Thoughts on Carmen
I’m a fan of @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin and @therealvinelle works and blogs of course. You may want to read some of their metas if you’re not familiar with them or else some of what I say is going to sound insane. I especially love their delightfully horrendous Eleazar from their fics. x x x
He’s so much fun to read and to write, and between those two excellent writers and several fans inspired by them, Eleazar has been quite thoroughly dragged through the mud multiple times over. (Not that I have any intention of stopping, provided I have enough inspiration/fanfic prompts.)
Carmen, however, isn’t discussed nearly as much, but this woman fascinates me.
Carmen is barely in canon and has almost no speaking lines in fanfics (because of a bingo card maybe? Idk.) The only thing that sticks out in my mind from rereading every chapter of breaking dawn featuring the denali fifty times (for reasons that may or may not become clearer mid July) is that she was the first to accept Renesmee and be charmed by her, and seems like a sweet enough person the couple of times that she says anything at all.
I just have to wonder what goes on in the brain of someone who is happily married to Eleazar of all people.
She’s obviously not a moral person, considering that she enables the shenanigans that the Denali sisters/Eleazar get up to, and probably participates in it as well. But I do think she is very pleasant and “nice” in terms of the way she talks and interacts with people. Similar ish to how Umbridge from Harry Potter is evil, but acts like a very sugary sweet kind of person.
And tbf I agree with muffin/vinelle that the Denali are completely unaware of the fact that they are serial rapists and that the men they sleep with are probably terrified of saying no to them. Carmen has good intentions, and thinks that she and Eleazar are paragons of morality, and even if she and Eleazar woohoo people to death in hot tubs, at least they don’t eat them.
I also think that she’s probably an insanely easygoing person, who is nigh impossible to annoy or offend. She would also have to be fairly quiet, and a good listener, since Eleazar loves the sound of his own voice.
I think that if her circumstances were different and she didn’t meet Eleazar, she could have been a sweet, easygoing, and supportive partner to anyone. Either another horrible obnoxious person where she would just be similarly chill and accepting, no matter what nonsense they get up to. Or she could end up with a sane, normal person who doesn’t have weird kinks of woohooing with their food.
Honestly, the human equivalent of  what Edward and the denali are into is like if a person was sexually attracted to a hot apple crumble, fresh out of the oven. Compared to sleeping with another person, it’s way too warm, way too squishy, and smells like food. Plus you would destroy a perfectly good apple crumble, which is just a shame.
Anyway, that’s all. tdlr Carmen is a very supporting and easygoing person, and very interesting to me considering she is happily married to the worst person in the universe.

can’t stop thinking abt the only time we see carmy wear a The Beef tshirt is when he cooks dinner for claire. you know, the piece of clothing he refused for all of season 1 (when their restaurant was Actually called that) and asked everyone else to switch OUT of (to white shirts and blue aprons).
Tumblr media
something something claire fundamentally does not allow carmy to grow as a person + represents carmy’s backsliding into his past something

what's your opinion on whether or not canon zutara could have made sense to happen by the finale?? i can't decide if i would have preferred them getting together or just hints at it and then it's revealed in tlok that they got married (and ig the comics would include the story of them getting together then)
my stance has always been that the show should have ended with no canonical romantic relationships, or a hint of future zutara at best. we didn't need anything more than a quick, intimate scene where zuko and katara discuss their futures and promise to keep in touch, with maybe a lingering glance or two to foreshadow romantic feelings. no kiss or grand declarations necessary.
that being said, if a romantic relationship had to happen, zutara was both built up more and made more sense narratively than kat.aang and mai.ko. i wouldn't have liked a zutara kiss in the finale for many of the same reasons i didn't like the kat.aang one, but it would've at least been thematically fitting and consistent with the characterizations of everyone involved - unlike zuko ending up with someone who never underwent any of the growth he did, and katara entering a lifelong romantic relationship without even so much as a word to give us insight into her sudden change of heart.
the only way to really do justice to zutara would've been with book 4, allowing plenty of time for a proper slowburn friends-to-lovers arc, but the reason so many people ship them today is because their relationship at the end of the show is the perfect jumping-off point for a romance. canon didn't actually have to give us anything more - the seeds were all planted already, and the imagination of the fandom would've done the rest.

It is June 27th. I wake up, turn on my phone and don't google if Sydcarmy is canon (I don't want to have my heart broken so early in the morning). Then, by lunch time, I decide enough is enough so I end up googling, is Sydcarmy canon? and when the answer comes out negative I breathe deeply, looking at the sky and telling myself:
"IM TIRED OF THIS FUCKING SHOW BAITING ME, I AM DROPPING THIS SHIT, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!!!!"
then, later that night, i end up marathoning the entire season 3 bc syd and carmy have good fucking scenes AS ALWAYS that prove they should be together though, people will insist they are just ~plAtoNIc~, they should remain frIenDS~
i still tell myself i wont watch this show ever again. then season 4 comes out and it happens all over again

Claire, Richie and Fak keep treating Carmy like a child
In the long list of 🤨momments I had while watching Claire, are those when she literally said to Carmy, in a cute flirty voice, a version of “why don't you say this” and Carmy goes an says it. It happened twice as I recall. When she said “say one more time (that you wanted to have my number) and the other when they were helping that drunk girl at the party (that saint Claire ended up abandon either way) and she asked Carmy to repeat something. It gave “mother” “teacher” vibes. It is the thing that you do when you have to mold a child. She was molding him to her liking.
Same with Richie and Fak, breaking boundaries and insisting on them dating. Carmy definitely associates being with Claire with pleasing his family (Mickey included) when one of Carmy’s core wounds is how much they rejected him and his profession after Mickey banished him.
Carmy has feeling for Claire, I don't deny that. She is pleased with Carmy to the point of not demanding anything from him when he grow up in a house surrounded by people who made him think he was not good enough. People who treat our core wounds can be very seductive, to the point we may ignore others parts of our emotional needs. That is not either good or bad, but is good to be aware of it. How much you want this person because they made you feel you are not as bad as you think you are? How does that affect the dynamic?
The show is making a point to tell us how much Carmy may have never pursue a relationship with this her (mind you, even Claire said they were never close growing up) if his family had not pushed him in that direction.
Is not about “oh he is shy so he needs help” or that he is mentally ill. Loving someone doesn't mean taking away their agency. If anything If you love “molding” somebody, you just love the person they are after you molded them.
Tumblr media
I think that comes back to his panicky attack. He seems unable to detach Claire from all the horrible memories and wounds related to his family. He may even feel that to be with with her, but he must be “molded” to all those expectations, theirs and hers. Do with that what you will.

Say the words
Doing a rewatch. Did we already discuss how Claire forcing Carmy to say "I want you to have my number" and "okay, say that one more time" equivelant to
Donna: Just say the words, Carm
Mikey: Just say the fucking words
Carmy: I love you.
Uncomfortable.

I've been in the brainrot Sydcarmy and The Bear for a while now and I noticed something extremely interesting in all the thing about Syd+Carmy+Claire.
about how in the media it's very common for the protagonist to have a main love interest, a woman who has been there since day 1 and who is already a known to the public, who is generally removed from his focus after he finds a temporary girlfriend, who is almost always black, who only serves to develop the plot, the protagonist and make him realize his feelings for his love interest and has almost no deepening.
Except that Syd, an ambitious, smart, black woman, is our reference and focus. The one that has been there since day 1 is her.
And if Syd is already our reference, the one that Carmy clearly has interest, knowloge and connection with first, that leaves Claire with the other role.
about how everyone knows Claire so well…but we don't. We don't see the connection, scenes, impact (and I dare say neither does Carmy)
something, something, about how Claire doesn't have depth because she wasn't made for it, because she fulfills a role as a non-character functionality, something, something, about how Claire is the other woman, something, something , that the plot makes it clear that Sydney is the one whose aspirations, fears, family, and who should have our focus, as well as Carmy's. something, something like the trope is there, just not in the "usual way".

Thanks: @currymanganese for suggesting that I make a post about this.
Claire had so much confidence towards the fact that she stole gum from Walgreens and Carmy’s reaction says it all about how bothered he was by it.
Not only because he doesn’t like unethical practices, but also because HE IS A BUSINESS OWNER. He was labouring through working at the beef and then designing the bear. Imagine how degrading it would be for him if someone stole from his business, he knows how it feels.
And I know, Claire did that stuff when she was a teenager. But the way she had no empathy and treated it like a numerous anecdote was kind of disrespectful.

Carmy has been a victim of gaslight his whole life
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gifs by @robertacolndrez
So, the definition of gaslight, according to this site, is:
"Psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator."
According to Forbes Health, this are some of the things you experience when you are being constantly gaslighted.
Anxiety
Depression
Disorientation
Lowered self-esteem
Post-traumatic stress disorder
A hyperbolized fear of danger, known as hypervigilance
I want to zoom off that last one; remember when Carmy told in the group sharing session that he had to remember himself that the world was not falling? That he had to remember himself to breathe?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we take "Fishes" as a basis to understand the family dynamics as they grow up (and I think we should), then we can get a pretty good idea of how much Carmy's feelings and thoughts were discredited growing up.
When he speaks up about how much shit they are giving him about his profession, Donna and Mickey attack him in the group to make them say "I love you," basically telling him that it doesn't matter that they make him feel like shit; Carmy is supposed to love them no matter what. I assume this is the answer he got every time he spoke up about boundaries being crossed, or maybe he was just so intimidated by his much larger and loud older brother or his aggressive mother. We can get traces of this trauma every time he gets insulted to his face in the show; it was so bad that it was Pete of all people who had to defend him (it is very telling that is Pete because to everyone else, insulting Carmy and him having to just take it seem to be a normal occurrence, Donna made it that way). It was the only way to keep the peace and the family functioning. Clining to the love he could take in the "good moments."
Here are some ways the most important people of his life had gaslight Carmy:
Donna seems to have a preference for Mickey over Carmy, a preference he is aware of but never understands why. Donna will throw "forks" of random aggression at Carmen, and he can never fight back. As a child, he was forced to think there was something wrong with him because that is the way a kid's mind works.
Mickey lied to him about why he cast him out and hid his addiction. Ignored Carmy's calls and then acted like Carmy (who was alone in a different city and in a very mentally aggressive industry) was making a big deal about it. Carmy wanted support, and Mickey (probably the only real parent figure he ever had) was making him feel shit about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gifs by @thoughtfulchaos773
When he confronted it about it, Carmy couldn't even look his brother in the face; that is how much deep down Carmy was intimidated by him. Mickey also never gave him a final answer about their dream restaurant. With time, the breach between the brothers got so big that the only call he ever received about Mickey was to inform him of his death.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
gifs by @espumado
Richie, Mickey, and others started to tell him about who he should date. It seems like they still intend to make decisions for him on that front. (Fuck Fak and Richie). They knew Carmys had a crush on Claire at some point and were weaponizing his emotions; Mickey probably did it to compensate for how much of a shy brother he had been. It is possible they ver wanted Claire for themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, you have Claire, that absolute promisse of uncomplicated love and affection. She doesn't necessarily gaslight Carmy, but she definitely has infantilized him in a couple of instances. Aka, this post.
That kind of game from Claire, suggesting to somebody else what they should think or say, is not acceptable either. When a person does that, they are aware they are doing it; it doesn't matter if they think it is harmless or not. Toxic behavior and ignoring boundaries don't stop being toxic because you have love/affection for the other person.
The fact that a victim of gaslight like Carmy is accepting this treatment, a person who had to go with what people wanted from him his whole life, feeling he had to adapt to receive love, because otherwise there was something wrong with him (Donna), makes it all worse. Carmy has associated (subconsciously) accepting insulting scenarios as part of a relationship with a loved one. With Claire, he accepts being infantilized and guided into saying the things she wants him to say. Yikes all around. I am not saying Claire is or would abuse Carmy, but this dynamic's undertone is not pretty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hate to end this on a shipper note, but for me, this all goes back to Sydney. Since the beginning, Syd is the only person who has established clear intentions with him and followed through with them. She does it when she says she wants something or will do something. Why does this "best friend" woman seem to have a less toxic approach to their relationship than his own girlfriend? That shit cannot be unintentional. Camy and Syd established in s2 that they could argue while recognizing their responsibility for the argument. No antagonizing, no lies, no manipulation.
