A List of Asian Pacific Islander [American] Romance Authors
Hi friends! It’s that time of year again! Welcome to Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! Like previous years, the upper list is “North American” Romance Authors … which sure SAPAHM/APIAHM is for the USA but … I’d posit someone living in Canada [maybe? generally?] has a closer cultural experience than someone who has never lived in N. America? And for the latter, diversity in reading is always…

May Bonus Prompt
Tumblr media
Welcome to May, which is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
For May, our Guardian Bingo bonus prompt is: Acceptance.
As with all Guardian Bingo prompts, you have the freedom and flexibility to follow your muse and interpret it as literally or figuratively as you wish.
Full details about bonus prompts are below the cut.
Have fun and happy creating! P.S. – Guardian Bingo signups for new and returning participants are open year-round. We’d love to have you join us!
What Is A Bonus Prompt?
An extra prompt issued at the beginning of each month, starting in February. You can fill it in addition to the prompts on your card or swap it out with a square that you don’t like or is giving you trouble.
How Much Time Do I Have To Complete The Bonus Prompt?
Through the end of the month in which it’s issued. February’s prompt has to be filled in February, March’s prompt in March, etc.
Additionally, January 2024 is reserved as a month for turning in bonus prompts you weren’t able to complete during the month they were assigned. What Time Zone Does The Fest Use For Bonus Prompt Cut Offs?
Since the fest's participants are located in many different time zones, you're free to submit your fill for the month so long as there is some place on Earth that hasn't yet rolled over to the next month, even if your home time zone already has.
What Do I Get For Filling Bonus Prompts?
First and foremost, whatever work the prompt inspires you to create
A way to swap out a square on your card – just be sure to keep a record of the swap
The Merit Brush badge (if you fill 5 bonus prompts)
Do I Have To Complete The Bonus Prompt?
Of course not. They’re 100% optional.
Apart From Having To Complete The Bonus Prompt Within The Month It Was Issued, Are There Any Other Changes To The Rules Regarding Fills?
Nope!  Just like with your card, creations of any length and format are allowed provided that they’re not reused or plagiarized. You are also allowed the same freedom and flexibility in interpreting the bonus prompt as the squares on your card.
Can I See A List Of Previous Prompts?
Sure!

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this month!
Mary Lum’s exhibition catalog entitled “Moving Parts (&)” is in-library use only at the Schlesinger Library, but we wanted to include this catalog because Lum’s beautiful exhibition is up at Harvard Radcliffe Institute through June 24th. We encourage you to visit her exhibition while it’s up!
For this exhibition, Mary Lum has created an artist’s book and installation featuring photographs of temporary constructions made from a palette of broken vintage letterforms. The exhibition catalog is also gorgeous.

Happy Asian/Pacific Islander Month!
The month of May was chosen as AAPI Heritage Month because it aligns with a historical time in AAPI history, including the anniversary of when Japanese immigrants first arrived in the U.S. on May 7, 1843. Additionally, Golden Spike Day, celebrated annually on May 10, commemorates the day the transcontinental railroad, a critical piece of U.S. infrastructure that was built primarily by Chinese workers, was completed.
Tumblr media
This year’s theme – chosen by the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) – is “Advancing Leaders Through Opportunity.” According to FAPAC, the theme was chosen in recognition that intentional efforts to build leaders – particularly within immigrant populations – helps advance innovation, close disparities, and drive progress.

MAY 2 2023 BOULDER
Tumblr media
I took Larisa, our cousin Debbie's daughter, out to lunch and for a mani/pedi at La Belle Nail today to celebrate her 21st birthday. I can't believe she has grown up SO much and is a young adult now! I remember her when she was the cute little pixie toddler who became a member of her family when she was two and a half!
Tumblr media
When our cousin Debbie and her husband Bob adopted Larisa they went to pick her up in Poland, after she had been transferred from the orphanage in Belarus where she spent the first two years of her life. We saw her for the first time at their house when they returned and we were all SO happy for her to have a "forever home" and for our good fortune to have this beautiful little person join our extended family.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since then we've watched her grow into a lovely person who is very responsible, kind, compassionate, and hard-working. She struggled with academics in school and during the last few years chose to work in the automotive industry, where she has held various positions in the parts department and customer service, mainly driving customers' cars on the lot for the service team. Now she works for a parts supplier and really likes her job. Hobie is very protective of her and kind to her and she is more like a sister to him than a cousin. Her brothers, Sean and Nick, are also more like brothers to Hobie than cousins.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've always been very close to Debbie's kids because Debbie is more like a sister to me than a cousin and also, because they live here in Colorado and I see them more than I do any of our other nieces and nephews, who are mostly all on the East Coast. In fact, our family members in Colorado, which includes Katie's family, Hobie's birth grandparents, Laura and Jerry, and and his birth aunt, Taryn, and our niece Aimey and her husband, Philip and their son, Indigo, are all very close and we spend as much time together as possible, celebrating many occasions with each other and with our friends, as well.

Larisa lives on her own in an apartment subsidized by a non-profit which helps young adults become independent, and she has two dogs, Holly and Nala. She is a really good "pup mama" and those dogs are so lucky that she came into their lives. They are wonderful dogs and Holly is very relaxed and well-behaved, while Nala has a lot more energy and has given her "mom" her share of headaches! They seem to be settled down now and hopefully will continue to be easier to care for as they mature.

Scratching my head all this time. The 2023 Memorial Day Edition.
For the rest of the month, May is the tipping point of the seasons to change. It’s the last month to feel the end of spring, and a prelude to the month of June and the Summer season. May is also a tipping point to the month for graduations, and retirements, and also recognize our Asian American Pacific Islander friends for their heritage month. And non-folks, don’t get an attitude because it’s…
