I've thought a little bit about if I may have autism, but I've also heard that autism shares a lot of things with ADHD, which I have gotten diagnosed with.. so I'm kinda struggling with whether it's just one or both. Any advice?

There is definitely an overlap of traits, such as problems with executive functioning and sensory issues, and it's possible to be misdiagnosed with one or the other (or diagnosed with one while the other is missed entirely).

Some differences are:

an autistic person might have a few very specialised interests, while someone with ADHD might cycle through a variety of hyperfixations

an autistic person might be strongly focused on routine while someone with ADHD might be more spontaneous or have trouble sticking to routines

an autistic person might struggle with communication due to missing or not understanding social cues while someone with ADHD might have trouble focussing on the conversation

If you have both you might:

have special interests that last a long time while also picking up and dropping multiple hobbies

want a routine but struggle to follow it

miss social cues because you didn't understand them AND because you lost focus

(btw this list is not exhaustive and won't necessarily apply to every ADHD/autistic person.)

If you're looking for a diagnosis, I would recommend looking for someone with knowledge of both. You might still have to have separate assessments though.
