it's october 31st so it's time for my annual reminder that it's okay if you don't do NaNo.
it's a great event, with lots of benefits and a great, enthusiastic, built-in community. many, many people succeed in their goals in it. i was one of them once upon a time! i wrote blood of the true believer for nano, and everyone in my local chapter was fantastic as support. i try to chuck them a couple of bucks every year to help fund them, because i truly believe the event is largely beneficial.
but it burned me out. i couldn't write for months after. my manuscript went in my proverbial drawer and did not see the light of day for almost a year after.
50k words is a lot in 30 days, no matter what anyone tells you. some people can knock it out easily, some struggle with 10k in the same time. this kind of intensive writing event is not for everyone, for many different reasons. it's not a failure to not participate. it's not a failure to try and not finish or "win". give yourself a break if it's just not for you, no matter how many people around you might be enthusiastically jumping in.
there are often people doing NaNo-light events during november, for people who want the structure and camaraderie but find the word count requirements intimidating. i have run one a couple of times (i don't have time this year), and they can be equally rewarding experiences. if you do have one you host, feel free to add it to this post!
so do NaNo, or not, and don't worry what everyone else is doing. like any other tool meant to help writers be successful, you only need to use it if it works for you.
good luck everyone, whether you do NaNo or not, and write on!

30 Covers, 30 Days 2023: Sign-Ups Open!
Tumblr media
Hey, Wrimos!
It’s that time of the year again: 30 Covers 30 Day Sign-up season! This year, we’re doing things a little bit differently. We’ll still have the classic 30C30D experience in which you get the chance to have a cover designed by a professional graphic designer. Alongside the professional designs though, we’re adding the chance to highlight designers in our community!
So, let’s get all that information rolling!
What’s 30 Covers, 30 Days?
Every November, a handful of Wrimos will be selected to receive a unique cover for their NaNoWriMo Novel! These covers are designed in 96 hours by a group of talented and diverse professional graphic designers, recruited by our amazing 30C30D coordinator, Debbie Millman.
This year, 22 lucky Wrimos will be chosen!
When November hits, you’ll get to see a new cover daily on the forums, as well as the NaNo blog and Instagram! Past covers can be seen here.
How do I get a cover from a professional designer?
All you have to do is fill out this form and nominate your own novel!
Here’s some things to keep in mind:
If you make any mistakes, feel free to edit your previous submission! Make sure you send a copy of the form to yourself at the very end. If you want to remove your submission altogether, please go back in the form and check off the box that asks for removal at the very end.
You do not have to share your real name on the nomination form. Preferred names, pen names, or any kind of name you’d like to use are not only welcomed, but celebrated!
Wait, what’s this about a community feature?
Notice how we only have 22 covers done by professional designers this year? Well, who’s going to fill out the other 8 days?
That’s when the community comes in!
We’ve noticed a lot of you are talented designers in your own right and we wanted a chance to showcase those designs. This cover can be one you’ve created in your own free time or a cover someone created for you in the Artisan Forums.
Sweet! How do I submit a nomination for the community feature?
All you have to do is fill out this form and submit an image of the cover design!
Here’s something super important to keep in mind:
Please make sure both the artist and writer are aware their cover art/novel is being submitted! We know that in the NaNo forums, getting cover art is usually a gift from another Wrimo. As a result, please make sure you have permission from the artist or writer before submitting! Maybe send them a private message to make sure. (Of course, this doesn’t apply to you if you designed your own cover.)
Can I submit to both forms?
Sure! But you won’t be picked for both.
Can I use AI Images in my cover design?
In general, the goal of participating in NaNoWriMo is to motivate yourself to write and give yourself space to develop your creativity. We want to carry that idea onto any visual art presented here as well! It’s less about a sophisticated end project and more of the fun journey you took, isn’t it?
Furthermore, AI image generators can run into some very specific legal and ethical issues. Here’s a few articles if you want to learn more about this topic!
The great AI art debate just got even messier: New study reveals copyrighted images can be reproduced.
Artists talk about how AI blurs creative and ethical boundaries
Given these concerns, we’re asking both professional and community designers not to use AI generated artwork for their submissions.
While you’re out there in the writing world, we’ll be working hard and reading through everyone’s submissions! If your cover is chosen, expect an email from us!
The submission forms will be open until November 15.
If you have any questions, feel free to post in the forums or send me a message there!
Good luck!
— Josie

(bleeding slightly from the eyes but with a sincerely cheerful smile on my face) HELLO fellow NaNoWriMo people! I was going to spend October writing and planning so I could hit the ground running November 1 and finally finish the first draft of the project I started last year...
...but instead I have spent 100% of my free hours the past few weeks on: crafting a spreadsheet.
a beautiful, beautiful spreadsheet for NaNoWriMo participants. ("it's for NaNo," I told myself over and over as the hours crept by; "IT COUNTS AS PREPARING. IT'S FOR NANO.")
the spreadsheet is simple, yet elegant. intuitive, yet complex. informative, yet not too heavy on the data. a soothing periwinkle shade greets you upon opening it, followed by an energizing indigo.
the spreadsheet says: "shh. come here. you will reach your NaNoWriMo goal and you will do so beautifully. no don't look at the hidden row; it contains Math. look at your word document. and then come back here and update me and see how my charts spring to life for you, my brave writer."
and then it kisses you on the forehead and/or mouth.
all for the low low price of $4.99!!! and PLEASE can 3 to 5 people kindly purchase it so I can justify to myself how I have written (checks my own copy of this spreadsheet) less than 2,000 words this month when I was supposed to have written (checks spreadsheet again) at leaset 3,000 by now. IT'S FOR NANO.
Tumblr media
^this is her btw. if you even care. my lover. my darling. my spreadsheet. i had to use exclamation points due to the Etsy of it all but please know that this spreadsheet was crafted by a true tumblrina who has been in the posting mines since 2010. thank you. goodnight.

Gearing Up for NaNoWriMo with Novlr
Hi everyone 👋 I’m Pamela, Writer Development and Community Lead at Novlr!
October is coming to an end, and so is the time to prepare for NaNoWriMo (a time we affectionately call Preptober).
Tumblr media
I hit my head, what is NaNoWriMo?
National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is an annual event where writers from all over the world work toward the same goal - writing 50,000 words - while offering and receiving support from other writers.
Throughout the year, NaNoWriMo also provides resources and support for writers, as well as events like Camp NaNoWrimo.
Tumblr media
Okay, and who are you?
We’re Novlr, and we’ve got a long history with NaNoWriMo. Our co-founders, Kim and Thomas, and myself are all NaNoWriMo vets, and Novlr has sponsored NaNoWriMo since 2019 because we share their aims of supporting writers and uplifting the writing community.
Novlr is a writing workspace designed to get you from the spark of an idea to a completed first draft without any distractions.  We’re completely free to use for up to five projects, and we are the first creative writing platform to be writer-owned.*
We put writers at the centre of everything we do, and we work with our community to build the tools that writers need. We care about allowing every writer to focus on what’s most important — your words. And we are all about empowering  writers to achieve their writing goals, no matter what they look like.
Tumblr media
Why use Novlr this NaNoWriMo?
With Novlr, you can fully integrate your project with NaNoWriMo without having to manually keep track of your word counts.
We keep track of all your words automatically, from words written, deleted, to total word count. Our integration sends that data directly to NaNoWriMo, keeping your project updated on the NaNoWriMo site as you write.
We’ve also put goals front and centre in your writing workspace, which will keep you on track to reach your NaNoWriMo goals, as well as let you keep up your writing practice even after NaNoWriMo has finished.
Tumblr media
Lastly, we’ve got advanced writing analytics that will help you learn all about your writing habits, like when you’re most productive, and help you get the most out of your writing time.
In addition to the platform itself, I’m also going to be writing with you all this year!
Novlr will be hosting a NaNoWriMo kickoff event on November 1st at at 23:00 - 01:00 GMT / 18:00 - 20:00 CT.
Throughout the month, I’ll also be running regular writing sprints in our Discord and sharing lots of posts with inspiration, encouragement, and resources, as well as chat through our projects.
Join me and my writing buddy, Molly, for lots of creativity 😍
Tumblr media
No matter where you write your words, NaNoWriMo is the perfect time to build a writing community. I’ve made lifelong friends through my participation, and have got so many words written. Whether you use Novlr or not, participation is the key. And our community, and the NaNo community at large, are here to support you as you reach for the lofty goal of 50,000 words in 30 days.
I can’t wait to read all the amazing things you write!
Tumblr media
*P.S. While our Standard plan is completely free, we do offer some extras for those who want the extra push. As sponsors of NaNoWriMo, we’re offering all participants this year 40% off Novlr Pro for 12 months, and winners, 60%! Just visit the offers page in your NaNoWriMo dashboard.
Novlr Pro gets you unlimited projects, unlimited version history to restore older versions of your work, a ProWritingAid integrated proofreader for when you’re ready to edit, as well as access to our advanced analytics. Create your free account at Novlr.org.

NaNoWriMo Midway Progress
So I've accidentally entered a drought era due to the Sisyphean task of keeping up with NaNoWriMo. I wanted to thank everyone here for the support they've shown me (but I got bowled over by November)! This is my first time participating in the challenge and the thought of people who want to read my work motivated me considerably. Since we're over halfway through, I thought it would be good to write down some insights.
At this point, I've been writing, but I can't even say my attempts have been wholly successful; I am still not caught up with the daily word count (which I have been failing from Day 1). The story is... progressing, at the very least; I think we're a quarter of the way in. If the story pans out fully, it will probably be 80-100k-ish.
I've learned quite a bit about my writing over the past few days. I really don't fit the style that NaNo requires of writers, which is "quantity-over-quality-becomes-quality, so just knuckle down and write and edit later". My approach is more like "find the precise words for each sentence and fine tune it even more when editing", which takes excrutiatingly long. Having tried out NaNo-style writing, I already know I need extensive edits for the first few scenes (mostly because Ney made so big of a mess). Style constraints also aren't helping—I need to practice writing in past tense a lot more.
Speaking of writing on your feet, I have learned that I absolutely cannot pantse things. If there is no plan, it takes infinitely longer for me to finish a scene, which affects the pace at which I achieve the word count. Historical stories that mess with timelines absolutely need more than... the week of planning that I did, lmao. One way I kind of got around this was literally word-vomiting chapter outlines in advance to rack up my word count in the first week. I also tried to rewrite scenes and include them into the word count, but found out that slowed my momentum.
If I write over 2k a day starting from now, I should still get to the 50k word count by the end of the month. I worry that I won't be spending enough time immersing myself in different scenes because the story timeline will be moving much more quickly the further I get into it. Maybe I can solve this by following the main thread of the plot (the Ney and Soult Show) and leaving bits that involve other characters I haven't researched later.
Feel free to drop me a line or ask questions about the project if you want to. Until next time!

...guess who's gonna try doing april camp nanowrimo? (no, this isn't an april fool's post, i'm actually gonna be doing it)
nano in november was pretty much a bust because it's the worst time for students, especially college students like myself. it's the end of midterms and the beginning of finals. and as an english creative writing major i'm writing a ton for those midterms and finals, so i'm less motivated to work on my draft. april is a kinda similar time.
but for this month i have something i didn't have before; an almost-completed outline! i'm continuing to work on project garden, which is the novel i started during 2023 july camp nano. i'd say i'm almost half-way through the first draft. what really started holding me back was reaching the middle portion of the novel and not knowing what to write. so after stepping away from the project and thinking a lot, i've pretty much got the entire plot written down! i wasn't able to completely finish it, i'm still trying to work out the ending and the big climax. but i have enough to begin writing once morning hits (and after i've written my poetry midterm that's due on tuesday...).
like last july camp nano, i'm making my goal 40k words, but i'm kinda hoping that i go over that. mainly i just want to finish this first draft, even if it has to carry over into may. i have NEVER finished the first draft of a novel, so it would be a big step for me.
if anyone else is participating in april camp nano, lemme know! my nano user is meguca_ so feel free to send a friend request! :D

nano 2023 (teeny tiny version) update:
right after @ettawritesnstudies closed out her write-in a few days ago - which was super fun btw i do recommend - i finished my goal of 5k for the month of november! more thoughts below the cut and snippets coming soon
part of the month, i felt kind of bad about it, since i knew i had been racking up 2k a day in the past. however, i also acknowledged that i have SIGNIFICANTLY less time than i used to, so 5k is just fine of an achievement for this month.
the fact that i wrote at all and had a wip that spoke to me at all is a good enough initiation back into the writing scene for me. i'm trying to clear up my schedule a bit as we head into the new year, and maybe i'll be able to have more to share as far as writing.
happy end of nano everyone! if you participated, i'm glad to see you now on the other side. feel free to tag me if you want to share something you did this month, nano or no!

Plans | October, November
Hey, I got sick which means I have some time, so I decided to make a little list of my writing plans for the upcoming months. It's very much needed. Mostly to me, but I'll share it here anyway to keep myself motivated to check it out sometimes lol. I also just want to share some things because I neglected tumblr for a while (still getting used to the new workplace, trying to build a scedule and some personal issues).
Anyway.
In October
Through these two months, I will focus on a short story/novelette in the world of IQRUS, since I've found a competition I want to submit a piece to and it's due date is December 21th. It's gonna be a detective story of the time, when hurtful objects and especially weapons got freshly banned from society. Thaddeus' dad will be the main character, a detective (shocking, I know) and I also want to put Dane and Adran's parents into it too. Even if just some side characters who Thaddeus' dad says hi to once. I'm so excited to start this honestly. But to be more specific, my plans are:
Oct 1. – Oct 15. Planning and fleshing the idea out.
Oct 16. – Oct 31. Plotting and Outlining.
In November
This year I want to participate in NaNo again, with this piece, because the last time I did it, it was more than a helpful thing. So, I might will leave updates here of my progress if you guys wouldn't mind it. I love sharing stuff, it keeps me inspired for some reason, so if you guys will do NaNo or just want to share your (any) progress with me, please always do! I love seeing how you lovely souls are going with everything!
That said, I will take breaks and work on other things as I know myself, so the prompts you dears sent me will help me lot, thank you! ❤️ Plus, if you want to know anything about this story, feel free to ask about it, in a random ask, in DMs or in Blorbo, WBW etc. Every kind of interest is welcome!
Also, if my doctor will tell me I need to take the whole week off (i doubt it and i hope not, but who knows), then I might will catch up with asks and maybe finish my unfinished snippets I started working on. There's three in the making, two from Metalsea and one from IQRUS.
That's it for now from my side. How about yours, loves? Any plans for the rest of the year? Would love to know, so feel free to share! ❤️

You got me hyped! Your Nanowrimo excitement has possessed me like a demon.
(Jk am genuinely kinda excited)
Does NanoWrimo accept fanfiction or would I have to write an original story?
What is the main rules?
Anything you would want to share with me about Nano?
I'm just curious ^^
Yaay! Glad I managed to hype someone up! xD
You could absolutely do fanfiction for NaNo if you want, or original work if you rather do that.. It's generally pretty free.
The main rule is basically to write 50k words during the month of november. But I know some people set lower goals for themselves and some set higher. Some people (like me) start a new project and other aim for 50k in their current project.
But no one is going to punish you for choosing a different goal. I see it as a way to motivate writers to focus on writing.
I like challenges and like to have deadlines close by. I also suck at actually finish things so this is a good excuse to do just that. c:
If you decide to participate, feel free to add me over there. Koumori Scarlet
Hope this explanation helped. And sorry for taking time to answer.

Hey fellow mutual!
First off I hope you're doing well! I often see your posts and they make me very happy and often give me good uplifts, so thank you very much for the little you do, even if it's not a big thing and we've never officially spoken (though I am a HUGE fan of OSAS! I gotta do more fanart of it tbh lol).
Speaking of OSAS, this ask is in no way pushing you to "work now work now," I was just wondering when or if you had plans to bring OSAS back! It's a genuinely fun story that follows Colosseum pretty closely with some fun twists, and I just really enjoy your take on it. It's highkey my headcanon.
Again, please don't take this as a "You Nust Write cause I'm asking you to," I'm not, I very much understand you have to do your own life first and foremost. And obviously writing is a long process! I was just wondering when we might see an installment, and let you know that I do genuinely enjoy your artwork. It makes me happy, and gosh I hope it makes you just as happy.
Again, thanks for all of the fun content and for popping into my life every now and then with your content. The new kittens are super cute and I love that they're basically Neo and Novo lol.
Okay FIRST OF ALL, I need you to know that this is live footage of me after reading this ask:
Tumblr media
But seriously, your ask has made my whole week. Maybe my whole month. Bless you, I love and adore you. 😭
To answer your question, I ABSOLUTELY have every intention of continuing OSAS. I know it’s been quite a while since my last chapter—there are many reasons for the delay, the main ones being a severe loss of confidence and hardcore general burnout that took me quite a while to recover from.
I am still building my writing confidence back up, and I’m still learning to pace myself with all my projects so that I don’t burn out like I did last fall—I’m not perfect at either one, but I’m in a much better place than I was a year ago! Slow and steady progress.
The next chapter of OSAS is fully outlined and more than halfway done! And the chapter after that is fully outlined. My goal is to outline at least the next four chapters by November, so that when NaNo hits I can just GO TOTALLY NUTS WITH WRITING. >:)
With that said, while I hope to at least finish and publish the next chapter by November, that’s probably the only update you’ll see from me until then, since right now I am pouring a ton of energy into Inktober and pacing myself there properly so I won’t be too burned out to participate in NaNo. (Which happened last year, lolwhoops. 🙃)
My ultimate goal is to get back into a regular writing routine like I used to have, and I’m at least hoping that NaNo will be just the kick I need. But regardless of what happens, you can be assured that I will never, NEVER give up on OSAS. This project is dearer to me than any project I have ever done before. (And that is SAYING something because I am a person who often juggles about 75 projects at once, ahahaha.) Completing OSAS is one of the most important personal goals I have set for myself, and even if it takes me years, I am SET on achieving it. 💛
Thank you so so much for the ask—if anything, this has given me a GIANT BOOST of motivation, which I can always use more of! (Also, confession time, I totally go back and look at your fanart sometimes for a pick-me-up. 😭 I TREASURE IT MORE THAN YOU’LL EVER KNOW.)
Thanks again, and I hope you’re also doing well! Feel free to send me asks any time. 🥰

30 Covers, 30 Days: An Introduction
Tumblr media
When the leaves are falling and prep time has us scrambling for November, it’s a clear sign of what’s to come next. What is it, you may ask? It’s time for 30 Covers, 30 Days, which is arguably, one of the coolest parts of the year!
What is 30 Covers, 30 Days?
Thirty lucky Wrimos will be selected to receive a unique cover for their 2022 NaNoWriMo Novel! These covers are designed in 96 hours by a group of talented and diverse professional graphic designers, recruited by our amazing 30C30D coordinator, Debbie Millman. She’s a writer, educator, artist, brand consultant and host of the radio show Design Matters.  Plus, she’s President of Sterling Brands for the last twenty years and President Emeritus of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. Your novel is in super capable hands!
Then, when November hits, you’ll get to see a new cover daily on this blog, as well as the NaNo forums and Instagram! Everyone will get to see your super cool cover! Past covers can be seen here.
I’m so excited now! How do I get a cover?
We’re excited too! All you have to do is fill out this form and nominate your own novel! Here’s some things to keep in mind:
Read over your form carefully before you submit it. You cannot edit your information after submitting it. There are ways to withdraw though! You can see details on that here.
You do not have to share your real name on the nomination form. Preferred names, pen names, or any kind of name you'd like to use is not only welcomed, but celebrated!
If you have any questions, feel free to post in the forums or send me a NaNoMail.
In the meantime, why don’t you check out the NaNo Artisans forums? You can share covers you create or see if any other participants want to make your’s!
While you’re out there in the writing world, we’ll be working hard and reading through everyone’s submissions! You’ll hear from us again soon. The submission form will be open until November 15.
Good luck!

The Monday Menu
Well.... for those interested, I did not find those missing 1000 words.  I’m gutted, but only in the sense that I want to know what I had written.   Welcome to the last Monday... in Summer School and in Camp Nano.  Can’t believe it’s almost over.  I love participating in Camp Nano, and NaNoWriMo in November.  Give me the excuse for my sense of self criticism - the ability to flip it the bird and tell it, “Naff off... it’s April/July,November - I’m allowed to write!”
So now you all know I feel guilty when I indulge myself an allow myself to write. I know I shouldn’t.  It’s a HUGE part of my self-care routine, but I still do.
So, since no one said anything about it... what do you guys think of the Behind the Scenes idea?
Here’s the plan for this week (and an explanation of each thing for those that are new to my Tumblr), though I might be making some changes.
Monday - The Monday Menu - what it says on the box. A plan for the week.
Tuesday - TMI Tuesday. - Ask me… go on, anything.  Ask my characters -they’ll answer. Nothing is off limits, but be sure you want the answer before you ask the question.
Wednesday - WIP Wednesday - Current state of my works in progress. So many - and still clmbing!
Thursday - Three Things Thursday - any fic of mine is fair game. Doesn’t have to be Rumbelle, I have Rushbelle, a bunch of crossovers, some shows people might no know, some ST: DSC, some SGA and some Tolkien too… ask three things, I dare ya...! Please… This is also the day I’ll do the ‘Behind the Scenes’ post, which might just end up as part of the TTT post.
Friday - Final Line Friday. - Assuming I manage to write anything, I will post a word cloud, and the last line that I have written right before I post this.
Saturday - Saturday Secret - another one of those where you can ask about any fic, and I’ll tell (or show) you a secret. Feel free to follow up with conversation or guesses.  I will tell you if you get something right. Again, no one took me up on the offer… so we might also have to think of another ‘SA’ post.
Where /is/ everyone.  As @deliriumsdelight7 said in the tags for the reblog of a post I made last week: ‘Once more for the people in the back: WE CANNOT CREATE IN A VACUUM!’
Sunday - Seven Sentence Sunday. - yeah, I have to write something to be able to post this.
Tumblr media
Writing this week - The hope is that I have time to continue working on Laer o Faen, chapter 26 (I need to finish it!), as well as Secret of the Seas, and What the Actual Fuck!
As always my inbox is open for thoughts, questions, asks… I don’t restrict people to any particular day of the week, and I - like most fic authors - love to discuss things to do with fics and fandom.
I just want to add a shout out to those readers who have left me Kudos these last several days.  It has not gone un-noticed.  love you guys for those votes of confidence..
Talk to me, peeps! My inbox is lonely,

#218: The Best Writing App for NaNoWriMo
Tumblr media
NaNoWriMo starts in just a week. One month, 50,000 words and a lot of caffeine. Several bestselling novels started as NaNo projects by unknown writers (well, not any more). This includes titles like Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and Cinder, Scarlet and Cress by Marissa Meyer.
About 350,000 writers sign up every November to write a novel in 30 days. What fascinates me is that only about 40,000 writers complete the challenge. Why is that? What do those who make it have that others don’t? And how can we make that number higher? A lot higher.
Of course, writing is hard, but is it really something that only a fraction of people can do? I don’t buy that.
I believe that the writers who finish simply have the tools, habits and support they need to overcome resistance and get words on the page.
That’s why I built Writing Analytics — an editor that gives you the tools to get your words done and create a sustainable writing routine. If you’re doing NaNoWriMo this year, I believe it’s the best app to get you over the finish line.
Try Writing Analytics for FREE During NaNoWriMo
The best part is that Writing Analytics will be free to try from today through the whole of November. Use the link below to create an account that will be free to use until 4 December 2021:
Create Your Free Writing Analytics Account for NaNoWriMo
No hidden fees or gimmicks — you can always access your drafts and data even after your account has expired. You can also easily export all your drafts whenever you want.
While I can't afford to be an official NaNoWriMo sponsor yet (🤞 for next year!), I'd like to support writers in the small way I can. That brings me to my other point.
NaNoWriMo Winners Get 50% OFF Writing Analytics
Need some extra motivation to complete NaNoWriMo this year? If you write your novel in Writing Analytics and win NaNoWriMo, you'll get 50% off your subscription for a year!
Send your NaNoWriMo 2021 Winner's Certificate to [email protected], and I'll sort you out!
How Writing Analytics Works?
So why is Writing Analytics the best editor for NaNoWriMo? It combines several productivity tools that successful writers use into a simple writing app that you can use on your laptop or phone.
Tumblr media
While you write, the editor tracks a number of metrics behind the scenes. This includes how many words you write and delete, how long each writing session takes, how focused you are and how much time you spend typing.

Seven Days to Go!
NaNoWriMo is only a week away. I wish you the very best of luck if you're planning to participate this year!
It will be intense 30 days. Writing 1,666 words per day for a month is no joke. If you're a slow writer like me, it may even seem ridiculous, but I'd encourage you to think about it as an experiment — a way to try something new.
A novel in a month — the insanity of that goal may well be what breaks through the assumptions that you have about what you're capable of as a writer and becomes the defining moment of your career.
Remember, you don't have to publish your NaNo novel. You only have to finish it. At the very least, NaNoWriMo is a fantastic opportunity to write some garbage. Real garbage — stuff that you'll be too embarrassed to even read back.
That's how you get to writing the good stuff.

wip hopping/shiny idea syndrome (aka me 😭 - celeste) - an inability to focus on your current wip because a (shiny) new idea strikes, so you “hop” to your next wip
manuscript - a draft of an unpublished work of writing.
synopsis - a brief summary of your story’s main plot, subplots, characters and major themes,
subplot - secondary plot that acts as a support for the main plot. often runs parallel to the main plot and can add important information to the storyline.
archetype - a type of character. they are the role(s) a character plays (e.g. the hero, the wise old mentor/sage, etc.) sometimes, they also give a vague personality for the character (e.g. the hero is usually courageous, the sage is usually wise)
beta reader - test reader for an unpublished work of writing, they give feedback from the view of an average reader.
critique partner - another writer with whom you regularly share your work with for mutual critiquing. (the two of us who run this account are critique partners :))))
infodumping - infodumping is where an author “dumps” a lot of exposition (whether it be about the world, the magic system, etc.) all at once, in a way that is not incorporated well into the story. for example, in mistborn by brandon sanderson, kelsier explains the rules of allomancy all at once to vin, so sanderson can also get the information across to the reader
trad pub - publishing through an established publishing house, where they handle most things, including: cover design, sales, marketing, editing, etc.
indie/self publishing - where an author publishes without a publishing house by themselves. they usually assemble a team of professionals, including cover design and editing.
nanowrimo/nano - national novel writing month! takes place in november, where participants try to draft a novel (or just complete 50000 words of it).
writing sprint - a designated time where you write as many words as possible, without editing

we hope these helped! let us know if there's any other big terms that we've missed - audrey
