You know I just realized I never ACTUALLY explained my superhero au huh huh huh. WELL no longer. Taglist and idea below the cut.

PRE-STORY: HotGuy and CuteGuy - Boatem City Dynamic Duo. Scar and Grian - No clue the other exists. Exactly how the Lab, the organization they work for, wants it. Superheroes are not allowed to reveal their identities; not to Lab Techs, the police, not even longtime partners. The only people who know a superhero's identity have security clearance to know - often a hero's direct superior does not even know who they are. HotGuy and CuteGuy are a unique situation - they are the top duo in the city so they work directly under the Lab's directors. But neither of them knows who the other is.

The problem, however, is that when you work with someone that closely in that many life threatening situations, you get close anyway. Heroes don't have powers [yet] - HotGuy and CuteGuy rely on each other, their tools, and their skills to get the job done. HotGuy is just a human dude, and CuteGuy is his avian sidekick. But, secretly and behind the lab's back, the two of them are starting to fall in love. Touches that linger slightly too long. Kisses pressed to wounds from battle. The promise of an identity reveal when it won't endanger their jobs; they think, with their power in the organization, they can sway the Lab to their side.

They're wrong. They also aren't very good at hiding their attraction to one another - and the last thing The Lab wants are heroes more loyal to each other than their organization. One their last mission together, HotGuy and CuteGuy are drawn to a building the Lab got word was going to be raided by some local villains - but when they get in there, too deep to turn back, they find that the place is rigged with Lab branded explosives. They have seconds to react - HotGuy throws himself in front of CuteGuy to try and protect him as the building explodes - and collapses. Both of them are announced dead to the public.

THE STORY: Scar hasn't gone insane, no no. He's just been plotting. The Lab needs to pay for CuteGuy's death, for what they did to him. His legs hardly work anymore. What little movement he can get took a few years of recovery and physical therapy. He's wheelchair bound. HotGuy went into the building and Scar army crawled his way out and never heard from the Lab again. He's pretty sure they thought he was just dead and never checked the local medical records.

Getting back on his feet wasn't easy, but he also got lucky. Unsurprisingly, there were other people in the world interested in getting their hands on a former Hero of the Lab and Scar came across Mumbo and Iskall - two redstone engineers who were more than happy to help Scar out and had the money to match it. The three of them worked their way up from Iskall's home to a custom designed home out of sight of the major cities. Out of sight of anyone. It was built with Scar in mind - ramps instead of stairs, lifts where stairs couldn't be replaced. Lower kitchen counters. And beneath it? A workshop specifically for Mumbo and Iskall to build whatever it was they wanted.

Of course one of the first things the two of them did was build a prototype of cyberlegs for Scar to learn to use. Going from a walking, fit superhero to wheelchair bound isn't easy for anyone, but especially not for a man who wants revenge. It's not the easiest thing to use - they're heavy, for one, and Scar's balance is awful, but he learns. He incorporates them into his physical therapy exercises, and soon he goes from only walking for a few minutes with support, to a few hours every so often. A few hours turns into a full day on a good one. Scar's body relearns to walk, even if it's more exhausting now, even if he can't do it all the time.

All the while, Mumbo and Iskall work and develop new tools, a full biosuit. Their designs get better, smoother, they take less energy to use. They start thinking maybe this could work. Maybe Scar really can oppose the Lab like this.

The Evoker is born on a stormy Thursday afternoon, when the rocket thrusters in the boots finally work and don't explode. And sure, Scar still has bad days - he can't don the suit every day, he probably couldn't go fight a battle every WEEK, but it's something. Their first order of business, the thing that's nagged Scar for all this time, is finding out CuteGuy's identity. Break into the Lab. Get the paperwork. Mourn at his grave.

And okay, it's not THAT easy. They can't just walk into the lab. In fact, Scar doesn't really go in at all. He draws everyone else out. The lab ended any and all duos after the HotGuy/CuteGuy incident, to prevent anyone else from 'going rogue'. They said that HotGuy planted the explosions in the building that 'ultimately' killed him, in an attempt to make the Lab 'look' like the bad guys.

Mumbo and Iskall are incredible engineers and they're able to get into the Lab themselves while Scar plays distraction, their own identities concealed behind half-thought up villain identities. They find CuteGuy's file after some digging, clearly in no rush with the sound of the fight happening outside - but it's thin. It doesn't match any of the other hundreds of dead hero files in the Archives at all. There's no info as to his identity within, and only a small post-it note that reads 'Transferred to The Watcher'.

They don't have time to figure out where THOSE files might be. Scar has just about every hero in the city chasing after him, he's calling for aid, they have to go - but now at least they know he's not dead. At least - they're pretty sure.

Grian became The Watcher out of necessity, and he's regretted that decision every day since the day he made it. 'Oh, let us perform vaguely ethical scientific experiments on you to give you REAL powers, and in return we'll give you a larger salary and better benefits'. Well, how was he supposed to pass that up. He couldn't stay as CuteGuy anyway, not after his partner tried to kill him. Sure it would have been a satisfying 'fuck you I lived', but the Lab wanted to say they were both dead, to protect him from retaliation.

Oh? Why were there Lab explosives in the building? Well they'd been stolen only a week prior - and now of course Grian knew it was because of Hot Guy. And he went and got himself killed in his own stupid show out. Grian couldn't even get revenge. So yeah, he'd signed up for an experimental procedure and, well, woke up blind. They said they'd fix his vision once he got used to his powers, that he needed to learn to use them without the aid of his own sight. And - well - sure. They were right. Bdubs's had learned his powers in a matter of hours from being put in a sensory deprivation tank, so it only made sense that he'd learn sight based powers without his sight a lot faster, right?

So why had it been nearly a year where he was blind. Sure he - basically, more or less, functioned just fine. But using them over long periods of time made him ill. And it wasn't like actually seeing. It was like - sensing that he was seeing. It was like seeing the skeleton outlines of everything around him and learning to discern what belonged to what. He'd been asking for his vision back for months, but they always denied it. Said he needed more training. Transferred him, alone, from Boatem City to Hermit Town. A similar sized city, but with no Lab presence yet. No villain presence, either. He was supposed to mostly be a PR move - help little old ladies cross the street. Save animals. Get people liking and trusting the Lab so they could expand their influence.

So imagine his surprise when only a week into his new role, a villain by the name of The Evoker and his henchmen suddenly arrive and start causing chaos. And, oh, they're trying to trap him.

it takes him a moment to really process the words coming from his moms mouth. charlie was often one to try his best and hide when he was upset. he didn't want to worry others, especially his mother. he knew how often he worried about him. he did need a hug, he did. mouth opens to speak but he has a hard time forcing the words out. so instead he nods his head, taking a step forward and opening his arms, wrapping them tightly around her and resting his head on her shoulder.
