in, in an interview with the DenverRockyMountainNews of 4-21-99, "becasue I had a team collecting intelligence and that team had to finish their jobs first before SWAT could go in."
--In the wake of Columbine, new non-disclosure laws were created allowing schools involved in future incidents to duck any questions about what they knew or didn't know.
--The TCM employed secret signs and handshakes(like the Masons, I guess).

This is a lot to take in. It all seems so bizarre that it would have to be false. Why on earth would so many people, go through this much trouble, to kill some high school kids? The only thing that sounded authentic was the possibility that dylan was shot through the back of the head and not the side. Eric may have shot him, the SWAT team may have shot him. I don't know. What do you make of all these details though Mama?

Bill Zabel did another audio with Binall of America on September 10, 2013.
http://www.cyberears.com/cybrss/20518.mp3
He starts in about how the evangelical base in the area surrounding Columbine High refuses to acknowledge the involvement of Dylan Klebold because it is a deep sin to "blame the Jew." Later he's discussing the massacre at Virginia Tech. When the interviewer remarks that he hasn't heard anything about other suspects at Virginia Tech, he mentions that the witnesses reported an assailant who was six feet tall and says: "This is an Asian kid, he probably wasn't more than 5'8, 5'9!"
He doesn't make much sense for most of the interview. He goes into his April 19 theory (he now believes it was a drill instead of a hostage situation) and states that the massacre in Aurora was completely fake. He believes they use actors to simulate the more recent events because they don't want to get caught in the act of real ones. Another of his anecdotes regards a woman who disappeared who had information that supports the January Incident theory. It is indeed interesting that John DeCamp, another researcher with close CIA ties, has come out in support of this theory recently. Also interesting in that I recall Ron Aigner and Bill Zabel having a rather heated argument on Facebook some time ago about Donna Taylor's credibility.
He also relates a story about how a woman was told to shut up about the massacre at Columbine by a powerful man in Europe known as "Hans Kolvenbach." The Black Pope? Telling a woman to hush up in a restaurant?

Even the interviewer is having doubts about his guest. At one point the host says "Every time I talk to you Bill it gets stranger and stranger, I don't know.... ." Bottom line is that Zabel makes all sorts of claims but never cites sources. His credibility is low, to put it lightly.

Anime Roundup Pt.1 - Fall 2016 [Spoilers]
It’s that time of the season again where I get to write thousands of words nitpicking whatever anime I happened to watch! For the first time, I want to add a SPOILER warning because although I don’t go out of my way to spoil plot points, I will bring them up if necessary. This is late once again, and honestly I don’t have much of an excuse. I did have some writers’ block, but I also just procrastinated a lot. It’s a good thing no one cares about my opinions in the first place! :D
Also, I had to split this into two parts because apparently there is a word limit of 5000 on text posts.
Overall: This was a really damn good season. The were a couple of disappointments, yes, but it still mostly good and there were a few amazing, Anime of the Year contenders too.
Total Anime: 11 | Average Score: 7.5 | Word Count: 5058
- (DIRECT) SEQUELS -
Bungou Stray Dogs 2nd Season [7/10]
Oh... Bungou Stray Dogs. How dare you do that to me? How dare you get so damn good you made me cry, then a few episodes later, take it all away? That’s what the first 4-episode, completely unrelated flashback arc of this second season did. Meaning: it switches protagonists (focusing on a character/friend from Dazai’s past in Port Mafia), switches tone, and switches... um, quality of writing to be perfectly honest. This whole 4-episode arc is like a masterpiece compared to the rest of the show before and after. I need to talk about why I like it better so much.
#1) The main character is someone I ended up really caring about. Oda Sakunosuke (voiced by the great Jun Suwabe) is a Port Mafia hitman who is unwilling to actually kill people. Despite his job, he takes care of a few adopted kids and tries so hard to do what’s right and follow his principles. He is a protagonist which I rarely see, and I fell in love with him instantly. Compare him to Atsushi who is... just okay... nothing special... kind of boring by comparison, actually. I have issues with being invested with the characters in the main storyline.
Of all the people in the Agency, I only like Kunikida and the boss, Yuki. Collectively, they don’t get much screen time, especially compared to Dazai, but even I did not have a problem with Dazai in this arc. His stupid suicide jokes and tomfoolery are severely toned down and frankly, he’s a lot more likable like this. The other side characters were great too, like the villain, Gide (voiced by another one of my favorite seiyuu, Shinichirou Miki).
#2) Total difference. If you haven’t seen BSD, you won’t know that it is full of humorous moments. A lot of it is... hit and miss. And sure, it’s not overall or primarily a comedy, but the comedy elements are pretty strong and frequent, especially in the first season. In this arc though, there was almost no humor. It was a serious gangster drama with a few supernatural elements. It’s almost comparable to last season’s 91 Days, which I personally enjoyed a lot.
#3) Genre shift. This is related to the previous number and to reiterate, the first arc of BSD season 2 is a dead serious gangster action/drama. The rest of the show is highly comedic with a lot of anime tropes/cliches, but the flashback arc had none of that. It almost didn’t feel like an anime. It was a legitimate crime drama (with the focus on the criminals instead of the police) which is actually really damn rare in anime. I praised 91 Days a lot for this in the previous season, so BSD gave me another taste of that and it was beautifully done. The bleak, but still beautiful color grading, the 1930s aesthetic despite it taking place in modern times, the soundtrack, everything was on point.
Aaand that’s why I upped the score by one point compared to the first season. This flashback arc did it for me. It made me desperately wish that BSD was about Odasaku and Port Mafia instead of Atsushi and the Agency. If this arc was released alone as an OVA, I would’ve given it a 9 for sure.
To be fair though, this season was also genuinely better than the first in a few ways. Namely, the introduction of the overseas/foreign group of specialists full of familiar Western authors like Mark Twain and H.P. Lovecraft. The leader of The Guild, F. Scott Fitzgerald (played by another one of my faves, Takahiro Sakurai), in particular is a delight to watch as he pulls the strings of his evil plans. Generally, all the new additions to the cast, including the extra focus on Port Mafia, are highly entertaining to follow, much better than the Agency alone. Although the Guild arc is a little bit rushed because of the flashback arc, the pacing and everything just felt a lot more exciting than the previous season.
Other than that, I can’t say I have any new criticisms or appraisals. Most of the things I mentioned in my first review of Bungou Stray Dogs carries over. I do want to praise the production values again because this show genuinely has top-tier animation and sound design (because Production I.G.). Forget what I previously said about the direction because that and the cinematography are beautiful. Some of the shots in the show are worthy of being framed. Even the soundtrack was good, even if it isn’t particularly memorable. The biggest, and pretty much only, flaws that this show has is in the writing/plot and characters and those are really important things. Great writing can often make up for a lack of production values, but it usually does work the other way around.
Haikyuu!! 3rd Season [8/10]
I was kind of surprised that for the next sequel of Haikyuu!!, they would dedicate an entire (10 episode) season just to one match. Even now, I question that decision. Don’t get me wrong, Haikyuu!! is still as good as it ever was in terms of production values, writing, voice acting*, etc buuut having 10 episodes dedicated to one match and nothing else? I’m not a fan of it.
Part of that is because as far as sports anime goes, I tend to favor training arcs and down time in-between matches, more than actual matches themselves (and I also prefer shorter matches). This “season” is one rather lengthy match, with nothing after it or before it like in the previous seasons. I’m sure I would’ve been fine with it if it was part of a full 25 episode season. That’s why I actually dropped it one point instead of being a 9/10 like the first two seasons.
Other than that, I don’t really have any complaints... I mean, yes, my preference for shorter matches is a thing, but it’s not at all badly paced like Diamond no Ace. But looking back, I might’ve preferred marathoning it than watching it week-to-week like I did...
*RIP to the original voice actor of Ukai, Kazunari Tanaka.
Natsume Yuujinchou Go [10/10]
Watching this new season of Natsume Yuujinchou was like meeting and old friend. It was like going home. With the exception of a slight change in art style, there is no difference at all between this and the last season that aired back in 2012. My biggest complaint, honestly, is that Go only had 11 episodes rather than 13 like every other season does. Thankfully, another season is guaranteed next year, so it’s not over!
Now, I don’t want to discuss every reason why I love Natsume Yuujinchou so much because I plan to do that one day in a proper review of the series as a whole, but let’s just say that this series is really important to me. This season gave me what I wanted: more fun, heartwarming, and emotional anecdotes of Natsume’s everyday life interacting with youkai and humans alike as well as a bit more backstory of Natsume, Natori, Matoba, and Natsume’s family/friends and the slight moving forward of an overarching plot. Further character development for some few characters also happened in the usual subtle way.
I’m so happy Natsume has maintained its level of quality, even with the studio change. All the original voice actors and most of the original production crew came back. Thank god for this consistency because not all shows get it (*coughsdgmcoughs*).
- INDIRECT SEQUELS & NON-SEQUELS -
Days [7/10]
This is a sports anime. Just a regular sports anime which hits all the beats of every other sports anime. The production values are pretty decent, although the CGI players in long shots are somewhat distracting, but they are nothing special.
So why did I like this one? Well, aside from how I generally favor sports anime (albeit for shallow reasons like good yaoi art/doujins/fanfiction), I did get invested in the characters, that much is undeniable. What helps is that the voice cast is incredible, with Takahiro Sakurai, Daisuke Ono, Tomokazu Seki, Daisuke Namikawa, etc etc. Yes, despite the sameyness of this sports anime, I took a liking to it. It entertained me and it’s good enough for a sports anime, which I rate relative to each other, not other anime of different genres.
Days, in all actuality, is pretty average, but I liked the characters a lot and that’s enough for me.
Drifters [7/10]
Before I start talking about this one, I am not familiar with Hellsing (yet, but it is on my plan-to-watch list), so I can’t really use that as a comparison. Now then, Drifters is a little strange to me because on one hand, it really plays to some of my base desires/guilty pleasures and overall I found it fun to watch. For example, It’s incredibly gorey and violent, which I appreciate. It’s a massive crossover story with famous historical figures and takes place in a very Lord of the Rings-esque (almost like a cliffnotes version) alternate universe. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and has plenty of hilarious and cool moments.
On the other hand, there’s a lot of unfunny “offensive” humor/etc that really takes me out of the viewing experience. How can I properly enjoy something when I’m always lowkey uncomfortable? Some of the sexism and homophobia/transphobia is so bad it feels like an 80s anime. (If you’ve seen an older anime, you know how much more blatant they are.) How is this writer still stuck so far in the past? Get a clue, man, most modern anime is usually at least subtle about it.
Anyway, aside from that, I did also have some problems with other things, which I can only describe vaguely because sometimes I zoned out while watching the show. Well, regardless, I still thought Drifters was pretty good, and I liked it, but it sure as hell is flawed. Looking forward to the second season though.
Fune wo Amu [5/10]
If I had to pick the most disappointing anime of the season, it would be this one. Not that Fune wo Amu/The Great Passage is actually bad, per se, but I expected much more. Granted, it was probably my fault in the first place. I made a lot of assumptions about what it would be like because I heard Haruko Kumota was attached to the project and thought it would be a masterpiece drama like Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (written/drawn by Kumota) earlier this year. Turns out that Fune no Amu is actually based off of a novel written by someone else and Haruko Kumota is merely the character designer for the anime and is currently drawing the manga adaptation.
Even so, this anime looked promising. The whole premise centering around an adult cast working on the production of a dictionary (a somewhat mundane job) is exceedingly rare in anime. Sooo... maybe it would give a unique experience since there would be little-to-no anime cliches and tropes, right? Um, well, yeah that’s the thing. While is succeeded in not having that many of anime’s typical pitfalls, it did not succeed in making the characters or dictionaries in general interesting.
The biggest problem with Fune wo Amu is the complete lack of focus. It kind of goes all over the place and tries to cover everything, but instead it spreads the narrative thin. The only exception is Majime (the main character)’s connection to dictionary making, but even that is marred by a different issue (which I’ll get to after this). There are other things which are subplots or otherwise brought up, but never get properly explored or resolved.
For example: the romance between Majime and Kaguya. For a few episodes, they interact a little bit, Majime has a crush on her, halfway through he writes a cheesy love letter to her and bam! 10+ year time skip and they’re happily married. As someone who hates romance in general, it’s really weird for me to say that I wanted more focus on the romance. (On a sidenote, can I just say that Kaguya’s career of becoming a chef and restaurant owner in an extremely male dominated/sexist industry is about hundred times more interesting than Majime faffing about with dictionaries? Makes me wish the anime was about her instead.)
And that’s not the only thing ofc... the friendship between Majime and Nishioka was not really resolved. The old man and his dedication to making the dictionary was there in the beginning and brought back only at the very end as he’s about to pass away. Almost everything felt like it didn’t get enough attention.
As for Majime’s character development and his relationship with dictionary making. The problem with that is not really the writing, but with the imagery. The symbolism in this show is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. A character says something like “a sea of words” to describe making a dictionary and then later in the episode, Majime has a dream where he’s literally in a sea of words. Not only is it distracting as hell, but it feels unfitting for this kind of anime. Yes, there is some media where big and bold imagery is the way to go (Gurren Lagann, anyone?), but Fune wo Amu is not it. If the symbolism was more subtle or abstract, it definitely would’ve worked in its favor. Instead, it’s hamfisted and corny. If you want a good example of subtle, interesting, and effective imagery from a show with a similar vibe, watch Rakugo Shinjuu (which is in my top 3 best anime of 2016).
I also have to quickly mention the music, even though it’s not visual, because it also suffers the problem of being too obvious and distracting. It’s not a good thing when the main theme kicks in and I groan because it annoys me that much. Again, a more subtle soundtrack would’ve been better. Other than those major problems, there’s nothing really of note to mention. The animation itself is decent and the voice acting is fine as usual. Nothing standout though, despite the cast full of veterans.
So in the end, I struggled between giving this an anime a 5 or 6. I originally settled on a 6, but then lowered it back down to a 5 because I was being too forgiving.

Jun Jiuling: Episode 4
Spoilers! Previous Ep /// Master post of all recaps /// Next Ep
Zhenzhen becomes the comptroller of accounts for the Fangs, Chengyu gets engaged, and Zhu Zan makes it through an episode without crying. Haha of course I'm lying about that last one.

Zhenzhen Keeps Busy
Zhenzhen decides to help out with the Fang family business. It's actually a cover so she can investigate the death of the emperor's father. Unfortunately, her casual perusal of the account books triggers a full scale audit of all the Fang holdings. Sidebar: I still can't figure out what the Fang family business is.
Zhenzhen is interning with the two Fang daughters- the Nice One (Mom's daughter) and the Kinda Bitchy One (Concubine Su's daughter). The lighting is so bad in this scene- it's so intense that everything is blown out. This show is obsessed with blazing shafts of sunlight and not very obsessed with how that type of lighting affects the actors and sets.
Tumblr media
I've never seen a house that gets direct sunlight from all sides, all the time.
Zhenzhen continues to treat Chengyu's poison problem. She also realizes that Concubine Su is spying on his condition and reporting back to an unknown enemy. But who - and why? This poor kid. Zhenzhen has a plan- she will marry Chengyu to continue his treatment and watch over him. Gramma Fang has reservations, but says OK. I say ewwww. That's your face's cousin! And he's only 15!
Tumblr media
I have a bad feeling this fake marriage is going to for real break Chengyu's heart
Lu Yunqi: Bigamist, Murderer, Party Planner
We check in on ZhenZhen's (well, really Princess Jiuling's) sister and younger brother back in the capital. Lu Yunqi has shown up to propose to sis. With absolutely no emotion, he informs her they are getting married on Jiuling's birthday. She looks thrilled.
Tumblr media
“You've made me the happiest woman alive” *internal screaming*
Tumblr media
I still have all the stuff from my last wedding.
Meanwhile Zhu Zan gets another one of those comprehensive secret messages. This one says Princess Jiuling knew that her father was murdered. It also says Lu Yunqi was in on the murder plot. Zhu Zan now thinks that Lu Yunqi murdered Princess Jiuling in the prison. Zhu Zan has an incredible face journey while processing this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The secret message concludes with a drawing- it's the stamp from the clue Zhenzhen is working from.
Time for a Subplot
The lantern festival is coming up and ZhenZhen has a design for an (apparently ugly) giant lantern with a Go board on it.
Tumblr media
We call this a "soft critique" in the art biz
While she's at the lantern workshop, Zhu Zan comes by to ask her to investigate the Fang's business for him. One step ahead of you there, boop. Zhenzhen says do your own homework. Zhu Zan then tells Zhenzhen he wanted to marry Princess Jiuling, but the emperor set her marriage before he could get back to the capital. Zhenzhen seems genuinely surprised by this information.
Tumblr media
Haven't you noticed he starts crying every time you talk about her?
Elective Course: Cartography
This keeps getting mentioned- the map of the capital. Here's what we know:
Zhu Zan was accused of making and selling a map of the capital
Zhenzhen keeps asking around trying to get a map of the capital
Zhu Zan did indeed make the map, with the sole intent of forcing the emperor to call him to the capital to explain himself. That way he could visit Princess Jiuling. This is a totally convoluted, ridiculously complicated, Nie Huaisang level idea. I approve.
Zhenzhen finally gets a map. Zhu Zan sees her with it and wonders what's up
Tumblr media
Switch to street view
Harem Count, Episode 4
Lu Yunqi (married to)
Ning Yunzhao (benched)
Zhu Zan (having personal crisis)
Fang Chengyu (engaged to, poor sap)

Another Perspective On BLACK LIVES MATTER: Robert De Niro, Tika Sumpter On Raising Biracial Children + Tia Mowry Reflects On Her Black Mother Being Treated Differently
Biracial celebs and celebs with biracial children are speaking out with a unique perspective on the Black Lives Matter movement following the killing of George Floyd. More inside…
If you didn’t know, Robert De Niro is a father to six biracial children. And he recently got real about raising them in America and the impact it has had on him as white father.
All of the 76-year-old actor’s kids are grown except one – who all from three previous relationships. He shares daughter Drena, 48, and son Raphael, 44, with his ex-wife, Diahnne Abbott. He also has sons Julian, 24, and Aaron, 24, with his ex, Toukie Smith, and son Elliot, 22, and daughter Helen, 8, with his ex-wife, Grace Hightower.
As the nation reacts to the killing of George Floyd, hard – but necessary - conversations are being brought up about race and white supremacy.
The Irishman star recently appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” where he talked about what it’s like raising biracial children as a white father.
“My children are all half black and I don’t have … even me, I take certain things for granted,” he said. “When people say that they tell their kids, ‘Keep your hands [up] when you’re stopped by any cops, keep your hands on the steering wheel, don’t make a sudden move, don’t put your hands below, don’t do this,’ you understand that. That’s scary. That has to change.”
De Niro pointed out that all cops aren’t bad, but if someone is hurting another human being “for no reason other than self defense or the defense of other people around shouldn't be doing that job."
The award winning actor touched on how people were willing to protest amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
"We had all the protests and everything going on, rightfully so, people are so angry that they did not care. They said, 'I'm going out anyway,'" he said. "I think a lot of people did wear masks, it seems that way. But that's how angry everybody was."

De Niro made these comments has protests have swept the nation in response to the killing of George Floyd. People are hitting the streets to demand justice for people who were made victim of police brutality and racial injustice.
As for relationships...
"Mixed-ish" star Tika Sumpter has a message for people in interracial relationships, like herself, amid these trying times. She's engaged to white actor Nicholas James after they met on the set of Tyler Perry's "The Have & The Have Nots" in 2016. They are parents to their almost 4-year-old daughter, Ella.

"Dear Black interracial couples with a significant other who is white (raises hand), we DO NOT need to protect them," Tika tweeted. "I promise, they will be A. OK. They need to continue to fight for us. If they get offended when you talk about racists. You have a bigger problem on your hands."

That's a word.
Tika has been vocal about being a black woman in an interracial relationship. Most recently, she launched a new project to spark candid conversations about race. She co-founded a motherhood platform called Sugaberry with her friend Thai Randolph, who is a media executive.
Tika shared a conversation she had with her 4-year-old daughter about the killing of George Floyd. It went like this:
My talk w/ my 3.5 year old about equality was hopeful. We’re going to a children’s protest. Me: George said “I can’t breath”. Ella: I said that! I went to the hospital. Why didn’t anyone help him? Me:That’s why we’re marching. What do you want your sign to say? Ella: I love you.

#tbt This is a photo of my beautiful mother. Growing up #biracial, mom is black and dad is white, it was very clear to me seeing the #privilege that my dad had as opposed to my #mother. Some examples, during our #sistersister days when traveling for work we would often fly first class. There were several times my mother was asked if she was in the right seat. Another incident that stood out for me was when we were buying our first home as a family. My mother walked in the house model with us asking for a brochure. A person had said the houses were sold out. My dad walked in and it was a different story. My #goal is to see #change. This year has been a tough year. Several tears have been shed. However, a friend told me these tears will not be wasted. The #love and #support around the world has kept me going. A #change is gonna come.

Singer-songwriter Halsey is launching a Black Creators Funding Initiative in support of Black artists, Black photographers, Black makeup artists, Black writers, Black poets, and more.  This comes after she revealed she now acknowledges her privilege of being a "white passing" biracial woman who is not susceptible to race-based mistreatment from society or police.
im white passing. it’s not my place to say “we”. it’s my place to help. i am in pain for my family, but nobody is gonna kill me based on my skin color. I’ve always been proud of who I am but it’d be an absolute disservice to say “we” when I’m not susceptible to the same violence. https://t.co/2p6RVJixwl

The 25-year-old "You Should Be Sad" singer announced the initiative on social media, encouraging fans to tag their favorite Black creators on Instagram and Twitter with #BLACKCREATORSFUN. "I am launching this to give funds, resources, and a platform to Black creators," she tweeted. "Looking for Black creators who want to enrich the world with their work."

It’s become very clear to me that some of you need to see what I’ve seen. Please swipe through this. These pictures and videos don’t even scratch the surface. It’s easy from the comfort of your home to watch looting and rioting on television and condone the violent measures being taken by forces. But what you don’t see is innocent peaceful protestors being shot at and tear gassed and physically assaulted relentlessly. You think it’s not happening, it’s only the “thugs” and the “riots”, right? The police are keeping you safe right? You’re wrong. This is happening everywhere. And innocent people exercising their rights to speech and assembly are facing violence and abuse of power. With all of our medical professionals being CONSUMED and EXHAUSTED with Covid, there is little to no medical attention available. I have first hand treated men women and children who have been shot in the chest, the face, the back. Some will lose vision some have lost fingers. I have been covered in innocent blood. My father is a black man. My mother is an EMT. This week I had to put those two associations together in ways that have horrified me. This is NOT a virtue signaling post. But I HAVE to show you what I am witnessing with my own eyes. With Trump’s decision today to enforce the mobilization of armed forces on our own citizens, this has escalated beyond your privilege and comfort to not care. Please care. We are begging you to care. This is war on Americans. This is everyone’s problem. Everyone’s. #BLACKLIVESMATTER

just want to take a minute to say how proud I am of my little brother @sevianfrangipane for finding his voice and being out protesting every single day. keep your family close right now if you’re lucky enough to have them to rely on. if you are NON-BLACK and: married to a black person, the parent of a black child, or the child of a black parent, or any other interfamilial relationship with a black person, then this is a time to let them talk when they feel like talking. listen and listen with love. Don’t assume they aren’t upset because they haven’t expressed issues or traumas in the past. A lot of repressed feelings and memories may be uncovered right now. Receive it with grace empathy and promise to learn or change where need be. With Love. @paytonselzer
