@multianime inquired - “   please ,   just  hold  me .   ” (Haruka to Rin)
Tumblr media
"Oi, oi Haru..."
The tone in his friends' voice seemed so somber. Haruka is not normally one for showing much emotions but when he does they hit Rin hard. A tentative gulp, swallowing down the lump in his throat urged Rin to step towards the older male and embrace him.
Tumblr media
He doesn't know how long Haru would let him hold him like this. It's not exactly the first time he's hugged Haru, but that was normally after the thrill of a race, or in general excitement, and whenever Rin had nothing else to do but to handle Haru between his arms. This was different... Haruka asked for this. It was putting him slightly on edge.
"Ehh, so...tell me... how long do ya wanna stay like this? Not complainin' or anythin' just.. You're not always someone who likes to be physical, y'know? What gives Haru?"

endless list of favorite characters: Matsuoka Rin ( Free! )
The four of us won this together, so it doesn't make sense for one person to take it home. So, let's put it in a time capsule and dig it up when we're grown up. Romantic, right?

Rinharu
Okay so this has been stuck in my ask box for YEARS (i'm so sorry) and I cannot for the life of me remember what ask game it was for but: yes, agreed. I think it might be this one, but correct me if I'm wrong lol:
send me a ship and I’ll tell you… who is more likely to hurt the other? Okay so this is a bit complicated, considering they have a track record of miscommunications with each other that led to hurt for each of them. I personally think that Rin is more likely? Not on purpose, he just cares more about what other people think which might lead him to accidently do/say something that could hurt Haru, and he's had a tendency in the past to shut people out and believe the worst of himself. However, Haru has a tendency to put other's needs before himself and he too also shuts people out and damn. I guess they're both most likely, even more so in the sense that we've seen that when one is hurt, the other hurt for them too or hurt as a result - or gets empathetically hurt later on when finding out? They're far too linked at this point damn who is emotionally stronger? It's quite complicated. I think Rin is more in touch with his emotions, and while he has experience with loss and have been through a lot in his life, I can't quite tell if it's made him emotionally stronger or not. Haru's parents weren't really there for him through most of his life and he had to undergo quite some emotional turmoil himself, but idk if that all made him emotionally stronger either, or not. I see Rin as being the more emotionally sensitive of the two, but I wouldn't say that necessarily made him weaker? I think it depends on what, and also at what point they are in their lives. Right now, after the last season, I'd say Rin is likely the emotionally stronger of the two, since he seems much more prepared for their upcoming career than Haru (having been more used to having to fight extra hard and push himself beyond his limits from years of training abroad and all that), more at peace with himself and generally at a really good place. However, when it comes to things like loss, I think the trauma of losing his dad is still something he hasn't worked out, and if he were to face another death or sickness of someone close to him (or something similar - just look at his reaction when he thought Gou started dating, damn), I think it would be like a breaking point for him, and in that case I think Haru would be more emotionally stronger in case he was faced with it. who is physically stronger? Rin who is more likely to break a bone?  Haru, on his way into some body of water lol who knows best what to say to upset the other?  Haru. Rin is more expressive and gets embarrassed easily, so it's quite easy to get under his skin. We've all seen how easy it is for Haru, at least. who is most likely to apologise first after an argument?  Depends on what the argument it was about. But I do believe Rin would, since he's grown to the point of owning up to the things he's done. Or maybe Haru, since he usually takes the blame of things, even when he shouldn't? who treats who’s wounds more often?  Rin does more physical training, so he's probably more often sore than Haru? Haru might get more actual wounds than Rin, though (even though we haven't actually seen him get hurt/trip or anything, I believe his at-times-instinct and irrational behavior would land him in some unlucky situations). who is in constant need of comfort?  None of them really? Or both. Rin always has his arm around Haru's shoulder and that's quite a comfort to them both, one that I think both would crave at this point. The comfort of knowing the other is there. who gets more jealous?  Haru who’s most likely to walk out on the other?  o u ch (they would both walk out on the other if they believed it was in the best interest of the other) who will propose?  I think Rin wants to propose the most, have extremely romantic ideas about it and all that. But Haru might wind up beating him to it, because he knows getting married is something that Rin really wants? who has the most difficult parents? Haru who initiates hand-holding when they’re out in public?  Rin who comes up for the other all the time?  Like who shows up the most or who just approaches the other the most?? If it's the
latter I think Rin used to be constantly on Haru's heels, but after a while I think Haru might always be there behind Rin. lurking, observing, appreciating who hogs the blankets?  Haru who gets more sad?  Rin who is better at cheering the other up?  Rin, all it takes is allowing mackerel on the menu who’s the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes? I can't really imagine either one of them doing that lol, especially not as a regular thing, but I guess Rin is most likely to? who is more streetwise? Rin is probably more STREET SMARTs than Haru who is more wise? Depends. Rin is more experienced in life, but Haru has shown that he has an ability to focus on the important things in life: what makes you happy. who’s the shyest?  Haru who boasts about the other more?  Rin (or should i say mr. "DO YOU KNOW HARU- I MEAN HARUKA NANASE"/"boy with eyes as clear as water, my rival, my shining" matsuoka) who sits on who’s lap? Haru (*looks directly at the carrying-bridal-style scene*)

My Notes on “It’s Meaningless Without You”
3RD GRADE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Makoto invited Haru to join Iwatobi SC because he knew Haru liked  water and swimming and he wanted to be with Haru in the thing that Haru liked. Seeing Haruka happy made Makoto happy.
6TH GRADE
High Speed Ch. 3.2 (Makoto POV)
“It’s not because Matsuoka-kun asked, but I’m thinking that I’ll try swimming the medley relay. So…… Haru, let’s swim together. It’s no good if Haru’s not there, if it isn’t Haru. I want to swim with Haru!”
Without stirring, without even changing his expression, Haruka accepted them up front, Makoto’s words that seemed to strike hard. To the point that it’d make you think as if he could even be able to count Makoto’s breathing and pulse, with a cool gaze. That gaze of Haruka’s cools down Makoto’s burning heart and body. Makoto felt the ripples in his chest rapidly calming down. ”
Tumblr media
Novelization Ch. 6 (Haruka POV)
“That’s why the first time I heard “it’s pointless without you, Haru” I was a bit confused. How should I take those words of Makoto’s? Should I accept them? For a moment, I didn’t know what to do.
The elementary school me didn’t say anything and just stared at Makoto’s face. I’m sure it was only a short amount of time in reality. But to Makoto that short moment probably felt like forever. He quickly said, “sorry for saying something weird” and smiled at me. I probably should have said something back to him at that time. I took advantage of the fact that Makoto understood me without me having to say anything.”
Makoto took Haru’s silence as acceptance. Haru saID he was just confused during that situation.
Makoto is quite optimistic in his own way. He thinks what he likes and Haru lets him.
I don’t think they ever talked about this. Ignorance is bliss.
Haru will undestand.. slowly but later.
FIRST YEAR, MIDDLE SCHOOL
High Speed 2  Ch. 2 (Haruka POV)
Nagisa clung onto Haruka’s chest. Clinging onto him, he silently cried.
Haruka acknowledged what he was feeling for the first time.
––Loneliness.
In the water where neither Rin nor Makoto are, he felt loneliness.
High Speed 2 Ch. 3  (Haruka POV)
It’s not that he’s discovered a special meaning in basketball. However, there’s no meaning in swimming now, either. If he’s swimming meaninglessly, then it’s the same as playing basketball meaninglessly. It may still be better, if at least Makoto is there.
At least Haru knew that he felt lonely without his best friends.
Haru is getting there with his feelings slowly but surely.
High Speed 2 Ch 10  (Haruka POV)
“Haahaa, what were you doing. With something like this.”
“……I thought of going to a place where Haru isn’t.”
Haruka’s heart leapt. Where was he trying to go. What was he trying to do. What would’ve happened if he were a little slower.
“……Why?”
Asking that was the most he could do.
“Will I be alright even if Haru isn’t here? …..I wanted to make sure of that.”
Raising his eyebrows, he shows a lonely smile. Makoto was fighting all along. He was suffering, all along. In a place where Haruka’s thoughts couldn’t possibly reach……
“Would Haru be alright even if I weren’t here?”
He can’t lie to him anymore. He can’t deceive him. He can’t trick him. Neither Makoto, nor Haruka himself.
“–– I wouldn’t have looked for you if I were.”
“Right.”
Makoto’s unexpected behavior worried his mother and also Haru.
Haru admitted that he could read Makoto well but it was not yet enough to see his inner turmoil. He now understood Makoto more.
Haru admitted to himself and Makoto the truth.
This brings me back to:
High Speed Ch. 3.2 (Makoto POV, 6th Grade)
“He gazes at Haruka’s eyes. He realized that he was the one whose heart could be seen through. It was like that since he was young. Even though he never said anything about himself, he knew everything about Makoto. He understood him. And then, he pretended not to understand. His heart opens up. There was no longer a meaning in locking things away.
This was about Makoto’s fear of water and Haru recognizing it. Makoto was not wrong about this. At 12 years old he tried to guess Haru’s mind.
Makoto was right when he says Haru pretends not to understand.
Liking to swim even though he’s afraid of the water, but wanting to escape when he enters the pool, and that’s why he wants Haruka to be there, but Haruka is blunt as usual……. Even so, he didn’t care about that right now. Just having Haruka understand that that’s what he’s like was enough for now.
In elementary up to middle school Makoto relied on Haru being by side to help enjoy swimming (at first) and to help him face his fear of water and the ocean. Everything is better when Haru is with him.
Haru relied (unknowingly) on Makoto as well to push him to do many things which he won’t care to do if left alone, such as attending Iwatobi SC, joining tournaments and choosing school clubs. As long as Makoto is there Haru has an excuse to do these things.
Of course the above makes it seem that their friendship is superficial but the underlying truth is that they really like spending time with each other and would be happiest when they are both experiencing the same things side by side.
Novelization 0 (Makoto POV, First Year Middle School Flashbacks)
Haru doesn’t talk much. He’s always been like that, but after he quit the swim club at the end of our first year of middle school, he’d become that way even more. I know about what Haru is thinking without him saying anything, but when he suddenly said he was quitting the swim club at that time, I didn’t know why. I just knew something had happened, and I kinda figured out that he didn’t want to talk about that with anyone. That’s why I didn’t dig into it any deeper and just smiled and said, “Then I’ll quit too.”
Haru quitting swimming club during their First Year in Middle School plunged Haru to darkness even Makoto couldn’t follow. So Makoto quit the swimming club too. Makoto understood that Haru is getting hurt by swimming, even when Haru loved it so much. And at that time Makoto was still very much afraid of water. Without Haru in the water with him, swimming would just be meaningless.
The unknown three years in between unmistakenly healed them both. Makoto, found strength in Haru as a person, continued being by his side. In time Makoto’s fear of the water subsided.
Haru, while slowly healing, probably pretty much relied on Makoto’s support and cajoling to do the things he likes.
They found meaning and happiness in each other in those three years before Nagisa returned to their life and kickstarted the events of S1.

Novelization Ch.6 (Haruka POV)
Then I thought about the question Makoto asked before. Something that’s scary to me? What is the thing that I’m most afraid of?
The thing that I’m most afraid of. That’s a presence that’s always been with me suddenly disappearing. I thought that that might become a suitable answer to “It’s pointless without you, Haru” The feeling that I hadn’t been able to put a name to until now.
But I thought I could put it into words now. Makoto. I… “What is it Haru?” “I….” I tried to get it out of my mouth, but, I really couldn’t put it into words. I felt embarrassed about saying it out loud. “Nothing…” Makoto smiled at my hesitation. Seeing that I thought, oh, right, Makoto can read my mind. Seeing Makoto’s smile, it made me feel relieved. “Nothing. Thank you, Makoto….” Since it’s Makoto, he can understand without me saying anything. I once again took advantage of Makoto’s feelings.
Notes:
Haru’s full understanding of what Makoto really means to him only really came after that near-death experience in the training camp.

Everything above ^^^ explains why Haru thanking Makoto in Ep 11 was a Major confession.
I think we know now what Haru meant to tell Makoto the morning after Makoto’s almost drowning experience.

Chapter 2:  Back In The City Where It All Began, Pt. 1
Despite his best efforts to keep his plans a complete surprise, it hadn’t taken long for Haruka to become suspicious.  He had gone along with Rin’s announcement earlier that morning that Iwatobi and their long-awaited reunion with their friends was going to be pushed back a day or two with very little comment other than a curious rise of an eyebrow, but when they arrived at their departure gate at the airport and Haruka’s gaze landed on the city of their destination, Rin watched as his eyes widened.  Something - a spark of recognition - flickered behind those azure pools, as what had merely been vague curiosity up until that point morphed slowly into something unreadable.
“Rin, where are we-?” Haruka began, turning to glance at him.  His brow furrowed, as he silently studied the gleeful expression that Rin was having difficulty holding back.  “...Sydney? What are we-?”
“You ask too many questions,” Rin interrupted, with a low murmured chuckle.  “C’mon-” his arms slipped around Haruka’s waist, and he rested his chin on his shoulder.  “Didn’t I tell you it was gonna be a surprise?” He took in Haruka’s still-dubious gaze, and breathed out a dramatic sigh.  “You don’t have to look that suspicious, y’know…  You’ll see soon enough - you’ll love it!”
The look on Rin’s face clearly said Trust me…   The silent questions died on Haruka’s lips, his features relaxing into a faint smile.  Of course he did…
“...Lead the way.”
The plane ride lasted all of exactly an hour and twenty three minutes.  After that, it was a fifteen minute cab ride to the nearest bus terminal, and then from there, the two boarded a bus that was bound for the heart of the city.  When the bus finally rumbled to their destination stop twenty minutes later, it suddenly became glaringly-obvious where they were, and what Rin’s “plan” was.
“...You’re recreating our original trip to Australia?”
There was an odd catch to Haruka’s voice, as he stared up at the familiar stone fountain in the middle of Hyde Park.  The sunlight caught the water droplets as it rained down into the pool of water below, and it was still every bit as enchanting as the very first time Haruka had laid eyes on it a decade prior.
“There’s really no keeping surprises a secret from you, is there?” Rin chuckled.  “I just… I just thought that it’d be a nice tribute, you know? Kinda the whole full-circle thing - back in the city that meant so much to me and my dream when I was a kid.  The city where I lost sight of that dream, and thought it was gone forever… until you saved me, and gave that dream back to me…” Turning to face Haru, Rin’s eyes softened affectionately.  “And that’s something that I’m forever going to be indebted to you for. But no matter how many disappointments and regrets I faced here, it shaped me to be who I am today - helped me become stronger because of those experiences.  Haru…” Rin paused, his words trailing off as he stared into the spouting fountain. “This city… it- it’s special to me, not only because of my history with it, but because of you.  This was where I was able to show you that sight that I’d once promised you when we were kids, and where I was able to share some of my favorite places and memories with you.  This was also where I was able to help you decide of your own future, and where our dreams officially became one… Now, it’s ten years later, and-”
Rin cut off abruptly, when he felt the tips of Haruka’s fingers brush lightly against his arm.
“A-And…”
“I know…” Haruka whispered, a gentle smile in his quiet voice.  His fingers sought out Rin’s, and interlacing them together, he gave Rin’s hand a squeeze.  They were warm, and held a comforting familiarity, and were so, so… Rin.
“Rin.  Thank you for bringing us back here to Sydney one more time.  It’s perfect.”
“It’s just that…” Rin’s cheeks were flushed, but he nevertheless returned the hand squeeze.  “Tomorrow, we’ll be going home for good, Haru…  The last decade… everything- I wouldn’t trade my memories of you being there by my side for anything.”  One hand reached out to gently cup Haruka’s cheek, thumb tenderly caressing the porcelain skin.  Closing his eyes, Haruka leaned into the touch.
“I know…”  Once again, he breathed out those same two words, the whisper this time half-muffled by the fabric of Rin’s shirt.  The world around them vanished, and in that instant, it was just the two of them: two young men whose souls were bound to each other’s from the moment they first laid eyes on the other as children all those years ago.  Rin’s arm was tight and firm around Haruka’s slighter, more slender frame - strong, and warm, and safe.
Home.  Home meant Iwatobi, and all the familiarity of that tiny portside town.  Home meant seeing Makoto, Gou, Nagisa, and Rei again, after all this time…
Home meant Rin - Rin, and the promise of a future together with a man whom he loved beyond words…
“E-Excuse me…”
Opening his eyes at the sudden voice that seemed to be addressing them, Haruka blinked down at a teenage girl and the young boy who was with her.  The pair were staring up at himself and Rin in awe. Upon realizing that Haruka’s cerulean eyes were now focused upon her, the girl’s face immediately flushed crimson, and she took a half step back, averting her eyes in embarrassment at having been caught shamelessly staring.
“Are…  Are you Haruka Nanase and Rin Matsuoka?” She asked breathlessly, the question coming out sounding flustered and slightly high-pitched.  One hand held onto the young boy’s, the other clutched tightly at a cellphone with trembling fingers.
“Y-Yes…” Rin seemed equally surprised as how Haruka himself felt, as he answered the question in English.  “How can we help you?” The words rolled smoothly - comfortably - from Rin’s tongue, and Haruka once again couldn’t help but admire Rin’s complete mastery of the foreign language.  During their travels in the last ten years, and their constant exposure in English-speaking countries, Haruka had picked up phrases here and there. It had been enough to get by those occasionally-mandatory interviews and press conferences, but Rin’s level of proficiency was still far beyond his reach.
“I’m sorry to disturb you, but… well… c-could we get an autograph and a picture with you guys…?”  Reaching up with a hand, the girl fretted with a strand of hair as she shyly tucked it behind her flaming red ear.  “M-My brother is an avid swimmer, and we try to keep up with as many meets as possible, and ever since we first saw you make your debut, and the way that you tied… you guys have been our idols…!  Ever since then, we’ve followed all of your races, and cheered you on in both Beijing and London. We’re huge fans - you guys are amazing!  Oh my gosh-” she gushed excitedly.  “To think that we’d actually run into you guys here, of all places-!!”
“I-”  Haruka blinked, ever-growing confusion slipping into his expression the faster the girl rambled on.  The rapid flow of unfamiliar English words proved too much of a struggle for him to try and keep up, so he merely settled for silently withdrawing - just like he always did - and letting Rin take care of this one.  He stole a sidelong glance at Rin, and in those suddenly suspiciously-gleaming eyes, he saw a myriad of emotions flood into those red orbs. A deeply-stunned surprise at her words. Pride. But above all, as those eyes sought out and held his gaze, Haruka saw unadulterated and unmistakable love and affection radiating from them.
“Yeah- Of course!” Rin grinned, enthusiastically pulling Haruka closer to him.  One arm slung over Haruka’s shoulder, the other extending out to flash a peace sign at the camera.  They were starting to draw quite a crowd, as curious onlookers strolled over for a closer look, and people whispered excitedly behind their hands amongst themselves about whether or not it was the Matsuoka Rin and Nanase Haruka.  Almost as if sensing Haruka’s growing discomfort with the crowd, Rin gave an easy smile.
“Almost done, babe - I promise.”
The whisper came as a low murmur at Haruka’s ear, so quiet that the words were meant for him and him alone.  Rin flashed him a quick wink, before kneeling down to the child’s level.
“What is your name?”
“Brandon…” The young boy fidgeted shyly.  Holding the piece of paper and pen out to Rin, he watched wide-eyed as Rin signed it, and added an extra message underneath:
~To Brandon:  Dare to dream big, and reach for the stars!~
“Never let anyone tell you any different.”  Rin’s tone was gentle, as he ruffled Brandon’s hair.  “You can reach every single dream you put your mind to.  Work hard, and never give up.” Handing the autograph back to the excited and awestruck child, he wished both siblings well as they thanked them and went on their way.
“Cute kid,” Rin chuckled, the comment accompanied by a fond smile as he gazed after the two.  Turning to Haruka, he slung an affectionate arm around his shoulders. “Ready? I figured we could hit the beach, and then make it to Russell’s and Lori’s by about 4:30 or 5:00.  That’ll give us about an hour before dinner, and then, well…”
Rin waggled an eyebrow, a grin teasing the corner of his lips.  Haruka smiled back, knowing full well what Rin didn’t need to say aloud.  Fragmented memories of a time from long ago, when the two of them had spent a night together in an old historic Sydney hotel, came unbidden to them both.  Back then, the night had passed them by with the both of them being overly conscious of the space (or lack, thereof) between them in the single double bed that they shared, and nothing beyond a simple chat had occurred.  However, tonight…
Rin’s grin widened, as he stole a clandestine sidelong glance toward the small duffel bag that lay at their feet.  Tucked away safely inside was a very special item that, should everything go according to plan tonight, would elevate their relationship to the next level.  His fingers curled and tightened around Haruka’s hand, as he pulled the other man closer into his arms. Under the gentle rain of falling water from the fountain, he reached up with his free hand to gently cup Haruka’s cheek, their lips meeting in a searing kiss.  In that moment, it didn’t matter that they were standing in the middle of a very public park, with the gazes of onlookers and passersby that ranged from a whole spectrum of emotions and judgements trained upon them. It didn’t matter that the whisperings from the ever-growing crowd gathered around them buzzed at the back of his mind.  What mattered, more than anything in the world, was the man encircled in his arms -- the man with raven black hair and deep azure eyes, who had stayed firmly at his side through everything for the last ten years. The man who he’d loved his entire life…
When they pulled slowly apart at last - the kiss still lingering on both their lips - Rin’s hand reached out of its own accord, fingertips skimming over the surface of Haruka’s cheekbones, the touch warm and familiar and practiced.
“Mmm…” Haruka murmured softly.  His eyes slowly opened to focus in on Rin’s face, and a faint smile caused the corners of his eyes to crinkle slightly.  He sighed, gaze flickering upward to regard their surroundings with a warm, genuinely affectionate look, his smile taking on a melancholic note.
“Being here with you again like this in Sydney after all this time…  I-” Haruka took in a deep breath, glancing away for a moment before returning to steadily meet Rin’s gaze once more.  He leaned into the hand that still lingered at his cheek, even as his own rose up to rest over Rin’s, fingers curling into the comforting warmth.
“...I’ll miss it.”
The quiet words of his simple confession echoed in the air around them, leaving them both to reflect silently for a moment on each’s own memories associated with this place, this city, and the vast depth of just how deeply the roots of influence of this country ran for the two of them.  Rin smiled, the arm that was over Haruka’s shoulder tightening slightly as he leaned to press a kiss to his temple.
We’ll definitely come back someday…  The kiss seemed to promise.  We can come back as many times as you’d like…
“...C’mon, Haru.  Let’s make this last day in Sydney count.”
A/N: Please like and ESPECIALLY reblog if you liked it, I’d love to know your thoughts on it!  (Do keep in mind, though, that this is my first fic that I’ve done for Free!/RinHaru, so please be gentle in your critiquing of it). The next chapter is already halfway done, so hopefully the next update won't take 3.5 years... lol. Thank ya'll so much for your patience and support!
Sneak Peek at Chapter 3: Special memories resurface as Rin and Haru continue their day in Sydney, leading up to an unforgettable night back in Room 25 ;-)

@multianime asked: ❛ are you asking me out on a date? ❜ Haruka to Rin
Tumblr media
"Took you long 'nough to catch on,"
Rin hisses in embarrassment and bites his lip. Sometimes he swears Haruka is more dense than he let's on, not that Rin was being very expressive himself. He sighs to hopefully keep the heat from engulfing his face, but he's still blushing madly.
