Effortless (Rock Lee x Reader x Shikamaru)

Synopsis: Shikamaru is, regrettably, on a team with you and Lee

Notes: Eh, @simply-trash5, you’ve been real good to me lately. And you had a request in so this is my little gift to you. Somewhere along the way this turned into Shikamaru x Reader x Lee soooo

Missions with the two of you had to be, at best, a love hate relationship. On one hand, Shikamaru could lay back and let you and Lee handle most of the heavy lifting. You both sure were eager enough, and the sheer fact that you were constantly competing meant for some pretty high quality work. But on the other hand, you were also loud which made for poor napping conditions and your constant contesting meant that you listened to very little that Shikamaru had to say. And while he would normally give a nod of approval at other ninjas wasting time, every once in a while he would need you and Lee to focus. Shikamaru, of course, would seldomly get it.

Open-plain fighting had never been the style of the ninja. The ninja tradition was, after all, one of stealth and silence, but you and Lee took a particular kind of pleasure in the challenge. Shikamaru wasn’t happy in the slightest: you all got caught, but despite the poor circumstance, you and Rock Lee were having a blast.

“Severe Leaf Hurricane!” You watched, mid combat, as Lee’s opponent was forced into the air. Your teammate landed a series of blows across the ninja’s torso before Lee forced the enemy ninja back towards the ground. The ground broke beneath him. Lee looked over his sounder, thumb held high out in front of him. “Did you see that?”

“That was awesome!” You cried. Another ninja ran up behind you. Shikamaru sat a ways away. He sighed, shadow jutsu snaking across the ground after him. “But not as awesome as this!” Shikamaru’s jutsu caught the ninja’s ankle at the last second, and as the enemy fell, you landed a chakra-enhanced blow to his gut, launching your opponent into the air. And even as Lee continued to fight off his own attackers, he threw his arms up in a loud cheer.

“Yes! Shikamaru coming in with the assist!”

“Shikamaru with the assist!” You echoed, flipping a particularly burly ninja over your shoulder. Shikamaru shook his head, fighting off a small smile that dared to tug at his lips.

“Oh shut up. You two are the reason why we’re in this mess in the first place…” Shikamaru grumbled. But his complaint was, as he expected, ignored.

“Twelve!”

“Sucks to be you, Lee, I got thirteen!”

“No you did not, that last one got up twice and you know it!” Shikamaru weaved a variety of hand signs.

“Okay, guys. Final gambit.” He announced. An enemy ninja spotted him crouched a few feet away and charged. You kneed him in the gut and with another blow to the face the ninja collapsed on the ground.

“Shikamaru,” You frowned, turning for a split second, “You know that’s not what we call it.” You ran back to the action and once again, your team leader sighed. Shikamaru shook his head and resisted the urge to stand up and walk away.

“You know what to call it, Shikamaru!” Lee practically sang. Shikamaru buried his face in his hands. He would have to redo his hand signs.

“I’m not calling it that.” You and Lee locked eyes, exchanging disapproving glances. Your lips turned into a deep pout.

“Then we’re not doing it.”

Shikamaru sat back on his heels, staring out at the battle. Despite the massive number of attackers, you and Lee were handling yourselves just fine. The sun peeked out from behind the horizon and Shikamaru suddenly became very aware of the bags under his eyes. Your team had been stuck in a game of cat and mouse all night and the idea of sleep became very alluring to your team leader. He took a deep breath in and began to weave his signs yet again.

“Fine!” He groaned, once again focusing his chakra, “The floor is lava!” You and Lee glanced at each other before springing up into the air. Shikamaru’s shadows flooded the battlefield causing each ninja to become stuck in their places. You breathed in, a concentration of chakra building in your mouth. A small orb of energy built up in front of your open lips. And as your lungs filled, you tilted your head back to fire the powerful blast of energy.

“Rah!” You were launched farther into the air by the force. The ground below shattered. The red glow of your chakra bomb glowed in Lee’s eyes, his hair whipping around by the turbulent wind of the explosion. When you landed, you both landed together, skidding on your heels before collapsing happily in the grass just far enough away from the field for comfort.

Shikamaru reluctantly trudged over, your forms getting larger and larger as he approached. Every step felt elongated and each of his limbs felt heavy. Shikamaru stood over you and Lee. A few small wisps of hair had fallen out of his ponytail and dangled down from his face. His head blocked the sun from your face.

“We’re done already?” Shikamaru’s lips vibrated. He bent down to lay next to you and Lee. Crossing his arms, he closed his eyes.

“We damn better be.”

Best Ongoing Team Books of 2018 - In text because I cannot make it in video

Okay, so my mic is broken, I have barely time to make it work with how many ever hours I’m working recently, so screw it. Last part of my promised list is long overdue anyway, so I’ll just drop it as a text. Apologies for this but yeah, sometimes stuff just piles up. I hope you’ll still enjoy my picks and check the 3 parts that made it to the video

Welcome to Best Books of 2018, the long-awaited final part. I’m terribly sorry it took me so, so terribly long but I had been forced to take many over hours at my day job and it just ate in my time. The rules are as before. The book must still be ongoing in 2018, even if only for a single issue. It also must have more than two issues published in two thousand eighteen. However, if a book got relaunched as effectively the same title, they count as one. This time we’re doing team books. So if you can, go check those titles out at your local store.

Number Ten: Super Sons and its continuation, Adventures of the Super Sons. Work of writers Peter Tomasi and Patrick Gleason with artwork by Carlo Barberi with issue twelve of the first series draw by Tyler Kirkham. Super Sons continue to be an absolute joy. The greatest asset of this story is that Jon and Damian are written as a pair of actual kids, with behavior we would find too childish with other people but appropriate with them. Which only adds charm to an already book that captures joys of being a kid and going on adventures and that embraces silver age weirdness with all kinds of strange stuff, from a bunch of alien kids idealizing Earth supervillains and modeling themselves after them to an alien versions of Cain and Abel and their House of Secret Mysteries. It is a book that you can just pick up, relax and enjoy, lose yourself in fluffy fun. Its time is limited as Adventures is just a mini but I think if there is one title on this list that is just pure escapism, bar themes touched in an issue where our heroes meet their future selves, it is this one.

Number Nine: House of Whispers by writer Nalo Hopkins and artist Domonike Stanton. One of my favorite out of the new Sandman Universe books, it tells a story of a spell gone wrong that results in the tied fate of goddess Erzulie from Vodou religion and girl named Latoya. The former ends up trapped in the Dreaming, cut from her worshippers and desperately needing to come back before she starves without worship. The latter loses her soul in the same accident and now is affected by Cotard’s delusion, a mental disorder that makes a living person believe they’re dead and worse, she can spread it like an infection. While absolutely fantastic with the weaved narrative I will say that at the time it might be even too heavy as the parts that deal with people affected by the delusion, especially Latoya and her girlfriend Maggie, often feel so outright depressing I had to put the book down and take a break. It is not a bad thing, not every comic book has to just make you feel entertained, especially not one aiming at evoking different emotions. But I need to recommend this one with a warning it is not for everyone as people who already feel down might only feel worse. Still, if you are looking for a book either heavily using themes from religion by far underexplored by literature and pop culture in a respectful way or for a book that might leave you shaken and made think, appreciate your life even, this is a book for you.

Number Eight is a tie: Justice League Dark by writer James Tynion the Fourth and artists Alvaro Martinez and Daniel Sampere as well as Justice League Odyssey by writer Joshua Williamson and artists Stjepan Sejic and Philipe Briones. Two of the new Justice League titles have their problems, I’ll admit it. The main villain in Justice League Dark comes off as invincible for the sake of it and the establishment of the Sisterhood of the Sleight hand only to destroy it rubs me the wrong way and Odyssey feels to have missed its impact moment due to delays and artist change. However, both books are still excellent in what they set to do, opening this new age in Justice League books and bringing them back to the flagship role. Be it dark atmosphere of JLD that isn’t mitigated by inclusion of either Detective Chimp or Wonder Woman, in fact it is a stroke of genius to have her confront the darker side of magic, or the outlandish space opera of Odyssey, with super likable cast playing game of cat and mouse with Darkseid himself, the books do bring new to the table and truly make the Justice League currently one of the strongest if not the strongest lines in the big two.

Number Seven: Rogue & Gambit and its continuation Mr & Mrs. X by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Pere Perez on the former and Oscar Balduza and David Lopez. I’m counting it as one book even if an important part, the wedding, took place in a different title and was fairly controversial. But Kelly Thompson has really shown that she feels the two and their relationship and uses as much of their history as possible to build on and inform said relationship. It is in how natural it comes off as, how strong their bond is but also how unafraid of testing it through their adventures Kelly Thompson is that really makes this book so unique. With the cancellation of X-Men: Red and Exiles and with how Uncanny X-Men and Age of X-Man seem in a contest who can drop more balls, this book is now the best ongoing in the X-Line and you will be doing yourself a disservice if you won’t check it out.

Number Six: Justice League by writers Scott Snyder and James Tynion the Fourth and artists Jim Cheung, Jorge Jimenez, Doug Mankhe, Mike Janin, Francis Manapul, Fazer Irving and Guillem March. This book decided to bring the Justice League back to its greatness and to my great surprise, it succeeded. Scott Snyder’s over the top imagination is a perfect fit for this title and in just a few issues he proved he is not afraid of breaking established boundaries and showing us that cosmology of DC Universe is much greater and more amazing than we might have thought, that everything we thought we know hides more secrets and there is always a new adventure right behind the corner. It asks important questions that, while not intended to be political, by Snyder’s own admission, I feel are still questions about life, a current state of the world and our expectations and ourselves. Upon seeing how flawed the world is, how flawed other people are, how flawed, in the end, we ourselves are, what is a correct course of action? Deny it and try to grind yourself into the idea of perfection you want to be even if it is impossible? Embrace your worst and care only about yourself? Or accept you have flaws, that you feel pain and trauma and realize you can still be a good person regardless? That is the theme of Justice League that makes me enjoy this book so much.

Also, they have hired Ferdinand the Minotaur to work at their cafeteria, that’s awesome.

Number Five: The Dreaming by writer Simon Spurrier and artist Bilquis Evely. The Dreaming is in peril. Dream of Endless has left his dominion, there is a hole in it through which strange things come, citizens find themselves in state of unrest and all beloved characters, from Lucien and Matthew to Merv Pumpkinhead and Eve to Cain and Abel are set on a course that will challenge them and will change them in unexpected ways, all while old faces like Glob and Brute come back and new ones like mysterious Dora and merciless Judge Gallows leave their mark on the place. The Dreaming plays with obvious political undertones but on a meta sense, it is another case of what Simon Spurrier is driven to do, to deconstruct the darker corners of comics and try to explore questions of responsibility and morality through it like he did with Legion and X-Force. This new, heavier, darker take on the Dreaming sucked me in instantly and I really hope the ride Spurrier has prepared for us is a long one.

Number Four: Exiles by writer Saladin Ahmed and artists Javier Rodrigues, Rod Reis and Joe Quinones. Exiles had another short-living comeback and it saddens me to see that it has already been cancelled, though not before qualifying on this list. I love Exiles as a series and a concept and the return with all-new cast and Blink was a welcome one. With adventures that are in equal parts fun and serious and characters with such amazing charm as a cartoon kid Wolverine or Valkyrie. What’s more is that the book had such amazing creative artwork, with Rodriguez especially giving it his all and creating some amazing visuals that truly matched increasingly crazier visions that Ahmed has weaved in front of him through the script. This was a top-notch creative team that I sure hope we’ll see them team-up once again on another project in the future. Meanwhile, while brief it it was still a pleasure to come back to this team of weirdos and outcasts hopping between dimensions, one crazier than the other.

Number Three: Wild Storm by writer Warren Ellis and artist John Davis Hunt. Now here is a book that benefits from its stated twenty four issues run. Wild Storm is a slow burn. But it is by far one of the most glorious slow burns in the history of comics. Ellis continues to create a gritty narrative that combines aliens, conspiracies, secret agencies, technological inventions and movie-like decompressed storytelling into a chilling, dark story that absolutely dominates with the atmosphere. The vision of Wildstorm Universe Ellis and Hunt created for us is absolutely captivating and the feel of the world at the verge of total war between two agencies that long time ago stopped caring for common folk, while Jacob Marlowe, Jenny Sparks, and John Lynch, each in their own way, race to stop them or deal with problems they unleash, is unlike any other. There is plain and simply no other book like this on the shelves right now and it is very unlikely there will be such a book soon after it ends.

Number Two: The Terrifics by writer Jeff Lemire and artists Ivan Reis, Evan Doc Sharner, Joe Bennett, Dale Eaglesham. Out of all New Age of Heroes Books this is undeniably the best one. A loving tribute to the original Fantastic Four stories that finds a new quality through use of characters that may fill similar archetypes but are different enough that each brings their own thing to the table, creating new dynamics that liven up known narratives while at the same time the artists manage to get creative, especially the issue that divides each page into a sort of camera following each of the four protagonists one panel per person and uniting them and dividing as they join together or split up, pushing the very boundaries of graphic storytelling as we know it. It is also a book full of warmth and joy and optimism we often do not see in books like that. It is truly a title that has a heart and imagination on its side and it is using them to their full potential.

Honorable Mentions: West Coast Avengers, Champions, Teen Titans

And our Number One is Runaways by writer Rainbow Rowell and artists Kris Anka and David Lafuente. It couldn’t be anything else. Runaways this year was plain and simply the best book on the shelves. Kris Anka’s beautiful art brings to life Rainbow Rowell amazing heart for these characters as she lets them face new challenges in their lives, creating story if teenagers at the verge of adulthood as they try to wrestle less with supervillains and more with their own fears and insecurities and this feeling of childhood and innocence lost for superhero life they never wanted, all as they try to rebuild and maintain their family. It is a story where greatest victories are not supervillain battles, which they seem to win by a fluke most of the time anyway, but to take a step forward, overcome your fear and doubt and admit to yourself that yes, you are worthy of happiness and you will be happy. In that Runaways is without a doubt the book that speaks to me the most and one I wait for every month. I cannot recommend this book enough.

So here are my final picks. I’m exhausted. I will say that recently all stuff in my life made working on the videos harder, especially now that i’m trying, against any better reason to record myself  and I might not be able to do it as regularly. I might think of reinventing the format and maybe relegate the channel to a different role in relation to my blog, which I think is by now much more popular. I still have learned a lot in that time of doing these videos and I wish to continue, maybe with a more focused vision. Thank you all for being so long with me and putting up with my nosense and rest assured, I shall return.

Episode 2: In Another Country

I hope everyone stays hydrated, whether or not they’re currently suffering through summer! I’ve got my set up all prepared (with the tissues and pillows being the most important, but that’s preference). Hope everyone else is comfy as we start episode two! 

We’re gonna need it. 

Looks like we’re jumping right in. OOF. Ibe’s face ruins me. He’s so worried about Eiji. Someone needs to hold my hand, my heart hurts and I’m already prepared to cry everywhere. 

None of this was ever supposed to happen, Charlie. Just save Skip and Eiji --just save them, Charlie. Save them.

Ibeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Your decision to cover American gangs will bring you so much heartache. So much. Q AQ

Not even half a minute into the episode and my boy Shorter makes an appearance. My heart. Look at that lighting... the glow... the colors. Oh my god, just slay me with the colors. Hnnnnnnng. Also: three motorcycles. I am secretly hoping that Shorter’s just casually commandeering Ash’s since Ash rudely yoinked his away. I can dream, can’t I? Disappointed how they cut out some of Shorter’s insightful dialogue, but time constraints, I understand.

Shorter, your gut is very spot-on. 

Seriously, Mappa could just murder me with these gorgeous backgrounds. Look at the attention to detail. I know this is a hostage situation but let’s take a moment to bathe in the beauty that is this (old, abandoned) scenery. Aaaaah.

And here is Arthur, trying to look intimidating and ominous by hiding in the shadows, but he’s sadly overshadowed by everything else. As usual. Is anyone else impressed with all the effort that goes into everything? I’ll try not to wax lyrical but look at all those gang tags and planks left around, the cracked tiles and the smudges --someone had to draw that.

Everyone knows it’s a trap, Arthur. You’re clever, but you lack a certain degree of self-awareness and ability...

but do keep talking. Your only positive point is your smooth, buttery baritone. Nice. I will enjoy your villainous monologue. It will match your laughably stereotypical evil ‘do.

Truly, subtlety isn’t your strong point, Arthur. 

Also, lying. But please, lie more. 

Eiji and Skipper together is my favorite thing. Skipper is this tiny, determined ball of controlled kick-ass. Eiji is utterly out of his depth and looking around curiously because boy, Japan wasn’t like this!

These two cuties. Please.

Fuck ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooff.

PUNCH HIS FACE IN!!!

*WILL SMITHS THIS SCENE* I have so many feelings, I have so many things I want to scream about, I want to dissect just how much this one line underlines the differences between Ash and Arthur despite the fact there are plenty of superficial similarities between the two and I just --HNNNNNNG. *clenches fist* I HAVE FEELINGS AND THEY ARE STRONG.

Skiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip. Eiiiiiiiiiiiiiijiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. So many props to Eiji for staying relatively calm in a frankly terrifying situation.

I am the worst person, I’m sorry, because I spent this entire slow pan up Ash laughing hysterically. This is secondhand embarrassment at its peak. Pffffft.

Poor Eiji. Pffffffffffffffft.

Marvin, you are honestly dumber than a bag of bricks. Beautiful wounded gazelle gambit, Ash. I love how Skipper is jumping with excitement, cheering Ash on, and Eiji’s holding himself like he needs protection from the latent gross that emanates from Marvin constantly.

*side whispers* This is it.

The turning point.

*blows kisses at Mappa* GORGEOUS.

I’m breaking things up a bit since I’m just. Full of feelings. Eiji making a decision, inspired by Ash. Skip automatically assuming Eiji’s making a Last Stand, because that’s what he is: a fighter to the last. 

But Eiji is a civilian, and he doesn’t fight the way Skip does. 

And this is beautifully animated, and it definitely shows Eiji’s resolve and determination... but it bugs me.

Because they gave one of Eiji’s lines to Skip.

They turned a line that showed Eiji’s determination, his acknowledgement that he could severely injure himself --could even cripple himself --but he was willing to bet it all on a chance, and made it into an argument Skipper has against Eiji’s Hail Mary decision. 

And I hate it.

I really love the soundtrack they use, though. Nice.

The Donor by @spaztronautwriter //  Felicity Smoak has always dreamed of being a mother and she isn’t going to let a little thing like men stop her from making that dream come true. Having a baby by herself might just be biting off a little more than she can chew, but one way or the other it’s about to change her whole life. || Okay so I guess this is technically not the angstiest fic out there, but it stresses me the fuck o u t. It will have you screaming at your phone telling these idiots to get together and there’s only three chapters so far.

Opinion: Polaris (Lorna Dane) writer pros/cons (2012 to present)

I’ve considered making a post like this for several months, and I’m starting to hate myself for dwelling on negatives lately, so it’s time I do this.

Here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of various writers and/or their runs regarding use of Polaris. I’m only doing since 2012 because to be frank, I haven’t read everything Lorna’s been in, and I’m only really concerned with recent use anyway.

Just because I list a con doesn’t necessarily mean I think that con is a major travesty. Some are huge problems, some are minor things that are included for sake of honesty. This also does not mean my views won’t change over time. I might spot a problem at some future point that doesn’t look like a problem right now. Could even be something I currently think is good. Conversely, something that’s bad to me now might seem good later based on how things change.

Mike Carey (X-Men Legacy, “Five Miles South of the Universe”)

Pros

Subtly confirmed Polaris is a mutant again with her powers

Confirmed Magneto is, in fact, Lorna’s father after the question was left open for too long

Let Lorna and Magneto interact for the first time in about a decade

Let Lorna demonstrate fine power capabilities again (altering molecules to patch up space station)

Got Lorna and the rest of the Starjammers back to Earth after over a year of limbo so they could take part in X-Men/Marvel stories there

Cons

Had Polaris mind-controlled yet again, by Friendless

Peter David

Pros

Provided Lorna’s origin story, after over 40 years without one

Provided Lorna interacting with her brother Pietro for most of ANXF, and sister Wanda for one issue of ANXF

Gave Lorna a leadership role of a team in her own right for the first time in over 40 years (before this, she was “substitute leader” for Havok, Magneto and Madrox)

Teased the notion of a romance between Polaris and Gambit; important, since Havok is literally the only love interest Lorna’s been allowed to have since Iceman in the late 60s while Havok’s had several

Was able to capture the playful “zinger” side of her personality well

At least had a good reason for team costumes for ANXF

Cons

Bias against Magneto meant he tried to keep the two apart, wrote Lorna disparaging Magneto more than once

Opposition to characters he’s writing taking part in bigger events meant Marvel had an excuse to exclude Lorna from Axis and other events

Very poor representation of Lorna’s mental/emotional issues in early parts of All-New X-Factor

ANXF #3-6 increasingly treated Lorna like “leader in name only” with Gambit acting more like the leader and Lorna like a member of his team; e.g. Gambit inviting Danger to the team while Lorna’s written as annoyed but getting no say in the membership of her own team (mostly changed for the better starting with ANXF #7)

Except with ANXF #243, tendency to disregard work of other previous writers and act like things they did are things he’s doing brand new

Prioritized team costumes over costumes that showed character individuality

Marjorie Liu

Pros

Acknowledged Lorna’s history with Iceman as one of his past love interest

Acknowledged Lorna (along with Gambit) had been one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen

Let Lorna talk about things other than Iceman in the few panels she had

Cons

Didn’t acknowledge Lorna’s specific history as the first love interest Iceman had in publication chronology

Didn’t have a moment of Lorna interacting with Nurse Annie (though they did share a panel with no words, sort of acknowledging that history)

Alan Davis (Savage Hulk, “The Man Within”)

Pros

Included Polaris in the story, in effect acknowledging she existed and played a minor role in the original story the arc was based on

Gave her slightly more presence than cameo via version of her imagined by Bruce Banner

Actually acknowledged and used the importance of Lorna’s headgear in the story - something almost nobody does

Cons

I guess... not more presence of Lorna? The “Jean taking Hulk power” mindscape bit would’ve been more interesting with Lorna in her place IMO. All that green and atypical for Marvel to let Lorna be powerful instead of Claremont’s preferred women.

Cullen Bunn

Pros

Got Polaris and Magneto back together interacting as father and daughter

Acknowledged Lorna’s history with both Genosha and Marauders/Malice

Brought Lorna onto X-Men Blue as a teacher for the teen O5 (incl. great few panels in Blue #16)

Let her be team leader of the last X-Men in an alternate future (Deadpool & Mercs for Money)

Awareness of how powerful Lorna can be shown in multiple instances

Able to capture her “darker” side, especially playful dark in Blue #16

Cons

Poor representation of how she would react in certain situations given her history (surprise attack on mansion, discovering the Malice costume suddenly on her body, etc)

Tendency to do opposite of Peter David and make Magneto look good at Lorna’s expense (changed for the better with Blue #15)

Presented X-Men Blue #9 as the big return of Polaris after two years of forced limbo, only to have Havok completely hijack her spotlight (in addition to Havok getting a Blue event focused on him next year)

Having Lorna interact with Havok at all when she needs more time to establish herself without his presence first

Dennis Hopeless (Secret Wars: House of M)

Pros

Acknowledged Lorna as part of the Magnus family/House of M and used it

Demonstrated Lorna with great intellect, strategic thinking, and power use

Showed Lorna providing support for her father and his kingdom

Lorna got to interact with Black Cat, tease idea of working together in thievery

Cons

Pietro treated very poorly, and Magneto poorly in a couple spots, for Lorna’s benefit (not needed)

Not enough of a dynamic with her sister Wanda

Gifted writers

Pros

Excellent representation of Lorna’s dark side and vicious, unfliching support/protection of mutants

Hilarious and awesome training methods for her students on display

Co-leadership role alongside Thunderbird

Though presently low-powered (as needed for a show), versatility and creativity to her power set demonstrated repeatedly

Great moments of Polaris and Dreamer, best friends, working together on missions

Polaris in a romantic relationship (Eclipse) that’s actually good, giving her the care and respect in her own right that Marvel’s almost never given her

Cons

Didn’t make very good use of Lorna’s time in prison (e.g. could’ve forged alliances, made contacts for outside prison) and did it too soon

Brought in a pregnancy storyline way too soon

Randomly, pointlessly killed off Dreamer and all the potential the Polaris and Dreamer duo had

Just generally don’t know how to do character death right, following the godawful comic book philosophy of cheap deaths out of nowhere instead of proper build-up and catharsis seen on countless other TV shows (Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead, etc)

It’s my turn for the annual winter fever and hacking coughing chest cold.

I’m going to digress right now, but you’ll see that this lil story will link my cold and the next subject of discussion today:

When I was in grad school, pure luck gave me a chance to have the first puppy I ever raised. She was half Dalmatian and half Pit Bull and gorgeous and strong. Her name was Wee Bea. While she was still in her first year, I came down with one of these awful colds. So bad, I was shaking with chills even covered with the few blankets we had (we were poor students and didn’t have much in the way of bedding).

As I was laying there and my teeth were actually chattering, Bea climbed up on the bed and sprawled her full body length over mine. Which she had never done before as she preferred curling up under the blankets next to me when she was allowed on the bed. She stayed on top until my fever broke later that night, and just like that slipped off the bed and curled up in her basket.

Her work there was done.

  So you can understand that I haven’t needed much persuading when it comes to the magical power of dogs and the depths of feeling that dogs can both feel themselves and engender in people. Depths that I believe are a big part of the magic of  Pugmire.

Which I bring up because this Wednesday afternoon we will be sending out links to the Backer PDF for the Pugmire Core Rulebook to the Kickstarter backers who pledged for it. Eddy and all of us at Onyx Path are just thrilled to be able to get this out where folks can actually read it, and play it, and send us feedback about it!

      TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE: Today a year ago we went out to a freezing cold parking lot on the outskirts of town at 5am to meet a dark green semi hauling unwanted dogs from kill shelters down south. Our big brown buddy had suddenly died right before Christmas, and the house felt empty without a dog in it, so my wife found what looked to be a good fit for us on a rescue website. That morning, Molly came gingering down a ramp from the green semi, and pulled her handler over to us as she enthusiastically greeted her new family. No sound though, not a yip. She still does everything enthusiastically, and has proven to bark really loudly if she needs to warn us. She is a Good Dog.

    This week, Rose and Matt continue to grow into their full time positions with serious work on our infrastructure, and conversations with our Devs. Many Google docs and Excel spreadsheets were started and consulted.

They will both be at MidWinter, and my plan is to have a mini-summit where we look at both current projects and our possible releases for the next three years. I doubt we’ll get into new gamelines, but we’ll be devoting serious thought to the White Wolf lines, and Scion 2e and the Trinity Continuum and how all these lines need to fit together.

So, most of our conversations today were some discussion followed by “we’ll go over this when we’re sitting down at MidWinter“.

RPG Playtests! Onyx Path loves to use MidWinter as a sort of test-lab for our games, and this year is no exception! Eddy Webb will be playtesting Monarchies of Mau, the cat follow-up to the smash-hit Pugmire, as well as a couple of card game projects he has been tinkering with. Rose Bailey will be running a playtest sneak-peak of Cavaliers of Mars, and Neall Raemonn Price may have some Scion 2e goodness to share.

The Onyx Path Gang! Yep, a bunch of us will be at MidWinter, and not only will we be at the intimate Onyx Q&A listed during the events, but we’ll be at our booth in the sales area, at other events, hanging out in our gaming room with the Wrecking Crew, or just sitting back and chatting around the hotel. MidWinter is a great venue to speak with us as it is nowhere near as hectic as GenCon, and we have fewer business commitments. So look for me, Rose, Eddy, Neall, Monica, Matt McElroy, and a bunch of our awesome creative contributors too!
