test your worth; part two of perfect girlfriend
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
parings; monkey d luffy x reader, sanji & reader (platonic)
warnings; violence, blood, swords, kinda suggestive in the beginning.
summary; the crew, even after meeting you, had still refused to believe luffy's claims, that you were a fanastic cook and sword fighter, yet they had to be proven wrong now, don't they?

— You woke up to Luffy, snuggling you close after the exciting night you had, you stirred to the side, picking up Luffy's shirt that was lazily discarded onto the germ infested floors, grabbing your shorts from the other side as you took your bandana. You tied your hair before walking out to the kitchen.
It was a habit of yours to cook breakfast every morning, a routine you were not to break so easily. It kept you alert and in the repetition of the mornings, it gave you comfort. Waking up everyday to do the thing you enjoyed. You hummed to the song playing on the radio as you walked into the kitchen to find a black-eyed Sanji. You giggled causing him to turn around.
"Why hello there, I must say, its nice having company this early in the morning." Sanji smiled as he prepped the ingredients, flour, eggs, sugar, butter. He's making pancakes.
"Pancakes huh?" You smiled at the boy who laughed. You walked towards the island, grabbing a bowl as you cracked the eggs into them, beating them as you added the other ingredients.
"A cooker huh, guess Luffy was right." Sanji nodded as he stared at your methods, it wasn't at a beginners level, in fact, rather professional, he smiled as he found a new partner in crime, someone to assist in his duties. It was comforting knowing he didn't have to wake up everyday at 5 AM alone to cook for his crew.
"Yeah, I used to help cook for my dad's crew." You answered as he smiled, dealing with the dry ingredients. The two of you spent the next two hours, sharing stories and laughs as you occasionally threw flour at him as you baked the goods. As he looked away, you added your secret, ingredients to the batch. Cocoa powder and maple syrup, it always took the pancakes to another level. You turned to the clock, it was 8 AM. "Oh shit, I gotta go get my stuff!"
"I'll save some for you!" Sanji yelled as you smiled at him as you walked down the ramp in Luffy's shirt. You could see some of the dirty looks a few new villagers gave you. A devil fruit eater, what a waste. That's what they all thought, but Luffy was different and you knew it.
You walked into your house, walking into your bedroom as you collected your belongings in two travel bags. One for your outfits and another for your special belongings and gifts from Luffy you hold onto. You grabbed a photo of you and Luffy as children with your father in the back. I miss you dad. For a while, you regretted not joining him on his last voyage, but also felt some sort of relief. It was always dangerous, you were 8 and knew how to wield a sword like the great Mihawk.
It wasn't the life you'd expect as a child, it never was with your father, you smiled at the picture, placing it carefully into the bag before closing it. It was time, you were going back to your old life.
Just this time with new people.
— Luffy yawned as he turned around to find the other side of the bed cold. She must have gone to get her stuff. He sighed as he walked to find the shirt he had worn yesterday, only to find it gone. He smiled before walking to his drawer, he always let an empty drawer in hopes of this day, he grabbed his flower shirt as he walked to the kitchen where both Nami and Ussop stood. Zoro soon emerged after Luffy staring at the pancakes that were made.
"I had a little help from a new friend." Sanji smiled as Luffy smile grew wider, he quickly sat down, taking a few from to his plate as he took a bite, the familiarity exploring his mouth. Her secret recipe.
"Whoa, what did you add?" Nami asked the boy who seemed confused. "I guess she added it didn't she."
"It's Y/N's secret recipe, I recognise the taste." Luffy nodded as Nami and Ussop looked at eachother. "I told you, she was a better cook than Sanji."
"I actually believe that now." Sanji smiled as you walked in, your bags left on the floor as Luffy stood up, he placed a kiss on youe cheek before smiling at you. He carried your bag as you sat down, taking one of your pancakes.
"I'm sorry I changed your recipe." You apologized to the boy who shook his head, he smiled at you as he took another bite, the flavourful pancake made him explode, he was sl curious. "I could teach it to you."
"That'll ruin the surprise." Sanji winked as you as you rolled your eyes, Luffy joined you as he sat down beside you, a smile evading his face as he kissed your cheek, placing his arm around you as he fed you your meal.
"I'm gonna go practice." Zoro announced as he stood up, grabbing his swords as he walked out, only to be stopped by Luffy.
"Well, Y/n could help you out!" Luffy smiled as you shrugged. He looked you up and down before nodding. You stood up, grabbing your sword as you walked with him towards the deck.
You noticed the crew watching the two of you to see if Luffys tales were a reality. You sighed as you got into position, closing your eyes. You often found yourself using sound to your advantage. You heard Zoros scoff as he yielded his sword, waiting for you to attack.
You ducked down, going behind him before kicking him, successfully taking him aback as you attacked, he raised his sword, it colliding with yours before you back flipped and slid across, kicking his legs down as you continue to collid swords.
He stood up, sliding to the other side as he tried to attack you with the back of his sword, only for you to touch the blade with your hand before kicking him in the stomach. Luffy quickly jumped down, examining the small cut on your hand.
"Shit, you okay?" Zoro asked you as you nodded.
"I held the blade, it's my fault anyways, you're not to bad tho." You smiled at the boy who nodded. Winking at you as in a 'your not bad yourself' manner before walking off to get the medkit as Luffy held onto the small cut.
"That was stupid." Luffy scolded you as you rolled your eyes, bandaging the wound before walking to the figure head with Luffy, placing your head on his as you stared at the ocean. "I'm happy you're here."
"I'm happy I'm here too."

Warnings: Not proof read, smut and fluff, fingering, oral sex(on reader), squirting?(gn!reader so it depends on how you're reading it ig) I literally just finished this but can't remember what I wrote so if you see anything you think I should mention feel free to tell me :3
Word count: 1997
You and Castor have been seeing each other for a while. You met after one of his band's concerts and just hit it off.
Things were going great between you, he was the sweetest thing while also being the biggest tease you’ve ever met.
You two were staying at his dads ranch for the weekend. You do this every so often just as something fun to do, you’d usually spend your time helping out around the house, making meals and such. Just having an all around fun time with your boyfriend, James popping in every now and then and making some stupid joke or teasing the two of you.
This morning was different. When you woke up you were not greeted by Castor’s warm arms around you, instead you were alone and his side of the bed was cold. The bed was actually rather small and you basically slept on top of him. You always assumed that’s why he enjoyed spending so much time here.
Smelling something buttery and good you ventured out into the hallway and to the kitchen, thinking he might’ve decided to make breakfast for a change. Nope, James was at the stove making French toast. He offered you a seat at the table, saying he was almost done. You sat down and he handed you a plate with two slices of French toast, setting maple syrup and butter down on the table as well before getting his own plate and joining you at the table.
“Do you know where Castor is?” You asked, spreading some butter on your breakfast.
James shrugged. “Said he had something special planned.” He winked at you with a cheeky grin, causing you to roll your eyes. Still, you couldn’t hold back a smile.
After breakfast you did what you normally would, helping out around the house and with yard work, whatever James needed help with. You just couldn’t find Castor, not that you ever really went far enough to look. It was strange, usually you couldn’t go five minutes without him crying for a kiss. It was honestly a little worrisome.
It was now around five o’clock and you decided to set yourself up on the porch to read a little outside before the sun set. That’s when you heard the revving of a bike. A quad, to be specific. And there was Castor, finally coming around to the front lawn where you were facing.
He doubled back and looked up at you with a bright smile. “Come down here!” He called, obviously you couldn’t deny him. You marked your page and set it down on a nearby table before heading down to meet him.
“Where have you been all day?” You asked, unable to conceal your smile at seeing him again.
“C’mon and I’ll show you.” He said with a chuckle, patting the seat behind him. You joined him on the quad, wrapping your arms around his waist. “Ready?” He asked, glancing back at you over his shoulder. You couldn’t resist kissing him, you’d been missing his lips all day, it was only fair.
“Ready.” You smiled. He drove you down across the fields, weaving around cattle and other livestock before coming to a small creek where you saw a picnic all set up.
There was a big blanket spread out a little further away from the riverbed to keep it dry, a small basket, a bouquet of your favourite flowers along with a few lit candles spread around. This romantic little shit, you thought.
He stopped the quad a little further away, turning it off before getting off and helping you down as well. “Do you like my surprise?” He asked, stepping behind you and wrapping his arms around your waist, gently guiding you over to the picnic. The sun was starting to set, lighting the place up with a golden glow.
“It’s perfect.” You gleamed, holding his hands against you.
Castor giggled and sat you down. “Alright, alright, hang on, it gets better.” You chuckled at his enthusiasm as he rushed off to a nearby tree where there was a small speaker. He pressed a few buttons on it, fiddling with the settings until “Last Kiss” by Pearl Jam came on. It wasn’t too loud, just soft and in the background, adding to the romantic atmosphere Castor had set up for you.
He came back and sat beside you, his arm snaking around your waist and holding you close as he pressed a soft kiss to your lips. Your hand found its way to his shoulder, moving up his neck.
Soon you were in his lap, both your hands tangled in his long, blonde hair. Soft moans escaping you while his hands explored your body. “It’s been so long.” He mumbled against your lips. He trailed kisses up your jaw and down your neck. He knew from past experience where your sensitive spots were and started sucking and nipping at them, drawing more noises from you.
“Fuck- Cas, need you so bad.” You whined, grinding against him. His big hands went to your hips, holding you down.
Castor gave a soft chuckle. “I know, that’s why I brought you out here.” His fingers dipped into your shorts, undoing the button and pulling them down. You helped him out a bit with getting them along with your underwear off, leaving your bottom half open to him.
You shivered and pressed your lips to his again. “Cas, it’s cold.” It was mid spring, but still a bit chilly.
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep you nice and warm.” Castor smiled and pulled off your shirt. He got you onto your back and kissed over your collarbone, licking and flicking your nipples, pulling more moans out of you. He watched you carefully as he kissed down your torso. “This is what you wanted, right?” He kissed the inside of your thigh. You nodded, biting your lip to muffle the noises you desperately wanted to let out. Castor bit the same spot. “You have to use your words.”
“Yes! Yes, please. Please, just fuck me.” He laughed at your pleas. He licked a strip up you and began to suck, swirling his tongue around you and making you squeal. Your hands went to his hair, tugging on it. He groaned at the feeling, sending vibrations through you. A knot was building in your stomach, familiar and warm. “Fuck- Cas, ‘m gonna-gonna cum.” You managed to get out through your moaning.
Just as the knot was about to burst Castor pulled away. You whined at the abrupt stop. He sat up on his knees. “Didn’t think it would be that easy, did you?” He asked, looking down. It was condescending in a sense but sent shivers up and down your spine.
Castor pulled his shirt over his head, tossing it to the side. You admired his built frame while he fumbled with the fly of his jeans before he finally got them off, tugging his boxers down with them. His cock sprung free, you bit your lip at the sight, hands sliding down your sides before going to touch yourself. Castor swatted your hands away. “That’s my job.” He took your hands in his, holding them above your head in one as the other came to cup your cheek. “Such a sweet thing for me.” He praised before his lips crashed against yours again.
The hand on your face caressed all down your body, stopping to pay some attention to your chest before continuing down and pushing inside you. Your lips parted in a moan and he took it as his chance to get his tongue in your mouth. He had two fingers inside you, pumping them in and out at a fast pace with the heel of his palm hitting you just right to add to the pleasure.
Your eyes rolled back. “Hah- fuck, Cas, I-I can’t-can’t take it, please!” You whined into his mouth. He pulled away a bit to look down at you, his fingers still curling inside you and hitting just the right spots.
“Can’t take what? C’mon, you gotta use your words.” He teased, pulling his fingers out until it was just the tips. “Want me to stop?” He knew the answer, of course.
You shook your head. “No! No, no, no, please! Want you! Want your cock, please!” You cried, squirming beneath your boyfriend. He laughs at your sad attempt to get some more friction.
“Alright, since you’ve been so good, I’ll give you a reward.” He let your hands go and pulled his fingers out of you, lining himself up to your now pulsing hole and slowly thrusting in. Your jaw hangs open as a long, breathy moan leaves you at the familiar stretch. When he’s all the way in he stops, giving you a second to adjust. His hands move up and down your sides in a comforting fashion. “Would you look at that?” He hummed, pressing down lightly on your stomach to reveal a small bump. “I missed that, you know?” He pressed his lips to yours for a moment before he started moving, slowly at first and then his thrusts picked up.
Castor held your knees to your chest, rutting into you with harsh thrusts, his hips slamming against yours. Low grunts and groans left him while you were left a moaning, crying mess, weakly tugging at the blanket and grass around you. “Please! Please, please, please! Cas, Cas, I can’t- Cas, please!”
“Please- fuck, please what, Doll?” He asked, barely containing himself.
“Please, let me cum, please! I-I’ve been good, promise!” The knot was building all over again, twisting and turning and heating up.
Castor’s eyes screwed shut and he bit his bruised bottom lip, his head tilted back at the pleasure jolting through him. “Fuck, cum for me, baby. Cum on my dick.” You let out a squeal, your legs shaking and your back arching off the ground. Your eyes rolled back and your jaw dropped open but nothing came out as you squirted all over yourself and Castor. It didn’t take long for his thrusts to get sloppy, your walls fluttering around him and he just needed to reach his own high. “Fuck- Can I- can I cum inside? Baby, let me cum inside, please.” It was always fun to watch him beg, the way he’d hold himself back until you gave a clear indication of what he wanted. You gave a small nod and he shot his load deep inside of you, letting out loud, guttural groans.
Castor’s hands came beside you as he slowly lowered himself, laying down at your side and pulling you to him so he wouldn’t have to pull out just yet. “Fuck, I love you so much, you know that, right?” You gave a small nod, still reeling from your high. “Tired?” He asked with a soft smile, you nodded again. He held your head to his bare chest and chuckled. His breathing was still heavy, his heart beating fast and hard.
Castor cleaned you up, the basket he brought didn’t actually have any food in it, just a soft cloth to get the both of you cleaned off afterwards. “You had a whole picnic set up just for sex?” You asked.
“Just go to sleep.” He said with a laugh and gave you a kiss on the forehead. “I’ll get you back home.” He rubbed your cheek softly with his thumb and went back to packing everything up.
You managed to fall asleep while he got everything put away. When you eventually woke up again you were already back in bed at the ranch house, head on Castor’s chest while he lazily played with your hair. You looked up at him, not fully awake. “I love you.” You whispered.
“I love you more, Doll.” He whispered back, kissing your forehead. “Now go to sleep, don’t wanna be tired tomorrow.” You smiled and nuzzled back against him, cuddling closer before falling back asleep.

Hello! Do you mind sharing the edible cookie dough recipe you tried ? I've been trying to find it on IG but I trust you more than the 500 random videos I've seen.
yeah doesnt help that they implemented the new "ask meta ai!" shit instead of a proper search
this was the video that kept showing up in my feed in fb AND insta. I did see the original vid too but ignored it because fitness bullshit but I stumbled across enough of Liams videos to think hes pretty decent and transparent.
I did not follow that recipe because I hate almond flour and also peanut butter. I used oat flour instead and vanilla protein powder and nestle mini chocolate chips. I tried the m&ms and it was awful do not recommend tbh even if it WAS that our m&ms were Bad the acid in the yogurt melted the dye off the m&ms and made the mixture soooo gross looking (and if you can taste the dye like i can then its also a bad time!)
I also made a batch this morning without any sugar at all and found i dont need it so will be leaving it out in the future. Oh i had been using brown sugar which i think gave it more of that cookie dough flavor than maple syrup or honey would.
I don't pay too much attention to measurements, I go by consistency, but roughly I use
2 cups of old fashioned oats (i use bobs red mill gluten free oats)
2 scoops of vanilla milkshake protein powder (i honestly just grabbed the smallest container my grocer had, but recently bought the quest brand and will try that next time)
fage greek yogurt, plain, 5% fat (because fuller fat yogurt tastes better! fight me! I'm not doing this for ~healthy~ uwu im doing this for Please Get Protein In Your Body I Beg), this is where I eyeball it. I add more yogurt if it's too thick, a large spoonful at a time.
I put the oats and protein in a food processor, and then add the yogurt, but if you use preground alt flour you can jhst use a bowl. I recommend adding everything a little at a time into whatever is thickest (so if you use peanut butter, add yogurt to that, and then the flour and protein).
Also a friend tried this with regular flour and a non whey based protein and a non dairy yogurt and was. Non enthused. I'm sure if you play around with the flavors YOU like you can find something but I don't think this can be made dairy free tbh but I also tried every DF yogurt I could find and they were all disgusting. So. (also ifnyou use regular flour pls bake it first. but tbh i dont really recommend it bc raw wheat flour just. doesnt add the same flavor oat or nut flours do.)
I'm also curious about using chocolate protein powder and nutella I think that'd taste gr8. Outside if the absurd cost of protein powder, this really is a good base recipe to use if you wanna try messing around with recipes you find online. People may give me flack for drastically changing this recipe but pls I based it off my moms oatmeal cookies all it was missing was coconut flakes lol

Hi sorry, I don’t rlly know how to request but I hope this makes a bit sense > _ < 👍
🧺Arthur Fleck Joker - Something about Easter, what they would do and would they do hide and seek? Idk surprise us! :3 🙌
Happy Easter too! ✨ 🪺
💐Celebrating Easter with Arthur Fleck 💐
Tumblr media
CW: Child abuse, parental neglect, food insecurity.
First off, I can’t imagine that Arthur really celebrated a lot of holidays growing up.
He probably had the typical crafts and class parties at school, which he enjoyed very much, but what would happen at home was kind of a toss up.
If Penny was lucid, and they had the money, I can see her being the type to go all out. Most food bank programs offer special meals or food related to those meals around the holidays. Penny would absolutely take full advantage of that, and do either a turkey or ham dinner with all the fixings.
Arthur remembers these moments fondly, sitting on the couch with a full belly and maybe watching a church service or something on TV while he and his Mom decorate eggs. Having food for days after between the dinner leftovers and the eggs, which for Arthur meant eating like a king at least for awhile.
However, if Penny was having an episode or worse if they were staying with one of her so called “boyfriends?”
Well, in those cases Arthur was lucky if the day passed without ceremony like any other.
Depending on the conditions of their place, Easter could mean he got one less beating on account of the holiday and the closest thing he’d get to dinner was dry crackers and a juice box that he managed to scrounge up from the cupboards, if that.
Arthur doesn’t like thinking about those times too much. It’s just another reminder of all the happiness he missed out on and is desperately trying to bring back into his life.
After meeting and having a relationship with you, he’d probably mention all of this at one point or another when the holidays start coming around.
Even if he’s still living with Penny, or if you have your own place, you’d probably go all out to compensate for his childhood.
You’d probably go as far as to plan an itinerary and a menu, which both confuses and delights Arthur.
Him??? You’re really doing all this for him??? But it’s too much trouble, too much work, at least let him help with the-
Shush baby boy, just relax and let your partner spoil you.
First on the agenda? Special Easter breakfast.
Whether you stay over from Saturday or come early Sunday morning, Arthur is woken up by the smell of pancakes and bacon.
As far as I’m concerned, Easter breakfast is almost as important as Christmas. Especially if you come from a Catholic family and were fasting for lent like mine did sometimes.
Arthur isn’t even off of his sofa bed before you’re putting a heaping plate in his lap.
For a moment, he’d be too stunned to speak. You’d really outdone yourself.
First off, there’s a whole pile of bacon, still steaming hot and cooked to a crisp just how he likes.
“You eat every bite of that, or else.”
It’s not a real threat because you give him a gentle poke in the ribs when you say it. Arthur knows you’re doing it because you care and want him to have a decent meal for once.
Next are the pancakes. Oh my god, the pancakes.
These aren’t your garden variety, maple syrup and butter kind of pancakes.
Like yes, you’ve included those things, but also you’ve gone the extra mile and added in fresh fruit and chocolate chips and even tried to make some into fun shapes.
There’s an “A” shaped one, as well as a bunny with a blueberry eyes and a strawberry nose, and best of all, a clown with banana slice and chocolate chip eyes, a raspberry nose, jam mouth and whipped cream hair.
They’re so pretty Arthur almost doesn’t want to eat them, but does in the end because he doesn’t want you to feel like he doesn’t appreciate it.
Of course, know you’re getting a kiss between each and every bite.
It’s while he’s eating that Arthur also notices the colourful eggs that are stashed around the apartment. He’d look over at you, eyes sparkling with delight and give you a big grin.
“Are we gonna do an egg hunt???”
He can’t remember the last time he’s done an egg hunt, if ever. Even on the good Easters, usually all they did was dye some eggs to eat later since Penny was usually too sick or didn’t have the extra money to commit to an egg hunt.
You’d smile back, and lean down to give Arthur a kiss on the forehead. “Mmm-hmmm, though don’t get too excited. There’s no chocolate in these ones but they’ll lead you to your next surprise”
It’s all Arthur can to do wolf down the last off his food before he’s off like a shot, tearing around the apartment like he’s setting an Olympic record for egg finding.
You love seeing him like this and the way the childlike wonder takes years off his expression and posture. This is Arthur at his most authentic and you want to cherish every second.
You tried to be as creative as possible when hiding the eggs, even in such a small place. There’s six of them in total and Arthur finds them all in about twenty minutes.
Like you said, the eggs don’t contain chocolate but instead are plastic shells that pop open with something inside.
Arthur would spread the contents out on the coffee table and discover that it’s basically a picture puzzle with the pieces cut into horizontal strips.
Immediately, he’s all business. He’d hunch over the coffee table and light a cigarette, his expression one of intense focus.
When you try to help or give him hints, he waves you off, determined to solve this by himself and make the most of your hard work.
So of course, you oblige him. If you’re in the apartment he shares with Penny you’d probably check in on her and make sure she has something to eat, explaining that you and Arthur will be going out for the day.
If it’s a place you and Arthur share by yourselves, then you’d start cleaning up the dishes and the kitchen while he works at the puzzle.
For once the two of you have the chance to bask in peaceful, domestic silence. While you’re excited to do all the activities you planned with Arthur, you know this is what the holidays are really about. Having these quiet moments together where you can just take it slow and not worry about what’s coming next or where you need to be.
You’d just be putting the last of the dishes away when there’s an excited cry from the living room.
You’d poke your head in through the kitchen door to find Arthur, grinning triumphantly around his cigarette with the completed puzzle on the coffee table.
The picture it makes is of Gotham Central Park, specifically the front entrance.
You’d come over to Arthur and lean down to give him another kiss on the forehead.
“Good job babe, you did that so fast! How’d I get lucky enough to get someone who’s handsome and smart?”
Arthur would sit on the couch for a moment, eyes closed and basking in the praise like a cat in a sunbeam.
When he opens his eyes a few seconds later, he’d stub out his cigarette in a nearby ashtray and ask “Are we going right now?”
The way he says it is like a kid asking about Disney world, a little breathless and like he can’t quite bring himself to believe it.
That breaks your heart a little, in spite of the glow in the pit of your stomach.
It’s just a trip to the park. You’ve done it a million times or more with your family over the years, but once again this gives you a glimpse of the kind of life Arthur has had until you came along. Things haven’t been easy for him, and so he takes nothing good for granted, no matter how small.
You’d smile at Arthur and reach down to caress the side of his face with your hand
“Yeah, if you get ready in the next fifteen minutes we could probably make the 9:30 train”
Arthur would all but leap off the couch, grinning wide and with a mischievous glint in his eye.
Before you can react, he’s scooped you up into a massive bear hug that lifts your feet clean off the floor.
He’s squeezing you so tight it hurts a little, but you don’t mind. You squeeze back just as hard.
“Thank you so much for doing this” he’d murmur in your ear “I love you so much”
He’d punctuate that statement with a long, deep kiss where he almost leans you into a dip. He’d taste like smoke with a hint of maple syrup, which makes the warmth in your gut blossom and spread in a pleasant tingle across your body.
When the kiss breaks off you’re flushed, panting and unable to say anything more than a half mumbled “you’re welcome”

Review #293: Last Splash, The Breeders
FUUUUUUUCK I love this record, but it permanently damaged the hearing in my right ear. I caught their show at Blackheath Hall in 2005. I put myself right at the front because I really loved them that much and I wanted — no, needed — to feel the heaving guitar in my chest, it felt like, to even continue on. I was seventeen so you know, everything felt a bit extra. I might as well have been hugging the PA system. Anyway, I didn’t anticipate what would happen during the part in Cannonball where Kim sings (yells) “WANT YOU, LITTLE CUCKOO” into the harmonic mic with all that distortion. Yeah, it’s loud. It’s so loud. My eardrum burst. I’ve had tinnitus ever since. My poor left eardrum suffered the same fate two weeks later at the Reading Fez (RIP), during a Mew show. Respectable, but so much less cool than its audio peeper partner in crime. Wear earplugs my friends. It’s not a joke.
Kim Deal founded The Breeders while The Pixies were on hiatus. Well that’s not true, she had been doing both but never able to focus on The Breeders, until 1993 when went Frank Black abruptly announced The Pixies hiatus live during an interview without informing the other band members first. The hiatus was kind of due burnout from recording three albums in two years and touring the hell out of them. Really though, Kim was not getting along with Frank. Here’s the thing — nobody really gets along with Frank. I love the Pixies. I do. But I will get into a fist fight with anyone who wants to insist that they’re better than The Breeders. They’re not. And the thing is, everyone has listened to The Pixies, while most of those same people haven’t given Kim and her band the same time of day. And you know why that is? Because they’re women who are playing heavy rock music. That’s all there is to it. I won’t hear anymore about it, I won’t say anymore about it and I’m not gonna fucking argue with you or anybody else about it. I’m right. Frank Black is a man, he fronts a band, so he gets paid more attention and listened to, and his shitfuck behavior gets dismissed as creative genius. The songs are great but that doesn’t mean you’re not an asshole, Frank! I’ll die on this hill but I’ll also throw hands before I do. Come at me.
I present to you, No Aloha, which actually, beautifully illustrates my point. It is also both beautiful and knockout punch effortlessly cool. It’s dreamy, and also like “we’re here to fuck shit up”. How can I express that it’s lovely and also ass kicking in its vague but biting commentary on being a woman in the music industry, and trying to make it in a band made up of all women (I think they’ve had a dude drummer in their line up from time to time to be fair, but still). It’s about how people that gave her the time of day during her Pixies tenure don’t give a shit about her now “No bye, no aloha, gone with a rock promoter” and how the perils of womanhood impact her creative output “motherhood means mental freeze, freezeheads, no aloha”. Think about what no aloha means. No hello. No goodbye. The disrespect. Ugh. Fuck yes to putting this out there unabashedly.
Obviously, Cannonball, the song that exploded my right ear, is iconic. If you don’t immediately recognize its bassline then I regret to inform you that you need to brush up on your general pop culture knowledge and you stand literally no chance of ever placing at any kind of trivia night. But most importantly, where have you been, and what have you been doing? And are you okay? Genuinely, you’re missing out. The whole thing about them is that musically they are just making some NOISE, and rocking so hard, but Kim’s voice is also so gentle and smooth. Like warm molten wax, or thick maple syrup and butter soaking into a perfect pancake. And she’s harmonizing with her own twin sister, who has the same voice? It’s too many textures but they’re polar opposites. It overwhelms and soothes at the same time. It’s quite an experience. So get it in your ears already.
There are some really lo-fi dulled down tracks, that are really tender and only a band of women could make them. Do You Love Me Now? Literally a low energy bass-led ballad earnestly asking someone if they want to get back together. It’s heart on sleeve girl bravery: I still love you and I don’t care if this doesn’t work out for me, I’m gonna say it. Such a poignant question, followed by a command:
“Does love ever end?
When two hearts are torn away?
Or does it go on?
And beat strong anyway?
You’ve loved me before
Do you love me now?
Come on come on come back to me
Right now”
It finishes with this cascade of harmonies. And I adore it.
My favorite track, and favorite story. Drivin’ on 9. A little ditty! Who doesn’t love a ditty? Again I need to talk about Kim’s voice. It’s like. It’s like. What is it like? When you toast a marshmallow and then squish it between a graham cracker and melted chocolate. It’s like, a smooth whiskey, probably (I don’t like whiskey). It’s like a tiny bird just landed on your hand for the briefest moment. It’s so delicate and precious and you don’t know how such a voice comes out of anyone’s mouth, but especially not hers, because she’s so tough and cool. The strings in the song make me want to die in the best way. Like when people say they died and went to heaven. They pluck it AND they use the bows. Why do I love it so much? Probably because it’s a song about driving and thinking. That’s my favorite thing to do.
“Drivin’ on 9
Lookin’ out my windowsill
Wonderin’ if I want you still
Wonderin’ what’s mine”
I last saw them play at Cannery Ballroom, and the most wonderful thing(s) happened. Firstly, they played this track, so I was happy to begin with. But there was some issue, like one of the violins was missing or broken or not able to be mic’d up correctly or something, I forget. So, Kelley Deal SANG the violin solo. And got it dead on. I cried. These women are just the coolest to ever do it.
I write these reviews because I fundamentally have a problem with the makeup of music critics being made up of men. And I notice looking back how these records and tracks are interconnected with trash men who have acted trash to me or others. I have things to say. I take issue with how they’re written as though their subjective opinions are gospel to be consumed as objective fact. This dynamic can make or break someone’s career when it’s their art and creative output that they’ve poured their heart and soul into. It’s no coincidence that music overall, but rock and alternative music in particular is made up of majority white men, too. Some with self-proclaimed “good taste” can just label it good or bad when it’s not necessarily made for someone that looks like them. These reviews are my experience and my opinion and it’s okay with me if you do or don’t agree, if you love a record that I hate, or if you hate a record I love. But more voices are important and remembering that they’re subjective opinions is pretty fucking important. Hearing someone’s passion (or lack of) about a record is more valuable than hearing their self-importance or gravitas. The Rolling Stone Top 500 is fundamentally flawed in how it’s compiled because of who it’s compiled by, and so I’m deconstructing it one review at a time, noting that as a white woman, the addition of my voice isn’t the full answer or even a big part of the answer. But like I said, I have things to say, and I hope if you have things to say, whoever you are, you’ll share too. But here we are: it’s just proving my point. I’ll be writing one review of The Breeders, but two for The Pixies.
I’m just doing what Kim did when she got sick of the bullshit with Frank Black and The Pixies and decided to do it her way. Nowhere near as loud, nowhere near as cool, and I expect your eardrums will survive my reviews in tact.
Signing off with these words from my favorite “girl” band:
“I see a boy I know
His hair's on fire
The whole world I discovered
If you're so special, why aren't you dead?
I just wanna get along
I just wanna get along
I just wanna get along
Wave bye bye
Cus it ain’t never coming down now”

why you can't use vanilla extract in place of sugar, an essay
for @https-true-egoist
For the most part, ingredient substitutions in baking are perfectly fine - you find something similar to the ingredient you won't be using and occasionally make alterations to quantities to make sure you get all the right chemicals in yor recipe. But in the case of vanilla extract and sugar, the compounds are so fundamentally different that a substitution physically wouldn't work.
The first, most glaring issue, is that sugar is a solid while vanilla extract is a liquid. And while sometimes you can use a sugar syrup (eg honey or maple syrup) in place of some of your sugar, vanilla extract is essentially water. Thus, the substitution would essentially wreck the texture of whatever you were trying to make, and the texture of a batter is strangely important. Take the time I used water in my cupcakes instead of milk, resulting in a thinner batter. The watery cupcakes rose differently, expanding outwards and over the liner versus making a nice dome. Or in cookies, where a thinner dough will spread more versus a thick batter that will stay in a ball.
Secondly, vanilla extract is in no world sweet. I don't know what you were thinking saying "they're both sweet." It's actually mostly alcohol and water, which is what they used to extract and suspend the flavor compounds. A nutrition label for vanilla extract says that there's 1.6g of carbohydrate per 13g of extract - that's about 10% sugar. Pure cane sugar is, well, 100% carbohydrate. So even if you wanted to do a substitution, you'd have to use 10 times as much vanilla extract (by weight) as sugar, which would result in the most atrociously vanilla flavored (and expensive) baked good ever. There's a reason why you use only about a teaspoon of vanilla in your baked goods - it's potent, and designed to be so.
And if you didn't use enough vanilla extract you'd be missing out on the sugar, which adds more than sweetness. It contributes to structure, creaming it with butter or whipping it in with egg whites adds structure (eg. cakes, meringues). It also contributes to the caramelization and maillard reactions that aid in browning and make that delightful golden brown crust that tastes so good.
And of course, my favorite reason - sugar substitutions are delightfully sketchy. This comes down to the chemistry of the sugar itself and how the slight differences in structure lead to different behaviors. Take for example a little food science experiment I did a few years ago, where I used maltose instead of sucrose. I'll add the chemical structures below so you can compare them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See how similar they look? They even have the same chemical formula. On a molecular level they're so very similar, so it should be fine to use one in place of the other, right? Wrong. Cookies made with sucrose (cane sugar) worked just fine. Cookies made with maltose ended up melting over the tray and down into the oven. The subtle differences in chemical structure (the 5-ring versus 6-ring) make the behaviors so different in how the molecules interact with each other and with other molecules. Maltose is more powdery, whereas sucrose is crystalline, and the differences go on. Sugar substitutes that actually work definitely exist, but it's not as intuitive as it might seem.
So, if two very similar structures behave so differently, you'd understand why vanillin, alcohol, water, and a tiny bit of sucrose wouldn't work at all. Here are the structures to prove my point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The majority of vanilla extract is nothing like sugar, so it won't work like sugar, and more likely than not it will just wreak havoc upon your recipe in the quantities necessary to replace the sugar.
And that's why you can't use vanilla extract to replace sugar. I completely condone Aspen's attempt to kill you for doing so. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
sorry for derailing into chem nerd territory at the end i couldn't resist

hi marie! what's your favorite food? hope you're having a good day x
oh, i love a good stir fry! i will fry veggies and eat them with rice or noodle all day, every day. i've also been super obsessed with cauliflower lately, esp. as a chicken substitute. like fake cauliflower chicken wings?? *chef kiss* cauliflower mac & cheese ? that's hot. i'm not vegetarian or vegan but cauliflower recipes go so hard. ghost brocoli, you are the love of my life etc etc. it's not healthy, but i love a good breakfast sandwich for lunch. let me fry some bacon in maple syrup and put some hot sauce on some eggs, one slice of cheese and some avocado in there? that truly is heaven. i love a good salad too. lots of veggies, some nuts, a couple of slices of granny smith apples and a balsamic vinegar vinaigrette? is there anything better in this world? when i was a kid, i hated breakfast food, so my mom would make me salads in the morning to eat lmao. still not a toast or cereal fan tbh. if i have breakfast at all, it's a banana, spinach & peanut butter smoothie. i really love spicy food in general too? like, make me cry with that shit idc. i will eat it and enjoy it while simultaneously suffering. i love anything with garlic. i could literally just eat garlic bread as a full meal, i love it so much. that's one of my ultimate lazy meals actually. which... not the greatest of choices in terms of a balanced diet, but sometimes you're sad and there's not much in the fridge, yk? i could also eat basil leaves like crisps, i'm so unhinged about that. i love anything with cilantro and i feel so sad for people who have the cilantro as soap gene thing cause y'all are missing out. popcorn is probably my favourite snack. i worked in a movie theatre for ten years and everyone i worked with got sick of the smell, sick of eating it, but not me. never. i could eat popcorn every day. i don't, but i coud. idk if it's because i love going to the movies that much or if it's just that good but.... i can't buy nutella, or whatever other brands there is, because i will eat it like pudding. it's dangerous so i don't even tempt myself. i love apple desserts? apple crumble? apple pie? apple turnovers? all of it. most importantly, i'm canadian so i love poutine and i sweeten EVERYTHING with maple syrup. fuck sugar, who needs that ??
god, it's 6pm and i haven't eaten today yet, can you tell????? why am i writing you a novel about food djfknvdfjkk

Healthy Trader Joes Shopping List
Healthy Trader Joe’s Shopping List https://ift.tt/bnBCMaO Sharing some of my favorite healthy products from Trader Joe’s! Hi friends! How are ya? I hope you’re having an amazing day! I have some calls this morning, and then am getting a massage… can’t.wait. For today’s post, I wanted to share some of my favorite healthy finds from Trader Joe’s! During the time-that-shall-not-be-named, the Pilot did all of our grocery shopping because he was “out in the world” and the girls and I were at home. We also got a lot of grocery delivery from Whole Foods and Thrive Market. It kind of stuck around for years after that, until I realized that I actually love grocery shopping and had missed it. So now, we alternate, since we both like going to the store in person — you find so many more fun things that way! Trader Joe’s has some amazing things, and here are some of my favorite healthier finds. While I believe that ALL foods should fit into your lifestyle, this is a list of things that have less ingredients and offer more on the nutritional front (with a few of the soul-hugging must-haves in here, too). Here’s the list! Healthy Trader Joe’s Shopping List PRODUCE/COLD: – Organic fruit: we go for berries, bananas, grapes, apples, and anything seasonal and exciting, like cherries, melon, stone fruits, or rambutan – Organic veggies: sweet potatoes, zucchini, celery, carrots, bell peppers, squash – Edamame – Root vegetable hash – Cold-pressed green juice – Mirepoix (makes soups and casseroles SO easy) – Onions, garlic, and ginger – Medjool dates – Organic guacamole – Salsa! We love their pico and their Salsa Especial BEANS, SPICES, PANTRY STAPLES: – ALL organic beans: each week, I get white beans, kidney beans, black beans, and garbanzo beans – Organic chicken broth – Organic jasmine rice – Organic pasta from Italy – ALL the spices! We love their oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and Everything But the Bagel seasoning – Canned tuna, sardines, anchovies – Almond butter – Organic peanut butter – Organic raspberry or strawberry preserves – Chocolate chips – Maple syrup – Oatmeal – Canned tomatoes – Olives – Artichokes BARS + SNACKS: – Date and Chocolate bars – Trail mix – Chomps jerky – Organic dried fruit and fruit leather DAIRY + EGGS: – Kerrygold unsalted butter – Almond milk – Full fat organic Greek yogurt – Organic cheese sticks – Raw or aged cheeses; their parm is amazing – Organic pasture-raised eggs (I prefer the Vital Farms eggs from Whole Foods but these work in a pinch) FROZEN + SWEET TREATS: – Hold the cone! Vegan mini ice creams. These are SO good and the perfect size for a sweet bite – Gone Bananas or Gone Berry Crazy ; fruit simply covered in chocolate and frozen! – Organic frozen berries mix; perfect for smoothies – Cauliflower rice; love this for soups, smoothies, and scrambles – Almond flour chocolate chip cookies mix BREAD + TORTILLAS: – Corn tortillas – Sourdough bread for sandwiches – A sweet treat! They often have gluten-free dessert options with fairly simple ingredients MEAT: – We typically get all of our meat from Butcher Box and Whole Foods, but I do like Trader Joe’s organic chicken thighs and organic deli meat I think that’s it! I just wrote that list off the top of my head with things we always buy! Do you have any Trader Joe’s faves? Where do you get most of your groceries? Here’s a list of my Favorite Trader Joe’s products. Have a great day and I’ll see ya soon! xoxo Gina For more healthy meal ideas and recipes, download my free meal plan and recipe pack for busy friends! Kitchen Mouse, 4503 N Figueroa St., Los Angeles (Montecito Heights), CA 90065
Tumblr media
Kitchen Mouse has expanded again, with a cute walk-up coffee & bakery spot in Montecito Heights (near Mount Washington and south Highland Park). There is a small kitchen, so you can also order off a limited menu: vegan breakfast sandwich, vegan waffles, bagel sandwiches, and fancy toasts. The pastry case had two shelves of gluten-free pastries (muffins, brownies, cookies, scones, cakes) and two shelves of pastries with gluten (vegan bagels, vegan croissants, danish). There’s also drip coffee, cold brew, espresso drinks, tea, and hot chocolate.
Order at the window and pay first. Prices are on the higher side but they do make their own pastries and their own schmears, and offer lots of gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan, and even nut-free options.
Buckwheat waffle, vegan, gluten-free ($9) with Earl Grey whip ($1.50): A thick, Belgian style waffle with vegan butter and real maple syrup. Excellent – I didn’t miss the gluten. The buckwheat waffle (made with buckwheat, oat, corn flour and flax, maple & coconut oil) has a nutty flavor and the waffle was moist with crisp edges. They provided plenty of vegan Earl Grey whip which did taste like Earl Grey and wasn’t too sweet. The waffle took about 15 minutes and they weren’t busy.
Cappuccino ($5): No foam art, strong and very bitter, wouldn’t get again
This is meant to be a takeout spot though there are three outdoor picnic tables (shared with Taco Fiesta?). They also sell some KM merch and coffee beans. They have their own coffee roast (Ethiopian). Parking was easy to find in the strip mall.
4 out of 5 stars

Picture the scene: you have been cooking some delicious pancakes for yourself and your family to enjoy for breakfast or brunch. Some family members smother their pancakes in butter maple syrup, while others prefer to eat them with a pile of cut fruit. But the thing is, you know that you want something different.
So, you decide to bring out some whipped cream and gently apply a beautiful dollop to the top of your pancakes. All of a sudden, the room goes silent. It is at this point that you know you have stumbled upon the perfect accompaniment to a stack of pancakes. And now, everyone wants to get in on that whipped cream game too!
There is no denying that whipped cream has the power to transform many different sweet treats, desserts and even hot drinks. The sheer simplicity of it has the power to turn almost anything into a culinary work of art.
Now it is time to celebrate the very essence of whipped cream on this day, National Whipped Cream Day!
History of National Whipped Cream Day
For those who have never sampled the delight that is whipped cream, they have certainly missed out on something great! In a nutshell, whipped cream is a type of sweetened cream that gets “whipped” by a whisk or mixer until it becomes light and fluffy. The air that is added through the whipping process creates something that is altogether unique and delightful.
To achieve the best results, a cream that contains no lower than 35% fat is getting whipped. The process of creating whipped cream is simple, involving either a hand whisk or mechanical agitation with a high-speed mixer, although hand whisking would certainly be a lot of work.
While some people prefer the plain taste of whipped cream, others take things a stage further. It is often possible to find whipped cream that is flavored with ingredients such as cinnamon sugar, vanilla, or chocolate.
Today, there are also dairy-free variants of whipped cream for people who struggle with milk intolerances or do not eat dairy for other reasons. Most of these are marketed as vegan-friendly and can still be delicious.
Many people might think that whipped cream is a relatively modern culinary invention. But, believe it or not, the origins of this tasty treat date back to the 16th century!
The earliest known evidence of whipped cream appears in the form of recipes that hail from 1549. An Italian Renaissance cook, Cristoforo di Messisbugo, listed whipped cream as an ingredient in one of his recipes. His cookbook, Banchetti, Composizioni di Vivande e Apparecchio Generale, refers to something called “milk snow”, which is believed to be a primitive form of whipped cream.
Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, whipped cream was also known as “snow cream”, which is a delightful and endearing term for it. The earliest known literary references to whipped cream seem to date back to 1629 in France (crème fouettée) and 1673 in England.
National Whipped Cream Day is actually a nod to pay homage to the birthday of Reddi-wip founder Aaron Lapin, who was born in 1914. It was in 1948 that he invented Reddi-wip, which is now one brand name of the aerosol canned version of sweetened whipped creams and also non-dairy whipped toppings.
