One Dress a Day Challenge

October: Black Redux

Dune / Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam

A great example of costume as worldbuilding, the Reverend Mother's robes and headdress evoke tradition, mystery, and power. The robe is made of some heavy, rich material with a subtle pattern that is hard to see in the dim lighting of the scene. The tall headdress suggests high rank and also confers an air of authority, while the coarse net veil hides her features just enough to make her inscrutable. All in all, a very effective costume that contributes to making this scene very memorable.

Two questions! What's Leopardstar doing after her death? She got dammed so hard that there was a comet in the sky iirc, and Starclan happily gave Mistystar her lives, so I imagine that Lep is PISSED that her murderer is being welcomed as a hero, while she's rotting in the DF. I would like to know how she feels about Tigerstar's plans, since BB Lep was an active supporter of his idealology

I thiiiink the fallen star thing was a joke, but it is a very funny image to think that any damned spirit becomes one tbh

But actually! Leopardstar and Mudclaw are both kind of ashamed of what they did. Leopardstar is more resigned to her fate, while Mudclaw eventually decides he wants to atone and gets involved with the StarClan bridge.

Being around Tigerstar and a bunch of the worst offenders of TigerClan has brought a lot of it back. Distance had made her begin to feel that there was no need to "throw the kitten out with the tonguewash." Tigerstar himself was bad, yes... but is it *really* so wrong to want a pure, strong Clan? What's wrong with putting RiverClan first?

But now she's back under his claw. Being spoken over, used as a pawn, just like old times. She hasn't confronted the CORE of how her ideology is bad, but she does remember know how humiliating this situation was, and how terrible Tigerstar really is.

But at the same time, she is proud. She cannot let Mistystar go unpunished. She wants "revenge," though, to her "revenge" is a rematch.

On the day she died, Mistystar attempted to poison Leopardstar's food, in a way unintentionally similar to how Leopardstar poisoned Crookedstar before them. So she recognized it right away. It struck her in that moment that she was sick of these dirty, dishonorable tactics.

So she pushed it aside, leapt to the top of the stump, and announced that she had learned of a pack of vicious rogues on the border. "Mistyfoot and myself will confront them. Alone. Don't follow."

Mistystar only won the fight through luck. There was a stone in the river where they fought, and she smashed Leopardstar's head on it until she stopped moving.

So, Leopardstar uses this in her death to hold a grudge. I think on some level she knows it's an excuse, or perhaps a quirk of her pride, that she feels her death was unfair. She believes she gave leadership to Mistystar by covering for her own murder-- and she WANTS that perfect fight.

But before the BOTTE, I plan for her to have a conversation with her apprentice. Hawkfrost's arc is to break free of his father and his legacy... and he needs to speak to his proud, strong leader, who he comes to realize is being used like a tool.

It's another step in his revelation about cycles. How he was used, how he's done the same thing to Ivypool, how people have been doing this to his loved ones long before he was born.

#Now and then I see a passing sentiment of frustration towards writers who write fic where black gets redeemed but leopard doesnt #But understand this; I LOVE Leopardstar.#And I thought a lot about the story I was gonna tell in my redux of TNP #And this story works better with her. Largely because of her supporting cast #Between Misty Sedge Hawk Moth and Storm #They all come together to tell this story much better than Black Russet and Tawny can #And on a less important note... I hate how much they tried to soften Leopard. My favorite video games are story based or FPS. I like The Stanley Parable, Picos School, Cry of Fear, Fallout, Bioshock, Overwatch, Doom, andddddd POSTAL!!!

Postal 2 and brain damaged are probably my favorite, but I love all of the postal games. I really just play those and doom all day.

Fight Club, Natural Born Killers, and Zero-Day are my #1 movies. I like horror shit, specifically psychological and body horror. Saw and Silence of the Lambs are my favorite horror movies. Favorite romcom is How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I'm a dude who likes romcoms, cry about it. I also like Donnie Darko, Requiem for a Dream, Pulp Fiction, and Reservoir Dogs.

I love all music. Ive yet to find a genre i dislike. always open to recommendations. I like musicals and emo music a lot since I grew up with the two. My favorite genres are probably any metal, grunge, ska, pop punk/emo, and jazz. Top 3 bands: Queen, KMFDM, and Nirvana. Top 3 metal genres: Black, Death, and Industrial.

My favorite TC fellas are Andrew Blaze, Adam Lanza, Igor and Viktor, Dzhokhar, the unabomber, and obviously ReB and VoDkA, since I take so much inspiration from those retards. I've been into true crime since I was like 7. Adam was my favorite since i was conscious enough to learn about it, but nowadays Andrew fills that hole in my heart.

redux i

oh my godsndkfkdk

mulder loves scully so much. he is heartbroken at the end of gethsemane. scully tells him that her cancer was given to her to make him believe. this is something he could not stand. we're lead to believe he killed himself after this. and his opening voiceover, he was contemplating it. but he couldn't abandon her and let these men get away with it.

"in four years, i have shared my partner's passionate search for the truth." this acknowledgement that it's her passion too, that she cares about the truth, that it's her quest too! he has come so far since never again. he complimented & validated her in leonard betts, he did as she asked despite his aversion, he tried so hard to make her laugh (and he knew she thought his jokes were funny), he understood she was afraid to autopsy the severed head. and here, he acknowledges it is her life & her choice & her work too. it isn't said to her, but everything he does is to save her, to stop the men who hurt her & bring them to justice. even if it's at the expense of his own beliefs.

his work has never been more important than people. mulder will abandon his beliefs for justice, but especially for scully. scully has already been his priority and this only confirms my beliefs that the way he sought answers in tempus fugit/max and demons was partly for scully. she has been on this journey with him, she has lost & sacrificed and never let him do/face it alone. and he didn't want her to go without answers (without living). he has come so far since never again!!

and later in the season, in patient x/the red and the black, he doubles down on his disbelief, that he's been blinded & lead astray. scully believing when he doesn't believe is painful to him. he doesn't want her to go through what he has, after she's already been through so much (her abduction, melissa, emily). mulder wants so much to protect her and he can't protect her the way he wishes to (aches to).

X-Files S5 Is a Pretty Dark Time for Mulder

S5 is a starkly melancholic season for poor Mulder.

He is incredibly isolated from all other emotional support except Scully (a tenuous connection because of her remission)-- even from his own mother.

Tena, a very close person in the background of his life, has vanished completely after his confrontation in Demons, cutting him out ruthlessly. She never identifies his body in Redux, never calls after his reappearance in Redux II, and never checks in at any point during the entire season (and doesn't check in until Amor Fati.) We know she has called previously: in Colony, she picks up the phone nonchalantly at Bill Mulder's place, and in Sein und Zeit she tries to get a hold of her son. S5 Mulder never reaches out to her, either, despite having done so numerously in the past: End Game, The Blessing Way, Paper Hearts, etc. This is the first time in their relationship that Tena has so callously disconnected from her son, mimicking the estranged relationship he'd had with Bill Mulder; and it explains his extreme reaction in Gethsemane. Mulder has a deep fear of being alone (fear stated in Aubrey and reiterated in Je Souhaite); and, without his mother there, the only person to stand between himself and his gun is Scully (as she had done before in Demons.) It also explains his devastation in Sein und Zeit: Tena had reentered his life, slightly, after Amor Fati; and he lost her again as well as that buffer other than Scully. He may not be suicidal; but Mulder cannot be alone.

Scully is Mulder's only source of strength, gladly taking on that challenge after she recovers from her remission.

But, while she had taken the time to reflect on her life and her choices once at death's door, she finds Mulder had not ("Yeah, once at the Ice Capades"): it was too painful to consider a life without her; and he would rather keep his mind narrow-mindedly focused on his goals, like usual, than have to take the blinders off and consider "life on this planet" so soon after almost losing his own sense of "normalcy."

Not only that, but he's burnt out-- for months he avoids aliens, the Conspiracy, all that tripe-- and that quickly turns to fear when Scully begins to automatically fill his shoes in his "absence" (which she does to a greater extent in S8.) Scully, meanwhile, tries to draw him out with a cheese surprise in Detour, or dish out jokes by a campfire; but he is so focused on his loss of faith (like he's hyper-focused on his losses in the past: S1 about Samantha, S2 about his job and her abduction and his clone sister, S3 about his father's death and Conspiracy involvement, S4 with his sister again and her cancer and his mother, etc.) that he cannot see the forest for the trees.

Not only all of the above, but Mulder also has to watch Scully's reclaimed life fall more and more apart: the very men who his father worked with stole her ova, hybridized her child, and treated her only little girl like a lab rat every day of her life (exactly like he suspects they've done to his sister, or still do.) He has to watch Scully decide to let her daughter die and close back up again so that she can grieve and heal. His family's ties have not only destroyed their own lives, but the life of the woman he loves as well.

And after all of that, Mulder can't stop Scully's chip (the very chip he lied, cheated, and stole for; and which she can never live without) from mind-controlling her to her near death at the hands of the very aliens he no longer believes in. The guilt from his distrust during Patient X and The Red and the Black twist him up even more; because he doesn't know anymore. That "knowing" had always been his navigator through the lies and half-truths of this long and convoluted journey. Scully cannot rely on him, he thinks, because he cannot rely on himself.

Every action he takes in S5 leads him to greater self-doubt, with Scully saving him over and over again:

keeping him warm in Detour, trying to comfort him in Post Modern Prometheus, making the executive decision to release Mulder from his obligation to the quest in Emily, trying to pull him from Linda Bowman's control in Kitsunegari, taking a vacation to recover mid-season in Chinga, dragging him from the Kill Switch trailer, covering for his drug-fueled actions in Bad Blood, trying to reignite his passions and beliefs in Patient X and The Red and the Black, trying to understand his precautions in All Souls, beginning to doubt him in The Pine Bluff Variant, and finally reaching an exhausted breaking point in Folie a Deux. When Diana Fowley shows up in The End, Scully has nothing left to offer, believing that Diana stepped in and effortlessly cleaned and stitched up the wound that had been festering all season: handing Mulder paranormal proof of everything, government and aliens included.

And, again, Mulder loses all of it.

It makes sense why her buoyancy in FTF is so easily shattered: she's glad that Mulder is finally striking out, making his own path on the roof; she rewards his efforts with a tease and some amazing banter. But when her support ends up with both of them investigated by OPR and Mulder on the brink of losing his job (which is, what she perceives to be, the only think keeping him together) she slumps: she’s tried and tried and tried, and nothing has worked. She has failed him; and has taken him down not by malicious action, but by being herself.

This leads perfectly into the rest of the movie (for another time.)

The best part of this series? All of these complicated, morose happenings occur without pulling the entire season's mood down-- because Mulder and Scully are so in sync that, as dour as Mulder gets, Scully is able to pull his head above water. And, while this was a rougher time for Mulder than usual, Scully's support and strength kept him going and "fairly happy."

In Summary

Tena cuts her son out of her life for unexplored reasons (likely due to self-preservation: covering up the past by lying to herself, avoiding her guilt by pretending it never happened) after he confronts her.

Mulder feels incredibly alone, save for Scully-- and forgets to thank her or, at least, let her know (that's why FTF is so important.)

Scully supports Mulder all season, her confidence in his stability diminishing from The Red and the Black until Pine Bluff Variant, becoming obliterated in Folie a Deux, and restored by realizing that he'd been right and she'd been just as "insane" to ignore what was in front of her face. By The End, she has placed all these swirling doubts squarely on her own shoulders, eroding her own self-confidence by comparing her skills and abilities with Diana's seeming ease at swooping in and setting Mulder's world to rights.

And finally: Scully, really, REALLY needed that vacation in Chinga.

"So to answer your first question," Tom replied, "Voldemort did complete the ritual needed to secure an object as his Horcrux – it was, if I recall correctly, meant to be his own wand, a rather stupid choice considering that, usually, the more one interacts with their own Horcrux, the more likely it is that the soul fragment inside will try to break free and reattach itself to the whole. In any case, I obviously found a better place to reside, and Harry and I don’t seem to have the same problem.”

“I don’t think I can agree that my godson was a better place for Voldemort’s soul to end up,” Sirius said, looking rather sick.

“Sirius, stop,” Harry said, wrapping his arms protectively around Tom. “I’m glad he found me.”

“We’ll have to agree to disagree,” Sirius replied, running a hand through his hair. “However, what’s done is done, I suppose.”

“As to your second question,” Tom continued, “there is very little properly understood about the true nature of Horcruxes, let alone those made of a living being. And that’s to say nothing of a human Horcrux. As far as I know, Harry is the first in recorded history. To say that his own soul greatly affected mine is an understatement to the grandest degree.”

“Fine,” Sirius barked. “So he brought you back on love alone. I can pretend to accept that. What I can’t just blindly accept is the idea that Voldemort, knowing about Horcruxes, waited until his planned murder of my godson to create one. There must be another one out there.”

Tom debated with himself for a moment. “If there were, what would you do?”

“I would find it and destroy it,” Sirius replied instantly. “Even if I couldn’t tell anyone else –”

“No!” Harry exclaimed. “You can’t, you really can’t!”

“Harry!” Sirius reprimanded. “Do you understand what Horcruxes do? If Voldemort’s made one, it tethers him to life. He’ll never truly be gone until it’s destroyed!”

“I know that!” Harry cried. “But that’s Tom’s soul, he needs it back!”

“So Voldemort did make another Horcrux,” Sirius concluded, looking at Tom. “And you… you want to... what, reabsorb it? What about Voldemort himself? So long as you exist, he’ll still be out there.”

Tom sighed. In for a Sickle, in for a Galleon, he supposed. “Yes, he made several,” he admitted. “Harry’s death was meant to be used for number six – a seven part soul, an auspicious number, to be sure, but Voldemort was an idiot. No one’s meant to break their soul up that many times.”

“No one’s meant to split their soul at all, Tom.” Sirius said, aghast. “Merlin’s sake, the soul is sacred, it –”

“I know that now,” Tom interrupted, his arms flinging out in front of him, unbidden, in exasperation, “which is why I’m going to undo what Voldemort did. I’ve already done it once, there’s only four pieces left now.”

“You mean, aside from Voldemort himself and the piece of yourself you must have left behind in Harry after resurrecting,” Sirius accused. Tom shrugged — no use in denying it.

“That piece is mine,” Harry said fiercely. “I don’t care that it used to be Voldemort’s soul, it’s Tom’s now, and I love it.”

“Harry, that’s not – you can’t –“ Sirius ran a hand over his face. “Argh, you kids are weird.”

October: Black Redux

Tomorrow Never Dies / Teri Hatcher as Paris Carver

I like the shape of this dress, but I'm not sure what to make of the feathery decorations. They add textural interest, but possibly the actual feathers are just a tad too much? I do like the subtle ruching around the bust; it gives the look of a strapless dress with a separate shoulder cape, although the "cape" appears to be attached. There's also the suggestion of a belt or waistband before the skirt falls smoothly to floor-length, without any special adornment.

Concept sketch: Electric-type Kaito

Pokemon: Toxtricity Song inspiration: Imitation Black

I of course had to include at least one SCL song in this project and Imitation Black feels like the most iconic to me. This outfit was a lot of fun to design, I tried to combine Imitation Black's visual kei style with a more pop/grunge look to match Toxtricity. It probably needs some more refining but I like how it looks so far. I'm kind of sad that I had to cut out the little top hat though, it just wasn't blending well with the design. Maybe I'll figure out a way to incorporate it back it. Or replace it with something else.
