MONTHLY MEDIA: April 2024
Ooooooooh it's getting warmer and sunnier and the days are getting longer! Yet I still stay inside to read and watch tv and stuff.
……….FILM……….
Tumblr media
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985) Loved it. A comedy that is so generous with the types of humour (sight gags, absurdist stuff, one-lines). Watching it I was thinking "oh this reminds me of watching Elvira" and then Cassandra Peterson shows up in the biker gang! Loved the whole thing.
Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) I've been meaning to watch this ever since Sam Bosma shared the incredible poster he did. If I didn't know Hayao Miyazaki directed this then I would've spent the entire runtime thinking "whoa real Hayao Miyazaki vibes here." Great standalone film if you know nothing about Lupin III.
……….TELEVISION……….
Tumblr media
Fallout (Episode 1.01 to 1.08) Having never played the games, I was really interested if this series would work for someone like me. It took a bit to connect and it mostly landed. Not bad at all but it hasn't really left a lasting impression.
Succession (3.05 to 4.02) Can't believe it's almost over. What I appreciate about this series is that it knows the show is at its best when the core trio are together and does everything it can to highlight this. But never forget that they are all awful people. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Delicious in Dungeon (Episode 1.14 to 1.17) This adaptation of the comic continues to be excellent. I hope folks dig the show so much that they decide to read the series as it offers a few more character details that are fun to discover.
X-Men '97 (Episode 1.01 to 1.07) Wasn't a big fan of X-men (comic or the show) as a kid but heard enough good things that I figured I'd check it out. While I'm not immune to the nostalgia of the intro, I really do think the show is fantastic. The story feels dramatic and just mature enough to allow for great character moments and the animation is top-notch. Really glad I gave this a shot.
……….YOUTUBE……….
Tumblr media
Why I (Used to) Hate Video Essays by Extranet Shaquille and Yellow Paint by Caleb Gamman Just a coincidence but these two unrelated videos both veer away from their main topics to become a study in...media consumption/attention culture/the struggles of existing in our current times. (Video Essays) VIDEO (Yellow Paint) VIDEO
……….READING……….
Tumblr media
Appointment with Death by Agatha Christie (Complete) This feels more like the first Christie book I read (There is a Tide, still my favourite) in that there are twists and turns around engaging characters. Plus the victim was such an engaging villain. Based on the handful I've read so far, I think this would be a good entry point into Christie's works.
Tumblr media
A Spectre Haunting: On the Communist Manifesto by China Miéville (Complete) After hearing a number of interviews with Mieville I was really excited for this but found the whole thing...frustrating. Maybe I'm not smart enough or maybe I'm not the target audience, but I don't really know who this book was written for. My gut tells me the writing is practically impenetrable unless you have a masters in English and that doesn't feel like the right fit for the subject matter. If brevity is the soul of wit then I'll leave it there and just say that the last couple pages, written clearly and with conviction, did more for me than the previous 150+ pages.
Delicious in Dungeon Volume 13 (and also Volume 6) by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Rereading and also catching up on the latest volume! It's nearly over! Volume 13 is the penultimate chapter and I'm still impressed by how consistent the characters, humour, and dedication to theme this series remains. Really really incredible.
……….GAMING……….
Tumblr media
Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) Tuesday crew is picking off the invading Elves fairly effectively but at what cost? And what are the repercussions of an act like this? Only time will tell. Also you can read all about their adventures here!
Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 crew continues to dig into the mysteries of the mud banks but might get sidetracked by the fame and fortune of wrestling.
And that's it. See you in May!

An Alaska woman who murdered her friend in the hope of a $9 million payoff has been jailed for 99 years.
Denali Dakota Skye Brehmer, one of two young people charged in the 2019 killing of Alaska teenager Cynthia Hoffman in a murder-for-hire scheme, was jailed on Monday after pleading guilty in February 2023 to first-degree murder.
Court documents showed that Brehmer was 18 when she and two other teens were catfished online by 21-year-old Darin Schilmiller, who pretended to be a millionaire named “Tyler” and offered the teens $9m for the “rape and murder of someone in Alaska”.
He also asked the teens to send him photos and videos of the killing, according to court documents.
Brehmer agreed to the offer, and enlisted the help of four friends, Caleb Leyland and Kayden McIntosh, along with two unnamed juveniles.
Authorities accused Brehmer and her alleged accomplices of luring Hoffman to Thunderbird Falls in Chugiak, an unincorporated community in Anchorage, under the guise of a friendly hike.
During the hike, Hoffman – who thought of Brehmer as her “best friend” – was duct-taped and shot in the back of the head and put into a river, officials said.
Authorities added that the group had tried to burn Hoffman’s body before sending her family a text that she had been dropped off elsewhere.
Police found Hoffman’s body one day after she was reported missing.
Kayden McIntosh, who was 16 at the time, was charged with murder for allegedly shooting Hoffman in the head. His case is pending trial.
Meanwhile, Brehmer was handed the maximum sentence for her role in the killing, according to the Alaska Department of Law.
“She may not have pulled the trigger, but this never would have happened it if it weren’t for Denali Brehmer,” said Patrick McKay, Anchorage assistant district attorney, during sentencing.
“She executed Cynthia Hoffman in a murder-for-hire plot. She conspired with numerous other individuals in and outside of Alaska, including juveniles, forever altering everybody’s life,” he added.
Anchorage Superior Court Judge Andrew Peterson called the killing “tragic and senseless”, adding that Brehmer showed no remorse. He said he hoped her sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
Darin Schilmiller of New Salisbury, Indiana, was also sentenced last month to 99 years in prison for his role in Hoffman’s murder after being extradited to Alaska.
Caleb Leyland pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in November. He is scheduled for sentencing on 10 June.

Roundtable 3: Till The Clouds Roll By (1946)
Richard Whorf's Till the Clouds Roll By is a 1946 biopic of American Broadway pioneer Jerome Kern. It features renditions of Kern's famous songs from his musical plays performed by contemporary stage artists. The film follows Kern's journey from his early days as a struggling songwriter to his rise as one of the most influential figures in American musical theater.
Jerome Kern was an American composer whose breakthrough came with the musical Show Boat (1927). Throughout his career, Kern composed numerous hit songs that became standards of the American songbook. Kern's influence extended beyond Broadway, as he also composed music for Hollywood films. He received multiple Academy Award nominations for his film work, including for the score of "Swing Time" (1936), which featured the classic song "The Way You Look Tonight."
Tumblr media
What are the social aspects within the film’s narrative that align with the film’s songs?
In Till the Clouds Roll By, every song serves as a snapshot from one of Jerome Kern's musicals. Each of his musicals has various themes that are reflected in these performances. For instance, the film delves into the pursuit of artistic success and recognition within the competitive world of musical theater, as seen in the song "Make Believe" from Showboat. Performances of songs like "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "The Folks Who Live on the Hill" create sentiments of longing, desire, and devotion, mirroring the characters' experiences of love and heartache against the backdrop of their personal and professional lives.
Through these performances, audiences are transported into the intimate moments of the characters' lives, witnessing the highs and lows of their relationships unfold on screen. The emotional depth and vulnerability conveyed through these songs resonate with audiences on a profound level, inviting them to reflect on their own experiences of love and longing.
2. How do the historiographies of previously recorded songs inform audience relationships with the musical's narrative and performers?
By incorporating these well-known songs into the film, Till the Clouds Roll By establishes a connection with audiences who may be familiar with the original recordings. The historiographies of these songs evoke a sense of nostalgia and recognition, inviting audiences to engage with Kern's work on a deeper level. As audiences listen to familiar tunes reinterpreted within the context of the film, they are reminded of past performances and experiences, enriching their understanding and appreciation of the narrative unfolding on screen. Each performance is set against the backdrop of theatrical stages that include similar set designs and costumes to those of Kern's musical plays.
A notable example of this homage is Caleb Peterson's rendition of "Ol' Man River" from Kern's seminal work, Show Boat. In the film, we see the character Joe, a Black dock worker grappling with the struggles faced by African Americans along the Mississippi River. Peterson's performance captures the essence of Kern's vision for the film. He is dressed in attire similar to Joe's character and surrounded by a stage design reminiscent of the riverfront setting.
youtube
Later on, the film's set design shifts completely and we see Frank Sinatra's rendition of "Ol' Man River" towards the end. Sinatra's performance is set against the backdrop of a grand orchestra and adorned in an all-white suit.
youtube
While Peterson's rendition authentically captures the struggles of marginalized communities and serves as a powerful commentary on racial inequality, Sinatra's interpretation almost overshadows this narrative depth. The contrast between Peterson's portrayal of a Black dock worker and Sinatra's performance with overwhelming privilege and sophistication, dilutes the real meaning behind the song, shifting the focus away from the authentic representation of racial struggle.
Tumblr media
3. What musical genre/style drives the film’s score, and how does the genre/style (re)define the film as a musical?
Alberto Mira's "Introduction: The Hollywood Musical is Dead. Long Live the Hollywood Musical!" provides valuable insights into the evolution and significance of the Hollywood musical genre, which can be applied to understanding Till The Clouds Roll By. Mira's discussion of the Hollywood musical's cultural significance underscores the importance of the genre as a reflection of societal values and aspirations. Till the Clouds Roll By embodies this aspect by exploring themes of ambition, love, and social justice through its musical performances and narrative arcs. The film serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of the Hollywood musical genre and its ability to resonate with audiences across generations.
The film's score is predominantly driven by the musical genre/style of traditional Broadway and musical theater. This genre/style is characterized by orchestration, melodies, and elaborate vocal performances that serve to advance the narrative and evoke the emotions of the different characters. The genre/style of traditional Broadway and musical theater (re)defines the film as a musical by infusing it with elements such as elaborate song and dance numbers, theatrical staging, and larger-than-life performances. These elements serve to heighten the emotional impact of the narrative and create a sense of spectacle that is characteristic of the musical genre.

orchid ⇢ what’s a song you consider to be perfect?
abelia ⇢ do you have a particular piece of jewelry you always wear or can’t part with?
daffodil ⇢ do you have siblings? if yes, in what ways do you think you’re similar to or different from them?
aloe vera ⇢ what’s something (mundane) you really want to experience in life?
nutmeg ⇢ how’s your room/home decorated? do you have a specific theme or style going on?
papyrus ⇢ if you put your ‘on repeat’ playlist on shuffle, what’s the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
(for this ask meme)
orchid
I’m gonna go with another Caleb Etheridge song I adore:
Caelestis (Spotify | YouTube)
The name. The vibes. Everything.
abelia
Not really. I rarely wear jewelry of any kind because I’m particularly sensitive to how it feels on my skin. The few pieces I do have are worn based on what I think looks best with my outfits, so if I suddenly lost all of them in a fire or flood, I would hardly notice they’re gone.
daffodil
I have one younger sister. While we’ve often been perceived as near opposites, I’ve come to see how we’re similar, but with very different approaches to the same things.
We’re both stubborn, but I can be reasoned with more easily.
We both react unfavorably when things change suddenly, but she gets louder while I go silent.
We’re both conflict-avoidant, but she’s more likely to speak her mind anyway.
She’s more of a fighter, but I’m more intense.
She’s quicker to take action, but I’m more decisive and self-assured.
She’s better at interacting with people, but I’m better at capturing an audience.
She’s grounded and present while I’m lost in my head.
She treasures the past and appreciates what is, while I value the future and struggle to be content with anything.
She’s meadows of wildflowers, turbulent ocean waves, and fairy lights, while I’m constellations, thunderstorms, and books with gold tooled covers.
…and so many more differences I could come up with.
aloe vera
I can’t think of any more mundane things, so I’ll go with something else:
I’d love to own a motorcycle someday—electric is preferred, since it looks more Cybertronian. lol
nutmeg
For all that I love interior design, my actual room and living spaces are in total disarray. I lack the resources and motivation to decorate the way I want to, but I know exactly which theme(s) I’d go with. I’m not sure how to describe it… However, I will say I have expensive tastes and am quite proud of that fact.
papyrus
Last Breath by J.T. Peterson (Spotify | YouTube)
This one’s been on rotation in my dishwashing playlist for a little while now.
It also happens to be one of the songs in my TFP Optimus playlist. It makes me think of him because he fought for peace and unity for Cybertron and humanity until his very last breath, figuratively speaking.

hiii :) FNAF 4 Chica bully design. Cassandra Kate, she/her
She's kinda like the leader of the bully group. Described her earlier as "calm, but in a mob boss kind of way", which I still feel fits
Originally I wasn't gonna have her be female because I think that like... having the one with the Chica mask be the only girl is just. Too easy for me lmao. But she appeared out of the abyss with the name Cassandra Kate and I couldn't just deny her right to be called that... So I just decided that both her and Bonnie bully would be girls :p
Bonnie bully is named Judith "Judy" Iyer, and I have a design for her in mind. Freddy bully is named Caleb Peterson but that's subject to change bc I don't really like it...

Spotify Spotlights LGBTQIA+ Podcasts During Pride Month
Tumblr media
During Pride Month, Spotify is highlighting its LGBTQIA+ creators and podcasts, covering a wide range of topics from pop culture and queer news, to relationships and politics, and everything in between. Kudos to the company for its support of LGBTQIA+ issues, but it still should be doing a better job moderating homophobic content on its other podcasts.
The Read - Join bloggers Kid Fury and Crissle for their weekly podcast covering hip-hop and pop culture's most trying stars. Throwing shade and spilling tea with a flippant and humorous attitude, no star is safe from Fury and Crissle unless their name is Beyoncé. (Or Blue Ivy.)
As transplants to New York City (Kid Fury from Miami and Crissle from Oklahoma City), The Read also serves as an on-air therapy session for two friends trying to adjust to life (and rats) in the big city. The Read is part of the LoudSpeakers Network and is published every week on iTunes, iHeart Radio Talk, Soundcloud & Stitcher.
VERY DELTA with Delta Work - Legendary Emmy Award-winning drag queen Delta Work (RuPaul’s Drag Race) hosts this Luxury Public Access Podcast and YouTube Talk Show where she looks gorgeous, welcomes very special guests, and goes off on important issues that are Very Delta, from good fast-food drive-through manners to the perfect “sexretary” shoe. Do you want to hear her go off? I think you want to hear her go off. Produced by Moguls of Media and the Forever Dog Podcast Network.
So True with Caleb Heron - weekly podcast from beloved gay comedian Caleb Hearon. Basically just getting into it and sorting it all out and kind of identifying what’s really real.
Handsome - Handsome is a podcast from comedians Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster, and Mae Martin. Every week, the "Handsome" hosts field a question from a friend and attempt to answer it together, covering every subject you could think of. Along the way, Tig, Fortune and Mae tell plenty of stories and just generally have a ridiculous time.
Las Culturistas - Ding dong! Join your culture consultants, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, on an unforgettable journey into the beating heart of CULTURE. Alongside sizzling special guests, they GET INTO the hottest pop-culture moments of the day and the formative cultural experiences that turned them into Culturistas. Produced by the Big Money Players Network and iHeartRadio.
Two Dykes and A Mic - “Two Dykes and a Mic” is a weekly queer podcast dedicated to sex positivity, lgbtq dating and building a community filled with laughter and gayness. Hosts Rachel Scanlon and McKenzie Goodwin, two lesbian best friends, keep listeners up to date with “Gay News”, relationship advice with “Ask A Dyke”, dating horror stories with weekly “Bumble Fumbles” and so much more! Gay & Afraid with Eric Sedeño - Sedeño is an art director, iIllustrator, and TikTok sensation @ricotaquito. He’s known for his ability to make audiences feel like friends, for his contagious laugh, and being himself — the internet just happens to be watching, too. On the podcast Gay & Afraid Sedeño uses these elements to dive into mental health, dating, and everything in between. He’s joined by a colorful cast of rotating guests, some are also internet personalities, and all are friends like Brittany Broski, Matt Peterson, and Emily Gracin. “It’s the most fun when we get into the rhythm and forget that there are cameras or that we are being recorded,” says Sedeño. Sedeño wants to inspire listeners to be open, authentic, and find joy in every situation. “My podcast is meant to celebrate myself now,” he says. “The moment that inspired the podcast [was when] I didn’t know who I was yet. I hope listeners can feel that.” Join Eric Sedeño and a colorful cast of rotating guests in "GAY AND AFRAID," a new weekly podcast that puts the CAMP back in camp... literally. Each week, Eric welcomes a new guest to sit by his campfire and open up about topics like mental health, coming out stories, dating and relationships, and everything in between. We’re Having Gay Sex - After 10 years of serial monogamy, comedian Ashley Gavin, trades in her u-haul for a life of sleeping around and documents every gritty detail of her queer experiments in this podcast. Always in fear of being canceled, Ashley is aided by her queerest friends, Kate Sisk, known as the "Cancel Coach", and the "Youth in the Soundbooth" Gara Lonning, equipped with a gen-z themed soundboard, to call Ashley out on her BS. Together, they interview people from all over the gender and sexuality spectrums (from straight to gay and cis to trans) about their sex lives. And yes, straight people, you will find out what lesbian sex is.
The Bald and The Beautiful with Trixie and Katya - The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie and Katya features a pair of grizzled gay ghouls sitting on chairs, holding microphones, and discussing their fabulous lives in Tinseltown. (featuring occasional forays into movies, television shows, and air-conditioning) The New York Times called them models, moguls, actors, influencers, drag queens, RuPaul's Drag Race contestants, and even humanoids. If one thing can be said about these two preternaturally gorgeous queens' podcast, it's that Trixie and Katya find the sheer, unadulterated beauty of pure insanity. Tune in every week to experience the auditory pleasure that is The Bald and the Beautiful with Trixie and Katya.
Keep It! - Wherever pop culture and politics collide, Ira Madison III and Louis Virtel are on hand to examine the gorgeous wreckage from their uniquely queer perspective. Each week, our “Princes of Pop Culture” are joined by the likes of Michelle Yeoh, Hunter Doohan, John Boyega, Connie Britton, Gabrielle Union, and Sheryl Lee Ralph to unpack the latest controversies, laude character actress appreciation, and all the shade that’s fit to throw. New episodes drop every Wednesday.

Twins Double Up Mets 8-4!
Mets 4 Twins 8 W-Maeda (4-7) L-Peterson (3-8)
The Minnesota Twins have taken a stranglehold on the American League Central Division race. They have been reeling off wins and reeling down the Magic Number. They looked to beat up on the Mets again today. The Mets were ready early as Brandon Nimmo led-off the first and smacked a Kenta Maeda splitter out to left for a solo homer. Jeff McNeil followed with a single and stole second base. Later in the inning, Dan Vogelbach lined a run-scoring single to center and the Mets had a two-run lead before the Twins grabbed a bat. The Twins would answer in the second as Ryan Jeffers reached on an infield single and Willi Castro doubled. Donovan Solano knocked in a pair with a single to left and the game was tied at two apiece. The Twins got back to work in the third as Jordan Luplow lined a two-out double to right. Kyle Farmer singled him home and the Twins led 3-2 after three frames. Kenta Maeda finished off 5 1/3 solid innings and the bullpen held up. The Twins would rally in the seventh as Alex Kirilloff drew a walk and Royce Lewis single. Carlos Correa walked and Max Kepler delivered a pinch-hit bases clearing triple to right-center. Kyle Farmer singled home another run and the Twins led 7-2. The Mets weren't done as Pete Alonso knocked a Louie Varland change-up out to left for a solo homer. DJ Stewart then drilled a Varland fastball out to right. New York was within three and the Twins would get a run back in the eighth. Willi Castro smoked a Jeff Brigham cutter out to right-center for a solo homer. Dylan Floro had a 1-2-3 ninth and the Twins picked up the win today at home.
-Final Thoughts- Kenta Maeda struggled early before finding a groove. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Kody Funderburk got out of the sixth, Caleb Thielbar struck out two in the seventh, and Louie Varland gave up two in the eighth. Dylan Floro had a 1-2-3 ninth. Kyle Farmer and Willi Castro had three hits each. Jordan Luplow had two hits on the day. The Twins hit 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left six men on base. The Willi Castro homer in the eighth helped the Twins save Jhoan Duran from entering the game. The Twins will go for the sweep tomorrow as Tylor Megill faces Pablo Lopez in the series finale.
