Tender Is The Flesh should come with ALL the warnings, especially if you have a delicate stomach! This Argentinian work of fiction was translated by Sarah Moses and it was so phenomenally memorable, I’m struggling to decide where to start telling you about it. ⁣ ⁣ Set in a dystopian future, this is the story of a virus that has poisoned all animal meat forcing humans to find other food sources. Unfortunately, that leads to the farming and slaughter of human meat, called “special meat” which becomes a legal and rather exclusive luxury. ⁣ ⁣ Our male lead Marcos, manages one of the slaughterhouses and organises tours for curious folk who want to observe the processes in which humans are raised, killed and then flanked. Marcos is also dealing with his own personal demons. His wife has left him after their infant son has died. This leads him to make some very questionable choices in order to ease his pain and carry on living. ⁣ ⁣ This slim but mighty little novel really doesn’t hold back. The slaughter and preparation of human meat is explored in full, gory detail so be prepared for some shocking, stomach-churning moments. Apart from the obvious shock factor, I really appreciated how this novel explored the cruelty of slaughterhouses and although it makes no personal or political statements, you might just question eating meat for a little while after you’ve finished. ⁣ ⁣ Tender Is The Flesh definitely won’t be for everyone but I loved how the author explored some controversial and let’s face it, triggering moments (please be aware if you want to read it!). It’s incredibly dark, supremely disturbing but absolutely thought-provoking. Another fantastic read with the #bitcrackbookclub !⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 #bookstagramuk #scottishbookstagrammer #tenderistheflesh #booksintranslation #readingtranslatedliterature #argentinianbooks #agustinabazterrica #sarahmoses #lovetranslatedfiction #readingonmykindle #buddyreadswithfriends #darkliteraryfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CnuvuvGLv5H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

🚀LAUNCH SOMETHING!🚀
My recent book post for August.
Launch Something! is a sci-fi novel written by the award-winning South-Korean author; Bae Myung-Hoon and translated by Stella Kim.
Plot (from the publisher) “Earth is experiencing a sweltering heatwave caused by a second “sun” – a shining object in the sky that either looks like Pac-Man or a pizza missing a slice, depending on who you ask. As this object increases in size and risks making Earth uninhabitable, the Korean government decides it has to do its part and help the US-led Allied Space Force. Launch Something! is a sci-fi novel about a Korean Space Force that contains his quirky brand of political satire. “
If you like science fiction, and Korean literature and you don’t mind a little bit of spice in the name of political satire then you are definitely in for a treat.
🚀☀︎Have a lovely and peaceful day with loads of books and follow me for more bookish posts ☀︎🚀

cannot wait to get started on “the familia grande” by camille koucher, whose english translation is out today from @otherpress (who was kind enough to send me a copy to review). about the book: “The Familia Grande poignantly explores the dynamics of abuse, and the questions of guilt and shame surrounding it. Published in France in 2021, the book sparked an important conversation about incest, and the attitudes and laws that have so often allowed influential men to evade consequences for their crimes.” #bookstagram #booktok #bookish #bookworm #bookblog #bookreview #bookrecommendations #booksintranslation #france #metoo #metoostory #amreading #bookmail #arc #arcreview #readingjournal #bookaddict #bookstagrammer #bookblr #bookphotography #booklove #darkacademia #darkacademiaaesthetic #memoir #memoirbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CdrHAb3vGXx/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The White Book by Han Kang
A short and recommended read for lovers of Kang's work and a welcome piece on death and grieving. #bookreview #hangkang #thewhitebook #koreanliterature #booksintranslation #eightsentencereview
4/5 stars.Read from October 18, 2021 to October 20, 2021.Hardcover, 160 pages. An 8 Sentence Review: Following my love of The Vegetarian and Human Acts, The White Book is more of a poem than a novel. The entirety of the book revolves around the colour white as the narrator reflects on the death of a sister she never got to meet. “…a face as white as a crescent-moon rice cake.” Each chapter of…

5⭐️s Finished!!!!!! . Story-time: I bought this book back in November. Because it is a trilogy of more than 1300 pages, I decided to read it in December. December came and I had finals so I could not read it. And then I didn't read it in January as well. Not reading this in December was when my reading slump sank in. I stopped reading, stopped using #bookstagram as well. I did read a few books but they were small, less than 200 pages contemporary novels. I cannot count the number of books I have picked up and put down since December 2021. I cannot count the number of books I promised I would read but never was able to. But finally I don't know one day, probably a week ago, I picked up this book and started it. Really loved it from the beginning but I remained cautious because I liked Kafka on the shore in the beginning but the ending confused me a lot. Now I loved this book from the beginning till the end. This is not a book I would recommend you to read as a starter to Murakami. Try reading some other of his works, probably his short stories and then pick this up. But I think he is not an author one must give up if one does not like one of his works. . . . . #books #bookstagram #book #bookstagrampakistan #booklover #bookshelf #booksintranslation #harukimurakami #bookaddict #bookaholic #bookaesthetic #bookphotography #darkacademia #read #reading #readingtime #japaneseliterature #novel #fiction https://www.instagram.com/p/COsoD4lLB01/?igshid=15wzdrzfxdgs5

This Korean science fiction anthology edited by Sunyoung Park & Sang Joon Park was fantastic. Some of the individual stories weren't quite stellar, but the collection as a whole was. Each individual story comes with a brief intro on the author & the story (and a creepy illustration with weird bubbly veiny people/creatures). If you like to go into stories knowing nothing beforehand, I recommend you read the intro after reading the story. The stories for the most part were a bit dark & depressing, with several having some political and/or social commentary. Highlights for me were Readymade Bodhisattva (kinda slow & almost boring at times but it's really stuck with me), Perfect Society, Storm Between My Teeth, Between Zero & One (so weird & I bought a short story collection by this author right away), The Bloody Battle of Broccoli Pain, and Our Banished World. * #funaekreads #funaekbooks #instabooks #instareads #pugsandbooks #bookreview #sciencefiction #sciencefictionanthology #shortstory #shortstorycollection #translatedfiction #booksintranslation #koreanbook #koreananthology #koreanauthors #koreansciencefiction #readymadebohisattva #kayapress https://www.instagram.com/p/CNnzHVOLFtl/?igshid=1kdbv9si679tb

I love this little vintage Penguin paperback of Bonjour Tristesse that was lurking in the basement of my favourite vintage shop. It was full of newspaper clippings about the author, dated from 1959. The previous owner was obviously a massive fan!

1Q84 ~ Haruki Murakami
1Q84 ~ Haruki Murakami
Rating: 2/5 1Q84 is such a difficult book for me to review in some ways because for a long time it has felt like a failure of mine. I started my journey with this book in January of 2019 after finding a full length copy at a local used bookstore. I still remember the day. My partner and I were out hiking in the Green Mountain National Forest and stopped by this little bagel and books shop. It…

Review: Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin 📚 Had some wild vivid dreams after reading this collection. Also woke up in the middle of the night and thought of the perfect way to describe how reading made me feel, which obviously I now cannot the remember. The best I’ve got is: unsettled, a little confused and in awe. 📚 My favourite stories were: Headlights Mouthful of Birds My Brother Walter The Size of Things 📚 I read this book for both @thereadingwomen challenge and @the.storygraph Translation Challenge for book by a South American Author in Translation. 📚 Image description: close up of a book at an angle, you can see most of the title, ‘A Mouthful of Birds’, and part of the author name ‘Samanta Schweblin’ 📚 #MouthfulOfBirds #SamantaSchweblin #ShortStoryCollection #ShortStories #BooksInTranslation #BookReview #BookstgramAustralia https://www.instagram.com/p/CMEKeHNgbyr/?igshid=7eics56om6b

Hello everyone and happy Friday! Today is sadly the last day of my holiday and I’ll be back on that sleeper train home tonight 😟 (Scotland always has my soul though 😉😂) Summer Island was bought for me by my lovely sister @chrissireads in our quest to read Kristin Hannah’s back catalogue together. Sadly it left me with quite disappointed. It was incredibly predictable and I never felt connected to the characters at any point! 😬 Moving Parts was my next acquisition from one of my new favourite publishers @tiltedaxisbooks it’s described as surreal and puncturing short stories from the Thai master of the form. In a pink-walled motel, a teenage sex worker brings a grown man to tears. A love-struck young boy holds the dismembered hand of his crush, only to find himself the object of a complex ménage à trois. A naked body falls from the window of a twenty storey building, while two female officer-workers offer each other consolation in the elevator. Sounds right up my street!! Finally, I preordered Reputation as I loved Anatomy Of A Scandal by Sarah Vaughan so much! It follows a politician whose less than perfect personal life is thrust into the spotlight when a body is discovered in her home. 😳 I’d love to know your thoughts on any of these books or authors. Let’s have a chat in the comments! #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookhaulheaven #newbooksplease #kristinhannah #summerisland #movingparts #tiltedaxispress #booksintranslation #prabdayoon #muipoopoksakul #reputation #sarahvaughan #lovenewbooks #booksimexcitedabout https://www.instagram.com/p/ClY8rACLJei/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#30booksin30days Book 21 Beartown by Fredrik Backman ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Usually I love Backman’s books, but Beartown is just a lot. It centers around a small hockey community in the Swedish forest. If you know me, you know I’m not really into sports. Beartown is about the darkness a community can hide. There are some things that even endless cups of coffee can’t fix. CW: Rape as a major plot point, racism, teen drinking, suicide, profanity, fat phobia, racial slurs, suicidal ideation, victim blaming, ableism, pregnancy, assault, guns, child abuse, alcoholism, death of a child, vomit, drugs, bullying, homophobia, panic attacks, sex jokes, grief, death of a partner _______________________________________________________ #bookstagram #booksintranslation #beartown #hygge #home #september #knitwear #swedishliterature #sweaterweather (at Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFppDhkg178/?igshid=16nyz0c6bxhc1
