So, a lot of this script, “Their Very Presence (will wreck it)” takes place in what in what I like to call the “Black Space.” It’s a brilliant literary place for playwrights that allows us to rely on the audience’s imagination to fill in the unnecessary parts, while we provide the essentials: the people. ⁣ ⁣ It comes from my playwriting days, when I’d often write character-driven stories that could be done on a shoestring budget, in a Black Box theater. I relish character-driven narratives, whether on stage or screen - but bringing it onto the screen can be a bit challenging. ⁣ ⁣ How does the Black Space translate onscreen? ⁣ ⁣ Obviously, you can just have a pure black background, but I wanted to try something more complex visually. "Relational & Improvisational Therapy", and "When Theater is in conflict with contemporary art". In this scene, aspiring actors of Finest City Improv, assumed the role of unwanted paintings being taken out to the trash. This was truly a heart wrenching performance, one that emanated feelings of alienation, objectification, and failure. We were so pleased to have their real life contribution, shared in terms of visual art! Although, they were initially a reluctant addition to #HotelsMotels (Unofficial Art Fair 2018), it was a happy surprise. If we had only known ahead of time we would have directed fair goers to their little theater. This absolutely deserved an audience! Everyone needs a little attention.
