The Jennifer Incident (HC)
So I know we all want to know what the Jennifer Incident is. This is my mind wandering through it. Enjoy.
**TUA S3 Spoilers ahead!!**
OK, so the Jennifer Incident is what killed Umbrella!Ben in the original timeline. It was a failed mission, but why do they refer to it as if it was a third party, which they legit knew the name of? The only mission we get to see is the Umbrellas stopping a bank robbery. What mission could have ended in Ben’s death, likely due to Jennifer, and that Reginald would blame on the others too?
Why would the others feel any guilt if it was not them who killed Ben? Obviously Jennifer was the cause in some way. Were the Umbrellas supposed to defend Ben? If it was a simple enemy-situation, they would have easily just killed Jennifer.
Like, if the situation was that Jennifer was just their villain they were on a mission to kill, Ben could easily trap/kill her himself. And if he didn’t, literally any of the others could have stepped in and stopped or killed her. So what was the complication?
if it was a “mission” I doubt Ben was alone. Though, I suppose that could be the fault: they accidentally left Ben behind and he couldn’t defend himself alone against Jennifer. But who was Jennifer to be that powerful? Like, Ben could literally just use his powers to trap or strangle her, I can’t think of a natural power or weapon that could have killed him if he was on guard.
So, my first thought is that Jennifer was someone they knew. Whether all the Umbrellas were in the room, or Ben was alone with Jennifer, Jennifer had to have the capability to either distract of kill Ben. (or both) They must have known Jennifer to call her by her name rather than by the cause of death.
Could Jennifer have been a love interest? Ben was 16 and probably an easy target to try and sort of woo, so Jennifer could have been a trap to lure the Umbrellas to some other creep like Reginald that wanted to explore their powers.
Or, and I really like this idea, was Jennifer one of the two out of the sixteen we haven’t heard about? Like, yeah there’s Lila and the Sparrows, but that still leaves two people with powers like them. Could they have befriended Jennifer, and when they went on some mission, Jennifer turned out to be on the other side, but they refused to believe it? And so they didn’t believe it until she killed Ben.
But still: the mission was failed. What were the repercussions? Were all of their missions as vanilla as stopping a bank robbery? How could the Jennifer incident be that basic? If the bad guys were clear targets, I feel like the umbrellas would have succeeded. So the only solution my mind can come up with is that they didn’t realize Jennifer was an enemy.
That’s all I’ve got right now. Will make a part 2 if I come up with anything else. Currently rewatching from season 1.
