Are y'all in need of a part 2?

Jack's career was skyrocketing. You shouldn't be surprised: an important role in Avatar The Way of Water and Ghostface in the popular Scream franchises with a movie featuring Pedro Pascal on the way. Your boyfriend was going places and you couldn't be prouder, but his career skyrocketing also meant he was highly recommended among casting directors. You should be proud of him. You didn't want to be in the way of his success, but what about your boundaries?

He got fancasted in a romcom on social media, to which he grew interested in. He was the top choice, it was everywhere. The existence of the handsome actor named Jack Champion spread like wildfire. You didn't know all the details, but he got casted as the handsome love interest. Just the way everyone wanted it to be. He was trending thanks to this role and he couldn't wait where it would bring him. You were happy for him, but another side of you couldn't help but feel uncomfortable a the thought. You knew it was work, of course you did. It was part of his work and besides, he loved you, right? But you still felt uncomfortable at the thought of him holding another, kissing another, being another's. You never dared to voice these feelings out, though. And you wished you did.

News got out of the casting of the movie and media went into an uproar, everyone but you. The publicity of the casting meant that filming would start. He asked you to be there for him and you reluctantly agreed. You could follow college online, so you didn't have an excuse not to go with him. Was it selfish of you to think like this? You really wanted to be the supportive girlfriend one would see on television, and you felt bad that you currently weren't that person for him.

"Are you proud of him?" You would answer that question truthfully: with a nod, because you were proud of him and what he had achieved.

Being behind the scenes was anything but exciting. Sitting at a table somewhere behind the crew as you typed away on your laptop. Your gaze would occasionally wander in front of you, craning your neck to see Jack in his glory, working his ass off. You couldn't help but smile as you watched him in his role. It was amazing to see how he could go from being Jack to a fictional character. But your smile faded as the camera was rolling and Jack gave her a look similar in your eyes. A look he gave you when he looked at you. A look that wasn't only yours anymore.

You packed your stuff and discreetly left the scene, phone in hand as your thumbs typed away on the screen.

You should have communicated properly.

Jack's phone buzzed in his mother's pocket.

Her <3: I had to leave in an urgent, ily I'll see you soon.

Your relationship was rocky, not the same as before. Jack wasn't stupid. Something was wrong. He may be busy, but he always noticed any small detail that changed when it came to you. He didn't want to push you, so he decided to not push you further. What a mistake that was.

Not communicating your feelings properly.

Not pushing himself to ask you about it.

Was that your downfall?

With this lack of communication, filming continued, with you out of touch with reality. You still stayed in the city Jack was filming at. You wanted to be there for him, but being on set? That you couldn't do. You would be wandering around the city, sitting at cafes as your gaze would focus on the assignment in front of you. You only saw one another at night, when he met you at his trailer after filming. Sharing a small kiss before heading to sleep.

Even that was taken away from you.

As you, unfortunately, walked in during a kissing scene. A kissing scene that they had to redo continuously. Wrong perspective. Touchier. More passion. You couldn't help but watched how his lips moved in sync with hers as she pulled him down by his collar, his hands on her waist. Their bodies pressed against one another. The camera tilted as he pressed her against a nearby wall, deepening the kiss.

"Cut! That was amazing!"

You had already disappeared amongst the crew, your appearance unbeknownst to Jack.

As well as your feelings.

How could you ever voice yourself?

How could he make you talk?

Since that day, you hadn't kissed him on the lips. They didn't belong to you anymore. Was there anything of him that was still yours?

He had shared his longing gazes, his I love you's, his lips, his touches.

What was still yours?

Could you still call him yours?

Every morning, every night, he had leaned in for a kiss from you. His girlfriend. He didn't feel anything for the kisses he did for work, but yours. Yours would always give him butterflies. Made him feel like he was floating. Made his heart beat faster.

But his heart did the polar opposite.

It broke.

It broke as you leaned to the side, his lips landing against your cheek instead.

What had gone wrong?

He watched your expression. A forced smile. He couldn't help it anymore. He couldn't watch the process of your relationship falling apart.

"Baby, talk to me." His voice was soft as it cracked, holding your cheeks in his hands, basically forcing you close to him. Thus forcing your gazes to lock. Your eyes faltered, tears almost welling up in your eyes. Almost. Then your gaze traveled to his lips. Lips that not only you kissed.

"Soon, Jack." Your lips pressed against the tip of his nose as you lied through your teeth. Not knowing you weren't the only one hurting.

Communicating was important, you knew that. But communicating meant explaining your feelings. It meant ruining Jack's career. You couldn't bare to do that. So during the entirety of filming and after, this pain went on.

The premiere of the movie. With flashing cameras, interviews, crowds and the first watch. Jack had picked you up with his mother. You were his plus one, of course he had chosen you as his plus on. Who else could he have chosen? Even though the two of you were arguing and you still didn't talk, he wanted to work this out with you. He had hoped this premiere could bring you closer.

If only he knew.

You stayed in the background as Jack walked past the rolling cameras, microphones pressed into his face as every interviewer wanted the first answers to their questions for the rising star. Beside him stood the his co-star, the two of them smiling as they spoke into the microphone. You envied her. Ironic, envying a girl while you were the girlfriend.

"Everyone was amazing. The crew, the director, the cast. It was an unforgettable experience that for sure made me grow as an actor."

"Yes definitely. Jack was amazing to work with and I look forward to working with him more often. There was a bond that immediately clicked, which helped with our chemistry."

It made you sick to your stomach, watching them bond. Their chemistry had grown so much over the months. While you were brooding about your relationship, the two of them had grown so close. Why couldn't you just tell him how you felt?

With your head full of painful thoughts, Jack took you by the waist as he led you towards the venue. While he was proud to show you off to everyone as the cameras were shooting pictures of you, your mind was elsewhere. If only he had already connected the dots and gotten out of there with him, maybe the night would have turned out different.

At that point, you wanted to be anywhere else but there. The lights were off as the movie played on the big screen. You wanted to look away the entire time, the way your hands fiddled in your lap looking so much more interesting than the screen in front of you. But you wanted to support him, watch him act and praise him for it, so you endured the aching in your heart as you focused on your boyfriend holding another in his arms. Jack took notice of this. If he was honest, he could care less about whatever happened on screen: his gaze was focused on you and you only. The way you reacted to anything on the screen. His eyebrows furrowed, as if it finally settled in what was wrong with you.

"I love you, why don't you understand that?!"

"it will always be you!"

His lips pressed against hers, a heated make out scene on full display. The scene you had walked into. You felt sick in your stomach, tears welling into your eyes. You couldn't make a fool out of yourself, so you got up and left. Just like that. He watched you leave and shot up from his seat himself, covering most of the screen for the people behind him. He mumbled soft apologies as he rushed after you.

He had to find you and this time, he would make you talk.

To your dismay, he had found you fast. His long legs keeping up with your shorter ones. You stood in the middle of some empty hallway with your back facing him, your face in your hands as you sobbed. All the emotions you had kept inside you were bursting out, all at once. You were definitely overreacting. He was just doing his job, but why did it hurt?

"babe?" his voice rang through your head. He couldn't see you like this. You have been rubbing your eyes, your makeup was smudged for sure. He stepped towards you, slow but steady, "please talk to me? Don't tell me you're fine. Since I got casted you have been so off.." His voice trailed off, as if the realization finally hit. You were hurting. And it was his fault. The realization made him lunge himself at you, his hands settled on your waist as he pulled you closer. You felt your heart crack.

That wasn't only yours either. You pushed him away with your elbows, thus making him stumble back. "You're not mine anymore."

What?

Not yours?

You owned his heart. You carried it with you everywhere you went, unbeknownst to you. Your name was engraved into his heart. It was beating for you, and only you. He was yours. His mind, body and soul was yours.

"I'm yours, everything that has to do with me is yours."

You snapped. All your frustrations shot out, like lava escaping an active volcano.

You turned to him, your face covered in smudges as your hot tears rolled down your face. "Do you know how it feels to see my boyfriend be someone else's?! You held her like you do with me, you looked at her like you do with me. Hell, you never kissed me like you did with HER. So no, you're not mine. Because when I look at you, I just see you with HER. I can't do it Jack, and I'm sorry."

You held your arms to your chest, as if you tried to protect yourself from further heartbreak. The sight broke him. He never meant to hurt you and he wanted to prove you. A step closer to you was all it took for you to stumble backwards, "why didn't you tell me? I would have understood. Babe, We could have fixed this early on."

"No, Jack. Holding you back was never my intention. And look at you, this romance role made you skyrocket," your voice cracked, "you're a star Jack."

"If being a star means I am hurting you, then I don't want it. You don't hold me back, you could never hold me back. Please, I will do whatever to be with you. There are enough roles for me to get that doesn't include intimacy! Like horror roles, a cool badass side character. There is so much." he was rambling and he knew that. But he couldn't help it. He had to do whatever to make you stay.

"You always wanted to be a star and reach the charts, you-"

"I LOVE YOU! It will always be you! You would always be on my first place! I can't do this without you, please." That sounded incredibly similar. A familiar scream, so echoey that they had gained peoples attention. Phones were taken out, as well as flickering lights filling the room. But he could care less, he needed to fix this.

Yet you were thinking the complete opposite. You had to leave, you couldn't handle crowds. You could hear his pleads as you tried your best to make your way out.

He watched you leave, his tears rolling down his face as his hands were in his hair.

"Jack! Mind telling us what was going on?"

"Jack! Are you officially single now?!"

"Jack smile for us please!"

"Jack here!"

"Jack this way!"

Overwhelmed.

Aching.

He got on his knees as he cried, his face in his hands as he begged everyone to leave him alone. Begged them to let him cry at your departure.

This was his dream, but at what cost?

actor hob, and pretentious asshole film director dream

[ this got so long and so weird and specific i'm so sorry ]

so hob is an everyman actor. a good actor, charismatic, funny, fan favorite, but not the type that gets cast in highbrow art films. mostly he does like romcoms, mid-budget action movies, feel-good family films, etc etc. and he's totally cool with that, he's good at what he does, and people enjoy those films, anyway. he might be getting a bit bored though, a bit stagnant. might be thinking it's time for some reinvention. and there might be a certain director whose ridiculous and nonsensical but dreamy films he's particularly enamored with...

dream makes REALLY pretentious art films. the types that get studied in graduate level film classes and have fifty different academic papers with fifty different theses trying to puzzle them out. dream is a master of themes and images and subtle construction. he is also a COMPLETE asshole and impossible to work with, an auteur in the most stereotypical way possible, he writes and directs, he micromanages all his projects, he asserts his vision and god help anyone who goes against it. nobody can handle him, nobody can STAND him, and the only reason he still gets funding for these projects is because they win awards, so many awards, and the studios want to ride on the coattails of those awards. but it's getting to the point where even his most ride-or-die producers are ready to give up.

right off the back of dream's most recent bafta, a rather naive Big Exec approaches him to direct the next installment of his Big Superhero Franchise. dream is immediately like fuck off with that bullshit but the exec pleads with him that the franchise is flagging and they really need something new to spice it up. plus the pay will be enough for dream to finance like 10 of his own ridiculous art films without having to rely on producers for money. and dream really is about to get cut off for being a complete insufferable asshole so he takes the gig. it kind of feels like prison though.

anyway, he gets to work trying to make this shitty boring film at least marginally less shitty and boring. he doesn't have a lot of leeway -- a lot of the story is locked in, half the cast is set from prior installments etc. dream immediately regrets taking this job, he'd rather die in actual prison than work on this mindnumbing piece of trash. it feels like it's taking an eternity and who could possibly stand an eternity of this???

well. enter hob, whose agent managed to snag him a 2nd-lead sort of role in this thing. it's not QUITE the reinvention he was going for but the pay and exposure are really good -- and even if they weren't, the moment hob saw that dream was attached he was immediately on board.

cue dream tearing his fucking hair out and basically being a complete menace and diva on set -- no that wasn't good, yes we have to do a 57th take, oh my god this dialogue is horrible give me that shitty script i'm writing my own thing, what do you mean the plot is linear???, wait there are how many cgi aliens????? i'm going to kill myself -- and Hob, pretty much Just Happy To Be There as always, takes one look at this beautiful dramatic emo asshole and is like oh. yes. i don't know what i'm saying yes to, but i'm saying yes. just immediately enamored with this bitch against all logic, he's like i've seen all your films i know how your mind works you brilliant nihilistic mess of a person. i'm on board. let's go.

first scene that hob's in dream is once again ranting about the atrocious script, which he did not write and is hardly allowed to change -- or, every change he makes is too weird and the studio keeps nixing it. everyone keeps sighing and being like oh my god can we please just shoot i wanna go home, meanwhile hob's like alright then. let's workshop it. and dream's just like. what. you aren't just gonna tell me to shut up? and hob's like no, youre right, this script is trash, but i know you're just going to write something really weird and psychedelic that they won't let you shoot. and dream's like you dare to speak to me that way??? and hob just puts his hands on his hips and is like listen, i actually know more about this sort of general audience family film thing than you do, mister arthouse, so are you going to work with me or not? and dream's just like what... is happening... because usually people who try to 'handle' him either just cave to his every demand like wimps, or just fight him on everything to 'prove' that they're in control, and hob is just kind of... not doing either of those? anyway dream doesn't know what to do with him.

so they workshop it. turns out hob actually DOES know how these sort of general audience all-follow-the-same-three-act-structure films work and how to improve things within those confines, and also he understands what like, normal people like, you know, casual feel good movies, not everything has to be a mindbender, jesus. so they bounce ideas off each other for like 3 hours until they finally get something that's okay enough that dream no longer wants to fling himself into the sun. meanwhile everyone on set is staring at them like 👀. then dream is like come back to my trailer we are rewriting the other 116 pages of this script right NOW. what else is hob supposed to do but follow.

then hob becomes the designated Dream Handler on set. dream starts using him as his barometer for what 'normal people' would like because he does not understand that at all. ("hob, will 'people' accept this?" "well considering youre spinning the camera around on a string i'm gonna go out on a limb and say no"). dream becomes kind of obsessed with him because his life is so like, normal, and he's okay with it?? he doesn't find existence to be an insufferable prison from which there is no escape?? and hob is like aw i know you're such a tortured artistic soul *pats him on the head*. plus, hob is actually a good actor, and he's able to put a lot of heart into even this mediocre big budget film, and kind of forces dream to confront the idea that there's more than one good type of story. that different stories serve different purposes and a straightforward happy story is okay, actually.

(and that the problem is the corporatization of the storytelling, not the story itself)

anyway the movie ends up being pretty good, dream still kind of hates it because he wasn't given full artistic license but he has to grudgingly admit that it has at least some merit. after the premiere hob is like (cheekily) so you gonna direct the sequel? and dream is like i did not write that to have a sequel. and hob's like it has a cliffhanger? and dream's like so???? and hob's like well theyre definitely gonna make a sequel. and dream's like i hate this planet. also no i'm not going to make the sequel. i'm going to fuck off to the woods and make a movie about teeth. do you want to star in it? and hob's like you're so fucking weird i'm obsessed with you i'm going to kiss you now.

I actually finished up the EAH AU designs for the teens so I'll probs be posting that later today w/ a brief explanation of the AU plot but I absolutely will tell it for you too 😤👍

EAH is Ever After High! Its a twin franchise to Monster High based of the kids of fairytale characters. It's primarily a doll line BUT it had a show that was (imo) phenomenal. Like the writers really went off with it !!! Unfortunately it got canceled some years back but I still get brainrot about it every year or so.

the whole AU came from me pointing out the parallels between the two EAH main characters, Raven and Apple, and comparing them to Scary and Normal LMAO. LIKE . Raven is a sorceress who grew up with her mother trying to guide her into evil and so she grew up not being able to enjoy soft and good things that she liked and then later she decides to rebel against the social narrative that said she had to be the villain and reclaimed her magic powers that she got from her mom for something good instead ....... and then Apple being a paragon for toxic positivity with no trustworthy adult figures in her life and constantly trying to conform to get her mom's approval.... Her with control issues trying to do what she thinks is right and good (but isnt always whats best).....

Anyways it totally spiraled and got away from us very quickly as we started filling out the rest of the plot and the cast. It went pretty off course from the original show aside from the Apple accidentally releases the original Evil Queen from her mirror prison plotline (aka Normal accidentally freeing Willy) and its just a LOT OF GOOD FUN.

Hermie also ended up playing a bigger role than the initial show and got upgraded to main character status lmao. And swiftli get to have a cute and silly romcom B plot while marloakworthy go through The Horrors.

The kiddads are all also involved !!!! The things that happen in the teens generation of the Snow White story are lowkey a consequence of what happened in the previous generation of Sparrow's Snow White story. WHICH WAS INFLUENCED BY HENRY'S. We really tied in the generational aspect this time round.

That’s what my relatives on fb seem to think anyway that MADDY FUCKING PEREZ HAS MORE SEXUAL CHARISMA IN HER FANCY ASF PINKY ACRYLIC NAIL than any of the morritos of Narcos yes Mayo and Javi, even you. I said it, don’t look at me like that you unprofessional gigolos cause much like Maddy, I will come for you and because she has the allure of like a Helen of Troy mixed with the magnetism of a JLo, it makes for an obscenely explosive combo with our boi Mon.

Secondly, the idea for this came from a convo in our Narcos fanfic writer’s discord join us there’s lots of gifs of hot ppl and fanfic and frantic fanfic about what the lady versions of the Narcos dudes would be like and in describing the qualities of girl Moncito (loyal ASF, confident, passionate, hot tempered, bit of a loose canon, outrageous style and makeup) we collectively realized Girl Mon is Maddy Pérez. So ofc, I was like “now kiss” and that’s basically this video.

Lastly, the mental image of Ramon literally shooting Nate in the face was not at all a thing I daydreamed about nor delighted in whilst making this look I never claimed to be a pacifist or a role model.

Considering one of our favorite pasttimes is to lounge around and watch movies, it's kind of hard to narrow that list down to just one single movie/show. Keigo's favorite genre though, is comedy so things like family movies and romcoms are actually something he tends to really get into. lol One of his favorites that I have introduced him to is the movie 'Leap Year'. Every now and then we'll pick a day when he has off so we can just sit around and watch a bunch of our favorite movies and shows.

Dabi's favorite movie franchise is Saw. I dunno why, it just is. Man adores that movie series. I've actually never really watched any of them all the way through, but I know enough to know what they're all about anyway. Actually movies with that same kind of premise are his personal favorites. Another series he likes is Final Destination. It's pretty safe to say that when Dabi is picking movies chances are it's a thriller/horror marathon.

I saw a tweet trying to claim Timothee isn’t the closest thing we have to a big movie star but I disagree. I think Wonka and Dune opened the doors for him to be a huge box office draw which is what was lacking for him before. He already has a versatile filmography with big directors and has builded solid relationships with them. He had Scorsese directing one of his fashion campaigns. And he has people like Leo DiCaprio and Tom Cruise giving him career advice. I think his career will only get better once he turns 30. Anya Taylor Joy is for sure rising as a big movie star and she has done quiet a few good things as well before. I think Furiosa is what will give her the big box office numbers as a leading lady. Florence Pugh is a critical acclaim darling and she has crafted a name for herself - she just isn’t a box office draw actress yet. I think Austin Butler is building himself out there… he is making his way with interesting choices. There’s a few names that I think aren’t making waves yet but will be soon enough such as Cailee Spaeny.

Zendaya is a very interesting topic to me because she’s a great actress but I think her hype doesn’t match up with her portafolio. She doesn’t have a diverse filmography or enough accolades in the movie industry. She has yet to prove that she’s someone that can be versatile and live up to her hype. She’s been in many franchises but never as the lead role or main character being targeted for the audience. I think Challengers is a big one for her because it will challenge her status as a movie star/critically acclaimed actress and if she really can pull off numbers on the box office as a titular character.

I think there will never be someone like Jlaw that was able to make huge numbers with original content and not just IPs or franchises but the truth is that the movie industry is way different than before - there’s way more content to consume than it was before. But I feel like her era of dominating both fields was iconic.

I’m so late replying but in the meantime Timothee has signed an ongoing first look deal with Warner Bros Discovery to star and produce so um. Yeah. That person is fuckin wrong and you’re bang on the money. I agree!! 2021 on things have truly shifted in his career. He went from indie acclaimed darling/rising teen heartthrob star/Oscar nominee to proven box office draw. Okay, I do see the argument, he’s been in existing franchises. He needs to lead an original romcom (a la Anyone But You) or original action movie (a la Tenet) or original crime drama (a la… nothing in ages sadly lmao, if we’re talking successes since everything’s a remake or sequel or based on a book or video game now, but anyway). EVEN STILL. He’s pretty A list now and there are v v few Gen Z actors who can say the same. I agree. He’ll def have to keep up the momentum + not make too many mistakes, like the ppl giving him advice is v promising. I agree about ATJ and I too think Furiosa will be HUGE for making her a star in her own right. I agree about Florence too. She’s known but not like. By everyone idk. Agreeeed about Austin and Cailee, sooo many are on the cusp !

I would also add that Harris Dickinson and Joe Alwyn are potentialllyyyy on the cusp but they’re both more of indie boys who are slowly getting more mainstream, like years behind where Timmy was in like. 2018. Ya feel? But for Harris, The Iron Claw is a biggie (loved him in Beach Rats myself) and for Joe I think this new Yorgos movie (Kinds of Kindness) could help him bc of the Poor Things momentum/acclaim for Yorgos in theaters. Not just bc I’m a stan but also Paul Mescal. He’s definitely an indie darling but has risen pretty fucking fast (Normal People breakthrough, Aftersun with that Oscar nom, All of Us Strangers, etc) but he’s leading Gladiator 2. That is HUGE. Big make or break moment for him but genuinely he has the look + talent for movie star. So we shall see.

I think you’re exactly right about Zendaya. And like having the pressure of leading a Luca Guadagnino movie that’s been delayed a ton is not an easy task. I really hope it does well lol I’m in her corner for sure. But yeah I think people definitely do bank on her star power and like her producing and stuff but I could see it being like either she stays in prestige TV and non-risky movies like she has been so far, or she becomes a full blown movie star. And who knows which yet! She’s so young.

Legend of Heroes - To be honest I haven't got deep into the franchise. The only game I've played is Trails first part and I still haven't even finish it yet. But from what little I played I really like it.

That said no matter how good the source material is it doesn't mean it won't fumble. Its hard to tell whether this anime will be good or not. Or whether it can appeal to people who don't know much about the series.

Kubo san - I read the manga. Its cute romcom and all but that's about it. The thing that stand out is the heroine. The way Kubo being drawn in the manga just feels really soft, and there's also her teasing antics to Shiraishi. Their interaction is the kind of pure and innocent one. I remember liking it so I may be just a bit negative now since the recent chapters are a bit boring to me.

Otonari Tenshi - A romcom that I feel more positive about. I read the manga and liking it. It just wholesome and comfy. It has homey feeling to it since most interaction takes place in MC house (or apartment to be exact). The LN also placed on top 5 best ongoing LN so it has that too for hype.

Tondemo skill - A cooking isekai. A guy travels with a legendary wolf while also cooking. Read a bit of the manga and I enjoy the premise. There is one gimmick about the cooking that I don't like though. Also the studio is by MAPPA, who did JJK and CSM I think we can expect some good quality animation. If nothing else the PV shows some promise.

Nier Automata - You know, I actually never played the game. I don't have the console anyway. But I read the LP (including the previous Nier and Drankengard 1) and understand the good story it has and the appeal. Also I think I've heard Yoko Taro said something that the plot will be different from the game.

Kyuuketsuki sugu shinu 2 - It what fills the blank in my heart after Gintama is over. While not as extreme as Gintama it just gives the similar vibe with its wacky humor and banter. Also the main two characters VA really bring soul into the anime.

Will keep and eye on:

Vinland Saga S2 - I read the manga and I know the adaptation is fantastic so far. But I'm not really the type to watch stuff that I already know, unless its like comedy or something.

Bungou Stray Dogs - I watched all the seasons. Its good but my passion over the series kinda waned a bit. So idk.

Sunnflower Headcanons- Movies

Happy birthday to the most rockin person I know!!! @posebean you are creative, you are lovely, and let’s be real I kind of owe you for the little nudges you gave me to get more involved and now we have this amazing friendgroup and friendship...just wowowow. Take some of your faves

Kel and Sunny are the ones in the friendgroup who most enjoy a movie, and when Sunny and Basil start dating they begin to have a standing Thursday night movie date.

They sit in Basil’s living room with various snacks around them curled up together under a thick blanket. They watch through the entirety of the Disney franchise, a handful of truly bad romcoms, comedy movies that cause Sunny to chuckle (the mark of a fantastic comedy) and oddly enough, every single fast and the furious movie. 

It’s great, the best part of both of their weeks. They get to just turn off and not talk for a few hours. They cuddle, alternating who holds who, and almost always end up falling asleep together on the couch. 

There is one single hiccup to movie nights- scary movies. 

As I’ve said before I think Sunny is a total horror movie nut, but I think Basil totally hates them. He’s already a pretty nervous guy, and horror movies would only make that ten times worse. After what happened with Mari, his fear and aversion turns into a whole phobia. But he loves Sunny and he knows Sunny enjoys them a lot, so he ends up in a conundrum. 

Sunny has told Basil a thousand times that he doesn’t care if they don’t watch anything scary, and that he’s unattached to what they watch on their movie nights. He just likes to spend time with Basil and the rest of the group. Basil however is determined to get over his fears. 

Basil asks the Hooligans (the only group of people he knows who would be dumb enough to agree to his plan) to come to his house and watch scary movies with him. Exposure therapy right?

Wrong. 

They’re only about 45 minutes into the first movie before angel is shrieking, Mav is hiding behind the couch, Kim is yelling at Vance for picking such an awful movie, and Basil is just hiding his face and shaking. Kim, the only non scaredy cat in the room, calls Aubrey who in turn calls Kel who had been hanging out with Sunny. All three of them go to visit their blonde friend, who is sitting on the couch surrounded by Hooligans in various states of distress

Aubrey handles her friends, Kel deals with the mess aroudn the room and putting on a better movie, and Sunny takes care of Basil. 

He brings Basil’s hands down from his eyes and holds them both in his own hands, staring at his boyfriend and waiting for him to speak. That’s their way- Sunny doesn’t talk and Basil talks too much. Finally he explains his plan. That he had just wanted to watch something Sunny would like. That Sunny shouldn’t have to watch the same things just because Basil was afraid. 

Sunny reassures Basil that he doesn’t really care about what they watch, and he doesn’t really like to watch horror movies with anyone but Kel anyway. They have a system of their own. Their movie night is more about being together, getting to just be the two of them. That means all the parts- including Basil’s endearing fright around anything with so much as a slight jumpscare. 

Basil feels stupid for causing such a ruckus, but Sunny just kisses his forehead and makes room for himself on the couch next to Basil, who turns into his arms automatically. By this point Kel has put on a movie that is more Basil’s speed. Something animated and soft with a happy ending. Aubrey and the hooligans have stopped yelling by this point and they become transfixed by what’s happening on the screen, crowding around the couch and beginning to demand the popcorn from one another. 

Basil settles his head against Sunny’s chest and closes his eyes. The visions he would normally see after a horror movie are non existent, washed away by the warmth of his boyfriend and the comfort of their friends all around them. He falls asleep before the movie is halfway done

Dylan O’Brien: “I was in this transitional phase – close to a quarter-life crisis”

From YA heartthrob to legitimate leading man – how the 'Maze Runner' star hit his stride after a whirlwind decade

Definitely!” hoots Dylan O’Brien when NME asks if he still has to audition. “I’m not Tom fucking Hanks, bro.” He’s clearly amused by our question, but forgive us for thinking the 29-year-old actor gets cast on reputation alone. A decade into his career, and he’s making an impressive transition from teen TV star and YA franchise hero to charismatic leading man.

New York-born O’Brien cut his teeth on MTV’s hit Teen Wolf series, before landing the lead in the Maze Runner film trilogy based on James Dashner’s hugely popular novels. Leading a band of bright young things that included ex-Skins tearaway Kaya Scodelario, Game Of Thrones’ Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Will Poulter, he honed his craft while racking up nearly a billion dollars at the box office. “My career is a constant acting class,” says O’Brien. “To be able to do the Maze Runner movies simultaneously with Teen Wolf was amazing in terms of getting in reps and working my [acting] muscle.”

Now for the sometimes tricky bit. Many actors struggle with the post-breakout period, but O’Brien is making it look easy so far. This year’s Netflix hit Love and Monsters proved he can carry an old-school family adventure, and new film Flashback (out next week) reveals an appetite for weirder, more cerebral work. He stars as Fred Fitzell, a young man reluctant to buckle down to life as a nine-to-fiver with a boring corporate job and a long-term girlfriend (Mindhunter‘s Hannah Gross). When he runs into a freaky-looking acquaintance from his teenage years, Fred becomes obsessed with finding an old high-school friend he used to drop a mind-bending experimental drug called Mercury with. It’s difficult to say any more without entering spoiler territory, but Flashback is a wild ride underpinned by the idea that we can exist in several realities at once. Even if you follow every plot twist, you might not fully understand the end. “Oh, it’s definitely a headfuck,” O’Brien agrees. “There’s not totally an answer to figure out. There’s a lot of different things that people can take from it.”

Speaking over Zoom from his LA home, O’Brien is bright, thoughtful and really good fun to talk to, especially when he relaxes into the interview, but he clearly knows where his line between public and private lies. When he first read the Flashback script, written by the film’s director Christopher MacBride, his “mind was blown” by just how much he related to Fred. “I felt like I was in this transitional phase of my life that was, you know, sort of close to a quarter-life crisis type thing,” he says. “For whatever reason, it was like me and this script were meant to be. I remember reading it and thinking: ‘I am this guy right now.'”

“There were a lot of things in my personal life that were neglected for a while”

When we ask why O’Brien felt as though he had reached a “transitional phase”, he gives an answer that’s vague but not exactly evasive. For understandable reasons, he doesn’t mention the incredibly traumatic motorcycle accident he sustained while shooting the final Maze Runner film in March 2016. O’Brien suffered severe trauma to the brain and said in 2017 that he underwent extensive facial reconstructive surgery after the accident “broke most of the right side of my face”. Tellingly, he’s never really revealed what happened on set or how it affected him.

Today, O’Brien dances around the details of the accident and other issues he was dealing with at the time, but doesn’t shy away from discussing his inner conflict. “You know, it was a lot of personal things combined with at-a-point-in-my-career things,” he says after a brief pause. He says he’d have been going through some of this stuff anyway, simply because of his age, but it sounds as though success intensified it all. “It was like this whole fucking storm of shit,” he continues. “I was simultaneously so fulfilled and happy about these, like, otherworldly and surreal things that I had experienced in terms of where my career had brought me. I had all this confidence and fulfilment and beautiful people [in my life] – such amazing things to experience at a young age. But at the same time, there were a lot of things in my personal life that were unchecked and sort of neglected for a while.”

O’Brien says that in time, he realised he had to “stop for a second” and “re-explore how I wanted my life to look going forward”. In fairness, you can see why he needed a breather: his career took off while he was still a teenager. After his family moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles County when he was 12, O’Brien contemplated a career as a sports broadcaster – his Twitter bio still bills him as a “no longer suffering Mets fan” – then began posting YouTube videos as moviekidd826. A funny, slickly edited skit titled ‘How to Prepare for the SAT in 45 seconds’, shared when he was just 17, shows he was a born performer and storyteller. YouTube success led to him getting a manager, but his breakthrough role in Teen Wolf still came out of the blue. At the time, he was treading water at a local community college and taking auditions on the side.

Still, he has since taken a rather fatalistic view of this career-making moment. “It’s totally weird because, when I think about it now, I don’t see how it could have happened any other way. I can’t picture myself doing anything else now,” he told Collider in 2011. “It was really sudden and a little random, and not provoked by anything. It was just out of nowhere. It wasn’t my intentional doing.” Today, O’Brien summarises his skyscraper career trajectory succinctly. “I guess I just graduated high school and started acting,” he says. “And then I felt like I was just flying by the seat of my pants and never got a chance to stop.” Thankfully, straight-out-the-blocks Hollywood success hasn’t taken away his sense of perspective. When I say how easy social media makes it to compare yourself unfavourably to others, O’Brien jumps in: “Yeah, that’s very true. I was watching the Billie Eilish doc the other day, and I was like, I’ve done nothing. I’m not an artist at all!”

“No one thought ‘Love and Monsters’ was going to be good!”

O’Brien is also self-deprecating when he talks about being cast in Flashback, suggesting it happened because he had such an intense connection with Fred. “I was honestly like, ‘Who is watching me right now?’ That is the best way I can describe how I was feeling when I came across this script,” he says. “Chris [MacBride, director] and I had this conversation that went so well in terms of [my] understanding this script that I think he’d sent around a lot and [that] very commonly wasn’t understood. I think Chris has even said that the night before shooting, he suddenly had this thought, like, ‘Wait, do I even think he’s a good actor?'”

Though O’Brien has firmly ring-fenced elements of his private life, he’s actually pretty frank about his acting vehicles. He readily admits he was expecting a snobbish response to Love and Monsters, a CGI-heavy hybrid of post-apocalyptic action and romcom that dropped on Netflix in April and topped the streamer’s daily most-watched list. “It means so much that Love and Monsters has gotten the response that it’s gotten,” O’Brien says. “No one thought this movie was going to be good.” His blunt honesty makes me laugh out loud. “No one did though!” he says in response. “And so, fuck that. You know, most of the people who say something to me about the movie, they’re like: ‘I watched Love and Monsters, and it was… good?’ And honestly, that just cracks me up.” For obvious reasons, we hastily decide not to share our response to the film – namely, that it was a whole lot better than expected.

In Love and Monsters, O’Brien plays Joel, a survivor of a so-called “monsterpocalypse” that has bumped humans to the bottom of the food chain. Though he’s known in his colony as a bit of a coward, Joel sets off on a treacherous 80-mile journey to find his high school sweetheart Aimee (Iron Fist‘s Jessica Henwick), which means evading the hungry clutches of various supersize grizzlies including a giant monster-frog hiding in a suburban pond. It’s a simple but pretty out-there premise that wouldn’t work if O’Brien’s performance was even slightly condescending. Instead, his unselfconscious sincerity really sells a film that has as much in common with the family-oriented Robin Williams movie Night at the Museum as darker fare like The Walking Dead.

His obvious affection for the project really comes across during our interview today. “When I read the script, I just thought it was so sweet and funny and smart and unique, but at the same time reminiscent of all these movies that don’t really get made any more,” he says. That’s a fair point: Love and Monsters is neither a fail-safe superhero movie nor a slice of classy Oscar bait. “And when they were talking about how to market this movie, it was so funny hearing all these conversations like, ‘How do we actually get people to watch it?'” he adds. “But that’s a big part of the reason I wanted to do this movie: because it felt like something I missed seeing.”

“I’m lucky to be surrounded by people who want to make something out of love”

So in a way, Love and Monsters was a risk for an actor seeking to establish himself outside of a bankable movie franchise and a hit TV show. O’Brien has only made four films since his final Maze Runner outing in 2018, and insists he hasn’t been tactical with his choices. “I don’t have anyone saying, ‘We need to get you in an Oscar vehicle’, or any of that kind of shit,” he says. “I’m really lucky to be surrounded by people who think like me: that you should do what you’re drawn to, and make something out of love.”

He’s recently finished shooting a mysterious crime thriller called The Outfit in London with Mark Rylance. Directed and co-written by Graham Moore, who won an Oscar for his screenplay to Alan Turing biopic The Imitation Game, O’Brien calls it “quite possibly one of the most special pieces of writing I’ve ever experienced”. He first read the script on a plane and says he “actually stood up and clapped” when he got to the end. Considering O’Brien probably wasn’t flying Ryanair, this reaction presumably attracted a few baffled glances.

Anyway, it must be pretty intimidating walking onto set with Rylance, a multi-award-winning actor revered by his peers – Al Pacino once said he “speaks Shakespeare as if it was written for him the night before” – but it sounds as though O’Brien took it all in stride. He says he’s confident in his abilities, but admits to having a slight wobble whenever he begins a new project. “I’m always sort of re-questioning everything – like, ‘Can I even act?'” he says. “But I think there’s something very natural about that. I think even Rylance could relate to that feeling. Acting is like starting a new year at school every single time.”

At this point in his career, O’Brien has made peace with the fact that some people will have preconceptions about him based on what he’s known for: Maze Runner and Teen Wolf. “People will put you in a box no matter what,” he says. “There was definitely a time when that would get to me, especially when it felt like somebody had a perspective on me that in my soul, I just felt wasn’t accurate.” Still, there’s no doubt he wants to show us what’s really in his soul with more films like Flashback. “If anything,” he adds bullishly, “it just makes me think: ‘Right, I’m really gonna show them now’.”

There's a take that keeps making the rounds about Marvel and military propaganda and it's frustrating me how half-baked this take is, so let's break it down.

I feel like people heard a couple of different things and have gotten the story wrong. As someone who has spent the bulk of my life interested in comics and their various adaptations over the years, I also know a lot about the history and production of this media. So, let's talk about it.

First, it's important to note that any time you see US military stuff in films, the US government sponsored it and had approval rights over the story (which is why the military is rarely shown in a bad light in war films.) ANY time. Yes, comicbook movies, but also war movies, historical movies, hell, even romcoms if there's any military stuff in it.

I think somewhere along the lines, some people heard that the US military sponsored certain MCU films in which the military is heavily featured (like Captain America films and Captain Marvel) and did a full on leap to "the entire MCU is US military propaganda."

I saw a TikTok today in which a girl claims that the MCU has us associating Norse gods with the US military. Thor has basically nothing to do with the US Military, Loki really doesn't (other than that one time they were going to kill him by nuking New York City), Odin and Frigga have basically never even associated with the United States at all, and Frigga has never been on Earth in any of her appearances. You could argue that Thor working with the Avengers in the first movie made him an agent of the US Military, but basically the entire reason Marvel (and DC) makes up fake government agencies is to get around that whole "needs military approval" thing. It's why SHIELD can be proven to be basically a Not-see sleeper organization. It's why ARGUS can be shown to be a super shady organization basically killing people who disobey them (DC.) Those franchises can't say the US Army or Air Force did it, unless they want to lose access to those military vehicles and stuff. But they can make fake organizations and show them as corrupt.

Also, the Avengers are an independent superhero team, which was the whole point of Civil War, but that's another point.

Military propaganda is used sometimes in military specific films. But in general, not just Marvel.

But in the same MCU, you get a movie in which Thor faces the reality of Asgard's imperialism, and in which a tyrannical leader on a distant planet is violently deposed by his slaves and oppressed citizens.

You get a movie in which the violent racism of the US produces Erik Killmonger.

You get to see the constant consequences of Tony Stark's recklessness (Sokovia, the whole situation with Peter Parker and Mysterio.)

It's truly a half-baked take to suggest that the MCU just is military propaganda.

We can criticize the military propaganda in movies, but we have to examine it as a problem with American cinema and not one thing that people enjoy, which allows you to feel superior because you "know" that "Marvel is propaganda". Which just suggests that you don't actually engage with the media, and you just heard a take and adopted that opinion because you think it sounds intelligent and thoughtful. Like, if you watched the films, you'd say "Wow, Captain Marvel was really a 2 hour commercial for the Air Force" not "Marvel has us associating Norse gods with the US military", because they really do not. I don't know anyone who looks at the Asgardian god with a British-esque Australian-laced accent whose adventures mostly take place on other planets and goes "Ah, yes, Thor is our troops!" Or the British accented trickster god who spent most of his time on our screens as a villain trying to outwit Thor, and only went to America to take it over, once, and then to hide his adoptive father in a nursing home.

But another point I'll make is that comics sometimes were propaganda, but like... openly so. Like, the first issue of Captain America ever, where he's punching Hitler, was published before the US entered WW2 and before the public sentiment was that Hitler and the Not-sees were bad. It was published by the Jewish creators of the character to sway public sentiment.

Comics and cartoons were also used to sell War bonds a lot. And sometimes to drum up support for certain things.

And yes, to recruit for the military, sometimes.

But even more often, comics creators would use their comics to express their beliefs and champions causes. And that ABSOLUTELY translates over to the films.

As always, I'm not saying you can't make valid criticisms about Marvel, DC, the MCU and the DCEU regarding the shit they promote, even in subtext.

I'm saying that if you're going to, at least be accurate. At least use valid points. You can't just say Thor is US military propaganda. Just say Captain America and Captain Marvel, or even Iron Man. (Although, even those are arguable at the core of the characters. It's just true that the Military propagandized their films. Captain Marvel was pretty blatant with it, too. With Captain America, though, it's hard to say because the movie itself is kind of criticizing propaganda, though I suppose the Army just liked the visibility.)

Anyway...

The point is, this is a shallow take and requires no examination. The fact is that every movie you've seen (barring smaller indies, most likely) that has military stuff in it, it has to be pre-screened and approved by the military. I mean, that sucks because it removes mainstream filmmakers ability to criticize the military directly, or at least makes it a challenge. (Avengers kind of does, though... because the Avengers have to assemble because the military is incompetent and would rather bomb a US city than make a reasonable choice.) But yeah, it's a film industry problem as a whole, and as of right now, there's no way around it.

It's not Marvel's fault, and even if it was, I'm gonna need a full breakdown of all of the movies and how they're US military propaganda even when they take place in space or aren't about the military or even set in the US. Because how is Guardians of the Galaxy or Ant-Man and the Wasp "military propaganda"?

Like, you can tell when it's there. It's all over Captain Marvel. You can't just make sweeping claims and assume you're right because you watched Iron Man and CA:TFA.
